MANENBERG

Fire victims need help SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

A

mysterious fire that broke out in the early hours of Sunday 1 September left three Manenberg families seriously affected. Two of the families lost almost all of their belongings, one also suffered physical injuries and all three were seriously traumatised. The fire reportedly started in a shack erected at the back of a house. It spread to another shack and destroyed an adjacent flat’s kitchen and bathroom. Fazlin Odendaal, a family member of one of the affected families, recounts the incident that morning. Odendaal says they were sitting in the lounge of the house, watching television and chatting while her brother-in -law’s children were sleeping in the shack. She says they did not smell anything until one of the children, a three-year-old boy, ran from the shack, shouting there was fire. “Had it not been for him, people would have died. He came running, saying, ‘Daddy, daddy, my sister is burning,’ ” she recalls. Two children, both younger than five, have burn wounds on their hands and faces and their father (32) still has a bandage around his head. The father, who did not want to be named, rushed to the shack to rescue his children and that is how he got burnt. He is still distraught and refuses to speak. He says he is not ready to speculate on what could have happened that morning. Odendaal says they do not know how they will rebuild the shack as none of them has jobs. “I do not even have a phone. I lost it in the fire. We lost everything. Even the electricity was affected,” says Odendaal. The City of Cape Town’s fire services doused the fire. Lecia Hartzenberg, whose flat is linked to the shack that burnt, says she lost all of her electric appliances. She thanks God that she is still alive. Also grateful to be alive are Aneeqah Fisher and Shakiena Davids. They live in the second shack that burnt. Fisher says the fire was very traumatic as

she was trapped inside their shack with her one-year-old baby. She does not know what would have happened, had the firefighters not arrived. They had to hand the baby through the shack’s window. “I thank the firefighters. They came to as-

sist us and we were also able to assist our neighbours,” Fisher says. Fisher and Davids were able to rebuild their shack, but say it has not been easy. The family from the main house is still unsure as to what could have started the fire. They say their electricity cables were intact

and they were not cooking as it was in the early hours of the morning. They appeal to anyone who would like to help. The fire has left them in dire straits with more than 10 people squashed into the house. V To help, contact Hartzenberg on 084 326 4994.

Award celebrates local woman of wonder SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

er passion for community development and her pursuit of justice for those who have been victims of crime just continues to grow. It is this commitment which earned Manenberg community activist Roegshanda Pascoe a Woman of Wonder Award. The award ceremony, which took place on Monday 23 September in Rylands, celebrated women who served their communities. The equally surprised and elated Pascoe was among the recipients. She said the award not only recognised her work but also motivated her to continue. Pascoe said being in the same room with powerful women from different parts of Cape Town gave her an indescribable feeling. “I did not think I would get the award. As a result, I did not prepare a speech. I usually

do not; I speak from the heart,” she explained. She said it was overwhelming to be in the same room with women who had degrees and who had launched great programmes and initiatives for their communities. The mother of three said the fight against injustice was far from over and it needed members of society to unite. She said having a degree did not make you better than anyone who did not have one. The self-confessed challenger of authority is currently not staying at her home. She is being housed at a secret, safe location because she testified in court against a notorious gang member from Manenberg. This put her family in a compromising position because she, her three children and her grandchild were forced to move. The relocation meant that her grandchild could no longer attend school. If it meant she had to vacate her home for justice to prevail, so be it, she said.

Part of the reason Pascoe decided to testify was that she always preached the message of walking the talk. “We always lash out at people for not wanting to testify even though they saw what happened. So I decided to lead by example and testify. It has not been easy,” she said. She was concerned about what would happen to her and her children after the case reached its end. But for now, she is celebrating her award and is looking forward to doing more community work. She is part of the Manenberg Safety Forum, a non-profit organisation (NPO). The NPO, which is financially struggling, serves as a voice for the residents in pursuit of justice. She is appealing to anyone who wishes to assist to make a donation. She is also inviting anyone who wishes to be part of the change to join the NPO. V To get in touch with her, send her a message on Facebook.

