Lighting up the festive season A scene captured during the annual Festive Lights Switch On event at Grand Parade on Sunday 1 December. The event hosted by the City of Cape Town officially marks the beginning of the festive season in the city, allowing families to have a fun time out. It attracts thousands of Capetonians, young and old – enjoying lots of free, live entertainment; video mapping; food and drinks; and even a laser show.

lderly residents were celebrated in Seawinds on Tuesday 26 November at an annual event hosted by Gerry Gordon, councillor for ward 67. Despite the festive atmosphere, the occurrence of elder abuse in the greater Retreat area was addressed. Guests were handpicked from informal settlements in Hillview, Overcome Heights and Village Heights as well as from seniors’ clubs in Pelican Park, Zeekoevlei and Sea-

winds. They were entertained with live music and treated to drinks and eats. With the event falling within the 16 Days of Activism, Gordon said seniors should not keep quiet about the abuse. “I have very high regard for the seniors because they are the most experienced people on this Earth. 16 Days of Activism against women and children – the abuse that happens – you are not immune or excluded from it,” she said. “I do know that many of you suffer abuse in your own homes. The fact that someone
screams at you – that’s abuse. Be the example and put your foot down.” Residents confirmed that elderly abuse happens daily. “You have sons shouting, screaming and abusing their parents for money, for drugs,” said one resident. She said the problem in Seawinds is the lack of facilities and activities to keep people from using drugs. Speaking from personal experience, she told People’s Post how she was forced to have her children jailed to rehabilitate them. Another resident added the established rehabilitation centres do not have active sup-

port systems or groups in their communities. This presents a problem for addicts because they do not usually have the money to travel to seek support. “We can’t give them taxi money – they’ll take it straight to buy drugs,” she said. Another resident said the extent of the abuse experienced by elders ranges from verbal to physical and even sexual. Seawinds residents are calling on the City to take note of their needs for parks with security guards, sports fields and programmes to empower the youth before they become just another crime statistic.

Seasonal firefighters put through their paces T
he 119 seasonal firefighters recruited for 2019/20 have started their four-week wildland firefighting training course and are set to be deployed this month. The City of Cape Town’s latest batch of recruits is being put through their paces at the training ahead of being deployed in teams to various fire stations around the metropole to assist with the combatting of vegetation fires over the warmer months. The training course started on Monday 11 November with induction and orientation, and the issuing of personal protective equipment. All staff will undergo four weeks of theoretical, practical and physical training. The curriculum’s theoretical content covers everything from City protocols to fire behaviour and weather conditions, firefighter safety and survival, the tools required for the job and fire suppression methods, among others. “This is the final hurdle for our seasonals. They’ve already gone through a lot to get to this point, and I encourage them to remain focused on the training at hand, so that they are able to realise their goal of being on the frontline.” Smith extended a special word of thanks to the fire and rescue service staff who devote themselves to this programme each year, not only in the interest of public safety, but also for the development of potential future firefighters.
Building better relationships is key AVRIL FILLIES The safety of the residents of Lansdowne and a better relationship between the police and the community is the goal of WO Gregory Grey, a police member of the detective services at the Lansdowne police station. He recently received the Operational Employee of the Year Award at the Western Cape Prestige Awards in Century City. “Winning the award encourages me to do better every year and to remain committed and dedicated to my work. The award also motivates me to work closer with street committees, neighbourhood watches and private security companies in order to make Lansdowne a safer place for the community,” he says. This is not the first time that Grey received an award for services rendered in the police force. Seven years ago he also received a prestigious award. “I am in the police force for 28 years and received my basic training in 1992 at the
Oudtshoorn Police College. I started my career at the Mitchell’s Plain crime prevention unit and then proceeded to Strandfontein police station where I worked in the Vispol environment. “From there I went to the flying squad in Maitland. “I later worked at the child protection unit, now known as the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Investigations (FCS) unit,” he says. Grey also worked at provincial intelligence and the Maitland detective services. When he is not on duty, he is an avid watcher of sports and plays chess at club level. “My message to the community is that they must feel safe, be able to contact the police an any time if and when they need assistance, information or reporting a crime. “Over the festive season I have a busy schedule and plans to conduct regular tracing operations in search of wanted suspects,” Grey adds.
WO Gregory Grey (left) is congratulated by Col Shawn van Wyk, Lansdowne station commander.

