editor’s note...

As a kid growing up, March always represented the end of winter and the hope for spring. It may come in like a lion, but you always hoped it would go out like a lamb.

These days, February and March mean Home Show season where neighbors can get ideas when it comes to renovating and remodeling their homes and yards. This month there are three shows. The Builders Association of North Central Indiana will host its annual shows in Warsaw and Plymouth and, back after a three year hiatus is, the Michiana Home Show.

All three shows are expected to have more vendors than

in years past, so if you’re thinking of doing some type of home remodeling project, be sure to take some time to go through at least one of these shows, see what’s available, chat with some vendors and maybe get some ideas of what you’d like to do.

Along with highlighting all three home shows, we’re thinking spring by discussing tree and shrub pruning as well as lawn mowing. Dani Messick did a neat article detailing the different types of mowers that are out there and what types of yard they are put to good use.

This year along with looking at the Pantone color of the year, we decided to see which colors the

their color of the year. This month, we highlighted Behr paint whose color of the year is Cracked Pepper. It’s been interesting to see how each paint brands’ color of the year complements Pantone’s color of the year.

As we celebrate our 20th anniversary we take a look back at what was popular back in 2004 for kitchens. It was the Tuscan kitchen look, which at the time, I thought was kind of cool, but then I love Italy. BethAnne BrinkCox spoke to some local experts who did say white kitchens were fading a bit from popularity.

Michiana Master Gardener Loanne Harms wrote about snowdrops which may be popping up soon if they hav-

And for the recipe this month I picked one from Chef Alex Guarnaschelli. I’ve never made one of her recipes before, but this one offered a great way to use up frozen veggies as well as pantry staples most of us already have. I also thought it was a great way to make a fast bowl of soup on a weeknight.

Until next month,

Lauren P.S. I hope all of you have a happy and joyful Easter.

What’s popular in

What do homeowners want today? Tammy Case, design and sales for Modern Kitchen in Elkhart, said “Actually I think we’re going back 20 years ago! We’re seeing more of the European cabinets with smaller profiles on the doors and drawers. Those have become more popular. And single color rather than two toned, with maybe a kitchen island being the stronger color. Mixing a lot of wood with paint, you know, painted cabinets with a wood island. Stainless steel is still staying pretty strong, with a veer toward a work sink–the sink has features like a cutting board, grates, different strainers–utilizing the sink as part of the countertop.” Well, that sounds like an efficient use of space!

Tim Mundinger of Warsaw Custom Cabinets said, “Dad bought it when I was in college, I came back to town eight years later and started working there.

“Customers are driven by the media! We have been building cabinetry that will endure for a lifetime. What customers are asking for now is what design-

Twenty years ago, the coveted kitchen style was the Tuscan look (often referred to as an “Olive Garden” kitchen). Remember those? Terra cotta tiles, deep reds, farmhouse tables and textured walls. Gone too was the industrial kitchen look; stainless steel appliances were the thing, but darker wood cabinets and high contrast kitchens were the thing many homeowners wanted and designers created. Another touch was the use of paint and other finishes to create faux rugs on the floors.

ers are telling them: a cleaner look. The white kitchen has faded again and we’re using stains that are hardly a stain, more like a wash, where you see the beauty and the grain that God put into the wood shining through.” He explained white cabinets first became a thing when Grandma wanted a clean look, and painted them every couple of years. “Sage green is a big color now. But there are some finishes we can use that will stay white.”

Mundinger said he likes walking in to see the style of a house, “and knowing what the

right look is for its age. We do that all the time. We take the time to go to someone’s home before we do a single quote. We look around and I see things people might not even know they need. In a small kitchen, there are better ways to utilize space, like a corner lazy Susan that is a non-standard size, built to fit. A custom cabinet shop can do that.” He said a common question is, “Can we get rid of the soffit?” to which he answers, “Of course. And depending on the depth of it, I can build a cabinet deeper and then the customer doesn’t have to restore

every inch of the ceiling. And in the bargain, you give the family lots more space.”

