rade 9 learners at Sibelius High School took a walk in firefighters’ shoes – literally – to learn more about their role in the community. The high school’s deputy principal Fuad Viljoen said the opportunity for learners to participate in a five-hour-long fire and safety course was one they could not pass up. “Our school isn’t only about preparing learners for Grade 12 but also developing them holistically in terms of preparing them for the world of work. “That’s why we grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and I think the learners thoroughly enjoyed themselves,” he says.

A Western Cape education department initiative, the course was hosted by SA Fire Watch, a compliance company that provides a range of services in the fire industry, at its Ottery Youth Care Centre. Philip Jackson, the teacher who accompanied the learners, said the course shifted their paradigms, made them safety-conscious and equipped them with a set of vital skills. “Often, especially in summer, there are quite a few fires – particularly in the informal settlement. “(It’s valuable) because of what is happening in our vicinities – and to empower them in the community in case of fire,” said Jackson. Viljoen added that many of the children came from Overcome Heights where a large

number of shacks had been lost to fires this year. Jackson said their newfound knowledge would also play an invaluable role in case of a fire or a fire-related emergency at the school. He said they planned to carry out fire drills to keep the training fresh in learners’ minds. Both Viljoen and Jackson thanked the organisations that made this possible for their learners, adding that it ignited an interest in school which many learners did not have before. “It was an amazing experience and they wanted to learn more. The learners were asking the firefighters which school subjects they needed to become firefighters – maths, physics and chemistry,” Jackson said. .

Tips to keep kids safe In the wake of the kidnappings which have made headlines over the last few months, Fidelity ADT has issued a general alert to all residents. Teach your children: . They must always walk to or from school with a friend or friends. . If they get picked up at school, they should never leave the premises. . Younger children particularly must never get into a stranger’s car; even if the stranger claims that someone they love is hurt and that they have been sent to pick them up. . Consider using a password system. If the person collecting them from school cannot repeat the password you and your child agreed on, they should not get into the car. . If a stranger approaches your child, they should not talk to them. . If your child does encounter any suspicious activity, encourage them to get a good look and memorise their physical details and clothing, as well as their vehicle. . Make sure your children memorise their full names, address and phone number, as well as emergency contacts. Using a play phone, teach them when and how to dial 10111. Remind students: . Older children should be reminded to keep their valuables out of sight at all times and not to use headphones because dampens the ability to sense surroundings. . Alter their route: If they are walking home or to public transport they need to alter their route. “If you feel threatened, you can at least knock on someone’s door for help if you’re walking through a familiar neighbourhood.” . If you are using a taxi service, ensure it is a bona fide service provider. . Be extra cautious to go and meet anyone who befriends you on social media. Always meet in a public space with two or three friends as backup. . Be cautious to be lured by people offering you a job or modelling contract.

Win movie tickets

Principal, school acknowledged

This weekend, look forward to a new release with the sequel to a modern remake of a classic fairytale; Maleficent, mistress of evil, opening at Ster-Kinekor Cine Prestige, Cavendish Square.

Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and dark new forces at play. The movie opens on Friday 18 October. Another movie currently on the circuit is Joker, which opened on Friday 4 October. Joker is a movie about a gritty character study of Arthur Fleck, a man disregarded by society.

