Nominate those elder heroes now Do you know elder superheroes who, despite their age and social circumstances, go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities? Nominate them now for a Community Champions Elders Award. Through the awards, now in its fourth year, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers, aim to honour those awesome elders who are making a profound difference in their communities. He, or she, could be the older, active neighbourhood watch patroller walking the streets at 04:00, feeding the children in their street, driving the sick to the clinic, knitting beanies and blankets for unwanted babies or giving free boxing lessons to keep the youth off the streets, all out of their own pockets. Tell us what wonderful deeds they’ve done for their community.

HANOVER PARK

‘We should be ashamed ...’ SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

“W

hen is this going to end?” This was a common question as various community organisations gathered at the Cape of Good Hope Castle, in Cape Town, on Thursday 1 August, to remember all the lives that have been lost as a result of gang violence in the province. The emotionally-charged event was organised by The Alcardo Andrews Foundation, a Hanover Park based nongovernmental organisation (NGO). The organisation runs a range of community activities including a daily soup kitchen. They also have a skills centre and a component called Moms Move for Justice (MMJ). MMJ, which is also part of the foundation, was started in 2015 after the foundation’s founder, Avril Andrews lost her son in an act gang violence. Through MMJ the foundation assists and supports parents who suffered the same fate. Thursday’s cold weather could not deter their spirits. Participants waved banners and placards with messages such as: “protect

our children”, “enough is enough” and “justice for my child”, as they made their way through the streets of Cape Town to the Castle. The event was opened with a prayer by faith leaders and despite the rain, a candle was lit in memory of the deceased. Speakers took turns sharing the podium, demanding answers to the scourge of violence that has gripped the community. “What Have We Done?/Senzeni Na?” chanted some residents and speakers. In an interview with People’s Post, Andrews said the event was not just about gang-related murders but was also about speaking openly against crime in various communities in the province. It was also about addressing injustices suffered by women. “We are supposed to be celebrating Women’s Month but we cannot because we are here. We have to do this, we cannot just move on and forget about what happened. Mothers need justice for their sons and daughters who were killed,” expressed Andrews. According to her, the event sought to bring families together and provide

comfort. Lucinda Evans, Mitchell’s Plain community activist, called on community organisations and residents to take a stand against crime and protect women. She said the country is nowhere near to conquering violence against women and children. “We should be ashamed of ourselves (as adults) if young boys are the ones advocating for an end of violence, and that a small boy like this (Levi Andrews) asks the question ‘when is the killing going to stop?’,” she exclaimed. Levi (9) from Hanover Park earlier took part in the candle-lighting ceremony. He told the crowd it was too much for him to deal will all the violence and crime in the communities. Evans emphasised the need for the rights of women to be taken seriously. “We are not taking the plight of women seriously.” Evans reckons if no immediate action is taken, the situation will only get worse. She said children do not only carry the physical scars but life-long scars as the violence affects them psychologically. That, she said, will “mess up” the children as they grow into adults.

Nominations close on Tuesday 27 August Elders making a difference can once again be nominated in one of two categories: “70-80 years” or “80 plus”. Hopefuls line up for City enforcement vacancies P

assersby of the City’s Ndabeni Metro Police training facility this week would have been forgiven for thinking it was the location of an intense strongman competition as thousands of Capetonians were put through their paces. The City of Cape Town’s Metro Police Training College started assessments for 12 335 candidates last week, in the search of 120 candidates who will undertake the learnership programme for traffic service and Metro police vacancies. Since Monday 29 July, candidates have reported to the Ndabeni facility for a physical assessment – the first step in determining whether they will qualify for the job. Candidates were subjected to a 2.4km run within 13 minutes for men and 15 minutes and 30 seconds for women, a reach test, push-

ups, sit-ups and shuttle runs. “This physical assessment is not for the faint-hearted. We require that all of our operational staff have a level of physical capability to do the job, and anyone who fails to meet the requirements of the physical assessment is not allowed to proceed to the next phase,” said Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. He added: “It is also no walk in the park for the staff, who are assessing an average of 1 050 individuals a day, over a 12-day period. The number of applications is astounding and speaks to the need for gainful employment. These jobs are no walk in the park, but I trust that there are candidates in the crowd of thousands who will one day wear the uniform with pride and serve and protect their communities with distinction.”

Once the physical assessments are completed, the candidates left standing will partake in a written assessment, followed by interviews. The successful candidates will move on to the 12-month traffic learnership, followed by a six-month municipal policing qualification at the Metro Police Training College in Observatory. “In the past six months, we have spoken often about increasing our enforcement footprint, particularly with the additional budget that has been made available to the Safety and Security Directorate. This recruitment process is directly linked to those announcements made. We will soon be celebrating the graduation of another batch of Metro Police and traffic officers, which will further increase our numbers on the ground,” added Smith.

