STUDENTS LACK INTEREST, NOT KNOWLEDGE!
STCESSC studes lack interest in Math, Science, English by gab.thejourno
recent survey conducted by The Pen has revealed a startling lack of interest in core subjects among Grade 6 students at Sto. Tomas Central Elementary School SPED Center (STCESSC).
MATH: An Intimidation A staggering 53% of the participants expressed their dislike for Math, making it the most unpopular subject among the students. This finding aligns with the global trend where Math is often perceived as challenging and intimidating by students.
These findings raise concerns about the students’ attitudes towards these fundamental subjects, which form the bedrock of most higher education courses and are crucial for numerous career paths.
The survey, which involved 100 students, aimed to identify the “Most Hated” subjects. The results were, as The Pen described, “devastating”.
Science was the second most disliked subject, with 24% of the students expressing their aversion towards it. The rest of the participants, accounting for 23%, identified English as their least favorite subject.
The local findings echo the global trends highlighted in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 results.
The PISA results indicated a decline in performance levels across OECD countries, with mean performance in mathematics falling by a record 15 points, and reading falling 10 points. The STCESSC survey results, therefore, are not an isolated phenomenon but part of a larger, global trend. This underscores the need for a comprehensive approach to address these issues, learning from the policies and practices applied in other countries.

Did you know that in Japanese mythology, a giant catfish called Namazu is responsible for earthquakes? It’s believed that when Namazu thrashes about, it causes the ground to shake. This is just one of the many ways different cultures around the world have tried to explain the mysterious and often devastating phenomenon of earthquakes. Fascinating, isn’t it?

tp opinion SAFETY AND SECURITY
RISKED: SCHOOL’S SAFETY AND SECURITY Statistics says school is among the safest place as a second home for our children and ensure that kids are safe and feel safe at school but few parents send their children off without at least some worry that harm could come to them. Their sense of urgency about keeping their children safe at school is just renewed when tragedy happened. The school focused on addressing school safety issues and finding real, actionable solutions is a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning. Threats to the safety and security of children, people and property can arise from natural hazards for example earthquake, floods and storms or from human actions such as vandalism, arson, and violent crime. While catastrophic events and human tragedies cannot be eliminated entirely. There is a role for every one of us especially facility designers, institutional managers, emergency response teams, and post-crisis intervention in mitigating their negative impact.
Several guidelines to ensure school’s safety and security should be implemented and People are stepping up and getting involved, which can help ease any anxiety that people can have in the aftermath of school tragedies. Guidelines should include conducting safety and security audits of school premises and employees from the respective local police station. Installing CCTV cameras at all vulnerable points in the school premises and ensuring it is functional at all times. Conducting psychometric evaluation of all staff employees including the non-teaching staff. Constituting parent teacherstudents committee to address security and safety needs of students and taking regular feedback from parents as well. Monitoring access to school buildings by outsiders and visitors. Providing training and development to staff to protect children from any form of abuse. Overall, responsibility for the safety of children in school shall solely lie with the school authorities.

Overall, responsibility for the safety of children in school shall solely lie with the school authorities. If I am a parent of any child who is hurt in school, I will never accept any excuse or alibi for any accident or crime committed inside the campus. Understanding how the environment affects student learning and factors that define a safe school is important, such as how the school is responds to a crisis and the emotional support programs that are in place. Many families have found that choosing a quality, virtual public school where their child can learn from safety and security of their own home is the right answer for the child.

Victims of bullying endure serious, longterm trauma, experiencing sadness, depression, loss of interest in activities, and fear of speaking out. These painful experiences leave lasting impressions, often resulting in a heart filled with resentment as they grow up. Interestingly, students who bully are often grappling with their own issues. They may be attempting to compensate for a lack of attention, power, or love in their own lives.
Sometimes, it feels easier to remain silent than to express feelings, especially when others can hear but fail to understand. It’s crucial for parents to lend an ear to their children’s problems and provide ample support to alleviate their distress. Persistent bullies often seek to dominate others and elevate their own social status. This behavior often stems from a misguided belief that such actions are acceptable. At times, they may not even recognize their actions as bullying or comprehend the extent of hurt and anxiety they inflict.

