(Aidan Shaw/ The Penn) Stores like Walmart offer less expensive options for Valentine’s Day gifts.
News
With Valentine’s Day approaching, most college students don’t have an extended amount of money to spend on gifts for their significant others. Luckily, not all gifts need to be costly; they just have to come from the heart. If your special someone does happen to have a taste for expensive items and you don’t have money to splurge, there are ways that you can save money while still obtaining a gift they would enjoy. Don’t spend money on a storebought card. Not only are they informal, but you can make your own card for much cheaper. Even if you aren’t a skilled calligraphy artist, you can still put together a decent handmade card. The content inside the card is what counts. A heart-felt note inside the card means more than how the card looks on the exterior. Homemade gifts are the most inexpensive and meaningful to give. Coming up with ideas for a

good homemade gift isn’t always simple. A good place to search for gift concepts is Pinterest. The website is full of creative and whimsical pictures documenting people’s own ideas. A few homemade gifts that aren’t hard to make are picture collages, scrapbooks and personalized “open when” letters. Candy and chocolate are Valentine’s Day staple gifts. Even though they are the most gifted items, along with flowers, they don’t have to be super expensive. Stores like Walmart and Dollar Tree have Valentine’s Day chocolates and candies for low prices. Another fun food idea you can get your significant other is a box of heart-shaped donuts from Dunkin Donuts. They are enjoyable to both look at and eat. StoCombining a box of donuts with some flowers could be a perfect present. Speaking of flowers, Walmart is the cheapest place to get roses, compared to a florist and Martins. But roses aren’t the only plant you have to give on Valentine’s Day. Succulents are a fun
and easy-to-maintain plant that has become very popular. When students order a Chegg textbook, they also receive coupons with their book. One of these coupons is $25 for Shutterfly. The Shutterfly website has tons of products, like canvas prints, pillows and blankets, photo collage books and other items personalized with your own photos. Many items you can get for fewer than $25, too, ensuring that you won’t have to pay anything except probably shipping. T.J. Maxx is the best place to go if you are seeking a more high-end gift. For girls, the store has fine jewelry, perfume and bath items. For guys, they have wallets, belts and cologne. The clothes they have are also high quality for low prices. Stuffed animals ranging in sizes and prices are available at Walmart. The price for huge stuffed animals, like llamas, dogs and zoo animals, is cheaper than expected. Walmart also has a wide variety of fun décor items too for the holiday, like plates, napkins, banners and crafts.

Students weigh in on validity of Valentine’s Day HEATHER BAIR
Lead Culture Writer H.Bair@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
Valentine’s Day has always been a holiday to celebrate love, but now the holiday’s intentions are being questioned. Every February, the stores start decorating in shades of red and pink. Everywhere you look, hearts hang from ceilings, stuffed animals bear hearts and cute little sayings and chocolate can be found in abundance. People spend unnecessary amounts of money to show those whom they love their true feelings. But now, the question of whether Valentine’s Day is a beautiful holiday or a complete scam is rattling around the minds of those on campus. “I think it’s a way for stores and companies to get more money by exploiting something we all feel – love – by making a specific day devoted to it,” Cohen Wildeson (senior, nursing) said. “It
just means that we spend copious amounts of money showing our love for someone when it’s not really necessary.” You can show someone you love how you feel about them any day of the year, rather than just one singular day, Wildeson said. “Definitely a scam,” Anna Mechling (junior, sociology and journalism and public relations) said. “It wasn’t a holiday or anything special until the card companies created it to in-
crease their profits. I think there are great elements that make it a fun holiday to celebrate, but the bottom line is that it was originally started to boost a company’s sales.” Ignoring the aspect of spending the large amounts of money, it would seem like a fun holiday to show someone how you feel about them. “The commercial side of it is a scam, but it’s what you make of it,” Jonathan Eckert
(freshman, history) said. “Just spend some fun times with your partner doing what you two want. If you want to get each other gifts, that’s great, but you don’t have to.” It becomes apparent that Valentine’s Day has two sides: a commercial side and a genuine side. The commercial side – started by companies, of course – is out to make money. It’s almost as if companies are saying, “if you don’t spend all your mon-
ey on your significant other, you don’t love them,” which should not be the basis for a relationship. However, looking at Valentine’s Day in a different light makes it appear to be not so bad after all. Valentine’s Day can be a day where you show someone how much you love them and how much you care. If you’re looking for something that’s not as grand as companies would like, forget the big displays of affection. A simple card, or maybe even a simple gesture, can brighten someone’s day, whether it’s Valentine’s or not.

