(TNS) Cats are starting to substitute Dad’s favorite recliner for scratching posts.

Morris: Cats need safer, healthier alternatives to scratching furniture JOAN MORRIS TNS Mercury News

DEAR JOAN: When our cat, Mau, adopted us, we were living in a small house with a door to close off the living room. When we moved to a house with no door to protect the furniture, we bought a tall scratching post covered in carpeting and with three platforms, hoping this would keep him away from the furniture. During the move, we locked him in the bathroom with his litter box to keep him out of the way. That evening we kept a close watch on him while we were watching TV. The first time he put his paws up on the sofa, obviously intending to scratch, I pounced on him. I said "No! Leave the furniture alone." Then I carried him to the scratching post, placed his paws on the post and said, in soothing tones, "This is your place, you can scratch all you want." He looked at me over his shoulder as I let go and moved away. Then he did a couple of scratches, looked back again, then bounded to the top perch, hanging on with his claws, then looked again to assess my reaction. Problem solved. He loved his

perch post and never scratched any of the furniture. Bob van Duinen, Walnut Creek, Calif. DEAR BOB: Who says cats can't be trained? Not me. You did exactly the right thing in teaching Mau that he needed to use his scratching post, which seems like a lot more fun than any couch. When trying to convince cats not to scratch the furnishings, first make sure the scratching post is the right size. Those small, stubby ones you can pick up anywhere for a few bucks might not be large enough for bigger cats. Cats like to stretch out as they scratch, and those don't give them much space to do that. The wrong size post also can tip over, which can startle the cat and make it wary of trying again. The material also matters. Some cats like the feel of carpeting between their toes, and others like the coarse feel of sisal. A scratching post that has both is ideal. To get the ball rolling, rub the scratching post down with catnip. Most cats go crazy for catnip and they'll start using the post just to get that contact high. Until your cat has started regularly using the post, keep

an eye on it and stop unwanted scratching on the furniture with a stern word and by moving the cat over to the post. DEAR JOAN: My sister has some holes in her lawn without any mounds of dirt around them. Got any ideas? Mike Gordon, Walnut Creek, Calif. DEAR MIKE: Lots. Many creatures dig small holes in lawns and other irrigated areas. The list includes meadow mice (which are also known as voles), moles, insects and snakes. I suspect voles. You'd likely see tunnels and furrows in the grass connecting the holes. Tell your sister she can dig up the hole for clues. DEAR JOAN: I have been feeding crows for about a year now. Well, I think I am. How can I make sure they are getting the meat scraps that I put out and not other animals? Naomi Fisher, Bay Area DEAR NAOMI: Feed your crows at the same time each day – morning and early evening – so they will come to expect it. Then remove what's left over, because you most certainly will attract other animals.

(TNS) Bernie Sanders leads vice president Joe Biden and New York City mayor Michael Bloomburg in the new California primary. One reason for his major climb was a strong campaign rally in Richmond (above).

New California primary shows Sanders leading MICHAEL FINNEGAN TNS Los Angeles Times Bernie Sanders is leading in California's Democratic presidential primary, as Latinos and younger voters rally behind the Vermont senator, according to a Monmouth University poll released Thursday. The survey of likely voters in the March 3 primary is consistent with other recent polls showing Sanders favored to win the biggest of 14 states holding contests on Super Tuesday. The Monmouth poll found 24 percent supported Sanders. Former Vice President Joe Biden was in second place with 17 percent, followed by former New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg with 13 percent; Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren with 10 percent; Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., 9 percent; San Francisco hedge-fund billionaire Tom Steyer, 5 percent; Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, 4 percent; and Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, 2 percent, the poll found. Most of the candidates could have trouble winning any of the 415 delegates at stake in California's primary. Under party rules, candidates don't get any delegates unless they win at least 15 percent of the vote statewide or in a congressional district. It takes 1,991 delegates to win the party's presidential nomination. "As the poll currently stands, it's possible that only two or three candidates reach viability in any given congressional district," said

Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute in New Jersey. "That would enable Sanders to rack up half the delegates or more while only earning one-quarter of the total vote." The dynamics of the race remain fluid. More than a third of the likely voters who had already decided on a candidate said there was at least some chance they would change their minds, and another 13 percent were still undecided, the poll found. Among likely voters younger than 50, Sanders led with 36 percent, and 38 percent of Latinos favored Sanders. Should some of the lower-tier candidates drop out of the race before March 3, the poll suggests support for Sanders would increase. In head-to-head matchups, likely California primary voters favor him over Biden, 44 percent to 36 percent; Bloomberg, 48 percent to 31 percent; and Buttigieg, 51 percent to 26 percent. Electability remains a primary consideration for California's Democratic primary voters: 63 percent said beating President Donald Trump was more important in their decision than lining up with a candidate's policy agenda. They are also optimistic about ousting Trump; 55 percent expect his Democratic opponent to win in November. The survey of 408 likely Democratic primary voters was conducted by phone from Sunday through Wednesday. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

Students talk suspects, campus safety following shooting HALEY BROWN

Lead Culture Writer H.Brown@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

On Feb. 14, around 8 p.m., three men in black clothing and ski masks broke into two different houses on the 800 block of Wayne Avenue off IUP’s main campus. The two houses were 835 and 841 Wayne Ave., and the residents were at home when the break-in occurred. According to police reports, the three suspects broke into two houses, where items were stolen from one and a physical altercation that resulted in two victims suffering injuries broke out in the other. One victim suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound to the neck. One suspect was carrying a gun, and it allegedly went off when the fight began. A victim of the robbery was left with a gunshot wound to the neck, and another victim was injured but had not been shot like the first victim had. Neither the identities of the suspects, since they still remain unknown, nor the names of the victims of the crime were released to the public by authorities. Investigators have released the information that they believe that it was not simply a random occurrence and that they do not believe there is maintained risk to IUP students or to IUP’s campus, despite the fact that the suspects have not yet been apprehended. Following the police arriving at the crime scenes, IUP students were sent an alert through email as well as through the IUP emergency notification system that

Students were also urged to not believe rumors and to read reports released by police and the university. “I first heard of the shooting via IUP’s alert system immediately followed up by a fraternity brother who was checking in on me to see that I was OK and safe,” Sean Young (junior, marketing) said. “My initial reaction was a mild shock and anxiety, but I

Some students seemed unruffled by the news and didn’t suspect they were in any sort of danger, while others heeded the IUP warnings and were fearful for their safety. “I actually heard about it at work through the emergency text message,” Marissa Greenblatt (senior, English) said. “I was a little nervous. I was at work and still needed to drive home, but I just stuck to Philly Street because it’s well-lit. I did make sure my door was locked. “I didn’t hear any rumors or theories, though I saw some posts on my Facebook. I mostly just went with the information from the text alerts that I received.”

Larger media companies have been spending heavily to create original content for their new streaming services, with such shows as "The Mandelorian" on Disney+. In contrast, the smaller ViacomCBS is pursuing what it hopes to be a less risky strategy of supplying content for rivals, including Netflix, and bolstering its own streaming services, CBS All Access, which the company is calling a "House of Brands," with movies from Paramount Pictures and cartoons from Nickelodeon. CBS All Access produced a big hit with the original series, "Star Trek: Picard." It also is banking heavily on growth from its free streaming service, Pluto TV, which offers a line-up of existing channels. The service, which also is available in Britain and parts of Europe, will soon launch in South America. ViacomCBS also wants to broaden the scope of its premium channel, Showtime, beyond its traditional strength of scripted series, including "Homeland," "Billions" and "Shameless." It is moving the popular "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars" to Showtime from the basic cable channel VH-1 in June. The company said it plans to use proceeds of its upcoming sale of the hulking Black Rock tower in mid-town Manhattan, the historic headquarters of CBS, to pay down debt and buy back its stock.

