(The Penn archives) IUP’s Student Government Association held a meeting Thursday for students to share personal advising issues.

SGA discusses student advising issues MADELINE ROGERS Contributing Writer M.T.Rogers@iup.edu @ThePenn_IUP

(Katie Jo Campbell/ The Penn) IUP’s Student Government Association members Justin Hardin (senior, political science) and Colin Hale (junior, political science) tabled in the library to inform students of their advising options Wednesday.

IUP’s Student Government Association (SGA) held a town hall meeting for students Thursday to share personal advising experiences. Adrianna Branin, SGA senator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, created the Advising and Midterm Grading Committee at the beginning of this semester to help students that have had similar advising issues to the ones she had. “Last summer, shortly after I was elected to this role, I started to hear lots of issues with academic advising when talking to other IUP students,” Branin said. “How many advisers wouldn’t answer emails or made them take classes they never needed or couldn’t answer important questions about their degrees. That’s just to cherry pick a few. “And though there are many phenomenal advisers on this campus, there are some that have

dropped the ball on their responsibilities, and IUP students deserve consistency in the planning of their futures.” The group of SGA members working on the committee also includes Bryanna Troop, Bridget Pelosi, Justin Hardin, Alexander Fefolt, Anthony Krick, Karla Aguirre and Colin Hale. Students and deans in attendance took turns over the duration of the meeting to speak on both sides of the issue. Students shared personal stories of how some advisers set them back in their academic careers, and deans spoke during the meeting as well to sympathize with students and defend the academic advisers that are doing their jobs correctly. “We’ve made it really clear from the beginning that we don’t want any specific professors’ names said because we don’t want to demonize them, but at the same time, it is in their contract, and they have these responsibilities, and a lot of them are not adhering to them,” Branin said. “We’ll continue to include

faculty in this discussion. We really want to figure out a system that works for everyone.” The students that spoke at the town hall recognized and have experienced good advising as well during their time at IUP, and the discussion remained respectful between the students and deans. The committee intends to implement long-term change for students to eliminate advising issues entirely. In the meantime, senators handed out resource guides to students within the colleges they represent. The resource guides will help students figure out who to speak to in their departments if they’re experiencing advising issues. The committee is welcoming any student that is passionate about advising issues to join their movement toward a better advising future for IUP students. “I believe every student should have an adviser that is invested in their success, and I hope the work we do here and going forward helps that dream become a reality for IUP students,” Branin said.

The Capitol welcomed the late President George H.W. Bush to the rotunda for the last time on Monday, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell hailing the 41st president as a “humble” public servant who led based on a set of deeply held principles. McConnell recounted Bush’s lone Inauguration Day address, when he noted those in attendance had gathered at the Capitol, which Bush called “the front porch of democracy.” “A steady hand who stayed the course,” McConnell said of Bush, whom he noted kept piloting his plane in World War II after the plane was disabled by enemy fire, completing his mission run before bailing out. “George H.W. Bush steered this country as straight as he steered that airplane,” McConnell said. A military honor guard carefully carried Bush’s casket into the rotunda and placed it on the Lincoln catafalque, the same platform built and used during the funeral of Abraham Lincoln after the 16th president was assassinated. The honor guard soon moved into position around the casket, over which it will keep watch as the public and dignitaries pay their respects. Members of the House and Senate – from both parties – lined

up behind a red velvet rope to pay their respects. Eight of the nine Supreme Court justices stood together on the east side of the ornate room, with several Trump administration Cabinet members, including Defense Secretary James Mattis, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. White House Chief of Staff John Kelly stood behind Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Among the notable figures who entered just minutes before the casket and Bush family were James Baker, who was secretary of state under Bush, and Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the first Gulf War under Bush.

Sounds of the 21-gun salute outside rumbled through the rotunda. A military band played “Hail to the Chief” on the East Front driveway before Bush’s casket was carried up the stairs. A Navy sailor carrying a dark blue flag with the seal of the office of the presidency followed a few steps behind. The 41st president died Friday night in Houston. He long had

battled a form of Parkinson’s disease and been wheelchair-bound for years. Members of both parties have praised his decades of public service, from naval aviator to congressman to director of central intelligence to commander in chief. Bush will lie in state in the rotunda until Wednesday morning when his casket will be transported through the streets of the capital city to the National Cathedral of his state funeral service. Among those who will eulogize him is his son former President George W. Bush. In a television interview that aired Sunday evening, the 43rd chief executive predicted his father will one day be regarded as the “greatest one-term president” in American history. Vice President Mike Pence said Bush “never failed to answer the call of his country.” Bush’s 58 combat missions in World War II would have been “enough honor” for most, but Bush “was just getting started.” When Bush left office in early 1993, “he left the world a more peaceful and prosperous place,” the VP said. Speaker Paul D. Ryan began his remarks by declaring: “Here lies a great man.” “His life was hymn of honor. His legacy is grace perfected. His memory will belong to glory,” he said. “God bless the 41st president of the United States.”

