Pat on the back for a dedicated woman SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

n the spirit of celebrating Women’s Month and honouring people while they are still alive, MOT – an Athlonebased registered non-profit organisation (NPO) honoured a woman whom they deemed worthy of a special accolade. The organisation honoured Christine Thomas, a student support officer from False Bay Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, Fish Hoek campus, with a “Are Hovstad Award”. She was nominated by Pamela Jako, who is the student representative council (SRC) president at the college. The award is named after a Norwegian community activist Jarl Are Hovstad, who became a permanent South African resident. He was honoured by HRH King Harald of Norway for his work in education and health on the Cape Flats. He was also awarded Western Cape provincial honours in the form of The Order of the Disa, bestowed various Rotary International awards and was instrumental in the establishment of a lifeskills programme for students and learners in TVET colleges and schools. Hosted on Tuesday 2 July in Pinelands, the award ceremony sought to encourage people to do well in their respective industries. MOT was established 22 years ago in Norway and arrived in South Africa 10 years ago. It facilitates life-skills programmes for young people and empowers the youth to make conscious choices. Its programmes aim to equip young people with the tools to strengthen their awareness, courage and to manage peer pressure. It also has a partnership with False V To page 2.

Thomas said the honour means that she must carry on with her work and be the listening ear she has been to students

n additional 18 homeless people can now be accommodated at Elim Nightshelter after staff of WP Media (publishers of People’s Post, City Vision and TygerBurger) put notebooks and pens aside to make emergency waterproof sleeping bags for the shelter. This was in conjunction with Media24’s #1000 Acts of Kindness project. The sleeping bags are made with newspaper and plastic, creating a warm, portable and waterproof emergency sleeping bag for those in need. Manager of the shelter Shafiek Ortell says homeless people come knocking at their door every day. “We have a lot of street people co-

ming to the gates of Elim Night Shelter daily. They normally come for a meal and not for accommodation as they prefer to live on the streets due to addictions and couples not wanting to separate. “We have 70 beds and 15 mattresses, therefore, we cater for 85 adults sleeping here daily,” explains Shafiek. Housemother Liza Ortell says she is grateful for the efforts of the WP Media team: “We think it’s amazing as we are currently out of mattresses. Now we can at least cater to 18 more homeless people,” she says. V Elim Nightshelter will be hosting a fundraiser at The Barnyard Theatre in Bellville on 12 September at 20:00. Tickets cost R160. For bookings and information call Shafeek Ortell on 061 414 8993 or email elimnightshelter@telkomsa.net.

Through the awards, now in its fourth year, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers, aim to honour those awesome elders who are making a profound difference in their communities. He, or she, could be the older, active neighbourhood watch patroller walking the streets at 04:00, feeding the children in their street, driving the sick to the clinic, knitting beanies and blankets for unwanted babies or giving free boxing lessons to keep the youth off the streets, all out of their own pockets. done for their community.

was the first time the ceremony was held. Carolus the criteria used in nominating candidates was to look for someone who lives the values of MOT. “Thomas was the best candidate,” Carolus explains. “She is a role model to many and lives by MOT’s values X to be yourself, to be passionate, to lead and to accept that you can’t always be perfect.” Thomas says she feels honoured by the award. It was unexpected because her work is driven by pure passion. “I was humbled by the honour. It came as a surprise. It shows that I am doing good work and that it’s worth recognition,” Thomas says. For this individual, a social worker by profession, working with learners comes

easily because it is something she enjoys. “I am passionate about serving the youth. I like the fact that they can come to me anytime. I have an open-door policy. This is a calling for me,” she says. Jako says she has known Thomas for more than two years and describes her as a mother figure. She says Thomas deserves the nomination because of her willingness to go the extra mile for students. “She is always willing to assist. When I was asked to nominate someone, it was just a no-brainer because she has been there for a lot of us,” says Jako. Her wish for Thomas is that she continues to do the good work she does and to reach as many students as possible.

Nominations close on Tuesday 27 August Elders making a difference can once again be nominated in one of two categories: “70-80 years” or “80 plus”. Six finalists will be selected and notified by Tuesday 3 September. All their wonderful deeds will be featured in the newspaper in the weeks following, whereafter our readers can vote for the People’s Choice winner. The winners in both categories, as well as the People’s Choice winner, will be announced at a morning tea in Cape Town on Saturday 12 October.