South Korean investors eye Texas properties STEVE BROWN TNS Dallas Morning News

Some of North Texas' largest recent property deals have something in common: They were funded by South Korean investors. Last week's $370 million sale of the Union Dallas development set a record of more than $730 per square foot for the office and retail buildings. The eye-popping purchase was made with an investment from South Korea's KB Financial Group and a $222 million loan from Goldman Sachs Bank. The Union Dallas buy comes after another South Korean investor group – IGIS Asset Management, Hana Financial Investment Co. Ltd. and KDB Life Insurance Co. – spent more than $96 million to buy a major stake in AT&T's downtown Dallas headquarters building. Four years ago, South Korea's Mirae Asset Global Investments teamed up with Houston-based Transwestern Investment Group to pay more than $800 million to buy State Farm Insurance's four-tower office project in Richardson. It's still one of the largest real estate purchases ever recorded in North Texas. Just as Canadian investors flocked to Dallas in the late 1970s and early 1980s, in this cycle the city is on South Korea's investment map. "They are seeking durable cash flow assets and like the growth fundamentals in Dallas,"

said Jonathan Napper, executive managing director of Cushman & Wakefield. "The debt markets are helping them leverage to very attractive cash on cash returns. "We are seeing them in other markets outside Dallas as well." Napper said the Korean investors typically flip their purchases in about five years – a shorter tenure than some other foreign buyers. Four years ago, downtown Dallas' KPMG Plaza office tower in the Arts District sold to South Korean investors funded by Nonghyup Bank and Shinhan Bank. The Koreans just sold the highrise to Spanish investor Masaveu Real Estate for an estimated $240 million. Total foreign investment in U.S. real estate grew by almost a quarter in 2019, according to a new report from JLL. More than $63 billion poured into U.S. real estate assets from across the border. That was about a fifth of the total $317 billion invested nationwide in commercial real estate last year. North Texas' largest 2019 commercial property buy – the $584.2 million purchase of Pioneer Natural Resources' new Irving headquarters – was driven by offshore investment. Riyad Capital, a subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's third-largest bank, was a partner in the deal. Total foreign investment dollars flowing into D-FW real estate grew by more than 50 percent and totaled almost $2 billion last year, according to a new report by CBRE.

Wiliot gets $20 million to experiment bluetooth functionality in clothing BRITTANY MEILING TNS San Diego Union-Tribune Giants in technology and consumer products are funneling more cash into a small tech startup in San Diego that's developing tiny bluetooth stickers that can transform everyday items – like clothing, wallets, or Amazon packages – to trackable "connected" devices. The startup, called Wiliot, just raised $20 million from PepsiCo and Verizon's venture capital arm, among several other investors. Last year, the company attracted the attention of tech giants Amazon and Samsung, which have also backed Wiliot. With the new cash, the startup's executives say they're ramping up to mass-produce their tiny bluetooth stickers, and they have customers lining up at the door. The company already has orders for hundreds of thousands of units. Co-headquartered in San Diego and Israel, Wiliot was founded by three former top executives at Wilocity, a chipmaker that was acquired by Qualcomm for $300 million in 2014. That industry connection transferred to the new startup, with Qualcomm Ventures jumping on board as an early investor of Wiliot. Since its inception in 2017, the startup has been designing a bluetooth chip that would be small enough to stick on anything – and cheap enough to treat as a disposable product. Their chip is the size of a postage stamp. It has no batteries, powered instead by leftover radio signals cascading through the air. "If you analyze the airwaves around you, we're surrounded by radio waves," said Steve Statler, Wiliot's senior vice president of marketing and business development, in an interview last year. "We're recycling the radio signals wasted from Wi-Fi, bluetooth and cellular signals." The Wiliot chip can measure temperature, location and air pressure, then transmit that data

(TNS) The process of connecting your shirt to your phone may become reality soon.

back to the cloud. Today, Wiliot has its product working in 20 pilot programs with "world-leading brands," although they declined to disclose who is testing them out. In theory, there are tons of applications for a cheap, disposable bluetooth sticker. Companies could tag anything that's not an

electronic device, expanding the universe of what's "connected." This is especially interesting to companies thinking about logistics and inventory. For example, a restaurant bar could stick the sensors on bottles of liquor, automatically sensing when a whiskey bottle is running low and needs to be re-ordered. Drugmakers

could do the same for pill bottles. Stickers could be embedded with brand information, authenticating that products aren't knock-offs. "We have come a long way in the last year" said Tal Tamir, CEO of Wiliot. "Twelve months ago, conditions had to be perfect for the very first tags to work. Now

we demonstrate Wiliot tags on bottles of wine, boxes of pizza and on envelopes." Statler said Wiliot is bringing on an additional 10 pilot programs with clients, bringing the total up to 30. The startup is working with large, high-end fashion companies, parcel delivery companies, and telecommunications companies, among other clients. A more creative application is being considered by Wiliot's fashion client, which can imagine these tags embedded into articles of clothing. If the consumer opts-in to data collection, the fashion company could determine which items are a hit with shoppers, even after they leave the store. "Our tags will know when those products are picked up and worn," Statler said. But will consumers want tracking technology embedded so deeply in their lives? Statler said Wiliot is well aware of potential consumer concerns. "Our business is dependent on people accepting the real benefits of having a digital identity associated with our products," Statler said. "We're responding on multiple levels." The company has "fasttracked" its security goals, encrypting all signals that their chips send. This is a costly commitment as it requires decryption down the road, but Statler said it was critical to gain the trust of consumers. The company is also complying with privacy legislation in California and Europe, and will not collect data unless consumers choose to opt in. All in all, the startup has raised $70 million in capital, with a $30 million round in January 2019. The latest infusion of cash will provide the resources for Wiliot to support its customers' pilot projects and further develop Wiliot's cloud machine-learning components. Statler said the company plans to hire two applications engineers at their San Diego office, bringing the local headcount to 10 people. Across all its locations, Wiliot employs 45 people.

Manfred out, Torre in as new MLB commissioner

With Rob Manfred having problems as the MLB commissioner, should Joe Torre be the one to replace him.

It came to me in a dream. While the Houston Astros have become the preverbal laughing stock of Major League Baseball, it’s commissioner Rob Manfred that is making himself the ring leader of stupidity for the league. During a press conference after the Astros’ cheating scandal, Manfred gave this thoughts on fan rumors saying that they should be stripped of their championship for their actions. Manfred responded by calling the World Series title “a piece of metal.” Additionally, he resorted to light punishment for the Astros instead of setting a precedent for the league with how MLB handles cheating. He later apologized for his comments, but it solidified that he is not someone who should be in

16

charge of baseball. With this being said, we need to speak out to not only get Manfred out of office, but also get someone with an authoritative gene in their body. That man is Joe Torre. This thought came into my head Tuesday night as I slept, and while most dreams make you question how outrageous it is, this made me consider that this would be the right move. The former champion and current assistant to the commissioner has not given baseball fans a reason that he isn’t fit for the job. He possesses a wealth of baseball IQ, has been a part of the game since 1966 and yields nothing but success that could turn the game around for good.