Alaska’s earthquake was big, but it could have been much worse ALEJANDRA REYESVELARDE Los Angeles Times (TNS)

Buildings cracked. Roads collapsed. People were injured by falling debris. But for all the ferocity of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the Anchorage area Friday, it did not cause the catastrophic damage or loss of life that have occurred from even smaller quakes around the world, including California. Friday’s Alaska quake was larger in magnitude than the 1989 Loma Prieta quake and the 1994 Northridge quake, each of which killed more than 50 people and caused billions of dollars in damage. What was the difference? Experts emphasized they are still studying the Anchorage earthquake but said several factors made it less destructive than other major quakes. died as the harbor and docks collapsed. Eleven people were killed by a tsunami that hit Crescent City, Calif. What is the lesson for California? California has a long history of large earthquakes, and experts said the Anchorage destruction should be another warning to prepare. A similar-size earthquake around downtown L.A. would be much more destructive because the buildings are older and the area much more densely populated. “In the Los Angeles area there’s a much more extensive array of infrastructure throughout the city,” Tytell Said. “Up in Alaska, things are a little bit more rural, a little bit more spread out. But make no mistake, there is a city there.” Aside from the mighty San Andreas fault, Southern California is crisscrossed with smaller faults that pose major dangers, including the Newport-Inglewood fault, where the 1933 Long Beach quake erupted, and the Hollywood fault, which runs through the heart of Los Angeles. Another big concern is the Puente Hills thrust fault, which runs from near Whittier through downtown L.A., the University of Southern California and Dodger Stadium before veering west toward Beverly Hills.

(TNS) Disney said Monday it had made an agreement with chairman and chief executive Bob Iger to change his stock-based compensation to more closely reflect the success of the Burbank media giant’s share price.

Disney raises the bar for CEO’s stock bonus RYAN FAUGHNDER Los Angeles Times (TNS)

Walt Disney Co. just raised the bar for chairman and chief executive Bob Iger to earn his big pay day. Disney said on Monday it had made an agreement with Iger, 67, to change his stock-based com-

pensation to more closely reflect the success of the Burbank media giant’s share price following its acquisition of much of 21st Century Fox Inc. In December, Iger extended his contract to 2021 to oversee the company following its $71.3 billion deal to absorb a big chunk of Rupert Murdoch’s entertainment empire, which is expected to close

next year. Under terms of the contract, he is eligible to receive more than $100 million in stock units, depending on the company’s share price. But according to the new terms, Iger will earn the full 937,599 target amount of shares only if the company outperforms the bottom 65 percent of the firms on the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock market index, the company said in a regulatory filing. That’s up from the previous goal, which would have given Iger the full amount if the company did better than half the companies on the S&P 500. The deal comes after the company received blowback from shareholders over compensation earlier this year. In March, a majority of shareholders voted against Disney’s compensation plan in a non-binding rebuke against the firm. Disney paid Iger $36.3 million in total compensation in fiscal 2017. Disney’s executive pay plan was opposed by 52 percent of shareholders, with 44 percent in favor and 4 percent abstaining. Some proxy advisors had urged investors to vote against Disney’s executive pay plan, saying it was not sufficiently aligned with Disney’s performance. Disney said the company and Iger reached the agreement in

response to feedback from shareholders.

“The amendments to Mr. Iger’s contract establish more rigorous performance requirements for his equity award than those reflected in the original contract, further aligning Mr. Iger’s compensation with shareholder value creation,” Disney said in a statement. The new pay agreement comes at a time of increasingly high stakes for the company, which must figure out how to integrate Fox’s entertainment assets – including its movie and TV studios, and cable networks such as FX and National Geographic – into its own business. Disney is also placing a big bet on its upcoming subscription streaming service, dubbed Disney+, which is expected to include original content from Disney-owned studios including Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios, Pixar and

Walt Disney Animation Studios. The company is also expected to invest in programming for Hulu, of which it will own 60 percent after the Fox deal closes. All that increases the challenges for Disney and Iger, who is looking to establish his legacy by positioning Disney to thrive in an era of greater competition from tech companies including Netflix and Apple. In addition to establishing the higher stock price target, Iger’s new deal makes it so he will receive fewer shares than under the previous plan if Disney’s shares do not meet certain performance levels. For example, Iger will receive no shares if the company fails to outperform the bottom 25 percent of the S&P 500, whereas he would have earned 343,949 shares under the previous contract terms. At the 50th percentile, he’ll take home 585,999 units, compared to 687,898 shares previously. Disney’s stock price was little changed in midday trading on Wall Street, hovering at $115.15 a share on Monday. The company has delivered total shareholder return of 477 percent since Iger took over as chief executive in 2005, driven largely by successful acquisitions of companies such as Marvel Entertainment, Pixar Animation Studios and Lucasfilm.

(TNS) U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos speaks during a news conference at the Marriot Heron Bay in Coral Springs, Fla., in 2018. On Tuesday, DeVos warned an audience of a “crisis” of rising college student loan debt and defaults on student loans.