Talks about boredom and depression at U3A SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

I

n an effort to help mature people escape boredom, the University of the Third Age (U3A) hosts intimate motivational sessions every third Thursday of the month at various venues around Athlone and Manenberg. This month they will welcome Emeritus Professor Jennifer Thomson, who will discuss her book titled Confessions of an alcoholic scientist, among other topics.

This was announced by U3A’s chairperson Jacki Lange. “We have had some exceptional people talking this year in our sessions and this will be just one of those. People must come, listen to some educational talk,” she says The organisation seeks to address issues in the community by using arts. It also works with organisations that have a similar mission to tackle these issues. Lange says those who are interested to attend the event must prepare themselves to be motivated and inspired. She urges them

to bring books and magazines which will be swopped after the session. “People must bring magazines; we will donate them to charity afterwards. Also if people have some other things they want to bring like biscuits they can, but the cover fee will cover that,” she explains. Entrance fee is R5 for members and R10 for those who are not members. The event will be held at 10:00 at the Belthorn Recreational Hall. V For more information call Jacki Lange at 083 642 2567 or Ruan Wiggett at 084 714 5899.

We can’t do it alone, say patrollers SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic Local neighbourhood safety volunteers have put a call to residents to support volunteer patrollers. This was highlighted at a community meeting held on Friday 27 July, which was arranged by the Surrey Estate Neighbourhood Patrol (SENP). SENP is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) and the meeting was chaired by its chairperson, Yasien Regal. Regal says the meeting was aimed at drawing a clear picture of their needs as patrollers.

It sought to motivate residents to show more support to the cause as the patrollers have a wide range of challenges that affect their work. “There is a wave escalation of crime and we have a lack of resources and that has made us to realise that we are not effective in terms of resources,” he says. Some of the challenges include the costs involved in patrolling. Some of the financial issues are brought on by the cost of fuel for patroller vehicles. The patrollers are paid a monthly stipend. Their group of patrollers consists of more than 20 members.

The patrollers have also been under attack and Regal says they feel they do not have enough members. He further urged residents to mobilise and increase the support so they can intensify their resources. He added: “The more money we have, the more we can increase our resources – and that can be achieved if all the people can make the contribution, which would also mean we reduce the amount people pay.” He says this group has been serving the community for the past three years, while SENP has been in existence in the community for more than 20 years.

Police nab unlicensed firearm user An Athlone police patrol resulted in the arrest of a 33-year-old suspect who resides in Bokmakierie. During the patrol at 9:55 on Tuesday 23 July, police spotted a man walking and when he noticed the officers he reportedly dropped something in the yard and began running. When police went to check what had been dropped in the yard, they found a black Luther firearm with eight live rounds loaded in the magazine. They also found a sock next to it containing 18 bullets. The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday 5 August on charges of possession of unlicensed firearm.

VANGUARD ESTATE

Community needs to work together SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

R

esidents of Vanguard and Welcome Estate gathered at the Vanguard Community Hall on Saturday 3 August for an annual general meeting to raise their concerns. The meeting was organised by the Vanguard and Welcome Estate Ratepayers’ Civic Association (VWERCA). Among others, the meeting raised awareness regarding service delivery matters in the two communities. Tania Bosser, chairperson of the association, said the meeting was a continuation of meetings they have held in the community in the past few years. The aim was for the community to engage and interact. She added that VWERCA hoped to not only raise concerns but also inform residents. “The association is about keeping the community up to speed with general information and to keep people informed,” she said. To unpack some of the issues that were raised, different government departments including water and sanitation, parks and recreation and community services and health attended the meeting to respond to some questions from the residents. Mayco members for safety and security, JP Smith, community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, and energy and climate change, Phindile Maxiti, were present. Ward 44 and 47 councillors Anthony Moses and Antonio van der Rheede, respectively, were also present. While Bosser and her team worked hard to ensure that the invitation to the meeting reached as many people as possible, she said she was not pleased with numbers. “The meeting did not have a good turn-out.