Think of it this way: No thoughts of disbanding Minor League Baseball teams. An institution of a salary cap. And stricter punishments for shenanigans, rather than a slap on the wrist. He’s been an executive since his retirement as a manager in 2011, dealing with disciplinary issues since then and moving to an assistant to Manfred. Ironic how this lines up, right? But with this said, it’s clear that corporate operations is Torre’s specialty. Let’s face it, baseball fans, Manfred took what Bud Selig built and threw it down the drain, not looking back whatsoever. Torre has that rugged feel that Selig possessed, but could possibly do it better since he’s played and coached the game. He already recognizes what issues ensue in today’s MLB, so how could it possibly get any worse? Well, maybe hiring Clint Hurdle as his assistant.

IUP will present its annual TrumpetFest this weekend. This event features performances by IUP trumpet students and music faculty. All events will be held in Gorell Recital Hall and are free admission to the public. Student recitals will be held Saturday 4 – 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 3 – 6 p.m, and at 4 p.m. Saturday, the Trumpet Studio Recital will occur. Additionally, at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dr. Kevin Eisensmith’s faculty trumpet recital will perform. TrumpetFest is an annual event that began about 20 years ago. It was meant to highlight IUP trumpet students and faculty in a series of performances. It gives students the opportunity to perform one or more pieces in a recital setting. Graduates of the IUP trumpet studio have gone on to possess

successful teaching and performing careers with aid and experience of TrumpetFest. Underclassmen, freshmen and sophomores, perform single pieces in a group recital, while upperclassmen, juniors and seniors, perform half and full solo recitals; they perform several pieces of music. This year, the complete schedule for TrumpetFest features many students and faculty at various times. On Friday, Noah Mason on trumpet will perform with Tyler Roland on tuba at 6 p.m. Saturday will be when the bulk of performances occur. On Saturday, the Trumpet Studio Recital will perform at 4 p.m. Lucas Deist and Kayla Greer will perform with the senior Trumpet Recital at 6 p.m. Eisensmith’s, who is a professor of trumpet, faculty trumpet recital will close out the event and will perform at 8 p.m.

(Facebook) Dr. Kevin Eisensmith, a professor of trumpet, will be performing 8 p.m. Saturday.

“Performing is the culminating event for any musician,”

February 21, 2020

Eisensmith said. “Practicing and rehearsing without ever performing music in front of an audience is pointless. “It’s like painting a beautiful picture, but never allowing anyone else to see it or enjoy it. Pieces of music are ‘stories,’ and stories should be shared with others. “These students have practiced their music, rehearsed with their accompanists and have played their music in front of a jury panel (the brass faculty). P.S., Netflix, fans love ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ sequel MEGAN DONNY Staff Writer M.Donny@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. The long-awaited sequel to Netflix movie “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” “P.S. I Still Love You,” was released Feb. 12 on the streaming platform. The movies are based on New York Times best-selling author Jenny Han’s trilogy of young-adult novels. The novels are titled “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before,” “P.S. I Still Love You” and “Always and Forever, Lara Jean.” The first novel was released back in 2014, and the movie adaptation was created four years later by Netflix in 2018. It took the streaming platform two years before the sequel was made. The first novel and the movie are very similar, with a few minor changes and scene deletions that usually come with a movie adaptation of a novel. The second novel and movie follow a similar format, and the movie relays

(Facebook) Peter and Lara Jean ultimately fall in love in “To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved Before.”

many of the same themes from the novel. In the first film, Lara Jean is a quirky and somewhat shy girl trying to navigate crushes and high school life. The only way she can cope with a strong crush is to write a letter to the boy she has a crush on, confessing her feelings. Lara Jean never sends the letters, though. Instead, she hides them in a box deep in her closet and keeps them a secret. When her letters end up in the hands of the five boys shes addressed the letters to, Lara Jean’s

quiet life begins to change. She ends up in a fake relationship with one of the boys who received a letter. She agrees to pretend to date him because he wants to make his ex-girlfriend, and Lara Jean’s ex-friend, jealous, and Lara Jean wants to avoid confrontation with her biggest and most recent crush, her neighbor and older sister’s ex-boyfriend. Lara Jean and her fake boyfriend Peter, played by Noah Centineo, end up catching feelings for each other and deciding to be in a real relationship.

At the beginning of the second movie, Peter is taking Lara Jean on her first date ever. Lara Jean gets a letter from one of the boys that received one of her love letters. John Ambrose was her sixth grade crush. She tries to write him back and realizes she still has a crush on him. She and Peter begin having minor disagreements, and Lara Jean begins having insecurities. Even though Peter is being sweet and kind, Lara Jean still can’t keep her mind off John. Lara Jean ends up volunteering with John at the retirement home and realizing how deeply her crush goes. She begins to realize how her and Peter aren’t as alike as her and John are. She has a lot more insecurities with Peter than she has when she is volunteering with John. Lara Jean holds off on telling John about how she is with Peter. When Peter, John, Lara Jean and some of their other friends get together to dig up a time capsule from middle school, things get awkward between the love triangle. Even after John finds out about

Peter and Laura Jean, they continue to have fun together. Lara Jean finds out that in the first movie, Peter was actually waiting for his ex-girlfriend when Lara Jean finds him in a hot tub and they end up kissing, solidifying their feelings for each other. She also finds out that his ex-girlfriend has been cozying up to him again. Lara Jean and Peter reconsider their relationship. Meanwhile, John continues to show Lara Jean that he is interested in her. The tension with both boys builds to one defining moment for both relationships. The soundtrack during the movie was filled with good songs by artists like Hey Violet, MARINA and Sofi Tukker. Lara Jean’s iconic and much-admired style continues in the second movie. Her style is unique, unconventional and unlike many people in her generation. While the second movie was not as memorable or exciting as the first, it still had some lasting themes that many people in relationships can relate to today.

Justin Bieber becomes household name again with new album ANNA MECHLING Lead News Writer A.Mechling@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. I’ve never been a Justin Bieber superfan, but I’ve enjoyed his many famous jams. On Valentine’s Day, Justin released his fifth studio album, “Changes.” This album has a total of 17 songs. He’s back to being popular and dominating the music scene and is currently the No. 1 streaming artist on Spotify. As a musician, I like many of his songs, but honestly as a person, Justin isn’t very appealing to me. However, this isn’t a personal appealing review, it’s a music album review, and that’s what I’m going to do. After listening to his entire album, it is clear that it’s an album dedicated to his wife, Hailey Baldwin, whom he married Sept.13, 2018. His first song on his new album is “All Around Me.” This song alludes to his faithful and committed relationship, and Justin sings, “Never thought I could be loyal/ To someone other than myself.” In that song, he also says, “Our love’s unconditional/ I need you all around me.” How sweet, yet so cringe-worthy. “Habitual” is the next song on his album. I actually really liked this song. Like most of his songs on his album, the song was very catchy and had a nice beat. I am not a huge fan of Justin Bieber in general, but his music and his songs are very catchy. He and his music producing team know how to market and write songs that are 1) meaningful and 2) popular. “Habitual” has lyrics like “Our feelings go deeper than the ocean,” “Our love is habitual” and “A whole new perspective for life.” It is clear that Justin has much love for his wife and was able to create an entire album centered around her and their relationship. I am also not a huge fan of Hailey, but I do think that, at least from what the media has portrayed, she has been a positive influence in Justin’s life. “Come Around Me” is more so about missing one another. Justin sings, “Treat me like

(Facebook) Justin Bieber broke onto the music scene in 2010 with “My World” (top) and is reclaiming his throne with his new album, “Changes” (bottom).

you miss me, even though you’ve been with me,” “When you come around me, do me like you miss me even though you’ve been with me” and “Let’s not miss out on each other.” I got that this song was about not being together all the time but missing each other because they have that much of a lovable and intimate relationship.