DeVos’ Title IX changes open for public comment ASIA FIELDS

The Seattle Times (TNS)

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has proposed narrowing schools’ obligations when it comes to responding to sexual misconduct. Starting Thursday, you can tell the U.S. Department of Education what you think about her desired changes to Title IX regulations. DeVos’ proposal is a departure from Obama-era guidance for Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits gender discrimination in schools that receive public funding. DeVos said these changes would make the process more fair to accused students and their schools. The proposal – leaked in September and officially released by the Education Department mostly unchanged this month – has been denounced by survivors and their advocates, who believe it will allow schools to avoid dealing with cases of sexual misconduct. Public comment opened Thursday and lasts for 60 days – meaning you have until about the end of January to share your thoughts. What are the changes? Schools would only be required to respond if an official report was made to them or if multiple complaints about the same person were made to an official with authority to respond. Under Obama, schools could be found in viola-

tion of their Title IX obligations for not responding to sexual misconduct if they knew or reasonably should have known about it. Schools also wouldn’t have to respond to off-campus incidents and the definition of sexual harassment would be narrower. Other controversial changes include allowing schools to use a higher standard of evidence and mediation for sexual-misconduct cases, as well as requiring cross-examination by advisers during hearings. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., ranking member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee called on DeVos to withdraw the proposal at a Wednesday news conference in Washington, D.C. “Secretary DeVos’ proposed rule will return us to a time when sexual-assault survivors were ignored and felt like they had nowhere to turn,” she said. “It is clear from this rule that Secretary DeVos did not listen.” Murray is also supporting calls to extend the public comment period. Sexual assault survivors and advocates – including a survivor of ex-gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and a 14-year-old who said she was sexually assaulted by a peer – joined Murray. Jess Davidson, executive director of End Rape on Campus, said she went through the Title IX

process in college. She said her perpetrator was found responsible, but not until after graduation. Because of how long her case took, she said she walked across the graduation

stage the same day he did. “While the system was really flawed for me, I was grateful that there was an alternative system I could turn to,” Davidson said, explaining that she didn’t want to

go to law enforcement. Davidson said she and other advocates have been working to improve the Title IX process for survivors, and that DeVos’ changes would roll back that progress.

Professional football assault scandal arises...again Fantasy football group messages blew up Friday after TMZ released a video of Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt getting into a physical altercation with a woman back in February. The Chiefs reported later in the day that they were releasing Hunt. The video, which did not include any audio, showed Hunt and the woman screaming at each other with a few other people attempting to hold them apart. Hunt pushed the woman, and she hit him across the face. The video goes on to show pushing and shoving of everyone involved, and eventually the woman ends up on the floor, only to be kicked over by Hunt. It’s a scandal, but it’s nothing new. Ray Rice. LeSean McCoy. Ray McDonald. Do you want us to continue? Because we can. Domestic violence is most likely the first thing that would come to your mind if you heard an NFL player was arrested. According to ESPN, many team owners are upset at the lack of involvement the league had in the investigation of the assault when it first happened. Hunt told EPSN in an exclusive interview with Lisa Salters Sunday that the NFL never questioned him. Have we really normalized assaults involving NFL players just because they’re

rich and tackle people for a living? The NFL in a statement Sunday said it “continues to pursue a complete understanding of the facts” and its investigation would “include further attempts to speak to the complainants involved.” Hunt has shown remorse for his actions and publicly apologized. The 23-year-old led the NFL in rushing with 1,327 yards last season as a rookie and was fifth in rushing this season with 824 yards. With the Chiefs being the No. 1 seed in the AFC and having a 9-2 record,

Hunt’s is a heart-breaking story to hear from all aspects. What many professional athletes seem to forget is that once they sign their contracts, all eyes are on them. They are now public figures, and it is their responsibility to cool themselves off whenever their emotions start to get the better of them. One small move can cost them their career and their millions. Now, not only have they destroyed their personal lives, but they have also obliterated their professional careers. Once a domestic abuse scandal hits the

media, that player becomes a public relations liability that no organization wants to have to deal with. Many news organizations are saying what everyone has known all along: winning is greater than every other factor. Hunt was accused of a second assault this past summer. All the hard work to play in college, all the time and effort marketing themselves to potential NFL teams, is wasted on a heated moment and can never be taken back. Instead of being known as an exceptional running back, Hunt will fall into the category of just another has-been football player who screwed up his life because of aggressions that should have been left on the field. As for the NFL, the league is digging itself into a hole in which it allows some players to come back after physically assaulting another human being but dismisses a player who makes a political statement by kneeling. The Hunt case is embarrassing for the sport as a whole, and the NFL must do better moving forward.

Coffee, friends and acoustic music — that is what Unplugged, an acoustic live music event hosted by the student-run radio station WIUP-FM is all about. The event ran from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at The Artists Hand. Performers included local Indiana musicians Kevin Byars, Alyssa Hankey, Nate Janov and Longtime Nevada. Byars started off the night with an untitled song he wrote about free speech. His gruff vocals and folk-style guitar playing meshed well together, along with his clever lyrics about America’s lack of gun control. He then covered a Neil Young song, accompanied by acoustic guitar and harmonica. Byars’ acoustic guitar is from 1969, and one of the strings broke during another unnamed original song. Janov let Byars borrow his acoustic guitar so he could finish off his set. Byars’ got the crowd clapping along to his rendition of “Night Moves” by Bob Seger. He finished off his set with a cover of “Oh! Darling” by The Beatles.

