DAVID E. WHITE

KNOX, IN - David E. White, 70, died Sunday, November 24, 2024. He was born July 27, 1954, in Knox, Indiana to the late Vernon “Duner” and Betty Goble White.

David was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting deer and squirrels. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and had been a member of the Christian Motorcycle Assoc. He also enjoyed flying remote control planes, woodworking and quilting. He was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Regina (Poulson) White, his children: Katie (Eric) Frankenberger of Elkhart, Indiana and Keith (Amie) White of Knox, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one brother, John White of Knox and one sister, Dawn (David) Armentrout of Walkerton, Indiana.

Services were held Wednesday, November 27, at the M.C. Smith Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church. Arrangements were made by M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox.

MARTHA TOLSON

KNOX, IN - Martha Tolson, 76, died Sunday, November 24, 2024 in Knox, Indiana. She was born August 24, 1948, in Wabash, Indiana to the late Alonzo and Mary Ann (Shepherd) Shepherd. On April 20, 1966, in Toto, Indiana, she married Albert “Dude” Tolson. He died January 31, 2008.

Martha was a member of the Outreach Tabernacle Church and was passionate about reading the Bible. She enjoyed watching Golden Girls, sitting outside watching clouds and spending time with her family. She had worked as a laborer at MPI.

She is survived by one daughter, sherry (Eric) Sobieck of Knox, two sons: Douglas Wayne Tolson of Farmersburg, Indiana and Albert (Rachel) Tolson Jr. of Knox, eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren, four brothers: Alonzo (Vickie) Shepherd of Lillian, Alabama, Phillip (Sandy) Shepherd and Richard (Lisa) Shepherd, both of Knox and Robert Shepherd of DeLong, Indiana and nine sisters: Anna (Dave) Dare, Rose Tolson, Edie Romenzak, Ramona (Jerry) Redlin, Anita (Larry) Redlin and Tammy (Jo) Hoy, all of Knox, Nancy Tuley of Winamac, Indiana Leota F. (Doug) Griffith of Wheatfield, Indiana and Wanda (Brian) Pinson of North Judson. She was preceded in death by one son, Gregory Scott Tolson, one brother, William Clay Shepherd and one sister, Annette Landrum.

Services were held Friday, November 29, at Braman & Son Memorial Chapel. Burial was in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Knox. Memorials may be made to the family.

Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

MARILYN J. McCORKEL

CHESTERTON, IN - FORMERLY OF NORTH JUDSON, IN - Marilyn J. McCorkel, 84, died Sunday, November 24, 2024 in Valparaiso, Indiana. She was born march 5, 1940, in Knox, Indiana to the late Offley and Verna (Pirrung) Highwood.

Marilyn was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Chesterton Fire Department. She enjoyed listening to country music, going to festivals, traveling and spending time with her family. She had worked as a realtor.

She is survived by one daughter, Julie McCorkel of Chesterton and one son, Harold McCorkel Jr. of North Judson, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold and one brother, Warren Highwood.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, November 27 at Highland Cemetery in North Judson. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Arrangements were made by Braman & Son Memorial Chapel in Knox, Indiana.

DOROTHY SALYER

NORTH JUDSON, IN - Dorothy Salyer, 85, died Monday, November 25, 2024 in North Judson, Indiana.

She was born April 30, 1939 in Salyersville, Kentucky to the late Riley and Fannie (Cole) Nichols. On August 13, 1969, she married Ishmael Salyer. He died April 25, 1998.

Dorothy was a member of the Full Gospel Assembly Church of Knox. She enjoyed needlepoint, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family. She had worked as a laborer for Aker Plastics.

She is survived by one daughter, Arlene Salyer of North Judson, four sons: William Michael (Lori) Rowe and Douglas (Kim) Rowe, both of Lima, Ohio, Kenneth Salyer of Spencerville, Ohio and Todd (JoAnn) Salyer of Wapaketa, Ohio, fourteen grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, three brothers: Ronnie Nichols and Bill Nichols, both of Ohio, Bubby Nichols of Oklahoma and three sisters: Lora Ward of North Judson, Ruth Rowe of Mosherville, Michigan and Boots Rowe of Lima. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Darlene Dorsett, one son Keith Salyer, one granddaughter, Jessica Judy, one great granddaughter, Kierstyn Parker, one great grandson, Kamdon Lines, four brothers: Walter, Amor, Paul and Clifford Nichols and three sisters: Catherine Nichols, Caroline Jacobs and Martha Jennings.

Services were held Wednesday, November 27, at Braman & Bailey Funeral Home with Pastor Nick Columbo officiating. Burial was in the Highland Cemetery in North Judson. Memorials may be made to the Full Gospel Assembly Church of Knox. Arrangements were made by Braman & Bailey Funeral Home in North Judson.

PHYLLIS KNAPP

GREENTOWN, IN - FORMERLY OF FRANCESVILLE, IN - Phyllis Knapp, 96, died Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Century Fields in Greentown, Indiana. She was born April 12, 1928, in Francesville, Indiana, to the late Hugh H. and Anna I. (Hall) Lowry.

Phyllis was a 1946 graduate of Francesville High School and attended the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville for many years. She retired from Parkview Haven as the Activity Director and for many years she owned and operated her own beauty shop in Sweetser, Indiana. She was a talented seamstress, making dresses for her granddaughter and crafted Cabbage Patch dolls and their outfits.

She is survived by one daughter, Annie (Donn) Larrison of Converse, Indiana and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by Annie’s father, Adam R. Pfledderer, husbands: Fermin L. Cox and Irvin A. Knapp and two brothers: Stanley D. and Billie E. Lowry.

Services were held Monday, December 2, at Frain Mortuary QuerryUlbricht Chapel in Francesville, with Ministers of the Church officiating. Burial was in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church in Francesville. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville.

MARCELLA MARIE GUDEMAN

FRANCESVILLE, IN - Marcella Marie Gudeman, 94, died at 7:10am, Wednesday, November 27, 2024. She was born September 7, 1930 in Francesville, Indiana to the late Frederick and Katie (Munz) Gutwein. On December 31, 1950, she married Wendell Gene Gudeman.

Marcella was a graduate of Francesville High School and the Indiana Business College. She was a member of the Francesville Apostolic Christian Church. She enjoyed singing and was a drum majorette in high school. She was a lover of reading and the use of proper English and was quick with numbers and enjoyed bookkeeping.

She is survived by four sons: Daniel (Rebecca) Gudeman of Westfield, Indiana, Tom Gudeman of South Holland, Illinois, Randy (Becky) Gudean of Plantation, Florida and Matthew (Tracey) Gudeman of Grayslake, Illinois, one daughter, Wendy (Jon) Schwab of Remington, Indiana, sixteen grandchildren, forty great grandchildren and two sisters: Fern Leman and Suzanne Cook, both of Francesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wendell, three sisters: Louise Albrecht Heinold, Esther Gray and Dorothy Arlene Beer and five brothers: Francis, Harvey Frederick, James Carl, Edwin Conrad and Glen Munz Gutwein.

Services were held Tuesday, December 3, at the Apostolic Christian Church, with Ministers of the Church officiating. Burial was in the Roseland Cemetery in Francesville. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkview Haven Retirement Home. Arrangements were made by Frain Mortuary Querry-Ulbricht Chapel in Francesville.

ROGER WAYNE CARPENTER

MONTEREY, IN - Roger Wayne Carpenter, 71, died Saturday, November 30, 2024 at his home. He was born September 6, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Fred and Edith (Parrish) Carpenter. On June 5, 2018, in Las Vegas, Nevada, he married Judith Davis.

Roger enjoyed camping, reading, traveling, nature, car shows, and auctions. He had worked for himself in the automotive repair and sales business.

He is survived by his wife, Judith, one son, Roger (Stephanie) Carpenter Jr, step children, one granddaughter and one sister, Liz (Dave) Veit. He was preceded in death by one brother, Sergent Wade Warner Carpenter.

A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 1pm Thursday, December 5, at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation from 12 Noon until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte, Indiana.

MEETING NOTICE:

The annual meeting of the Community Services of Starke County, Inc.’s general membership will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. at 311 E. Culver Road, Knox, Indiana. The public is invited to attend but only regular members will be entitled to vote on the program plans and the executive board appointees for the year 2025.

Regular members are those who have paid the annual membership fee of $10.00 in 2024.

Community Services of Starke County, Inc. provides services in order for families to remain independent in their own homes. Services include: public transportation, nutrition, information and assistance, FEMA, Salvation Army, energy assistance, call-a-day, food pantry, and health equipment loan program. The executive board presently serving include Mark Rippy, president, Tom Torsell, vice-president; Susan Christian, secretary; Mike Tolson, treasurer; and members, Arlene Sellers, Tiffany Nagai, Mike Yankauskas, Charlie Adams, Jacalynn Ciboch, Doris Kibert, Marilyn Zabinski, and Sheri Bartoli.