Some of the attendees of the meeting. We did all we could to inform people about it and that concerns us,” she expressed. Her hope is for another meeting to take place and to be well attended. The topics that were discussed included an overview or background, fees and achievements on the organisation. Also, discussed were ward committee memberships and the city district improvement project (CID).

Bosser described the session as very informative, as Smith outlined crime statistics in the area. “The areas have been plagued with an increase in crime over the last few months; therefore the CID project, to be established by the community, would assist in this regard. Currently there are five guards in the various clusters which is regarded as a voluntary CID, as community members are

paying towards this project,” said Bosser. Smith commended the association for its work in the community. He emphasised the importance of a united community. “It is important for you to have a strong community vision. If there is a single voice, you know what you want. I really commend you for what you are doing here this morning,” said Smith.

Technicians say the work went smoothly despite unpredictable weather. Technical manager Emile Streicher says they replaced the heel and haul ropes, and also tested and replaced the load-bearing components on the cabins. The mechanical overhaul of the rotating floors and cabin door mechanisms in the cable cars were also completed, as well as the maintenance of the hydraulic and brake system. Annual maintenance and routine checks, begun on Monday 8 July, was scheduled for completion on Monday 19 August. Managing director Wahida Parker announced the reopening of the cableway at a media briefing at the popular tourist destination on Wednesday 7 August. She invites guests to visit and enjoy the views once again. Parker applauds the team of technicians for their good work and for finishing ahead of schedule. t was fun and games for seniors at an event organised to entertain at the Manenberg People’s Centre on Wednesday 7 August. The fun-filled event was organised by the Caring Hearts Seniors’ Club and was attended by club members as well as residents from the surrounding community. Through the event the club also wanted to raise funds for its upcoming breakfast in September. Participants were treated to a light meal and Bingo sessions. Bingo caller Faldiela de Vries kept the numbers rolling during the game.

Centre manager Christine Jansen says the event, more than anything, was for seniors to have fun. She also thanked the provincial department of social development for sponsoring the event. “Because of their donation, we have managed to get some goodie bags to give them when they go home,” she says. The club also hosts numerous activities including regular visits by members, where they are treated to meals. Jacqueline Davids and Yosuf Rowland, both Manenberg residents, said they were having a great time at the club. They thanked the centre for hosting the event and vowed to return if the event or a similar one happened again.

t has been 12 years since these learners first walked into a classroom. The journey has been filled with ups and downs but they are now more excited than ever about what the future holds. Despite all the hurdles they have to overcome to get where they wish to be. Talia Petersen, Azraa Timm, and Chelsea Martin X all 17 years old and Grade 12 learners at Mount View High School X share their dreams and passions.

They speak about the challenges they face as teenage girls growing up in Hanover Park and what Women’s Month means to them. They were all born and raised in the area. For them, Hanover Park is home and they agree, there is no place like home. They say despite all the challenges they face, they will push harder to make names for themselves and inspire others. Talia says the situation in Hanover Park makes her sad because learners have become used to things they are not supposed to be used to. “A lot of us come from broken homes with absent fathers.”

CITY

Bumper week for traffic department O

ver four days, officers arrested taxi drivers for 1 596 outstanding warrants totalling nearly R3 million. The first week in August was huge for The City of Cape Town’s Traffic officers who made 300 arrests in total, impounding 134 vehicles and 242 cellphones, and issuing 27 468 fines for various offences. General enforcement activities resulted in the arrest of 16 motorists for drunk driving, 13 motorists for reckless and negligent driving, 84 motorists with outstanding warrants, 10 motorists on a range of other charges. But it was Operation Reclaim that saw warrant dodgers hit the skids during four operations in Delft, Manenberg, Mfuleni and Kraaifontein. Between Thursday 1 August and Sunday 4 August, officers arrested 176 taxi drivers for 1 596 outstanding warrants totaling R 2 742 470. One of them, aged 50, has 167 outstanding warrants to the value of R230 900. He was also found in possession of a firearm with an expired licence. The Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith says that the traffic department continues to be overrun by complaints about the behaviour of taxi drivers. ”The taxi industry needs to take responsibility for its actions. I urge errant drivers to pay their outstanding fines, and to start showing greater regard for the rules of the road. “In recent months, the Cape Town Traffic Service has increased its level of operations in this area, and so it is only a matter of time before you’re caught. “We are also about to increase the size of the Taxi Enforcement Unit, which will significantly improve our ability to respond to the ongoing contempt for the rules of the road by the public transport sector,” said Smith. Elsewhere on the roads, the Metro Police arrested 42 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a series of vehicle checkpoints across the city. They also arrested 12 suspects for possession of drugs, and one for the illegal posses-