Local stores offer lots of love this Valentine’s Day EMILY LOOSE
Lead News Writer E.D.Loose@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
Valentine’s Day is close by, which means it is time to go out and get that special someone a gift. Sometimes, it can be difficult to know where to start. Instead of going all out, maybe try a tradition, such as flowers and chocolate. In Indiana, there are many more places to find flowers and chocolate than one may expect. Each place has a unique quality that may help figure out the perfect gift for the upcoming holiday. While everyone wants to make their love feel special, not everyone can afford big, fancy items. Walmart is still the best option for those who want to save money. There are dozens of choices on chocolate boxes and other types of candy. They may range in price anywhere from $1 to more than $40. Flowers at Walmart can range from small and simple to large and colorful, but they can still be found for a low price. At this time of year, Walmart is bound to have an array of roses alongside its usual floral selection.
(James Neuhausel/ The Penn) Dan Smith’s Candies and Gifts has everything from candy bars to gift baskets.
Gardner’s Candies at 1470 Indian Springs Road is another hot spot for chocolate. Known for its Peanut Butter Meltaways, Gardner’s is a Pennsylvania classic. Though it is more expensive than a lot of other candy stores, it is not as widely distributed, giving it a fresher quality. Because it has a case set up of its various chocolates, it is possible
to make a custom box. Depending on choices, it may get pricey, but the quality makes up for it. For a more local feel, Dan Smith’s Candies and Gifts on Philadelphia Street is one of five locations for the company. Selling everything from candy bars to gift baskets, it offers ideas for a variety of costs. Once selections are made, it offers to
gift wrap the box. If you’re looking to take someone out on a date, it also offers custard, the company’s original creation. Dan Smith’s does not sell flowers, but there are plenty of flower shops in Indiana to help out. Indiana Floral & Flower Boutique is on Warren Road but can also be found online. The boutique has both prearranged and
customizable flower bouquets. It can add chocolates or balloons as a way to make the flowers look even more extravagant. It also delivers. With an array of options and flexible prices, this is a good choice for those who want to make their gifts a little more special. Indiana Flower & Floral Boutique can be contacted on their website at https://www.indianapaflowers.com. Another option for any Valentine’s Day needs is the Flower Gallery Balloons of Indiana. As the only family owned florist in Indiana, it considers itself part of the “heart of Downtown Indiana.” Along with flowers, it is known for its balloon bouquets and characters, which could make a tradition of flowers on Valentine’s Day even more memorable. The gallery offers same-day delivery. More information can be found at https://flowergalleryindianapa.com. There are many other stores that offer these deals, but the ones above make a starting point for those who do not know where to go. Valentine’s Day is only around the corner, so getting started now will be beneficial in the long run.
OPINION
Pay attention, voters, as 2020 election creeps closer Now that 2019 is officially in full swing, anticipation for the 2020 presidential election is beginning to build. Plenty of people are excited to take their shot at knocking Donald Trump out of office, preventing the Republican from earning a second term. This is obvious when you look at the potential Democratic candidates who are searching for the nomination, with nine candidates already declaring their candidacy and two exploratory committees active, none of which include the big names in the party who are still mulling runs. Former vice president Joe Biden appears to have the most support in polling among the party and aligns with the current theme of older potential presidents; the Scranton native is 76, while Trump is 72, and the progressive hero Bernie Sanders is 77. Sanders took the country by storm in 2016 and was admired by many who seek a “political revolution,” one which they might have a better chance of finding when taking into consideration the events of the current administration. Throughout the past few decades, the elected president has swung like a pendulum back and forth. If a Republican

