THE PEACH REVIEW®
Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis Girl with a Pearl Earring arrived in Atlanta back on June 23, 2013. Since then it has drawn thousands of visitors to the High Museum to take a peek at the collection. The exhibit, “Dutch Paintings From The Mauritshuis”, marks the first time Johannes Vermeer’s most wellknown painting would be seen in the Southeast. We can tell you firsthand, it’s an amazing exhibit giving the Dutch Golden Age painters their well deserved exposure. In this exhibit you’ll find works from Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, Jan Steen, and many more. All of the paintings looks amazing but we’ll let you in on a few of our personal favorites:
Jacob Van Ruisdael- View of Haarlem Jan van GoyenView of the Rhine near Hochelten Jan Steen- As the old sing, to Twitter the Young Rembrandt van Rijn- Portrait of an elderly man (From 1667, the last dated picture of his).
Rembrandt 1118, Portrait of an Elderly Man
The exhibit will be here until September 29, 2013 so make sure to go see it before it leaves! If you’re a fan of art and special exhibits, the High Museum is one place that is a must-see.

Atlanta International Fashion Week Fashion and style were alive and kicking last week for Atlanta’s International Fashion Week (AIFW). Guests and participants came from all over the country to see what Atlanta had to offer. One thing I’ve noticed is the continuity of one of the grand finale show; the show at 200 Peachtree.
This is where we found ourselves last week to close out with a fashionably loud statement of “We do fashion here.” It’s always fun to find models and designers on the upswing of their success and work before they’ve made it big. Here we saw everything from child models to independent stylists, vendors, and up-and-coming designers. The entire week was filled with highlighted destinations and attractions for visitors and various fashion shows around the city. All of this, leading up to the grand finale at 200 Peachtree. Here is where we saw looks and styles from the likes of Ruffled Runway, Little Miss Fashion, Anna Victoria Designs, Maye, Fabrik and more. In between the music and the runway show there were cocktails available, various vendors to browse, and afterwards hosted a great networking opportunity to all who attended.

THE PEACH REVIEW®
So, I don’t know if any of you guys were confused as I was. I thought this GOW (God of War)game took place after GOW3, because I really wanted to see who or what Kratos will face next after he killed all of the gods. It was a prequel to GOW 1 and 2, but yet it reminded me a little of two how you have to go against the sisters of Faith. In this one you have to go against the Furies sisters and you’re breaking your oath with Aries so that you can be free from him… from the gods. I felt like the game itself was short, it didn’t take me that long to beat it, I mean I was hype about playing it but I just felt like it was short. There were some parts where I struggle with, but it didn’t take me long to figure out how to get past it. Game play is still the same as the other GOW games so nothing is that different, Kratos just has different special moves. The level designs and character designs were really good. One of my favorite character designs they did was the Juggernaut, as a big elephant creature. I feel as if they focused more on the online play, and that’s something that’s really new to the GOW universe. The online play of God of War Ascensions was hit or miss. I think they could’ve done with out it. I just wish that they made it a little longer, I didn’t feel like I was on edge like I was with the previous GOW games. I give God of War Ascensions a 8 out of 10. -TBZ All content and images are property of The Peach Review® unless otherwise noted

Nothing much has changed about Dead Island Riptide. It has the same game play just an upgraded story. Really the game was supposed to be a DLC (Downloadable Content) to the original Dead Island, but the developers decided to make it a separate game. The new additions to DIR are a new character, new weapons, and a new upgrades option. One of the new things I like is that It’s in real time (they added rain in it, and you can ride a boat). The down fall about the boat is that zombies can’t drown in this one like they did in the original Dead Island which was fun kicking zombies in a pool and watching them drown. Story wise let’s just say the government is sticking their hands in it, trying to make super humans. The game is not bad, but the first one is better, playing with people online is fun, id give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Miller Lite Stand Up
Talk about a great night?! Another one of the many free events held at Center Stage this summer, Miller Lite Stand Up scored big points during their visit to Atlanta. At first glance at the line outside you would think “whatʼs happening there?!” or “thereʼs no way weʼre going to get in.” I have to commend Miller Lite and Center Stage because not only did everyone make it in, everyoneʼs wristband came with free vouchers for Miller Lite. Food was available for a reasonable price and bottled water was free as well. What a great idea that was promoted through social media
(we found out via Twitter), to invite guests to a comedy tour with just a RSVP. The Miller Lite national comedy competition came to a close in ATL at Midtownʼs Center Stage with a great audience, panel judges, and comedians. Judges included Marlon Wayans, Donnell Rawlings, and Michael Blackson (all pictured above). A special performance from last yearʼs winner LaVar Walker was basically an extra gift to the audience! We could see why the “Stand Up. Itʼs Miller Time” tour was so successful and weʼre pretty sure

