WETTON
‘Mars generation’ inspired LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
A
former Nasa astronaut visited Christel House South Africa in Wetton on Friday 13 September. Dr Don Thomas shared his experiences and interacted with the learners. He is a veteran of 692 space orbits of the earth, and his tour in Cape Town was aimed at inspiring a ‘Mars Generation’. The astronaut’s visit to the school was made possible through The Amdec Group. Shannon Mark, corporate social investment (CSI) manager of Amdec, said they were glad to be part of the space tour. “We like to build communities and focus on sports and academics to develop the youth,” he said. Mark said it was important for the company to emphasise mathematics and science to develop the next scientist, mathematician and maybe astronaut. He said Amdec wanted to reward the learners for their hard work by allowing them to meet Thomas. Noni Adams, a Grade 10 learner and aspiring astrophysicist, was the emcee at the event. Adams said he hopes to be one of the greats like Albert Einstein and leave as big a mark as the greats did. The Manenberg resident said one day he hopes to make a difference in his community and maybe that could be possible. “I am only one person so maybe if a few people come together, we could make a difference,” he said. Adams said, on Friday he had the opportunity to meet an astronaut from Nasa. “I am very excited to meet a real-life astronaut,” he said. Adams hopes to study stellar physics and interstellar phenomena, the galaxy and the black hole formation at Stellenbosch University after school. He said the popular show, The Big Bang Theory with Sheldon Cooper piqued his interested in string theory. Thomas told the learners how he got to where he is today. He was rejected thrice before Nasa accepted him and he was 39 when he made it to space. He urged the learners to be patient. “I knew it was going to be difficult because there were thousands of people applying,” he said. Thomas encouraged the learners to work hard and do their best every day. “I had a dream and a burning desire, and nothing was going to stop me,” he said. Thomas encouraged the learners to never give up and always work in school and work towards their goals. “We call upon you, the Mars Generation, to set foot on Mars. We need you to develop your skills. We need scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and mathematicians,” Thomas concluded.
Sohail Abrahams, from Wetton, asked Dr Don Thomas a question during the question and answer session.

hen her children left school 33 years ago, she decided to be of service to her community and fellow man. Since the 1980s Margaret Voogt (83) from Blomtuin, Bellville, has dedicated her whole life to serving her fellow man and community – and is still doing it. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers. “I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger

visited her at home. She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do. “I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries. “Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect secondhand clothing and every three months we have a sale. My team and I usually stored the clothing in boxes at the hospital, but a storeroom was cleaned and we use that space as our storeroom,” Margaret said. She visits Karl Bremer every Thursday and all the clothes that are not sold are handed over to Patricia Groenewald of Avondale, to hand out where there is a need. “We sometimes get knitted squares and use that to make blankets for the rape centre at Karl Bremer hospital. The past 20 years I am a volunteer catering coordinator at the Bellville East Reformed Church for the nongovernmental organisation, Koningskinders. This is a group of underprivileged kids that we take on a camping trip every term. “The kids are from Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and the principal se-
lects who attends the camps. The camp is over five days and is held at the Melkbosstrand Cultural Centre and matrics or college students are the group leaders. Each group leader has three children to take care of for the duration of the camp and the camp has a Christian theme,” she said. The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community. At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day. “I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled. Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild. V The winners of the awards will be announced at a morning tea on 12 October in Cape Town. Winners and runners-up will walk away Shoprite vouchers and other prizes sponsored by TygerBurger, People’s Post, City Vision, and Spec-Savers.