Care to Breathe? Care to Breathe. by Mhieflor Dane Capunong
Everything around that regulates life, meet, live, and breathe. It is one of the essential basic requirements to live and sustain, it matters a lot because it is the only home that everyone can survive. It is what we depend on and rely on to prolong the lives of every individual to ensure, maintain, and preserve its function. On January 26, 2001, a law was implemented which is known as the Republic Act 9003, the Act of "Ecological Solid Waste Management Program" and is related to the Republic Act 8749 in the year 1999, "Philippines' Clean Air". The RA 9003 was implemented to create and protect the environment and the people of the community by setting the proper guidelines for waste segregation to be minimized and controlled. It was created for the Institutional Mechanisms and Incentives declaring certain Acts prohibited and providing penalties to those who did not obey the law. The Government Agency that is responsible for this Law is called the Municipal Environment and Natural Resource Office or the MENRO. Its function is to provide extension services information, education campaign as well as compliance with the existing laws.
7thepen
It shall take charge of managing, preserving, and protecting the environment and natural resources as well. The Office will develop plans and strategies to ensure the sustainability of the environment. MENRO is responsible one to educating all constituents including schools and barangays. Some organizations can be a satellite of MENRO like the school organization known as the " Youth for Environment in School Organization or "YES O" for training about the program especially in taking care of our environment. This organization was established to serve significance for students' actions and movements towards protecting and conserving the environment. The aims and goals of YES O are to provide youth opportunities for meaningful involvement in preventing violence and create community change to enhance each ability. MENRO and YES O were related in their duties and responsibilities. These two (2) organizations aim the same for the betterment of our community as well as in our school environment. Their main goal is about Ecological and Solid waste management which needs full attention in implementing this law. According to the RA 9003, the ESWMP has the most important role in MENRO. ESWM has major activities such as the Segregation of wastes and the 5Rs of waste management. The segregation of wastes composed of Special waste - sanitary napkins and diapers, fluorescent tubes and bulbs, injections and any infectious materials, and rubberized materials; Residual waste - wastes that are recyclable, reduced, and reusable like plastics, cellophane, bottles, fabrics, and used clothing;
Compostable wastes, which can be a soil fertilizer and everyone is encouraged to do composting at home and in school. Those are the waste segregations, another is the 5Rs. " Reduce, everyone can reduce waste by turning it into reusable materials"; "Reuse, wastes that are useful and can be reduced"; "Recycled, we can use it as improvised decoration materials"; Repair, every reusable and recycled waste can be repaired and turned it into cash and can beautify our surroundings"; lastly " Recover, we can do some business using these 5Rs." Those are the major activities of the ESWMP. These activities have been introduced to our School by the YES- O and also implemented and approved by our School Principal Dr. Jocelyn-Caspillo Cadiente and of every teacher in this Institution. And we, are proud that we follow and do what is best for our school and community. We segregate our wastes and do the 5Rs, we plant trees to help our environment become habitable and beautiful. Finally, our environment and community as a whole are safe, even though we face many challenges today compared to before still we stand firm and make our environment safe for our future. Reuse our today to Reduce our tomorrow. Therefore, we as constituents of this community, will obey and make our surroundings clean, beautiful, and healthy for living because we do believe that "CLEANLINESS is next to GODLINESS."

Aim High, Achieve Success!
Artificial Intelligence or as we call AI is a method of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like the human mind. And it refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that would typically require human intelligence.
To cultivate a new generation of skilled and compassionate journalists, the Sto.Tomas Central Elem. School SPED Center. Successfully joined the District Schools Press Conference last November 2023 held at Sto. Tomas National High School. This program aims to equip participating learners from elementary and secondary students with essential skills and passion for this craft.
But let me ask why is Artificial Intelligence is important? Artificial intelligence or AI is important because it involves creating machines and software that can simulate human cognitive abilities, such as learning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding and many more
This event allows the students to learn from experienced professionals who shown knowledge and expertise in the field of journalism. Throughout the program, participants are exposed to any field that serves as a medium material in writing and journal skills.
AI can be categorized into two types: Narrow AI and General AI. Narrow AI also known as weak AI, is designed to perform specific tasks, such as speech recognition, Image recognition, or playing chess. And General AI, is also known as strong AI systems that have the ability to understand, learn, and apply their intelligence across a wide range of tasks, similar to human intelligence.
Young minds give their best and show their dedication to leave a remarkable challenge on their event of expertise.
AI has revolutionized various industries and fields, including health care, finance, transportation, customer service, and many more. Some applications of AI include virtual assistants, autonomous vehicles, personalized recommendations and other more technology stuff.
Journalism is an integral part of our learners engagement specially in achieving success. Committed and dedicated writers of this generation are proud of our school for a future that goes beyond academics. Finally, with collective efforts and dedication we, the journalists of our school will shape our future with truth integrity, and heartfelt success. I want every one of us will JUMP- Journalism, Upskilling, and Monitoring Programs High and firm our commitment to empowering schools' future journalists.
AI technologies and techniques include natural language processing, machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and expert systems. These technologies enable AI systems to analyze large amounts of data and recognize patterns, make decisions, and continuously improve their performance through learning. While AI has made significant advancements, it is still a rapidly evolving field with ongoing research and development. The goal of AI is to create intelligent machines that can perform tasks autonomously and make decisions based on data and reasoning.