next year (its third year) will bring even more laughs. The competition was fierce and all of the comics had the crowd belting out laughter. The comedians included: K Dubb (Charlotte), Kellye Howard (Chicago), Keisha Hunt (Dallas), and Shaddy Feel Good (New Orleans). These rising stand-up comedians gave us quite a show and we have to be honest. As far as preperformance crowd support, K Dubb had his own fan club in attendance, some people even had signs!

It was great to see all the support for the comics and Keisha Hunt ended up being the winner. Hunt won the $10,000 grand prize and will be featured in an upcoming issue of COMPLEX Magazine. Free admission, free drinks, and free comedy? The night couldnʼt have been better! Enjoy the pictures and be sure to look out for their tour next year.

Bentley Unveils the 2014
Flying Spur
On Friday, July 19th, Bentley Atlanta unveiled the new 2014 Flying Spur at Phipps Plaza in Buckhead. In the crosshairs of the Gucci store and the escalators nearby, Bentley Atlanta courted off a large area in white drapes in anticipation for an energetic crowd anxious to see the new 2014 lineup. Bentley Atlanta had a white 2014 Flying Spur and a red Continental GTC present for guests to sit in and experience the luxury. A large number of guests appeared for this invitation only event which included a showcase by Breitling, a DJ, complimentary spirits, and too many photo-ops to count. Among the guests, we spotted a few familiar faces in that of Bobby Valentino, Young Jeezy, and Big Tigger just to name a few. Every seam in the A-Grade leather is individually sewn. Every layer of veneer is lacquered and polished by hand. The entire cabin, from the wood and the leather to the architecture that supports the car’s digital technology has been fitted by hand. While the 6 litre W12 engine can propel the new Flying Spur from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 mph, the environment inside remains one of absolute calm – not least because of the specially designed sound proofing installed in the floor and the doors.

Atlanta Streets Alive!
Now in it’s fourth year, Atlanta Streets Alive was an amazing turn out on Sunday September 8th. There was an estimated 61,000 people that came out and shut down Peachtree Street for 4 straight hours between 2pm-6pm. From Downtown to Midtown adults and children were: skateboarding, long boarding, riding bikes, walking, line dancing, skating, playing hockey, you name it, people were out doing it! It was an unbelievable turnout that inspired the public to come out, be active, and connect with the community. There was great music playing everywhere and performances on every corner. The energy was at an all-time high! Some discussed coming together to make this happen once a month during the warmer seasons. The next Atlanta Streets Alive will be Sunday October 6th 2pm-6pm On Highland/MonroeBoulevard/Virginia. There they will have “The Great Atlanta Halloween Bike Parade” that will start the festivities. It will line up at the intersection of Sampson and Highland Ave in Old Fourth Ward at 1:30pm and starts at 2pm. They can always use Volunteers to help with these events. We hope you can join us for another fun filled adventure. You can see more pictures HERE

The Peach Review速 THROWDOWN
August 24th we had the opportunity to watch the Red Bull Throwdown, which was held at Center Stage this year. Red Bull Throwdown presents the new standard of physical movement, where all styles will battle to find the most complete tricker. The sport of tricking pushes human physical limits through the mix of martial arts, tumbling, and break dancing. There were over 300 trickers that supported this event. Every one of all ages came out to support; parents, siblings and friends filled the seats shouting and cheering all competitors.
Red Bull THROWDOWN
We watched the 16 best tricking athletes battle headto-head to earn their right to call themselves the most complete tricker. Eight handpicked top athletes from around the world automatically entered the finals through an exclusive athlete invite, including premium headphones from sponsor Sol Republic. A panel of judges determined who will make the cut for the remaining eight spots based on the quality of skills demonstrated in kicking, creativity, and level of difficulty.