GRASSY PARK
Initiative unites local crafters LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
R
esidents from Grassy Park have established a Craft Route where like-minded people have come together to make a difference. Robin Oakes, chairperson of the Craft Route, said the organisation is made up of
a group of multi-skilled people. The Craft Route falls under the community’s Think Tank initiative. The route consists of a powerful meeting of local craft leaders, craft facilitators, professional crafters, community historians and heritage activists. The Think Tank allows the community to come together and think about macro endeav-
ours that develop other ideas like the Craft Route. Members have pledged themselves to develop the route within the Grassy Park community to its full potential. Amanda Lopes, one of the representatives who also owned a craft store for many years, said the aim is to create a programme for crafters in the area. “We are trying to get people in the community together,” she said. Lopes said there are about 20 people who are part of the crafters. She said they need more crafters because their work does not get the exposure it deserves. “We want to show people our culture and heritage,” she said. The crafters come from Cafda, Grassy Park, Zeekoevlei, Lotus River, Phumlani, Parkwood Estate, Montague Estate, Schaapkraal, Pelican Park, other surrounding areas and have 20 years of experience. Oakes said the crafters are facilitators, they host workshops and are social activists. He said the organisation was es-
tablished two years ago and aims to uncover and promote local heritage. “Through the craft, we want to look at the local development and give ownership to people,” he said. Oakes said the organisation wants to create a space in the community where people can buy crafts. “Whether it’s someone making something in the backyard or at home, the route wants to give them exposure and show the community their talents and quality work,” he said. Oakes said their aim is to create a market from home. “We want to change the thinking about what quality is,” he said. “Most importantly, we want to create craft markets that reflect our heritage and educate the community and the children within the community.” “We want to re-introduce the spending power by looking at our neighbours and see how we can help each other,” said Oakes. The Craft Route is open to all crafters, artists, poets and story-tellers and the intention is to expand into other areas.

BMX track gives hope to residents LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
T
he Princessvlei Eco Centre, in Elfindale is offering the public access to its BMX bicycles and track. This is a wonderful activity for children, especially during school holidays. The Pedal Power Association recently donated a few bicycles to the Princessvlei Eco Centre. Jannis Jagger, the project manager of the organisation, said the Pedal Power Association donated 10 bikes to the centre earlier
this year just before the June holidays. The association, situated in Kenilworth, promotes cycling, the interests of cyclists and supports cycling-based community projects. Furthermore, it lobbies for the interests of cyclists’ safety and rights, assists communities to develop through cycling and encourages the youth to cycle. Jagger said the BMX bicycles and track is especially great for children during the school holidays. The association operates all over the Western Cape and has also funded a group

from Khayelitsha, Khaltsha Cycles, to make use of the BMX track. Khaltsha Cycles aims to inspire and create cycling townships by enabling people to transform their lives and their communities through bicycling. “We gave them an opportunity to ride on the track.” The Strandfontein resident said the organisation did this because these children do not always have the opportunity to do this activity, or even have access to bicycles. “This has definitely made a difference,” says Jagger. She says before they did not get the opportu-
nity to ride bicycles. “Some children have also started cycling themselves,” she said. Jagger said this makes the association feel really good because it is what they do. Residents can visit the Princessvlei Eco Centre and choose a top-of-the-range Avalanche BMX and helmet and take to the BMX tracks for the day. Residents can also come in groups. The Princessvlei Eco Centre is open from Mondays to Saturdays from 14:00 to 16:00 and Sundays from 09:30 to 12:00 V For more information phone the Princessvlei Eco Centre on 021 400 6128.

eople do not need to go to the beach when they want to relax, they can sit under the trees and breathe in the same fresh air. These were the words of Adriaan Gradwell, principal of Mary Harding School, during a tree planting ceremony held at the school on Wednesday 18 September. The event, which was also attended by the executive mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato,
was part of the mayoral activities undertaken during Arbor Month. During September, Plato and members of the City’s department of recreation and parks have embarked on a series of tree planting activities across the City. Their aim is to plant more than 1000 indigenous trees and plants across the city during Arbor Month. One of the sites identified by the City was Mary Harding School in Athlone. The school takes care of learners from Grade R to Grade