December 4, 2018

Byars is also in a classic rock cover band “8-Track Daze” and is a DJ for WIUP-FM. Hankey won the crowd over with her raspy, Janis Joplin-sounding voice. The singer-songwriter played an original song titled “1968,” a song about life in the 1960s. Hankey’s guitar strap was adorned with a small peace sign button. Hankey shared with the crowd that she had toured across the country last summer and that she has an obsession with Bruce Springsteen before she played a cover of his song “Dancing in the Dark.” She then played an original song titled, “I Went Rambling,” accompanied by acoustic guitar and harmonica. Janov was less classic-rock sounding than the previous performers. His voice sounded more poppunk, but it paired well with his acoustic guitar. He played an original song titled “Piety,” which he said has a deep meaning to him. “I recently have started believing in a higher power,” Janov said. “Which if you know me, you know that is very unlike me.” Janov then played “House Warning Party,” a fast-paced song,

by indie rock band Joyce Manor. “The thing about Joyce Manor is that they made a whole career out of songs that are a minute and a half long,” Janov said. “If that’s not punk rock, I don’t know what is.” One of the highlights of the evening was when Janov played a cover of “Mario Kart Love Song” by Sam Hart. The song uses clever lyrics that pay homage to the classic video game such as “You be my princess and I’ll be your Toad/ I’ll follow behind you on rainbow road.” Throughout his set, Janov looked down at a napkin, which is where he wrote down the songs for his setlist. Longtime Nevada, the only band at the event, closed off the night with a set filled with original songs such as “Sunday Mourning,” “Abby Rose” and “Thin Line.” The trio creates acoustic songs with catchy melodies accompanied by skillful guitar and cajon playing. A cajon is a box-shaped percussion instrument played by slapping the front of the instrument with hands or fingers. WIUP-FM hosts the Unplugged event once a year during the fall semester. (Ashley Lutz/ The Penn) America’s Got Talent finalist Samuel J. Comroe performed Thursday in the Hadley Union Building (HUB) Ohio Room.

Comedian Comroe has audience in tears during stand-up set CODY MINICH

Staff Writer C.S.Minich@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

After being introduced by STATIC (The Student Activity Committee), comedian Samuel J. Comroe walked on stage. He was greeted by a loud applause from the near full-capacity Hadley Union Building (HUB) Ohio Room. Comroe is a stand-up comedian with Tourette’s syndrome who is widely known for his performance on the competitive reality show, America’s Got Talent. Comroe opened his set by thanking the audience for coming, and he promptly started poking fun at IUP’s campus. “Nobody warned me that your campus is a maze,” Comroe said. While the comedian is well known for his appearance on America’s Got Talent, a family friendly show on NBC, he was not shy about swearing at the campus. During his set, Comroe mentioned that AGT would cen-

sor some of his content. He said that as a comedian, half of the job was writing jokes. This only became more difficult when he would be told he could not say half of his material and would have to write more material. “You don’t think I swear because I was on AGT, but I lost to an Asian magician,” Comroe said. “So I swear now.” To get the audience more involved, Comroe opened his show up for questions. The audience enjoyed feeling more involved in the show. One audience member asked him when he knew he wanted to do stand up. “I was 17 in high school, I asked my principal, and he said yes,” Comroe said. Another audience member asked Comroe about when he performed his first stand-up set. “I was 17 in high school, I asked my principal, and he said yes,” Comroe repeated. During his time on the stage, Comroe covered many different topics. He talked about his time

on AGT, about Tourette’s syndrome, about his daughter and life on the road touring. As his set finished, he informed everyone that he would be doing a meet and greet after the show and invited the audience to come take photos with him. Comroe, however, did have one caveat. “It’s flu season,” Comroe said. “Don’t shake my hand.” Daniel Gennaro, a masters student studying public affairs, said that he hadn’t heard of Comroe before, but was excited to see a comedian preforming at the HUB. “I wish they brought more comedians in,” Gennaro said. “He was comical, man. He said some things we could probably all relate to.” The audience was not only filled with students and IUP staff. Indiana townsfolk were also present at the event. Kevin Davis, an Indiana resident, and his family all enjoyed the comedian’s set. “We knew about him from

America’s Got Talent,” Davis said. “We had seen him there. We usually don’t come to STATIC events,

but we wanted to come to this one. Anyone who didn’t come tonight really missed out.”

Here's less-than-super news for fans of Netflix's "Daredevil." The TV series centering on Marvel's crime-fighting superhero will not be brought back for a fourth season, Netflix announced. "We are tremendously proud of the show's last and final season and although it's painful for the fans, we feel it is best to close this chapter on a high note," reads a statement from the streaming service. The cancellation comes one month after the premiere of the third season. Netflix also thanked Marvel, as well as the show's fans, cast and crew and Season 3 showrunner, for their support and contributions to the series. "While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years

to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel," Netflix said. Many fans were disappointed by the cancellation, including one with the Twitter handle @mattsmirkdock who seemed caught off guard by the news. "I like actually don't know what to say about the daredevil cancellation I'm so upset," he tweeted. Another user, @arolacroix, shared a similar sentiment, writing, "I'm so genuinely sad about daredevil I can't believe this." Amy Rutberg, an actress who played Marci on the show, acknowledged that the news left her shook up as well. "Heartbroken and surprised. But what a helluva way to go out!" she tweeted, before tagging two of the people who served as showrunners for the series. "Thank you @stevendeknight and @erikoleson. I will miss Marci terribly but so proud to have