THROWDOWN From the look of it, everyone was amazed and inspired watching some of the more experienced athlets pull of some difficult tricks. Being literally on the stage front row, you really get to see first hand how high these guys are really jumping and flipping. It takes a lot of energy to incorporate the tricks they had to perform. Sixteen athletes made the Red Bull Throwdown finals in Atlanta, but it was Will Coneys of Arlington, Virginia, who reigned champion of the one-on-one tricking battle. We would like to thank Center Stage for hosting another great event.

In Lee Daniels’ The Butler, Cecil Gaines (Forest Whitaker) serves 8 presidents during his time as a butler at the White House while also facing the civil rights movement, Vietnam, and many other events that shape his family’s lives. Gloria Gaines (Oprah Winfrey), Cecil’s wife, played the role of the mother, wife, and overall support system that kept things balanced since he was away at the White House. The only story more interesting than watching Gloria and Cecil balance their marriage is to see the matriculation of their 2 sons Charlie (Isaac White) and Louis (David Oyelowo). Watching them grow up during Vietnam and the civil rights movement really gives insight into what black families were dealing with during these 2 major events in american history. Other notable faces you’ll catch in this are Cuba Gooding Jr., Lenny Kravitz, Jane Fonda, Vanessa Redgrave, Mariah Carey, David Banner, Jim Gleason, Nelsan Ellis, Minka Kelly, John Cusack, and there’s actually a few we didn’t mention just as a surprise! The film is based on a true story and the acting/casting was excellent. It’s very important that we learn from our history to make sure we can form a better and more enlightening future. 9 out of 10 -Jon J. In Ryan Coogler’s first feature film, Fruitvale Station presents the story of Oscar Grant, a Bay Area native whose life was abruptly cut short on New Year’s Eve 2008. The movie was written and directed by Coogler and won 2 awards at make-or-break film festivals (1 respectively at Sundanceand Cannes). This film does an excellent job of humanizing Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) and showing the type of person he was. Most of America knew him as another victim of police brutality and racial profiling, but the film does a great job of making a personal connection. After watching the film you can see a young man who wasn’t perfect, but was determined to conquer his inner demons and become a better person for his mother (Octavia Spencer) , girlfriend (Melonie Diaz), and his daughter (Ariana Neal). There were multiple scenes where you can see him truly making an effort to turn his life around and it strikes a chord. That’s probably why it hurts so bad when you witness the inevitable. You’ve gone 70 minutes through this adventure with a character you’ve made a connection with, and in an instant, its taken away. The film is powerful. We see a young man just like any other kid with friends, disagreements with his mother, and a very goofy and proud father. His sense of humor and his liking towards Bay-Area music paint the scene (to us anyway) of any ordinary young person that may or may not be, trying to find themselves and matriculate into a fine adult. We have to give this one a 9 out of 10. The movie is excellent and we can’t continue to say enough great things about The Weinstein Company. They continue to keep a diverse array of movies in their pipeline and that should be noted. Dreamworks brings us a new story entitled Turbo, about a snail who dreams of a fast life. Turbo (Ryan Reynolds) grew tired of his boring life and being slow along with his other escargot pals. His dreams were bigger than the front yard, his dream was to win the Indy 500. Speed was on his brain 24/7 just like any other person with a dream, it was all he thought about. But when his desire for speed almost gets him killed and endangers the other snails, his long-time friend Chet (Paul Giamatti) tells him to get real before he gets them both killed. After that confrontation Turbo re-evaluates his life and that is where the real story begins. The movie is fun and in typical Dreamworks fashion, has lots of comedy for adults in the film (surely in expectation of you dealing with kids). I thought it was extremely funny to have Samuel L. Jackson (as Whiplash) and Ken Jeong (as Kim Ly) play animated roles. Another surprise was Snoop Lion as the voice of Smoove Move. The movie is funny, the animation is pretty good, and after you watch it you’ll know why “White…. Shadoooooooow” will be relevant. 8.5 out of 10. It’s worth checking out.

The Wolverine, directed by James Mangold, tells a tale of survival and friendship once reunited with an old acquaintance. This acquaintance requests his presence back in Japan and forces Logan (Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman) to confront his own demons that have been contributing to his sleepless nights. If you follow the comic book series you’ll see some familiar names and faces. Wolverine’s love interest Mariko (Tao Okamoto), Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), and a surprise in the form of Silver Samurai (but we can’t tell you who that is). A type of confidant turned body guard, Yukio (Rila Fukushima) finds Logan in the wilderness and brings him back to Japan. The story from there gets interesting as the family of a billionaire get into a dispute about their father’s estate and Logan is faced with 2 important choices. The film features lots of action, good fight scenes (especially the high-speed rail scene), and a good story line to make for a great movie. Marvel fans won’t be disappointed in this one. 9 out of 10.