Lisa Turnpaugh, manager for 11 1⁄2 years of Copper River Cabinet Co. in Warsaw, said “We’re seeing white painted finishes and natural wood. We’re starting to see some color, but it’s been pretty neutral for a while.” When asked if there’s a good time to do such a remodel or construction, she said, “We definitely notice customers wanting things to be completed prior to Memorial Day, or after Labor Day.” They want to enjoy their summer! Turnpaugh said there was a downward slide during the pandemic and quarantine, but “for the most part, things have resumed as usual.”

Mundinger summed it up succinctly. “Put aside what you’re shown. What do YOU like? You’ll be the one living there. What are you comfortable with?” In other words, you can feel good about the quality of design and cabinetry businesses available to you. Have fun with it! n

DRAMA are having a Moment

Dark paints

jrlinteriors.com behr.com 8 | Michiana House and Home | March 2024 |

A versatile soft black that elevates every environment, is how Behr Paint Company describes its 2024 Color of the Year, Cracked Pepper (PPU18-01).

Architectural Digest says the hues signal a broader shift, calling Cracked Pepper specifically “moody” and “meditative.”

A survey conducted by Behr confirmed that more than half of Americans are interested in the more prevalent use of dark colors throughout their homes.

50% said darker-colored walls create a sense of comfort in a home. 54% said painting black tones creates a new vibe or energy in the home. 57% said painting a wall a darker color gives the room a designer aesthetic. 61% agreed black tones instantly give a home a fresh look. 74% said they would consider painting an area or room a dark color.

“As we look into 2024, creating a sense of comfort and belonging will continue to drive design decisions—but now, as life returns to its more familiar rhythms, it’s time to allow our senses to come alive,” Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint Company, said in a press release from the company. “From heightening the aromas of a dining room to feeling the softness of a living area, Cracked Pepper enhances the natural expression in any space.”

Cracked Pepper was a top seller at Behr and the brand’s exclusive retailer, Home Depot last year, when the color of the year was it’s counterpart “Blank Canvas,” a warm, just offwhite shade.

Paired with bolds, brights or neutrals, as an accent color or the main focus, Cracked Pepper is guaranteed to make a statement in any setting from residential to commercial spaces.

As an accent color, Cracked Pepper is subtle, almost charcoal-like. But across many surfaces, it’s bold, beautiful and striking. The color itself functions as a neutral.

Adequate lighting is essential for the heavy shade, and neutral furnishings bring it to life, enhancing the feel of details and architecture.

Cracked Pepper is one of 15 hues featured as part of the BEHR 2024 Color Trends, along with Whipped Cream (DC-001), Weathered White (HDC-NT-21), Even Better Beige (DC-010), Malted (N160-2), Tranquil Gray (DC007), Chic Taupe (N230-4), Amber Brew (MQ4-10), Riviera Beach (PPU7-07), Orange Flambe (MQ1-28), Offshore Mist (PPU13-16), Provence Blue (HDC-AC-23), Rumors (MQ115), Laguna Blue (PPU14-18), and Mountain Olive (N350-7A).

For those who aren’t comfortable jumping headfirst into the dark colors trend, Woelfel recommends starting small. Try using Cracked Pepper on a piece of furniture, a ceiling, a single wall, a kitchen island or parts of an outdoor landscape. n

One-Stop Shop

BANCI Home & Outdoor Show (Warsaw) is March 8-10

If your plans for 2024 include home improvement, then you won’t want to miss the Builders Association of North Central Indiana’s Home & Outdoor Show March 8-10 at the Warsaw Community High School TRAC at 1 Tiger Lane.

Admission and parking are free. Show hours are noon to 6 p.m. Friday, March 8; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 9; and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 10.

The BANCI Home & Outdoor Show is your one-stop shop for your home improvement needs no matter if you plan to hire a professional firm or are eager to DIY.

Thanks in part to premier sponsor Kosciusko Connect and gold sponsor Cottage Watchman Security Systems, approximately 85 vendors will be on site this year which will give guests the chance to meet and speak with local experts in a variety of fields.

“It’s really a great show,” said Kim McKibbin, Executive Officer for BANCI. “We have remodeling firms, landscape professionals, and vendors that specialize in flooring, windows, roofing and more. We’re especially excited to have Michiana Backyard this year. They have a large booth that will feature outdoor living spaces and I think that will be pretty exciting.”