played in your world.” The series, which premiered in 2015, starred Charlie Cox as Daredevil, a blind attorney in New York City who suited up at night as a vigilante in Hell's Kitchen. Other stars of "Daredevil" included Deborah Ann Woll, Rosario Dawson and Elden Henson. Netflix last month announced the cancellation of a pair of other Marvel series, "Luke Cage" and "Iron First," after two seasons each. Those shows, along with "Daredevil," served as three of the four series that led to Netflix's "The Defenders" series about a Marvel crime-fighting alliance. Of the four, only "Jessica Jones" remains now. "Daredevil" was the first of those series. The Daredevil character was created by Stan Lee and artist Bill Everett and made his comic-book debut in 1964. Ben Affleck previously portrayed the character in a 2003 film adaptation centering on the hero.

(Facebook) The 1975 released its third studio album “A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships” Friday.

The 1975 welcomes new album, ‘A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships’ EMILEE HOWELLS

Contributing Writer E.M.Howells@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. The 1975 has returned with its third studio album, “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships.” The English pop-rock band produced an album looking into the theme of how “modernity has failed us,” and made the album essentially a “call out” to society. In July of 2017, The 1975 announced an end of an era with its second album, “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it.” The band had just gotten off of its two-year tour with this album and decided it was time for a break. They let fans know they would be back on June 1, and then followed by deleting its account on social media. The band returned to social media in April, announcing that the album would be called “A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships.” Then, on June 1, it released its first single from the album, “Give Yourself a Try.” This song was written to the targeted audience of millennials on how you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself.

The lead vocalist, Matty Healy, struggles with drug abuse and explored his journey overcoming it in this song. The band later released another song, titled “Love It If We Made It.” This song went back to the theme of how “modernity has failed us.” This song is labeled as a protest song and a wake-up call to society. It has two lyrics pulling directly from President Trump’s Twitter feed and lists everything the band thinks is wrong in the world today. Although the album has some “angsty” vibes, it also has a softer side with songs like “Be My Mistake” and “I Couldn’t Be More in Love.” This shows a more relaxed side of the album with songs about love and feelings. When thinking back to the title of this album, they decided to dive into society’s relationship with the Internet and how it is involved in everything we do. The most interesting song in this album is titled “The Man Who Married a Robot.” It is not necessarily a song, but a Siri-like voice talking through a story. It is about a lonely man who just turns to the internet and essentially falls in love with the Internet itself. The album is much different from its previous two albums, but the band always has consistent

themes and sound throughout each album. This album came with a new

story for the band, but it is only one of two albums that will be released in the era called “Music For Cars.”

The band is expected to release its fourth studio album in May.

Jim Morrison and his arrest at New Haven JAKE SLEBODNICK

Staff Writer J.C.Slebodnick@iup.edu @slebby24

This article contains opinion. It’s Dec. 9, 1967. Progressive rock legends, The Doors, take the

stage in New Haven, Conn., in front of a sell-out crowd. Jim Morrison, national sex symbol and leader of the band, is late to the stage after an altercation backstage in the shower room that involved him, a police officer, a female fan and a can of mace.

The officer on guard did not recognize Morrison, as hard as that sounds, and caused a delay in the concert. Morrison was making out in the shower with a crazed female fan, and when the officer encountered the two, Morrison ended up with mace in his eyes after he told

the officer to take the brandished can and “eat it.” The delay was put into use to let Morrison recover from the spray. During the number “Back Door Man,” Morrison took the mic during a musical interlude and quoted “the whole world hates me.” Following that, Morrison taunted the police officers that did nothing to prevent the encounter in the shower. This led to the police arresting him mid-show, the first time in history this has ever been done, and the crowd taking to the streets in a huge mosh pit of debauchery. The riot resulted in 13 additional arrests and bloodshed covering the streets. Why is this so important to their run as America’s most mystical band? Two words: Peace Frog. The track from the 1970 album “Morrison Hotel” uses this event, as well as the 1968 Democratic National Convention, to formulate a number that utilizes imagery and a warning to the nation. The Democratic Convention was added into the song since Morrison strongly felt a negative presence toward the U.S. government since police brutally attacked protesters. Keep in mind, this was during one of the strongest politi-

cal eras in U.S. history. The song is considered to be a very implicit yet meaningful piece of music history. But what everyone wants to know if Morrison’s arrest led to the creation of this song. The lyrics consist of a motif with the constant use of “blood” and the personification of the events mentioned above to a woman. It sounds to me that if Morrison was not arrested in New Haven, the song may have been just another poem written by Morrison left to die in the history books with him in 1971. It was the added kick he needed to perfect the song altogether. Plus, it’s another reason to support his argument that law officials are ruining the country, since they are using their power to overpower citizens rather than protect them. He also (Facebook) said they will one day run under fierce leaders that allow little to no freedom to act as they please. Does this mean that he could have been foreshadowing our world today? No matter what, there is no real “peace” in the song, or the world. Morrison’s arrest opened more avenues whether it was his intention, or if by some weird coincidence.