In this song, Justin really sings his heart out and sings super high. I don’t think it’s too much but think he’s very smooth and goes nicely with the beat. I also thought the song got better as it went. It’s a favorite of mine. According to MSN, “Yummy,” “Get Me” and “Intentions” were released before his entire album

was released. “Yummy” is a very sexual song. Many of his songs are somewhat sexual, but I think this one probably takes the cake. In the chorus, Justin sings, “Rollin’ eyes back in my head, make my toes curl, yeah, yeah.” I’ll give you a few seconds to take that line in. During a recent Q&A session

in London, a fan asked Justin what he does on a regular day, and his response was, “When I’m with my wife, we like to… You guys can guess what we do. It gets pretty crazy… That’s pretty much all we do.” My friend said “Yummy” was a bad song and that it was the reason why she hasn’t really listened to Justin’s new album. I don’t think the song is horrible. Is it good? No, not at all. Is it catchy? Very. That’s all I have to say. But my favorite song from “Changes” is probably “Intentions.” This song is super catchy, and it does have some nice lyrics to it. Justin sings, “Gorgeous, make ‘em drop dead, you a killer. Shower you with all my attention. Yeah, these are my only intentions.” I’m not entirely sure it needed Quavo rapping in it, but it did break up the song so that Justin wasn’t singing the chorus too many times. I honestly listen to this song at least once a day, if not more. It’s a great song to sing in the shower and to work out to. “That’s What Love Is” is another song I really like on the album. It’s super catchy and sweet, and Justin hits some high notes in this song. He sings, “That’s what true love is/ Wouldn’t want nobody else by my side.” The only criticism for this song is that the ending was weird. It kind of just stopped. Often, songs have a clear ending. To me, it kind of ended abruptly and didn’t have a nice ending note. Overall, I liked Justin’s album. He has a lot of really catchy tracks. And the songs weren’t just written randomly; they had some meaning and inspiration behind them. I like when artists have inspiration for songs or albums. It creates more meaning and makes them more vulnerable and open, which can help fans connect with their music more. Justin seems to be doing okay coming back to the music scene since “Purpose” came out in 2015. He is No. 1 on Spotify and is going on tour in the fall. He is coming to Pittsburgh in August, but knowing the many “Beliebers,” it’s already sold out in many places.

(Facebook) “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” premiered Jan. 7 on NBC and follows the life of Zoey Clarke, a girl who can read people’s minds in song lyrics.

Everyone has a playlist; Zoey Clarke can hear it in NBC’s new show HALEY BROWN

Lead Culture Writer H.Brown@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” is a show that time and time again proves itself to be just that: extraordinary. While multiple movies and shows have followed the same sort of plot in the past, in which a main character acquires a quirky trait or power that no one else has, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” makes its audience laugh, cry and blush without fail. Sporting a fantastic cast of characters including Jane Levy, Skylar Astin (also known as Jessie from “Pitch Perfect”), Alex Newell (a star known from the popular show “The Glee Project”) and Peter Gallagher among other great actors and actresses. It seems that the cast does not feature a bad actor, and the storyline that seems to flow effortlessly. The show has released only two episodes so far, and the pilot premiered on NBC on Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. This show is perfect for music lovers, and the rousing group numbers reminds the watcher

of some of the indisputably high-energy group musical numbers in musical movies like “La La Land” and “The Last Five Years.” The storyline revolves around the increasingly complicated life of Zoey Clarke, who lives in San Francisco and works as a computer coder at a high profile, trendy tech company called SPRQ Point. The first episode opens on Zoey being awoken by her irritating neighbor belting out the lyrics to “Angel of the Morning” by Juice Newton. She confronts her neighbor Mo, and within the interaction, you learn that Zoey has an unusual aversion to music and prefers the comfort and simplicity of podcasts. In the beginning of the pilot episode, Zoey is encouraged by her concerned mother to get an MRI for her strange recent headaches and eye pain. During her MRI, there is a freak accident when a typical San Francisco earthquake causes the MRI tech’s playlist to somehow go haywire and shuffle play at warp speed right into Zoey’s subconscious. When she leaves the MRI, she realizes she can suddenly hear the thoughts of the people around her, but instead of being a typical mind-reader, she

can only hear other people’s thoughts through the songs they sing. She is the only one who seems to be able to witness the phenomena and is immediately overwhelmed and convinced she is losing her mind.

“This show and all it brings to the table is extraordinary indeed.” ~Haley Brown The first big group number involves the random San Francisco crowd on the streets to break into the song “Help!” by The Beatles. There is synchronized dancing that revolves around Zoey wherever she tries to escape. The crowd runs through the streets after her as they belt

out the lyrics and perform an exciting dance number simultaneously. The scene ends abruptly when the song and all the participants of the unexpected spectacle dissipate as if nothing ever happened. Zoey hears the desperate mournful song of one of the new employees at her company named Simon, played by John Clarence Stewart, whom she develops a crush on. Zoey is shocked by the rawness of his apparent grief. She reaches out to him and draws out his confession about his struggle with the loss of his father, who died by suicide. Thinking they have a rare connection, Zoey is stoked by his willingness to be open with her about his struggles, until her hope for romance is crushed by her discovery of the unfortunate detail that her new love interest has a fiancé. During the first episode, watchers learn that Zoey’s father has been recently diagnosed with a degenerative brain disease that has caused the loss of his ability to communicate. Zoey confides in her father about how difficult her new “power” is making her life. As she explains her trying circumstances, her formerly

unresponsive father, played by Gallagher, stands up for the first time in the show and sings her the sweet song “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. This scene is extremely poignant, yet hopeful and lets Zoey know that, despite his inability to communicate with others, her father can, in fact, understand everything happening around him. This scene also helps Zoey realize that her strange new power does have its upsides, and she excitedly explains to her mother and brother that her father can process the things going on around him, even as he sits with a blank expression, unable to move or talk. This show is exciting, moving and has plenty of comic relief as well. With wonderful actors, an exciting and intriguing plotline, unique expressions of emotion, a wide range of songs perfect for all music fanatics and evidence of character development in only the first two episodes, the watcher couldn’t possibly ask for more, and yet the urge to beg for more episodes as soon as possible is irresistible. This show and all it brings to the table is definitely extraordinary indeed.