candidate is elected, a Democrat comes next, or vice versa. With Sanders’ fanbase in 2016 just as passionate as Trump’s, you never know what can happen. Many of those fans also support Beto O’Rourke, who came out of almost nowhere and nearly defeated Republican Ted Cruz in Texas. Let that one sink in, and it will show just how popular O’Rourke, who was recently interviewed in Times Square by Oprah
herself, could be on a national scale. But none of those guys are running yet, so let’s focus on who is. Cory Booker’s name has been floated for years as a potential presidential candidate, and the senator from New Jersey has officially thrown his name into the hat. Former housing secretary Julian Castro and Elizabeth Warren, another popular candidate among progressives, will also seek the nomination in an election which will certainly feature a record number of female candidates in search of a nomination across the board. In the Democratic party alone, five women have already declared their intentions to run. Kamala Harris, former attorney general of California, is currently the polling leader in a straw poll of democratic activists. Tulsi Gabbard was the first American Samoan and first Hindu member of Congress but may be harmed by previous views against the LGBTQ community. Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and “spiritual author and counselor” Marianne Williamson have also announced their candidacies. Despite the great deal of impressive to semi-interesting candidates, it certainly appears that the fate of everyone’s candidacy
revolves around Hillary Clinton. While there have been no official announcements from her camp, reports in The Wall Street Journal and other sources have said that the infamous former First Lady has a desire to throw her name back into the hat. With the Democratic National Committee appearing to favor Clinton in 2016, this becomes very dangerous for any Democratic candidate as well as anyone who wants to vote Trump out. With so many potential candidates ranging on just about every scale of the party, the Democrats must be careful to not end up with another situation like 2016. While they will likely remain lucky in the facet of third parties not gaining much steam, the party will need to build on its momentum from the 2018 midterms, in which they won control of the House, and ensure they do their due diligence in the many debates which will begin this summer. The fate of their party, and the fate of the country, could depend on it.

Tributes bring young and old acts together at Grammys HEATHER BAIR
Lead Culture Writer H.Bair@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
This article contains opinion. With a tribute to Motown, Dolly Parton and even that oldtime rock ‘n’ roll, the 61st Grammy Awards brought everyone together for a fun-filled night. The Grammy Awards, which are awarded to those who excel above and beyond in the music industry, brought a night of laughs, cheers and even a few tears. With performances by Lady Gaga, Dolly Parton, Janelle Monet, Alicia Keys, Dan + Shay and many more, the night was filled with exceptional music. Host Alicia Keys was joined onstage by Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and former First Lady Michelle Obama. The group delivered an inspirational opening speech, reminding watchers that no matter where or who we are, music can bring us together. One of the best performances of the night was delivered by an interesting duo, Shawn Mendes and Miley Cyrus, singing Mendes’ song, “In My Blood.” Cyrus, who’s been out of the limelight since her marriage to Liam Hemsworth, appears to be making a comeback. With Cyrus’ original country roots accompanying Mendes’ smooth vocals, the duet brought viewers into a new light of the popular
8
song. A tribute to Dolly Parton went underway with Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Little Big Town and Cyrus singing together. Cyrus accompanied Parton herself in a performance of “Jolene,” but it was not the first time the two performed that song together, and hopefully it would not be the last. Janelle Monet gave a jaw-dropping performance but not in the way you think. She performed her song “Make Me Feel,” which the audience seemed to enjoy. Yet, her oversexualized dance moves were something to be questioned. The song seemed to resemble Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.” Awards were given throughout the night, with Lady Gaga winning “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” with Bradley Cooper for the song “Shallow” from their movie, “A Star is Born.” Gaga accepted the award on both her and Cooper’s behalves, stating Cooper was in the U.K. at the time, but “I know he’d love to be here.” Later in the night, Gaga gave a live performance of “Shallow” to a tear-filled audience that sang along to every word. Musgraves, Gaga and Childish Gambino were the frontrunners in this year’s Grammy’s, with Musgraves winning “Best Country Album” and Gambino winning Song of the Year with “This is America.”