annemeyer Primary School has celebrated a win as school principal Ridwan Samsodien has won a national special recognition award in the Woolworths Educational Programme and MySchool Teacher’s Day Competition. Samsodien was entered into the competition by Grade 6 learner, Leah Mohamed. A record of almost 50 000 South African school children nominated their outstanding teachers in the 10th anniversary year of the competition. With this year’s theme “Let’s celebrate those that shine”, learners from across the country, in all phases of school, were asked to tell their story of the teacher who has been the shining star making a difference in their young lives. Leah’s heartfelt letter of motivation caught the attention of the judges, and Samsodien joined nine other competition finalists. Samsodien, who is passionate about promoting literacy and the benefits of becoming a lifelong reader, is an inspiring and deeply caring leader in his school community who encourages value-driven citizenship. Leah also noted in her letter that he plays an active role in involving parents and in encouraging learners to achieve greatness. She said: “Mr Samsodien is passionate about giving the best to the learners and making school a place where children want to be every day … Mr Samsodien truly is a magnificent principal, he calls us Grade 6 learners the ‘stunning sixes’; the Grade 7s, ‘super sevens’; fantastic fives, fabulous fours, terrific threes, thriving two’s, our one and only ones and radiant Rs. “Mr Samsodien truly sees the talents in each one of us.” A cash prize of R10 000 was awarded to Samsodien and Kannemeyer Primary School received R10 000. For her participation in the 2019 Teachers Day competition, Leah was awarded R6 000 which will be allocated towards her educational needs. Pieter Twine, general manager of the Woolworths Education Programme and MySchool MyVillage My Planet fundraising programme, says: “We congratulate all

Buzz at annual Halaal exhibition NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

L

ocal and international business people flocked to the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) in support of the annual Africa Halaal Week. The week was celebrated from Monday 7 October to Wednesday 9 October. The celebration was hosted by Wesgro in partnership with the department of economic development and tourism and the City of Cape Town. The event started with a business networking function and was followed by a two-day-long exhibition. There were over 64 halaal stalls offering unique products from beverages and food to fashion, Muslim banking and media. Towfiq Hendricks, head of the district unit, said the event has grown as compared to last year, and this proves the increased demand for more exposure for Muslim businesses across the continent. He said the future of businesses is in the positive networking and marketing, which Wesgrow is determined to provide. He said Africa Halaal Week is not aimed at celebrating the religion or culture, but it provides support to businesses. Zaida Enver, the event organiser, said having 24 international buyers and a lot of people coming to support the exhibition was the best part of the event. She, however, said numbers alone would not be satisfactory, but “to see business taking place, seeing the exchange of business cards and watching exhibitors and buyers is what makes me happy. That is what this exhibition is about.” Local entrepreneurs said this creates a great platform to market their products, and it was amazing to see

other entrepreneurs showing interest in their work. Jennikle Roux, general manager at Healey’s Cheese, had not made any sales at the time of doing the interview, but said: “I have created leads and exchanged business cards. That is good, because we are here to showcase our work. For orders, we will definitely have to make follow-ups with the prospective buyers.” Another entrepreneur, Frits van Ryneveld of Darling Sweets, said the exhibition was educational for him as he got to learn about the expectations of bulk buyers from different aspects of the continent. He was also impressed by the mutual interest in the use of recyclable material within the business sector. He said the boxes and sweet wraps they use at his business are recyclable, and guests at the exhibition were impressed by the concept. An international buyer, Zachary D. Lee, from Malaysia, was impressed by the variety of halaal products South Africa has to offer. His interest was in Rooibos products, saying his pharmacy uses it in manufacturing medicines and herbal products. He said he was able to learn more about the variety of products that South Africans use it for, and how it is best packaged. David Maynier, the provincial minister of finance and economic opportunities, said the department was delighted to host a successful Halaal Week for a second time. He said the province is home to a large Muslim population and is among the world’s most friendly destination for Muslims. Maynier said this year’s event is a great example of the provincial government focus on export-led growth in the halaal economy.

FUTURE SOCCER STARS COME TOGETHER: The City of Cape Town applauds all those that participated in the four-day-long Lucky Star Cup at Hartleyvale Stadium in Observatory. The ninth annual tournament kicked off on Thursday 3 October and ended on Sunday 6 October. It saw 128 local teams playing against each other, with up to 1 500 junior players showcasing their skills. They were joined by the development teams from Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns FC, Kaizer Chiefs and the KwaZulu-Natal Football Academy. Mayor Dan Plato says events like these showcase and provide a platform for future stars of this country while bringing diverse groups of people together. Zahid Badroodien, Mayco member for community services and health, adds that the City’s involvement in the tournament is affirmation of its commitment to supporting youth development and investment, providing opportunities for youth to realise their full potential.

