h, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.” The 1977 hit of the Bee Gees wouldn’t be one’s first guess if asked what music a group of Grade 12s would be listening to but that was the song blaring out in Oude Molen Technical High School’s library last week. It turns out that “Stayin’ Alive” has the perfect beat for administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and is the obvious soundtrack choice when teaching learners this life-saving technique. The first-aid training forms part of a pilot anti-bullying programme being held at the Pinelands school. A Pinelands police initiative, the project was launched at the beginning of this year in partnership with Metro Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Victim Support and the Western Cape Department of Education.

Building better relationships Constable Quinton George, a driving force behind the initiative, explains: “The programme aims to empower youth and to build better relationships between communities and emergency response units.” In the first term, K9 searches of the premises and research were done to determine the exact safety needs at Oude Molen Technical High School. The Victim Outreach department introduced its services to the learners in the second term. At present Metro EMS is doing the first-aid training for Grade 12s and CPR training for Grade 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s. The Narcotics department will visit the school in September and next term the Film and Publication Board (FPB) will focus on the dangers of cyberbullying. The first-aid training was started in the first week of August. Grades 8 to 11 learners will undergo the hands-only CPR training while Grade 12 learners will receive the Emergency First Aid Responder Training (EFAR). On completion of the course, Grade 12s will be issued with a credit certificate which is valid for two years. “An EFAR course usually costs about R1 500 to R2 000 but it is offered for free because we are passionate about empowering our youth. This also gives them something to put on their CV when they apply for enrol-

ment at tertiary institutions or for jobs next year,” says George.
Taught to make a difference Estelle Thomas was instrumental in getting the project off the ground. She is a qualified rescue technician and a lecturer at Western Cape Government EMS College, focused on staff development at the Pinelands base.

“I’ve been trying to set up a programme like this since 2016. I am passionate about giving back to the community. That is why I became a medical/rescue responder in the first place.” Thomas (50) says she sees this project as her legacy and she would like to see it well established before she retires. “Yes, we teach learners about first-aid, but they also learn a much more valuable lesson. We
teach them that they matter; that they can make a difference; that they can save a life.” She says programmes like these can help learners realise there is more to life than the crime and hardships they are confronted with every day. “They may not think so, but they have the world at their feet. If they work hard and do well at school they can achieve so much,” she says. V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 Besides boosting learners’ self-confidence and sense of self-worth, the training also teaches learners the value of life, says Adiel de Villiers, a basic life support logistics officer who gives of his own free time to assist
with the training. “I grew up in the Cape Flats. I saw all these things some kids experience daily. Training like this shows them they can play a big role in their communities. Even if they only phone for an ambulance, they can give someone the hope to survive.” Response from teachers and learners at Oude Molen Technical High School has been very positive. Principal Fatima Khan says she was very excited when Pinelands police and Metro EMS asked if they could hold first-aid training courses at the school. “I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity. Especially for our Grade 12’s. The learners are happy with what they have learnt and they are impressed with what they now know they can do. “We have also received a long-term com-
mitment from them. This year’s Grade 11s will receive the EFAR training next year, and so on. Thomas said she would do this until she retires, and by the looks of her, seeing her energy, I don’t think that will be anytime soon,” says Khan.
‘It changed my perspective’ One of the matrics, Grade 12DC class captain Saadiq Sanders attended the training and says it left him feeling more confident. “This has been a positive experience for me. I’ve learnt so much. It also changed my perspective of the police and ambulance drivers. People sometimes complain that it takes up to an hour for police or an ambulance to respond to a call. But now that I know some of the challenges they face – staff shortages, multiple call-outs at the same time – I realise that they are human too.”

he IIE’s Varsity College Cape Town campus spearheaded five Mandela Day initiatives, on and off-campus, to celebrate 67 Minutes for Mandela. “We are so grateful to be able to give back to our communities. Words cannot describe our sincere gratitude to all staff, students and sponsors for every donation made. What a fulfilling experience,” says Saleem Jackson, the college campus principal. The first initiative kicked off at the Loaves and Fishes Shelter for adults on 15 July. A team of 16 students painted two of the rooms at the premises.