McQueen provides fans with new spectacular ‘Widows’ JEREMY STOUT

Staff Writer J.W.Stout2@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. Steve McQueen is certainly one of the greats in his generation of filmmakers. The director of “Shame” and “12 Years a Slave” has never turned in a movie that wasn’t truly great. “Widows” continues that trend. A taught heist movie about a group of women who are brought together to pull off a heist after their criminal husbands die pulling off a job, “Widows” successfully weaves a crowd-pleasing thriller amongst far more serious thoughts about politics, race relations and the patriarchy. It features great performances from one of the greatest ensembles ever assembled for a film. Viola Davis (proving that she is the coolest person ever) is great as the hard-nosed leader of the group, Elizabeth Debicki turns in the best performance of her career as a woman finding power within herself for the first time and Michelle Rodriguez goes a long way in redeeming herself for the being in the god-awful “The Assignment.” The real standout of the movie is Daniel Kaluuya “Get Out.” Kaluuya plays the enforcer brother to a crime lord turned politician (Bryan Tyree Henry, “At-

lanta”) and offers a performance that is the new peak of movie bad guys. The rest of the cast includes Liam Neeson, Colin Ferrell and Robert Duvall, who are all exceptional as well. The script by McQueen and Gillian Flynn “Gone Girl” weaves the heist narrative and social commentary together in a seemingly effortless manner. The politics of this film are what turns it into something special. The commentary about how those in power don’t care about the community that they purport to serve, and criminals and politicians are so close together that there’s basically no real distinction other than, as Henry puts it, politicians worry about people with microphones instead of guns. All this corruption comes at the expense of everyone, but particularly women, who are relegated to the gutter and seen as weak by the men that look to control, threaten and extort them. The best example of this corruption and desire for those in power to line their own pockets and protect their interests comes in a scene where Ferrell (Henry’s political opponent for alderman) leaves a campaign rally and in a long-tracking shot that starts looking over the right side hood of a car, showing a community

that’s in shambles from decades of neglect from those in power, pans across the hood to the left side of the street, where Ferrell’s character operates, and shows an area that is

flush with wealth and opulence. It’s a visual that stayed with me for the rest of the film. It represents a visual sense that few filmmakers have and is the

perfect example of what makes McQueen exceptional. He doesn’t just want to tell you what he’s thinking; he wants to show you as well.

IUP women’s basketball burst into conference play this past weekend, defeating both Kutztown and Millersville on the road. Both games were won by more than 30 points with Kutztown falling by a score of 72-41 and Millersville losing 87-52. The first of the weekend matchups was Kutztown, who was having a rough start to its season coming into the game winning only one of its first six games. Things did not get any better for the Golden Bears in their game

18

against IUP. The Crimson Hawks shot out to an early lead scoring 25 points and getting three steals in the first quarter and taking a 25-4 lead. By the end of the first half, IUP had a 26-point lead. Both Britney Robinson (senior, education) and Carolyn Appleby (senior, safety science) had double-digit points, and seven different players had scored for the Crimson Hawks. The second half was still dominated by IUP but not to the extent of the first half. IUP only outscored Kutztown by five points as IUP finished up the big victory. Robinson and Appleby led the Crimson Hawks on offense as Rob-

inson ended with 19 points and Appleby closed the game with 17 points and six assists. The duo also was a main factor on defense with Robinson getting eight rebounds and two blocks and Appleby getting a career-high eight steals. Appleby’s eight-steal performance is tied for the seventh most in a game in IUP history. Despite the dominance of the two, this game was fully a team effort with 11 different players for the Crimson Hawks. On Sunday, IUP traveled to Millersville and carried its momentum with it. The Crimson Hawks scored early and continued to push the pace as

December 4, 2018

they got out to a double-digit lead fewer than four minutes into the game. They were able to keep this lead and added to it, ending the first quarter up by 12 points. This marked the third straight game where IUP had a double-digit lead after just one quarter of play. IUP continued to control the remainder of the game as they rolled through Millersville 87-52. Kendall Hunter (senior, special education) proved herself to be a main factor on both the Crimson Hawk offense and defense as she picked up a double-double coming off of the bench. She was perfect from the field in

the first half, making all four of her shot attempts and only missed one in the second as she ended with 16 points. Hunter was also a dominant force on the boards as she scooped up 12 rebounds for the Crimson Hawks. This marked Hunter’s first career double-double. “I think our team is very focused and knows what we want to accomplish this year,” Appleby said. “So I think that is really helping us so far especially on those two road games this past weekend.” The next game will be home Saturday as they will continue conference play against Shippensburg at the Memorial Field House.

