welcome
A message from Judy Shepard. Welcome to the first-ever Matthew Shepard Foundation Gay Ski Week at Crested Butte! You’re investing your time not only in a week of fantastic recreation in a beautiful corner of the Rocky Mountains, but also in a showcase for the community outreach and educational programming the Foundation has built over the last 13 years. We are so pleased to have the opportunity to share with you, and Crested Butte’s warmly welcoming community, the work we have done across the country to foster the inclusive, accepting future that our LGBT and Allied community is seeking to build. Ever since my son Matthew was murdered in an anti-gay hate crime in Laramie, Wyoming twelve years ago, I have been traveling around the country speaking to youth in high schools and colleges, helping them see and understand the terrible price our society pays for hatred and bias. Hate is something that is learned, and something can be unlearned, too. That’s the core of our mission. By joining us here, we hope you’ll become more familiar with the resources and programs we provide to help everyone unlearn hate, fear, and bias. Your voice is the most powerful tool you have in erasing
hate. Don’t ever forget that your pride, your dignity, and your personal example inspire those around you in ways you may not even realize. When the week is over, and you’re back in your community, I hope you’ll call on the Matthew Shepard Foundation’s resources and staff if we can help you in your future efforts. Let us know how you’d like to be involved. And in the meantime --- enjoy the slopes. All my best,
Judy Shepard President, Board of Directors Matthew Shepard Foundation

This route operates every 15 minutes and it is a six to seven minute ride from Mt. Crested Butte to the Fourway Stop in Crested Butte. The bus stops are conveniently located throughout the Town of Crested Butte. The first stop is the “Four-way Stop” located at the eastern end of the Elk Avenue Shopping district. The “Old Town Hall” is four blocks west on Elk avenue. The other main stops include the “Nordic Center” and “6th & Belleview” where the grocery store is located.
10 | c r e s ted butte g a y ski wee k 2011

REACHING BEYOND: THE MATTHEW SHEPARD FOUNDATION
Matthew Shepard
In
the back seats of the town shuttle, a gaggle of gnarly local hill shredders in their young 20s are obviously enjoying the libations of the night, and although they’re usually love and peace oriented, they’re flinging the pejorative “fag” around. The bus driver turns on the lights and yells back, “Any four letter word is pretty much acceptable on my bus, but I will not tolerate hate and bigotry. Think about what you’re saying.”
50 | cr e s ted butte g a y ski wee k 2011
The back discussion picks up louder in a more heated debate amongst themselves and as the dozen disembark each one apologizes for not realizing how offensive their words were. When words and names infiltrate language and become commonplace as demeaning hip, slang terms it only serves to further intolerance of others’ differences. And that is not hip and it serves no one.
Reaching beyond Replacing
hate with understanding, compassion and acceptance is the mission of the Matthew Shepard Foundation. Matthew Shepard’s parents, Dennis and Judy, founded the Matthew Shepard Foundation (MSF) to honor their son in a manner that was appropriate to his dreams, beliefs and aspirations. Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered in a horrific gay hate crime in Wyoming in 1998. It sent a collective shudder through the nation and a message that more education and awareness was needed to combat the ignorance and misinterpretation surrounding gay life and how hate affects everyone. The Matthew Shepard Foundation has filled this void through its varied educational, outreach and advocacy programs and by continuing to tell Matthew’s story. The foundation’s executive director, Jason Marsden, explains that a seed was planted from hate to blossom into their goals. Judy Shepard travels across North America and abroad speaking to audiences in public and private high schools, colleges and work diversity programs about the effect of Matthew’s murder on their family and community. She speaks of the impact of violence from the perspective of a victim and the damage hatred does to society. The damage reaches deeply
into the lives of all, not only through the crime itself but through things like discrimination—employers able to fire employees solely because of their sexual preferences and the impact of people having to live their lives in a closet. “[Judy Shepard] makes people understand the impact of hatred, not just on the victims but on themselves,” Jason points out. “Those guys who killed Matthew were very young. One has a child. They’re in prison and that child is growing up without a father. Matthew not only lost his life; they lost theirs as well. People don’t think of all the repercussions, the broad effect that hate has.” Through the Shepards’ and the foundation’s work, the Matthew Shepard Act was signed into effect adding lesbian/gay/bisexual/ transgender (LGBT) to the protected federal hate crime law in 2009 so violence against someone based on their sexual preference is treated like other hate crimes, like those against race or religion. The MSF has an extensive outreach program through traveling discussions and speaking and through their website matthewsplace.com, which has a variety of useful information— interviews with prominent LGBT professionals, entertainment stars and notables and how to pursue a successful career.

