OCEAN VIEW

Dogfights a rising concern RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

O

Ingrid de Storie with a rescued dog. She says dogs used for dog fighting are usually not cared for correctly by their owners and are used for ego-boosting.

n Wednesday 16 October, a 13-year-old Ocean View resident’s dog went missing after he followed her to school in the morning. Little did she know he had been picked up during the day and forced to fight another dog. After losing the fight, and being critically injured, the dog’s head was smashed in with a rock. One of the dogfighters “threw a boulder on the dog’s head and then it died”, explains Ingrid de Storie, an animal lover and an activist for animal rights. Affectionately known as the Mother Theresa of animals (“Saving distressed animals”, People’s Post, 3 September), De Storie is concerned about the growing number of dogfights taking place in the Ocean View community. The SPCA reveals the issue is much more widespread. While dogfighting is illegal in South Africa in terms of the Animals Protection Act, the SPCA Cape of Good Hope’s spokesperson, Belinda Abraham, confirms that she has observed an increase in the number of dogfighting cases reported – especially in the Cape Flats. Many may be under the impression that the blood sport is practised for financial gain, but Abraham and the operations manager at The Emma Animal Rescue Society (Tears), Mandy Store, agree that the reasons for people pitting their dogs against each other are more than likely a social issue. Tears is primarily a veterinary clinic which avails their services to the under-resourced communities of Cape Town, such as

Vrygrond, Ocean View, Masiphumelele and Redhill. They rescue, rehome, rehabilitate and care for animals, and carry out awareness programmes for pet owners and the general public. Store, based on her years of work in these communities, believes the problem of dogfighting does not stem from organised syndicates, but rather children who need attention, affection and status. De Storie alleges that she is aware of one man who coerces local children to do his dirty work. “He sits at home and he sends the kids to go do the dogfighting. Then they make videos of it and bring the videos to him, and he praises his dog. He won’t go – he sends the children who don’t want to go to school.” Store adds: “It’s become a lot more prevalent in the past two years and it’s not just gang-related anymore. Now we find it’s happening in high schools. A lot of them (dogfighters) have left school and come from broken homes and want attention. It’s more a human welfare issue than an animal cruelty issue.” Whatever the reason, cruelty to animals is a large part of the world of dogfighting. De Storie says the torture she has seen the dogs go through is more than she can bear. “They kick the dogs while the dogs are fighting. As the dogs fight, they pull the dog’s balls, pinching them and twisting so that he can get more aggressive,” she explains. The sport is often linked to other criminal activities and subcultures, and the effect witnessing these dog fights might have on children is worrisome. V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 Abraham explains: “Children are often present and, besides the inherent danger of the situation to a child, their witnessing such premeditated acts of cruelty leads to a growing desensitisation to violence. “Dogfighting is a strong indicator of a society in decay as it promotes and encourages a culture of non-empathy. This routine exposure of children to both criminal activities and unfettered animal abuse and neglect can be a major contributing factor in their later manifestation of conduct disorders and social deviance.” Both Tears and the SPCA are carrying out programmes to teach children empathy for animals. Tears will be running two training sessions. The first is to determine the types of relationship formed between animals and their carers and to influence them in terms of their value systems. The second session is to assess these relationships. “We’re trying to find the root of the problem and with this information, we then need

to approach social services to address the needs of the children,” says Store. The SPCA’s Ani-Pal Education Programme also teaches children compassion for animals via an interactive puppet show and provides teachers with workbooks (endorsed by the South African department of basic education) to ensure further teaching and the reinforcement of their message. “This not only creates a kinder world for animals but also paves the way for a humane and ethically responsible society. It teaches children empathy and respect for life, thereby setting learners on a valuable life path based on firm moral values and making them less likely to become perpetrators of violent crimes,” says Abraham. During this past year, they have performed the award-winning Ani-Pals puppet show 140 times to 14 315 children throughout Cape Town. Dogfighting and all animal cruelty is punishable in accordance with the Animals Protection Act. Sgt Leon Fortuin, the spokesperson for

