Making reading exciting LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
K
annemeyer Primary School principal, Ridwan Samodien, says he would do anything to develop a love for reading among learners. The school opened its first red reading telephone booth on Friday 6 September. According to Samodien there’s a perception that principals are failing their learners and he felt like he had the task of doing everything in his ability to develop a love for reading and understanding among the learners. He says he saw a picture on social media of a booth and he could not get it out of his mind. “I got in contact with one of our old learners and sent him the picture of the booth, and I guess, he also could not stop thinking about it either as he then manufactured the booth and donated one to the school,” Emilé Coetzee, a learner who attended the school in 1976, says he spoke to Samodien who had this vision of promoting literacy. “Children don’t read anymore and we decided to build this booth to develop reading,” he says. Coetzee, who works at Equip Set Construction, says the intention is to build a booth for every grade. “We want children to read because when we were at school, we couldn’t.” Coetzee says the bigger picture is for this to catch on at other schools. “We want to start a reading revolution. Let’s motivate the learners and let’s
make it easy for them to have access to books,” he says. He added that he wants the learners to be able to read whenever they want to. He says he took on this challenge and is committed. “Even if it is not a booth, the purpose remains the same. We want to find ways to make reading exciting.” When the learners saw the booth, you could immediately see the excitement on their faces, he says adding that “they love it.” The reading booth is located in the courtyard of the school and learners are welcome to collect a book to read while sitting on the benches. Ashlyn Govender, one of the Grade 3B learners, says the reading booth has enabled her to learn more words. “When I read, I get better in reading. When I look at the booth it feels like a rainbow. The book booth gives me an imagination,” she says. Govender says the book booth also makes her feel like she’s in London. Thaakir Ismail, another learner from the school, says he also enjoys the reading booth. “It’s big and red and I am very happy about the booth,” says Ismail. Samodien says the school is challenging the alumni to pay it forward so that the school can provide even more book booths for learners. “We are challenging our former learners to do so whether it is through donating a book, spend time reading to the learners or any other donation.” V To get involved with this project, send an email to Ridwan.head@kannemeyerps.org.

“I do it out of love, nothing else,” says Ma Sally. “I don’t ask, I knit the jerseys. When it’s cold I think ‘Oh, there’s a child with a jersey on’.” Ma Sally, who is a retired domestic assistant, says knitting is therapeutic to her. “For me, it’s like a therapy. It keeps my brain working.” Ma Sally, who grew up in the countryside of Groot Drankenstein, moved to Cape Town at the age of 17 following her parents’ divorce in the late 1950s. “I had to leave school to go work before completing my senior certificate. Then I came to Cape Town in my early years and started working as a domestic servant until I got married to my husband,” she says. “18 January 1969,” her husband Joseph adds to the conversation. According to Ma Sally, she had a relatively stable life from then. “I had a place to stay in District 6. We lived there for 10 years, in a room. Then we bought this little house and we’re still here, for 40 years.” Ma Sally and Joseph have two daughters: José Franz, who is deputy vice-chancellor of the University of the Western Cape, and Deirdre Spandiel, an occupational therapist in George. Ma Sally says, she gave up working as a domestic assistant 30 years ago when her first grandchild, Jody, was born so that José could return to her studies. “That’s when I carried on with my love for knitting,” says Ma Sally, who believes that those whom she knits for don’t have to know where the jerseys come from. She says there is no greater feeling than being able to continue serving the world.
