Trees planted to honour women LISA LOTTERING @demilottering

lose to 100 residents from Grassy Park and Retreat planted 35 trees at Princess Vlei to mark Women’s Day and International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on Friday 9 August. Emma Oliver, secretary of the Princess Vlei Forum, said the organisation hosted its tree planting event on Friday in line with the organisation’s mandate – to restore the area which has a long history and heritage. The forum is committed to restoring the land and the water body around Princess Vlei which is a place where people want to spend time safely and happily. One of the speakers Tanya Gradwell, read a poem about Krotoa, a translator working for the Dutch during the formation of the cape colony. Representative of the Khoi/San community Princess Chantal Revell spoke about Sarah Baartman and also presented Chief Mary Jansen of the Khoi community with a book in honour of her work. The organisation planted a magical Milkwood tree with powerful historical connections in honour of The Khoi Princess after whom Princess Vlei is named. Zubeida Jaffer, award-winning author and journalist who was also active in the South African anti-apartheid and the trade union movements, said the trees served as living monuments in honour of the indigenous people and strong women. A tree was also planted to honour Jaffer and the work she has done for the country and its indigenous people. The Forum said the trees reminded them of the power of community, the strength of diversity and the importance of roots. “The trees are a powerful symbol of connection and they flourish when they grow together, connect and communicate through their roots,” Jaffer said. Residents who took part in the festivities stepped forward and planted trees in honour of different strong female relatives who made or continue to make an impact in the community. Siblings Charlene, Lorna and Anthea Houston planted a tree to remember and honour their mother. “We passed the mic around to give everyone a chance to speak. Some people planted trees to honour famous people while others planted trees to honour their mothers, women who died of cancer, their aunts, their grandmothers and women who have contributed to their lives,” said Oliver.

n additional 18 homeless people can now be accommodated at Elim Nightshelter after staff of WP Media (publishers of People’s Post, City Vision and TygerBurger) put notebooks and pens aside to make emergency waterproof sleeping bags for the shelter. This was in conjunction with Media24’s #1000 Acts of Kindness project. The sleeping bags are made with newspaper and plastic, creating a warm, portable and waterproof emergency sleeping bag for those in need. 22-year-old from Eagle Park is appealing to the community to assist those around them. Rizqah Cato, a nano-influencer, says she wants to inspire the community to do more for others and to help those in need despite the challenges faced by those living in Eagle Park, the area situated between Lotus River and Pelican Park. Nano-influencers may not have as high a number of followers as major influencers do, but the effect they have on the community is deeply felt. According to Cato, her sister and her mother have big hearts and they are always trying to do what they can for the community. She says she gets her kind-heartedness from her mother, Shamiela Dollie and sis-
Platform created to give voiceless a voice A Facebook group to give women a voice was created after the body of Ottery resident, Meghan Cremer was found last week Thursday 8 August – a day before Women’s Day was celebrated. Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the body of the 30-year-old horse lover was found in Philippi in the early hours of Thursday morning. The group, SA Woman Fight Back, was created on the same day and had 24 733 members by Monday 12 August. One of the members of the group, Stellemarie Kruize from Marina Da Gama in Vrygrond, said this group was created to give women a voice who are not in a position to use their voices because they’re either dead or being abused. “Meghan’s murder was the tipping point,” said Kruize. She said women are frustrated because their voices are not being heard. “The group is reaching out to connect with other bodies and authorities to make sure this case doesn’t go unrecognised and that her senseless death has not been in vain,” said Kruize. Kruize said men and children also suffer under the hands of abuse but this is the battle they have chosen to fight now. Van Wyk said Cremer, who lived on a farm, was reported missing on Saturday 3 August and seen wearing a green top and a pair of black tracksuit pants, and driving a white Toyota Auris at the time of her disappearance. “On the same evening at about 20:00 police arrested three men aged 27, 34 and 35 for the illegal possession of the presumably stolen motor vehicle. An investigation brought to light that the car belonged to Cremer reported as missing to local police,” says Van Wyk. Van Wyk confirmed that the investigation and search operation led the police to a sand mine on a Philippi farm on Thursday morning at around 01:00 where the body of the missing person was found. Three men, Jeremy Sias, Charles Daniels and Shiraaz Jaftha appeared in court for the murder of Cremer and were charged with illegal possession of a presumably stolen vehicle The group, SA Women Fight Back, will be hosting a No Bail Application protest for the men being accused of the Cremer’s murder on Thursday 15 August. hristel House South Africa, a nonprofit school in Ottery, announced its new board chair, Ian Russell. He is a long-standing member of Christel House, a best-selling author and a global speaker with more than 25 years’ experience of leading and strengthening large organisations around the world. Russell said he is delighted, honoured and immensely humbled to be asked to chair the Christel House South Africa Board. “The school has made the most incredible impact on the local community over
the years and I am looking forward to helping support the management of the school in driving even greater success in the future,” Russell said in a statement. The competition was a huge success and two winners were selected from each grade. The staff from JTC treated all 14 learners to a delicious meal at Ottery Hypers’ Spur last week.