Play your part in educating children – prof SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic Lansdowne residents and followers of the slain community activist and Muslim cleric Imam Haron gathered at Islamia College on Wednesday 25 September for Haron’s 12th memorial lecture. The lecture was organised by Imam Abdullah Haron Education Trust (IAHET), established in 2005. According to Mogamad Allie, the secretary of the trust, prominent speakers are invited each year to address attendees on topics related to their field of work. Haron was murdered whilst in police detention in September 1969. He left behind his wife Ghaliema and their three young children. The lecture is held annually to preserve Haron’s memory. A foundation, named after him, was also established to advocate social justice and equality for people from all walks of life. The foundation collaborates with community organisations, such as art groups, and holds engagement events to make people aware of and think about different issues. The speaker at this year memorial lecture was Prof Eric Atmore, adjunct associate professor of social development at the University of Cape Town and director and founder of the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD) in Claremont. He spoke on early childhood development and how it can be a strategy to eradicate poverty and inequality in South Africa. In his speech, Atmore described Haron as a man who was taken from the community at the prime of his life. “This righteous man was a threat to the racist and powerful, minority elite. He worked among the poorest communities of Cape Town and was centrally involved in the political activities of the liberation organisations during these ‘brutally repressive times’ as Prof Aslam Fataar describes this time,” he said. He also spoke about how Haron was loved by many people from areas such as Nyanga, Langa and Gugulethu. He said when he sees Haron’s paintings, it becomes clear that he was a leader of the masses. He also spoke briefly about IAHET. According to him, it was established to promote Haron’s vision of empowering marginalised groups and individuals through education. He said the trust is one of many initiatives which will play a role in changing the story of the suffering of the young people in South Africa.

“The education trust has chosen to build on Imam’s legacy to create a better world for young children, a world in which young children are free from poverty, inequality and injustice,” he said.

Eric Atmore

He urged the attendees to play their part in creating a better and safer environment for the young ones. He described poverty as the enemy and said the lack of early childhood development programmes is alarming.

“If we do not make children a priority, if politicians only kiss children at election time, then in the words of Oliver Tambo: ‘A nation which does not value its children does not deserve its future,’ ” he said.

earners from Hanover Park got the chance to learn outside of a classroom during the school holidays.

They attended a community outreach holiday programme, organised by Phillipi police station in partnership with Moms Who Care, a non-governmental organisation (NGO). At the programme, hosted at a park in Rys-

ton Road on Thursday 26 September, learners were educated on various topics, including substance abuse, sexual offences and the possession of illegal firearms. Phillipi police station spokesperson Lance Goliath says the station has hosted a

range of similar events in the area but this is the first time they worked with the NGO. “It is important for us to work with all the NGOs to reach the end goal: fighting crime,” Goliath says. Learners were cautioned to stay away from guns and to rather focus on their school work. Founder of Moms Who Care, Adeebah Sha, says she was pleased to be part of the event and interact with the youngsters. The NGO, based in Newfields, was founded last year. Its programmes include a feeding scheme and relief assistance in the area of Hanover Park. Sha says it is important to start a conversation about these challenging issues so that they can try and fix it as early as possible. She adds they also invited young mothers to attend the programme because they realised sometimes children are not safe due to parents’ negligence. “We decided to invite and speak to them about safety and security issues with regards to their children. “We find children as young as three, playing in the streets alone,” she says. She adds they were happy with the turnout but would like to see it grow in the future as the message needs to reach a wider audience.

OTTERY

Road project to create jobs T

he R20 million Ottery Road rehabilitation project, which is expected to begin this month, will provide much-needed temporary employment and skills development to residents from surrounding areas. “Up to 7% of the project contract value will be spent on temporary work opportunities to residents from the area and a further 10% on attaining the services of local

enterprises within these wards,” said Mayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, on Thursday 19 September. The project will include portions of Ottery and Olieboom roads which provide important links off Jakes Gerwel Drive and Govan Mbeki Dive to the Phillipi Horticultural and Industrial area. Purchase added that they are investing

in the project to ensure that the businesses in the area will benefit. It will also relieve traffic congestion. “The rehabilitated section of the road will cover a distance of 1km. New sidewalks will be constructed in the southern section of Ottery Road. The traffic circle, as well as, other existing sidewalks will also be rehabilitated,” Purchase said.

If all goes well, the construction is expected to take up to eight months. Ward 43 residents are encouraged to make use of this opportunity and register at their local subcouncil offices on the jobseekers database. To feature on the list of sub-contractors, local businesses must also register at the offices. V For more information, contact 021 391 0021.

Illegal dumping and littering will cost you Strict measures are in place to stop dumping of rubble and other waste. If found guilty, repeat offenders could have their vehicles forfeited, receive fines and impoundment fees of up to R22 400. “The City’s Anti-littering and Dumping Task Team will go out in full force to bring those who dump to book,” read a statement from the City on Tuesday 24 September. The City’s law enforcement department, working closely with other departments such as the metro police, traffic services, water and reticulation and environmental

resource management, will implement a zero tolerance enforcement programme. For July and August, the law enforcement department has issued at least 905 littering fines and 168 dumping fines. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith says: “The City will follow a renewed and integrated approach to clamp down on those who illegally litter and dump waste in public open spaces, parks and City property. “Illegal dumping has a serious effect on the natural and built environment and the

Police nab woman with drugs A 32-year-old woman from Hanover Park was arrested by Lansdowne police for being in possession of drugs on Wednesday 25 September, at 19:00. The officers were tipped off by the community, about a suspect whom they thought might be in the possession of drugs. The police responded and arrested her in a park-

ing lot. Officers reportedly found 120 small units of heroin and two packets of heroin that weighed 40 grams in her possession. The street value is worth R15 000 each. She was arrested and charged with being in the possession of drugs and will appear in the Wynberg magistrate’s court once the investigation has been finalised.

