Monday Night Block Party on Elk, August 20 Time to get psyched up for the USA Pro Challenge to race to Mt. Crested Butte from Montrose on August 21 for Stage 2 of the seven-day stage race. The night before, Monday, August 20, there will be a Block Party on the streets of downtown Crested Butte. Elk Avenue will be closed between 2nd and 3rd Streets, featuring live music and libations available for purchase. The jumbotron will be playing clips from last year’s race, to recall the excitement that took place last year in Colorado and get ready to watch it all unfold again in 2012 USA Pro Challenge. LightMyBike.com Crested Butte Townie Crit and Cruiser Ride, August 21 As if riding a townie through Crested Butte isn’t enjoyable enough, now cycling enthusiasts can ride laps around town in a criterium-style race emulating the loop that the pro-racers will sprint later that afternoon (except for a brief detour through the Talk of the Town bar to add a little excitement and hilarious spectating opportunities). The Bamberg Memorial Townie Crit has a $10 entry fee and gets you two beer tickets. There is a Men’s and Women’s Division with plenty of prizes and swag. That starts at noon. Kids races will take place between races and an awards ceremony and party kicks off at 1 o’clock. USA Pro Challenge Finish Festival, August 21 The finish always sees some of the hottest action when it comes to stage racing, so why not throw a big party around it all? From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. next to the Stage 2 Finish Line in Mt. Crested Butte there will be a festival, complete with live music, dancing, a beer garden, local vendors and a jumbotron to watch the racers as the excitement from Stage 2 unfolds between Montrose and Mt. Crested Butte, passing along the Blue Mesa Reservoir, through Gunnison, up the East River Valley, with a sprint line in downtown Crested Butte to the finish in Mt. Crested Butte. In the Finish Festival, the
youngest of bikers will also have a chance to race in the Strider Cup and enjoy some other bicycle-focused fun in the Kids Zone, making it the perfect place for families to show their enthusiasm for this awesome sport. Cottonwood Pass King of the Mountain, August 22 Stage 3 is also known as the “Queen Stage” of the USA Pro Challenge, with two mountain passes, both exceeding elevations above 12,000 feet. Racers climb 13 miles of dirt road to crest 12,162 feet above sea level at top of Cottonwood Pass; the highest point of the entire USA Pro Challenge race. Altitudes of this height are rarely reached by any of these professional cyclists, making the brutal ascent and fast decent one of the best throughout the entire race. To witness the excitement, cycling fans from around the world can catch a shuttle from Taylor Park or ride their bicycles to the top of Cottonwood Pass to witness racers battling for the first, of two, King of the Mountain points of the day in the Queen Stage of the seven-day stage race.

Monday, August 20 Western State Colorado University Citizen’s Race & Fun Lap: Local cycling legends have revived the circuit format in Gunnison. Sign up for the Fun Lap to ride where the pros will blaze through the following day. Women’s and Men’s Open categories (16-29 years, 30-49 years, 50+ years) also will follow the USA Pro Cycling Challenge Stage 2 course. Women ride 30 minutes + 1 lap and men ride 45 minutes + 1 lap. Each field is limited to 50 riders. Wheels roll from Escalante Hill at 5 p.m., and stick around for the chalking party afterwards. Register at www.bikereg.com by searching for Fun Lap. VO2 Max Testing: Western State Colorado University’s High Altitude Performance Laboratory will offer this test to race fans on a limited basis on Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help maximize training and performance. The cost is $50. Reservations are required by calling (970) 275-3516. Tuesday, August 21 VO2 Max Testing: Also available on Tuesday. See above information. Queen’s Court Cycling Festival: It’s a full day of fun, food and entertainment from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Follow the race from the start in Montrose, inbound into Gunnison and all the way to the Mt. Crested Butte finish on the jumbo-tron. Watch live as racers zoom past the festival 10 a.m. Festival opens.
11 a.m. Iron Wrench. The best bike mechanics duke it out in Cycling Stadium, at Virginia Avenue and Main Street. Each crew receives a box of parts and a frame, plus access to the parts “pantry.” The challenge: build a rolling bike within two hours. Crowd applause will choose the winner. Noon to 8 p.m. Kids’ Zone with bounce houses, bike booth and snacks. 1:45 p.m. Approximate time peloton races through town. 1:45 p.m. Townie Chase. World Townie Champions, crowned at the local 24 Hours in the Sage on August 19, will chase the peloton and determine who’s really King. 4:30 p.m. Live music from Chris Daniels & The Kings. 7 p.m. Crested Butte Film Festival presents Cycling Under the Stars with short biking films and the feature film Chasing Legends. Wednesday, August 22 Queen’s Court Start Festival: Come early to get up close and personal with riders and their teams as they prepare to launch from Gunnison for the Queen Stage, the toughest day of the race. Stay and watch the peloton all the way to the Aspen finish on the jumbo-tron located at IOOF Park. 5 a.m. Live TV coverage from Denver’s Channel 9/ KUSA begins. Make your “I Love Gregg Moss/Susie Wargin” sign and come wave “Hi Mom!” 8 a.m. Festival & Kids’ Zone opens (Kids’ Zone open until 1 p.m.). 9 a.m. Autograph Alley opens. 10 a.m. Queen Stage Start, Main Street, Downtown.
10:15 a.m. Bike Parade & Races: Register for races for all ages at the Kids Zone bike booth on Tuesday or before the Queen Stage start. All racers will parade from IOOF Park to the start line. The fee per seat is $10, which will be donated back to the Gunnison School District Athletics Program for coaching staff and travel costs. Join an informal group in Taylor Park on Wednesday morning for a community bike ride to the top of Cottonwood Pass. Bring your bike, your costume and your warm clothes, and plan to depart Taylor Park at 7:30 a.m.

PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION All cars should park at the Crested Butte Community School, as you enter town. Mountain Express will be running a revised route all day on Race Day. BUS SCHEDULE Buses run from the Community School Parking Lot to Mt. Crested Butte, every 10 to 20 minutes with stops along the way. Revised schedule will take place from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

BIKE VALET There will be a bike valet as you enter the Finish Festival Area for those interested in biking up to Mt. Crested Butte on the Rec Path. Avoid the hassle of road closures, be on your own schedule and get a beautiful and easy ride up to Mt. Crested Butte. Bike Valet is $2 per person. There will be a full staff to ensure security of your bicycle and the accessibility to the finish festival makes the Bike Valet very convenient.

away specialists. Then the cyclists visit familiar territory with a Sprint Line in Gunnison, a second Sprint Line in Crested Butte, and a nasty two-mile climb to the dramatic finish on Mt. Crested Butte, which proved an exciting moment in 2011. After heading gradually uphill most of the day, cyclists and their fans will witness all the excitement of a huge alpine climb packed into four minutes, with the promising roar of the Crested Butte crowd at the finish.
Mountain Express Town Shuttle will experience route diversions and unknown schedule delays on Monday and Tuesday, August 20 and 21 due to the 2012 Pro Cycling Challenge. Mountain Express is working with officials from the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte as well as the local Pro Cycling committee to offer the best possible service during the event. They will update the website at www.mtnexp.org as details become available. The main thing to know is that the Town Shuttle will be running in full force to get people to Mt. Crested Butte for the festivities. People are strongly encouraged to take the bus, since public parking in Mt. Crested Butte will be in low supply. Public parking in Crested Butte will be available at the Crested Butte Community School and the streets on the east side of 6th Street. Monday, August 20 Town of Crested Butte: The Town Shuttle will not be affected in Crested Butte. Town of Mt. Crested Butte: The Town Shuttle will not access Three Seasons/Outrun, Chateaux or Marcellina all day. The Town Shuttle will leave Mountaineer Square and head straight for Pitchfork, where it will arrive and depart early, at an estimated :02, :22 and :42 past the hour. Tuesday, August 21 Town of Crested Butte: The Town Shuttle will not serve any of the downtown stops (Old Town Hall, the Nordic Center and Whiterock Avenue). It will head into Crested Butte with stops at Teocalli, the Four-way Stop and a temporary location at the northwest corner of 6th and Belleview, one block east of the normal 6th and Belleview stop. Starting at 9 a.m., the Town Shuttle will begin servicing the free parking lot at the Crested Butte Community School at 8th and Red Lady Avenue. It will head north on 8th then swing through the Four-way Stop and Teocalli on its way to Mt. Crested Butte. Town of Mt. Crested Butte: In addition to the closures listed above, the Town Shuttle will not serve Hunter Hill/Snowmass Road (Wood Creek/Mountain Edge and The Plaza). It will stop at Crystal and Castle if safe for passengers and other travelers on the road. This will be the driver’s decision. Please respect his or her judgment. At approximately 2 p.m. or when race officials give notice, Gothic Road will close and the Town Shuttle will cease operations as the race approaches. The buses will park at their designated spots until given notice that they can travel again. Regular service will begin at all stops when officials notify Mountain Express. Tuesday, August 21: Known and expected delays —Highway 50 eastbound from Montrose will be interrupted from approximately 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Westbound traffic will also be delayed for up to two hours during this time. —Traffic on Highway 135 will be stopped between Gunnison and Crested Butte (both north and southbound) beginning approximately 2 p.m. and continuing until 4:30 p.m. or later. —Road closures within the town of Crested Butte affecting Elk Avenue, Whiterock, 1st , 2nd, 5th and the alley between 2nd and 3rd will begin at 6 a.m. the morning of August 21, and continue until approximately 4:30 p.m.
Downtown road closures (all times are estimates) —Elk Avenue (1st to 6th Streets) 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. —Whiterock Avenue (2nd to 5th Streets) 10:45 a.m. —Gothic Road to and from Mt. Crested Butte, 2 p.m. —All roads in and around Crested Butte/Mt Crested Butte will re-open around 4:30 p.m. —Gothic Road between Snowmass and Treasury will experience delays and detours from 5 a.m. throughout the entire day. —Gothic Road between Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte will be closed to all traffic beginning approximately 2 p.m. and continuing for at least two hours, and potentially longer.
—Cottonwood Pass from Taylor Park to the Pass will be closed to all traffic at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21. Wednesday, August 22: Known and expected delays —Highway 135 from Almont to Gunnison will be closed beginning approximately 9:30 a.m. continuing through 11:30 a.m. —County Road 742 (Taylor River Canyon) will be closed to all traffic at 8:30 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. —Cottonwood Pass from Taylor Park to the summit will be closed all day until approximately 3 p.m. —Spectators will likely be leaving town via all exiting roads.