Ocean View police, confirms a case has been opened at the police station regarding the 13-year-old resident’s dog that was killed after being forced to fight. In contravention of the national act, as well as the City of Cape Town’s Animal Bylaw of 2010, the suspects (who are minors) involved in the dogfighting are being investigated and will be prosecuted in accordance with the Juvenile Justice System. In a warning to dogfighters, the SPCA states the practice of the sport may result in the following punishments: . By imprisonment: s sentence of imprisonment for a period not exceeding three (3) years, where the court is not the court of a regional division (district court), or not exceeding fifteen (15) years, where the court is the court of a regional division. . By fine: a fine not exceeding the amount determined by the minister from time to time by notice in the Gazette for the respective courts referred to in paragraph (a); [this is currently R60 000 for a district court, and R300 000 for a regional court].

FAR SOUTH

Beaches receive Blue Flag status T

wo of the far south beaches have been awarded Blue Flag certifications of excellence for the coming summer season. Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (Wessa), an organisation promoting environmental consciousness in South Africa, made the announcement recently. Based on 33 criteria divided into four categories – environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services – Muizenberg beach and Fish Hoek beach have been acknowledged for their excellence. The City of Cape Town says the announcement is good news for beachgoers and shows the City’s commitment to providing quality facilities for residents and visitors. “The City is honoured to once again be part of the Blue Flag programme, with 10 of our beaches making the cut. The Blue Flag beaches are geographically well positioned around the metropole, from Silwerstroomstrand in the north, beaches on the Atlantic Seaboard, to the secluded little Bikini Beach next to the Gordons Bay Harbour in the South,” says Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien. “These beaches are visited by thousands of residents and tourists every year and the City is making sure that they are of a high standard.” According to the City, the announcement signifies the parks and recreation department’s summer readiness ahead of the holiday season. Their preparations include more than 330 lifeguards being stationed at various bathing areas around the city, to ensure public safety. Parks and recreation noted an almost 50% reduction in the number of fatal drowning incidents during the 2018/19 summer season, as

More than 330 lifeguards have been stationed at various bathing areas around the city since the second week of September. compared to the previous season. “Our staff work tirelessly to ensure a quality experience for all visitors to our facilities, but it’s a two-way street and we need the public to support us by listening to lifeguards and other City staff, and to swim only in designated areas,” Badroodien said. The other beaches to receive Blue Flag status include Bikini Beach in Gordon’s Bay, Camps Bay, Fourth beach in Clifton, Llandudno, Melkbosstrand, Mnandi, Silwerstroomstrand, Strandfontein and Seaforth (provisionally).

SIMON’S TOWN

Navy diver has eye on global powerlifting title RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

P

icking up some serious accolades – and weights – at a Strongman qualifier last month, Andre Engelbrecht is poised to continue his training to break more records next year. The 39-year-old warrant officer class 2 South African National Defence Force diver joined the Navy in 2003. Now, 16 years later, he is stationed at the operational diving division in Simon’s Town. He attributes the discovery of his love for weightlifting and strength-building to his job. Andre says his work entails far more than just diving. It includes explosive ordinates disposal above and underwater; fixing holes in ships and working with the NSRI. “So if there are callouts, we go there; we do anti-piracy.” He adds: “It’s extremely physical. Our diving cylinders weigh 20kg and we have to carry two. The bomb suit we wear is 50kg. You have to be strong to carry all that equipment around.” Noticing the strength he had developed at work, he began to train to compete. “First I did bodybuilding; and when I started picking up heavier things, I started liking it more.” In his first Strongman competition in 2014, he qualified for nationals and came third in South Africa for the under 105kg category. In 2015 he reached another milestone: squatting 300kg while weighing less than 100kg. He hasn’t stopped pushing himself since then. “This year was just the peak of everything,” he says. “In June this year, I competed in the Rhino Powerlifting Club Nationals in Pretoria. I won the under 100kg, Men Open title and placed third overall at nationals according to the power-to-weight formula.” He squatted 290kg (currently the South African record submaster), bench-pressed 185kg and did a 305kg deadlift. Then on Saturday 12 October, as part of the Strongman Union, he competed in the ASU Logpress and Deadlift Championships in Worcester which was the qualifier for Africa’s Strongest Man. “I competed in the under 90kg weight category. I set a new All Africa Conventional Deadlift record with 325kg, lifting 3.6 times my bodyweight. Then I set a new All Africa Siver Dollar Deadlift record with 420kg, lifting 4.6 times my bodyweight!” All the accolades in the world would mean nothing, however, without his weightlifting wife Aloudia Jonck-Engelbrecht by his side.

