Even with our transport fee, it is less than the Neuter Scooter.” The need for adoptions from the rescue is dire but some people are hesitant because of the price. Day explained why this is a fair price for adoption. “$65 is the base price to have a cat spayed or neutered. If the cat is in heat or is pregnant, it’s more. The cat may need teeth removed (and they call ahead of time to make sure it’s okay to do that) and again, the price goes up. There is a $5 transport fee. We adopt our kittens for $75 and adults for $50. So that price doesn’t count the vaccinations, the flea meds and food. People don’t want to pay the price we ask but you can’t get all of these things taken care of for that price. You’re money ahead if you come here to get a cat” Day said. “We get zero help other than what this wonderful community gives. They have kept us going. Not one dime comes from the city or county,” said Day. Because the rescue is a 501-c3, a donation is tax deductible. The number the rescue likes to stay within concerning cats in the facility is 80, but recently the number has gone over that amount. “We won’t turn down an injured cat but if someone See Rescue, Page 2

A recent traffic stop by Indiana State Police Trooper Dakota Anderson led to the arrest of Nicholas Parks, 41, and Christopher Symons, 37, both from Bunker Hill, IN. Both were incarcerated in the Tipton County Jail. Parks faces criminal charges for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a legend drug, identity deception, possession of a narcotic drug, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Symons was incarcerated for resisting law enforcement, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of a narcotic. Tuesday, at approximately 4:24 p.m., Anderson initiated a traffic stop, on a 2007 Dodge Caliber, on State Road 28 near Tipton County Road 900 West. Anderson had received information that the vehicle’s occupants had outstanding arrest warrants.

During the traffic stop, Symons was identified as the driver. He had an outstanding arrest warrant for a parole violation. While speaking with officers, Symons ran from the scene. He was quickly captured by Trooper Dukengston Lavache. Parks, a passenger in the Dodge, repeatedly provided officers with false identifying information. He was eventually identified and found to have three active arrest warrants from Howard and Madison Counties for two counts for possession of methamphetamine, dealing methamphetamine, felon in possession of a handgun, intimidation, false informing, and resisting

law enforcement. During a subsequent search of the Dodge and the suspects, officers allegedly found marijuana, methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and $4,157.00 in United States currency. Further investigation led officers to obtain a search warrant for a travel trailer at 504 S. Main Street, Kempton. During a subsequent search of the trailer, officers allegedly found fentanyl, heroin, prescription medications, and methamphetamine. All criminal defendants are to be presumed innocent until, and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Miami County Moments

In the left photo, a family enjoys looking at train items that were available at the 2021 Miami County Model Train Show and Swap Meet. The event brought many out to the 4-H Fairgrounds on Satur-

Rescue calls to say they don’t want their cat anymore, we have to turn them down. We just don’t have room. The reality of that is the cat will probably be put out of the home and we’ll probably end up with it anyway,” said Day. Another issue the rescue runs into is people dropping off cats at the back door. The facility now has cameras set up to see who is leaving the animals. They hope this will stop this trend. Shircliff said the immediate needs of the facility are paper towels, Windex, laundry soap, dryer sheets, clumping litter (no light weight), Dawn dish soap, Friskies can food (pate), Fancy Feast

Donors can use the phone number 765-4754926 to donate through the account. If the donor gives as friends or family, the rescue gets the entire amount without a fee. Donations are an important part of the organization as well as volunteers. The list of volunteers they have now is short and they are struggling to keep their heads above water. Shircliff said she and Day are spending most of their days cleaning because they are short on volunteers. They added they do not

mind cleaning, but that takes time away from paperwork that needs to be done and the day to day needs of the cats concerning medical care. It gets done but the days are longer, and exhaustion is continuous. The volunteer list needs to grow to help get the rescue back on track as it was before COVID. If anyone wants to volunteer, contact the rescue at 76f5-475-4926 to make arrangements. If ever there was a time to make a difference in the community, the Scratching Post Cat Rescue is counting on Miami County to come through for them and their feline residents.