Annual maintenance and routine checks, begun on Monday 8 July, was scheduled for completion on Monday 19 August. Managing director Wahida Parker announced the reopening of the cableway at a media briefing at the popular tourist destination on Wednesday 7 August. ‘Take care of yourselves’ F
inding balance between work and family life in a fast-paced environment can place significant pressure on women, affecting their mental and physical health. In celebration of International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on 9 August, the provincial department of health encourages women to prioritise their health and to work with them to find ways to improve their mental and general well-being. “Finding balance in our competitive society takes a strain on our women and families and by improving the health of women, this,
in turn, enhances the productivity, social and economic participation and development of families. “We are highlighting the importance of prevention and promotion of wellness to build healthy, resilient, wellness-conscious individuals, and families throughout the province,” says Western Cape minister of health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo. The department highlights the services available to women at its health facilities and women are encouraged to take full advantage of their free access to a range of health servi-
ces available at any public health clinic in the province. The following services are available to women: contraception; pregnancy testing; termination of pregnancy (TOP); antenatal (pre-birth) health care; birth/labour services; post-natal (after-birth) health care; cervical cancer screening; menopause care; tuberculosis (TB) and HIV screening and care; chronic condition care and management; sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening and treatment and youth-friendly clinics. The department has partnered with Nacosa to continue with the Young, Women and Girls programme in the Cape Metro Klipfontein area. This programme focuses on increasing retention in school, decreasing the HIV incidence and teenage pregnancy, accelerate prevention to reduce new HIV and TB infections and STIs, decrease gender-based violence and increase economic opportunities for our young girls and women. “To ensure that the department reaches its Healthcare 2030 goal towards becoming more person-centred, a Whole of Society Approach (WOSA) is required whereby all role-players, partners and government bodies work together to ensure that our women and their families healthcare and other social needs are met to ensure a healthier and more well-balanced lifestyle in the home,” says Mbombo. The Community-Based Services unit of the department partners with non-profit organisations (NPOs) to help women in need find well-balanced lifestyles by utilising Community Healthcare Workers (CHWs) to conduct home assessments and assist in finding suitable healthcare assist-
ance, as well as linkages for the family to local clinics and other government institutions. These home visits by community healthcare workers and healthcare professionals to women and families who are unable to visit their local health facility, form part of a new initiative introduced by the department called the Community Orientated Primary Care (COPC) project. One participant in the COPC project is Sandra Mentoor (67) from Eastridge. She receives a state pension and is the sole breadwinner to a household of five. Mentoor neglected her health to take care of her family and put food on the table. “I was very sceptical when the community health workers knocked on my door to provide home-based healthcare. I had negative experiences from state healthcare which made me avoid going to day hospitals for help,” says Mentoor. “I have diabetes and never took care of my health previously because I had to provide for my family. My neglect led to all my toes being amputated on my right foot which could have been treated and healed with proper care,” Mentoor explained. Because of the CHWs persistence to provide healthcare, Mentoor finally allowed them in her home to start treating her health problem. “Not only did they assist me and got me on the road to recovery, but they managed to link up the rest of my household with the Department of Social Development for assistance and helped to solve educational challenges my grandchildren faced,” says Mentoor. Varsity College netball rises to the occasion T he Independent Institute of Education’s (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town netball first team participated in this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament at Witwatersrand University recently. The ladies were off to a victorious start as the girls defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with a 38-31 win. “The girls played fantastically well after being promoted from C to B division. It was important that we got our USSA tour off to a winning start,” says Andrew Howitt, Varsity College Cape Town’s sports coordinator. On the second day of the tournament, the ladies unfortunately lost by the skin of their teeth, 36-35, to the Durban University of
Technology (DUT). On day three the team made a comeback with a convincing 50-33 win against Central University of Technology (CUT). The team lost their opening match on day four, 45-26, to UCT and on the same day, they bounced back by defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a 34-28 win in game two. On the last day of the tournament the team beat the University of Limpopo (UL) with a win of 48-31 in the final match of USSA tour. “As a newly promoted team the odds were stacked against us in a far more competitive division, however, coming forth to some well-established university’s insured that USSA 2019 was a success and by that we were very proud of the team,” concluded Howitt.

Cape Town streets tickled pink T
he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my title today. The vibe makes this race so special. It’s so beautiful to see all these women unite on one day and run together.” Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Beetrice Themane finished third. PinkDrive is a non-profit company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. PinkDrive was present at each event offering free clinical breast examinations and educating on the importance of self- breast examinations.