Being engaged in sports we can engaged with others, but when I discover myself loving sports, it helps me making new set of friends and communicate well. However, the negative impact of gadgets affects psychological development, especially aspects of emotional growth and moral development. Lastly, sports boosts up your muscles improves blood flow role and the benefits are endless. While too much gadgets can lead you into health destruction that can decreased your positivity in life .

GOOD SLEEP LEADS TO HEALTHY LIFE by Lord's Will Dawn A. Digal
Medical professionals often ask their patients about their sleep habits during check-up sessions. Questions such as "How long do you sleep?" and "What time do you sleep?" are common. These inquiries are not made out of idle curiosity; they are crucial for understanding a patient's overall health. Sleep is not merely a period of rest or downtime. It is a vital process that helps a person regain energy after a day filled with various activities or work. The quality, timing, and duration of sleep are all important factors that contribute to one's well-being. Sleep plays a pivotal role in maintaining good health and well-being throughout life. It is not just about getting enough sleep, but also about sleeping at the right times. This is known as good sleep hygiene. Sleep benefits mental health in several ways. It aids in memory consolidation, which is the process of storing new information for later recall. This is particularly important for students, as it enhances their learning capabilities. In addition to improving memory, sleep also enhances problemsolving and creative thinking skills. These cognitive functions are essential for academic success and personal development. Therefore, students who get adequate sleep often perform better in school. Sleep also has a significant impact on physical health. It helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that regulate feelings of hunger and fullness. This means that sleep can indirectly influence our dietary choices and, by extension, our physical health.

Moreover, sleep supports growth and development. During deep sleep, the body releases hormones that promote growth, increase muscle mass, and repair cells and tissues. This is especially important for children and teenagers. Good sleep can also enhance concentration, productivity, and performance. For student-athletes, maintaining stable sleeping patterns can lead to improvements in speed, accuracy, and overall mental well-being. Sleep also plays a role in immune function. Adequate sleep can strengthen the body's defenses, making it easier to fight off common illnesses like colds, coughs, and fevers. Beyond its physical benefits, sleep is also a form of relaxation. Our bodies and minds need this time to unwind and relieve the stress and anxiety brought on by various factors in our lives. It is essential to give oneself time to relax through sleep. This is not just about physical rest, but also about mental and emotional restoration. By ensuring we get enough quality sleep, we are taking a significant step towards selfcare. In conclusion, sleep is a fundamental aspect of good health. It is not just about the quantity but also the quality and timing of sleep. To maintain good health, one must also have good sleep. This is a fact that we should all remember and respect.

Proper training, good techniques, nice tactics and good moves make this amateur chess player Arth Elyzion L, Corpuz bags the gold in all the events from school meet, district meet and municipal meet and he will represent the municipal on the upcoming DAVRAA on February 1418 this year. Attacking her opponent without any intimidation is the first defense of our newbie in Chess, making his more aggressive and not afraid of her moves, and being confident in himself made his win the game. At first she thought her opponent could outsmart her but after several moves she became confident for the winning moment. In the second game, her opponent was very careful with her moves but Corpuz outwit his and won by pawn grabbing and letting the queen move it. In the third game, Corpuz used his tactics of catching all the minor pieces while shielding valuable pieces from attack which made him win again for this match. In the last and final game, he became very attentive because a wrong move will ruin everything and will cause to move away from the coveted title he is aiming for, and at last after so much effort and mind blowing attack, the winner was announced for a job well done. Thunderous claps and loud yells from the audience were heard over the place. “Constant practice makes perfect, that’s the way I trained him. If you have the goal to go in the higher meet, you will spent your time and effort just to achieve your dreams’’, Coach Ricardo Nadura said. “I hired and paid a chess master just to test his ability for the additional knowledge, techniques,” Nadura added.