Fans worship ‘Rap God’ music video 1 billion times LEVI DONALDSON

Staff Writer L.Donaldson@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinon. Marshall Mathers has created a musical persona and long-lasting career. His alter egos, Eminem and Slim Shady, have become undeniable parts of modern culture, and while his new work is critically panned but still breaking sale records, his older catalogue is still quite beloved. One of his most infamous songs, “Rap God,” is boastful, taunting, personality-driven and full of ridiculous wordplay. He also raps very fast at certain parts, and this song especially has helped cement his speed as a part of his reputation. The music video for “Rap God” has recently surpassed one billion views on YouTube, which is quite an accomplishment. With Eminem being such a memorable part of pop culture, students at IUP have a number of opinions on his work and this milestone for him. “’Rap God’ to me was absolutely just a tongue-in-cheek poke at the industry to remind everyone that he hasn't lost his touch,” Dylan Latore (sophomore, communications media) said. “The video I'm not so sure about; I feel it could be interpreted similarly, so no, I'm not surprised about the views. “I think Em will always be a legend. I don't listen to him as much now, but there's no argument he's one of the best artists of the genre. It's just not as openly talked about as Kendrick, Cole, Andre 3000, etc., so I never had much of a phase but rather a steady intake of his music my whole life. His career has evolved with a sense of maturity. But it's still great to see him making his ‘f**k you, I'm crazy’ music every once in a while as well.” Most fans view Eminem as an artist who commands respect with his music. “I believe that Eminem is a respected artist in the rap community,” Ian Zimmerman (sophomore, communications media) said. “I never really had a phase with his music. I've always respected him for what he was able to do for

the culture and as an individual artist.” Others enjoy his writing of lyrics in his songs. “I honestly see Eminem as someone with talented writing ability but rarely having great ideas for actual song and album concepts,” Will Luetkhans (sophomore, communications media) said. “I also feel like he definitely expanded and maybe even gentrified hip-hop’s original sound and culture to be so massive as to hit with white audiences in the early 2000s. “While this did introduce a lot of people to hip hop that maybe weren’t listening before, I feel like his sound has definitely

strayed away from his original good music a little too much. I think he definitely is always hopping on the next musical trend, which I think is very annoying.” Eminem has been described as weird but impressive. “I think Eminem has some interesting qualities about him; a lot of his music struck me as being pretty impressive,” Sam Cunningham (sophomore, English) said. “Yes, this means I had an Eminem phase. “I think ‘Rap God’ is a big achievement for him personally. It's been a big song for a long time and still is possibly. And I'm honestly kind of glad it passed a billion views, great job.”

Nintendo has announced a new Switch Lite color for fans to choose – coral. This is the first new Switch Lite color since the launch of the mobile-only console in the fall. It joins the three other colors already available: turquoise, gray and yellow. The new color will release in Japan on March 20 and April 3 in the West. Earlier this month, Nintendo also announced an “Animal Crossing” themed Switch in line with the new game in the series set to release March 20. It is important to note that no production slowdown due to the coronavirus outbreak is expected until late March, Nintendo said. Unfortunately, Switch Lite’s big brother has not encountered the same luck. Many gaming companies have been hurt by the outbreak in mainland China, as

many production facilities have shut down. Notably, developer Private Division had to delay their Switch port, which is just remaking the game to run on the Switch, due to the virus. “We’re delaying Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch due to the coronavirus impacting the Virtuos team working on the port, to provide them enough time to finish development,” Private Division said in a tweet Feb. 6. “We’ll now be releasing the physical version on cartridge. Once we have a new launch date, we’ll let you know!” The virus has also hindered the eSports industry. “League of Legends,” “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” and “Overwatch” all have had to cancel events or matches held in the region. As of this writing, more than 75,000 people have contracted the virus and 2,000 have died. All but six have died in mainland China. The majority of those infected are also in the same region.

Meghan Trainor releases new album to treat yourself to LEVI DONALDSON

Staff Writer L.Donaldson@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. Meghan Trainor is a well-known pop star who has returned to the music scene recently with her third studio album, “TREAT MYSELF.” It feels as if Trainor does, in fact, treat herself to a number of cut corners and breaks from the songwriting room. The lyrics are especially lazy, and this album is full of boring metaphors and imagery. The album cover is perfect for this project because it’s bland, boring and meant to put her in a good light, which is wholly thematic of this record. An interesting fact about “TREAT MYSELF” is that it's actually a Target-exclusive album. A lot of albums start with an intro to guide you into the atmosphere and world of the record. A Tribe Called Quest does this very noticeably in their work, for instance, and they set up each album as an artistic journey and unique world. “TREAT MYSELF,” however, has no intro and cuts immediately into

(Facebook) Meghan Trainor’s new album, “TREAT MYSELF,” was released Jan. 31 and is her third studio album.

her voice. Instead of being an energizing or engaging track, the first song, “Wave,” is entirely generic and forgettable. The second song on “TREAT MYSELF” features Nicki Minaj with a third verse rap feature. The message on this song is a good one, but it's done in such a cookie-cutter way that boils down self-love to a generic chorus about makeup not equating self-worth. Meghan has no chemistry with Nicki, and it feels like an inorganic decision

made by executives because Nicki Minaj sells records. One of the worst songs on the album is “Evil Twin,” a concept about anxiety and doing things you regret. However, the feelings of the song keep itself upbeat and poppy instead of having a weight to it like its subject matter would suggest. The lyrics are incredibly boring and poorly written, with its chorus being, “(That's my evil twin) No, it ain't my fault, (That's my evil twin) It wasn't me at all, Don't be

mad at me, I can't help that she's a wild one, baby, wild one, baby.” It’s really surprising to me that it took four people to write it. This album has been in development for almost three years because Meghan has been refining it and adding songs to reflect her journey. She actually got the name of the album from advice her therapist gave her. I truly believe that Meghan is passionate and genuine about what she is talking about, but it's just very confusing how this

long-delayed labor of love is so boring and devoid of personality and individuality. The messages are conveyed in such contrived, basic and bland ways. The production on this album is really lush and expensive. It feels very full and listenable, and I’m sure songs off “TREAT MYSELF” will be played in department stores. One of the songs had a rather sharp scream sound before beat drops as well as a pretty great choir part, but the creative productive just highlighted Meghan’s lack of artistic presence. The tracks like “No Excuses” where she’s more evident and energetic still sound very much like a product and something you might listen to a fake pop star sing in a TV show. Overall, I don’t hate this album, and it has some very commendable messages; it just doesn’t do anything creatively and isn’t original or groundbreaking in the least. I’m sure fans of Meghan Trainor will enjoy this as well, but it really doesn’t do anything to attract new listeners, and I found it very derivative and boring.

No. 9 IUP is coming hot off a close 80–72 double-overtime thriller against Edinboro Wednesday. This win came after the Hawks’ tight victory against Gannon on Saturday. The Fighting Scots brought the fire and went on a 9–0 run in the first few minutes of the game. The Hawks didn’t take it sitting down and popped off a 14–2 run right after. IUP was a defensive force in the first half, blocking Edinboro nine times. The Hawks held a strong 29–20 lead going into halftime. After some halftime adjustments, Edinboro outplayed the Hawks for a majority of the second half. The

Sports

Hawks were turnover-stricken again with 19 turnovers, including nine in the second half. IUP appeared to be in firm control of the game with a nine-point lead with only 7:23 remaining in the game. Edinboro put together a comeback from the herculean efforts of Michaela Barnes to go on an 11–4 run that would help tie the game and force overtime. Barnes is currently the scoring leader in the PSAC with a staggering 25.5 points per game and put up an impressive 31 points against IUP. With neither team able to decide the game in regulation, overtime would be needed to decide a victor. The Crimson Hawks came out of the gates hot in overtime with a quick bucket from Justina Mascaro (junior, finance) and a pair

of back to back 3s from Natalie Myers (senior, education). IUP would never allow the Fighting Scots to come back and clinched a big time win against a major conference competitor. Mascaro stood out for IUP with her third consecutive 20-point game and helped propel her squad to victory with some late clutch buckets. Courtney Alexander (junior, nursing) put up 20 points as well, despite shooting only 4–17 from the field. This was a tighter game than the Crimson Hawks would have liked; however, they fully expected a top-tier performance from a tough in-conference team. “That’s a good team,” coach Tom McConnell said after the game. “They’ve got the leading scorer in the conference, and they

have shooters around her. They have everything it takes to come back.” “Yeah, we definitely did (expect a run),” Mascaro chimed in on her opponent’s performance after the game. “We knew Michaela was going to get some points tonight. But I think we held our composure overall at the end.” This victory secured IUP the No. 1 seed and home court advantage in the upcoming PSAC playoffs. The Hawks improved to 23–2 and 18–1 within the PSAC. The Hawks currently sit 2.5 games ahead of Gannon with only three games remaining in the season. With one more victory, IUP would gain the PSAC West title. With playoffs right around the corner, the Hawks will have to compete against the best teams in the

