A

sa Moos (69) from Grassy Park was crowned the koesister queen on Sunday 1 September at the inaugural World Koesister Day. The event was hosted by the Radisson Red Hotel V&A Waterfront, Cape Town (RED), in association with Vannie Kaap. A total of 46 entrants registered for the competition and were judged by Dean John Smith from Suidooster, Saskia Falken (Kfm radio presenter), Marc Jacobs the co-owner of Vannie Kaap and chef Naseer Abdullah, the RED’s Kitchen Lead. When Aunty Asie, as she is fondly known,

was announced as the winner, she was clearly overwhelmed. “Shukraan,” she said to the crowd. “I cried for my parents and I experimented for 20 years. Don’t give up guys, I love you. I feel humbled,” said Moos. Since being announced as the winner of the competition, Moos said it has been hectic and she has received many orders for koesisters. “I have to get so many things done,” she says. Daughter, Fouzia Jakoet from Parow North says the whole family is very proud and happy of Ma Asa. “If she didn’t win, she would have been just as happy for the person who did,” said Jakoet. According to Jakoet, who describes her mother as a perfectionist, she just went out

to enjoy herself. “But she deserves it. She has been making koesisters for years now,” said Jakoet. They always told her she makes the best koesisters and other people have also told her so. “I think she’s been given the recognition she deserves.” Jakoet says her mother’s win has taken everyone by storm. She is always baking whether it’s doughnuts, cake (and she makes the best carrot cake), whether it’s for a wedding or for someone who is going to Mecca. “I don’t know what I would do without her. She is my go-to person. Whether it’s looking after the grandchildren. Nothing is ever too

much for her,” she added. From Sunday 8 September and every Sunday for three months, chef Naseer from the Radisson will be serving Ma Asa’s awardwinning koesisters between 10:00 and 12:00 in the OUIBar + KTCHN restaurant in the hotel. “The humble koesister has everything needed to bring about world peace, so why not support local and spread a little love where we can,” said Naseer. Moos walked away with prizes valued at R15 000 generously donated by the Radisson, Vaanie Kaap, Cape Town Tourism and the V&A Waterfront. “If anyone wants to learn, my number is right here,” added Moos.

he City of Cape Town is offering unemployed graduates the opportunity to receive a three-year-long internship as part of the 2020 intake for the Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG) training programme. The closing date for applications is Friday 13 September. All qualifying national diploma, BTech or B.Degree, graduates are welcome to apply. The City will only consider applications from unemployed South African citizens who have one of the required national diplomas in cost and management accounting; environmental health or information systems and technology. The programme exposes graduates to operations within the municipal environment. Various City departments provide the interns with the necessary practical experience. These include the water and sanitation; solid waste; transport; human settlements; information science and technology and finance departments. Their structured training plans are aligned with the respective statutory professional registration requirements of each

field to provide the graduates with the desired learning outcomes. “Thus far, the ISDG programme has made a real impact in the lives of many talented graduates who have gained invaluable experience and knowledge from experts within the City administration,” said Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle. Since the inception of the ISDG programme, the City has appointed 61 graduates representing various fields of studies, namely engineering; material science; biotechnology; chemical science; environmental science; quantity surveying and project administration. To date, 22 graduates have been appointed to permanent positions within the City. The City’s long-term strategy determines what type of expertise need to be promoted and developed among residents. In this instance, the core objective is to support the City of Cape Town’s infrastructure development goals. The ISDG programme provides the City with an opportunity to address the shortage of scarce and critical skills in various fields. The City is planning ahead to replace scarce and critical skills that they may lose