THE PEACH REVIEW®
To sum up this movie in 2 words? Absolutely hilarious! We’re The Millers, directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, introduces us to the life of a veteran pot dealer named David Clark (Jason Sudeikis). David hits a string of bad luck and loses his stash. In an attempt to recoup his losses he agrees to smuggle marijuana into the U.S. from Mexico. In order to do this without drawing attention to himself, he creates a family! His family consists of Rose O’Reilly (Jennifer Aniston), Casey Mathis (Emma Roberts), and Kenny Rossmore (Will Poulter). With this being the summer of Sudeikis I think he was perfect as David Clark in this role. You adventure with this faux-family across the southern border into Mexico and come across new adventures along the way. All 4 of them have their own style of comedy in the movie and Jennifer Aniston had a lot of high points. I’d say see this immediately when you can. A few issues back I spoke about how “Horrible Bosses” went under the radar when it was released and it was shockingly funny. This movie is hilarious and would probably be even funnier the 2nd time around! 9 out of 10.

The movie Closed Circuit starts out in a crowded London market when out of nowhere a van explodes (terrorist attack) killing almost everyone in the marketplace. Through this high-profile terrorism case it binds together 2 ex-lovers in Martin Rose (Eric Bana) and Rebecca Hall (Claudia Simmons-Howe), the lawyers assigned to the case. I have to say, the film had good potential but never really took off. There were a lot of details that were left out and a few things were confusing. It was good to see Erica Bana (just because I’m a personal fan) but the movie all around is average at best. The idea and what they were attempting to do are very cool, it just didn’t come together as well as it could’ve. A few of the concrete things are they’re both lawyers, Martin Rose cheated on his wife with Rebecca, and MI5 is apparently England’s FBI. This one’s definitely a Red Box-er. 7 out of 10.

ICONA POP
The country of Sweden has brought two things I love to America: Svedka Vodka and Icona Pop. Formed in 2009, Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo hailing from Stockholm, joined forces to bring you a sound described best as ‘indie pop.’ Their debut single, “Manners” received welcoming reviews from top press such as NME, The Guardian, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork Media. The follow up single and their most popular song, “I Love It” has gained them performances at many

summer festivals worldwide as well as spots on television series’, and commercials. Catchy pop lyrics with heavy bass layered shows keep you moving and grooving through the entire set. Many people have pegged them as one hit wonders but it seems as after every show they do they win the hearts of the attendees. Once during a sold out show in New York Hjelt yelled out “I wanna eat you all!”. If that isn’t genuine fan love I don’t know what is. Besides, who
doesn’t want to see two hot chicks recreating their music live on stage? Especially with their newest track, a girl-powered rendition of Tupac’s classic hit “Girlfriend”. The Icona Pop Tour is shining the light on their much-anticipated full-length debut album release. The tour started August 12 in North Carolina and will finish October 27 in Stuttgart, Germany. THE PEACH REVIEW®
As an adult who grew up in the 90′s, hearing that the Goo Goo Dolls would be coheadlining with Matchbox Twenty opened up a treasure box of nostalgia. Both of these bands helped to make growing up in the 90′s wonderful, kind of like cookies making milk awesome. Lakewood Amphitheater is one of my favorite venues for summer concerts. I have read tons of horrible reviews on this venue but personally I love the whole experience. It reminds me of a one-day festival because it is huge and can hold so many people on the lawn and under the pavilion. The traffic to get to the venue was a nightmare and that could be because these bands are so awesome that it was packed or that there seems to be only one way to the venue. What should’ve been a 15 minute drive turned into a 2 1/2 hour coast. I missed the opener Kate Earl, and ended up finally sitting down in the middle of the Goo Goo Dolls set. I wish I were old enough to have gone to a concert back in their prime so I had something to compare it to. Johnny and Robby lead most of the songs with vocals while the rest of the band including drummer Mike seemed to just play their part. The Goo Goo Dolls have 9 albums under their belt with the 10th, Magnetic, released this year. The crowd was a mix of fans ranging from ages 25-40 years old. These fans have
been around for at least 20 years, which is pretty amazing. I loved the saxophone during “Give A Little Bit”. Things like this always make live music memorable. Besides playing their most popular songs “Iris” and “Better Days”, the Dolls dedicated “Name” to their fans. The best part was when Johnny played a wrong note on the guitar and said “I f*cked up. I never said I was a good guitar player”. Everyone laughed and cheered even louder. I ran into some friends during the intermission who were sitting on the lawn and went to visit them. The lawn area is general admission but I will agree with the band that said that the lawn area is the most fun because the most

