By Michelle mboswell@thepaperofmiami.comBoswell Peru Elks Lodge #365 will be celebrat ing their 125th Anniversary Sept. 9-10 at their downtown location, 122 North Broadway, Peru. The organization was granted its charter in 1897 and was incorporated as a non-profit social and Fraternal organ ization. From February to September of 1900, the Peru Elks Lodge purchased the Hershel and Cora Frick home for $3,000 and located at the corner of Seventh and Broadway Streets. After nearly $10,000 of remodeling, the Lodge was dedicated.From1912-13, the lodge had more extensive renovations and the member ship was at 300. Many of the members represented businesses and profession al leaders of Peru. The organization was very active during the 1913 flood. One of the many contributions to the community made by the Lodge was win dow shades for Dukes Memorial Hospital.From1920-30, more renovations were made and included the enclosure of the front porch and an awning-covered side entrance.In1949, a dedication ceremony was held after a major renovation resulting in the current structure, featuring lime stone, siding, updated dining room, women’s lounge, and a large basement Fromlounge.1940-60, the Elks enjoyed close ties to Peru Circus roots including Emmett Kelly, Jr., who portrayed the infamous clown, “Weary Willie,” and Clyde Beatty, the infamous circus wild animal trainer. The Elk statue displayed on the roof was donated by Ben Wallace, founder of the Hagenback-Wallace Circus and who resided next door to the Elks Lodge. In 2022, The Elks Lodge has embarked on a “2022 Building Renovation Project” for major upgrades to the lounges, bath rooms, dance floor/stage, exterior and windows. So far, $9,000 has been raised. The organization is happy and grateful to receive donations to this project. The Lodge contributes to many good causes in the community and outside of Miami County. Since the 1960’s, the Indiana Elks’ designated State project has been cancer research. The Peru Elks Lodge hosts an annual auction to support this project. Since 1981, the Peru Lodge has raised $180,448 of which $70,249 has gone to Purdue and Indiana Universities Cancer Research pro grams. In 1943, scholarships have been awarded to a student at Peru, North Miami, and Maconaquah High Schools. Currently, the Peru Elks awards three $500 scholarships, totaling $1,500 annu ally. Since 2002, $30,000 has been award ed.The Peru Elks also supports needy families at Christmastime with funds raised at the annual Prime Rib Dinner and Breakfast with Santa. To celebrate their anniversary, Sept. 9, there will be a dinner made by Ron Short from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The dinner will cost $12 and will include broasted chicken, salad, and dessert. Fast approaching the end of summer, and grilling season, there’s one steak that enables us to enjoy its great grilledmeaty flavor and feed the whole gang without going brokethe flat iron! A lean beef cut that offers a lot of bang for your buck, the flat iron is considered to be the third most tender of steaks there is. However, being lean means it can be a little tougher, but if you know the secret to cooking it, you can make this steak a ten der one, Pickingtoo!up some expert cooking tips from the pros I have a secret they shared: Oil!That’s right, to make the most of a flat iron, simply place a whole, un-cut flat iron into a gallon plastic bag then add 1/4 to1/2 cup of avo cadoWhyoil.avocado oil? Because it’s a fat with a high smoke point (500 degrees), which is the point when a good fat con verts into an evil, transClosefat!the bag, re moving all air, then seal. Massage the meat with the oil to evenly coat, then place it in the coldest part of the freezer. Let rest until oil so lidifies, about 20 minutes.Meanwhile, heat the grill or broiler to 400 degrees. Remove flat iron from the freezer then remove it from its bag and place it directly onto the preheated grill or broiler.Carefully squeeze remaining oil from the bag into a shal low cup then, using a basting brush, cover the top of the steak with half of the cup’s oil.Cook for 3 minutes on a grill/broilerclosed then, using the basting brush, spread remain ing oil carefully over the top of the steak then flip the steak over, and cook on its second side as be fore, for 3 minutes.