It is quick and easy to share any security information or warnings on social media but if you didn’t confirm its authenticity before posting, you might end up doing more damage than you think. We are seeing more and more fake news posts relating to crime warnings and other security and safety news hitting the likes of Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp. The intention might appear to have been noble and praiseworthy but it often turns out to have been in reality driven by less than honest motives. These items often fuel the agenda of an individual or group and promote fearmongering based on false information. By forwarding the information you are promoting fake news. When it comes to securityrelated fake news, the effects are all the more harmful. Criminals are often behind security-related fake news items. Their objective is to promote their own selfish agenda, whatever that may be.

It can lead to wasted resources. The police and security companies may respond to a particular fake news item claiming an incident has happened, for example, while criminals target another area. This is why it is so important to verify any information you receive before forwarding it. It is also important to watch what photographs you post. Posting a photo of an alleged suspect could result in that case potentially being thrown out of court at a later date. The important thing to remember is – if there is any doubt as to the legitimacy of the information, don’t share it. Information can be verified through the police or other security authorities. We all need to be responsible when it comes to spreading information, especially relating to safety and security. Otherwise, we could be responsible for igniting fires where there are no fires at all. JADE HANNING, Fidelity ADT Cape Town South district manager

1 Listener can nW WIN it all!!

e are approaching the festive season, and there can surely be no better time to recognise the power of an age-old African community savings mechanism: the stokvel. Stokvels have been the savings ‘engine room’ for South African communities through apartheid and into democracy; and they remain very effective today, even within the context of the country’s troubling poverty. According to research, R44 billion is saved collectively by 820 000 stokvels in South Africa each year, and more than 11 million South Africans are currently members of stokvels. In addition, according to the National Stokvel Association of South Africa, our stokvel market is worth more than some of South Africa’s largest businesses. The vibrancy of local stokvels is one of the reasons why most of the major financial brands have launched specific accounts and services to meet their needs. Although the stokvel has traditionally been a cash-based community savings tool, today a whopping 41% are considered ‘banked’ and use, at the very least, a transactional account. There are a lot of money management options out there for stokvel leaders to consider. These range from opportunities to take advantage of the better interest rates paid by investment accounts to shopping discounts offered by bulk buying. There’s no question that with smart decision making the group’s money can be made to work harder, but for this to be true there has to be a careful analysis of costs versus rewards. (It is important to examine) the fine print of any financial product for additional costs, including hidden monthly membership charges, along with additional line items buried in obscure terms and conditions text. This is the golden rule for all financial products. You can win or lose a lot in the fine print – and if you have never even read this text or understood it, there’s a good chance your collective could be losing money. Individual stokvel members might also be able to put away more money than they think. The key again lies in understanding fine print of financial products such as credit life insurance, which members most likely pay for on their credit facilities. Yalu’s name has become synonymous with credit life insurance, the least understood form of long-term insurance in the South African market. Credit life insurance covers borrowers’ debt in the case of retrenchment, disability or death. This type of insurance is sometimes mandatory and is generally offered by the same financial institution offering the loan. The premiums charged for such policies can vary, and as a result a lot of consumers find themselves unwittingly paying the maximum possible premium every month – creating room for savings if they were to choose a different provider. As always, information is crucial. Because many consumers aren’t aware of the details of their credit life insurance policies, they’re losing out on potential savings every month, and this money could contribute significantly to their overall savings efforts. Once people understand this, they are more likely to take the simple steps they need to in order to reduce their monthly commitments. As most stokvel members are already aware, there are only two ways to improve your financial situation: spend less or save more. In both areas, paying attention to all the details of financial products and services can have a big impact on the individual, and therefore the group. If, as a broad South African society, we improve this skill, our stokvel heritage will grow stronger than it already is. -Nkazi Sokhulu, cofounder and chief executive officer at credit life insurance brand, Yalu.