PSAC and Division II, ranked at the top of the Atlantic Region. McConnell and this squad are focused in and are continually striving to become better with each game. “We’ve got to be a little more aggressive and confident in our ball handling. That’s an area where we have to continue to grow,” McConnell said. This squad has responded well in the face of tough competition over the past couple of weeks and will continue to prove their merit and work ethic into the post season. IUP will travel to take on the 13– 12 Seton Hill Griffins on Saturday in the first of a two-road game stretch. With only one more victory to take the PSAC West title outright, the Hawks will be hungry for yet another victory.

in field goals and 6-for-7 from the line in a 16-point night. The Hawks managed to tally 40+ points for each half, 46 in the first, then 40 in the second. This was one of the factors that played into the win in their second to last home game of the regular season.

IUP’s defense was another well considered part of their game. Where Edinboro only scored 10 points off turnovers, IUP scored 27. For the Fighting Scots, Trey Staunch took more shots than anyone on either team, going 13-for-18 to score a career-high 30 points.

Daylon Harris was the only other Edinboro player to score in double-digits, putting up 15 points. The dominant victory came just a few hours after IUP was ranked at No. 1 in the initial NCAA Atlantic Region rankings. If that ranking holds until Selection Sunday, Indi-

ana would host the Atlantic Region section of the tournament – and it may also end up hosting women’s games as well, as the women’s team is also currently at No. 1. The Crimson Hawks have three games remaining in the regular season, with just one of them at home Feb. 29 against Pitt-Johnstown. If the team wins that one, they will become the first IUP team to go unbeaten at the KCAC throughout a full season. Before that, they will travel to Clarion and Seton Hill, two teams at the bottom of the PSAC West. Each of the six teams are already determined as to who will participate in the postseason from the division. One more victory for the Hawks will clinch them the No. 1 seed, as Mercyhurst and Pitt-Johnstown have three fewer conference wins. California (Pa.), Gannon and Slippery Rock will round out the bottom trio of seeds and will likely each play in the first round of the tournament. In the Atlantic Region, which will not be set until after the conference tournaments are completed, Shippensburg is just behind the Hawks, with West Liberty in third place. IUP’s 22–2 record is two losses fewer than any Atlantic team.

Her 200-yard IM time of 2:02.08 set a record and claimed a victory in that event. The 200-yard free time of 1:49.32 was not only a school record but a PSAC Championships record as well. The championships continue through Saturday.

S&T Bank Arena finalist for grant from Pittsburgh Penguins BRAD O’HARA

Staff Writer B.L.Ohara@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

The S&T Bank Arena in Indiana is looking to get a makeover with the help of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Commercial Construction. Every year, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation puts together a friendly competition between local ice rinks for $100,000 worth of materials and construction services. All they are looking for is the most deserving ice rink. This year, more than 400 local rinks threw their name in the hat for the grand prize. From the 400, only 16 were selected to move on. Now, they narrowed the results again down to three local ice rinks. The finalists are the Belmont Complex Ice Arena, the Beaver County Ice Arena and the S&T Bank Arena. The S&T Bank Arena is a staple for Indiana County, Indiana borough and IUP. The arena is the only ice-skating rink located in Indiana County and provides both open skating and organized sports to the local community. The arena provides plenty of

games at the S&T Bank Arena. However, the ice is not just taken up by student athletes. There are also two adult leagues that allow both former hockey players and people that want to learn play in a competitive environment. There is a non-contact competitive league that is made up of

adults with a formal hockey background. The league is set up for 10 regular season games and a playoff that gives adults a chance to get back on the ice. However, there is also a Jurassic league for those who might be looking to jump on the ice for the first time. The Jurassic league is a little less competitive with 13 games and no playoffs, but it allows for adults to pick up the sport of hockey no matter their age. The S&T Bank Arena has no shortage of uses or people devoted to their programs, but the infrastructure is falling behind. Many elements of the building that are necessary for its function are the original systems from when the arena was built. The S&T Bank Arena also has plans for renovating the locker rooms and updating all of the lighting in the rink. In order to maintain the rink and continue to provide such a wide variety of programs and resources, the S&T Bank Arena sees themselves as the most deserving ice rink. If you agree, you can either go to the S&T Bank Arena website or to the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation webpage to cast your vote.

Wilder vs. Fury rematch set to be fight of the year STEVEN LANGDON JR. Managing Editor S.Langdon@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. It is time to get ready for the fight of the year. Feb. 22 is the day every boxing fan has cycled for the last couple months. It is time for the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury rematch. It is a stacked main card that will feature two title fights and a world title eliminator. The entire day will have only one fight scheduled for four rounds with the other nine fights scheduled for at least eight rounds. The main focus will be on the main card. The first fight could be the second best fight on the night as Emanuel Navarrete vs. Jeo Tupas Santisima. This will be for Navarrete’s World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior featherweight title. First will be the champion, Navarrete, who has 30 wins and one loss. He had one of the best years in recent boxing history. He was not in contention for fighter of the year, but in my opinion, he should have been. He had four fights last year, winning all of them, and his opponents had a combined 88 wins and five losses with one split decision. This is another opportunity to try and solidify that he is the best junior featherweight in the world. It will be interesting to see if Navarrete decides in the near future to move up a weight class. It is a four pound difference to move up to featherweight. That would set up a fight with the current WBO featherweight holder Shakur Stevenson, who are both signed with Top Rank. His opponent is Santisima. He is from the Philippines and is part of the generation who grew up with Manny Pacquiao. He has 19 wins and two losses. This is a huge step up as it will be his first title fight and first fight outside of his homeland. He is going to struggle if he cannot get on top of Navarrete early. My prediction is that Navarrete wins the 12 round contest by technical knockout in the fifth round. Navarrete will use his large stamina to make Santisima tired early then catch him with a string of unanswered punches. The second fight on the main

(Facebook) Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury will fight for a second time Saturday.

card is the heavyweight eliminator between Gerald Washington and Charles Martin. The winner will remain in contention for Anthony Joshua’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) title. Both are looking at possibly their last title opportunity. Washington will enter the contest at 20–3–1. He has had a rough couple of years when he has struggled with tougher competition. All three of his losses have come in his last five fights. The biggest thing he has to take away from those losses was when he fought Wilder in 2017. At 37, this could be a career-ending fight. He needs to win to stay relevant at this point. Martin comes into the fight with a 27–2–1 record. He is also the former IBF champion. The last time he had a title fight was when he lost the title to Joshua in the United Kingdom in 2016. Martin has been better than Washington in the last five winning all but one. He will be looking to pick up the win and try to set up a

rematch with Joshua. My prediction is that Martin will win in a unanimous decision. Finally the main event of the evening. Wilder vs. Fury is the biggest fight in years. It is expected to be the best heavyweight fight in the last two decades. The first time they fought resulted in a controversial draw. The amount of press this fight has gotten is astonishing. Some people who know nothing about boxing have at least heard of the fight that will be on pay-per-view. I’ll start with Wilder who currently has the World Boxing Council (WBC) title and has a record of 42 wins and one draw. He has one of the deadliest right hands of all time. His power is comparable to Ivan Drago from “Rocky 4.” The last time Wilder faught was in November against Luis Ortiz. Wilder showed that you do not need to win rounds in order to get the win. The scorecards showed that he was down in every round until he showed his devastating right hand and knocked out Ortiz.