Strongman record-breaker, Andre Engelbrecht, is looking for new records to crush. “I’ve had many injuries over the past five years – a torn left peck, a torn right peck, a slipped disc, a herniated disc – and she’s the one who’s been there to support me. “She feeds me when I can’t lift my arms; she’s there for all the competitions,” he gushes. Aloudia says, through it all, she is by his side. “I don’t enjoy seeing him injured, but it’s his passion and if it’s something that makes him happy, it makes me happy.” With his support system firmly in place, Andre is looking for the next record to shatter. “My sights are now set on the Global Powerlifting Committee World Powerlifting Championship in Canada, October 2020,

where I want to set new world records,” he says. In preparation for the competition, Andre is continuing his training at the gym he put together at the defence base in Simon’s Town. His trainer keeps him in tip-top shape through online sessions. In their spare time, Andre and Aloudia raise funds for Orion Organisation, a nonprofit organisation for people with disabilities – a cause they feel very passionate about. The organisation will host its annual charity auction on Saturday 9 November in Cape Town and a fundraiser in Atlantis on Saturday 30 November. V For more information, call 021 572 8490.

KEEPING THE MIND FIT: On Friday 11 October, Fish Hoek Primary School hosted a friendly chess tournament against Ukhanyo Primary School from Masiphumelele. All the children played well and had a great Friday afternoon of chess.

Gilli and David Clayden and Moses Mabhida, as he is known to friends and family, work to keep the verge on Potomac Place clear and beautiful.

NOORDHOEK

Pair fights alien vegetation RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

Gardener affectionately known as Moses Mabhida plants trees and clears out unwelcome plants to keep Noordhoek green.

pen Gardens has come and gone, but Gilli and David Clayden still want to emphasise the importance of clearing alien vegetation from our gardens to create a flourishing, indigenous garden scape. About three years ago, the couple noticed that the municipal land near their home in Noordhoek had become misused. They decided it was time to do something to create a more beautiful and animal-friendly community. “It is a public, open space. Previously it was used for dumping. It became a general eyesore and a nuisance. Gradually, we started taking things out and adding new plants,” says Gilli. The work they have completed since then includes: . adding more than 60 bags of organic compost; . adding organic fertiliser and used coffee grounds; . planting more than 12 indigenous trees; . planting hundreds of indigenous perennials; . adding Cape Honeysuckles and succulents. “It’s colourful now and, with it being indigenous, people call it our own little Namaqualand.” Having managed to sustain their plants throughout the drought, they still try to keep within the former water restrictions. They have continued to use the means that

carried them through the dry periods. “Back then, we installed a system of Jojos (water tanks) to catch the rainwater. Today we still only try to use 50F per day,” she explains. She adds that clearing out the alien plant species was a big part of sustaining their plants throughout the drought. “The root systems (of alien plants) grow so vastly and transversely and take all of the water out of the ground. The indigenous stuff struggles to get water. The alien plants are also a fire hazard.” Taking her message further than the annual open garden celebration, she says: “We continued this week; clearing more of the alien plants.” Kathy Fish and Andy Mills from On The Verge community initiative offered the Claydens manpower to help with the clearing of these species. Gilli adds, besides the flora, it has had a huge impact on the fauna as well: “Wildlife – birds, bees, butterflies, cape mongoose, mountain tortoises – are coming back!” Horse riders and dog walkers who travel down to the beach through the green paths now cleared of unruly vegetation have also benefitted greatly. The Claydens’ garden helper, affectionately known as Moses Mabhida, also works tirelessly to keep the area in tip-top shape. Gilli encourages all residents to be naturewise. “We all need to be aware of our surroundings, and not to let things deteriorate. If everyone does a little bit, there’s a lot that can be done,” she concludes.