interesting things happen out there. Matchbox Twenty began their set playing “Disease”, while red block lighting effects were flashing in the background with images of the band. I really enjoyed the stage production of Matchbox Twenty through the entire show. I always thought Matchbox Twenty was from Atlanta and learned recently they were formed in Orlando but spent time recording their first two albums in “Hotlanta” as Rob Thomas referred to it. I interned at Tree Sound Studios in Norcross nad remember seeing that Matchbox Twenty recorded some of their music

“Thomas mentioned their deep appreciation for their fans and their memories of two of Atlanta’s iconic venues, Smith’s Olde Bar and the The Highlander.” there. Thomas mentioned their deep appreciation for their fans and their memories of two of Atlanta’s iconic venues, Smith’s Olde Bar and the The Highlander. The crowd seemed to enjoy their classic songs, “3 AM”, “Back to Good”, and “Real World”. But I was happy to see that many true fans knew the words to their newer hits “She’s So Mean” and “Radio” from their latest album “North”. One of my friends, Sylvana, was one of those life long fans who knew every word to every song they played that night. During the perfect summer song “I Will” it gave me butterflies to see her genuinely singing and swaying to the music. That is how live music is supposed to make people feel. I think Matchbox Twenty did an awesome job connecting with their fans and this is probably the reason after twenty years they can still pack out a venue of this size.

dion Primo Dion Primo releases his first track off of his new album “ROOM 13” Dion Primo releases his new single to the delight of many before he debuts his new project ROOM 13. As a songwriter and artist, Dion Primo is bringing both creativity and originality. Primo (as I know him) is a creative of sorts. A man who sees life as a continuous opportunity to motivate, inspire, and to promote creativity and love. He as a person, is as genuine as they come, and that same life perspective can be felt in his music. By simply listening to the lyrics of his new track “F— with you”, the chorus spells out guidance to those who are looking to find themselves or new motivation: “Shout out to the motha—— dreamer. Before you ever try to make somebody a believer, you gotta f— with you.”

THE PEACH REVIEW®
“Before you try to sell people on your ideas, you have to believe them yourself” There’s a lot of undeniable truth on this track, which adds to its appeal (aside from the beat). In a way all his own, Primo takes the task of explaining that delicate balance in all things that exist in our world. He explains in detail that before you can convince anyone else of what you’re saying, you yourself have to be convinced. Before you try to sell people on ideas A) and B), YOU have to believe in A) and B). “Everybody can’t be real” and “everybody can’t shine, somebody gotta be lying,” are among the truths that exist. If everybody was real, where’s the space for someone to standout? If everybody were given the chance to “shine” then what would happen? If everyone told the truth, where would the status of rap music be at the moment? The question is even poised by his feature on this track PBZE T.O when he says “You can’t please everybody so live. If everybody just played they role like Pippen, but everybody wanna be a f——– Blake Griffin.” This line right here is why often times groups and teams find their demise. The failure to master what you know and understand your place is crucial in life and in music. “Stay in your lane” is what I hear often times in reference to what makes groups work. But PBZE T.O makes a great point through the Pippen reference. What if Scottie Pippen tried to be the star and take the last second shots? That role and responsibility was specifically meant for Michael Jordan. But what worked with the championship Bulls’ teams is that everyone knew their role and stayed in their lane. So if you don’t wanna go along with everyone else, have an allotted lane to stay in, or feel like your settling when you feel like YOU should be the one shining, it sounds like you need to “f— witchu” as so aptly put by Dion Primo. If you know Dion Primo the person, then hearing him promote things like self-confidence and goal achievement should be of no surprise. You also know that if he says it, its real. It’s the very monotony of sound that makes producers like J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League stand out. That same monotony in lyrics are where we find people like Kendrick Lamar and yes, Dion Primo, who choose not to settle and rap like the masses. But yet deliver a message of their choosing to accurately display a perspective or a goal. Or in the case of this track a very important message: Live for yourself, stay true to you, if you can’t/don’t want to rely on anyone else you can always depend on yourself. You can hear his new single by clicking PLAY (Lyrics are explicit)

The Peach Review®
Georgia Tech Football has begun! On opening day, every school wants to start the season out right. They want plenty of crowd support, all the starters are healthy, and most importantly they want to win! Well to start the season and the game, Georgia Tech is proving to be quite the problem as the 1st quarter ended with the Yellow Jackets up by 28 points; as in 28-0. The Jackets were firing on all cylinders that beautiful afternoon at Bobby Dodd and the fans were loving it! To show their dominance they scored on their first 4 out of 5 drives. The 2nd quarter opened up with a 59 yard touchdown reception by Running Back David Sims. With the pointafter, the Jackets found themselves in a commanding 35-0 lead over Elon. As the Phoenix made their way downfield slowly, it was a breakout run by Tracey Coppedge for 17 yards that got the team going. As they faced a critical 3rd down they handed the ball off to Karl Bostick who fought for the 6 yard gain and the 1st down. Once Elon reached the red-zone they faced a 3rd and goal situation where Mike Quinn’s pass was intercepted by Tyler Marcordes for a 95 yard touchdown return. So at this point (and there was still 9 minutes left in the 1st half) you got the feeling this was going to turn into a drubbing. With the score at 42-0 and still in the 2nd quarter, you got an overwhelming taste of satisfaction. Like “this is what opening day should be like.” The 1st half showed zero points for the Phoenix but their offense (aside from the 2 interceptions from Quarterback Mike Quinn) did fairly well. With 63 rushing yards, 120 yards passing and 1 penalty, you would think they were still in the game. But it was the fumble, the I-N-T’s, and the defense that was making this into a blowout. Although the Jackets looked like a well-oiled machine in the 1st half there was still room for improvement. All content and images are property of The Peach Review® unless otherwise noted

With 289 yards of total offense in the 1st half they still had 3 penalties for 25 yards. Once the 2nd half began the Jackets ended their 1st drive with a 2 yard rush for a touchdown by Quarterback Vad Lee. So with 9:25 left in the 3rd quarter the score was now 49-0 in favor of Georgia Tech. Just as Elon was making their way down the field in response Mike Quinn threw another interception, this time to Chris Milton, who returned it for a touchdown. The last time Georgia Tech had 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns in the same game was Sept. 9, 2006 against Samford (before that it was 1966). Vad Lee showed off his arm-strength on the run with a 50-yd strike followed by a 24 yard touchdown pass to Robert Godhigh. After the PAT (point-after try) the lead swelled to 63-0. The drive was 4 plays and 82 yards with only 1:17 elapsed. So at this point with 4:28 left in the 3rd quarter (yes the 3rd quarter) you almost wish they had a mercy rule like Little League Baseball and Madden (In the video game John Madden Football, if you were up by 21 pts. and your opponent couldn’t score on the following drive? He accepted the game as a loss). To end the 3rd quarter we heard that the 173 interception-return yards by the Jackets was a school record.

At this point we were well overdue for some back-ups to get some playing time. So when backup Quarterback Justin Thomas came in the game, he took full advantage with a rushing touchdown. It was time for another stat after this historic touchdown; with Thomas’ touchdown this marks the highest points scored since they put up 63 against the Navy in 2001. This also was the largest margin of victory in ACC history! In front of 45,759 people. I’d say it was a great day for Tech football! Your final score Georgia Tech 70, Elon 0.

Georgia State debuts new season with new coach GSU vs. Samford Georgia State’s opening game against Samford presented a fresh new opportunity for 1st year coach Trent Miles. Part of the allure of Coach Miles was the turnaround that was made in the program at Indiana State. His résumé includes various responsibilities such as Running Backs Coach at Washington and Wide Receivers Coach at Notre Dame and Stanford. In total, Trent Miles has coached 8 teams, including a stint in the NFL. With a diverse coaching résumé it looks like Coach Miles will be a good fit for the Panthers as they look to impress this season. Early in the 1st quarter we saw Wide Receiver Kelton Hill catch a touchdown for Georgia State and Running Back Fabian Truss returned a kick off for a touchdown for Samford. Quarterback Andy Summerlin struggled to get his Bulldogs moving as he threw 2 incomplete passes and had a short gain from a shovel pass to Jay West. As the quarter was coming to a close, the Panthers offense was skittish as well after Kelton Hill fumbled a pass out-ofbounds and the Panthers were getting little help from