Robotics team wins silver The newly formed junior school robotics team from Christel House South Africa took home silver in the explorer category at the provincial World Robotics Olympiad (WRO). The competition took place on Saturday 3 August at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The WRO is an annual event which incorporates science, technology, education and robotics. The event brings young people from all over the world together to develop their creativity and problem-solving skills through various challenges and educational robotics competitions. The robotics team of Christel House SA has been taking part in the competition since 2017 and previously won a gold award. Robotics is still an extra-mural activity at the school and learners practice during

lunch breaks, the student life period, Fridays, Saturdays and even on public holidays. The school’s maths and computer teacher, Beverley Esterhuizen said the team had many obstacles to overcome, including limited time with resources and a lack of equipment “When we started, we only had two months of training with the full robotics set. Even so, our learner’s dedication, eagerness and love for robotics really proved to be the driving force behind our success. I couldn’t be prouder of our junior school robotics team,” said Esterhuizen.

in the coming years as employees retire. As cities expand, industries and people need to be supported with adequate services ranging from the provision of electricity and water to various other services that aid modern development beyond the basics, such as a broadband and public transport networks. By continuing to invest in infrastructure development, the City is ensuring that Cape Town has the capacity to support this growth. The key performance areas of these internships include financial control and risk management; monitoring risk compliance control; environmental health functions; community participation; development of informal settlements; IT administration; investigation, analysis and research, and communication. It should be noted that computer proficiency in MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Word, as well as a driver’s licence will be considered as an advantage for applicants. Applicants can apply via SMS by sending ISDG to 33002. V For any queries, applicants may contact hrservicedesk@capetown.gov.za or visit the City’s website for information.

One of the Grade 7 learners in the robotics team said not many school’s give their learners this kind of opportunity. “I see it as a learning opportunity where I get to do what I enjoy,” said the learner. All competing provincial teams are ranked nationally. From this ranking list, the top 10 to 15 teams will be invited to attend and compete in the national event later this month in Gauteng. Teams winning their category could be invited to represent South Africa at the WRO international event.

Learners speak up about issues LISA LOTTERING @demilottering

T

he annual Bottomup Speak Up Festival was held on Saturday 7 September at the Nassau Auditorium, Groote Schuur High School in Newlands. The Speak Up Festival is a public speaking skills programme of the non-profit organisation, Bottomup. It is the second year this programme is taking place and it aims to educate learners about critical social theory while developing strong communications skills. Learners from Zeekoevlei and Lotus River high schools and Fairmount Secondary School delivered speeches with the theme of “Recognise, Analyse and Re-imagine”. This theme aims to question the dominant narratives and stories that exist

around them by connecting their personal stories to the wider structures and systems that shape these stories. The learners spoke about issues that they experience in society and re-imagined these issues. Lotus River learner Lynn Matsvimbo spoke about emotional tax and how people are required to share their wealth with the family. She said the youth are given a responsibility. “We need to support our elderly parents,” she said. My fear is having to get educated to take care of my family. My fear is to work to sustain the responsibility my parents have to take on,” she said. Gradi Lumbila, also from Lotus, spoke about mindful racism. Lumbila said racism is something that is taught and not displayed as openly as it used to be. “Join me in re-imagining to not see colour,” he said.

Ashlyn Harland , from Fairmount, spoke about big promises and disappointments. She touched on the voting age in South Africa, youth pregnancies and the lack of jobs for the youth. “I am born free but free from what,” she asked. Harland said she hears the struggle of the youth. “Everything changes but everything stays the same,” she said. “Why should I wait till I turn 18 to make a change.” Ashley Visagie, co-owner of the Speak Up Festival said the learners explored issues that occur in society and school. Visagie said the learners worked with everyday issues and think critically about what is going on. He said the organisation invited the learners to explore these issues on a deeper level. “Action without reflection is meaningless,” he said. V For more information visit www.bottomup.org.za.