On Thursday 1 August, officers attached to the Metro Police Property Crime Unit were alerted to drug dealing taking place from a red Hyundai at the corner of Main and Station roads in Mowbray. Officers spotted the vehicle and seached, revealing 55 bankies of dagga, four cellphones and R2 250 in cash in a black backpack. The driver and passenger, aged 25 and 24, were arrested for possession of drugs and dealing in drugs and detained at Mowbray Police Station. On the highways, Metro Police officers came to the aid of 54 motorists who had experienced mechanical breakdowns. Officers stood down at the locations on the N2, R300, Spine Road, Baden Powell Drive and the N1 until the motorists were able to get going again, to prevent them from falling victim to crime. “We renew our appeal to motorists to please ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they have enough fuel to get to their destination. “It’s also important to keep a spare wheel, water, as well as oil in the vehicle, as these are the most common reasons cited for breakdowns,” added Alderman Smith. He reminded motorists to save the number for the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on their cellphone so that they could call for help in the event of a

Four City sites put forward for reinvention The City of Cape Town is considering making available four underused City-owned sites to the private sector for carbon-neutral mixed-use. The underused sites are located close to public transport services in Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Diep River, and Goodwood, and could also be repurposed for transit-oriented development. The proposal is the result of the City’s participation in the second round of the C40 Reinventing Cities Programme, a worldwide competition for carbon-neutral developments. The purpose of the programme is to transform underused urban sites into beacons of zero carbon emissions and resilient development. The proposed sites are: . Athlone station car park opposite the entrance to the Athlone train station. This site comprises of 3.7ha. Apart from being close to the station, the area is well-served by minibus-taxis and about 8km from the Cape Town central business district. . Kapteinsklip station precinct in Mitchell’s Plain. It is located to the north and south of Baden Powell Drive at the intersections of Eisleben and Weltevreden roads. It comprises of 30.6ha. The site includes underused car parks and undeveloped open spaces and is located on the False Bay coast close to the Mnandi resort and the Kapteinsklip train station. . Moquet Farm in Diep River. The site is on the intersection of Main and Kendal roads and comprises of 2.1ha. The rail station is a block away, and the site is ideal for higher density mixed-use development. . Tygerdal site at the Montevista station, Goodwood. The site comprises of 7.6ha. It is

close to major retail and commercial centres. The site is ideal for a mixed-use transitoriented development and could include different tenure options and housing opportunities to a wide range of income groups. Together, these sites cover approximately 40ha. The combined market value of the sites is R316 million. “By making available the sites to the private sector for development we can ignite much needed urban renewal in these areas, economic growth, and job creation,” added Nieuwoudt. She said sites were also ideal for high-density housing as they were close to train stations, minibus-taxi services, and bus stops. “Should we decide to go ahead, we want to see developments that include high-density housing opportunities across a wide range of typologies, tenures and incomes. It must be affordable and could be balanced with commercial and public uses. Whatever is proposed must enhance the urban environment and improve the quality of life for residents from the area. It must be safe, convenient, and attractive,” says Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayco member for finance. Should the City decide to make the land available for development, the bidders will need to submit design proposals that minimise the amount of energy a building uses for heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, ventilation, electrical services, and so forth. The projects will have to reduce energy demand, use energy efficiently, and use renewable energy, or low-carbon energy. V To comment on the proposal or for more information, visit www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay. More information is also available at all subcouncil offices and libraries across Cape Town.

he IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town campus spearheaded five Mandela Day initiatives, on and off-campus, to celebrate 67 Minutes for Mandela. “We are so grateful to be able to give back to our communities. Words cannot describe our sincere gratitude to all staff, students and sponsors for every donation made. What a fulfilling experience,” says Saleem Jackson, the college campus principal. The first initiative kicked off at the Loaves and Fishes Shelter for adults on 15 July. A team of 16 students painted two of the rooms at the premises. A donation drive was held on campus

weeks before during which students, staff and sponsors donated generously. On 16 July, staff and students packed a total of 19 656 meals for Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief non-profit organisation (NPO) that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations, Students revamped the Lucas Mbebe Educare Centre in Gugulethu on 17 July. The Early Childhood Development centre cares for more than 113 children between the ages of two to six. Next on the list of good causes was the Leliebloem children’s home in Athlone. Staff and students painted three of the Lelie- bloem Children’s Home boys’ rooms and they also donated pots, pans and plastic containers to the home on 18 July. The last of the five Mandela Day initiatives took place at the SOS Children’s Home in Thornton on 19 July. The home was in dire need of a library revamp, a space where their 80 kids, aged three to 18, can obtain books and use a place to study. WOMEN’S MONTH

‘Take care of yourselves’ F

inding balance between work and family life in a fast-paced environment can place significant pressure on women, affecting their mental and physical health. In celebration of International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on 9 August, the provincial department of health encourages women to prioritise their health and to work with them to find ways to improve their mental and general wellbeing. “Finding balance in our competitive society takes a strain on our women and families and by improving the health of women, this, in turn, enhances the productivity, social and economic participation and development of families. “We are highlighting the importance of prevention and promotion of wellness to build healthy, resilient, wellness-conscious individuals, and families throughout the province,” says Western Cape minister of health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo. The department highlights the services available to women at its health facilities and women are encouraged to take full advantage of their free access to a range of health services available at any public health clinic in the province. The following services are available to women: contraception; pregnancy testing; termination of pregnancy (TOP); antenatal (pre-birth) health care; birth/labour services; post-natal (after-birth) health care; cervical cancer screening; menopause care; tuberculosis (TB) and HIV screening and care; chronic condition care and management; sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening and treatment and youth-friendly clinics. They also offer counselling and screening services, which include referrals for mammograms, information on self-examination for breast cancer, general information regarding nutrition and wellness, sexual abuse and rape counselling; as well as mental health screening, counselling and care. The department’s services are not only limited to more mature women, but also available to young women and girls who are particularly vulnerable living in societies with many social challenges. To empower them, the department has partnered with Nacosa to continue with the Young, Women and Girls programme in the Cape Metro Klipfontein area. This programme, which has been funded for another three years by Global Fund, focuses on increasing retention in school, decreasing the HIV incidence and teenage pregnancy, accelerate prevention to reduce new HIV and TB infections and STIs, decrease gender-based violence and increase economic opportunities for our young girls

and women living in the Cape Flats. “To ensure that the department reaches its Healthcare 2030 goal towards becoming more person-centred, a Whole of Society Approach (WOSA) is required whereby all role-players, partners and government bodies work together to ensure that our women and their families healthcare and other social needs are met to ensure a healthier and more wellbalanced lifestyle in the home,” says Mbombo. The Community-Based Services unit of the department partners with non-profit organisations (NPOs) to help women in need find well-balanced lifestyles by utilising Community Healthcare Workers (CHWs) to conduct home assessments and assist in finding suitable healthcare assistance, as well as linkages for the family to local clinics and other government institutions. These home visits by community healthcare workers and healthcare professionals to women and families who are unable to visit their local health facility, form part of a new initiative introduced by the department called the Community Orientated Primary Care (COPC) project. One participant in the COPC project is Sandra Mentoor (67) from Eastridge. She receives a state pension and is the sole breadwinner to a household of five. Mentoor neglected her health to take care of her family and put food on the table. “I was very sceptical when the community health workers knocked on my door to provide home-based healthcare. I had negative experiences from state healthcare which made me avoid going to day hospitals for help,” says Mentoor. “I have diabetes and never took care of my health previously because I had to provide for my family. “My neglect led to all my toes being amputated on my right foot which could have been treated and healed with proper care,” Mentoor explained. Because of the CHWs persistence to provide healthcare, Mentoor finally allowed them in her home to start treating her health problem. “Not only did they assist me and got me on the road to recovery, but they managed to link up the rest of my household with the Department of Social Development for assistance and helped to solve educational challenges my grandchildren faced,” says Mentoor. All Women’s Health primary healthcare services are free of charge, and we encourage all women, including young girls, to make use of these services to improve their health status and well-being. V To find out how to make use of these services, visit www.westerncape.gov.za/dept/health or your nearest healthcare facility.