The BANCI Home & Outdoor Show has been a Warsaw staple for the past 45 years and regularly welcomes approximately 1,200 visitors throughout the weekend. McKibbin said there was a bit of a rebuilding period

after the pandemic, but the show has steadily bounced back and grown as people rebalance their lives.

“They are ready to make changes and they want to talk to the professionals about the projects they have in mind,” McKibbin said. “The Home & Outdoor Show is a great opportunity to do just that and with free admission and parking, it’s a great weekend to get out and get planning.”

Live Oak Electric has been a vendor at the Home & Outdoor Show since 2021 and owner Steve Ulery says it is a great way for area residents to come out, get ideas and see what all is available from local vendors.

“Remember, the best contractors are usually booked out 2-3 months (some up to a year), and as weather improves, their schedules fill up even more quickly. It’s a great time to make connections and get things started,” he said. n

“We are so excited that the show is three days this year,” McKibbin said. “Many of our vendors, who also participate in our Warsaw show, have asked us to expand the Plymouth event and we think that the added day will give our guests the chance to enjoy a nice day out and get planning for the year ahead!”

Lawn Mowers — WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR YARD?

It’s an essential part of caring for a home. Lawncare. With so many choices, even just choosing the most necessary equipment can be a struggle. Determining the qualities of your yard in addition to what you care about most will determine which mower is best for you and your lawn. Do you want to avoid gas-powered? Would you prefer self-propelled? Is cost a concern? Or are you more interested in simplicity? Does your yard have a lot of obstacles? Is it hilly or uneven? How big is your yard?

ZERO-TURN LAWN MOWERS

This type of lawn mower is a choice option for any large yard, but the riding lawn mower can come with a hefty price range, as high as $15,000. Still, they’re a top pick for professional landscapers.

As the name implies, zero-turn lawn mowers have a turning radius of zero, meaning the machine can basically spin around itself. That also means they cut close around trees, bushes and other obstacles, and decrease the need to go back and trim later. They’re not built for every terrain though. If you have hills, rough terrain, or plan to mow a wet lawn, a regular riding mower is a better option.

RIDING LAWN MOWERS

Riding lawn mowers offer a certain convenience, saving time and energy. They’re great for larger yards and come in electric or gas options ranging from $1,000 to $1,400.

Standard riding mowers, though, have one large drawback, namely, the turn radius, meaning you’ll have to get creative in order to cut the entire lawn. They also require substantially more maintenance, needing a full tune up (yes, like a car) at least once a year, or every 100 hours of use.

ELECTRIC LAWN MOWERS

Looking to avoid using gas and do the job quieter? An electric mower might be a good option. They come in both corded and cordless options but aren’t great for large yards. With corded options, you can only go as far away as the longest extension cord you have and you’ll have to maneuver that cord around trees, obstacles or your fence line. Cordless options run on a battery that lasts 30 to 60 minutes, so if you have a large yard, you’ll need to stop to charge your battery or buy a second one to swap out mid-mow.

Still, starting at around $75, the price can’t be beat and is great for small apartment lawns or young adults just building up after moving out of the nest.

PUSH LAWN MOWERS

A gas-powered option just a step above the reel lawn mower, a push mower remains a popular choice for many homeowners and kids looking to make a quick buck practicing their entrepreneurship.

A simplistic option, with a basic engine and minimal maintenance, the major downside to the push mower is that it’s not self-propelled, so you’re handling the full weight of the machine even when going uphill. They range from $250 to $800.

SELF-PROPELLED LAWN MOWERS

Using front-wheel or rear-wheel drive, mowers that push themselves forward are known as self-propelled lawn mowers. For those interested in bagging their clippings, a rear-wheel drive option is best, while front-wheel drive ones are better for meandering obstacles.

Because the mowers themselves help to move themselves forward, self-propelled lawn mowers make easier work of hills or uneven terrains, saving time and effort. They come in both gas-powered and electric options, ranging from $280 to $2,400.

ROBOTIC LAWN MOWERS

As far as ease of use goes, robotic lawn mowers require almost no effort. The battery-powered machines function in the same way as a Roomba but for your yard.

Like other lawn mowers, though, they’re not without their drawbacks. Robotic lawn mowers aren’t an option for large hilly yards. But if you mow less than an acre of flat terrain, and can afford the $1,000 to $4,000 price tag, robotic lawn mowers are a time and energy saver.