(Facebook) Places to stream movies over the Valentine’s Day holiday include Netflix (left) and Amazon (right).
Snuggle up with your significant other with these movies JEREMY STOUT
Staff Writer J.W.Stout2@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
This article contains opinion. It’s February, love is in the air, hearts are everywhere and movies are available on a multitude of streaming platforms. So, here’s a list of the movies I’d recommend you watch this Valentine’s Day with your partner or a bottle of wine to drink away the loneliness.
riences of last year. The film centers around two assistants (Glenn Powell and Zoey Deutch) who have nightmare bosses (Taye Diggs and Lucy Liu), so they engineer it so their bosses start hooking up, allowing them to have some free time. Surprise, surprise, they fall in love with each other at the end. The cast is fun and likeable. Lucy Liu is amazing as always. The jokes land, and the romance is as sweet as you could want. It’s the perfect romcom to throw on.
Maybe workplace romance isn’t your thing. That’s OK because Netflix also released a surprisingly good teen romcom last year, too. Based on a book of the same name, “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” follows Lara Jean (Lana Condor), a precautious high school student who writes private love letters to the various boys that she has had crushes on. One day her little sister (Anna Cathcart) sends out the letters to all the boys, so many boys, including Lara’s older sister’s ex. Hijinks, hilarity and romance ensue. Condor instills Lara Jean with a wonderful, sweet, awkward energy that makes this movie work. It’s the best teen film that I’ve seen in ages, and I would highly recommend it to you this fine holiday.
(Greg Kinnear). He learns to love through the help of these people and an adorable dog. It offers enough of the Brooks moments to be a fun watch, and Nicholson and Hunt are great together. So even though it’s not the best Brooks’ movie or the best difficult-people Nicholson romantic comedy (“Something’s Gotta Give” takes that position), it’s a worthwhile watch on Valentine’s Day.

This movie isn’t James L. Brooks’ best, but it’s far from his worst. (I’ll never get over watching “How Do You Know.”) It’s a comfortable middle point in the Brooks canon. Its about an OCD author (Jack Nicholson), who happens to also be a raging a$$hole, as he gets entangled in the lives of a stressed single mother (Helen Hunt) and his gay neighbor
ron (played by Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes at different points in his life), a young, black, gay man growing up in a bad part of Miami. The film goes through the process of accepting oneself as queer and rekindling a romance from the past when both individuals are in completely different places.

It’s one of my favorite movies of all time, and while being a heavier movie than anything else on this list, it is still an incredibly sweet movie that deals with self-acceptance, race and poverty in thoughtful and important ways. This article contains opinion. Feb. 14 is the day gamers and nerds everywhere stereotypically fear and despise. However,
gaming can be a wonderful way to spend time with a significant other, or even a best friend. So this is going to be a list of five games I recommend playing with your better half on Valentine’s Day. Other online lists may recommend dating-themed games like “Dream Daddy” or “Doki Doki Literature Club,” but this list
will be focusing on ways to spend time with your partner, instead of games about finding new ones. Relationships are like teams, sometimes you must work together to accomplish common goals; sometimes you get frustrated with each other and maniacal AI want to kill you and burn your remains. That last part is key to a healthy

relationship, which is why I strongly recommend the Co-Op levels of “Portal 2.” “Portal 2’s” Co-Op is iconic: two-player puzzles full of charm, wit, goofy robots, explosions, teambuilding and playful competition. If lightspeed portal-hopping and high-fiving in front of a maniacal supercomputer can’t bring a couple closer, nothing can. If cute and goofy robots aren’t cute enough for you two to bond, then let me introduce you to “Snipperclips” for the Nintendo Switch. “Snipperclips” is an adorable co-operative game in which two pieces of paper with the ability to cut parts off themselves and each other must work together to form shapes and solve puzzles. This colorful, casual, adorable and whimsical romp allows for its players to work together as a strong team, while also allowing for ways to playfully annoy your partner by changing their or your shape at the last minute. Keeping up the pattern of cuteness is the Wii classic “Kirby’s Epic Yarn.” “Kirby’s Epic Yarn” is an adorable and relatively easy game with colorful worlds, an adorable art style and fun co-operative gameplay that allows players to explore, team up and work together to solve problems. Whether you’re looking at the pink puff himself, Prince Fluff, or enemies like Waddle Dee, everything in this game is too cute not to win some points with the significant other. Keeping up the pattern of co-operation is the least cute
game on this list, “Keep Talking and No One Explodes” (KTNOE) on the Switch. In KTNOE, each player has a role in trying to defuse and survive a live bomb. One player has pages of information on how to defuse the bomb but is unable to see or interact the bomb. The other player has the bomb sitting before them and can touch its many parts but has no information on how to defuse the situation. The two players must work together to cut the correct wires, press the right buttons and solve the puzzles correctly before the bomb blows them both sky high. This game is a double-edged sword for couples. While it may cause a lot of stress and conflict if you struggle with the game, teamwork on this scale can always bring people together. The final game I recommend is one of the most well-known games of all time and continues the theme of playful competition, teambuilding and adorable aesthetics. “Minecraft” is perfect for a couple to play together in a private world. With its ambient world, creative potential, cute animals and need for resources to survive, no game can bring people together closer than “Minecraft.” Whether you are building your perfect dream home out of dirt blocks, taming your seventh dog or working together to survive a dark mineshaft, no game can bring people together closer than Mojang’s classic Lego simulator experience.