The 24 men arrested in connection with suspected abalone poaching.
Robben Island ‘poachers’ nabbed In a bid to curb illegal abalone poaching in the province, police in partnership with the national department of forestry and fishery officers acted on information received about possible abalone poaching at Robben Island on Tuesday 19 November at 02:00. While patrolling the surrounding waters, the officers spotted a number of boats that sped off when they noticed police. The divers were, however, left behind in
the sea. Under the backings of operation Phakisa, various police role-players were activated to assist for the search of suspected poachers which resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects for transgressing the Marine Living Resource Act. No abalone was, however, found in their possession. Meanwhile, officers acted on information about more people still hiding on the island and that vessels were preparing to
fetch the poachers from the island. The officers conducted a further search at Robben Island Murray’s Bay and arrested seven suspects found hiding between the rocks outside of the harbour wall dressed in diving gear. Eight diving kits were confiscated. The 24 suspects aged between 21 and 50 are from Grassy Park, Hout Bay, Hermanus and Kleinmond.

bout 60 schools are set to compete in the Western Cape Provincial Marching Federation’s annual regional competition on Saturday 7 December at Athlone Stadium. Spectators, parents and residents from across the Cape are encouraged to attend and support the youth. The schools and community teams usually hail from in and around Cape Town but this year the federation expanded its reach to instil the values of discipline and accountability in more children. Previously there were only 34 teams competing. “We’ve gone now into the rural areas also – Bredasdorp, the Karoo, Overberg, West Coast, Worcester and so on. Now during this annual competition, we bring all the schools to compete,” said Roy Prinsloo, an executive member of the federation. The children will compete in several categories to find the best high school, primary school and community teams. Roy explained: “There’s the grand march pass, which must be regimented like the army does. So the judge will make sure every-

one is in unison; that everyone’s arms move and go up at the same time, for example. The next one we have is the drum major competition, where they find the best drum major who leads the team. “And then there’s best dressed; we inspect to see if they’re neat and clean and make sure no buttons are broken, and so on. The final category is the exhibition where each of the teams shows their unique team choreography.” Roy, along with Nick Smit, manage Fairmount Secondary School’s award-winning marching band. Smit said, despite the rapidly growing number of teams taking part in the sport, the main problem is still funding. While their school may have a partnership with Norwegian funders, who sponsor their learners’ fees and partially support the marching band, other teams do not have the same financial support and more is needed to assist the sport to grow. The federation calls on anyone who can provide help to support their local marching bands and to develop these children into accountable and responsible young people. Project to boost housing Engagements with residents throughout the greater Retreat area will soon yield 5 000 housing opportunities in the southern suburbs. Over the past two weeks, the Western Cape minister of human settlements, Tertius Simmers, held meetings with residents from wards 62, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 71 and 110. These include Plumstead, Ottery and Ottery East, Ferness, Parkwood, Vrygrond, Seawinds, Grassy Park, Lavender Hill, Steenberg, Retreat, Southfield and Cafda. Simmers said: “I commend the communities, their project steering committees (PSC’s), ward councillors, civic organisations and all other stakeholders for their robust and frank engagements.”
V To stand a chance to win a set of double movie tickets, email your name, surname and area to win@peoplespost.co.za.
He said the meetings helped to clearly explain the provincial government’s housing allocation criteria and how to ensure that those longest on the housing demand database will benefit first. “This mixed-development project, which includes Breaking New Ground (BNG), Community Residential Units (CRU), rental and social housing, open market and Finance Linked Individual Subsidy Programme (Flisp), has a budget of more than R1.5 billion. The project is currently in its planning phase, which includes various investigations and assessments,” he said. The projects are projected to commence in mid-2021 with the last key to be handed over in 2024.

Pothole repairs underway T
o show the residents of Hanover Park that the City of Cape Town is serious about bringing services to communities, mayor Dan Plato, rolled up his sleeves to help repair the potholes on the corner of Surran and Stonelands streets. He visited Hanover Park on Friday 22 November to help repair the potholes. The City’s roads department spent approximately R38 million in repairing 19 929 potholes during the 2018/19 financial year. In addition to pothole-fixing, R287 million is spent each year on resurfacing roads. Plato assisted in repairing the potholes with the City’s road repair staff. “Going into communities and demonstrating how important it is to bring services to communities is the City’s way of showing how focussed we are to bring services to them. “The campaign to repair potholes is part of a service delivery back-to-basics approach and to remind residents that the City is committed to ensuring that more people experience the benefit of efficient service delivery,” he says. The formation of potholes during the colder months is a common occurrence as it is linked to the heavy rainfall, age and state
of the roads. With warmer weather conditions on its way, City road repair teams can carry out repairs that are not quickly undone by more rain. They will also be carrying out general maintenance across the city to ensure that the roads that residents make use of every day are in a suitable condition to drive on and cycle on. Water is the main cause of potholes, but it can also form due to diesel spillage, vehicle collisions, fires, and inadequate road drainage. Mayco member for transport Felicity Purchase said: “This campaign is to emphasise the work done by the City’s roads team to ensure that the roads you use every day are kept in a good condition. The City is committed to quality service delivery for our residents. Please help us attend to potholes as soon as possible by reporting them to the City.” V Residents can report potholes to the transport information centre on 080 065 6463. This is a 24/7 information centre and is toll-free from a landline or a cellphone. Alternatively, an email can be sent to Transport.Info@capetown.gov.za. You can also send a WhatsApp to 063 407 3699, or contact the customer call centre on 0860 103 089.

Grade R’s learn about hygiene AVRIL FILLIES
W
hen she learned from teachers that kids stay out of school due to illness in Steenberg, Athlone, Hanover Park and Mitchell’s Plain, Chimnese Davids from Grassy Park decided to help teach learners about cleanliness during her school drives. “We started in August and taught the kids to keep their hands clean after break time and before they have their meals. By washing their hands, it can help lessen a child staying out of school due to stomach bugs,”
she says. Davids started her own NPO, Kreativ South Africa, in 2014 when she left the corporate world and a career in accounting to write and mentor others. “Kreativ SA is a personal initiative with the main aim to develop and enhance individual and community projects and publications, in order to build a healthy society. In collaboration with the perfume store MRL Private Collection in Schaapkraal, we’ve decided to do the school drives by implementing a hygiene project where we go out to dif-

ferent schools on the Cape Flats,” she says. The schools they’ve visited since August are: Sid G Rule Primary in Grassy Park, Sullivan Primary in Steenberg, Prince George Primary in Lavender Hill, Newfields Primary in Athlone, Voorspoed Primary in Hanover Park and West End Primary in Mitchell’s Plain. “We believe that giving back and teaching our little ones on health issues and how, by cleaning hands, less children will stay out of school and be present in school. Through the outreach it teaches one the values of life,
in how something that may seem small can help in greater measures. “We’ve visited over ten schools thus far, and we’ve only started with the Grade R’s in each school where there are between two to five classes. The total of learners in each class is between 30 tot 40 kids,” Davids says. According to Davids, she has seen during her school drives that public schools need help from communities. Davids has also published three books to encourage victims of child abuse to break the silence and to tell their own stories.

Safa CT pledges to ramp up safety EARL HAUPT @EarlHaupt
I
n the wake of the tragic events which saw a young player lose his life on a soccer field, Safa Cape Town (Safa CT) has pledged to increase its safety profile across the local football associations it administers. Saturday 5 October was a dark day for community football when Imtiyaaz Wagiet left home never to return again. Sadly, in a match between Bayview’s u.16 team and Strandfontein, Imtiyaaz collapsed on the field with no medical professional or qualified first aider. According to his coach at Bayview, Mark Rodrigues, he was then loaded into his parent’s car and taken to the nearby fire station. “People tried to resuscitate him. After 10 minutes they took the boy and put him in his parents’ car. They took him to the fire station. At the fire station, they tried their best to keep him alive. He was there for around 10 minutes, but he then passed on,” he says. Two years ago, People’s Post,
through their freelance sport photographer Rashied Isaacs, highlighted the dire need for health and safety personnel on community sports fields (“Safety no walk in the park”, 14 February 2017), but with the tragic events at Westridge Oval last month, Isaacs’ worst fears were realised. According to Isaacs, Wagiet’s death once again highlighted the need for thorough emergency planning for all sports and he is determined to bring about change at the different sporting venues, partnering with an accredited company to offer free first aid training for coaches as far back as 2014. Earlier this year, Isaacs refused to attend any more Safa CT events unless they addressed the apparent safety issues which saw Wagiet tragically lose his life. As a result, Safa CT president Bennett Bailey met with Isaacs to discuss his concerns and to pledge their commitment to the safer sports field project. Bailey then committed to introducing a holistic plan around safety for the 70 000 registered players in the 35 local football associations
(LFAs) he leads. “We have introduced, at a regional level, a constitutional clause where we refer to our medical officer, who is responsible for safety at our events. That we are going to bring and cascade to a local level, so that there is a pathway from local to provincial to national – that we all speak the same language,” Bailey said, adding that these policies now need to be enforced. “One of the things we are going to start with is to instruct all LFAs to appoint a medical officer in terms of the Safa regional and national constitution,” said Bailey. The new local football season starts in April next year, which is the time earmarked for changes to take effect. Bailey hopes that players and other informal associations follow Safa CT’s suit by placing more importance on safety. “It is like boxing where you cannot start the fight without a paramedic or an ambulance being onsite,” he says, adding that even third division clubs will be able to be trained up in first aid.
Fes ve
“We also want the referees to enforce it (safety standards) also, where if there is not a visible first aider present then that game should not start at all,” said Bailey. He adds this is one of the final pieces to Safa CT’s overall puzzle, whereby they seek to improve the level of performances of football players, which in turn will improve the standard of football being played locally. “Part of that process of identify-
ing talent is to get the right athletes – this is where the safety and our medical officer comes in terms of testing. When we test athletes we will look at all areas – the bio-kinetics, nutrition and all the areas necessary – for scientific support, but with it also, the athlete needs to be fit. We cannot send an athlete for provincial training at provincial teams if this person is not fit or healthy,” he said.