In Gunnison, the LGBT organization is
Spectrum on the Western State College campus. Devin Rousch of the local organization says, “Basically our mission is to provide WSC with a message of equality on campus and within the Gunnison community and to make people aware that we’re just like everybody else.” Today there are more outlets for young gays to come out, but Devin feels, “It’s still gonna be a hard process to come out because there’s still all these social stigmas associated with being gay. You hear it all the time... phrases like ‘that’s so gay,’ or ‘faggy’ as a derogative adjective that has nothing to do with sexual preference. It’s just a social phrase. We as a society have to question why we’re teaching our kids things like this.” Both the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Spectrum are working to counter the societal negatives through their outreach and awareness programs. Jason notes, “We see evidence that it’s easier for kids to come out, although it also depends on what part of the country they’re from or if their family comes from less accepting religious backgrounds. In general, we see kids are confident enough in their identity be open enough to come out.” And the willingness of this valley to be open and welcoming to all is what initially attracted the MSF to hold its annual Gay Ski Week here. Jason says that when Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) approached the MSF to hold Gay Ski Week in Crested Butte, the foundation looked at the 52 | cr e s ted butte g a y ski wee k 2011
town and felt our community showcased itself as open. “I think Crested Butte offers a loving environment that handles diversity in positive way and others can learn about what this community does right in handling diversity. We can use Crested Butte as a example of how to do that,” Jason says. He feels that Crested Butte makes everyone feel welcome and, “It comes from everyone who lives here. Using your voice to stand up for negative things that are said sets a good example. We can pass that along to other communities to learn from. That’s an exciting part about coming up to Crested Butte and we can form our future programs from it as well.” Gay Ski Week is March 19 through March 26 and will encompass a few of Crested Butte’s most cherished costumed local events like the Al Johnson Uphill Downhill Telemark race and KBUT’s Soul Train Night. The MSF is hoping the week turns into one of their signature fundraising events in one of the most beautiful locations in the country. Since his death, Matthew’s legacy has challenged and inspired millions of people of all sexual persuasions, religions and races to erase hate in all its forms and actively stand up and speak out against ignorance, intolerance and outright homophobic hatred. With education, awareness, understanding and compassion we can reach even further to embrace all of humanity. Dawne Belloise is a freelance writer, photographer, traveler and musician living in a small cottage with a large cat on an alley at the end of the road in Crested Butte’s paradise. THE laramie project by Dawne Belloise
As part of and in conjunction with the Matthew Shepard Foundation and Gay Ski Week, Western State College will present The Laramie Project and The Laramie Project, Ten Years Later.
The staged reading of the plays unfolds the story and aftermath of Matthew Shepard’s murder and then revisits the issue a decade later. The play is based on interviews conducted by Moisés Kaufman and fellow members of the Tectonic Theater Project, who met with family, friends, the community of Laramie and later, the convicted killers. The plays are directed by Karin Waidley, associate professor of communication and theatre at Western State College of Colorado and Thomas B. Howard, Jr., programs director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
The first play tells the story of Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming, who was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie. He was not discovered until the next day. He died several days later in a Fort Collins hospital. The play is an emotionally moving collage that explores the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable. The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later revisits The Laramie Project in 2008 as five members of Tectonic returned to the city to try to understand the long-term effects of the murder. They found a town wrestling with its legacy and its place in history. In addition to revisiting the people whose interviews are included in the original play, the company also spoke with the two killers, McKinney and Henderson, as well as Matthew’s mother, Judy Shepard. Ten Years After seeks to answer the question, “How does society write its own history?” The Laramie Project’s staged reading will be Tuesday, March 22 at the Mallardi Cabaret at 7:30 p.m., with tickets priced at $10. The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later’s reading will be Wednesday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lodge at Mountaineer Square, with $10 tickets. All proceeds will benefit the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