Classic Rock Conspiracy:
Was Love an overlooked subject in Cobain’s case? JAKE SLEBODNICK
Production Manager J.C.Slebodnick@iup.edu @slebby24
This article contains opinion. More than two-and-a-half decades ago, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain was found dead in his home with a self-inflicted shotgun wound in his head. The singer had a history of mental troubles, as well as some tensions with his wife, Courtney Love, which many think played a factor in his suicide. The case behind his death has been closed for years, but should it be reopened? New evidence surrounding the conspiracy points the metaphoric finger at Love, who, just before Cobain’s untimely death, was removed from his will. He was staying in a rehab facility to help with his drug usage but checked out just days before he took his own life. Love hired a private investigator, Tom Grant, to track down the Nirvana vocalist/guitarist just shortly after he checked out of rehab. With the hiring of a P.I. and a marriage already down the drain, it makes for a nice theory that Love planned to either have Cobain murdered, or she could have taken matters into her own hands. One final theory that has been a hot subtopic of his death was whether he could’ve been mentally and physically able to not only write a suicide note but also to load and
pull the trigger with an almost fatal ingestion of heroin just before he died. The autopsy showed that Cobain was under the influence of an illegal substance (later determined as heroin), and with something that could heavily impact the senses, there should have been no way that Cobain could have pulled the trigger on himself. Going back to Cobain’s will, he and Love had a couple’s lawyer, Rosemary Carroll, who remembered that Cobain had gone behind Love’s back to take her off his will. Love set out to find the nastiest divorce lawyer possible. So why does this bit of information play into his death? Money. Love saw the amount that Kurt was bringing in due to his success in the music industry, and she wanted a little piece of the pie. When she caught wind of her removal from his will, she realized her inheritance was being stripped from her. So why would she sit still and take this? Now this is where we can have some fun. Love knew that the removal wasn’t finalized until a later date. Cobain died a few weeks after this incident, leaving his possessions and money to Love. I’m not saying she did it, but with the reasons laid forth, how can one say that she’s an innocent party? I guess you could say there’s “Something in the Way” clearing the reputation “About a Girl.”

“Experimental,” “daring,” “refreshing.” That’s how Pittsburgh Music Magazine described Pittsburgh-based band Suavity’s Mouthpiece. The band began in 2008 and is made up of members J. Trafford (vocals), Meredith Bigatel (bass guitar), Nick Bigatel (guitar) and Brian Zalewski (drums). Unlike many bands who randomly come up with a band name, the name Suavity’s Mouthpiece came from a dream, according to Meredith Bigatel. “We all had the same dream one night about a jazz musician taking the mouthpiece off of his baritone saxophone and repeatedly throwing it at us and asking for it back,” Meredith Bigatel said. “It's been a recurring nightmare I've had every night before a show now.” Five albums later, the band has made its mark on the Pittsburgh music scene. “They truly are a band that one needs to experience,” Pittsburgh Music Magazine said. The band has an eclectic sound that listeners most likely have not heard before. Meredith Bigatel describes the
band’s music to be “experimental, unusual and definitely worth experiencing in person,” while Nick Bigatel describes it as “anti-pop post-punk.” Punk music is a major musical influence for the band. “I was always drawn to punk as a whole, but being around better musicians has also influenced me to try to become a better musician myself,” Meredith Bigatel said. “My brother (Nick) was the person who first encouraged me to pick up a bass, and J. recruited me in high school for SM.” Trafford said he is a big fan of independent artists Alex Walsh, Loosely Defined and Andrew Muse, and he says they are major musical influences to him. In 2019, the band plans to record new songs. Trafford says that about four new songs have been written. When it comes to writing songs, Trafford is the mastermind behind them all. “I write for Meredith, Nick and Brian, incidentally, as people,” he said. “Between 2014 and 2017, when I wasn’t able to sing for Suavity’s Mouthpiece, I found it very difficult to know what to do with myself writing-wise.” The band aims to play at least one show a month, usually in Pittsburgh, which Trafford describes as
“the happiest place on Earth.” Nick Bigatel said his favorite part about being in the band is “vision and dental,” while Trafford’s favorite part is “exclusive access to the Pittsburgh DIY Music Country Club.” All jokes aside, Meredith Bigatel said that the band has been a major part of her life for more than 10 years. “It’s been great to have been a part of it for so long and to see how it’s grown and changed over time,” Meredith Bigatel said. Meredith Bigatel also said that the biggest challenged the band has faced has been coordinating practices and finding consistently dedicated band members. Her favorite song that’s been released is “I Get Abstract” and has always been one of her favorites to play live. Nick Bigatel’s favorite song is “Learn Some F****** Finesse.” When Suavity’s Mouthpiece isn’t playing shows, you can find Nick Bigatel, Zalewski and Meredith Bigatel playing music in another Pittsburgh band, Smokey Bellows. Meredith Bigatel also has a day job and freelances a jewelry business. Trafford said he always finds himself writing music in his spare time. The band’s next live show is Feb. 21 at Spirit in Pittsburgh. Follow the band on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Spotify for more information.