REEL LAWN MOWER

By far, the most rudimentary option of the plethora of lawn mowers on the market today is the reel lawn mower. Updated versions of the first model, which have been on the market since the 1830s, the machines are a timeless and simple option but largely fell out of fashion after push mowers came onto the scene.

For starters, they’re silent and environmentally friendly, with no engine or motor, and thus require absolutely no gas or electricity, only a person to push it.

With an average weight of 16 pounds, they’re not tremendously heavy, but without a motor moving the blades, don’t fare well in high grass, twigs or leaves. They’re also not great for large lawns simply due to the amount of manpower required. An article by Marc McCollough of Lowes declares they’re best for lawns under a third of an acre.

Without all the bells and whistles of more modern options, reel lawn mowers range in price from $50 to $200. n

Michiana Home Show returns

Glen Whitt has stepped into the shoes of, “I guess you’d say director? I haven’t given myself any title” of the annual Michiana Home Show. “I’ve done the advertising since 1998, but took this position over in November.”

So what’s the history of the Michiana Home Show? How long has it been happening?

Whitt said, “Well, we’ve been trying to figure that out. The previous promoter did this for 25 or 30 years, and the one before him said it was close to 50 years. Of course Covid took it out of existence for two years, and last year it didn’t happen. We’re looking for a big turnout this year. We’re excited.” Bet the attendees will be, too.

The Michiana Home Show is one of many that happen in our area every spring. Whitt agreed, “All the different shows are very similar. They’re all about homebuilding and remodeling, flooring, roofing, gutters and landscaping! We have over 130 different exhibitors this year, both old and new. This year I think we have more new ones. Some will offer signups and ‘register-to-win’ things at their booths.”

And their location is a beautiful one. “It’s in the Century Center, downtown in South Bend. There is a big parking lot just beside the building, which is convenient, with handicap accessible parking,” said Whitt. Good thing, too, as this particular show will fill two floors. Whitt continued, “There will be concessions available. There will even be a bar set up, so people can grab a glass of wine or a beer, if they want, and walk through the show. You know, have a drink while they shop.”

What would you recommend for

the best time when someone is attending for the first time? I asked. Whitt was clear. “They should expect to see pretty much everything all under one roof, and with multiple options for shopping and comparing with contractors and suppliers.” Whitt plans to walk around through the show over the three days, ready to take questions and observe, help as needed. This will give ideas for next year’s show, and Whitt said it takes so much time to get everything ready to go, “It’s mind boggling! We have staff to help,

but there’s so many details.”

You have three different time slots to attend the show, and of course you can attend more than once. Tickets are $6 for adults, and children 12 and under can attend free. Whitt said, “We start Friday, March 15 and we’re there from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, March 16, it’ll be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Everything wraps up Sunday, March 17, noon to 5 p.m.” Put on some comfortable walking shoes and make your plans to attend! You won’t be sorry. n

A primer on PRUNING making the cut

Pruning is an important part of landscape maintenance. Not only does it remove dead, diseased and unsightly parts of a plant, but it also encourages healthy growth. Unfortunately, it is a procedure that intimidates most home gardeners and it is one that is easy to get wrong. Thankfully, we called in a professional to help: Kevin Kogut, landscape designer with Stone Ridge Landscaping, Inc. in Goshen. He’s got the top “Dos” and “Don’ts” when it comes to trimming your trees and shrubs, so you can make every cut count!

DOs

• DO keep the plants at the size you desire. Most of the perennials that we use can be trimmed one-half to two-thirds at the end of the growing season. Kogut says many customers locally incorporate yews and boxwoods in their landscape design. “These are extremely hardy and can be trimmed back easily,” he said. “If you do get aggressive with them and they are older plants, you will end up with holes, but if the plants you are trimming get good sun, the right amount of fertilizer and water, those holes will fill in.”

• DO choose trees with shapes that fit the area. Do not plant a large tree or evergreen too close to your house. There are several options that do well close to your residence that do not grow too large or can be kept in check.

• DO minor trimming at the start of the season. Taking excess growth out of the plant here and there should be all that is needed.