Gradwell thanked the City for choosing their school and described the donation of trees as a “wonderful gesture.” “This is brilliant of the mayor to come to a school in a community such as Athlone and plant some trees, because in most cases we are neglected when it comes to things like this (recreational activities),” he said. He expressed events such as this one tend to be held in more affluent areas. He said the event also encourages the learners to take care of the environment . He also thanked the mayor’s office for getting the learners involved. Some of the learners travelled with the mayor to the City’s nursery in Newlands to choose and fetch the trees that were later planted at the school. learners from South Peninsula High School (Diep River), Belgravia High School (Athlone), Islamia College (Lansdowne), Athlone High School, Rylands High School (Gatesville), The Leadership College (Manenberg), and Rustenburg Girls High School (Rondebosch). This exhibition follows a series of workshops by Lauren Theunissen, a lecturer at the school of photography, in July. Learners were taught the basic use of a smartphone to take a story-telling photograph and identify when a photo is in focus. The exhibition will take place at Orms on Friday 27 September.
Chanel Fredericks, the museum’s outreach programme manager, says the project allows learners to share their childhood experiences and more. Maahir Davids, a Grade 11 learner at Islamia, took a variety of photographs and says the project helped improve his skills, and gave him reassurance of his passion for photography. “I am looking forward to the exhibition. It is an opportunity to showcase what we have learned,” Maahir says. The project was established last year to celebrate childhood and education. Gas extraction project in full swing T
he landfill gas flaring project at the Coastal Park landfill facility in Muizenberg has been firing on all cylinders since it was launched about 18 months ago. This project is aimed at destroying methane gas that is produced by the landfill, and converting this to less harmful carbon dioxide and energy. To date methane, equivalent to about 138 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, has been destroyed at the landfill. World Ozone Day was commemorated on Monday 16 September and it was a time to once again do a health check on the ozone layer, its depletion and what can be done differently to further protect it. The ozone layer acts as an invisible shield and protects people from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun “Methane gas, which is present in the landfill, has a global warming potential approximately 25 times greater than carbon dioxide. Not only does this offset carbon emissions, but gas that is converted to energy can be used to fuel a variety of operations,” said Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg. She said the City is committed to reducing its carbon footprint from municipal infra-
structure and services, by rolling out this project at other City landfill sites in 18-months’ time. Methane is a highly combustible gas that can be collected and used as a heating fuel, to generate electricity or as a fuel for vehicles. The gas extraction and flaring systems have been established at Coastal Park and Bellville South landfills, and a similar system will be constructed at the Vissershok South landfill. The Coastal Park landfill gas Phase 2 of the landfill gas flaring project in underway. extraction project has yielded a number of successes since its inception: been established which is used to generate . countries to implement approved carbon offsetting projects, which developed countries may invest in by purchasing “carbon credits”. The City has now initiated the tender process to realise phase 2 of the project where the infrastructure will be extended to the other landfills. “The destruction of this greenhouse gas, which is a major contributor to global warming, assists not only the City but contributes to national climate change mitigation goals,” said Limberg. Methane gas in landfills is created when organic matter decomposes. Therefore, the City is working to reduce volumes of organic waste sent to landfill sites through a number of programmes, including the Home Composting container rollout, which encourages residents to make use of organic waste for their green spaces. Magic show to cast an enchanting spell NETTALIE VILJOEN
S
ay the word “magician” and the image of a man in a black suit, waving a wand around, immediately pops into your head.
This is the stereotype that Rondebosch resident Santika Naidoo (21), a graduate of the College of Magic and a member of its voluntary teaching staff, wants to change. “Too many girls grow up thinking the only