Close road win for women’s basketball in Erie BRAD O’HARA
Lead Sports Writer B.L.Ohara@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
The IUP women’s basketball team has now extended its winning streak to five games as it picked up another one against Gannon on the road. This win was IUP’s closest victory of the season as it came out on top, 66-52. Gannon came into the game with a losing record in the midst of an up-and-down season. Statistically, Gannon has the fifth-best defense in the conference. However, that defense is paired with the third-worst offense in the PSAC. With this being said, the Golden Knights have been able to pull off multiple upsets against the top teams in the conference, beating Edinboro, Seton Hill and Clarion. IUP started off the game strong like it has for most of the season. The Crimson Hawks made four of their first five shots and jumped out to an early 10-0 lead.
That is where IUP’s luck began to fade. To end the first quarter, IUP missed nine consecutive shots and lost almost the entirety of its lead. The second quarter had the same ups and downs that the first quarter had. The Crimson Hawks’ lead ranged anywhere from 10 points to two points as IUP ended the first half with just a three-point lead. In the third quarter, it appeared as if IUP may be on the verge of its second loss of the season as Gannon put up one of the largest challenges for the Crimson Hawks all season. After making two quick shots to start the quarter, IUP lost the entirety of its lead. Halfway through the third quarter, the Crimson Hawks were trailing for the first time in the game. The lead then went back and forth, changing four times with IUP taking a one-point lead with a last-second shot from Brittany Robinson (senior, education) to end the quarter. The fourth quarter is where the Hawks began to play the level
(IUP Athletics) Carolyn Appleby (senior, safety sciences) led the team Saturday with 23 points.
of basketball that we have seen from them all season. The biggest change for them was their ability to draw a foul and capitalizing on the free throws. IUP took 14 shots from the foul line and made 12 of them. The Crimson Hawks were also
strong defensively in the fourth quarter. They were able to force turnovers and out-rebound the Golden Knights. IUP was able to force seven turnovers in the fourth quarter alone and stole the ball four times.
In the first three quarters, Gannon turned the ball over 10 times. Rebounding was also in favor of IUP as it outrebounded Gannon nine to five in the fourth quarter. “Our focus defensively is to play in the gaps,” Ana Hollen (senior, kinesiology) said. “This stops penetration and protects our rim which makes it hard for teams to score. Our big thing is defending the three line. We don’t let teams get off enough threes, let alone make them to be able to beat us. But collectively as a group we take pride in our ability to defend. “We have really good post defense, help defense and pressure on the ball, so it makes it hard for teams to come in and run what they want.” The defensive switch allowed for IUP to get its fifth straight win. The team will travel to Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday to face off against the 12-11 (8-8 in the conference) Mountain Cats, who are on a two-game winning streak.
Men’s basketball stays red hot in win against Golden Knights JEFF HART

The IUP Crimson Hawks are looking unstoppable after their strong performance against the Gannon Golden Knights. IUP was feeling it all night as it shot more than 50 percent from the field and from the 3-point line. Some would have argued that the Crimson Hawks would have needed the fire department to cool them down because they seemed to be on fire offensively. It seems that their win against long-time rival Slippery Rock lit a blaze under them going into this game. On Saturday, both teams came out strong to start this matchup. The Crimson Hawks led 12-4 after buckets from Jacobo Diaz (senior, economics), Malik Miller (junior, communications media) and Dante Lombardi (senior, finance). The Golden Knights did not take this sitting down; they responded and went on a 13-3 run to come back against IUP. Going into the second half, IUP lead 33-28. IUP had six 3-pointers that helped put it ahead

