Plant a tree and breathe ... As part of the province’s Arbor Month activities, mayor Dan Plato and a few City council members visited Mary Harding School in Athlone to plant trees. More than five trees were planted at the event which took place on Wednesday 18 September. Plato’s message to learners was to take care of nature as it plays a vital role in life. resident of Hanover Park felt so strongly about uplifting young girls in her community that she started a project called Girls in Leadership with the help of a primary school teacher. A collaboration between Wendy Augusto and Park Fields Primary School teacher Gail Wyngaard led to the establishment of the support group last year. Since then, the project has already shown results. Augusto was doing practical work at Park Fields Primary School as part of her social

auxiliary studies at Akademos Institute of Training (AIT) when she realised the need for a support group for girls. Having grown up in Hanover Park, Augusto says the support group is personal to her. She grew up in difficult circumstances and wants to assist girls in similar situations. “We aim to reinstall Grade 7 girls with their sense of self-worth, self-respect and self-value so that they can become future leaders and inspire fellow learners and their community,” she explains. She says the importance of education, healthy living, abstinence, appreciation of oneself and making positive life choices are

at the core of the support programme. She says they are doing their bit to try to ensure the girls have a better future. “We want them to rise above negative circumstances or difficult backgrounds and to prosper, despite the odds that are against them,” she explains. Girls in Leadership is run as an afterschool programme. Motivational talks are held and the girls are sometimes taken on excursions. Augusto hopes to expand the programme to other areas but she says the lack of resources is a challenge. She calls on people to pledge their support

in any way they can. The support group is currently working with the second group of Grade 7 girls. The programme made a big difference in the lives of girls who were part of the first group. Wyngaardt says the first group, who has since moved on to high school, has shown a positive change in behaviour and an improvement in their academic commitment. “If we can expand the programme, we can assist and support more girls. “The programme gives them hope. It helps them realise their potential,” she says. V To pledge support, call Wendy on 073 813 2631.

hen her children left school 33 years ago, she decided to be of service to her community and fellow man. Since the 1980s Margaret Voogt (83) from Blomtuin, Bellville, has dedicated her whole life to serving her fellow man and community – and is still doing it. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers. “I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home. She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do. “I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries. “Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect second-

The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community. At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day. “I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled. Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild. V The winners of the awards will be announced at a morning tea on 12 October in Cape Town. Winners and runners-up will walk away Shoprite vouchers and other prizes sponsored by TygerBurger, People’s Post, City Vision, and Spec-Savers.

They went to the madrasah where they were taught how to recite out of the Quran. Imam Gasan Moos said he was very proud of the youngsters for reaching this milestone. “We need to motivate our young children to learn the Quran. It must be done from a very young age,” Moos said. He added he was even more proud of the ones who can’t yet read English. “They were able to read a foreign language – Arabic – and they did that effortlessly.” Taha Khatieb (7) is one of the proud graduates. The Grade 1 York Road Primary School learner said he enjoyed attending classes at the madrasah. He said he is proud of himself for completing the programme. His favourite chapter in the Quran is the one that speaks about the moon and the stars.

hadwin Nel wishes to use his music to inspire and motivate the youth – not just in his home town of Manenberg but across Cape Town. The 18-year-old local musician, who has

performed at various events and gigs including the recent street concert held in Manenberg, spoke to People’s Post about his future plans. He says he is into rap and RnB and prefers writing his own songs. He writes about personal experiences, some deeply personal, such as the song about fathers who are not exemplary which he performed at the street

concert. He’s currently in matric at Phoenix Secondary School. While releasing an album is part of his future plans, he says he has to focus on his school work for now. He’s already penned a number of songs for the album, including one called “Come Home”. According to him, the song is dedicated to people who are feeling lonely who have no one else to turn to for support and company. “This is my way of calling my loved ones to come home and give me comfort. I hope people can connect and relate to the song,” he explains. For him, music is not just about the melody. “Music makes me feel free. “It gives me a sense of belonging. It is my passion and I wish to share it with the world,” he explains. He draws inspiration Chadwin Nel from artists such as Jimmy Nevis and Aziza Davids. He plans to study computer science next year and has already applied at a number of tertiary institutions. He stresses his music will not be placed on the back burner while studying. He has

hen people move and dance together, a sense of unity is created. This was the aim of a community dance session held by Move It in collaboration with the non-governmental organisation (NGO)