AWARDING MUSICAL EXCELLENCE: The Silvermine Music Academy celebrated its excellent achievers at a stunning gala concert and awards evening. Special guest, singer and songwriter Loki Rothman wowed the students and their parents with his incredible skill as a musician and guitar player. He encouraged the students to be creative and think out of the box, while sharing his journey through the power of music. Pictured is Loki and Sun Valley Primary School learner, Aniqah Slarmie.

KOMMETJIE

Road project nearing completion P

rogress on the Kommetjie Road Project is going well, reports the City’s Congestion Management Programme. It is one of two projects that have been prioritised to facilitate easier road usage. Completion of the project, which started in 2016, is set for 2020. “The projects were implemented with the

residents and motorists in mind. “All road users will be able to use the road safely, whether on foot, bicycle or in a car,” said the City’s Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase. Kommetjie Road Project Listed are the tasks that have been

completed thus far: . Frigate Crescent has been reconstructed and reopened to traffic; . the Palm Avenue/Kommetjie Main Road intersection has been reconstructed and reopened to traffic; . the road widenings and stabilised gravel layer works on the southbound carriageway of Ou Kaapse Weg from Noordhoek Main Road to the 4-way-stop have been completed; . about 2 600 tons of bitumen has been laid on the eastbound carriageway of Kommetjie Main Road from Living Hope towards the

four–way stop; and the eastbound lane of Noordhoek Main Road from Montrose to the signalised intersection; . stabilised gravel layer works were also completed on Noordhoek Main Road from Houmoed Avenue to Montrose Close. “Roadworks are always inconvenient and I want to thank all residents and motorists for their patience during the construction period. “There are only a few months to go now before you can enjoy the benefits of these projects,” said Purchase.

SINGING FOR CHARITY: Sun Valley Primary School’s Valley Vocals Choir members sang their hearts out at the 2nd Annual Charity Ball of the Newborns Trust hosted at the Mount Nelson Hotel in the CBD on Friday 18 October. Debbie-Jayne Viljoen, acting principal at the school, says: “Our choir was invited to sing. What a wonderful privilege it was for them to share their singing with others at this prestigious event.”

Help APPrehend criminals Members of the public can now report anonymous crime tips through the My Saps app. The app, launched by the police in partnership with Vodacom, allows users access to several features. These include submitting tip-offs, locating the nearest police station or vulnerable services facilities and sending emergency messages. To access the platform users need to register and create a profile. When a tip-off is given, users are given the option to report the crime anonymous-

ly. They need to identify the type of incident and supply details of the event and suspect information. Users are provided with a reference number and the ability to supply further information about the crime or to follow up on the police’s progress. Victims of crime are still required to register a case at a police station for investigation and insurance claims. V The app is available from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Feature phone users can use the USSD string *134*10111# to access the tip-off line.

EQUALITY

Plus size men to show off curves NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

P

lus-size men are invited to a #PlusIs Equal casting show – the first of its kind – taking place at The Radisson Red Hotel at the V&A Waterfront on Saturday 9 November. Casting will be from 10:00 to 12:00, followed by the deliberations from 12:00 to 14:00. The event aims to raise awareness and inspire bigger men to be comfortable and confident in their bodies. Leonie Andereya, a curator at the hotel, says: “We see this as not only an opportunity to create awareness around representation and equality but to also potentially launch or further someone’s career. If it’s not a modelling career one is after, then it’s the chance to be heard and make history. Every voice counts.” Andereya explains that there is no specific entry criteria. All over 18s are welcome and there is also no height restriction. She says it is open to any gentleman who is full-bodied, full-figured or considered larger. “The campaign is looking for real men. They can arrive dressed in anything they feel comfortable in and no headshots or portfolio shots are required,” says Andereya. Twelve of the participating men will get a chance to model a new plus-size men’s range designed by a secret designer. Jade Campbell, a fashion designer and an advocate for plus-size men, says this is an attempt to close the gap on how plus-size women are portrayed and catered for in comparison to men. He says men need their voices to be heard and to be represented in the market. Campbell says that he was once 28kg overweight and felt frustrated every time he went shopping. He loved fashion but could not find anything to his taste. Campbell learned to be proud of his body and to have a positive mindset. He then scored a rare gig to be a plus-size model and never looked back. As an advocate for plus-size men, his favourite inspirational line is: “If you look good, you feel good.” He says there are opportunities for men to get recognised.