Kids to shine in circus NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku The public is urged to see ordinary children do extraordinary things at the second edition of The Greatest Little Circus on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August. The Salt River-based Zip Zap Academy has created a platform for children to shine through the one and a half-hour-long show at 12:00 and 16:00, happening at the academy’s dome. Choreographer, Christine Chapman says the show revolves around a movie called The Greatest Showman. “We all loved the movie. It illustrates how circus started and we are all where we are today, because of traditional circus. “It is a fun, light-hearted show and exudes lots of energy. It’s ideal for the whole family and highly entertaining,” says Chapman. She added that the circus encourages kids to “dare to dream to see what they can achieve”. They work as a team to achieve a common goal. “Passion and perseverance pay off,” Chapman says, as she feels the young performers earned this opportunity.

Some of the Zip Zap crew members.

“We always choose about a quarter of our performers to feature in the shows. This all depends on how hard they work, and we try to give them all a chance in the spotlight. At the end of the day, all the kids at Zip Zap have great skills and they all deserve a chance in the spotlight,” she adds. Zip Zap Academy offers free programmes to participants, to nurture and help young people to realise their talent. It has been around for 27 years. They get split into groups depending on

their advancement, with the older and more advanced members moving to a group called the Zappers. According to Chapman, at this stage, the performers get training to focus more on their specialities, rather than doing all the different acts, to get them ready for the professional stage and getting them focused on pursuing a career in the art of circus. Shelter safety concerns raised at protest SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

for them as shack workers and managers to stand together and be a united voice. She said Zulu accepted their memorandum in which they detailed different demands and due dates. “She promised to look at our demands and to find integrated ways with relevant departments to play an integral role in finding solutions,” explained Lange. One of their demands to the national government was for it to create a balanced method of treating shelters. They are referring to government-managed shelters and non-governmental organisation (NPO) managed shelters. They alleged that there was an imbalance in terms of resources and payments. Their demands also included a shelter manager for each shelter, a social worker for each shelter, three house mothers for each

shelter and an administrator for each shelter. Lange said funds were dwindling as the businesses that usually sponsored them were closing down. Also present at the protest was Bernadine Bachar, chairperson of WCWSM and director of Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children. Bachar said they needed the DSD and national treasury to urgently address the gaps within the shelter funding structure and for it to be done uniformly. “It does not make sense that in one province, shelters get as little as R9 per person, per day to meet the needs of women residing at shelters, while in another province shelters get up to R71. And, of course, without enough funds, shelters are unable to offer the programmes that survivors of abuse need to heal and move forward,” she said.

n an effort to get the government’s attention and to tend to safety concerns of shelters in the province, Western Cape Women’s Shelter Movement (WCWSM) marched to parliament on Tuesday 23 July. They handed over a memorandum of demands to the national minister of Department of Social Development (DSD), Lindiwe Zulu, highlighting the need for funds to improve the state of shelters for abused women in the province. The physical structures and the livelihoods of those who work in the shelters need a financial boost. The movement works hand-in-hand with National Shelter Movement of South Africa (NSM), which has one mission; to advocate for rights of shelter workers and to fight for recognition of the work shelters do. The WCWSM’s plan to pay the parliament a visit was inevitable but the release of a report by the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) gave them more impetus. The report is titled “Investigative Report: State of Shelters in South Africa”. In a statement, the WCWSM said the report confirmed that shelters provided critical services to abused women, but that the movement had been unfairly treated by the national government when it came to financial support. “(Our efforts) are severely hampered as a result of chronic under-funding and highly variable subsidies provided by provincial DSD for shelters across the country,” the statement read. The protest was joined by residents from Lansdowne, Manenberg and Ottery. Joy Lange, an executive member of NSM, was one of the protesters who braved the weather. She said the aim was Protesters say shelters should be supported by government equally.

