Ask any dog owner and they will more than likely tell you their “fur baby” is not just a pet but a part of the family. They will probably talk about how they love to spoil their special family member, and now they can do just that, locally. Aaron and Hannah Barrick own Wesson’s Canine Bakery and they offer all kinds of goodies to spoil your pooch. Although they aren’t originally from Miami County, the county is benefitting from their decision to locate here. “Neither one of us are originally from here but grew up in Florida and North Carolina and met during our days at college. Aaron is finishing up a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Liberty University and is also employed with the United States Air Force. I have a bachelor’s degree in Canine Nutrition from NC State University and am seeking furthering certifications regarding canine well-being,” Hannah said. The pair obviously have a love for canines but their idea for the business came from a loss in their family. “The business idea came about as in 2015 my childhood Yorkshire Terrier named Sweetie died of sudden pancreatitis due to a very popular dog treat that has many hidden chemicals within,” Hannah said. She continued with, “My family had contacted the company and they paid to keep us silent, however that was not justice enough as there are still many harmful chemicals. A year

later we were looking into adding our first dog (Wesson) to our family and began to use what I had learned in the classroom to formulate healthy treats for him. Then, friends and family members began wanting and buying treats for their fur babies too, so we sought proper licensing to begin legally selling dog treats. We haven’t stopped growing since! Our treats, except Breath Treats and Copaiba Cookies, are safe for cats, too. All our wellness products are cat safe as well,” she said. Hannah feels they have advantages over other dog treat makers. “I have a degree that helps me to formulate these ingredients into a healthy option, as well as being fully licensed which gives us an advantage over other dog treat makers. We also try to use locally grown ingredients as much as possible and get them fresh to lock in those nutrients. We are committed to never using any harmful preservative agents, chemicals, dyes, or sugar. You can pronounce and know what every ingredient in all our products are,” Hannah explained. They want their customers and potential customers to know they are licensed through the FDA which holds them to strict guidelines concerning their products. The Barricks like to use locally grown ingredients and although they have signed non-disclosure documents with some, they did say they get their blueberries from Siders in Rochester. They said they

The couple own their own business that caters to canines. They also have products that felines can consume, too. enjoy going several times each year to pick the berries. They also hand pick our apples from a local orchard in Peru. “When we do our yearly fruit picking, we freeze them in small amounts to seal in those nutrients for year-round goodness,” Hannah said. What kind of products can you expect to find through Wesson’s Canine Bakery? Hannah said, “We cur-
rently offer 6 different types of dog treats— Peanut Butter and Berry Flavored Cookie, Dog Breath Treat, Canine Copaiba Cookie, Apple Biscuit and Cheddar Cheese Puff Dog Treat. We also offer wellness products to help the outer part of the dog’s body—Paw Balm, Wrinkle Rub, Hot Spot Spray, Doggie Toothpaste, and a Holistic Flea and Tick Spray. We lastly enjoy coming up

with corny little sayings to put on bandanas, because who doesn’t want their dog to look cute?” While Aaron and Hannah have put their heart and soul into their business, they are also busy with other careers. “Aaron is a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force as well as an AKC handler. Hannah is also a dog groomer and AKC handler. They have Bernese Mountain Dogs
they show and do other sports with also,” Hannah explained. The couple attends events geared toward pets. They enjoy meeting pet parents as well as each and every fur baby. They said they also love meeting specific pet needs or addressing pet issues. People seem to be more in tune with their pooches and the relationship they have with them these days.

Canine The Barricks could not agree more. “Absolutely! With most of my generation getting married and having babies later, many are treating their pets like their children and have
continued from Page 1 awoken to the idea that if you pay a little more to feed your pets healthier not only will they live longer, but your veterinary expenses will lessen as well,” Hannah said. The Barricks have in-
house taste testers and that is a beautiful thing for their fur babies. “Oh goodness, they seriously crowd the kitchen and beg. There was actually a time that I didn’t grab a tray
of cookies when they came out of the oven and the tray and cookies spilled all over our kitchen—best day of work ever for our pooches. Since then, we have learned on some busy days to baby gate them out, so they aren’t tripping hazards,” Hannah said. How long does it take to actually produce a new product for the Barricks? “To bring out a brand-new treat, it takes about a year. First, we see the need and demand of it from our customers. We then take those and formulate what ingredients would be the
best to accomplish that goal. After that we test those ingredients together formulating a recipe—and trust us many end up as flops in this stage. We then test out with our own dogs and see what their opinion is. Then we take this new treat with us to an event and sample it with customers and by taste test have their dog vote whether or not they like the taste of it. From there we send a bag of the treats to a laboratory facility in which they crush the treats down and test the nutrients and formulate the calories per treat and such. While this is happening, at