of Gannon, especially considering the Crimson Hawks were shooting 52 percent from the field. Coming out of the second half, the Hawks went on an 11-1 run after a 3-pointer by Miller seemed to galvanize the squad. The closest
the Golden Knights got to a lead came later in the second half, when they bridged the gap and got the score to within six points. That was as close as they would get for the rest of this game. The Hawks put up another win, boosted their re-
cord to 21-2 and looked to start another win streak after this superb demonstration of eminence. In this brilliant matchup, we were able to see IUP firing on all cylinders. We were witnesses to the Hawks receiving copious produc-
tion from their squad. Miller, Diaz, Lombardi and Willem Brandwijk (senior, marketing) all put up double-digit points. Their elite production combined for 64 of IUP’s 78 points. This was yet another strong showing for an offensive prodigy in Miller, who put up an imposing 22 points to help compel his squad to take this game against the Golden Knights. With the playoffs getting closer, the Crimson Hawks appear to be playing some of their best basketball. The men’s team has shown true grit over the last few games, and they have exhibited extreme resilience in the eyes of adversity, bouncing back from heart-breaking losses. IUP currently sits at No. 6 in the nation, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. And with such a talent-latent group, the future looks incredibly bright for the Crimson Hawks’ playoff hopes. Pitt-Johnstown lies ahead for IUP Wednesday night. The Mountain Cats are 13-10 (8-8 in the conference) but have lost five of their last seven games.

Baseball opens season with trio of games in Tar Heel State JAKE SLEBODNICK
Production Manager J.C.Slebodnick@iup.edu @slebby24
The IUP baseball team looked to start the season off on a positive note when it traveled to Pembroke, N.C., to play a three-game set with the UNC Pembroke Braves this past weekend. Although it didn’t turn out the way the Crimson Hawks had expected, they didn’t suffer a threegame sweep either. On Saturday, both teams faced off in a doubleheader with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. IUP fell to UNC Pembroke in the first game 9-7 but came back in the second game 11-1 to even out the series. Three errors in the first game ultimately led to their defeat in that one. Catcher Matt Swartz (redshirt senior, business) tallied his first double and his first home run of the year, while also contributing two RBIs and three hits. The game was tied headed into the sixth inning, and SP Nick Kuhn (redshirt sophomore, psychology) surrendered three runs, which proved to be the deciding factor as the game progressed.
(IUP Athletics) Matt Swartz (redshirt senior, business) hit .400 with three RBIs in a three-game series at UNC Pembroke.
The second game was a complete turnaround for IUP. The Crimson Hawks battled for five early runs and allowed only one run the entire game, which led to IUP handing the Braves their first loss of the season. SP Jeff Allen (senior, criminology) looked dominant on the mound, going five full innings, earning sev-
en strikeouts and allowing just a mere three hits in his outing. Graduate closer Mike Klingensmith (kinesiology) shut the door to earn his first save of the season. The power-hitting trio of Chris Eisel (junior, college of natural science and mathematics), Colin Williams (sophomore, management),
and Ty Diehl (freshman, kinesiology) contributed one home run in the 13-hit onslaught produced by IUP. This gave a dramatic setting heading into Sunday’s rubber match. What looked to be a promising game turned out to be one that IUP
would like to put behind them, as they suffered a monstrous blowout, 22-3, by Pembroke. Tyler Adams (criminology), a junior starter, put up three strong innings but had no defensive support to back up his efforts. The Crimson Hawks racked up seven errors in the game, which broke open the floodgates for the Braves as they were able to put up nine runs in the first four innings played. INF Nick Hess (freshman, marketing) displayed signs of life as he went 2-3 with a home run and a double in the game. The Braves ran up the scoreboard, posting 13 runs in the last three innings, ultimately leading to a decimating 22-3 defeat of IUP. IUP starts out the season 1-2, while UNC Pembroke improves to 5-1. The Crimson Hawks will stay in the Tar Heel State, taking the field next in the “Weekend at Holly Springs,” where they will play Le Moyne (2/15), St. Anselm (2/16) and PSAC rival East Stroudsburg (2/17). Defensive improvements look to be the main focus in the coming weeks, but with a lot of season ahead, we should expect to see some competitive baseball soon.