GSU vs. Samford their running game. Once the 2nd Quarter began, Wide Receiver Albert Wilson came up big on 2 completions to keep the drive alive. After Quarterback Ronnie Bell almost threw an interception, he recovered on 3rd & 7 and launched a long ball to the corner to Kelton Hill for a touchdown. The 1st half ended with a partially blocked field goal (by GSU), a blocked punt (by Samford) and a turnover on downs by Samford on the Panthers’ 1yd line. When the 1st half ended the score was 14-7 Georgia State. Once the 2nd half started, we didn’t see anymore points on the board until there were 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Samford Defensive Back Jaquiski Tartt made an interception and returned it for a touchdown which tied the game at 14. Although the defense played pretty solid ball so far in the game, the Bulldogs completely dominated the 4th quarter. Samford put up 17 straight points without a response coming until 2:45 was left in the game. Albert Wilson, who had a 150-yd+ receiving game, was responsible for the Panthers last touchdown to end the game 31-21 in favor of Samford

The stat of the night came from Fabian Truss of Samford, who played proficiently in all positions assigned. He rushed for 78 yards, had 16 yards receiving, 53 Punt Return yards and managed to rack up 149 Kickoff Return yards including a touchdown. Fans should be pleased by the 1st half of play by the Panthers. Their home-opener showed glimpses of what they could be when everyone’s clicking on all cylinders. GSU’s Ronnie Bell threw for 28 of 51 for 391 yards. with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions and was sacked only once. While throwing for almost 400 yards is great for a quarterback, it needs to be complimented by a good running attack. Gerald Howse was the top rusher with only 29 yards on the ground with Kelton Hill in 2nd with 28 yards. Hill was an important piece of their high flying passing attack with 5 receptions for 54 yards and 2 touchdowns. With almost 500 yards of total offense, Terrance Woodard anchored the defense with 10 tackles (8 unassisted). Theo Agnew and Joseph Peterson were also key players on defense with 6 unassisted tackles to help slow down Samford’s running game. They have a dual threat in Kelton Hill and Albert Wilson and Coach Miles will have plenty of opportunities this season to show the home fans that his acquirement was for good reason. The final score: Samford 31, Georgia State 21. With a résumé like his I’d expect great things to come!