Salesian Life Choices in Lansdowne on Tuesday 17 September. People from different backgrounds attended the first mini Biodanza community dance session titled “Meet and Move” at the Salesian Life Choices premises. Move It was started more than 50 years ago in South America and has since spread

because she believes dancing has the ability to unite people. When Life Choices gave her proposal a thumbs up, she was elated. She said once people start moving and dancing, positive energy is released – something desperately needed in a country currently overwhelmed by negativity. “The aim is to get people to dance and get to know one another, focusing on positivity. It is also about healing the community and to rather focus on what unites us than what divides us,” she explained. According to her, the session was the first in the area and she hopes it will expand and be extended to other areas too. “My dream is to get all communities working together,” she said. She was disappointed with the turnout though and said she hoped more people would come to the next session. Speaking on behalf of Life Choices, Nthaks Maema said they feel proud to be part of such an initiative. She said the NGO always seeks different ways of healing, be it for the staff members or for their beneficiaries. She said they use different methods to achieve that and made mention of music and dance. She added the timing of the event could not be better as social cohesion is “drastically needed” by communities. “This is a perfect way for us to connect, bond and have fun in a safe and non-judgemental environment. “The more we connect, the more we find solutions to issues that we have,” Maema explained. While sessions have no stipulated cover charge, she encouraged people to make a donation. V For more information about the sessions, call Annelize Becht on 082 924 3871.

ARBOR MONTH

Plant a tree and breathe ... SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

P

eople do not need to go to the beach when they want to relax, they can sit under the trees and breathe in the same fresh air. These were the words of Adriaan Gradwell, principal of Mary Harding School, during a tree planting ceremony held at the school on Wednesday 18 September. The event, which was also attended by the executive mayor of Cape Town, Dan Plato, was part of the mayoral activities undertaken during Arbor Month. During September, Plato and members of the City’s department of recreation and parks have embarked on a series of tree planting activities across the City. Their aim is to plant more than 1000 indigenous trees and plants across the city during Arbor Month. One of the sites identified by the City was Mary Harding School in Athlone. The school takes care of learners from Grade R to Grade 5 with mental and intellectual challenges. They currently have 294 learners. Gradwell thanked the City for choosing their school and described the donation of trees as a “wonderful gesture.” “This is brilliant of the mayor to come to a school in a community such as Athlone and plant some trees, because in most cases we are neglected when it comes to things

like this (recreational activities),” he said. He expressed events such as this one tend to be held in more affluent areas. He said the event also encourages the learners to take care of the environment . He also thanked the mayor’s office for getting the learners involved. Some of the learners travelled with the mayor to the City’s nursery in Newlands to choose and fetch the trees that were later planted at the school. In a statement, Plato said it is vital to get young people interested in the environment, since they will be the ones who will be looking after the parks and recreational spaces in the future. “By involving them in the planting of trees, we help them understand the importance of being aware of and looking after their surroundings,” he said. This year’s theme for Arbor Month was “Forests and Sustainable Cities”. The campaign wanted to raise awareness of the importance of South Africa’s indigenous forests and promote sustainable cities. Plato added that Arbor Month played an important role in the greening of open spaces. According to him, the tree planting activities they have embarked on were part of his “back-to-basics” campaign which is aimed at focusing on getting basic service delivery right.