Gunshot patients in the spotlight SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

Mary Bruce

“I thank the Lord for my life today because I could have been gone.” These were the words of a visibly emotional Mary Bruce. The Hanover Park resident shared her story at a media briefing, organised by the provincial health department and Groote Schuur Hospital, on Thursday 8 August. Themed “Gun Shot Injuries at Groote Schuur Hospital Trauma Centre”, the event cast a spotlight on the challenges the hospital faced daily in caring for gunshot patients. Bruce (48) told reporters what happened on Sunday 7 July, the day she was shot. “I was busy hanging washing when I heard gunshots,” she said. When she turned around, she was hit by a bullet in her left leg. Bruce was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital where she underwent operations on her leg. She is currently in a wheelchair but she is positive she will make a full recovery. “I do believe I will be able to walk again,” she said.

She thanked the hospital staff for their care during her stay. She also called on authorities to strengthen measures to rehabilitate teenagers who were involved in drugs and gangsterism. She did not reveal too many details about the person who shot her. All she said was she believed the perpetrator was not older than 17. Bruce was joined by various officials from the provincial department of health, which included the provincial minister of health Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and Professor Andy Nicol, head of the trauma centre at the hospital. Nicol presented a PowerPoint presentation, outlining the surgery process for a gunshot patient. During his presentation, he commended the Firearm Control Act, saying “it works”. According to Nicol, the hospital admits 36 gunshot patients per month. He also spoke about a growing trend in gunshot wound patients. “In the past, we used to see single-shot gunshot patients, but that has changed,” he explained. Now most are admitted with multiple gun-

shot wounds. Mbombo lambasted the media for always pointing fingers at the authorities when things go wrong in the health sector. As an example, she mentioned the outcry over patients who were reportedly sleeping on the floor at some Khayelitsha hospitals. She explained the reason for occurrences like these was a decrease in the available budget, which was further depleted by the high cost of violence-related care. She said the department sometimes finds itself in a position where it has to redirect an ambulance that has been sent out. “We are doing battleground medicine. We rob Paul to pay Pauline,” she said, describing instances where some call-outs had to take priority over others due to the severity of injuries. She also discussed the shortage of staff at hospitals which she attributed to the dwindling budget. In a bid to address the rise in gunshot patients, she said the department was conducting external interventions in the classified “red zone areas”. She explained that data will be collected to determine if progress had been made.

Varsity College netball rises to the occasion T he Independent Institute of Education’s (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town netball first team participated in this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament at Witwatersrand University recently. The ladies were off to a victorious start as the girls defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with a 38-31 win. “The girls played fantastically well after being promoted from C to B division. It was important that we got our USSA tour off to a winning start,” says Andrew Howitt, Varsity College Cape Town’s sports coordinator. On the second day of the tournament, the ladies unfortunately lost by the skin of their teeth, 36-35, to the Durban University of

Technology (DUT). On day three the team made a comeback with a convincing 50-33 win against Central University of Technology (CUT). The team lost their opening match on day four, 45-26, to UCT and on the same day, they bounced back by defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a 34-28 win in game two. On the last day of the tournament the team beat the University of Limpopo (UL) with a win of 48-31 in the final match of USSA tour. “As a newly promoted team the odds were stacked against us in a far more competitive division, however, coming forth to some well-established university’s insured that USSA 2019 was a success and by that we were very proud of the team,” concluded Howitt.

Cape Town streets tickled pink T

he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my

title today. The vibe makes this race so special. It’s so beautiful to see all these women unite on one day and run together.” Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Beetrice Themane finished third. PinkDrive is a non-profit company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. PinkDrive was present at each event offering free clinical breast examinations and educating on the importance of self- breast examinations. PinkDrive received a donation of R75 000 during this year’s prize giving. Results: 1. Annie Bothma – 00:34:52 2. Zintle Xiniwe – 00:37:06 3. Beetrice Themane – 00:37:26 4. Christiane Andriaanse – 00:37:53 5. Bulelwa Simae – 00:38:25 6. Yandiswa Shange – 00:39:36 7. Tyla le Roux – 00:39:54 8. Danette Smith – 00:40:17
