Plant a tree and breathe ... As part of the province’s Arbor Month activities, mayor Dan Plato and a few City council members visited Mary Harding School in Athlone to plant trees. More than five trees were planted at the event which took place on Wednesday 18 September. Plato’s message to learners was to take care of nature as it plays a vital role in life. he importance of collaboration between the government and residents, using community structures, was at the centre of discussion at the elective annual general meeting hosted by the Vanguard and Welcome Estate Ratepayers’ Civil Association (VWERCA). New executive committee members were
elected and the outgoing team reported on the past year at the meeting held at St Theresa Primary School on Wednesday 18 September. Registered as an association with the City of Cape Town, VWERCA has been in existence for the past two years. One of its objectives is to drive service delivery. At the meeting, the committee also wanted those present to approve an amendment to the association’s constitution which would
align it with the non-profit organisation (NPO) act. This would have enabled VWERCA to make use of NPO privileges such as asking for donations. The amended constitution was not approved, however, and a new meeting was scheduled. The outgoing chair, Tania Bosser, highlighted her committee’s achievements in her report. Thanks to their efforts, the City replaced
damaged lamp poles and light bulbs that were stolen in the area. She said the issue of illegal dumping had also been addressed with the help of the City. She encouraged residents to take pride in their area and to find proper and decent ways to address issues. “The aim is to drive service delivery in the area because we live here and this is our area,” she said. She visits Karl Bremer every Thursday and all the clothes that are not sold are handed over to Patricia Groenewald of Avondale, to hand out where there is a need. “We sometimes get knitted squares and use that to make blankets for the rape centre at Karl Bremer hospital. The past 20 years I am a volunteer catering coordinator at the Bellville East Reformed Church for the nongovernmental organisation, Koningskinders. This is a group of underprivileged kids
that we take on a camping trip every term. “The kids are from Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and the principal selects who attends the camps. The camp is over five days and is held at the Melkbosstrand Cultural Centre and matrics or college students are the group leaders. Each group leader has three children to take care of for the duration of the camp and the camp has a Christian theme,” she said. The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community. At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day. “I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled. Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild. Winners and runners-up will walk away Shoprite vouchers and other prizes sponsored by TygerBurger, People’s Post, City Vision, and Spec-Savers.
Presiding officer Kader Jacobs led the process of electing the new executive committee. Eight new members were elected with Naser Ally chosen as chair and Saleem Orrie as his vice chair. Ally thanked his fellow community mem-
bers for their votes and promised to honour his duty. “There seems to be a lot of issues. We will try and solve them. People must trust us, we are results-driven. We assure you, we will get things done,” he vowed.

This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home. She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do. “I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries. “Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect secondhand clothing and every three months we have a sale. n an effort to foster a love for reading at primary school level, Rylands Library hosted its annual three-day Battle of The Books event from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 September. Hosted at the Rylands civic centre, the event saw more than five primary schools in and around Rylands taking part. This included Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners from Portavue Primary School, Darul Islam Primary School and Turfhall Primary School. In 2008, the first year it was held, only one school participated. The increase in participants has given the organisers, and all staff members at the library, a boost of confidence. One of the organisers, Farieda Leila Rabe said their main drive with the Battle of the Books is to get more children to enjoy reading. “We are doing this to encourage the kids to read and to instil a culture of reading,” she explained. She thanked her colleagues who helped organise the event, saying it was a collaborative effort. With Battle of the Books, the participating learners are divided into groups. They were all given five books to read before the time is up. At the event, the master of ceremonies asked them questions about the content of the books. The winning group won prizes as well as the coveted title of Battle of the Books Champions. Rabe said it’s important to mention the event is not about prizes and winning, but about learning.
