hile retrenchments at the Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation (Shawco) has placed 33 of its permanent staff members in a precarious position, the possible impact the ongoing restructuring process at the non-profit organisation (NPO) might have on vulnerable communities reliant on its services, may affect thousands. At present Shawco’s health programme provides primary healthcare to 5 000 adults and children annually through fully equipped mobile clinics. The organisation has about 3 000 student volunteers run over 15 health and education projects in five Shawco centres as well as other locations around the Cape Metropolitan area. Notices of contemplated retrenchments were issued to all Shawco staff members on 30 August. In a letter dated Wednesday 6 November and addressed to the University and Allied Workers Union (UAWU) official Sandile Mandla, Professor Steve Reid, the interim Shawco board chair, confirmed “it will unfortunately not be possible to continue paying salaries after
November”. In response to a question from People’s Post, asking if all of the 33 staff members would be retrenched, UCT answered that the process would lead to some staff members being retrenched. “However, a number of part-time positions will be filled from January 2020,” it responded. Asked who would take over the management of the NPO’s programmes, UCT said there would still be some administrative staff members to manage Shawco’s initiatives. The university said the health programme would be managed by student volunteers and administrative staff. In a statement released on 12 November, UCT said, Shawco would continue operating as a non-profit organisation but would reduce the level of activities according to available funding. “Despite the current challenges, Shawco’s key activities has been continuing. All the medical activities have continued. However, the educational activities have been reduced. This is normal at this time of year when students are writing exams and winding up towards the end of the year,” the statement read. V Continued on page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 In response to People’s Post query on which education programmes would be kept and which would be discarded, UCT said it was too soon to determine. “Shawco is currently in a transition period and this process requires time to be concluded.” The NPO is the oldest social responsiveness arm of the UCT. It was established in 1943 by Andrew Kinnear, a UCT medical student. Over the past 75 years, the organisation has created the space for thousands of student volunteers to engage in areas of health, education and social entrepreneur-
ship; providing services to several communities including Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Noordhoek, Nyanga, Joe Slovo, Dunoon, Manenberg, Kensington, and Mitchell’s Plain. As a registered NPO under the NonProfit Organisations Act of 71, it has a separate existence from UCT. The university said, like many other NPOs, Shawco is dependent on funding from external sources, in addition to the funds provided by UCT. “As a result of the tough economic climate, the available funding for non-profit organisations has diminished significantly
and Shawco has been affected by this too. This has led to the ongoing restructuring process.” In a statement, UCT said it remained fully committed to supporting the work done by Shawco. “The current situation requires an immediate response and the UCT executive leadership is committed to finding a viable and mutually beneficial solution that will ensure that the legacy of Shawco is preserved.” The statement concluded that UCT wished to rebuild Shawco to be a thriving student-led enterprise.
Join knifemakers in action
Now 11 years later, and with just under 50 members, the guild seeks to imbue the timeless ideals of knifemaking into our technological age. “The ideals for the guild are those of perfection through work, skill through learning, and fellowship through generosity, where we are able to create a knife of the highest order of craftsmanship from a piece of blank steel,” explains Rick Afonso, chairman of the Cape Knifemakers Guild. V For more information visit www.capeknifemakersguild.com.
The annual Cape Knifemakers Guild Show is taking place on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 of November at the Jansen Hall in Jansen Road, Milnerton. This year they have added a forging demonstration, taking visitors through the process of making their own knives. The Cape Knifemakers Guild, which originally started in 2008 with 9 members, was formed to cultivate one of the oldest crafts in the world – knife making.

