Soccer legends honoured AVRIL FILLIES
S
occer enthusiasts have the opportunity to not only honour seven living legends from the first professional soccer club Ramblers, but also the u.10 youth team that won the Dubai Super Cup in 2018. Four of the living legends are in Cape Town, two in Australia and one in Canada. The four legends from Cape Town that will be honoured on Saturday 30 November at the Country Manor Schaapkraal are: Conrad “Coenie” Stuurman, Robert “Bobby” Proctor, Basil “Puzzy” Jansen and Vincent “Vince” Belgians. “The Legends is a voluntary organisation chaired by ex-soccer player Edries Burton and was established to assist all soccer players, but especially the older ones who did not earn much money in their time and often do not have any funds when a crisis arises. The four octogenarians/septagenarians we are honouring are the oldest members of the organisation and the only remaining members of what was known as Ramblers FC back in the days,” says Naadir Hodgson, manager of the Mini Soccer Academy, as part of Tramways Football Club. On Saturday 2 November, a benefit tournament was played for the legends and on Tuesday 5 November they were entertained by the South African Football Association (Safa) with a lunch. “The youngsters we are honouring are the boys who won the u.10 Dubai Super Cup in April 2018, won the Clyde-Pinelands u.12 tournament in November 2018 and won the Blackpool u.11 Schools tournament earlier this year. They were an integral part of the Tramway FC u.12 team that won the Tygerberg District knockout cup a month ago and recently won the Lucky Star/FC KAPSTADT u.11 Cup competition. They will be travelling to Portugal in April 2020 to participate in the Cascais Iber Cup competition,” Hodgson says. The fundraiser is themed “honouring the legends” and starts at 19:30 for 20:00. The price is R250 per person and a four course

apartheid era. “Our guest speaker will be Nasief Morris, ex-Bafana Bafana and international player. The tickets include entertainment and an auction besides the meal and we encourage
all (old) football supporters to buy one and join us in celebrating the careers of these retired football pioneers,” Hodgson says. V To order tickets (no tickets will be sold at the door) phone Naadir on 082 890 7309.

Man (42) says early diagnosis saved his life
Dr Karlheinz Jehle and Darren Robertson ready to take on the Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race. PHOTO: ANGELA GSELL
People's Post is published by WP Media, a subsidiary of Media24. GRASSY PARK 21 838 copies distributed Tuesdays to the following areas: Fairways, Grassy Park, Ottery, Parkwood, Zeekoevlei, Lotus River, Montague's Gift and Schaapkraal.
For financial planner Darren Robertson (42), his prostate cancer diagnosis a year ago was the beginning of a journey which took him from the first visit to urologist Dr Karlheinz Jehle, to a friendship that has seen the two men riding the three-day FNB Wines2Whales Mountain Bike Race together this year. Robertson is a Mo Bro for Movember (www.za.movember.com), a global men’s health charity tackling prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Robertson describes his cancer journey as being “surprisingly positive”. But that doesn’t mean it was easy. He and his wife Loren first heard he had prostate cancer about eight months after the birth of their daughter Rebecca. Robertson was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer, but a full biopsy carried out after his prostate and seminal vessels were removed in January, showed that his cancer was actually stage 3, and that it had invaded his lymph nodes. “I was lucky,” he says. “If I had not gone for the check up, and if my GP had not suggested a full blood test and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) measurement, it would have been a very different story.” It was during one of his check-ups with
Dr Jehle that the two men got talking about mountain biking. “He had some mountain biking pictures on the wall, and it wasn’t long before we decided to go on some rides,” Robertson says. Dr Jehle says he didn’t imagine it would lead to them undertaking the Wines2Whales (28 to 30 October) together. “But when Darren suggested to me that it would be a great way to spread the Movember word about the importance of early detection and regular check-ups, I agreed immediately,” he says. Jehle lauds Robertson for his bravery in speaking out about his prostate cancer diagnosis. The disease is the leading cancer among South African men. As many as one in five South African men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, with black men more likely to get a more aggressive form of prostate cancer, and at a younger age. “Men are dying too soon because they are not going for screenings. The rule of thumb is to have your prostate checked at 45 if you are black or if you have a family history of the disease, and at 50 for everyone else. But if you are worried, go sooner,” he says. “Early detection of prostate cancer can
make all the difference. It is so important that men realise that life after a prostate cancer diagnosis is not as bad as you think. It is not the end of your sex life!” Robertson agrees: “I felt calm and supported through the whole process,” he says. “Even the dreaded digital exam wasn’t as bad as everyone makes out – it was so quick and painless. Take it from me – an early cancer diagnosis is immeasurably better than leaving it too late.” Chief executive and founder of the Men’s Foundation, which manages the Movember campaign in South Africa under license from the Global Movember Foundation, Garron Gsell says: “We have a long way to go until no man dies of prostate cancer. Our sons, partners, fathers, brothers and friends are facing these challenges and we need your help.” This year’s Movember campaign encourages everyone to “grow, move or host”. All funds raised will go to awareness campaigns, research and survivor programmes linked to men’s health in South Africa. MOVEMBER
Speaking out on men’s health NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
T
he Public is urged to support the annual Movember Campaign aimed at raising awareness about men’s health. This appeal was made during the informal discussion about the topic at the Groote Schuur Hospital on Thursday 7 November. The discussion was a collaboration between two non-profit organisations (NPOs), Project Peacock and Men’s Foundation.
Dr Justin Howlett, a urologist at Groote Schuur Hospital, represented Project Peacock as he is its co-founder, while Men’s Foundation was represented by Garron Gsell, the chief executive and its founder. They were joined by a prostate cancer survivor Jacob Abrahams who is one of the patients the campaign has helped. They all spoke about men’s health issues with more focus on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. They also touched on challenges
faced by the affected people, and the availability of treatment. They also talked about the fairly new Low Dose Rate (LDR) brachytherapy exclusively available at Groote Schuur. Howlett says LDR is a form of radiation therapy that helps mostly if the diagnosis is done at the early stage of cancer and guarantees a cure. He says since the treatment was discovered under the belt of Project Peacock, it has so far helped 36 men in two years at an average cost of R35 000