avenue open to them in the magic and illusion industry is that of the ambiguous temptress, standing on the side. But they don’t want to be the one just holding the props or even being the prop. So they begin to believe magic isn’t for girls.” Naidoo, director of the college’s latest production World of Magic!, is living proof that nothing is further from the truth. The full-time Arts in Film and Television, Psychology and Organisational Psychology student is in her final year at the University of Cape Town. She says her participation in the college’s six-year training programme played a huge role in her decision to pursue a career in entertainment. “The college offers a range of courses. One of them is theatre production which focuses more on the technical side, for example, editing and lighting. My training taught me so many skills and it opened my eyes to the opportunities in the industry.” She says the understanding of how to create a guided and immersive experience is one of the greatest lessons taught at the college. “Modern technology and social media have caused us as a society to become distant from one another. But people still crave that feeling of being connected, of being immersed in the moment. With the knowledge I’ve gained, I hope to create that holistic experience for audiences.” So, for her, the reward for heading up this new show as its director is twofold. Besides crafting a magical journey for audiences,
she also has the chance to transform the roles of women in the male-dominated magic industry. “We specialise in making the impossible possible at the College of Magic. Having spent years training under the tutelage of strong female magicians, I relished the opportunity to help our young girls find their own voice and performance styles.” The show’s diverse cast features some of the Mother City’s exceptional entertainers, illusionists, clowns and jugglers, all between the ages of 10 and 19. It promises to whisk the audience through a fantastical world filled with illusions, magic, hilarious antics and fun-filled fantasy. When Naidoo and her then codirector, Michelle Gore, were given the task to put together the production at the beginning of the year, they decided to recreate that sense of childlike wonder. Gore withdrew from the project in August to pursue her PhD studies in atmospheric sciences at the Tenn State University in the United States of America (USA). “By taking the audience on a journey through the different worlds of magic, the show reminds you what it felt like when everything was still new and exciting; when your desire to explore was bigger than the fear of the unknown,” says Naidoo. Catch the show at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 6 October at 14:00 and 16:30. Tickets are R165 with discounts for family bookings available. Book at Computicket. Shannon Mowday, a celebrated jazz soloist and composer, masterfully blends sounds of Africa and Scandinavia in her production, Lila, for one night only at Jazz at the Nassau. The Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Jazz (2007), has united musicians with whom she has worked since moving to Norway in 2009, each with a very unique musical identity. The production’s musicians include Mowday (soprano, alto, baritone and bass saxes, bass and contra-alto clarinet, composition), Helge Lien (piano), Johannes Eick (six-string acoustic bass), Erik Nylander (drums) and Asle Karstad (sound design). Supported by Norway Music, Lila had its debut performance on the Oslo Jazz Festival this year, followed by performances in Norway and South Africa. Through the art of spontaneous “play”, the musicians seek to find both common ground in expression and also explore beyond borders of musical genres or expectations of style.
Mowday’s playing is a combination of power and high energy juxtaposed with sensitivity. Her unique compositions reflect her travels, her South African roots and extensive musical experience; drawing from nature, folklore, life experience and also presenting important issues for social discourse. Internationally acclaimed Lien, known for his distinctive sound, is one of the most exciting young voices to come out of the Scandinavian music scene. Eick’s unique expression and sound, playing six-string upright bass, is unparalleled. He has been an essential part of the Norwegian improvised music scene. Nylander has also worked in African projects such as Monoswezi and Mote (with Mowday and Dizu Plaatjies). Catch Lila on Sunday 29 September at 19:30 at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School, Palmyra Road, Newlands, Cape Town. Tickets cost R150 each. Students pay R50. V Call 076 401 0008 to book tickets. This year Garden Day will be celebrated on Sunday 20 October. CPUT ladies’ soccer team entertained the crowd with scintillating football displays during a nail-biting final against UWC, which the hosts won 1-0.
UCT triumphant in intervarsity tournament H
undreds of students braved the weekend’s inclement weather to attend the exciting, annual Western Cape Intervarsity games hosted by Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) at their Bellville Campus. The tournament saw CPUT, the University of Western Cape (UWC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (US) and Varsity College putting each other through their paces in sports such as soccer, basketball, water polo, table tennis, badmin-
ton, fencing, ultimate frisbee and tennis. The chilly and rainy weather disrupted outdoor codes such as cricket, netball, beach volleyball and tennis. Last year’s overall champions, US, relinquished their title to this year’s champions, UCT, who won the event, scoring 50 points. Stellenbosch was second with 45 points and UWC came third with 30 points. CPUT, which dominated soccer as both their men’s and ladies’ teams won the finals, came fourth with 26 points and Varsity Col-
lege was fifth with 13 points. The tournament started in 2016 and was held at UWC, while CPUT hosted it for the first time this year. CPUT sports and culture manager, Siyabulela Mkwalo said: “I am very excited with what we achieved today despite the bad weather. We are disappointed that we had to cancel some sporting codes. Overall, I am happy we have achieved the strategic objectives of the event which was to create a platform for the students to have fun and enjoy-
ment. The best team won, although the tournament was not about winning but participation,” said Mkwalo. CPUT men’s soccer team captain, Bongumusa Mbali, said winning the soccer section of the tournament can open doors for them and hopes that the CPUT management will increase their support for the team. “I’m very grateful for the guys that played and those who didn’t play for the support we got both from the CPUT team and other teams,” said Bongumusa.