She said the books given to the learners were sourced from other libraries and were age appropriate. This year Afrikaans books were added to the list; something that was never done before. She explained this was an attempt to stimulate the learners’ interest in reading Afrikaans. Hafeezah Hashim, Portavue Primary School’s English and social sciences Grade 6 teacher, said the Battle of the Books event is so popular among their learners – they have been taking part for the past three years. “Our learners are excited to come here, they are eager to read. Besides, this (event) adds value to education and expands their reading ability and knowledge,” she said. She gave the event a thumbs up, adding many learners struggle to read. Initiatives such as Battle of the Books helps improve their reading skills. “We came here to show that we are a good school that appreciates and participates in community events that assist our learners,” she said. One of the learners who participated for the first time was Oyama-Kum Lusaseni, a Grade 6 learner from Turfhall Primary School. He said he reads a lot of books and his favourite subject at school is English. “I read a lot and so I am very confident that my group will win because our reading skills are good,” he said. The winning teams were: . Grade 5: Rylands Primary School; . Grade 6: Darul Islam Primary School; and . Grade 7: Darul Islam Primary School.

Home is where the heart is A
dream came true for 40 elderly residents who were handed their historical title deeds at the Athlone stadium on Monday 16 September. Some of them have been waiting for more than 20 years. The recipients hail from areas such as Wallacedene, Langa, Atlantis, Joe Slovo, Kleinvlei, Wesbank and Mfuleni. One of the elated recipients was 79-yearold Paul Oostenhuizen, a resident from Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plain. The acting Mayco member for human settlements, Felicity Purchase said the City is
making every effort to expedite the handing over of title deeds. “There are various challenges which delay the handover of historical title deeds,” said Purchase. “These houses were handed over to beneficiaries as far back as 20 years ago, during a previous administration, where at the time, the priority was the construction. The performance targets did not include the delivery of the actual legal transfers.” She added delays can be due to the misalignment of erf numbers to the housing subsidy
system, the fact that some of the beneficiaries are difficult to trace; and determining lawful and illegal occupation of houses can also provide problems along the way. Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg said the event was the City’s way of empowering residents who were previously denied access to property ownership. “The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones,” he said. He added there is no greater pride than taking care of a house that a person can call their own and turn it into a home.
Twigg added the issue of housing and the well-being of senior citizens is of utmost importance to the City. “Today, many families still live as tenants or without ownership rights in houses they have lived in for generations. “Handing over the title deeds is a way in which the City is able to rectify the injustices of the past,” he said. He added that service delivery is about improving the lives of people and adding value to their lives. According to him, the handing of title deeds is part of the City’s commitment to building a caring city. “Owning a home for many residents is something that they only dreamed of. We are pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality,” he said.

Plant a tree and breathe ... SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
P
eople do not need to go to the beach when they want to relax, they can sit under the trees and breathe in the same fresh air. These were the words of Adriaan Gradwell, principal of Mary Harding School, during a tree planting ceremony held at the school on Wednesday 18 September. The event, which was also attended by the executive mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, was part of the mayoral activities undertaken during Arbor Month. During September, Plato and members of the City’s department of recreation and parks have embarked on a series of tree planting activities across the City. Their aim is to plant more than 1000 indigenous trees and plants across the city during
Arbor Month. One of the sites identified by the City was Mary Harding School in Athlone. The school takes care of learners from Grade R to Grade 5 with mental and intellectual challenges. They currently have 294 learners. Gradwell thanked the City for choosing their school and described the donation of trees as a “wonderful gesture.” “This is brilliant of the mayor to come to a school in a community such as Athlone and plant some trees, because in most cases we are neglected when it comes to things like this (recreational activities),” he said. He expressed events such as this one tend to be held in more affluent areas. He said the event also encourages the learners to take care of the environment . He also thanked the mayor’s office for
Simone Carelse, Dan Plato, Patricia van der Ross and Adriaan Gradwell.
getting the learners involved. Some of the learners travelled with the mayor to the City’s nursery in Newlands to choose and fetch the trees that were later planted at the school. In a statement, Plato said it is vital to get young people interested in the environment, since they will be the ones who will be looking after the parks and recreational spaces in the future. “By involving them in the planting of trees, we help them understand the importance of being aware of and looking after their sur-
roundings,” he said. This year’s theme for Arbor Month was “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. The campaign wanted to raise awareness of the importance of South Africa’s indigenous forests and promote sustainable cities. Plato added that Arbor Month played an important role in the greening of open spaces. According to him, the tree planting activities they have embarked on were part of his “back-to-basics” campaign which is aimed at focusing on getting basic service delivery right.