Even though Ma Sally prefers knitting in plain wool for schools she supplies from the goodness of her heart, her talent and meditative concentration skills are visible in the jumpers she knitted for herself and her husband for their getaway later in the year. PHOTO: BENITA JAFTHA
children to continue the tradition of serving their communities. “I thank God that my children and grandchildren are giving,” Ma Sally says. “I wrote this morning in my memory book that it’s all by God’s grace, nothing else. We have nothing without God’s grace.” Despite having five grandchildren, Ma Sally says she does not knit for her grandchildren’s school. “I don’t knit for a school where my grandchildren go, because their parents can afford. I am knitting for schools where there is a need.” Ma Sally says she prefers good quality wool and ensures to always source wool accordingly. “I always buy the best wool. When you do something for the Lord, you give your best – that’s my belief.” She was nominated for a Community Champions Elders Award by Parkvale Primary through one of the school’s regular volunteer assistants, Rhonda Arendse. “Ma Sally is a loving, caring, wingless angel,” Arendse wrote in the nomination. “Every year she hand-knits jerseys for the needy learners at our school, all this done at no cost.” She produces eight to 10 jerseys at a time for learners, Sarah “Ma Sally” Dantu (centre) surrounded by her angels: her husband, Joseph and members of The which she distributes in abunShining Light community group (from left) Pauline Williams, Charlotte Frazenberg, Johanna Stephens, dance and at no cost, through Rhonda Arendse, Hohanna Bloys, Cathlene Roman and Wilemina Felix. “Like I say, it’s like a therapy,” explains Ma Sally. “Knowing that I can do good at this age is a feeling money can’t buy.” Ma Sally is regarded as a mother figure in The Shining Light social community group she belongs to. Use alternative routes The public is warned about the expected traffic interruptions due to roadworks at the V&A Waterfront on Dock Road from Wednesday 18 September to Saturday 30 November. The construction work will include the upgrade of the bulk water pipeline alongside Dock Road. Construction signage will be put in place to mark out the work areas and flagmen will be visible to direct motorists. Motorists are advised to use of the “faster flowing exits” via Granger Bay Boulevard or Portswood Road to join the Helen Suzman Boulevard. The closures will take place as follows: . Throughout the construction period, one lane in the outbound carriage-way will be closed to traffic. All cars will be diverted into the open lane while the works take place. All works will take place inside the closure. In-bound traffic onto Dock Road will be unaffected. Pedestrians will be diverted at Ebenezer Circle using appropriate
signage. . From Wednesday 6 to Wednesday 20 November one lane in the inbound carriageway will be closed to traffic after hours (offpeak) to do excavation (diggings) work across the road. All cars will be diverted into the open lane while the works take place and the working area will be adequately marked. Motorists are warned to drive with care, as they will be driving over metal plate covers on a small section of the road during this period. . Between Wednesday 9 October and Monday 4 November the outbound of the South Arm Road, the trench will be excavated from the middle towards the pavement in the inbound carriage-way. One lane will be closed to traffic. All cars will be diverted into an open lane while the works take place. This phase will also take place after hours. Excavations will be closed using metal plate covers to allow traffic to flow during the day.

GRASSY PARK
Nicole inspires the community LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
T
he secretary of Grassy Park community policing forum (CPF), Nicole Jacobus, was described as an example to young people when she received the Woman of Excellence Award on Thursday 5 September. The 30-year-old Grassy Park resident has been working for the CPF for roughly eight years. In 2015, she was elected as the secretary of the CPF after serving as a normal member. She is also an executive member of the CPF and has maintained excellent relationships with police officers and is trusted by the community. The CPF has great admiration for the role women play to keep the community safe. In a statement, Philip Bam, public relations officer of the organisation, said these women leave their homes at night to patrol the streets of Grassy Park, Ottery, Lotus River, and New Horizon in the Grassy Park police precinct. “They are all worthy of admiration and praise,” he said. Jacobus always manages to find time to do community work despite her responsibilities towards her job. According to her, it is important for women to join CPFs because sometimes people need more of a mother figure in organisations. Jacobus said for several years she was a volunteer for a well-known dis-
aster management team before she joined the CPF. She said she does not look for recognition because community work should be a passion. “You have to be a people’s person, but I’m honoured to have received this award,” she added. Jacobus, an active patroller of the Carola neighbourhood watch has a full-time job as a front of house manager, so when she is not working for the CPF, she is focused on her job, family and friends. In the statement, the CPF referred to her as the go-to person for neighbourhood watches during emergencies. “She has a bank of emergency numbers available whenever a neighbourhood watch has an emergency,” the statement said. In the statement, she is described as knowledgeable when it comes to dealing with accident scenes and can activate emergency services for the neighbourhood watches even before the police attend to the scene. Jacobus said the CPF makes a difference but that comes with many challenges and criticism. Sometimes we have three or four meetings a week which the community doesn’t know of. “We all make ourselves available to engage with the community as well,” she said. Jacobus said it feels good to help the next person even if it’s just to give advice to someone. “Love your neighbour as you would love yourself.”