Panama vs. Cuba
On July 20th the Georgia Dome had the honor of hosting 2 quarterfinal matches in the CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament; Panama vs. Cuba and Mexico vs. Trinidad & Tobago. Panama were heavy favorites in the first match as they beat highly-favored Mexico to open up the tournament. An interesting thing to note: for those that aren’t aware the Georgia Dome is the home of the Atlanta Falcons and artificial turf. But for this competition earlier last week grass was placed on top of the artificial surface, so it was interesting to see how it fared in 2 straight games. As the game began the sides were pretty even in play, but it was in the 21’(minute) that the Cuban side broke through with a goal. A beautiful cross by Jaime Colome found a sliding Jose Alfonso Cipriani. Unfortunately for the Cuban side, their celebrations were cut short as the referee gave Panama a penalty kick off of a bad Jorge Corrales foul inside the box. Gabriel Torres fired it home into the bottom corner to make it a 1-1 game for the Panamanians. Cuba had more than a few scares before halftime but Panama finally had another breakthrough in the 38’ when hot-footed Gabriel Torres made the game 2-1 for the Panamanian side. At halftime the game was 2-1, Panama, but as the 2nd half progressed things quickly spiraled out of control for Cuba. As Panama applied the pressure and upped their physicality to open the 2nd half, the Cuban side were doomed after Ariel Martinez was issued a red card. Martinez was carded after a high kick to Blas Perez of Panama who immediately fell to the ground in pain. It was clear that Cuba was shaken after that ejection, and never recovered afterwards. Being cut to 10 men for the final 32 minutes, Panama was able to score not 1, not 2, but 4 goals before it was all said and done. Carlos Rodriguez and Jairo Jimenez were credited with a goal apiece while Blas Perez was able to find superb form this game and put in 2 goals. To show just how aggressive Panama was in the 2nd half, they scored their 6th goal in the 87’! They never stopped applying the pressure and continued to make the Cuban side work throughout the entirety of the match into stoppage time. Although Cuba was down a player much praise has to be given to Panama for their play. If they were more accurate with their onslaught in the 2nd half the final score could have very well been 8 or 9 to 1. A deflated Cuban side gave their best but just couldn’t recover after the red card in the 58’. You could hear the large crowd of Panamanians with horns, flags, and songs cheering after every goal and celebrating after the victory. Some of the players, after leaving the pitch, walked to their fans in the stands and shook their hands, signing autographs too.
Mexico vs.Trinidad & Tobago
Finally, the time has come. The main event, the highlight of the night, the match with so much meaning to it. A win for Trinidad & Tobago would mean advancing further than they ever have in their country’s history in this tournament, and would undoubtedly be the biggest upset in the tournament. Mexican fans are so critical of their team that a win or a loss could bring about the same disdain. After a disappointing Confederations Cup performance it seemed like all the pressure in the world was on Mexican head coach Chepo de la Torre. The ideal situation for Mexico? A big win. A big win would equate to happiness for the team, calm for the fans, and an ease of pressure off the shoulders of de la Torre. Another reason why this game has so much riding on it and why it’s the highlight of this round. It was absolutely impossible to ignore the shift in the stadium. By around the 80’ of the first game, the Georgia Dome was slowly turning green (Mexican flag colors are red, white, and green). If you didn’t notice the influx of fans you weren’t watching the game. By the time El Tri came to the pitch for practice the entire stadium erupted in cheers. Flags, horns, vuvuzela’s, and costumes galore were in sight all around the Dome. Prior to the match, their head coach had these words to say: “We’re not forced to do anything, we are committed to achieve our goals, we work for it, sometimes we succeed, sometimes not, but we’re working on it.” At the start of the first half you could see flashes go off all over the Dome. It was a quiet first half to start. Mexico upped their pace while Trinidad & Tobago tried a more organized approach with their offense. The tide gradually changed and fouls were being called left and right. In fact, by the 25’ there were 9 fouls called on Mexico compared to Trinidad’s 2. That was the summary of the first half, fouls, fouls, fouls. Things got testy heading into halftime and with so much riding on the outcome of this game you could see why. After a scoreless first half you could tell the fans were thirsty for a goal. Mexico definitely dominated possession but had a mere 3 shots on goal. T&T didn’t fare any better with only 2 shots on goal. So after we all enjoyed a halftime performance by El Dasa we just knew it had to get better. In the 57’ Cornell Glen was tripped up by Carlos Pena and earned a free kick. The free kick was deflected and led to a corner which was unsuccessful as well. Tensions were still running high and led to double cautions in the 61’ to both Luis Montes (Mexico) and Keon Daniel (T&T). We’re inching closer towards the end of the 2nd half and the game was still goalless.
Mexico vs.Trinidad & Tobago
At the 72’ a bit of exciting news was announced; the official attendance for the days’ matches was 54,229. This is the largest crowd for a soccer match in the Georgia Dome’s history. This announcement got the crowd riled up and for the next 10 minutes, the cheering was constant. The game stepped up the excitement too as both teams had their chances but just fell short. Mexico’s captain Joel Hiqui, despite his size, was doing an excellent job in marking T&T’s giant striker Kenwyne Jones. At one point Jones took on 2 men right outside the 18-yard box but his shot attempt went out of bounds for a corner kick. Then on another drive to goal Jones took a header but it went just off-target. As we entered the 80th minute and having already used 2 substitutions, fatigue was starting to set in for the Soca Warriors (Trinidad). Hope came in late in the game in the 84’, when Raul Jimenez scored off of a low-cross by Miguel Layun (pictured above). Although it took a deflection it was good enough for Chepo’s side as it ended up being the only goal for the team and the game. 3 minutes of added time weren’t enough for the Soca Warriors as they ended up falling to El Tri 1-0. With a record attendance it was easy to see that Atlanta has been starving for a soccer tournament to make a stop within city limits. The Gold Cup was a good look for the city and an amazing experience for the 50,000+ that attended. No matter where you looked you could see children, families, couples, professionals, and soccer fans in general enjoying themselves. We hope CONCACAF makes a return to our great city where we can takeover the Dome once again!
