a part of Breastfeeding Week. He says the CDC is doing daily breastfeeding promotion talks. It works with its partners to promote the importance of breastfeeding and to make its service more responsive to any queries service users may have. Hub to boost SMMEs The City of Cape Town has officially opened a business hub at Strand Street Concourse, which was launched on Thursday 8 August. According to a statement, the hub which will be run by the Enterprise Development Unit is aimed to be a one-stop-shop for business support services to help reduce the administrative barriers accessible to small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs). Mayor Dan Plato says: “Through this centre, we want to contribute towards a business-friendly environment where we will reduce barriers and other red tape measures.” James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, says the hub is a platform for designing solutions that will make small businesses more competitive and resilient. Vos says the City is committed to growing the economy and has been working with SMMEs and partner organisations for many years to ensure that this important part of the economy thrives. “SMMEs are the lifeblood of cities and the engines that fuel economic growth,” he says. .

ape Town Central Police detectives find closure in solving cases and knowing justice has been served. This is according to Warrant Officer Shaun Bardien following the sentencing of the murderers of Eric Wiese, who was killed at his home in Higgovale in August 2017. Judge Taswell Papier of the Western Cape High Court found the suspects Vuyolwethu Mgemane and his accomplice, Nomfundo Mtshawu, guilty of murder, housebreaking with intent to rob, and aggravated robbery on Thursday 1 August. Mgemane (34) received life imprisonment for murder and 15 years for housebreaking and robbery. Mtshawu (30) was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for murder and 10 years imprisonment for robberies. Bardien says the victory was due to an in-

tense investigation and teamwork between the police, the forensic team, the National Prosecuting Authorities and the community of Gugulethu. He says all teams worked tirelessly for the first few days after Wiese’s body was found, and police received leads to follow up on. “He had surveillance cameras which helped us identify the two suspects as they appeared climbing the wall to access his house. “In the beginning, we had confusion as the female suspect looked like a man, and the evidence from the forensics showed fingerprints of a woman,” he says. Bardien says the search was set in motion when officers began following leads on Mtshawu, which led to Gugulethu. “My partner (Detective Warrant Officer Abraham Draai) and I spent days, knocking at people’s doors. We were sent from one address to the other, but we were determined to use every resource and time we had to

find these two. Eventually, I received a call from Gugulethu Police Station saying they had identified the suspects and we quickly made the arrests,” says Bardien. He says seeing them being sentenced gave him peace. “I know it will not bring him back, but I believe the family found closure. And for me, with every case I solve, I get happy, knowing that justice has been served and the suspect is not coming back to our community,” says Bardien. He says the life sentence was well deserved by Mgemane, who allegedly showed no remorse during the court proceedings. He says the victim was a defenceless citizen who was loved by his family and did not deserve to be killed brutally. He thanked everyone who worked on the case. Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for Cape Town Central Police, said the station commend the team for the job well done.

Business as usual at cableway NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Table Mountain Cableway is back in business. It opened on Monday 12 August, a week earlier than expected. Annual maintenance and routine checks, begun on Monday 8 July, was scheduled for completion on Monday 19 August. Managing director Wahida Parker announced the reopening of the cableway at a media briefing at the popular tourist destination on Wednesday 7 August. She invites guests to visit and enjoy the views once again. Parker applauds the team of technicians for their good work and for finishing ahead of schedule. She says the annual maintenance is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and to abide by the rules regulating the cableway. “Annual maintenance is non-negotiable and ensures we can continue to safely and efficiently showcase our beautiful mountain to more than one million visitors each year – a responsibility and honour that we do not take lightly,” Parker says. Technicians say the work went smoothly despite unpredictable weather. Technical manager Emile Streicher says they replaced the heel and haul ropes, and also tested and replaced the load-bearing components on the cabins. The mechanical overhaul of the rotating floors and cabin door mechanisms in the cable cars were also completed, as well as the maintenance of the hydraulic and brake system. He attributes the good work to great team spirit from all who were involved. Telling her story through art NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

nspired by the hardships she faced from an early age, Nobukho Nqaba (27) hopes her story will serve as a reminder of the poverty endured by so many South Africans. Her exhibit, called “Izicwangciso Zezethu” (We make plans), is on show at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in V&A Waterfront until Sunday 20 October. Nqaba’s creations portray the lives of ordinary citizens striving to make ends meet. In her art, she uses China bags – a type of bag used in the olden days by men who left their

homes to find jobs in the cities. She also incorporates materials such as overalls and old-fashioned blankets. She says these items were part her life for many years, from when her parents moved from their home in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape to Grabouw and then to Khayelitsha, where she joined them. “This was the typical life of a workingclass family from an underprivileged background. We had to constantly move from one place to another,” Nqaba says. She remembers that once they moved because her family lost all their belongings in a fire at the informal settlement in Grabouw where they lived. “I still remember it like it was yesterday. There was a fire, a common thing in the informal settlement. “We moved our furniture out of our shack, thinking it would be safe, but before we knew it the fire engulfed the whole area and we were left with nothing,” recalls Nqaba.

Seeing the light She enrolled as a fine arts student at the University of Cape Town (UCT). When her life got better and she and her siblings found their feet, she moved to Woodstock, a place she currently calls a home “away from home”. And she is at peace, doing what she loves, designing different types of art. Talking about the meaning behind her work, she says people

often take the role the working class plays for granted. “I want to remind people that every job is important. Whether you are dressed in a smart suit or a blue overall, you are contributing to society. I also want people to remember where we come from, what mattered to us. These things are our legacy.” Nqaba says the theme was inspired by the realisation that nobody chooses their journey in life. People make plans not knowing what the outcome will be. This is Nqaba’s first solo gig since she graduated in 2012. “I have been featured in other people’s exhibitions. It has been difficult to find recognition locally. My work is mostly recognised outside South Africa and it feels good to finally be offered this platform.”

Cape Town streets tickled pink T

he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille

Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my title today. The vibe

PinkDrive was present at each event offering free clinical breast examinations and educating on