Foundation gives room to dream NETTALIE VILJOEN

“W
hen I am asked what it is that drew me to working with children, I tell people that their joy and their resilience is driven by their sense of wonder, all too often forgotten in adulthood,” says Prof Alan Davidson, head of haematology-oncology at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Davidson was speaking at Reach for a Dream’s formal handover of two new “Dream Rooms” – a revamped day room in the oncology ward and a playroom in the surgical ward – on Wednesday 18 September. The rooms offer children, and parents, a safe space to go and escape from their clinical surroundings. Big Concerts and Reach For A Dream joined forces to create the first of these rooms in Cape Town children’s hospitals. Heidi Rowley, Western Cape branch manager for Reach for a Dream, says here the children can have fun, read and play. “Eventually, there will be 30 such rooms at hospitals which provide critical care to children with lifethreatening illnesses between the ages of three and 18.” Rowley says the foundation aims to take children out into a new environment with their families to create “dream experiences”.
“But for those who rely on constant treatment and observation, it’s impossible to step out of the hospital, which is why the Dream Room concept is so important,” she explains. Justin van Wyk, chief executive officer of Big Concerts, and his wife Karen say the initiative is close to their hearts. The promoter of live entertainment events has supported the foundation since 2015 when it made two children’s dream to attend a One Direction concert come true. But the Van Wyks’s involvement became a lot more personal when their daughter, Annabelle (now 5), was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of three and a half. “We had just moved to our new home. Adrian (now 7) and Annabelle were so excited about having their own rooms for the first time. Then Annabelle was diagnosed. A day later, she was admitted to Red Cross hospital. We went from this warm and fuzzy environment to a clinical one, just like that.” Justin says the experience was scary. They spent three weeks in hospital followed by another six weeks a year later. “When Mervyn Serebro (national chairman for the foundation) announced the Dream Room initiative at the gala event last year, it resonated with me and Karen,” he says.
In addition to the two Dream Rooms, the reception area at the oncology ward also got a makeover. It now boasts a colourful play area complete with brand new chairs, tables and toys. When it comes to the surgical ward’s new playroom (which includes an Xbox), Sister Nomsa Nxu, operational manager: nursing, says she is not sure who was more thrilled: her or the children. “The Dream Room’s purpose is twofold. Yes, it’s for the children, but it is also a place where tired moms, who often stay up the whole night – worrying about their children – can go to rest for a bit.” The handover comes hot on the heels of the upgrade of the oncologyhaematology unit at the hospital. The unit now sports state-of-theart ECG monitors, private consulting rooms and isolation areas for vulnerable patients, as well as a counselling room for a social worker. It also includes fully equipped ablution facilities for families, a renovated filing room and a bigger nurses’ tea room. Big Concerts also contributed generously to this project driven by the Children’s Hospital Trust (CHT). New boats to keep poachers at bay NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
I
n an attempt to help save and protect marine life, the City of Cape Town launched three new custom-designed boats on Wednesday 18 September. After the launch, the multimillion-rand inflatable vessels underwent a two-hourlong test at the Ocean Power Boat Club in Green Point. The marine and environmental law enforcement unit now has eight rubber ducks in their fleet of watercraft. These boats enhance the work of the marine and coastal law enforcement – which focuses on antipoaching, lifesaving and other criminal activities along the coast. The project had been in the pipeline since February this year when Stingray Marine manufacturers in Kraaifontein started designing the boats. Mike Bradley, the managing director of Stingray, says the boats are built with hightech materials according to the international guidelines for law enforcement and military vessels. “This philosophy increases capability, durability, and survivability,” he says. Due to quality designs of these boats, Bradley says unlike a normal boat, that takes about a week to build, these took them four months each to complete. Selwyn de Wet, City’s marine principal officer, says having custom made boats aim to accommodate the nature of the work done by the marine staff, providing them with safer and faster models. He says one of the key components in the new boats is the anti-burst that prevents the boat from sinking when stroked by sharp objects or shot at. It also has advanced anti-fire protection. After a couple of rides, the City officials were satisfied with the quality and performances of the boat. They vowed their readiness to tackle the “critical” poaching problem and reducing the number of fatal incidents during peak season. Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith says fighting poaching is critical, and with the new addition to their fleet of rubber ducks, this unit can further expand their reach. He says these boats are lighter, stealthier and can cut through “choppy” water and waves, making chasing down poachers easier.