Local libraries encourage residents to play chess The City of Cape Town’s library chess tournament, Chess@Libraries 2019, culminated in a round of nail-biting games at the Parow Library where the finals took place last Friday 27 September. After months of elimination rounds, 74 participants from 19 libraries squared off on the black and white boards. The winner was Robert Kuziyamisa and the runner up was Shaun Smith, both patrons from Lentegeur Library. “Chess is becoming more popular and this tournament has drawn players of all ages from around the city. A number of our libraries already have established chess clubs, and with more reporting a marked interest in the game, we are fully in support of growing chess in our libraries,” said the Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroo-

dien, who handed over several chess sets to the library and information services department, with more sets earmarked for other libraries. Some of the chess clubs meet regularly, others meet on an ad hoc basis, while some hope to gain enough interest and chess set donations to get them going. “The benefits of board games, and especially chess, cannot be overstated. Anyone can learn and the benefits are not just scientific. While it exercises both sides of the brain and improves problem-solving skills, playing chess is a fun way of learning how to follow the rules and can help build self-confidence,” said Badroodien. The Chess@Libraries 2019 initiative was pioneered and spearheaded by librarian, Daniel Arendse of Leonsdale Library, who has been involved in the game since 1995 when he started playing while still at primary school. He started chess clubs at several libraries and in 2017 initiated Chess@Libraries as he believes chess is beneficial, regardless of age. Badroodien commended the initiative. “Chess allows our libraries to be true facilities of learning, growing, socialising and relaxation. “While I congratulate the winners on games well played, I want to encourage our patrons, young and old, to get on board,” Badroodien added. City has the responsibility on behalf of residents to protect the environment.” Smith says apart from destroying the environment, including contaminating subterranean and surface water resources as well as possible health risks, dumping can also damage city infrastructure. According to the statement, seizure and impoundment of the vehicle used in dumping will be for the expense of the owner or the person holding or operating the vehicle. The vehicle will not be released unless the case is concluded.

Impoundment fees will cost dumpers: R8 700 for the first offence, R11 700 for the second offence and R17 400 for the third offence. In addition to these, the offender will also be issued with a R5 000 for contravening the by-law. Smith says the City requests the public to assist law enforcement officials in reporting any illegal dumping activity “so that the Task Team can act swiftly”. V Residents can report illegal dumping by phoning 0860 103 089, 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

Engines to rev at Killarney S

tart your engines for the fourth annual Killarney Motor Show, at the Cape town home of motorsport, Killarney International Raceway, on Sunday 27 October. The organisers are taking the revs up again with close to 1 300 vehicles on show and more than 100 stalls selling just about anything you can think of for your car – and your tummy – with a huge variety of watering holes serving ice-cold drinks, sit-down eats and takeaway vendors. There’s a new, more accessible layout, an entirely new category of exhibitors and fascinating new displays to delight spectators and keep them at the show all day, from when gates open at 10:00 until the show closes at 17:00, including live music and a funfair in the pits paddock offering exciting rides for children of all ages. This year’s show will feature no less than four active circuits, starting with the tar oval, where the Cape Hell Drivers will be running a full tar oval racing event at the show. Next door to that is the arena section; as its name suggests, that’s where you’ll experience non-stop entertainment including stunts, drifting, burnouts, classic motorcycles and even vintage tractor parades and tug-o-war contests. There will be public karting on the one-

kilometre ‘K’ circuit, to give a real taste of how Formula One greats Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Ayrton Senna started their racing careers, while the new car dealers have their own dedicated testdrive circuit for the first time, offering testdrives on the latest models all day – including electric cars – another first for the Killarney Motor Show. Trials expert and Dakar Rally hero, Kobus Potgieter will show how to ride over all sorts of natural obstacles, while international stunt stars, brothers Bruce and Brent le Riche will amaze you with impossible stunts on two wheels, including riding almost four metres straight up the side of a truck! In addition, the new car dealers will have their own dedicated test drive circuit for the first time, a one-kilometre loop around the bank on Fastron Corner and through the drag-strip paddock, offering test drives on the latest models all day. The show is open from 10:00 to 17:00 and tickets can be booked at Computicket or paid for at the gate: R100 for adults, R50 for learners under 16 and free if you’re under 12 or on presentation of your membership book if you’re a Western Province Motor Club member.
