NPO brings services closer to home We Are The World, a non-profit organisation (NPO), launched a programme at Athlone Library on Saturday 21 September. The event aimed to connect residents, especially youth, to various organisations that the NPO works with. The event included some fun activities such as Zumba where the attendees were shown the ropes by enthusiastic facilitators. The plan, according to the NPO’s director, Malcom Oppel, is to have more of these events to attract the youth, take them off the streets and offer them lifestyle advice. Story on page 3. n a bid to unite and to entertain the youth, ward 44 held its debut Heideveld Youth Family day on Heritage Day, Tuesday 24 September, at Heideveld Sports Field. Youth from Heideveld and surrounding areas gathered to listen to the word of God in song. They were joined by youth leaders from different congregations, including Father’s House, Christ Embassy and House of Glory International Ministries. The congregational leaders were there to win over the youth for God and to encourage
them to participate in various campaigns planned for the near future. Although no specific information was given on the campaigns, leaders said they would focus on keeping the youth off the streets and teaching them new skills. Joyce Bogacwi, a youth representative for ward 44 and a member of Father’s House, said they collaborated with Anthony Moses, the councillor for ward 44, and youth from other areas to form a collective group to work with the youth. “We want to equip and empower them in a fun environment, hence the music,” she explained.
Bogacwi, who took down the names of those in attendance, said the youth would be offered support on various issues. The group aims to build and retain relationships with the youth and undertakes to conduct regular check-ups on those who chose to form part of the programme. According to Nomthetho Hiliza, who is from Gugulethu and a member of Christ Embassy, the event was held on Heritage Day because it represents such a powerful message. “The day reminds the youth that they should know their identity. That is why we chose it. The event is also another way to
keep children off the streets,” she added. Hiliza said reinstalling the youth with a sense of remaining true to themselves is part of what the group hopes to achieve. Moses, interacting with the youth, was also present on the day. His office assisted in the event by providing the necessities. He said ward 44 had quite a few youth projects lined up. He said all would be revealed soon. “One of the developments planned is a camp, organised by my office for the youth, to discuss a youth strategy for the ward,” he said.

NPO brings services closer to home SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
F
un was centre stage as residents, young and old, gathered at Athlone Library to take part in different activities in the We Are The World programme launch on Saturday 21 September. The launch was organised by a registered non-profit organisation (NPO), We Are The World. The NPO has been operating in the Athlone region for more than three years. It hosts community events which allow the youth to showcase their talents. According to its director Malcom Oppel, the event was to bring people of Athlone together. It was also to expose them to the different services offered by organisations in the area. “Our message to the youth is that there are a lot of things to do out there. If they attend events like this, they will get to experience that,” Oppel explained. He revealed one of their plans is to have the events as often as possible at different public venues. He also thanked the library for assisting him when he asked for support. “I know it is unideal for an event like this to be hosted at a library because there is not even a sound system but they opened their doors to us. We are grateful,” he said. He also thanked the organisation’s members who availed themselves. One organisation was Hope Africa, an NPO that assists churches and communities to facilitate sustainable development programmes. The NPO was there to address young girls about issues such as teenage pregnancy and staying in school until you matriculate. They also want to recruit girls to attend their programmes. Social worker and member of Hope Africa, Asanda Zulu said the NGO feels strong-
ly about young people and their future. “The aim is to make sure that these young girls remain at school. If they made a mistake and fell pregnant, they must know that it is not the end of the world,” she explained. Zulu said those girls that sign into their free adolescent girls and young women programmes will be given guidance on how to deal with different challenges.

They will also be given pointers on how to live a healthier lifestyle. Virgin Active sales and promotions consultant, Kegan Watson, who was also in attendance, said he was there to spread awareness about health and fitness to the youth. He encouraged them to sign up for gym memberships and make use of all the privileges that come with being a member.
He led some fitness demonstrations that included Zumba. “A lot of youth are not active and our role is to make sure these types of sessions are fun and exciting so that they can want to come and attend and reap the benefits,” he explained. He said the intention was to create an environment that would be ideal for people of all ages.

Wonderful women recognised SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
I
n recognition of women and their contribution to their communities, Penache, an events company, hosted the Women Of Wonder Awards ceremony on Monday 23 September in Rylands. The inaugural award ceremony sought to allow women to shine and to feel appreciated for their contributions. The company hosts a variety of events and the awards, which debuted in South Africa on 23 September, have recently also been hosted in Dubai and Mauritius. To be eligible to win, women had to be nominated by fellow community members. Criteria included progressive thinkers, dynamic leaders who lead by example and women who had a formidable impact on their communities. Those nominated, who included medical doctors, business owners and stay-at-home moms running community projects, were judged by a group of independent auditors. According to the company’s chief executive officer (CEO) and founder, Farzana Mayet, the awards sought to represent women from all walks of life. “These awards are not about discriminating against anyone but are about giving every woman recognition for who she is and what she does,” she explained. Mayet congratulated all the winners, whom she referred to as “shining stars”, and thanked them for uplifting themselves and their communities. According to Mayet, these women would be added to the company’s database and would be in line to win Women of Wonder Visionary Awards; the date of which is yet to be confirmed.
The vibrant and multi-faceted group of Women of Wonder Awards recipients vowed to continue making a difference and serving their communities. PHOTO: SIPHESIHLE Winners of the Women Of Wonder Awards will receive Penache’s support on their various projects. One of the winners was Athlone-born Ammaarah Petersen who runs a catering company called Hot Chefs based in Strand. Petersen thanked Penache and said the award was a way of saying she must continue what she is doing. “I am in awe. Now I need to push harder and keep going. I want to thank Penache and my parents for their support,” she said.
She said she used her company to plough back in the community as she offered temporary jobs to more than 100 residents each year. Another elated recipient was Lho Noruwana from Parklands whose business is in Brackenfell. Noruwana is passionate about women’s personal development. She is the owner of the Focus on Women Institute, which is both a non-profit organisation (NPO) and a proprietary limited (Pty Ltd). She runs various personal development pro-