TITLE DEEDS HANDED OVER

Home is where the heart is A

dream came true for 40 elderly residents who were handed their historical title deeds at the Athlone stadium on Monday 16 September. Some of them have been waiting for more than 20 years. The recipients hail from areas such as Wallacedene, Langa, Atlantis, Joe Slovo, Kleinvlei, Wesbank and Mfuleni. One of the elated recipients was 79-yearold Paul Oostenhuizen, a resident from Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plain. The acting Mayco member for human settlements, Felicity Purchase said the City is

making every effort to expedite the handing over of title deeds. “There are various challenges which delay the handover of historical title deeds,” said Purchase. “These houses were handed over to beneficiaries as far back as 20 years ago, during a previous administration, where at the time, the priority was the construction. The performance targets did not include the delivery of the actual legal transfers.” She added delays can be due to the misalignment of erf numbers to the housing sub-

sidy system, the fact that some of the beneficiaries are difficult to trace; and determining lawful and illegal occupation of houses can also provide problems along the way. Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg said the event was the City’s way of empowering residents who were previously denied access to property ownership. “The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones,” he said. He added there is no greater pride than taking care of a house that a person can call their own and turn it into a home.

Twigg added the issue of housing and the well-being of senior citizens is of utmost importance to the City. “Today, many families still live as tenants or without ownership rights in houses they have lived in for generations. “Handing over the title deeds is a way in which the City is able to rectify the injustices of the past,” he said. He added that service delivery is about improving the lives of people and adding value to their lives. According to him, the handing of title deeds is part of the City’s commitment to building a caring city. “Owning a home for many residents is something that they only dreamed of. We are pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality,” he said.

“W

hen I am asked what it is that drew me to working with children, I tell people that their joy and their resilience is driven by their sense of wonder, all too often forgotten in adulthood,” says Prof Alan Davidson, head of haematology-oncology at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital. Davidson was speaking at Reach for a Dream’s formal handover of two new “Dream Rooms” – a revamped day room in the oncology ward and a playroom in the surgical ward – on Wednesday 18 September. The rooms offer children, and parents, a safe space to go and escape from their clinical surroundings. Big Concerts and Reach For A Dream joined forces to create the first of these rooms in Cape Town children’s hospitals. Heidi Rowley, Western Cape branch manager for Reach for a Dream, says here the children can have fun, read, play and focus on activities that entertain and stimulate them. “Eventually, there will be 30 such rooms at hospitals which provide critical care to

children with life-threatening illnesses between the ages of three and 18.” Rowley says the foundation aims to take children out into a new environment with their families to create “dream experiences”. “But for those who rely on constant treatment and observation, it’s impossible to step out of the hospital, which is why the Dream Room concept is so important,” she explains. Justin van Wyk, chief executive officer of Big Concerts, and his wife Karen say the Dream Room initiative is close to their hearts. The promoter of live entertainment events has supported the foundation since 2015 when it made two children’s dream to attend a One Direction concert come true. But the Van Wyks’s involvement became a lot more personal when their daughter, Annabelle (5), was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of three and a half. “We had just moved into our new home. Adrian (now 7) and Annabelle were so excited about having their own rooms for the first time. Then

Annabelle was diagnosed. A day later, she was admitted to Red Cross hospital. We went from this warm and fuzzy environment to a clinical one, just like that.” Justin says the experience was pretty scary. They ended up having to spend three weeks in hospital followed by another six weeks a year later. “When Mervyn Serebro (national chairman for the foundation) announced the Dream Room initiative at the gala event last year, it resonated with me and Karen,” he says. In addition to the two Dream Rooms, the reception area at the oncology ward also got a makeover. It now boasts a colourful play area complete with brand new chairs, tables and toys. When it comes to the surgical ward’s new playroom (which includes an Xbox), Sister Nomsa Nxu, operational manager: nursing, says she is not sure who was more thrilled: her or the children.

“I was so excited when I was told of the plans to create the playroom. It made me feel like a child again. The Dream Room’s purpose is twofold. Yes, it’s for the children, but it is also a place where tired moms, who often stay up the whole night – worrying about their children – can go to rest for a bit.” The handover comes hot on the heels of the upgrade of the oncology-haematology unit at the hospital. The unit now sports state-of-the-art ECG monitors, private consulting rooms and isolation areas for vulnerable patients, as well as a counselling room for a social worker. It also includes fully equipped ablution facilities for families, a renovated filing room and a bigger and more comfortable nurses’ tea room. Big Concerts also contributed generously to this project driven by the Children’s Hospital Trust (CHT). Gas extraction project in full swing T