A donation drive was held on campus weeks before during which students, staff and sponsors donated generously. On 16 July, staff and students packed a total of 19 656 meals for Rise Against Hunger, an international hunger relief non-profit organisation (NPO) that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food to people in developing nations, Students revamped the Lucas Mbebe Educare Centre in Gugulethu on 17 July. The Early Childhood Development centre cares for more than 113 children between the ages of two to six.
Next on the list of good causes was the Leliebloem children’s home in Athlone. Staff and students painted three of the Lelie- bloem Children’s Home boys’ rooms and they also donated pots, pans and plastic containers to the home on 18 July. The last of the five Mandela Day initiatives took place at the SOS Children’s Home in Thornton on 19 July. The home was in dire need of a library revamp, a space where their 80 kids, aged three to 18, can obtain books and use a place to study. Staff and students painted two bedrooms and donated pots and pans.

he Chrysalis Youth Academy (CA) celebrated the graduation of 211 male students on Saturday 3 August at the academy’s premises on Porter Estate, Tokai. Shortly after, on Monday 5 August, the graduates stepped into a 12-month internship at a placement organisation close to their homes. The Western Cape minister of community safety Albert Fritz was the keynote speaker at the event. “I’m incredibly proud of each and every single graduate of the Alpha 19 course. They have turned their lives around and are now leaders among their peers,” said Fritz. He added that the academy produces young leaders and highlighted two beacons of hope. “Firstly, we have Roderick George from Lavender Hill. He was a student in 2013 and is now one of our senior instructors. He is known for being a fast runner, and for being passionate about youth development. Secondly, we have Tshepiso Lesoetsa from Nyanga. Lesoetsa is known for being a keen and hardworking student who studied to become a peace officer.” Fritz added that his relationship with the academy went back a long way, to when he was previously the provincial minister for community safety between 2010 and 2011. “Chrysalis holds a special place in my heart because I have seen over the years the life-changing experience it has been for so many young men and women.” Fritz said that youth academies like CA are becoming more critical to guide young people through the challenges they face. “In South Africa, the youth unemployment rate is as high as 52%. Chrysalis is helping to break this vicious cycle which en-
traps and takes opportunities away from the youth,” he said. Provincial minister for social development Sharna Fernandez, as well as the former chief whip of the DA and founder of CA, Mark Wiley, also attended the event. CA students hail from across the province, including Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain,
Hanover Park, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Beaufort West, Leeu Gamka, Vredendal and Saldanha. For three months, they are accommodated at the Porter Estate while they complete the 19 Alpha course. Graduates of the programme received training in office administration, computer literacy, sports leader-
ship, basic cookery, public safety, peace officer’s training, youth development, welding and electrical circuitry as well as fire fighting. CA has an average intake of 220 young people every three months. More than 9 000 young people have graduated since 2000. The Alpha 19 course for female students will start on Saturday 31 August.

able Mountain Cableway is back in business. It opened on Monday 12 August, a week earlier than expected. Annual maintenance and routine checks, begun on Monday 8 July, was scheduled for completion on Monday 19 August. Managing director Wahida Parker announced the reopening of the cableway at a media briefing at the popular tourist destination on Wednesday 7 August. She invites guests to visit
and enjoy the views once again. She applauds the team of technicians for their good work and for finishing ahead of schedule. She says the annual maintenance is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and to abide by the rules regulating the cableway. “Annual maintenance is non-negotiable and ensures we can continue to safely and efficiently showcase our beautiful mountain to more than one million visitors each year – a responsibility and honour that we do not take lightly,” Parker says. Technicians say the work
went smoothly despite unpredictable weather. Technical manager Emile Streicher says they replaced the heel and haul ropes, and also tested and replaced the loadbearing components on the cabins. The mechanical overhaul of the rotating floors and cabin door mechanisms in the cable cars were also completed, as well as the maintenance of the hydraulic and brake system. He attributes the good work to great team spirit from all who were involved.

Four City sites put forward for reinvention T
he City of Cape Town is considering making available four underused City-owned sites to the private sector for carbon-neutral mixed-use. The underused sites are located close to public transport services in Athlone, Mitchell’s Plain, Diep River, and Goodwood, and could also be repurposed for transit-oriented development. The proposal is the result of the City’s participation in the second round of the C40 Reinventing Cities Programme, a worldwide competition for carbon-neutral developments. The purpose of the programme is to transform underused urban sites into beacons of zero carbon emissions and resilient development. The second round of the C40 Reinventing Cities Programme will be launched in Copenhagen in October this year. The City has asked Capetonians to comment on the proposal and to submit their feedback by 8 September. “Also, we want to see proposals that address urban sustainability and include features that will address water and energy conservation,” said Marian Nieuwoudt, Mayco member for spatial planning and environment. The proposed sites are: . Athlone station car park opposite the entrance to the Athlone train station. This site comprises of 3.7ha. Apart from being close to the station, the area is well-served by minibus-taxis and about 8km from the Cape Town central business district. . Kapteinsklip station precinct in Mitchell’s Plain. It is located to the north and south of Baden Powell Drive at the intersections of Eisleben and Weltevreden roads. It comprises of 30.6ha. The site includes underused car parks and undeveloped open spaces and is located on the False Bay coast close to the

