Lucas Slagel saw a family in need, and he wanted to help. Slagel, a senior at Peru High School, heard about a little girl, Riley Pitner, who was diagnosed with Batten Disease. This dis ease has no cure and over time children affected lose their sight, motor skills, and suffer from worsening seizures. The life expectancy of those diagnosed with Batten Disease is late teens or twenties. Riley’s father, Colten Pitner, a Peru Police Department Sgt. Detective, made the announcement of his daughter’s condition via Facebook June 12. Slagel, although he didn’t know the Pitner family, felt compelled to help any way he could and what better way to do so than through an activity Slagel knows and loves: car meets. “Everyone involved was our car group in Peru, but some key people that made the car meet happen were Austin Pope, Brayden Pope, Tom Pope, Tiffany Pope, Brady Hines, Kyle Hoover, Tara and Sean Slagel, Matt Banks, Sam Adejokun, Brady Hahn, Robert Maldanado, Emmanuel Arnett, and Emanual Maldonado,” Slagel said. Slagel, son of Sean and Tara Slagel, and brother to Addysen Slagel, organized a car meet and a 50/50 raffle with a donation table with free entry for the event. It was held July 31 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Why would a busy young man decide to put together a fundrais er for someone he didn’t know? Slagel said, “I decided to raise money because I wanted to help someone in need. I also wanted to bring the car community together and have an enjoyable

When asked where he thought he might have in herited a giving heart, Slagel said, “I think I inherited a giving heart from my whole family. Everyone in my family is very self less and would rather see others happy and comfort able before they are.”

Slagel, has just begun his senior year at PHS and is playing his favorite sport: tennis. Being a teenager going to school and playing a sport can make for a tight sched ule, but Slagel was happy to make this happen for the Pit ner family. “I really just hope everyone had a good evening.
