TOKAI

Graduates spread their wings The 211 male graduates of Chrysalis Youth Academy’s 19 Alpha course.

NETTALIE VILJOEN

T

he Chrysalis Youth Academy (CA) celebrated the graduation of 211 male students on Saturday 3 August at the academy’s premises on Porter Estate, Tokai. Shortly after, on Monday 5 August, the graduates stepped into a 12-month internship at a placement organisation close to their homes. The Western Cape minister of community safety Albert Fritz was the keynote speaker at the event. “I’m incredibly proud of each and every single graduate of the Alpha 19 course. They have turned their lives around and are now leaders among their peers,” said Fritz.

He added that the academy produces young leaders and highlighted two beacons of hope. “Firstly, we have Roderick George from Lavender Hill. He was a student in 2013 and is now one of our senior instructors. He is known for being a fast runner, and for being passionate about youth development. Secondly, we have Tshepiso Lesoetsa from Nyanga. Lesoetsa is known for being a keen and hardworking student who studied to become a peace officer.” Fritz added that his relationship with the academy went back a long way, to when he was previously the provincial minister for community safety between 2010 and 2011. “Chrysalis holds a special place in my

heart because I have seen over the years the life-changing experience it has been for so many young men and women.” Fritz said that youth academies like CA are becoming more critical to guide young people through the challenges they face. “In South Africa, the youth unemployment rate is as high as 52%. Chrysalis is helping to break this vicious cycle which entraps and takes opportunities away from the youth,” he said. Provincial minister for social development Sharna Fernandez, as well as the former chief whip of the DA and founder of CA, Mark Wiley, also attended the event. CA students hail from across the province, including Khayelitsha, Mitchell’s Plain,

Hanover Park, Plettenberg Bay, George, Mossel Bay, Beaufort West, Leeu Gamka, Vredendal and Saldanha. For three months, they are accommodated at the Porter Estate while they complete the 19 Alpha course. Graduates of the programme received training in office administration, computer literacy, sports leadership, basic cookery, public safety, peace officer’s training, youth development, welding and electrical circuitry as well as fire fighting. CA has an average intake of 220 young people every three months. More than 9 000 young people have graduated since 2000. The Alpha 19 course for female students will start on Saturday 31 August.

n additional 18 homeless people can now be accommodated at Elim Nightshelter after staff of WP Media (publishers of People’s Post, City Vision and TygerBurger) put notebooks and pens aside to make emergency waterproof sleeping bags for the shelter. This was in conjunction with Media24’s #1000 Acts of Kindness project. The sleeping bags are made with newspaper and plastic, creating a warm, portable and waterproof emergency sleeping bag for those in need. Manager of the shelter Shafiek Ortell says homeless people come knocking at their door every day. “We have a lot of street people coming to the gates of Elim Night Shelter daily. he Hawks’ Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) together with Crime Intelligence uncovered a clandestine dagga laboratory in Constantia on Monday 30 July. The joint team reacted on information about the dagga lab and conducted a search and seizure operation. This was carried out in line with Section 22(b) of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA). During the search, the team found

cannabis oil, dagga plant materials and seeds, as well as cannabis extracting equipment and chemicals. Computers and the lab equipment, as well as a total of R180 000 in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of crime, were seized. A Hawks spokesperson confirmed on Friday 8 August that they were following up on leads, but, as of yet, no arrests have been made. The investigation is still ongoing.

HOUT BAY

Greasing the wheels for cohesion T

here was huge excitement and celebration among Hout Bay residents at the official opening of the Eyethu Hout Bay Skate Park on Friday 26 July. An initiative of the Rotary Club of Hout Bay (RCHB), the state-of-the-art facility was built for existing and new skateboarders, as well as the youth from the diverse communities in the area. John Winship from RC Club Newlands said that the joy of skateboarding was that it was a low-cost activity, involving both young and old, where much of the equipment was recycled, and hence, affordable to many. Winship said: “Above all, it is enjoyed by all the communities in Hout Bay, including Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg and the Valley.” He adds that the establishment of the park has brought about an affirmation of togetherness, shared ownership and partnership between communities. “Eyethu is a Nguni word meaning ‘ours’, so of course it all ties in quite nicely. The park serves as a safe space for youth to engage with one another.” Construction took place over the past six months and cost a total of R1.5m. The Skate Park area is 950m² in total and is designed to accommodate both novices and professionals with a bowl, ramps in different sizes, rails and various other features. The park is set up for spectators to comfortably watch friends or family skateboarding, and is situated in the busy Main Road, opposite the police station and fire station. The original idea was developed four years ago by the skate park community and