Forces join hands to showcase local talent T
wo local youth football fraternities joined forces to showcase local talent in Mitchell’s Plain during the Golden United Tournament. The tournament was held in collaboration with the MRP Foundation High Schools Soccer League, which is largely considered to be the flagship of schools football in South Africa, in Rocklands on 7 September. Golden United chairperson, Sowyba Jones felt that soccer has been monopolised for far too long with public facilities being the bargaining chip to keep clubs and school sports such as the MRP Foundation apart. She felt that all junior sports and senior sports should and must be cohesive for the development of soccer in Mitchell’s Plain. MRP Foundation High Schools Soccer League chair, Shamiel Kolbee echoed these
sentiments stating football was the overall winner of the day and applauded Golden United’s executive for having displayed vision and that the tournament is an example of what is possible if all work together. He also hopes that this is an eye-opener for club soccer and school soccer to join hands. It showed that the league is very much part of Mitchell’s Plain and not an entity intent on only playing for themselves, as was perpetuated by the custodians of soccer in Mitchell’s Plain. MRP Foundation’s High Schools Soccer League secretary, Li-Anne Mervyn says: “In communities such as Mitchell’s Plain where our youth remains trapped in a poverty cycle of crime, drugs, gangsterism and unacceptably high level of school drop-outs, it is important that we offer them something to
aspire to, to keep our youth motivated, focused and on track at a time when the general morale of our communities is at an alltime low.” She adds it is important that they demonstrate leadership and create unity through action to help bring meaningful change, which is the aim of the tournament going forward. It was the first time in Mitchell’s Plain that the 16 participating high schools, in what is commonly referred to as the “Mr Price League”, played their matches as a curtain-raiser to the Golden United Tournament. “This demonstrates that clubs and schools can collectively work together to promote the beautiful game and coach a flourishing relationship that has been conspicuously lacking in football in Mitchell’s
Plain for many years,” adds Mervyn. Mervyn was excited and amazed at the very same time at the number of parents, spectators, players that came out in their droves to support sport. “It only proved that the love of the game still exists within Mitchell’s Plain. The socalled leaders of soccer within Mitchell’s Plain has been instrumental in denying our youth of interacting with each other, by perpetuating false truths about the league to the clubs within Mitchell’s Plain. By playing side-by-side at the tournament, Golden United and MRP Foundation Schools League has shown the soccer fraternity that they have seen through the lies and will help build a better and stronger soccer fraternity of unity for our boys. We all need to save the futures of our children!”

Athletes enjoy fast, flat, fun race RASHIED ISAACS
M
SA Multisport held their third annual league race on Sunday 22 September through the streets of Kenwyn and Wynberg. The race is labelled as “triple F” – fast, flat and fun. The race catered for distances of 5km and 10km. Just over 1 500 participants were blessed with cool weather; with Raydon Balie (30:34) of Eerste River and Langa’s Pamela Moyikwa (39:02) using it to their advantage to beat a top field of runners in the open categories.
The Langa club have been consistently sharing the podium of late with the most noticeable addition to the club being Fortunate Chidzivo who smashed the Cape Town marathon 10km course record last week, Sunday 15 September. The MSA race is a start of a series of races lined up for this week on the Western Province Athletics calendar with the Nantes Athletics Club poised to host their annual race on Tuesday 24 September, and Goodwood Harriers ending off a festival of running on Saturday 27 September. Here are a few snaps from Sunday’s race in Wynberg.