he landfill gas flaring project at the Coastal Park landfill facility in Muizenberg has been firing on all cylinders since it was launched about 18 months ago. This project is aimed at destroying methane gas that is produced by the landfill, and converting this to less harmful carbon dioxide and energy. To date methane, equivalent to about 138 000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, has been destroyed at the landfill. World Ozone Day was commemorated on Monday 16 September and it was a time to once again do a health check on the ozone layer, its depletion and what can be done differently to further protect it. The ozone layer acts as an invisible shield and protects people from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun “Methane gas, which is present in the landfill, has a global warming potential approximately 25 times greater than carbon dioxide. Not only does this offset carbon emissions, but gas that is converted to energy can be used to fuel a variety of operations,” said Mayco member for water and waste, Xanthea Limberg. She said the City is committed to reducing its carbon footprint from municipal infra-

structure and services, by rolling out this project at other City landfill sites in 18-months’ time. Methane is a highly combustible gas that can be collected and used as a heating fuel, to generate electricity or as a fuel for vehicles. The gas extraction and flaring systems have been established at Coastal Park and Bellville South landfills, and a similar system will be constructed at the Vissershok South landfill. The Coastal Park landfill gas Phase 2 of the landfill gas flaring project in underway. extraction project has yielded a number of successes since its inception: been established which is used to generate . countries to implement approved carbon offsetting projects, which developed countries may invest in by purchasing “carbon credits”. The City has now initiated the tender process to realise phase 2 of the project where the infrastructure will be extended to the other landfills. “The destruction of this greenhouse gas, which is a major contributor to global warming, assists not only the City but contributes to national climate change mitigation goals,” said Limberg. Methane gas in landfills is created when organic matter decomposes. Therefore, the City is working to reduce volumes of organic waste sent to landfill sites through a number of programmes, including the Home Composting container rollout, which encourages residents to make use of organic waste for their green spaces. RONDEBOSCH

Magic show to cast an enchanting spell NETTALIE VILJOEN

S

ay the word “magician” and the image of a man in a black suit, waving a wand around, immediately pops into your head.

This is the stereotype that Rondebosch resident Santika Naidoo (21), a graduate of the College of Magic and a member of its voluntary teaching staff, wants to change. “Too many girls grow up thinking the only

avenue open to them in the magic and illusion industry is that of the ambiguous temptress, standing on the side. But they don’t want to be the one just holding the props or even being the prop. So they begin to believe magic isn’t for girls.” Naidoo, director of the college’s latest production World of Magic!, is living proof that nothing is further from the truth. The full-time Arts in Film and Television, Psychology and Organisational Psychology student is in her final year at the University of Cape Town. She says her participation in the college’s six-year training programme played a huge role in her decision to pursue a career in entertainment. “The college offers a range of courses. One of them is theatre production which focuses more on the technical side, for example, editing and lighting. My training taught me so many skills and it opened my eyes to the opportunities in the industry.” She says the understanding of how to create a guided and immersive experience is one of the greatest lessons taught at the college. “Modern technology and social media have caused us as a society to become distant from one another. But people still crave that feeling of being connected, of being immersed in the moment. With the knowledge I’ve gained, I hope to create that holistic experience for audiences.” So, for her, the reward for heading up this new show as its director is twofold. Besides crafting a magical journey for audiences,

she also has the chance to transform the roles of women in the male-dominated magic industry. “We specialise in making the impossible possible at the College of Magic. Having spent years training under the tutelage of strong female magicians, I relished the opportunity to help our young girls find their own voice and performance styles.” The show’s diverse cast features some of the Mother City’s exceptional entertainers, illusionists, clowns and jugglers, all between the ages of 10 and 19. It promises to whisk the audience through a fantastical world filled with illusions, magic, hilarious antics and fun-filled fantasy. When Naidoo and her then codirector, Michelle Gore, were given the task to put together the production at the beginning of the year, they decided to recreate that sense of childlike wonder. Gore withdrew from the project in August to pursue her PhD studies in atmospheric sciences at the Tenn State University in the United States of America (USA). “By taking the audience on a journey through the different worlds of magic, the show reminds you what it felt like when everything was still new and exciting; when your desire to explore was bigger than the fear of the unknown,” says Naidoo. Catch the show at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 6 October at 14:00 and 16:30. Tickets are R165 with discounts for family bookings available. Book at Computicket. Strong melodies, sensitivity and improvisation at play Shannon Mowday, a celebrated jazz soloist and composer, masterfully blends sounds of Africa and Scandinavia in her production, Lila for one night only at Jazz at the Nassau. The Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Jazz (2007), has united musicians with whom she has worked since moving to Norway in 2009, each with a very unique musical identity. The production’s musicians include Mowday (soprano, alto, baritone and bass saxes, bass and contra-alto clarinet, composition), Helge Lien (piano), Johannes Eick (six-string acoustic bass), Erik Nylander (drums) and