home we formulate what the label may look like and get a go ahead from the state chemist on that. Once all the info comes back, we send it in a packet to the FDA for final approval so it can be officially licensed for sale. Finally, it comes out on the market for you to be able to buy and your dog to enjoy,” Hannah explained. Some of the ingredients that can be found in the treats offered by Wesson’s Canine Bakery are blueberries, apples, coconut flour, peanut butter, turmeric, fresh parsley, fresh peppermint, and cheese. These are just a few of the ingredients used in their products but, of course, are not in each and every treat. Each treat has a label listing all the ingredients. Do the Barricks have any new products coming on the market soon? “We are launching 2 new products in 2021 a new special treat and a wellness product but we cannot disclose more as we’re waiting for the license renewal to process. But stay tuned to our website and Facebook Page,”
she said. If you are interested in purchasing products from the Barricks, their website is WessonsCanineBakery.com . Not only can you view all their products and information concerning the products, but you can also place orders. Hannah said if you are local be sure to use the coupon code “DELIVERY” and you will not be charged any shipping fees. The Barricks said if anyone has any questions to email them at WessonsCanineBakery@g mail.com. If you are one of many fur baby parents who like to have a gift or two under the tree from Santa, the deadline to have treats from Wesson’s Canine Bakery are Dec.18 for shipping treats and local delivery orders can be taken up until Dec. 21. What do the Barricks hope others will say about their company and products? “We hope that they not only love them and recommend to their friends, but that they can see improvements in the lives of their dogs,” Hannah shared. And what better gift could there be, but more days spent with our furry friends?

Sports Peru Tigers take the win over Knox Redskins By Zak Boswell The Peru Tigers Varsity Basketball team took on the Knox Redskins Saturday, Dec. 5 at Tigarena. The Tigers won 48-41. In addition to there being a basketball game, it was also Senior night. Although COVID-19 restrictions determined who was allowed to attend the game, the Tigers still had an enthusiastic crowd to cheer them on to victory. Before the game began, the following senior cheerleaders and basketball players were introduced: Gabby Comer, Richelle Weller, Kash Bellar, Treyden Curtis, Pete Polk and Kade Townsend. Here are team results as well as individual players for Peru. Quarter 1: Peru 6, Knox 5; Quarter 2: Peru 19, Knox 19; Quarter 3: Peru 35, Knox 32 and Quarter 4: Peru 48, Knox 41. First half 3 pointers: 1 – Kash Bellar
First half fouls: Peru 9, Knox 6. Second half 3 pointers: None. Second half fouls: Peru 7, Knox 10. Peru Tiger Stats: Kade Townsend: 2 points, 2 fouls. Matt Ross: 14 points, 3 fouls. Treyden Curtis: 20 points, no fouls. Pete Polk: 5 points, 3 fouls. Kash Bellar: 6 points, 2 fouls. Parker Althouse: No points, no fouls. Braxten Robbins: No points, no fouls. Alex Ross: No points, 4 fouls. Matthew Roettger: 1 point, 2 fouls. Peru Tiger Head Coach Eric Thompson was happy with how the team played Saturday night. “I’m very proud of them. It was a tough game to play. They’re (Knox) a good team, a strong team. Our goal is to hold teams to 12 points or under a quarter and we did that at the outcome and at the half we held them at 19 points at the first half. It was
such a dog fight. It felt like we were struggling more than we actually were. It was more of a mental game,” Coach Thompson said. When asked what he thinks about the next two teams the Tigers will face, he had this to say: “Northfield and Tippecanoe have a history of playing a lot of zone which we haven’t seen yet this year so that will be different for us. Both of those coaches are seasoned and do a good job. Their teams play very well,” Coach Thompson said. The Tigers play again Saturday Dec. 12 at Northfield. The junior varsity game begins at 6:15 p.m., with varsity taking the court at 7:45 p.m. The next home game is Tuesday, Dec. 15, against Tippecanoe Valley. Lady Tigers fall to Kokomo Kats By Stephanie Bennett The Junior Varsity Lady Tigers basketball team played at Kokomo Saturday, Dec. 5. The Tigers started out slow in the first half. They were down 8 to 32, but the girls woke up in the second half. The Tigers won the second half 20 to 14 but the hole was too deep for the Tigers to get out of from the first half. The Tigers fell to the Lady Kats 28 to 46. The Lady Tigers are a young team and effort is always there. I love that the girls are fighting to the end. Once we learn to play for 4 quar-