Curry is completely behind the body positivity cause. “I’m a feminist who wants to challenge toxic masculinity (TM), which I feel has some roots in self-hatred in certain men. And one of the ways we can tackle TM is to show the men out there that you are more than just your body. You are a whole person with thoughts, ideas and dreams,” he says. Discounting the time he was crowned Mr Springfair in his matric year, Curry is a stranger to the catwalk. He is much more used to spending time in a lab, pursuing his PhD in Medical Virology at the University of Cape Town. He says his wife, Ruby Bunjun, told him to enter “because she Lyle Curry is one of 13 full-figured men who will model a new plus-size men’s range at the Radisson RED Hotel, V&A says I’m hot”. “In the end, I decided to enter Waterfront.
because I had nothing to lose if I didn’t get picked,” he says. Curry admits he was nervous at the open casting before he had to go into the hall with the selection panel. “I asked the ‘helper elves’ (Nikki and Sean) three times what to do. I don’t remember feeling anything once I got into the room and started walking. But I felt very comfortable talking to the panel.” His wife was ecstatic when he called her to tell her he was one of the finalists. “Ruby was squealing on the phone when I told her. Afterwards, when she had calmed down, she said, ‘I told you they’d pick you’. All my friends are being very supportive, telling me not to forget them when I’m famous. My mom (Karen Bagarette) was very excited.” The self-confessed nerdy gamer says he is nervously excited about the upcoming fashion show. “I didn’t think what I was auditioning for was this big, the first plus-size men’s fashion show. Wow! What did I get myself into? I feel grateful to be a part of this movement.” Body positivity among plus-size men is slowly gaining momentum, highlighting the need for change in the fashion industry. Curry says there is a lack of well-fitting, plus-size clothes in South Africa. “I have my own sense of style. My most favourite clothing items are those my wife bought me overseas. She goes to international conferences a few times a year and buys T-shirts for me. I find the American sizes fit me better.” The fashion show will be a by-invitationonly event and will be attended by celebrities, personalities, influencers, modelling agents, potential buyers, stakeholders and the media.

Levy explains the event is not a competition so there won’t be any prizes or first, second or third positions. “The #PlusIsEqual campaign aims to mobilise clothing brands to consider plus-size men’s fashion as part of their offerings. Once this happens the demand for plussize male models will inevitably increase.” She says, at the open casting call, several of the semi-finalists were given cards by a few modelling agents. “It is hoped that this will lead to them being booked and launching their careers,” Levy says.

ore than 130 000 TOPEs were sold at Pick n Pay during the 2019 Sunflower Day campaign, raising R3.9 million to help fight blood diseases like leukaemia through the recruitment of stemcell donors. The retailer was the first to join forces with the Sunflower Fund 16 years ago – for what was then known as Bandana Day – to help increase the number of critically needed donors on the registry, especially in South Africa. Every year TOPEs are sold in
stores, culminating in Sunflower Day on 20 September, to raise awareness and funding for the Sunflower Fund. “This year’s contribution of just under R4 million is testament to the difference each one of us can make. The fact that the sale of one little item like this can generate something of this magnitude is incredible. We’d like to thank every customer, school and corporate who joined to help make 2019 Sunflower Day the success it was. It