Asle Karstad (sound design). Supported by Norway Music, Lila had its debut performance on the Oslo Jazz Festival this year, followed by performances in Norway and South Africa. Through the art of spontaneous “play”, the musicians seek to find both common ground in expression and also explore beyond borders of musical genres or expectations of style. Mowday’s playing is a combination of power and high energy juxtaposed with sensitivity. Her unique compositions reflect her travels, her South African roots and extensive musical experience; drawing from na-

ture, folklore, life experience and also presenting important issues for social discourse. Catch Lila on Sunday 29 September at 19:30 at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School, Palmyra Road, Newlands, Cape Town. Athletes enjoy fast, flat, fun race RASHIED ISAACS

M

SA Multisport held their third annual league race on Sunday 22 September through the streets of Kenwyn and Wynberg. The race is labelled the “triple F” – fast, flat and fun. The race catered for distances of 5km and 10km. Just over 1 500 participants were blessed with cool weather; with Raydon Balie (30:34) of Eerste River and Langa’s Pamela Moyikwa (39:02) using it to their advantage to beat a top field of runners in the open categories.

The Langa club have been consistently sharing the podium of late with the most noticeable addition to the club, Fortunate Chidzivo, who smashed the Cape Town marathon 10km course record last week, Sunday 15 September. The MSA race is a start of a series of races lined up for this week on the Western Province Athletics calendar with the Nantes Athletics Club poised to host their annual race on Tuesday 24 September, and Goodwood Harriers ending off a festival of running on Saturday 27 September. Here are a few snaps from Sunday’s race in Wynberg.

CPUT ladies’ soccer team entertained the crowd with scintillating football displays during a nail-biting final against UWC, which the hosts won 1-0.

UCT triumphant in intervarsity tournament Hundreds of students braved the weekend’s inclement weather to attend the annual Western Cape Intervarsity games hosted by Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) at their Bellville Campus. The tournament saw CPUT, the University of Western Cape (UWC), the University of Cape Town (UCT), Stellenbosch University (US) and Varsity College putting each other through their paces in sports such as soccer, basketball, water polo, table tennis, badminton, fencing, ulti-

mate frisbee and tennis. The chilly and rainy weather disrupted outdoor codes such as cricket, netball, beach volleyball and tennis. Last year’s overall champions, US relinquished their title to this year’s champions, UCT, who won the event, scoring 50 points. Stellenbosch was second with 45 points and UWC came third with 30 points. CPUT, which dominated soccer as both their men’s and ladies’ teams won the finals, came fourth with 26 points and Varsi-

ty College fifth with 13 points. The tournament started in 2016 and was held at UWC, while CPUT hosted it for the first time this year. CPUT sports and culture manager, Siyabulela Mkwalo, said: “I am very excited with what we achieved today despite the bad weather. We are disappointed that we had to cancel some sporting codes. Overall, I am happy we have achieved the strategic objectives of the event which was to create a platform for the students to have fun and

enjoyment. The best team won, although the tournament was not about winning but participation,” said Mkwalo. CPUT men’s soccer team captain, Bongumusa Mbali, said winning the soccer section of the tournament can open doors for them and hopes that the CPUT management will increase their support for the team. “I’m very grateful for the guys that played and those who didn’t play for the support we got both from the CPUT team and other teams,” said Bongumusa.