• DO your research. Before pruning or trimming, be sure to research the plant prior to digging in. There are several videos online that can help you trim and prune your specific type of tree or shrub. Ask yourself what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to trim so you can mow underneath the particular plant? Are you removing branches that are hitting the house or are you trying to shape the tree?

• DO go slow before trimming. Consider this a “measure twice, cut once” public service announcement. Evaluate your plant and ask questions about how trimming will affect the overall look of the plant.

DON’Ts

• DO NOT trim plants that are blooming. Wait until the blooms die off or at the end of the season.

• DO NOT be fooled by “dwarf varieties.” Many homeowners assume “dwarf” means that it’s small and won’t grow, but that’s not true. “It might grow slower or stay smaller, but if it likes where it is planted, it will grow and grow,” Kogut said.

• DO NOT prune during a drought or during the heat of summer. It will lead to unnecessary stress on your plant. It’s better to wait until early spring or, even better, fall to make your cuts.

• DO NOT trim with the idea of not having to do it again for several years. Remember, a proper pruning job should encourage new growth. n

Ingredients

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup frozen pearl onions-defrosted

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

3 large cloves garlic, sliced into rounds

1 large Idaho potato, skin on, diced

Kosher salt

One 28 ounce can peeled whole tomatoes

2 cups cold water

One 15 ounce can great Northern or

Directions

Frozen Vegetable Minestrone Soup

cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

Half of a 1 pound bag frozen peas, defrosted

Half of a 1 pound bag frozen corn, defrosted

3 large stalks of celery, peeled and thinly sliced

1/2 cup pesto, for garnish

1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan, for garnish

Garlic bread to go with the soupoptional

Heat a large, heavy-bottomed pot over medium heat. Add the olive oil, onions, red pepper flakes, garlic and potatoes with a generous pinch of salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring with a wooden spoon, until the vegetables are tender, 3 to 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and 2 cups of water and continue cooking until the tomatoes start to break down and mellow out, about 10 to 12 minutes.

Add the beans, peas, corn and celery and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Taste for seasoning.

Transfer to serving bowls and garnish with a few dollops of pesto and a generous sprinkle of parmesan cheese. Serve with garlic bread on the side.

Cook’s note: This is really about frozen vegetables because you may sometimes have a few bags or half bags hanging around and need a way to use them up. You can mix and match vegetables here or double up on one or remove another. The celery at the end adds crunch and varies the texture. Make sure all frozen vegetables are defrosted and drained of excess liquid. You’re not cooking frozen vegetables. They are already cooked. You’re warming them up for an instant and eating them. n

Snowdrops are a lovely sign of spring

For us gardeners, March is a terrible month. No one expects to work in the yard in January or February, although some may try. But when a warm spell comes in March, gardeners have to work hard at sitting on their hands and not getting out there. Indeed, it is too early to really “work” in the yard. Of course, there’s houseplants and maybe some indoor started seeds, but that’s rarely enough to keep one’s attention from the great outdoors.

So, what can one do? Well, lots of gardeners like to look around and plan ahead; see what’s blooming, where something could be added and what’s something new to add to those empty spaces. Of course, it means thinking ahead about six months, but that’s what gardeners do.

One of the earliest spring bloomers is the Snowdrop, a small 3-to-6-inch bulbous plant with 2 – 3 long narrow leaves and one arching, whisper-thin stem with a simple drooping flower that dangles at the end ready to bop around in the lightest breeze. These early bloomers sometimes start to bloom as early as January, pushing through the snow to make their appearance. Named after early 15th to 16th century earrings called snowdrops, these hardy plants also have a variety of common names such as dewdrops, drooping bells, Eve’s tear and Fair Maidens of February.

Snowdrops are ideal for filling in empty spots in the Spring Garden. They prefer sun to part shade but can easily be nestled under a shade tree as they enjoy the sun before the tree leaves come out. They can also be planted in woodlands, in front of a flower bed, or along a stream. Their early flowers are a welcome destination for bees and other pollinators eager to gather nectar and pollen. The flower’s honey scent is a fragrance we can all appreciate.

At a distance all snowdrops look pretty much the same, but up close there are differences in flower size, shape, and markings. Most are milky white with lime green markings, but among the 2,500 varieties one can find striped, double and yellow. The botanical name for snowdrops is Galanthus (Greek for milk flower) and the most popular varieties are Galanthus nivalis and Galanthus ikarieae. Both varieties are readily available as bulbs in the fall online or locally.