HEALTH
Humanitarian mom honoured “I
didn’t think I would ever survive the death of my daughter. But Jenna has given me purpose,” says author and medical activist Gabi Lowe. Gabi is the mother of the late Lead SA activist Jenna Lowe, the teenager who was the driving force behind the #GetMeTo21 campaign. Jenna was diagnosed with pulmonary arterial hypertension, a rare illness that, after a double lung transplant, ultimately led to her death, four months before her 21st birthday. Following Jenna’s death, Gabi continued to work to honour Jenna’s legacy through the non-profit-organisation (NPO), The Jenna Lowe Trust. The Capetonian was recently given the Mbokodo Humanitarian Award at a ceremony in Johannesburg. She is recognised for her outstanding and enduring efforts to raise awareness for rare diseases and organ donation in South Africa, as well as the positive change in the care of pulmonary hypertension (PH) patients she has effected for both state and private patients. “Jenna wanted one thing and that was for state patients to receive lung transplants, and for all PH patients to receive the best care possible,” says Gabi. At the age of 20, Jenna invited everyone who signed up as an organ donor to her 21st party planned for 24 October 2015. She started the campaign in the hope of attracting donors for the lungs she needed to live and to create awareness about the need for life-saving organs, in a country where there was a
0.01% organ donor registration rate. The #GetMeTo21 campaign increased organ donation in South Africa by 287%, helping thousands of patients-in-need to receive organs. Gabi as director of the trust has helped establish and support a centre of care at Groote Schuur Hospital for PH patients where they are able to receive the highly specialised care required for this rare disease. The first PH patient registry has been rolled out that enables local clinicians to keep and monitor an organised system of patients in the country. And she was seconded onto a PH patients perspective task force at an international PH meeting in Nice, France together with nine specialists to help create a medical paper for patients facing PH around the world. As a result, Gabi is hosting the first PH Patients International Convention in Cape Town on 20 March 2020. The convention will bring together PH medical experts from around the world to assist PH patients in improving their own care and treatment. Gabi’s memoir, Get Me to 21, in which she shares her family’s fouryear battle to save Jenna’s life, is on its third print run and continues to raise awareness for organ donor registration and the early diagnosis of PH. “Groote Schuur Hospital now has a centre of care for PH patients and is the first state hospital to do lung transplants. I know that this is only the beginning, there is still so much we can do. But Jen showed me that we are part of something bigger. And inspires me to do more,” says Gabi.
Gabi Lowe was awarded the Mbokodo Humanitarian Award at an annual awards ceremony in Johannesburg.
Smoothing the way for ECDs A review of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) exemption criteria could see the scrapping of development charges for many of the estimated 1 400 unregistered ECDs in Cape Town. The City of Cape Town’s social development and early childhood development department is in the process of reviewing the exemption criteria for ECDs. The review pertains specifically to development charges. The once-off fee is imposed at the time of a land development application or when an application is made to change the lawful land use or zoning of a property. Experience has shown that where ECD operators convert residences into early learning spaces, many are unable to pay the development charges for rezoning etcetera and are therefore unable to register with the provincial department of Social
development. The department is now proposing that this exemption be extended to ECDs with more than 35 children that can prove the joint income of parents is less than R15 000 per month. “Regulations surrounding ECDs pose many challenges for those centres located in impoverished communities and informal settlements. Many of these centres generate very little income and therefore cannot afford the costs associated with becoming registered entities. It is estimated that 1 400 unregistered ECDs operate within the City’s boundaries and many will benefit from the review of the exemption criteria,” says Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. “Early learning plays a vital role in giving children the right start to their educa-
tion journey and the City is committed to making it easier for ECDs to register so that they can have access to resources, but also be the safe spaces that children deserve.” The proposed ECD exemption criteria is available for viewing on www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay. Copies are available at subcouncil offices and City libraries Comments, input and recommendations must reach the following channels by 30 November: E-mail: Public.Participation@capetown.gov.za or Nazlie.duToit@capetown.gov.za or online: www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay. MOVEMBER
‘Early diagnosis saved my life’ F
or financial planner Darren Robertson (42), his prostate cancer diagnosis a year ago was the beginning of a journey which took him from the first visit to urologist Dr Karlheinz Jehle, to a friendship that has seen the two men riding the three-day FNB Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race together this year. Robertson is a Mo Bro for Movember (www.za.movember.com), a global men’s health charity tackling prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Robertson describes his cancer journey as being “surprisingly positive”. But that doesn’t mean it was easy. He and his wife Loren first heard he had prostate cancer about eight months after the birth of their daughter Rebecca. Robertson was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer, but a full biopsy carried out after his prostate and seminal vessels were removed in January, showed that his cancer was actually stage 3, and that it had invaded his lymph nodes. “I was lucky,” he says. “If I had not gone for the check up, and if my GP had not suggested a full blood test and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurement, it would have been a very different story.” It was during one of his check-ups with Dr Jehle that the two men got talking about mountain biking. “He had some mountain biking pictures on the wall, and it wasn’t long before we decided to go on some rides,” Robertson says. Dr Jehle says he didn’t imagine it would lead to them undertaking the Wines2Whales (28 to 30 October) together. “But when Darren suggested to me that it would be a great way to spread the Movember word about the importance of early detection and regular check-ups, I agreed immediately,” he says.
Jehle lauds Robertson for his bravery in speaking out about his prostate cancer diagnosis. The disease is the leading cancer among South African men. As many as one in five South African men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with black men more likely to get a more aggressive form of prostate cancer, and at a younger age. “Men are dying too soon because they are not going for screenings. The rule of thumb is to have your prostate checked at 45 if you are black or if you have a family history of the disease, and at 50 for everyone else. But if you are worried, go sooner,” he says. “Early detection of prostate cancer can make all the difference. It is so important that Dr Karlheinz Jehle and Darren Robertson ready to take on the Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race. And after attending last Saturday’s Taste of Belgium, a market-style celebration of all things Belgian, it is clear that more than 1 500 Capetonians whole-heartedly agree. The Consul of Belgium in Cape Town, Karl Stouthuysen, says the event is held annually to introduce South Africans to Belgium. “We are a small country with about 11 million residents but we have so much to offer,” Stouthuysen said. “About 10 000 Belgians live right here in South Africa.” According to the website Focus on Belgium (www.focusonbelgium.be), the country occupies an important position on the economic chessboard. “It is ranked 12th country in the world for the export of merchandise (WTO-2014 Report) and is a favourite destination for investors.
Every year, billions of euros of foreign direct investment are made in Belgium,” the website reads. “Belgians like to enjoy life and make sure they do so,” the website reads. Well, if last weekend’s festivities are anything to go by Belgians do like to have fun. Organised by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Kingdom of Belgium and SAB-InBev, this year’s festival was hosted at the Belgian Embassy in Newlands. Although the event is in its eighth-year, this is the first time it was held at the embassy. Whether it was the beautiful grounds, the swimming pool open to children or the smell of waffles, it drew the crowds. Judging by the long queues at the food stands, it seemed the many traders might have gotten more than they bargained for. But, in true Belgian style, they buckled down and pushed out those waffles and bitterballen at breakneck-speed. Food on sale included Flemish stew, Bel-