Gas extraction project in full swing T
he landfill gas flaring project at the Coastal Park landfill facility in Muizenberg has been firing on all cylinders since it was launched about 18 months ago. This project is aimed at destroying methane gas that is produced by the landfill, and converting this to less harmful carbon dioxide and energy. To date methane, equivalent to about 138 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, has been destroyed at the landfill. World Ozone Day was commemorated on Monday 16 September and it was a time to once again do a health check on the ozone layer, its depletion and what can be done differently to further protect it. The ozone layer acts as an invisible shield and protects people from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun “Methane gas, which is present in the landfill, has a global warming potential approximately 25 times greater than carbon dioxide. Not only does this offset carbon emissions, but gas that is converted to energy can be used to fuel a variety of operations,” said Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg. She said the City is committed to reducing its carbon footprint from municipal infra-
structure and services, by rolling out this project at other City landfill sites in 18-months’ time. Methane is a highly combustible gas that can be collected and used as a heating fuel, to generate electricity or as a fuel for vehicles. The gas extraction and flaring systems have been established at Coastal Park and Bellville South landfills, and a similar system will be constructed at the Vissershok South landfill. The Coastal Park landfill gas Phase 2 of the landfill gas flaring project in underway. extraction project has yielded a number of successes since its inception: been established which is used to generate . countries to implement approved carbon offsetting projects, which developed countries may invest in by purchasing “carbon credits”. The City has now initiated the tender process to realise phase 2 of the project where the infrastructure will be extended to the other landfills. “The destruction of this greenhouse gas, which is a major contributor to global warming, assists not only the City but contributes to national climate change mitigation goals,” said Limberg. Methane gas in landfills is created when organic matter decomposes. Therefore, the City is working to reduce volumes of organic waste sent to landfill sites through a number of programmes, including the Home Composting container rollout, which encourages residents to make use of organic waste for their green spaces. avenue open to them in the magic and illusion industry is that of the ambiguous temptress, standing on the side. But they don’t want to be the one just holding the props or even being the prop. So they begin to believe magic isn’t for girls.” Naidoo, director of the college’s latest production, World of Magic!, is living proof that nothing is further from the truth. The full-time Arts in Film and Television, Psychology and Organisational Psychology student is in her final year at the University of Cape Town. She says her participation in the college’s six-year training programme played a huge role in her decision to pursue a career in entertainment. “The college offers a range of courses. One of them is theatre production which focuses more on the technical side, for example, editing and lighting. My training taught me so many skills and it opened my eyes to the opportunities in the industry.” She says the understanding of how to create a guided and immersive experience is one of the greatest lessons taught to students at the college. “Modern technology and social media have caused us as a society to become distant from one another. But people still crave that feeling of being connected, of being immersed in the moment. With the knowledge I’ve gained, I hope to create that holistic experience for audiences.” So, for her, the reward for heading up this new show as its director is twofold. Besides crafting a magical journey for audiences,
she also has the chance to transform the roles of women in the male-dominated magic industry. “We specialise in making the impossible possible at the College of Magic. Having spent years training under the tutelage of strong female magicians, I relished the opportunity to help our young girls find their own voice and performance styles.” The show’s diverse cast features some of the Mother City’s exceptional entertainers, illusionists, clowns and jugglers, all between the ages of 10 and 16. It promises to whisk the audience through a fantastical world filled with illusions, magic, hilarious antics and fun-filled fantasy. When Naidoo and her then codirector, Michelle Gore, were given the task to put together the production at the beginning of the year, they decided to recreate that sense of childlike wonder. Gore withdrew from the project in August to finish her PhD studies in atmospheric sciences at the Tenn State University in the United States of America (USA). “By taking the audience on a journey through the different worlds of magic, the show reminds you what it felt like when everything was still new and exciting; when your desire to explore was bigger than the fear of the unknown,” says Naidoo. Catch the show at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 