The IUP men’s basketball team remained unbeaten by the skin of its teeth during the start of conference play over the weekend, as Kutztown took the Crimson Hawks into overtime before IUP claimed the 96-87 victory, and Millersville came within a point of doing the same with a final score of 74-73. Saturday saw three IUP players score 20-plus points against the Golden Bears, with Dante Lombardi (senior, finance) leading the way with 26. It was Lombardi who caught fire in overtime, single-handedly taking the Crimson Hawks from an 81-79 deficit to an 88-81 lead in a two-minute span near the end of the extra period. Lombardi set a career-high going 6-for-9 on three-point shots, which added to a team-high 13 total threes on the season. Jacobo Diaz (senior, economics) and Malik Miller (junior, communications media) were the others to score 20 or more, with Diaz putting

up 22 and Miller scoring 20. The overtime period came and went without Diaz, who fouled out near the end of regulation, and the Spaniard was almost joined by four of his teammates on the bench, each of whom had four fouls to their names. While Lombardi nearly missed out on his hot OT, Armoni Foster (redshirt freshman, marketing) and Marko Krivacevic (senior, information systems) put up 11 and 10 points respectively to go along with their fouls, and Willem Brandwijk (senior, marketing) nearly fouled out as well to go along with his four points in 25 minutes. Sunday’s game featured a big comeback from the Mauraders, who had been down at halftime by 10 and saw deficits as large as 16 points before storming back, scoring 24 of 31 points at the end of the first and start of the second half to take the lead over the Crimson Hawks. A seven-point run by IUP put them ahead late, with Brandwijk, Miller and Foster scoring to give the Crimson Hawks a lead they would not relinquish.

IUP is still ranked third in both of the major polls, and the 8-0 Crimson Hawks return home Saturday to take on Shippensburg at the Me-

morial Field House in what could be a battle of unbeaten teams. The Red Raiders also sit at 8-0 but face Bowie State Wednesday.

College Football Playoff is set as four teams look for national glory STEVEN LANGDON JR. Culture Editor S.Langdon@iup.edu @ThePennIUP

This article contains opinion. The College Football Playoff committee released its final rankings Sunday. The rankings that were released set in stone which teams would be playing against each other during the bowl season. It also determined the College Football Playoff bracket. The teams that were chosen had to be ranking in the top four. This year for the fifth installment of the playoff set-up, the committee chose Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. Here is a breakdown of the games and the teams competing this year. Orange Bowl: No. 1 Alabama (12-0) vs. No. 4 Oklahoma (11-1) Alabama enters this year as the only team to make it to every playoff. Nick Saban has done a phenomenal job since accepting the head coach role in 2007. Alabama fans over the years have been able to see special

(AL.com) Jalen Hurts led the Alabama Crimson Tide to an SEC championship victory over Georgia.

talent year after year. Saban has produced a first round pick at every position on the offense and defense except quarterback since taking the job, which leads to the team’s star player. Alabama starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had impressive numbers all season. He has racked up more than 3,000 yards passing and 36 touchdowns and has only thrown four interceptions, leading

him to being a candidate for the Heisman Trophy. It wasn’t easy, but the Crimson Tide were able to beat Georgia late in the game to win the SEC Championship even after Tagovailoa went down with an ankle injury. Quarterback Jalen Hurts came in and did wonderful for Alabama, going seven of nine passing and a touchdown in the air and on the ground.

The injury update on Tagovailoa is that he will be out the next two weeks after getting surgery on his ankle. He is expected to make a full recovery before the Orange Bowl. The Sooners were able to convince the committee that their resumé was good enough to make it. This will be the third time they will participate in the playoffs. Oklahoma has the best offense in college football this season, which is really saying something considering how high-powered offenses are in the Big 12 conference. The offense averages more than 49 points per game and 577 yards per game. The team is led by another star quarterback in Kyler Murray. He has put up what many call “video game” numbers. His stats include more than 4,000 passing yards, more than 892 rushing yards and 51 total touchdowns. The Sooners got their revenge this past week beating the only team they lost to this year in Texas in the Big 12 Championship. The win did show that they could beat anyone with their high-powered offense. The main question mark on this team is the defense. Oklahoma ranks 124th out of 130 teams. They will have tough competition against Alabama, who is fifth in total offense. Cotton Bowl: No. 2 Clemson (13-0) vs. No. 3 Notre Dame (120) Clemson completes its first undefeated season since the 2015-

2016 season. This will be the team’s fourth straight time being in the playoffs. Clemson had arguably the easiest schedule out of the teams in the playoffs. The Tigers seemed to just go through the motions every week, winning games by a significant amount in a relatively weak Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), which saw just three teams finish with more than seven wins, all in Clemson’s Atlantic division. This week they added another large defeat, beating Pitt 42-10 in the ACC Championship. The offense has been balanced all season, averaging more than 500 yards of offense. Their defense has also been strong part for them. The Tigers ranks ninth in the country in yards allowed. It has allowed only 13 points per game, which ranks second in college football. The star player for Clemson is defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell. He is expected to leave after this season for the NFL Draft. He has registered 11 sacks, placing him seventh in the nation. Overall there is not much to say about Clemson. They may be the weakest team in the playoffs, but if the defense plays well enough, there is no doubt they could compete in the National Championship. Meanwhile, the Fighting Irish have completed an undefeated season and have made it to the playoffs. How many saw this one coming? The problem with Notre Dame compared to other teams is that they are an independent school and cannot play in a conference championship. That did not stop them from running the table this season. They had crucial victories over Michigan, Syracuse and Northwestern. This is all after being one of the most traveled teams in football. The offense and defense have looked strong all season for the Irish as they look for their first National Championship since 1988. Looking at all four teams, I believe that Alabama will play Notre Dame in the National Championship game for a 2013 rematch. Unfortunately for Irish fans, Alabama will defeat them once again.