From left are Branagan Fingo, TJ Ngoma, Jason-Jon Haskin, Edó Mostert, and seated is Jade Campbell. “We are not seen, nobody sees us. The focus is on women and as men, we need to get the message across,” he says. TJ Ngoma, actor and body positivity advocate, says there is still a lot that needs to be done to create awareness and build a confident, plus-sized male society. He says even the #PlusIsEqual campaign is mostly supported by women.

Sharing his personal story, Ngoma says he has always been bigger than his peers. “For example, at the age of nine, I was already wearing a size 13 to 14 years’ clothes. My journey was an up and down one until I got tired and started doing something to change the way I think,” says Ngoma. He says changing your mindset is a big step. For him, it is not about health, but rath-

er body positivity and self-respect. “Be the change you want to see, start sharing your images or those of other ordinary men instead of models. By doing so, people will start to admire and respect us for who we are.” V To attend the casting or for more information, email red@20across.com or visit the #PlusIsEqual casting call event page on Facebook: PlusIsEqual Casting Call.

Hair, hair for Movember month Some of our male friends, family members or work colleagues may start to look a little less well-groomed than usual, this being the fifth day of Movember. But not to worry. The progressively growing facial hair is all for a good cause: to raise awareness about and to tackle men’s health issues. Currently, men in South Africa have a life expectancy that is seven years shorter than that of women. “Men are facing a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. We have to make a stand and stop men dying too young, before their time,” says Garron Gsell, chief executive and founder of the Men’s Foundation, which manages the Movember campaign in South Africa under license from the Global Movember Foundation. In SA, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in men, while male suicide accounts for approximately 18

deaths a day. “We have a long way to go until no man dies of these diseases. Our sons, partners, fathers, brothers and friends are facing these challenges and we need your help,” says Gsell. The City of Cape Town’s health department joins the call for men to prioritise their health and seek help earlier rather than later. Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says historically men account for the smallest percentage of clients to public healthcare facilities. “The reasons are many and complicated, but key among them is a widely held perception that seeking help is somehow a sign of weakness,” says Badroodien. “City Health and its partners have done a lot of good work to overcome these barriers to entry, and it is starting to show in

the statistical indicators.” The interventions include the piloting of male-only clinics and an increase in education and awareness efforts in general. The number of men testing and receiving treatment for sexually transmitted illnesses (STIs) has seen an encouraging increase over the past two years, from an average of just over 1 000 cases a month in July 2017, to an average of nearly 2 500 cases a month in May 2019. However, Badroodien cautions that men’s health is not sexual health alone. “There are also many non-communicable disease challenges that we face as a city, and as a country, like hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and mental health,” he says. City health offers free blood pressure and blood glucose screening at all of its facilities, along with tuberculosis screening and treatment, and HIV counselling, test-

ing and treatment (HCT). “My challenge to men this Movember and beyond is to reach out to their nearest public health facility and use the testing and treatment options available,” says Badroodien. Male clinics include: . Site B Men’s Clinic, corner of Bunga and Sulani Drive, Site B, Khayelitsha; . Site C Men’s Clinic, Site C taxi rank, Khayelitsha; . Gugulethu Men’s Clinic, corner of NY1 and NY3, Gugulethu; . Men’s Health satellite clinic, Bellville Station (currently closed for renovations); and . Kuyasa Men’s Clinic, Walter Sisulu Street, Khayelitsha (operated by Western Cape Health Department). First middle distance triathlon on your doorstep Enter your school into the #ChallengeCapeTown Family Fun Run for the ultimate bragging rights – and to get the chance to take photos with some of Cape Town’s fittest athletes and icons. The #ChallengeCapeTown Festival kicks off with an open water swim in Big Bay on Saturday 9 November, followed by the city’s middle-distance triathlon on Sunday 10 No-

vember starting at 07:45. Saturday’s event includes a 1.9km open water swim followed by a 4x300m junior swim relay, and a 4x150m kids’ swim relay. The fun run, as part of the festival, follows 6km of the same route as the triathlon on Sunday; through Zonnebloem via District Six passing Parliament, City Hall and the Castle of Good Hope and ends at Cape Town