per patient. Howlett says the price is lower than in the private sector, which has in the past made it impossible for most men to access the treatment due to the high cost. He says the treatment at Groote Schuur is made possible through the kindness of initiatives such as Movember led by Men’s Foundation. This is an international foundation focusing on raising awareness and supporting healthy living among men, creating platforms for discussion, fundraising, and support structures to make it comfortable to seek help and talk about the issues. Gsell says that though over the years there has been an improvement in eradicating the stigmas related to men’s issues, there is still a long way to go. He says funding is still a priority, followed by the availability of sustainable healthcare systems focusing on men. Gsell says LDR is one of the few successful initiatives they have supported. Gsell appeals to people to consider donating towards Project Peacock and help a man live longer. Abrahams was diagnosed with prostate cancer at the beginning of the year and received LDR. He says he had a good experience with it. As a pensioner, Abrahams did not have to pay for the treatment and is grateful to those who donated money and made his journey a smooth ride. “I usually went for testing every year. I happened to skip one year (2018) and to my shock, I tested positive this year. I was so scared, I did not have much knowledge about the availability of treatment. But when I found out I did not have to go far to get the help, I was so relieved,” says Abrahams. He says because his family is genetically prone to prostate cancer, it was not difficult for him to talk about it and seek help. BEACH SAFETY
Adopt a water safety mindset F
or most Capetonians, summer holidays are all about the sun and the sea. But there is another word starting with an “s” that should be at the top of everyone’s list: safety. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urges the public to adopt a water safety mindset around coastal and inland waters this festive season. Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for Sea Rescue, says the number one rule for a safe experience at the beach, is to choose a beach that has lifeguards on duty and to swim between their flags. “If you do that, you don’t need to worry about rip currents, or suddenly getting out
of your depth. Putting an arm in the air and waving for help will get a rapid response from the lifeguards on duty,” Lambinon says. For various reasons, people regularly swim where there are no lifeguards on duty. This is when things can go wrong. “In a typical scenario, Sea Rescue gets an emergency call for a swimmer in difficulty. When we get there, we find two or more people in danger of drowning. Tragically, sometimes we are not able to get there in time and someone drowns,” he says. Lambinon says the person who does not survive is often the one who went into the water to help the person in difficulty.
“Sea Rescue launched our Pink Rescue Buoy project in November 2017. These bright pink rescue buoys are hung on strategically placed signs. If there is an incident and someone needs help these buoys can be thrown to the person in trouble in the water,” he says. The emergency number for the closest Sea Rescue station is printed on these signs. Lambinon says the safest thing to do is to call Sea Rescue if they see someone in trouble. “If anyone decides, against advice, to enter the water to try to rescue someone first call Sea Rescue and then use the rescue buoy to provide flotation for the
casualty.” Have a plan in place in the event of an emergency: . Make sure you have emergency numbers saved on your cellphone. In an emergency, dial 112 from any cellphone. Or Google Sea Rescue or NSRI for the closest Sea Rescue station’s telephone number. . Check the wind, weather and tides before going to the beach, fishing or boating. . Tell someone where you are going and when you are due back, and make sure that they know your route, your intentions and who to call if you don’t return on time. . When climbing on rocks or fishing from rocks, never turn your back on the sea. Rock anglers must wear a life jacket and know when spring high tide is. . If you are paddling or if you are on a boat, before you launch, download NSRI’s free SafeTrx app – http://www.nsri.org.za/ safetrx.