Melvin Jonkers (right), the chairman of the Grassy Park CPF handed the Woman of Excellence Award to Nicole Jacobus.

FAMILY HEALTH DAY
Prioritising community health RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he eighth annual Rotary Family Health Day will tend to the health needs of residents from Fish Hoek, Red Hill, Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Simon’s Town – for free. The annual health event will take place from Monday 30 September to Friday 4 October. It will be held in a different community each day. The event previously ran over three days, but this year it has been extended to five to include visits to Simon’s Town and Fish Hoek. Bev Frieslich from the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope says this is the first year the services will be available in these two areas. “Now we can cover every part of our community. We’ve never been in Simon’s Town before and there are people in Fish Hoek who also can’t afford medical services,” she says. The global Rotary Club has identified several challenges faced by South Africans. One of the most concerning is the statistic
that 2 500 young women become infected with HIV every week. Under-resourced areas often lack health education and services. The club hopes to address these needs. Blood pressure and glucose testing, HIV testing and counselling, screening for sexually transmitted infections, vision testing, malnutrition screening, deworming and provision of Vitamin A supplements for children will be provided. Gillian Anderson, president of the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope, says this will be of great benefit to people who can’t go to a doctor. “We’re offering comprehensive screenings.” Frieslich adds: “City council sisters and Living Hope nursing staff will be doing basic testing and it’s all free. “Rotarians are there to help the community. We want to identify people who may have blood pressure issues and help them – and mothers can bring their babies for their check-ups. “We’re also going to have recycling initiatives.”
Here are a list of dates and times: . Monday 30 September: Ocean View – Community Centre: 09:00 to 15:00; . Tuesday 1 October: the Red Hill Library – Site C: 09:00 to 13:00; . Wednesday 2 October: Masiphumelele – Community Centre: 09:00 to 15:00; . Thursday 3 October: Simon’s Town – Town Hall: 09:00 to 13:00; . Friday 4 October: Fish Hoek – Civic Centre Main Hall: 09:00 to 15:00. The club is looking for volunteers and professionals to assist with the following services: blood donor and bone marrow registration site, audiology testing, information on male breast cancer, water and sanitation management, hand-washing, nutrition and food gardens, exercise and sports facilities, plastic recycling, garbage and refuse collection. Family Health Day will be held place across the country during October. V To contribute towards the health day or for more information, contact Bev Frieslich at bevfrieslich@telkomsa.net or on 082 825 6053, or visit www.rfhdsouthafrica.co.za.
Support Cupcake Day to help kids with cancer The most devastating words a parent can ever hear are “your child has cancer”. Many parents and children face this reality daily and need support. Not only does Cupcakes of Hope offer support, but it also creates awareness of childhood cancer and educates people on the early signs thereof. This non-profit company is a community-driven project which aims to raise funds for children with cancer; they do this through their love of baking cupcakes. With September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Cupcakes of Hope’s main fundraising event is National Cupcake Day 4 Kids with Cancer on Saturday 28 September. It takes place at Blue Route Mall in the Clicks court on the ground floor from 09:00. Cupcakes will be on sale at R10 each. V If you are able to donate any decorated cupcakes, email Dominique Taylor at domtaylor@me.com.

Heritage celebrations in New Horizon The New Horizon civic association, in conjunction with New Horizon neighbourhood watch and with assistance from the City, will host its Heritage Day celebrations on Tuesday 24 September. The event will take place in New Horizon on the open field at Starling and Weaver roads and will start at 08:00 while the procession will start at 09:00. The theme is “Indigenous Games” and the children will be in groups: Kaapse Klopse, Khoisan, Indians and Africans. This year we are planning to involve more children and youth who will partake in the old-fashioned games like three sticks, kennetjie, blocks, five stones and more. V For information phone Mariam Davids on 061 428 3649. Donations are welcome and needed to feed as many children and elderly.