The “Bronze Bomber” is going to need to win rounds in this fight. He has talked about “baptising” Fury. The main question that I have is if he will get too deep into the trash talking. He has been trash talking more than usual since the fight was announced. Fury has had one of the biggest zero to hero stories for the sport. Like Wilder he has a prediction of his own, “I will knock him out in the second round,” said Fury. He keeps saying that something big will happen in the second round. Question is will it be in his favor or not? Fury became the unified heavyweight champion when he beat Wladimir Klitschko. He was stripped of his titles a couple days later before falling into a deep depression. He would lose all but one title, the Lineal Heavyweight championship. The only reason he did not lose that recognition is because the only way to lose the title is in the ring. The title means “the man who beat the man.” If you want to know the full story about Fury he has an autobiogra-

phy called “Behind the Mask.” It details his entire life up to his last fight with Otto Wallin. The Wallin fight showed how vulnerable Fury could be. He had two major cuts; one was over his eyebrow and the other on his eyelid. He lasted 12 rounds and won the fight by decision. The press conferences have been fierce with the last one before the fight resulting in some shoving. When the two met face to face Wednesday, some words were said and Wilder got mad when Fury got in his face. The North American Boxing Association has said during the weigh-in that there will not be a face to face. My prediction is that Wilder will knock out Fury in the eighth round. Fury is confident, but I think he is too confident this time. Both have not lost in the ring but one will have to this time and Wilder just has too much power for Fury to handle. The undercards will start around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The fight could be bought on PPV through ESPN or Fox Sports.

(TNS) The Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild have both been very involved at the trade deadline.

Teams scrambling to set lineups ahead of trade deadline TYLER COMO

Staff Writer T.D.Como@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

The trade deadline slowly approaches teams of the NHL. This offers opportunities for GMs to possibly undo trades they thought would work out but didn’t. Or, after dealing with injuries, it opens the lineup to bring in some different talent to give teams a little extra boost. There is a constantly shifting energy with rankings, and it’s up to individual players and their teams to do the best they can while the time is still allotted. Recently, there have been some big shifts in the Metro Division. First things first, the Pittsburgh Penguins (37–15–6) have moved into first

place in the Metro. Despite adding more names to the injury list, they continue on as if it were their normal lineup. Tristan Jarry continues to prove his worth, and Matt Murray is coming back to the old Mur that we knew from the 2016–17 era. The Philadelphia Flyers (33–20– 7) have found themselves ranked within the top three of the Metro Division. The Flyers are seemingly invincible after leading after two periods but are somewhat reckless when it comes to being behind after two periods, though it’s not that great throughout the NHL either. The Flyers look to take on a division rival, the Columbus Blue Jackets, on Thursday night at home after beating Columbus 5–1. In the past 10, the Washington Capitals are 4–6, and three of those

losses came from division teams: Penguins (4–3), Flyers (7–2) and Islanders (5–3). Not only is the team dropping, but Ovi has been quiet on the scoring sheet. He’s gone five games without scoring any points, and sits only two goals from tallying 700 points. Washington’s captain is looking to get those two goals and win against the Canadiens on Thursday night. Where the Capitals’ captain is trying to etch his name in history more so than he already has, the Oilers’ captain looks to make progress since his injury. Connor McDavid still ranks fourth in the NHL with 81 points despite being out since Feb. 8 after suffering a quad muscle injury. Word on the street was McDavid would be out two to three weeks,

and looking ahead, Saturday would be the two-week marker. McDavid looks to be making the road trip, which is a positive sign considering other big injuries the team has suffered. Other names out of the lineup are Oscar Klefbom with a shoulder injury, James Neal with a bum foot and Zack Kassian who’s been suspended for seven games after kicking Erik Cernak of the Tampa Bay Lightning a few games back. Though they may not be in first place, they’re looking to be in decent shape to contend for it as the season rolls on. The Vancouver Canucks (32–22–8) have been playing well and looking good doing it. There is a tie between the second-place teams in the division, Vancouver and the Vegas Golden

Knights (31–22–8). Success comes from different aspects of the team, but after acquiring J.T. Miller from Tampa Bay, he surely wasn’t what they were expecting. Miller leads the Canucks with 59 points. He offers a perfect duo toward Elias Pettersson’s gameplay as well. Considering Brock Boeser will be out a majority of the regular season, GM Jim Benning has looked into the pool of available players and may have found the perfect fit. The Canucks welcome Tyler Toffoli into the lineup and has proven to be a valuable asset in the few games he’s played. He was received from the LA Kings after having an amazing game against the Colorado Avalanche by scoring his first NHL hat trick.

Flyers in fight in Metropolitan to earn spots behind Pens, Caps AUSTIN SMITH

Staff Writer A.S.Smith7@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

The Philadelphia Flyers find themselves in third place in the Metropolitan Division race right behind the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals. Some would say that because of the strength of the Capitals and the hot Penguins, the first and second spot in the Metro are already wrapped up. The Capitals have been slipping as of late, and the Penguins took over first place, making them the favorites. Now, the Orange and Black are in third thanks to a great 5–1 win against the crippling Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. I think the Flyers can maintain that third place spot and maybe even jump into second just because of how good they are playing right now. Now, second place is a stretch, but the Flyers look like a team that does not want to just settle for a wildcard spot or even third place. If the Flyers take a win against the Blue Jackets on Thursday at Nationwide Arena, they will distance

themselves even more between the current wild card teams and could put Columbus in a very bad situation because of how the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders are. This a must-win for Columbus

but pretty much a very needed win for the Flyers to keep pace in the standings. This win also needs to be a regulation win because you cannot give up even an extra point this time of the year. Good news for the Flyers is that down this next

stretch of games, they will be at the Wells Fargo Center, where they have had tons of success. At this point of the year, you are also looking for your veteran players to step up, such as Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier, Jakub Vo-

racek and Kevin Hayes. Giroux has stepped up recently, putting up eight points in his last five games, which is what Flyers fans want to see. Some people had questioned the captain as of late because Giroux typically has more points at this time of the season than where he is at now. Like I mentioned, though, Giroux knows where the Flyers are in the playoff race and knows what he must bring to the table from every game here on out. The other players I mentioned, like Couturier, Voracek and Hayes, are also producing a lot more. We have already seen how good Couturier and Hayes have been making a big impact on the Flyers’ wins this season. In fact, Couturier is leading the team with 53 points. Couturier, a center, is a Selke Trophy candidate for his great two-way play both offensively and defensively. So, with Giroux stepping up and as well at Coots and Hayes playing a role and Voracek, the Flyers will be looking in a future of success. Carter Hart and Brian Elliot look to lead the Flyers to victory in their next several games coming up while they tend the net and look to keep the pucks out.