6 October at 14:00 and 16:30. Tickets are R165 with discounts for family bookings available. Book at Computicket. Strong melodies, sensitivity and improvisation at play Shannon Mowday, a celebrated jazz soloist and composer, masterfully blends sounds of Africa and Scandinavia in her production, Lila for one night only at Jazz at the Nassau. The Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Jazz (2007), has united musicians with whom she has worked since moving to Norway in 2009, each with a very unique musical identity. The production’s musicians include Mowday (soprano, alto, baritone and bass saxes, bass and contra-alto clarinet, composition), Helge Lien (piano), Johannes Eick (six-string acoustic bass), Erik Nylander (drums) and Asle Karstad (sound design). Supported by Norway Music, Lila had its debut performance on the Oslo Jazz Festival this year, followed by performances in Norway and South Africa. Through the art of spontaneous “play”, the musicians seek to find both common ground in expression and also explore beyond borders of musical genres or expectations of style. Mowday’s playing is a combination of power and high energy juxtaposed with sensitivity. Her unique compositions reflect
her travels, her South African roots and extensive musical experience; drawing from nature, folklore, life experience and also presenting important issues for social discourse. Internationally acclaimed Lien, known for his distinctive sound, is one of the most exciting young voices to come out of the Scandinavian music scene. Eick’s unique expression and sound, playing six-string upright bass, is unparalleled. He has been an essential part of the Norwegian improvised music scene. Nylander has also worked in African projects such as Monoswezi and Mote (with Mowday and Dizu Plaatjies). Catch Lila on Sunday 29 September at 19:30 at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School, Palmyra Road, Newlands, Cape Town. As there is only one performance in Cape Town, it is suggested to book early, as seating is limited. Tickets cost R150 each. Students pay R50. V For more information or to book tickets, call Cliff Wallis on 021 761 2726 or 076 401 0008 or email cliffwallis@gmail.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.

Athletes enjoy fast, flat, fun race RASHIED ISAACS
M
SA Multisport held their third annual league race on Sunday 22 September through the streets of Kenwyn and Wynberg. The race is labelled the “triple F” – fast, flat and fun. The race catered for distances of 5km and 10km. Just over 1 500 participants were blessed with cool weather; with Raydon Balie (30:34) of Eerste River and Langa’s Pamela Moyikwa (39:02) using it to their advantage to beat a top field of runners in the open categories.
The Langa club have been consistently sharing the podium of late with the most noticeable addition to the club, Fortunate Chidzivo, who smashed the Cape Town marathon 10km course record last week, Sunday 15 September. The MSA race is a start of a series of races lined up for this week on the Western Province Athletics calendar with the Nantes Athletics Club poised to host their annual race on Tuesday 24 September, and Goodwood Harriers ending off a festival of running on Saturday 27 September. Here are a few snaps from Sunday’s race in Wynberg.

CPUT ladies’ soccer team entertained the crowd with scintillating football displays during a nail-biting final against UWC, which the hosts won 1-0.
UCT triumphant in intervarsity tournament Hundreds of students braved the weekend’s inclement weather to attend the annual Western Cape Intervarsity games hosted by Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) at their Bellville Campus. The tournament saw CPUT, the University of Western Cape (UWC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (US) and Varsity College putting each other through their paces in sports such as soccer, basketball, water polo, table tennis, badminton, fencing, ulti-
mate frisbee and tennis. The chilly and rainy weather disrupted outdoor codes such as cricket, netball, beach volleyball and tennis. Last year’s overall champions, US relinquished their title to this year’s champions, UCT, who won the event, scoring 50 points. Stellenbosch was second with 45 points and UWC came third with 30 points. CPUT, which dominated soccer as both their men’s and ladies’ teams won the finals, came fourth with 26 points and Varsi-
ty College fifth with 13 points. The tournament started in 2016 and was held at UWC, while CPUT hosted it for the first time this year. CPUT sports and culture manager, Siyabulela Mkwalo, said: “I am very excited with what we achieved today despite the bad weather. We are disappointed that we had to cancel some sporting codes. Overall, I am happy we have achieved the strategic objectives of the event which was to create a platform for the students to have fun and
enjoyment. The best team won, although the tournament was not about winning but participation,” said Mkwalo. CPUT men’s soccer team captain, Bongumusa Mbali, said winning the soccer section of the tournament can open doors for them and hopes that the CPUT management will increase their support for the team. “I’m very grateful for the guys that played and those who didn’t play for the support we got both from the CPUT team and other teams,” said Bongumusa.