Ride the historic Pearl Pass Route over to Aspen to watch the Stage 3 Finish in downtown Aspen on Wednesday, August 22. The ride, guided by Crested Butte Mountain Guides, will depart downtown Crested Butte at 6 a.m. It’s a 38-mile one-way ride for mountain bikes only with an estimated ride time of 5 to 8
hours. The cost of event entry is $150 per person, which includes shuttle service for personal gear to Aspen, guides along the way and vehicle support as high as Cumberland Basin. Go to www.crestedbutteguides.com for more information.
Downtown sprint line To see racers make 90 degree turns at speeds well over 25 mph, check out the action downtown. After coming up Highway 135, racers will take a left turn onto Whiterock Avenue then turn right onto 1st Street. They will then turn right onto Elk Avenue where they are met with the downtown sprint point, in front of the Brick Oven Pizzeria and Maxwell’s. There will be a Sprint Line festival, with a jumbotron and New Belgium Beer Garden. Racers will then take a left back onto 6th Street and ascend the final hill up to Mt. Crested Butte to the finish line.

Finish line/Festival The finish is always a huge place of anticipation and some of the hottest action when it comes to stage racing, so why not throw a big party around it all? The USA Pro Challenge Finish Festival at Mt. Crested Butte will host a huge party scene including live entertainment, New Belgium beer, jumbotrons, and lots of race hype from tour sponsors including the Radio Shack Tour Tracker, Jelly Belly, 2012 Tour gear from Pearl Izumi. Some of your favorite local vendors are also on hand including CS Irwin, Colorado FreeSkier, Mountain Flyer, Crested Butte Mountain Guides, Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, Third Bowl Ice Cream, The Sherpa Café, Mulay’s Sausage, West End Pub and Cowabunga Creamery out of Paonia! The festival is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will be the location for the up-close and personal awards ceremony immediately following the finish. The Crested Butte Dance Collective will amaze with their talented aerialists performing at noon, 12:45, 1:15 and 2 p.m. Their stilt walkers can be seen from afar around the Kids Zone at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. Don’t miss them— the sets will be prompt and concise. Cannondale Sprints and Maxxis Stunt Shows will also be taking place in the Finish Festival area between 2 and 3 p.m. The Kids Zone once again features some exciting hands-on art projects from the creative minds at the Trailhead Children’s Museum and The Studio, including bicycle spin

Angels take the music stage promptly after the awards ceremony around 4 p.m. and will keep rocking through until the end of the Festival at 6 p.m. VIP/Founders’ Box tickets for sale on race day VIP tickets will still be available for purchase for $250 each on Tuesday at the Will Call Booth in Mt. Crested Butte. Located on the map, the Will Call Booth will be located at the top of the stairs by the Chateaux Condominiums, which is also the entrance to the Founders’ Booth Area.