Project needs donation Cape Town Association for the Physically Disabled is appealing for donations of nonperishable food for its annual Buckets of Hope Project. The project will run until December. The food donations will be distributed to registered clients at the association during December to spread some festive cheer to those in need. Cash donations are also welcomed. It can be dropped off at 152 Tarentaal Road in Bridgetown. V For more information or collections, phone Fatima or Nadheerah on 021 637 1204.

HERITAGE MONTH
Celebrating marine life heritage NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
A
s part of the ongoing Heritage Month celebrations, Two Oceans Aquarium will host a unique commemoration focusing on a range of species housed at the aquarium. The aquarium will raise awareness on South Africa’s natural and marine heritage through its online audience, using social media posts and blogs. Renée Leeuwner, spokesperson for the aquarium, says heritage is
not just about buildings and artefacts, but also about the country’s endemic animals, marine life and plants that only few people know about. “The more people learn about our natural and marine heritage, the more they will grow to love it, and be inspired to look after it. Whether it is our cultural, traditional or environmental heritage, continued awareness is important,” says Renée. She calls on the public to consider learning about marine heritage and protecting it beyond Heritage Month.
Among others, there will be emphasis on the Galjoen, a mid-sized fish, with oval-shaped, flattened bodies with symmetrical dorsal and anal fins, giving them a distinctive “Snapchat logo” shape. The Galjoen is South Africa’s national fish. “There are so many things that we can be truly proud of. We live in an incredibly biodiverse country. “Just look at the City Nature Challenge that took place earlier this year – Cape Town won,” Renée says. V For more information visit: www.aquarium.co.za.

PURE JOY AS CENTRAL SEAL HISTORIC LEAGUE WIN: Players from Central Hockey Club celebrate after the final whistle to seal the victory for the Western Province Grand Challenge league title after they beat Pinelands 6-1 at Vygieskraal on Saturday 14 September. They went on a 15 game unbeaten streak this season to clinch league honours, which the club last won 20 years ago. PHOTO: RASHIED ISAACS
he annual three-day Softball South Africa (SSA) Masters tournament will kick-off at Turfhall Softball Stadium on Saturday 21 September. Organisers promise the event is going to be “bigger and better than ever before” as a record number of 20 ladies’ teams are scheduled to take part in this year’s tournament. “The Masters, a division of SSA, utilises this event to honour those sporting legends, heroes and icons that made a significant contribution to the development, transformation and growth of softball in South Africa,” says SSA spokesperson Karen Blanchard. Last year’s ladies winner, Westridge Yankees Maestros, will be back to defend their title. However, Battswood, Blackheath, Kenfac Phillies, Michigan, Table View Tornados and Mandela Bay Flamingos (all the way from the Eastern Cape) are the newcomers to watch. In the men’s division, last year’s winners, Flames, are back in action, with Cape Town teams Pirates, Khayelitsha Eagles and Table View Tornados to garner some strong support from locals.
SSA says there will be enough to keep the crowds entertained throughout the tournament, with live broadcasting of other weekend sporting action on the clubhouse’s big screen. “The tournament falls in September, which is Heritage Month. Our theme for the tournament is: ’Celebrating Heritage in Diversity’. We have introduced a heritage prize for the team that best displays heritage and diversity in colour,” adds Blanchard, confirming that the winner will receive R5 000. The local softball fraternity joined hands with their baseball counterparts to show their solidarity against gender-based violence. “With the violence happening in our country, we need to celebrate our heritage, our diversity and remind each other of Ubuntu, I am because we are. “As Softball Masters Organisation, we pledge to use sport to celebrate our heritage and to strengthen our social cohesion. We sincerely thank the media in advance for their support in covering the Masters Tournament. The countdown has officially begun,” says Blanchard.
