etting the look you want is now only a click away thanks to a Newlands resident who has designed an application that is taking the beauty industry by storm. Managing director of Primu Infotech Thuli Hlongwane launched the Prim-U App that makes it easy for clients to book for their pampering sessions without wasting time or moving off their couch. Hlongwane is no stranger to the information and technology world. She has over 20

years experience in the industry and has worked for various companies including Old Mutual, Woolworths and Pearson South Africa, to mention but a few. This technology platform, Prim-U, is available nationwide. It connects salon or spa owners with capacity to entrepreneurs or freelancer providers in massage beauty nails (referred to as primlancers) to offer their services to customers looking for good quality services at competitive prices, excellent customer service that will promote customer loyalty and a location that will assure convenience to freelancers and their cus-

tomers. Hlongwane believes one should not struggle to get the services they want, and the app is the best tool to get the best services at your fingertips. Fuelled by the love of convenience and not being so much of a fan of being in long queues in the salon or just getting out to get the services drove her to start this app. “I’m not the person to stand in queues and I don’t like being inconvenienced. Being in the salon and waiting for long and not knowing when you will get the service is just not for me. I love a good massage from time to time. So, with that in mind, I had to think of something that will make my life easier and still get the service that I want and that gave birth to the app,” says Hlongwane. The app has been running as a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) since last year and they are yet to launch it officially. The app is available on Google Play store, IOS and on the website. They went live with an updated version a few weeks ago and they will be training about 150 of their service providers on the new platform. Through the app, a client can book a nail therapist, make-up artist or hairdresser close to where they live as matching is based on geographic location. “The idea is to save as much time and get the best service closer to you. The app will connect you with the service provider closer to you

Prim-U managing director Thuli Hlongwane. and you get things done quickly. The app is for everyone and it will make things easy while maintaining your best look. “This platform will benefit the already established businesses as well as freelancers (prim-lancers) to maximise their profits by exposing them to new and returning customers. The allocated space for salons and spas will also be better utilised by making space available to prim-lancers during the periods that they are not busy or providing a service to their own customers or after hours. “The prim-lancers can also work flexible hours and take appointments at a convenient time for their customers,” she says. Though it might seem easy for her because of experience, Hlongwane says it is not easy and there is so much work that still needs to be done. For her, it was also tricky as this was the first and she didn’t have other beauty apps that she can use as a reference. “Now we see other people are coming with apps similar to this one. I didn’t have someone to look up to and I’m glad that it worked. The app is gaining momentum,” she says. V For more information visit http://www.prim-u.com/

KENILWORTH

Learn to look after trees TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

T

reeKeepers are planning a walkabout with an arborist to educate their members about trees so that they are better equipped to look after their own trees and to answer questions and educate friends and neighbours. TreeKeepers is a non-profit organisation of concerned citizens based in Kenilworth aimed at advocacy and education to maintain and conserve large, mature trees on public streets, parks and private properties in Cape Town. They intend to increase the tree canopy. Henk Egberink, treasurer of TreeKeepers, says they are constantly fighting people who consider trees dispensable and ignore

Trees come with a lot of benefits.

the fact that the City’s department of Parks and Recreation are the custodian of all trees in public areas. “Even pruning these trees requires permission. The casual remark is that we can always plant more. The current drought has made tree planting an expensive and onerous exercise and made us emphasise the conservation of mature trees, irrespective of them being exotic or indigenous. “Large, mature trees provide measurable health benefits by sequestering carbon dioxide, releasing oxygen, reducing temperatures through creating shade and moisture in the atmosphere, cleanse the air of pollutants, lower noise pollution and reduce overall stress,” he says. He added that at the same time the roots stabilise the soil and slow the ground water-

flow, thus reducing erosion. Egberink says what they have discovered is that people don’t seem to care about trees, yet they have enormous benefits. “People don’t know enough about trees. The aim of the walkabout is to improve their knowledge and how they can better look after trees,” he says. Mentioning some of the benefits for trees, Egberink says they give shade and they green and beautify the streets and homes. “People have a lot to learn about trees. Some of the things they don’t know is that it adds value to properties. It provides tranquil places for relaxation and enjoyment. Trees have a huge benefit and we need to educate each other,” he says. In the last couple of months, the City of Cape Town has been struggling with trees that have had their barks stripped off. Egberink has encouraged people not to do that. “That stresses the tree out and it will not be able to grow properly, it will eventually die. People must learn to treat trees the way they treat their children or themselves because trees also get stressed out,” he says, adding that they are working with the City’s Department of Parks and Recreation to ensure that trees are protected and not bark stripped. He concluded by saying residents should be active citizens and report when they see someone cutting a tree in the wrong way. “You just don’t cut a tree; one must have permission. If you see someone cutting a tree, ask them if they have a permit if they can’t provide it, tell them to stop and report it immediately. Our trees are under so much stress with this fibre as well, they are cut anyhow. Our aim is to educate people,” he says. They have monthly meetings on the last Wednesday of the month at 12:30 at the Newlands Nursery. V To learn more about trees or how to report when someone is doing something wrong to a tree visit http://treekeeperscapetown.org.za or their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/TreekeepersCapeTown.

Club shakes things up for learners TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

he Milkshake Club had yet another inspiring networking session at their usual spot at the Vineyard Hotel last Wednesday. The club hosts networking sessions for organisations, business and learners from Fairmont High School in Parkwood so that they can learn from each other. Run by Sharon Constable and Malcolm Lips from Business Matter in Claremont, the club has been running for about 10 months and it has been opened up for learners for about five months now. The idea is to expose learners to different career options and give them a platform where they can learn from others and be guided. Though it is open for organisations and businesses the focus is on the learners and how to improve the community. Lips says their networking session are much needed and everyone needs guidance now and again. “The sessions have been going Christo Lodder from Eyecatcher Promotions interacting with extremely well and everyone seems to be enjoying. We are extremely very inspiring. “We were first invited last grateful to the Vineyard Hotel staff that are month and they told us we would learn a lot always there to help us and make us the best from other organisations and business peomilkshakes,” he says, adding that the ple. “That for me is very important. The youth also need platforms to meet and mingle. “We took one of our kids there and she couldn’t stop raving about the club. This just shows the impact the club has. This is a worthy platform for our youth to learn from,” she says. Through the help of Eyecatcher Promotions, the club launched The 5 Pens Campaign to collect as many pens as they can to distribute to schools and other underprivileged children. Christo Lodder from Eyecatcher says they want to collect more than 1000 pens in two months. “We are inviting everyone who comes to the club to bring at least five pens each. To some people a pen might just be a pen but for those in need it is a symbol of hope. So, through the campaign we want to give that hope and we want everyone to jump on board and help us,” he says. The Milkshake Club meets at the Vineyard Hotel every last Wednesday of the month from 16:00 to 18:00.