he start of the Cape Town Baseball Federation’s new season kicked off this past weekend which included a new league structure for the Major League and Promotion League teams. The Major League has reverted to an eight-team league with last season’s top six, Bothasig Knights, Bellville Tygers, Athlone A’s, Maitland Giants, VOB Macaws and Durbanville Villains joined by the top two from last season’s Major League B: Van der Stel and Grassy Park Crusaders. The Promotional League now consists of Westridge Yankees, Helderberg Pirates, Thistle, Battswood, Milnerton Mavericks, Lansdowne Eagles and Silvertree Titans. The Major League opening fixtures saw VOB Macaws capitalise on Athlone A’s six errors to run out 9-7 winners at Vangate Sports Complex on Saturday 12 October. A’s out hit VOB 7-4 leaving nine runners on base compared to VOB’s eight. National team pitcher Dean Jacobs started the pitching for A’s and was badly let down by his defence to allow three runs in the first innings from two hits, a single by Jarryd Haynes and a triple by Luke November, two errors and a walk. VOB moved to a 3-0 lead after scoring another run in the second inning from a walk and a hit from Lance Gordon. Jacobs settled and kept VOB scoreless for the next two innings. Meanwhile, A’s were struggling to get to grips with the pitching of Michael Scritten with most flying the ball into the south-easterly wind. Jacobs conceded four hits and gave three walks while striking out four hitters in his four inning pitched. He was then replaced by Shelton Trotsky. Trotsky walked the first two batters he faced - one hit by pitch, while he was sabotaged by his infield who committed four errors allowing VOB to score five runs in the fifth inning. A’s threatened in the fourth when 16-yearold rookie Tariq Adams got his first major league hit to centre field and stole second base on the next pitch. Cameron Fortuin then drew a walk, however, a shallow flyball to shortstop by Reid Groenewald was caught by Marvin Mahoney and he put Adams out at second base. A’s scored their first run in the fifth inning when Trotsky lead off with a stand-up double, the first of three doubles. Josh Wentzel then squeezed a hit between third and shortstop which advanced Trotsky to third. Wentzel stole second base before Matthew

Trotsky then kept VOB scoreless for the next three innings before making way for Diedericks who struck out the last three VOB hitters. A’s continued creeping back in the seventh inning when Trotsky again lead off the inning with a stand-up double. A’s scored two runs from his hit, two walks and an error. In the eight innings A’s scored a further four runs from three hits, a walk and an error. This took the score to 9-7 in VOB’s favour. VOB kept their cool in the last inning o seal the win. In another fixture Bellville Tygers were too strong for Durbanville Villains, winning 12-6. After four innings, Tygers led 3-0 . Durbanville, however, briefly took the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring six runs from four hits and four errors committed by Tyg-

ers. Tygers regained the lead scoring five runs from four hits and two errors to hold an 8-6 lead. Durbanville threatened again in the sixth inning with bases loaded none down. Terence White however grounded to first base and was put out by Allan Randall who also played home for the advancing runner to be put out for Tygers to record their second double play of the game. They also had one in the third inning. Tygers went on to score a further four runs in the eighth inning. Randall who came off the bench batted 3 for 3 and Jonathan Phillips 2 for 4 were Tygers best hitters. Tygers started with national pitcher Kevin Townend who pitched five innings conceded three hits, gave four walks and struck out five Durbanville hitters. He was briefly replaced by Russell Olivier who faced four hitters before Anthony Phillips pitched the last three innings. Durbanville also started with their own

national pitcher Stuart Baron who threw four innings conceding three hits, three walks and struck out seven Tygers hitters. He was replaced by Darren Smith, who returned to the club after a few seasons at Bothasig Knights. Smith came in for some heavy punishment from the Tygers hitters who took eight hits from Smith’s four innings pitched. He also walked one hitter whilst striking out four. Durbanville made five errors compared to Tygers four. In other Major League results, Maitland Giants beat Grassy Park Crusaders 15-10 and Bothasig Knights thumped Van Der Stel 33-5. In the Promotion League Westridge Yankees had the upper hand on Helderberg Pirates beating them 11-8, Milnerton Mavericks beat Lansdowne Eagles 13-2 and Silvertree Titans struggled against Battswood losing 19-1.