Kings’ rebuild continues as LA sends Martinez to Vegas for picks JACK HARRIS Los Angeles Times TNS Not even six years have passed since Alec Martinez sped down the left side of the ice, glided toward the back post, and tapped in the championship-clinching goal for the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 of the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. Yet, with Martinez’s trade to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021 being made official Wednesday afternoon, only six members of the franchise’s most-recent title-winning squad remain with the team. “Alec has been an important part of the organization for a number of years and was a key member of our Stanley Cup teams,” Kings general manager Rob Blake said in a release, parroting the same sentiment he offered about Kyle Clifford, Jack Campbell and Tyler Toffoli – all of whom were traded

(TNS) Alec Martinez was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights.

this month. “We thank Marty for everything he’s done for our organization, our fans, and our community.” Two weeks ago, Blake said he wanted to add both picks and prospects ahead of the NHL’s Monday trade deadline. With four days remaining, the third-year GM has al-

ready acquired plenty of both. After acquiring Vegas’ 2020 second-round pick and St. Louis’ 2021 second-round pick (which Vegas had previously traded for), the Kings have 20 draft selections over the next two years, including three second-round picks this summer. Their prospect pipeline, consid-

ered one of the NHL’s best at the beginning of the season, has also been bolstered by the addition of 20-year-old Tyler Madden through the trade Monday of Toffoli to Vancouver. The Kings’ NHL roster is already trending younger, with six players age 25 or younger having played in

at least 40 games this season. Their minor-league affiliate in Ontario is competing for an American Hockey League playoff spot with a team partially built around players under 21, including highly anticipated center prospects Gabe Vilardi and Jaret Anderson-Dolan. To make room for the next wave, the Kings could make more deals in the coming days. Jeff Carter, 35, is the most prominent player involved in trade rumors. The alternate captain’s contract, which doesn’t expire for three more seasons, is worth a hefty $5.27 million in annual average value. For that reason, some have classified Carter as difficult to move. But on Tuesday, Sportsnet speculated that Philadelphia could be considering Carter, who was drafted by the Flyers and played there from 2005–11. Carter has had a bounce-back year this season, but he is far from the scorer he once was.

Darvish says Astros would have been disbanded in Japan after scandal DYLAN HERNANDEZ Los Angeles Times TNS Yu Darvish tried to picture how a sign-stealing scandal similar to the Houston Astros’ would have unfolded in his home country. Initially, he couldn’t. “I can’t even imagine,” he said in Japanese. Darvish chuckled. Seated in a metal chair in the middle of the Chicago Cubs’ spring-training complex, he tilted his head as he gathered his thoughts. “Wouldn’t the organization be disbanded?” Darvish said. “The organization would be disbanded, right?” He wondered aloud about the effect on Nippon Professional Baseball, which has two six-team leagues. “Well, without a doubt, the team would be stripped of its title,” Darvish said. Shellacked in each of the two starts he made for the Dodgers in the 2017 World Series, Darvish was perhaps the most affected player by the Astros’ systemic cheating. In his view, if the hypothetical scenario in Japan represented one extreme on the spectrum of justice, Major League Baseball’s relatively minor punishment of the Astros marked the opposite. He called for a more balanced resolution to a controversy that has rocked the sport. Darvish acknowledged the downside of a society like Japan’s, in which celebrities linked to drug use, extramarital affairs or even tax evasion often vanish overnight from public life. “I always felt uncomfortable about that,” Darvish said. “I don’t think that’s a good custom. Living in this world, we all just want to be happy. And I don’t think it is right to be denied that opportunity over a single mistake.” Darvish, who was born to a Japanese mother and an Iranian father, has firsthand experience with that aspect of the culture. When he was an 18-year-old rookie with the Nippon-Ham Fighters, he was photographed smoking in a gambling parlor. The minimum age for smoking and gambling in Japan is 20. The news was widely reported. Darvish’s reputation suffered.

(TNS) Yu Darvish (left) has spoke very critically of the Astros’ scandal.

As part of his punishment, Darvish was ordered by a team official to write an essay reflecting on his mistake. He didn’t have a problem with that. What he did have a problem with was being told to write a different essay on the same subject every day for a month. By comparison, Darvish said, “America is very tolerant of mistakes.” In his first major league season, in 2012, his teammates on the Texas Rangers included Josh Hamilton, a recovering drug addict who was the American League’s most valuable player two years earlier. “When I saw the generosity of spirit of the people who live in America and their willingness to give second chances, it had a very wonderful effect on me,” Darvish said. And when allegations of the sign stealing first surfaced in November, Darvish wasn’t as upset with the Astros as he was disappointed in them. Darvish said the revelations didn’t change how he viewed the results of the 2017 World Series, reasoning that recovering from that defeat made him better, the person he is today. This was how Darvish continued to view the controversy until last week. His thoughts changed when he saw a television interview in which Astros shortstop Carlos Correa said Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger should “shut the (blank) up” be-

cause he was unfamiliar with the details of the Astros’ sign-stealing program. Correa was responding to remarks Bellinger made about how Astros second baseman Jose Altuve stole an MVP award from New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge in 2017. Correa was adamant Altuve didn’t have signs relayed to him while he was hitting. “I wasn’t bothered too much about the whole thing, but when I saw that, I thought the players probably aren’t that remorseful,” Darvish said. Darvish was confounded that Correa could say what he said. “I understand what they want to say,” Darvish said. “They know the truth about who did it and who didn’t. But they’re all viewed as cheaters right now. If one of them says, ‘This guy didn’t do it,’ the words have no credibility. You don’t know if what he’s saying is true or not. I don’t understand how they can have the confidence to think that what they say would be believed.” He was particularly bothered by how Correa attacked Bellinger. “How can they say something like that to a person who has nothing to do with this, who doesn’t cheat, who became the MVP through hard work?” Darvish said. Darvish reflected on his time with the Dodgers, how the players, coaches and the front office came together in pursuit of the common

goal to win a World Series. “I think it’s disappointing how Correa’s words show not even a trace of respect toward that Dodgers team,” he said. “If I was on the Astros, I would apologize to the Dodgers and I would feel bad for players who lost their jobs as a result of our sign stealing. I think I would say I personally wasn’t worthy of the World Series title. “There’s not even a hint of that. If anything, it’s like they think that because they’ve been attacked, they should be left alone now.” Darvish wondered whether culture was a reason. “America has a culture of not saying sorry,” he said. “I think there are a lot of people who will never admit they’re wrong.” Darvish was also bothered by how often Astros players treated the commissioner’s report on their sign-stealing practices as a comprehensive document of their misdeeds. “They had a sign-stealing system others couldn’t even have imagined,” Darvish said. “If they want to hide the truth, I think they’re capable of hiding it easily.” And he thinks they might have. Darvish is skeptical the Astros stopped cheating in 2018, as the commissioner’s report stated. “If they didn’t get caught at that point, they would definitely continue it,” he said. “People who can ... maybe not sell their souls, but do something like that, I definitely

think they would do it again.” Darvish believes the 2017 championship is tarnished to where Astros players probably don’t enjoy their World Series rings. “It would be sad to look at it, wouldn’t it?” he said. Regardless of how the Astros feel about their jewelry, Darvish said it was important for MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to vacate the 2017 World Series championship. “In the Olympics, in amateur sports, if you cheat, you’re stripped of championships and you’re banned for a certain number of years,” he said. If MLB doesn’t take similar steps, he thinks teams will still have incentives to cheat. He pointed to how players continued to test positive for performance-enhancing substances after the league instituted a drug policy. He said that is because high-performing players are financially rewarded, regardless of whether they have flunked screenings. “MLB has to take the title,” he said. If the league doesn’t, Darvish believes the controversy will continue. “If that doesn’t happen, this doesn’t end,” Darvish said. “Fundamentally, that’s what everyone is really talking about.” A trophy valued by many people was stolen. The thieves shouldn’t be allowed to keep it.