(TNS) The Seattle Seahawks are one of many teams still in the hunt in the NFC Wild Card race.

NFL playoff picture coming down to wire with four weeks left JAKE SLEBODNICK

Staff Writer J.C.Slebodnick@iup.edu @slebby24

This article contains opinion. With the NFL season winding down, playoff talks are now circling mainstream media as well as fans’ heads. The race is tighter than anyone could have predicted due to controversy, upsets and overall a season that has not really produced to the eyes of fans all around the country. The AFC and NFC North have no definite leader as the Baltimore Ravens are looking to overtake the Pittsburgh Steelers after the sixtime Super Bowl champions failed to come up with a win, blowing a 16-point lead against the Los Angeles Chargers Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Chicago Bears are hanging by a thread hoping that the Minnesota Vikings can drop a few games. Over in the NFC East, the Dallas Cowboys shockingly lead the campaign to the surprise of fans, even

their own. But the Washington Redskins should not be counted out. They could be the underdog story of the season if they continue to play well, especially after losing QB Alex Smith for the season. One team, the Los Angeles Rams, has already clinched a playoff berth. Already succeeding 11 wins in 13 weeks, Todd Gurley, Jared Goff and Aaron Donald look to lead the Rams to another Super Bowl and maybe, just maybe, a Super Bowl victory. It’s unsure whether the New Orleans Saints are real championship contenders. Drew Brees has proven time and time again that he can deliver in the clutch despite being one of the league’s oldest quarterbacks. With tools like Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas, the passing game could remain strong, and the Saints may be able to give Brees his second Super Bowl title and a real way for an elite quarterback to retire. A big thought in fans’ minds is the heated competition in the NFC

for the wild card spots. The race, consisting of the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings is what is topping talks around the NFL, as it could be up for anyone at this point. These teams have mixed poor gameplay and just an overall cold streak to create this boiling pot of competition and stress. One good thing is that the Vikings could be the ones with the upper hand as they have a young QB/WR combination that makes defenses tremble in fear every time they take the field. The Seahawks have surprised a lot of people since Russell Wilson seems to be a one-man wrecking crew and is leading the Hawks to a stunning 7-5 record, especially after preseason analysis predicted them to finish with a poor record. My prediction: the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New Orleans Saints in the Super Bowl in a battle of the offensive juggernauts. These two teams each have playoff experience along with powerful minds controlling the offense.

Patrick Mahomes has yet to disappoint and rack fewer than 300 yards and three touchdowns per game, while Drew Brees has the reasons mentioned previously. But again, nothing is for certain,

especially in the world of professional football. Maybe we will see a battle of wild card teams take on each other in the Super Bowl, or we could see no-doubters make it.

College basketball season has three teams running away from the pack ANDREW PIERSON Staff Writer A.W.Pierson@iup.edu @AndrewPierson23

This article contains opinion. With the first few weeks of the men’s college basketball season in the books, we have seen three teams emerge and look as though they are a step ahead of the pack. These tops teams include the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Kansas Jayhawks and the Duke Blue Devils. They all seem like they are serious contenders for a national championship, but all teams have their own ways of playing. Gonzaga (8-0) is led by junior forward Rui Hachimura, who is averaging 21.9 PPG and more than six rebounds per game. Not far behind Hachimura are teammates Zack Norvell Jr. and Brandon Clarke, who average 18.6 and 17.3 points per game respectively. The team’s key player may be senior guard Josh Perkins, who averages nearly 12 PPG and almost nine assists per game. The Bulldogs don’t have a freshman on their roster who scores in double figures, which is also the story for the Kansas Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks (6-0) are led by senior Lagerald Vick who pours in more than 20 PPG and who is accompanied by junior big men Dedric Lawson and Udoka Azubuike, who combine for 33.8 PPG, 17.7 RPG and more than four APG. Kansas looks to use their big men inside, as well as its experience to gain an advantage over its opponents. Although the Duke Blue Devils have size on their roster, they are lacking in the experience area. Duke (7-1) is led by a group of four freshmen, RJ Barrett, Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones. This group has an incredible combined stat line, averaging 69.2 PPG, 21.9 RPG and 13.9 APG, with Williamson and Barrett each contributing more than 20 PPG themselves. It’s shaping up to be an amazing season for these teams, and it will be interesting to see which teams improve and which teams don’t. Duke and Kansas are struggling from the free throw line, both shooting fewer than 65 percent while Gonzaga shoots more than 73 percent from the stripe. While Duke and Gonzaga have been average from the three-point arc, shooting under 39 percent,

Kansas has excelled here and shoots more than 44 percent from the three. With Kansas and Gonzaga each

having an advantage in those areas, Duke will have to grow as the season goes on and see if it can overtake the leaders with its fresh-

men core. I wouldn’t be surprised to see two of these teams meeting in the National Championship Game.