The Strandfontein National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) duty crew was activated on Sunday 10 November at 13:22 following reports of a drowning in progress at Fishermans Walk, west of Strandfontein Pavilion. The sea rescue craft GrandWest CSI and Film Industry Fund Rescuer One was launched to search in the surfline. NSRI rescue swimmers, City of Cape Town lifeguards, City law enforcement, provincial government health emergency
medical service rescue squad, Cape Town fire and rescue services, the fire dive unit and City traffic services responded. A search commenced for a 15-year-old Belhar boy, who reportedly went missing in the surf while swimming. NSRI rescue swimmers and City lifeguards conducted sweeping line free dive search efforts in the surfline. Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, the teenager could not be located.
Students graduate with skills The students that attended the skills programme at the Cape Flats Development Association (Cafda) centre in Philippi graduated on Friday 8 November. Cafda provides much-needed support to individuals from less privileged backgrounds. “Cafda provides opportunities to people to gain qualifications that can allow them to earn a living. “For a couple of years now, Muslim Hands in Rylands Estate, Athlone, has been sponsoring individuals to gain skills training and development with Cafda. This year, Muslim Hands provided full sponsorships to 40 students, who attained qualifications in plumbing, electrical and welding,” says Aisha Adam, spokesperson for Muslim Hands. On Friday, the students graduated, attaining qualifications that can change their
lives. The training provides them with a means to start afresh, get employed, earn a living, and support their families. They all thanked the organisation for making this possible. Sheikh Haashim Peck, programmes manager for Muslim Hands, said they are happy to be part of the project. “It gives a sense of satisfaction to know that Muslim Hands has an involvement towards the development of individuals who want to make a positive difference for themselves,” he says. Dignitaries present at the event included president and first deputy president of the MJC, Sheikh Erefaan Abrahams and Moulana Abdul Khaliq Allie. Taj Aklekar, senior board member of Cafda was also present and thanked Muslim Hands for reaching out to the students and choosing Cafda as a partner.

Millions raised for Sunflower Fund M
ore than 130 000 TOPEs were sold at Pick n Pay during the 2019 Sunflower Day campaign, raising R3.9 million to help fight blood diseases like leukaemia through the recruitment of stemcell donors. The retailer was the first to join forces with the Sunflower Fund 16 years ago – for what was then known as Bandana Day – to help increase the number of critically needed donors on the registry, especially in South Africa. Every year TOPEs are sold in
stores, culminating in Sunflower Day on 20 September, to raise awareness and funding for the Sunflower Fund. “This year’s contribution of just under R4 million is testament to the difference each one of us can make. The fact that the sale of one little item like this can generate something of this magnitude is incredible. We’d like to thank every customer, school and corporate who joined to help make 2019 Sunflower Day the success it was. It

The 41-year-old former South African international has played at one Junior World Championship, three senior World Championships, one Commonwealth Games and has toured overseas on 11 different occasions. Molaba is renowned for his winning run in the 2000 World Series in East London. But now, even as his energy has shifted mostly to coaching, Molaba could be set to add another golden moment. “By accepting the invitation, we will continue to strengthen the relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles and the Sweden Softball Federation,” he said. Locally, Molaba coaches the Eagles Men Thuto Makolomakoe, Terence White and Moses side and the Falcons Molaba.
T
he relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles Softball Club and the Swedish Softball Association took another positive turn recently. Moses Molaba, Thuto Makolomakoe and Terence White were guest players for Sweden in the European Masters Softball Cup played in Barcelona, Spain. They were invited by their local Swedish player, Karl Heljm, who plays for Eagles as part of an agreement between the two organisations. The men’s edition of this tournament consisted of eight teams from six different countries. For the round-robin phase, the teams played in two groups. Denmark All Stars and Magos Tenerife remained undefeated in their group, thus securing the first two spots in the winners’ group. Runners up, with both one loss and two wins, were the Israel Stars and Capitalinos Gran Canaria. Magos Tenerife remained the only undefeated team throughout the event and deserved the title. “The experience of playing in this event was great,” said Molaba who has vast experience in the international softball scene.