For those with a sweet tooth there was a selection of chocolate, fine pastries and tarts. And to wash it all down, authentic Belgian beers. The flea market, organised by the Belgica Club (the club for all Belgians and their friends), had some great steals, including
used board games at R10 each. For the kids, there was a play area and pool to keep them entertained. And if that didn’t put smiles on their faces, the strawberries dipped in chocolate did. A sunset concert by the Nomadic Orchestra at 17:00 concluded the day’s fun and festivities. And even though Arnold Schwarzenegger hails from Austria and not Belgium, his wellknown quote applies: “I’ll be back.” Next year.

‘Calendar Girls’ returns
THEATRE
Singer shares her story
The Pinelands Players will bring Calendar Girls back to the Masque Theatre for one show only. The funny and poignant play, based on the 2003 British comedy film, tells the true story of how a Yorkshire Women’s Institute chapter’s fundraising effort for leukaemia research – by posing nude for a calendar – becomes a media sensation. The Sunflower Fund is the show’s chosen beneficiary. The non-profit organisation will attend the production and will sell handcrafted paper flowers, which will be displayed on a wall, in remembrance of those who have lost their lives to, and those who

olani Mahola will take centre stage in her first one-woman show, The One Who Sings (from the Xhosa “Lo Uculayo”) at the Baxter Theatre. The former Freshlyground lead singer will interweave her original new music with some of her most well-known songs, taking the audience on an intimate journey seen through the eyes of a young girl growing up in a divided 1980s South Africa. Zolani opens up about her struggles in a
country still grappling with past wounds and its sense of identity. She shares details from her life; from her tumultuous childhood and adolescence to becoming an artist and national icon, opening the 2010 Fifa World Cup. “I’ve decided it’s time for me to share myself in a way I have never done before, and preparing for this show has been a huge part of my healing process,” she says. Zolani believes South Africa is at a critical point in its history and that our old narratives are no longer working. “Through telling my story, I want to use my voice to gently challenge my fellow humans to rise above our current narrative to create a greater national story.” Collaborating with multi-award-winning director Faniswa Yisa (Reza de Wet’s Missing, Ityala Lamawela, Born in the RSA and What Remains), her performance evokes powerful and provocative universal themes. Angela Nemov is the production designer and Aron Halevi, the musical director. The show is supported by Rebecca Oppenheimer. Performances run from Tuesday 19 November to Saturday 23 November and start at 20:30. A matinee show will also be held at 15:00 on Saturday. Tickets are R120 each and are available Zolani Mahola in her one-woman show, The One Who Sings. from Webtickets.

he relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles Softball Club and the Swedish Softball Association took another positive turn recently. Moses Molaba, Thuto Makolomakoe and Terence White were guest players for Sweden in the European Masters Softball Cup played in Barcelona, Spain. They were invited by their local Swedish player, Karl Heljm, who plays for Eagles as part of an agreement between the two organisations. The men’s edition of this tournament consisted of eight teams from six different countries. For the round-robin phase, the teams played in two groups. Denmark All Stars and Magos Tenerife remained undefeated in their group, thus securing the first two spots in the winners’ group. Runners up, with both one loss and two wins, were the Israel Stars and Capitalinos Gran Canaria. Magos Tenerife remained the only undefeated team throughout the event and deserved the title. “The experience of playing in this event was great,” said Molaba who has vast experience in the international softball scene. Molaba had a superb tournament ending 4th in the batting with an average of 500 and 5th in the pitching striking out 34 batters in the process. The 41-year-old former South African international has played at one Junior World Championship, three senior World Championships, one Commonwealth Games and has toured overseas on 11 different occasions. Molaba is renowned for his winning run in the 2000 World Series in East London. But now, even as his energy has shifted mostly to coaching, Molaba could be set to add another golden moment. “By accepting the invitation, we will con-
tinue to strengthen the relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles and the Sweden Softball Federation,” he said. Locally, Molaba coaches the Eagles Men side and the Falcons Women’s Super League team. Eagles and the Swedish intend to continue this relationship going into the future.