Grassy Park CPF and Grassy Park CPF meeting to be held police work together The Grassy Park community policing forum dren will be discussed; The Grassy Park community policing forum (CPF), welcomes the arrest of a man (32) after a boy (8) was shot in Parkwood Estate. According to a statement issued by Philip Bam of Grassy Park CPF, the incident took place on Saturday 31 August. “This (the arrest) shows that the police will not leave a single stone unturned in its quest to apprehend and bring to book those who harm our children through senseless violence, especially the reckless shooting,” the statement said. The Grassy Park police confiscated some guns as part of their ongoing anti-gun and gangsterism operations. “Every gun taken off our streets and from our living spaces, makes life a bit more bearable in gang-ridden areas such as Parkwood Estate in the Grassy Park police precinct,” the statement read. . Two suspects were arrested after stolen goods and an imitation gun were found in their possession. According to the statement, two guns were also confiscated on Friday 30 August and the suspects were arrested. Another gun was also confiscated on Thursday 29 August in Grassy Park “The CPF encourages police to continue their good work and we call upon communities to assist the police in making our areas safer by giving information about the whereabouts of guns and drugs,” said Melvin Jonkers, the chairman of the CPF. “Together we can make a difference and bring some normality to our living spaces,” he added. The CPF congratulates the police on a job well done.

(CPF) will host its general public meeting on Tuesday 10 September at 19:30 in the Calvin Protestant Church Hall in Grassy Park. The following will be discussed: . he junior school jazz band from Christel House South Africa, in Wetton, recently won double gold and silver at the Annual Conserve Eisteddfod in Stellenbosch. According to a statement, the event which aims to provide an opportunity for learners to express their musical abilities and skills in a safe, encouraging and inspiring environment, was organised by fourth-year music majors from Stellenbosch University (SU). The jazz band, led by music teacher, James George, impressed the

adjudicators with their performance. The learners were happy to receive positive feedback from the expert adjudicators and proud to receive their certificates. George said the school integrates music within its curriculum and has a world-class music programme. “Being part of such an event not only provided our students with a yardstick to measure their talent but also an opportunity to enrich their minds on the vast career opportunities within the music industry,” said James.

Joining hands against femicide EARL HAUPT AND NOORE NACERODIEN

P

layers, coaches, administrators, umpires and other members of both the Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) and the Cape Town Baseball Federation (CTBF) joined hands in their protest against femicide during peak traffic on the Kromboom Road bridge crossing (M5) on Friday 6 September. Passing motorists gave their approval with continuous blaring of the hooters, extending the outpouring. “A sharp increase

in recent cases of femicide has pushed South African women to the brink. Protestors took to the streets of Cape Town to show their support for women and children and the atrocities they are subjected to. Our human right to be protected in society has been grossly neglected with the increase in crime,” says CTBF public relations officer, Diedré Marquard. She adds that both the CTBF and CTSA are united in supporting the cause, because #enoughisenough.“We stood in solidarity in protest receiving support from all cars hoot-

ing as they passed by. As sporting federations, we continue to support this cause and pray for justice to be served on all those who disrespect the lives of others,” she adds. Meanwhile, newly-elected CTSA chair Hayley Carolus was grateful for the turnout experienced at Friday’s demonstration. “The executive committee wants to thank all members for joining us on Friday. “It was stepping stone towards our end goal of creating awareness around genderbased violence. Enough is enough; we need to stand together for all those who are suffer-

ing,” she said. Lorene Beukes, vice-president of CTBF’s administration hopes that the spirit of unification between the two sporting administrative bodies continues. “It’s something we had to do and have to do. The turnout was awesome; enough to make a point. Thank you to softball, and to all the ladies who were there, because it is really important. This is the first time we’ve joined for anything. I hope that the next time we join is for a happier occasion and that our relationship keeps going and gets stronger.”

Fun in the sun in Ommiedraai race Ommiedraai and Friends Athletic Club (AC) held their annual road race on Sunday 8 September in Kenilworth. According to club officials, more than 2 500 runners took part in the 10km run and walk

and a 5km fun run. Local athletes and novices came out in their numbers to support the event which meandered its way through the streets of Kenilworth and Wynberg. For many, the race was used as their final

preparation run for the Cape Town Marathon, which takes place in the city on Sunday 15 September. Here is a look at a few of those who enjoyed the day:
