e s o h t e t a in m o N elder heroes now Do you know elder superheroes who, despite their age and social circumstances, go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities? Nominate them now for a Community Champions Elders Award. Through the awards, now in its fourth year, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers, aim to honour those awesome elders who are making a profound difference in their communities. He, or she, could be the older, active neighbourhood watch patroller walking the streets at 04:00, feeding the children in their street, driving the sick to the clinic, knitting beanies and blankets for unwanted babies or giving free boxing lessons to keep the youth off the streets, all out of their own pockets. Tell us what wonderful deeds they’ve done for their community.

The academy has more than 110 children with 12 staff members. Children eligible to enrol at the academy are between the ages of one and five years old. The academy’s principal Aneeqah Moosa said the event was also aimed at allowing parents and teachers to catch up. She says this was the first major gathering of the year. She, however, expressed disappointment at the turnout of the parents. According to Moosa, the low turnout highlights the need for parents to be
more actively involved in the learning and the extra-mural activities of their children. Moosa said the event was also held to stress the importance of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) phase in the educational careers of children. She urged parents to go the extra mile in helping the teachers at the school and facilitate the building of their educational foundation. “We need parents to say, ‘We are here, what do you need?’,” she explained. Hopefuls line up for City enforcement vacancies P
assersby of the City’s Ndabeni Metro Police training facility this week would have been forgiven for thinking it was the location of an intense strongman competition as thousands of Capetonians were put through their paces. The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Training College started assessments for 12 335 candi-
dates last week, in the search of 120 candidates who will undertake the learnership programme for traffic service and Metro police vacancies. Since Monday 29 July, candidates have reported to the Ndabeni facility for a physical assessment – the first step in determining whether they will qualify for the job.
Candidates were subjected to a 2.4km run within 13 minutes for men and 15 minutes and 30 seconds for women, a reach test, push-ups, sit-ups and shuttle runs. “This physical assessment is not for the faint-hearted. We require that all of our operational staff have a level of physical capability to do the job, and anyone who fails to meet the requirements of the physical assessment is not allowed to proceed to the next phase,” said Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. He added: “It is also no walk in the park for the staff, who are assessing an average of 1 050 individuals a day, over a 12-day period. ‘The number of applications is astounding and speaks to the need for gainful employment. These jobs are no walk in the park, but I trust that there are candidates in the crowd of thousands who will one day wear
the uniform with pride and serve and protect their communities with distinction.” Once the physical assessments are completed, the candidates left standing will partake in a written assessment, followed by interviews. The successful candidates will move on to the 12-month traffic learnership, followed by a six-month municipal policing qualification at the Metro Police Training College in Observatory. “In the past six months, we have spoken often about increasing our enforcement footprint, particularly with the additional budget that has been made available to the Safety and Security Directorate. This recruitment process is directly linked to those announcements made. We will soon be celebrating the graduation of another batch of Metro Police and traffic officers, which will further increase our numbers on the ground,” added Smith.
FROM PAGE 1 Rayaan Cedras, one of the parents, shared advice on parenting. She said it was not wise for parents to only start showing an interest in their children’s’ lives once they became teenagers. She said it had to begin when they were younger. “Building a relationship with your children is at the root of parenting. Parenting is all about forming a connection,” she explained. According to Cedras, starting to build a relationship while one’s children are younger helps a parent to get to know their child better. “You cannot ask a 13-yearold ‘who are your friends?’,” she explained. She ended by asking where the parents were 13 years ago if they only started asking such questions now. Emphasising the importance of building a solid relationship with children was Ganief Kamish, who has a rehab centre called Tawakkul Rehab. Kamish urged parents to be open and honest when
they deal with their children – especially when they talk to them about drugs. “We need to tell them what taking drugs lead to and where it ends up,” he said. According to Kamish, each and everyone in the community was affected by drug addiction. They either had a family member or a friend who battled with addiction, or a drug addict who stole something from them or their relatives. He said it was the responsibility of parents to ensure that their children do not fall into the trap of taking drugs. “Monitor their behaviour. Be aware of who they chat to. Also, keep an eye on your medication because it can also be used as drugs,” she advised. Guests were also treated to entertainment in the form of multiple dance performances by a dance trio from Strandfontein. The trio is called Aphrodite Belly Dance Studio. They mesmerised the audience with their moves.

Christel House gets a boost for feeding campaign C
hristel House South Africa received R110 000 from KFC towards its feeding programme. The surprise donation was announced on the popular kykNET show Tussen Ons and will give a significant boost to the Otterybased school’s feeding programme. Christel House SA provides free scholarships to 750 children, from Grade R to 12, who come from 20 disadvantaged communities in the Cape Flats. In January, the school launched its Feed a Future campaign to raise funds for its feeding programme. The school’s chief executive officer (CEO) Adri Marais received a cheque of R110 000, in front of a live audience from KFC’s Add Hope ambassador Sinaziwe Ndlovu. According to Ndlovu, Add Hope started supporting Christel House in 2018 and as an ambassador, she wanted to show how grateful she was for the work Christel House did with young people in South Africa. The KFC’s Add Hope initiative combines its corporate social responsibility funds with contributions of R2 from its customers
to provide nutritious meals to more than 150 000 children around South Africa every year. “We know we have future leaders and future presidents who are going to come from Christel House. Because of that, we want to support and encourage the work that you do,” said Ndlovu. Christel House aims to break the cycle of poverty and build self-sufficient, contributing members of society through sound education, career-minded subject choices and long-term support of the student. As part of its holistic education model, the school provides each child with two nutritious meals and a snack daily at just R20. The school also boasts a 100% matric pass rate for the past 10 years and 96% of its graduates are either at tertiary education facilities or employed. Christel House is extremely thankful for KFC Add Hope for supporting its work with impoverished youth. The generous donation will ensure that its students receive the daily sustenance they need to grow and reach their potential.

Coffee culture come alive in Grassy Park A Grassy Park couple has established a space where residents from the community can come together. The family service station, located at Busy Corner, has been in the Jaffer family for almost 42 years. Mohamed Bray (37) and his wife, Ayesha Jaffer, took over the family business two years ago and realised there was no coffee shop in the area. The couple then opened a Vida e Caffè in Grassy Park. The 37-year-old said he reached out to the community and asked them whether the area needs a coffee shop. “Lots of people thought it would be nice to have a coffee offering in Grassy Park,” said Bray. He said people in the community have responded well and have shown their appreciation for the coffee shop. “This was the one luxury missing from Grassy Park.” Bray said they have also hired locals to
work in the store. “We have had matriculants work in the store, employed people from the community and have also supported community initiatives,” he explained. “A woman from Grassy Park has also launched her business from our store,” Bray continued. “Coffee culture has come alive in Grassy Park. Saturday and Sunday mornings joggers and cyclists come in and enjoy their coffee.” Bray said there is a certain stereotype that exists where you can’t be in Grassy Park, but suddenly on weekends, the shop is filled with people who are not from the community. Bray said this also created diversity in Grassy Park. “This is an uplifting, feel-good moment which we never thought would happen. We just wanted to give the community coffee and locals a place to come and chill.”

orld Ranger Day is observed annually on 31 July and commemorates rangers killed or injured in the line of duty. It celebrates the work rangers do to protect the world’s natural and cultural treasures. Rangers stand up to poachers almost daily as they battle to end the decimation of wildlife species, ranging from the poaching of rhino horn and abalone, to the illegal removal of plants such as cycads and Proteas. As part of World Rangers Day, South African National Parks (SANparks) Cape Region management and staff, with various stakeholders such as the South African Navy, Law Enforcement and CapeNature, hosted a World Ranger Day event at Mouille Point, Sea Point, on Wednesday 31 July. Whilst addressing the rangers and esteemed guests at the event, SANparks managing executive of parks, Property Mokoena, said: “Over the past few years, the Cape region has borne the brunt of poaching, muggings and a number of unfortunate incidents that have resulted in deaths, placing a greater burden on the field rangers working here.” He continued, saying it is their integrity and high moral ground that benefits citizens. “The work that you do today in preserving and conserving our country’s natural assets will not only ensure social benefits for the country but also economic assistance and opportunities for many years to come.” He said the organisation aims to address the challenges faced in the Cape region by appointing 120 tourism monitors who will be deployed into different functional areas, of which safety is one of the priorities. The programme is funded by the national Department of Tourism, and the monitors will be based in all Cape region parks, including Table Mountain National Park. “This programme is a great opportunity. We are proud to have them on board and foresee great results coming from this team in assisting us in making our national parks a safe and enjoyable destination for visitors,” he added. He expressed the need to collaborate on addressing these issues, adding: “Failure to address these challenges as a united front will undoubtedly affect the livelihoods of thousands of people depending on national parks for all sorts of benefits. “It is against this background that we think the solutions we need must be based on partnerships with stakeholders such as the police, navy, Law Enforcement, CapeNature, neighbourhood watch groups, private sector security companies and community outreach organisations such as Take Back our Mountain, and many more other significant role players,” he said. The first World Ranger Day was observed in 2007 and is the brainchild of the International Rangers Federation (IRF). World Ranger Day is promoted by the 63 member associations of the IRF; by the IRF partner; the Thin Green Line Foundation, and by individuals who support the work of rangers and the IRF. Giving back for Women’s Month W
omen’s Day in South Africa is dedicated to honouring women and the crucial role they play in society. This year Blue Route Mall in Tokai once again supports this important initiative with a campaign designed to give back to women and children in need. This August, Blue Route Mall will take action and stand up for women and vulnerable youth. In conjunction with the Blue Route Mall Trendsetters, the centre will initiate and mobilise a social responsibility awareness campaign to draw attention to the cause and to collect supplies for The Jones Safe House in Kommetjie. “A shelter for 15 abused women and children between the ages of five and 23, The Jones Safe House is a haven within the community – one doing incredible work for those in need, and one that deserves our support,” says marketing manager at Blue Route Mall, Bronwyn Rabie. The safe house is in desperate need of toiletries, stationery, educational toys, games, and puzzles. The mall encourages shoppers to donate items like these to the cause. She adds: “All contributions can be dropped off at the centre between 1 and 14 August. “All donations will be gratefully accepted and appreciated.” The mall will also lead an awareness activation at the centre on Women’s Day, Friday 9 August, from 12:00 to 14:00. With master of ceremonies (MC) Mashao Seabela on the mic and The Voice SA contestant, Keanu Harker, on vocals, the event promises loads of fun with live music, entertainment, fun activities, audience participation and giveaways.
Blue Route Mall Trendsetters are helping to give back to the women and children of the Jones Safe House in Kommetjie. Proceeds collected from Blue Route Mall’s Women’s Month campaign will be donated to the safe house. It will also be a great opportunity for shoppers to support The Jones Safe House initiative through donations. The campaign ends on 14 August. The mall will give all of the items donated by shoppers and collected by the Blue Route Trendsetters to the safe house in a formal handover at the end of August.
“Blue Route Mall and the Blue Route Mall Trendsetters look forward to being able to give back and support vulnerable women and children during Women’s Month. “We encourage our community of shoppers to do the same,” says Rabie. “If you would like to donate, visit the cen-
tre between 1 and 14 August to drop off your contribution in the box located on the first floor near the food court. “The more we can all work together to help each other, the brighter our country’s future will be,” she says. V For more information, call Blue Route Mall’s information centre on 021 713 2360.
Survey to determine if tourism will benefit community A survey to determine whether tourism will benefit the Mitchell’s Plain community is underway. A similar survey was previously held in Khayelitsha and, according to the findings, most residents were very positive about tourism and tourist routes being rolled out in the area. The organisation conducting the survey, ovatoyou, aims to conduct similar research in Langa, Grassy Park and Athlone. Amanda Reekie, ovatoyou’s founding director, said the survey intends to support the community in building a tourism offering and to include residents. “The detail of how this will
happen has not been determined,” she added. Reekie said the survey was about establishing whether tourism benefits communities through job creation. According to Reekie, the survey aimed to discover which sites within the community would appeal to tourists and what the possible barriers in the community were for tourism and tourists. She said although challenges had been identified in the survey in Khayelitsha, the overall response had been very positive. According to Reekie, once the information about the survey in the areas was collected, it would be used
to determine the attitude about tourism in the communities and the correct approach to take in the various areas. “If the decision to hold tourism workshops in the community is taken, the company will engage with the community.” As an incentive to complete the survey, Ovatoyou is offering R5 000 to be shared by five winners from each community surveyed. Up for grabs are a R2 000, two R1 000 and two R500 prizes. Winners will be chosen through a random draw. V To register, visit http://surveys.ovatoyou.co.za. Once registered, you will automatically get the community survey.

The new Princess Vlei jungle gym was completed on Thursday 18 July and forms part of the City’s efforts to rejuvenate the area and to create safe spaces that residents can use at their leisure. The play area for children cost the City more than R300 000 to complete, according to Southgate. “The whole idea is to develop this entire precinct and we’ve been doing it, bit by bit. We’ve put in braai areas and plants. So all the work that has been done here thus far has come out of my ward’s allocation budget. ‘Kinky Boots’ – brilliant, entertaining musical not to be missed The 2005 Tony award-winning Broadway musical, Kinky Boots, playing at The Fugard, is absolutely delightful entertainment. The musical scores get top marks in every department: the acting, singing, choreography, direction, the storyline and, most importantly, the way it challenges many of society’s long-held bigoted views on a range of issues. The lead character, Lorna/Simon, brilliantly played by Earl Gregory, holds the show together with his outstanding singing, choreography, brilliant acting and towering stage presence.
Rarely is one musical able to deal with so many contemporary issues of a sensitive nature whilst keeping you totally entertained. Kinky Boots does just that. Some of the issues covered in this fun-filled and vibrant musical are: saving small businesses out of compassion for the loyal staff, the nonsensical views about masculinity and that transvestites are as human as everyone else and have feelings that can be impugned as anyone else’s feelings can. Musicals like these do for society what society cannot for itself. That is to
challenge bigoted views but in an entertaining and subtle way. Kinky Boots is an absolute treat. Well done to the Fugard for hosting this brilliant musical and to the actors as well as the entire team that put this show together. We can be truly proud of the standard of theatre in this country. Don’t miss this brilliant musical. I might just go and see it again for its sheer entertainment and educational value. EV RAPITI, Kenwyn
The most expensive ‘poor’ country I wonder who the government is trying to fool? Last month the price of petrol came down, but electricity prices went sky high. The price came down just to get the attention away from the high electricity prices. Now, it’s a new month and, guess what,
the price of petrol is going up. Mark my word, it’s going to go up every month for the rest of the year. One of these days we will get junk status because of Eskom. The more money Eskom gets, the more it “needs” and we, the consumers, must just pay. It’s a rip-off.
Why must we pay for its mistakes every time? Why can’t it take the levy off the prices of petrol? Why can’t the government take away the water levy? South Africa is by far the most expensive “poor” country in the world. JASMINE UYS, Athlone

It is a sad story of a Ukrainian tourist killed by predator criminals on our tourist trails in, around and on our mountain and its slopes. We cannot hope that Cape Town is a tourist paradise, not with the crime statistics reported and heaven forbid also the non reported. This tells the world that we are a crime capital. The whole world is plauged by crime though. It is infectious and contagious because there are victims and valuables, and that to the criminal is finance. In plain English it is money gained illegally to make the world go round. Let me share my thoughts on this subject – keeping in mind my 30 years service as a operational commander in the South African Police in Table Bay Harbour – which included the world famous tourist meccas the V&A Waterfront and Robben Island. Firstly, the police cannot and will not be everywhere. Secondly, we must respect and acknowledge the security officer as a policeman as their presence prevents crime. Thirdly, respect also and acknowledge the car guard whose uniformed presence also prevents crime. They are all policing to prevent crime. But the most important policing partner in the fight against crime is you. Yes, you and I. we must become crime preventers in our homes, on the street and in our vehicles. We must do crime prevention strategies to protect ourselves and of course our families. I suggest that persons with security training and licenced firearms form tourist safety tours on and in our trails, forests and mountains to escort these tourists. KEITH BLAKE, Ottery
Luthando will be missed It was with much sadness that we learnt of the tragic death of 26-year-old petrol attendant Luthando Rangana, employed at the BP Aero Motors in Kenwyn for five years. Luthando was shot and killed in Khayelitsha on a Friday morning while accompanying a friend. Police are investigating, and no one has been arrested yet in connection with the fatal shooting. He once drove me home, saying how privileged he felt to drive a luxury German SUV. The Kenwyn Neighbourhood Watch have rallied to collect funds for transporting his body to the Eastern Cape for his funeral. The BP Aero Motors management and staff thanked their loyal customers for their overwhelming support towards Luthando’s family. He is survived by his ailing father and five-year-old son. Please contact me on markrh77@gmail.com should you wish to donate. MARK RH KLEINSCHMIDT, Kenwyn
Agreeing with getting rid of toy guns I have read the article (“Get rid of toy guns”, People’s Post, 23 July). I agree 100% with the comments. Last week, in China Town, I saw a person buying five of those guns with the red light and wondered what was he buying that for? We need to stop the shops now, not tomorrow. BRIAN LOTTERS, Grassy Park

THEATRE
Ever wanted to kill off a character in a show? A
nyone who has attended the National Arts Festival in the past decade should be familiar with the Butlers comedy series, which promises new and exciting material in Muizenberg. The shows have enjoyed huge popularity since first being performed in 2008, with thousands of people having seen the murdermystery plays where the audience gets to decide what happens next. For the first time yet, Slick ’n Sleeve is bringing their latest “whodunit” comedy production to the Masque Theatre. Butlers and Bombshells is the new instalment of the series. The Butlers team is thrilled to once again present patrons with a brand-new comedy where the audience’s participation has an impact on the storyline. The production shows audiences that an actor’s life can be murder! When a group of aspiring performers audition for a coveted role, dead bodies start piling up – because some people will do any-
thing to get a big break. It’s a murder-mystery with ingenious plot twists. Plus the audience gets to kill off characters during the show. So, if you have ever wanted to kill off one or two characters along the way, now’s your chance. Voting takes place by way of a narrator who gives choices to the viewer. Once a decision is made, the story heads in a particular direction. Anything can happen. Butlers and Bombshells is an exhilarating ride with crazy antics happening right up until the final scene. Murder-mystery theatre has never been this exciting and with multiple endings, who knows what’s going to happen? This thrilling, hair-raising play is to die for! V Tickets cost R100 and bookings can be made through Computicket or the Masque Theatre at bookings@masquetheatre.co.za or 021 788 1898.
Gina Beukes, known for her inimitable musical style and mastery of the violin and viola, will grace a Cape Town stage for the first time in two decades on 10 August. Beukes, currently the solo violist at opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Belgium, will treat Baxter Concert Hall audience members to a unique multi-media programme entitled: Chopin, a Lover, a War and an Astronaut. The one-night-only performance forms part of the Cape Town Concert Series in celebration of Women’s Day. She will be partnered by pianist Esthea Kruger. With works for violin and viola written by or inspired by women, Beukes will take the audience on a journey from the story of Chopin’s lover, George Sands, to the first woman to go into space; with storytelling and video projections to add to the music. Beukes, formerly concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and principal second violin of the London Philharmonic and violist in the London Symphony, graduated from the Juilliard with an MMus. Kruger, a prize-winning South African pianist, was awarded her doctorate from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in Germany. She was recently appointed to the teaching staff of the South African College of Music. The concert, which starts at 19:30, is dedicated to the memory of Huberte Rupert, the philanthropist whose generosity enabled many talented South African artists to become renowned performers.
Violinist Gina Beukes takes the audience on a journey through the story of Chopin’s lover, George Sands, to the first woman to go into space. The Rupert Music Foundation has also made it possible for chamber music to be performed on the Cape Town Concert Series’ recital platform. V Tickets range from R160 to R190 and are available from Webtickets http://bit.ly/CTCS12019 or the Baxter Theatre Centre Box Office on the night of the concert. Help Blisters to fight pollution T
he number of plastic water sachets to be handed out to walkers at this year’s Blisters for Bread will be substantially reduced. Instead, participants are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles which they can fill up at various mobile water trailers along the route. Petrina Pakoe, director of the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), says this is one of their contributions to a more environmentally friendly community. “PSFA is extremely concerned about the increase of plastic pollution and this is our small contribution towards a global movement to becoming a plastic-free society.” PSFA will also be partnering with Sasko and various private schools in the greater Cape Town area, where the learners at these schools will be encouraged to bring bread bags to school and place them in a special Sasko/Blisters for Bread
box for recycling. The participating schools will be rewarded with books which will in turn be donated to schools in PSFA’s feeding programme. Blisters for Bread, in association with Lucky Star, takes place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 25 August. Walkers can take part in one of two routes along the Sea Point Promenade – a 10km that starts at 07:30 and a 5km that starts at 08:00. Every person who enters will receive a medal. South Africa’s pop sensations Paxton and Jarrad Ricketts will be performing live at the finish line. The entry fee is R60 per person. Each entry helps PSFA feed 24 school children with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day. Enter online at www.psfa.org.za. V For enquiries, call Nuha at Top Events on 021 511 7130 or email info@topevents.co.za.