The bulbs are small, as are the plants, so it’s best to plant them in groups for better impact. They are good neutralizers and will spread as the bulbs divide. It may take a couple of years for them to establish but will return year after year with little to no gardener attention. The flowers can be deadheaded to concentrate energy into the bulb, but the foliage should be left to die back naturally which usually is done before the middle of May.

Snowdrops can also be planted now as plants, or ‘in the green’. Gardeners can share plants with others, being sure to transplant as soon as possible but while still blooming. It is also possible to buy plants online, some even from as far away as England, where they are well loved. Bulbs and plants of specialties can be quite expensive as propagation of these new varieties is a slow, slow process. For example, one bulb sold at auction in 2022 for 1,850 pounds. But most bulbs are much more economical. Plan now for fall bulbs or look for a friend with plants to share and fill in those empty spots. There is an active international community of snowdrop enthusiasts. Maybe you would like to join them! n

• The shamrock has been associated with Ireland for centuries and was considered a sacred plant that symbolized the arrival of spring. But the meal most associated with St. Patrick’s Day–corned beef and cabbage–was an American choice, rather than the Irish meal of ham and cabbage.

• And of course we hear about ‘the wearin’ o’ the green.’ It’s even a tradition to pinch anyone not wearing green. But blue was the color associated with St. Patrick! Green became officially associated in 1798. And since 1962, the Chicago River has been dyed green in celebration.

• There’s a lot more to March than St. Patrick’s Day, though. If you were born before 150 B.C. (not likely) this was the first month of the year, not the third. The oldest Roman calendars showed a 10 month year, March to December. January and February were just two nameless months called “winter.” That’s right. Winter was literally so awful it didn’t deserve a spot on the calendar!

Did You Know?

While St. Patrick’s Day is now associated with wearing green, parades and beer, it wasn’t always that way. And surprisingly, historians believe that St. Patrick was born in Britain, not Ireland! Among the legends associated with St. Patrick is that he stood atop an Irish hillside and banished snakes from Ireland, but research suggests snakes never occupied the Emerald Isle in the first place. There are no signs of snakes in the country’s fossil record. Makes a good story, though!

• March was historically the perfect month for farmers to resume farming, and warriors to resume warring

• And thanks to Shakespeare, we remember the Ides of March, the day when Julius Caesar attended a senate meeting at the Theatre of Pompey, and was murdered by as many as 60 conspirators. In a bit of irony, the spot where Caesar died is protected in Rome today as a nokill cat sanctuary.

• March 6 is The Day of the Dude, which encourages all participants to honor The Big Lebowski by “takin’ ‘er easy all day, man,” and buying a new rug to tie the entire room together. Start shopping!

• March 10 begins Daylight Savings Time this year. We’ll be able to stop saying “It’s dark before I even leave work!” Nevertheless, we’ll still battle to end DST once and for all. Maybe this will be the year!

• March 14, it’s Pi Day, celebrating the annual occurrence of 3/14 with math jokes, pi-reciting competitions, and the best part of all: freshly baked pie. Get out those rolling pins! One more thing, if you like Girl Scout cookies,

you owe Juliette Gordon Low a big thank you, because she founded the Girl Scouts in March.

• March Madness runs from March 19 to April 8 this year.

• If you were born in March, your flower is a daffodil and you have two birthstones to choose from–aquamarine and bloodstone (which symbolizes courage.) There are two Zodiac signs; Pisces until March 20, and Aries after that.

• The Eiffel Tower was ascended for the first time in March, led by Eiffel himself. But the elevators were not ready for use, so it was achieved on foot and took more than an hour to accomplish.

• Also in March, an important part of President John F. Kennedy’s legacy: he founded the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. This volunteer organization has sent at least 235,000 Americans to developing countries, ready to

One last thing: was sold in bottles for the first time on March 12, 1894. The original recipe contained cocaine, derived from an extract of the coca leaf, hence “Coca” (“Cola” came from the kola nut, which added caffeine.) At the time, cocaine was legal and a common ingredient in medicines, as it was believed safe in small amounts.

and now you know!