RCHB after one of the Rotary club members, Keith Bull, saw a child almost killed after skating down a side road and into the main road. He suggested the idea of a Rotary project on the Hout Bay organised Facebook page, and sparked the realisation of a dream for the skateboarding community. After running into problems with funding for the construction of the skate park in 2017, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB) responded to the RCHB public pleas for corporate support. CCPB then approached Rotary Club Newlands, their corporate social investment (CSI) partner that works closely with the company on major community projects, to connect with the Hout Bay Rotary team and offer the funding shortfall. “Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages takes community development and enrichment very seriously. “It brings us great joy to be able to play a role in providing a safe place for communities to enjoy this recreational activity,” said Priscilla Urquhart, public affairs and communications manager for CCPB. The park sets a precedent for other local communities to follow, drive and lead their own public spaces and aids the community in creating their own crime prevention strategies, through unconventional sports, youth leadership and after-school training programmes. Funders included the Rotary Clubs of Hout Bay, Newlands, Claremont, Totnes England, Vilshofen Germany, Club 790 and the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, while the site was provided by the City of Cape Town.

attswood Football Club continues its 90th anniversary celebrations with a Theme Party to be held on Saturday 31 August. The event, which hopes to attract 500 to 600 people, will take place at Wittebome Civic, Rosmead Avenue, and partygoers can dress up in any style, era or theme they choose. Alan Donough, who has been a member of the club for nearly 48 years, said the Theme Party was an opportunity for friends and supporters of the club to share in its rich history. “We encourage members of the

public to acknowledge Battswood Football Club’s history, commitment and sacrifices during the antiapartheid years by joining us for the Theme Party,” he said. DJ Catt will be spinning all the right numbers so make sure to come wearing your dancing shoes. The doors will open at 19:00 and guests can bring their own drinks and platters. The event follows hot on the heels of the football club’s 90th anniversary Gala Dinner held on Saturday 27 July at the Banquet Hall, Cape Town Civic Centre. A total of 180 guests were treated to a threecourse dinner while multiple speak-

ers reflected on the club’s history and discussed the way forward. The first week in August was huge for The City of Cape Town’s Traffic officers who made 300 arrests in total, impounding 134 vehicles and 242 cellphones, and issuing 27 468 fines for various offences. Varsity College netball rises to the occasion T he Independent Institute of Education’s (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town netball first team participated in this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament at Witwatersrand University recently. The ladies were off to a victorious start as the girls defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with a 38-31 win. “The girls played fantastically well after being promoted from C to B division. It was important that we got our USSA tour off to a winning start,” says Andrew Howitt, Varsity College Cape Town’s sports coordinator. On the second day of the tournament, the ladies unfortunately lost by the skin of their teeth, 36-35, to the Durban University of

Technology (DUT). On day three the team made a comeback with a convincing 50-33 win against Central University of Technology (CUT). The team lost their opening match on day four, 45-26, to UCT and on the same day, they bounced back by defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a 34-28 win in game two. On the last day of the tournament the team beat the University of Limpopo (UL) with a win of 48-31 in the final match of USSA tour. “As a newly promoted team the odds were stacked against us in a far more competitive division, however, coming forth to some well-established university’s insured that USSA 2019 was a success and by that we were very proud of the team,” concluded Howitt.

Cape Town streets tickled pink T

he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my

title today. The vibe makes this race so special. It’s so beautiful to see all these women unite on one day and run together.” Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Beetrice Themane finished third. PinkDrive is a non-profit company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. PinkDrive was present at each event offering free clinical breast examinations and educating on the importance of self- breast examinations. PinkDrive received a donation of R75 000 during this year’s prize giving. Results: 1. Annie Bothma – 00:34:52 2. Zintle Xiniwe – 00:37:06 3. Beetrice Themane – 00:37:26 4. Christiane Andriaanse – 00:37:53 5. Bulelwa Simae – 00:38:25 6. Yandiswa Shange – 00:39:36 7. Tyla le Roux – 00:39:54 8. Danette Smith – 00:40:17