thank the Lord for my life today, because I could have been gone.” These were the words of a visibly emotional Mary Bruce. The Hanover Park resident shared her story at a media briefing, organised by the provincial health department and Groote Schuur Hospital, on Thursday 8 August. Themed “Gun Shot Injuries at Groote Schuur Hospital Trauma Centre”, the event cast a spotlight on the challenges the hospital faced daily in caring for gunshot patients. Bruce (48) told reporters what happened on Sunday 7 July, the day she was shot. “I was busy hanging washing when I heard gunshots,” she said. When she turned around, she was hit by a bullet in her left leg. Bruce was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital where she underwent operations on her leg. She is currently in a wheelchair but she is positive she will make a full recovery. “I do believe I will be able to walk again,” she said. She thanked the hospital staff for their care during her stay. She also called on authorities to strengthen measures to rehabilitate teenagers who were involved in drugs and gangsterism. She did not reveal too many details about the person who shot her. All she said was she believed the perpetrator was not older than 17. Bruce was joined by various officials from the provincial department of health, which included the provincial minister of health Dr Nomafrench Mbombo and Professor Andy Nicol, head of the trauma centre at the hospital.
Women celebrate fearless womanhood A sold-out event meant a considerable donation to the beneficiaries of the Fearlessly Female Women’s Day Event hosted at Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Kuilsriver on Friday 9 August. The event was presented by TygerBurger, a sister publication of People’s Post and SpecSavers. The event featured a cooking demonstration by Jenny Morris, a fashion installation by Ruff Tung and the women were kept entertained by local comedian and event MC, Mel Jones. Nicol presented a PowerPoint presentation, outlining the surgery process for a gunshot patient. During his presentation, he commended the Firearm Control Act, saying “it works”. According to Nicol, the hospital admits 36 gunshot patients per month. He also spoke about a growing trend in gunshot wound patients. “In the past, we used to see single-shot gunshot patients, but that has changed,” he explained. Now most are admitted with multiple gunshot wounds. Mbombo lambasted the media for always pointing fingers at the authorities when things go wrong in the health sector. As an example, she mentioned the outcry over patients who were reportedly sleeping on the floor at some Khayelitsha hospitals. She explained the reason for occurrences like these was a decrease in the available budget, which was further depleted by the high cost of violence-related care. She said the department sometimes finds itself in a position where it has to redirect an ambulance that has been sent out. “We are doing battleground medicine. We rob Paul to pay Pauline,” she said, describing instances where some call-outs had to take priority over others due to the severity of injuries. She also discussed the shortage of staff at hospitals which she attributed to the dwindling budget. In a bid to address the rise in gunshot patients, she said the department was conducting external interventions in the classified “red zone areas”. She explained that data will be collected to determine if progress had been made.

Varsity College netball rises to the occasion T he Independent Institute of Education’s (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town netball first team participated in this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament at Witwatersrand University recently. The ladies were off to a victorious start as the girls defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with a 38-31 win. “The girls played fantastically well after being promoted from C to B division. It was important that we got our USSA tour off to a winning start,” says Andrew Howitt, Varsity College Cape Town’s sports coordinator. On the second day of the tournament, the ladies unfortunately lost by the skin of their teeth, 36-35, to the Durban University of
Technology (DUT). On day three the team made a comeback with a convincing 50-33 win against Central University of Technology (CUT). The team lost their opening match on day four, 45-26, to UCT and on the same day, they bounced back by defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a 34-28 win in game two. On the last day of the tournament the team beat the University of Limpopo (UL) with a win of 48-31 in the final match of USSA tour. “As a newly promoted team the odds were stacked against us in a far more competitive division, however, coming forth to some well-established university’s insured that USSA 2019 was a success and by that we were very proud of the team,” concluded Howitt.

he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille
Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my title today. The vibe