High School. The triathlon will comprise a 1.9km swim, 90 km cycle and 21km run. Organisers say they expect about 2 000 athletes to participate in the fun run and all finishers will receive a medal at the finishing point. “Hang out in the Finish Village after your run to welcome the triathlete’s home or take a stroll back and cheer these athletes on as

they complete the last leg of their race,” reads the statement. Leonie Mollentze, spokesperson for #ChallengeCapeTown, says the family fun run event promotes a healthy, active lifestyle across all ages, and encourages learners to participate in organised sporting events. K

ommetjie-resident (when in Cape Town) and beloved musician, Jeremy Loops has been setting stages on fire with his chart-topping tunes; and with the new year approaching, fans can expect an “avalanche of new music”. But not before we hear him live, fresh off his performances in the United Kingdom, at Parklife music and food festival in Muizenberg on Sunday 1 December. His most recent album, Critical as Water, saw him receiving an accolade for his “Gold” music video, on which he teamed up once again with director Rob Smith. The col-

laborators won the 2019 South African Music Award for Music Video of the Year for this creation, as well as a Silver Loerie. On the album as a whole, he says ample time spent in water aided his creativity. “Critical as Water is an album about urgency – about identifying what, to you as a person, is as ‘critical as water’, and what one needs to do in order to chase these things down.” He takes his music on tour this month, starting on Thursday 14 November in Prague. “I’m feeling good ahead of our show in London. We’re playing at the O2 Academy Brixton, which is obviously a prestigious venue with a pretty insane capacity of 5 000,

and so there are the natural nerves that come with that ‘sense of occasion’, but we’re really excited about it.” He says the tour will prepare him for the much-anticipated music festival, set close to his home. “Seriously, we play Parklife just four days after the end of our Euro tour, so we’re going to be stage-fit and sharp. It’s perfect.” He adds: “I make a beeline back to my family home whenever I return from work and touring abroad.” Serendipitously, Sons of East was announced as his supporting act and they will join him for two performance dates in South Africa, including Parklife.

While nothing is set in stone for the Muizenberg show just yet, he says: “We’ll see what song combinations work for us on this tour, and prep the set on that basis. I’m very confident we’ll play my new single ‘What Would I Know’. I’m really excited about playing it at shows. And I’m also a big believer in playing all the big hits.” V See Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Sons of East and Diamond Thug at Parklife. Tickets at parklife.co.za.

International ballet in town Russian ballet lovers may brace themselves for a week-long performance by the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre from Wednesday 15 to Sunday 19 April next year. The crew will be presenting a Tchaikovsky’s magnificent classical ballet and Swan Lake at the Artscape Opera House. Organisers have promised stunning performances. “Led by Prima Ballerina, Irina Kolesnikova, I guarantee our performances here in South Africa will long be remembered. From London’s Coliseum Theatre to the Theatre des Champs Elysees in

Paris, and from Hong Kong to Sydney, our unequalled Russian art performs to full houses and standing ovations,” says Konstantin Tachkin, the founding director of the St Petersburg Ballet. “In the statement, it is said that Swan Lake tells the classic love story of Prince Siegfried and the Swan Princess, Odette torn, apart by the villainous sorcerer Rothbart in a story where true love conquers all,” Tachkin adds. V Ticket prices vary from R250 to R690 and are available at https://swanlake.computicket.com. For more information visit the Facebook page: St Petersburg Ballet Theatre.

There will be races for conventional 2F front wheel-drive rally and rallycross cars, as well as for the high-revving ‘big sixes’ of the E36 Cup – 3F rear wheel-drive BMW 3-Series luxury sedan dating from the late 1990s which enjoy a cult following among South African petrolheads. Each class will compete in two qualifying races of four laps for five cars on Saturday 9 November and one on Sunday morning, 10 November, in front of thousands of local and visiting enthusiasts. The top six cars from qualifying in each class will then go through to a six-lap final on Sunday. The World Rallycross and second-tier RX2 class cars, however, are all four-wheel-drive, while local competitors have either front or rear wheel-drive, depending on