NBA trade deadline prepares contenders for postseason action
15
JAKE ROUSE
Staff Writer J.A.Rouse3@iup.edu @ThePennIUP
The clock struck “deadline” at 3 p.m. Thursday on the NBA calendar. ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was probably taking a well-deserved nap. “Woj” has been the source for trade information in the NBA since the dawn of time, it feels like. The trade deadline passed, and the dust of the week prior was left to settle. The frenzy of trades kicked off when the New York Knicks traded away former No. 4 overall pick Kristaps Porzingis, along with Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee and Trey Burke to the Dallas Mavericks. In return, the Knicks got Dennis Smith Jr., DeAndre Jordan, Jordan Matthews and two future second round draft picks. The 7-foot-3-inch unicorn with a jump shot (Porzingis, although still out recovering from an ACL tear) will pair up with fellow European and current front runner in the Rookie of the Year race, Luka Doncic. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban hopes the European duo will play for decades together in Dallas, considering Kristaps and Luka are 23 and 19 respectively. This trade didn’t just help the Mavericks future; it set up the Knicks to be big players in a loaded free-agency period this summer. The trade creates the potential of signing two players on July 1 to maximium contracts. With rumors of upcoming free agents Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving landing in New York swirling and holding on to a top pick in the draft, the Knicks are quietly sitting back smiling. For the first time in more than 15 years, LeBron James isn’t terrifying the Eastern Conference. Thus, teams with a shot of the Eastern Conference finals and NBA finals are trying to reassure their newfound shot at a championship. Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Toronto sit among the top five seeds in the Eastern Conference and were all players in some way on the trade deadline. Milwaukee, currently first in the East, traded away Thon Maker to the Detroit Pistons (after Maker reportedly wanted out) in exchange for Stanley Johnson. Milwaukee
(TNS) The Philadelphia 76ers acquired Mike Scott, Boban Marjanovic and Tobias Harris at the NBA trade deadline.
almost immediately traded Jason Smith and four second-round picks to the New Orleans Pelicans for Nikola Mirotic. Mirotic was an immediate help to the Pelicans when they added him following DeMarcus Cousins’ injury last season. The Bucks hope he can provide the same in Milwaukee as they push their way to the playoffs. Toronto was attempting to get Mike Conley and Marc Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies in a blockbuster deal before the deadline. The deal for both point guard and center fizzled out. Toronto was able to land part of the deal, however. Toronto sent Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright and C.J. Miles to Memphis in exchange for two-time All-NBA big man Marc Gasol. Toronto now has three All Stars
at one point in its starting lineup. Philadelphia officially decided to win this year. “The Process” is over, Philly. It’s been a long time coming. In November, Elton Brand, new GM of the 76ers, made a big move to add All-Star Jimmy Butler to the team, creating a big three of Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Butler. Even with the trade deadline looming, Brand was not done yet. In a six-man blockbuster deal, the Sixers sent Landry Shamet, Mike Muscala and Wilson Chandler to the Los Angeles Clippers for Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic and Mike Scott. Adding Tobias Harris to the starting lineup not only adds to the big three Philly had before the deal but creates a death lineup comparable to even the Golden State Warriors with DeMarcus Cousins.
But Brand wasn’t finished with his work before the deadline. Remember Markelle Fultz, the No.1 pick in the 2017 NBA draft by the 76ers whose been in and out of games since he became a pro, due to an indescribable change in his shoulder and jump shot form? Yeah, he’s gone now. Fultz was traded to the Orlando Magic for Jonathan Simmons and two future draft picks. There’s still hope for Fultz. The Magic don’t plan on rushing him, and they shouldn’t. After all, he is the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double, even amid his bizarre shoulder situation. In other NBA trade news, Harrison Barnes was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Sacramento Kings in the middle of a game. The Internet exploded with reac-
tions, and even King James took to Instagram about his thoughts on the mid-game trade. Although, it all seemed to be a bit of an overreaction. Harrison Barnes was informed a trade was in the works before the game began and was asked if he’d still like to play. He said yes. In return, the Mavericks received Justin Jackson and Zach Randolph. As for Pelicans superstar Anthony Davis, who requested a trade 10 days before the deadline, a deal was not completed. The Los Angeles Lakers threw everything and then some at the Pelicans to make a trade happen, but the Pelicans would not agree to a deal with the Lakers. As a result, Davis will continue to represent New Orleans until at least this summer.