grammes for women. Noruwana wishes to nurture independent women who do things for themselves. “I believe in up-skilling women. Give them skills and knowledge to empower themselves – then they can go far,” she explained. She said she appreciated the award and added she would use it to inspire girls from her home town in the Eastern Cape. Her message to them was that they could make it in life no matter where they came from.

Road project to create much-needed jobs T
he R20 million Ottery Road rehabilitation project, which is expected to begin this month, will provide much-needed temporary employment and skills development to residents from surrounding areas. “Up to 7% of the project contract value will be spent on temporary work opportunities to residents from the area and a further 10% on attaining the services of local enterprises within these wards,” said Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, on Thursday 19 September. The project will include portions of Ottery and Olieboom roads which provide important links off Jakes Gerwel Drive and Govan Mbeki Dive to the Phillipi Horticultural and Industrial area. Purchase added that they are investing in
the project to ensure that the businesses in the area will benefit. It will also relieve traffic congestion. “The rehabilitated section of the road will cover a distance of 1km. New sidewalks will be constructed in the southern section of Ottery Road. The traffic circle, as well as, other existing sidewalks will also be rehabilitated,” Purchase said. If all goes well, the construction is expected to take up to eight months. Ward 43 residents are encouraged to make use of this opportunity and register at their local subcouncil offices on the jobseekers database. To feature on the list of sub-contractors, local businesses must also register at the offices. V For more information, contact 021 391 0021.
Libraries encourage residents to play chess The City of Cape Town’s library chess tournament, Chess@Libraries 2019, culminated in a round of nail-biting games at the Parow Library where the finals took place last Friday 27 September. After months of elimination rounds, 74 participants from 19 libraries squared off on the black and white boards. The winner was Robert Kuziyamisa and the runner up was Shaun Smith, both patrons from Lentegeur Library. “Chess is becoming more popular and this tournament has drawn players of all ages from around the city,” said the Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, who handed over several chess sets to the library and information services department, with more sets earmarked for other libraries. “The benefits of board games, and especially chess, cannot be overstated. While it exercises both sides of the brain and improves problem-solving skills, playing chess is a fun way of learning how to follow the rules and can help build self-confidence,” said Badroodien. The Chess@Libraries 2019 initiative was pioneered and spearheaded by librarian, Daniel Arendse of Leonsdale Library, who has been involved in the game since 1995 when he started playing while still at primary school. He started chess clubs at several libraries and in 2017 initiated Chess@Libraries
as he believes chess is beneficial, regardless of age. “I want to encourage our patrons, young and old, to get on board,” Badroodien added. V For more information, contact your local library.

Engines to rev at Killarney S
tart your engines for the fourth annual Killarney Motor Show, at the Cape town home of motorsport, Killarney International Raceway, on Sunday 27 October. The organisers are taking the revs up again with close to 1 300 vehicles on show and more than 100 stalls selling just about anything you can think of for your car – and your tummy – with a huge variety of watering holes serving ice-cold drinks, sit-down eats and takeaway vendors. There’s a new, more accessible layout, an entirely new category of exhibitors and fascinating new displays to delight spectators and keep them at the show all day, from when gates open at 10:00 until the show closes at 17:00, including live music and a funfair in the pits paddock offering exciting rides for children of all ages. This year’s show will feature no less than four active circuits, starting with the tar oval, where the Cape Hell Drivers will be running a full tar oval racing event at the show. Next door to that is the arena section; as its name suggests, that’s where you’ll experience non-stop entertainment including stunts, drifting, burnouts, classic motorcycles and even vintage tractor parades and tug-o-war contests. There will be public karting on the one-
kilometre ‘K’ circuit, to give a real taste of how Formula One greats Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna started their racing careers, while the new car dealers have their own dedicated testdrive circuit for the first time, offering testdrives on the latest models all day – including electric cars – another first for the Killarney Motor Show. Trials expert and Dakar Rally hero, Kobus Potgieter will show how to ride over all sorts of natural obstacles, while international stunt stars, brothers Bruce and Brent le Riche will amaze you with impossible stunts on two wheels, including riding almost four metres straight up the side of a truck! In addition, the new car dealers will have their own dedicated test drive circuit for the first time, a one-kilometre loop around the bank on Fastron Corner and through the drag-strip paddock, offering test drives on the latest models all day. The show is open from 10:00 to 17:00 and tickets can be booked at Computicket or paid for at the gate: R100 for adults, R50 for learners under 16 and free if you’re under 12 or on presentation of your membership book if you’re a Western Province Motor Club member.