Plastic pollution event to let cat out of the bag NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Craft+Graft, a space in Gardens designed for people to come together and drive their ideas forward, will join hands with various environmentally friendly organisations to brainstorm ideas and share information about plastic pollution on Thursday 22 Au-

The event, themed “Ocean+Plastic: From awareness to action, what can I do”, will run from 18:00 to 20:00 and is open to all. “Plastic pollution affects people of all races, creeds and ages,” says Ceylan Thomson, a managing director at Craft+Graft. She says the event aims to provide the public with the latest information on plastic

pollution in oceans, discussing how the pollution challenge is being solved in South Africa. An overview of how to change consumer habits will be discussed to raise awareness and promote conversations around different environmental topics. In May, the focus was on “Digital Ecology: fighting pollution with clean technologies”, and in June “Climate+Change: An honest talk about the global climate crisis” was discussed. Thomson says their organisation is dedicated to bringing awareness to environmental issues through the joint initiative by small ocean-related stakeholders, working on the cutting-edge of reducing the plastic pollution in oceans. Non-profit organisations involved include Save our Soles, Cape Research and Diver Development and Sea The Bigger Picture. They all play different roles in conserving the ocean. “Yes, each of the respective organisations has had successful campaigns to reduce the use of single-use plastic. “Craft+Graft tries to limit our environmental footprint wherever we can. We use ecofriendly supplies, compostable packaging, and bio-degradable cleaning supplies. We also encourage our customers to bring their coffee cup and skip wasteful, to-go packaging,” she says. HEIDEVELD

We want to breathe, say residents SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

K

eeping his promise, Cape Town’s executive mayor Dan Plato went on a walkabout of Heideveld, which he vowed to take last month (“Mayor Listens to Residents”, People’s Post, Tuesday 30 July).

He entered houses, interacted with owners who spoke to him about their household problems, and took down their names. Without giving too much away, Plato said the plan was to listen to residents’ complaints and then to take it from there. “I do not want to say too much right now but you pick up the sentiments, you pick up

the issues. There are several issues and I need to focus on those issues,” Plato said as he walked through the area. Plato’s door-to-door visits were in answer to a collective wish by residents and community organisations. It allowed residents from the subsidised housing project, which they moved into in 2016, the opportunity to complain to the mayor about a range of housing issues. Complaints included the lack of ventilators in the houses and cracks in the walls. They also alleged that a promise made when they moved in by the City to subsidise the houses from the value of R120 000 never happened. Instead, they were served with papers with bills, they alleged. They also claimed that there were discrepancies in the housing allocation process. Some people were not given houses after being on the waiting list from as early as 1993. They claimed that houses were given to younger people who had only been on the waiting list from 2014 onwards. Resident Vanessa Adriaanse, the founder of Mothers for Justice X a community organisation X said that they had invited the mayor to expose Ward 44 councillor Anthony Moses, whom she described as “doing nothing”. According to Adriaanse, they have been trying to approach Moses to inform him about their grievances but she alleged that he was always unaDan Plato takes down the names vailable. of homeowners whose houses have “He is either in Johannesburg or faults. PHOTO: SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA we do not know. Today he is here because he does not have a choice; the

mayor is here,” said Adriaanse. She expressed the hope that a proper follow-up meeting would be held after Plato’s visit, allowing them the chance to engage with him extensively. She also wishes for a fresh start in their community. Another frustrated resident is Faisah Gamildien who also complained about the lack of ventilators in the houses. The 79year-old said water is sometimes cut off and that makes life difficult. “I am old and live alone. The electricity that has been installed in this house shocks me when I walk barefoot,” she said. Ward councillor Moses rubbished residents’ claims that he was not readily available to the community. He said that people needed to understand that as a member of the council, he had other responsibilities and meetings that he needed to attend to. He added that residents needed to make an appointment to meet him. He was, however, quick to emphasise that he was an official for the people to interact with him. “My office is open on Tuesday. Today was my office day. I have been in the office where people visited me. Even if my phone is off, there is someone in the office. I have community members who can vouch as to how many times I have seen them,” Moses said. He said he was not certain as to when the council would get back to the residents with a report on their grievances. “There were many concerns raised and they went to certain levels within the administration. “We have asked the mayor to come out and see the plight that our communities live in and to see whether the mayor can help us address these issues. In August, there will be various sessions with the communities,” Moses added.

Residents get a chance to comment on local tourism A survey to determine whether tourism will benefit the Mitchell’s Plain community is underway. A similar survey was previously held in Khayelitsha and, according to the findings, most residents were very positive about tourism and tourist routes being rolled out in the area. The organisation conducting the survey, ovatoyou, aims to conduct similar research in Langa, Grassy Park and Athlone. Amanda Reekie, ovatoyou’s founding director, said the survey intends to support the community in building a tourism offering and to include residents. “The detail of how this will

happen has not been determined,” she added. Reekie said the survey was about establishing whether tourism benefits communities through job creation. According to Reekie, the survey aimed to discover which sites within the community would appeal to tourists and what the possible barriers in the community were for tourism and tourists. She said although challenges had been identified in the survey in Khayelitsha, the overall response had been very positive. According to Reekie, once the information about the survey in the areas was collected, it would

be used to determine the attitude about tourism in the communities and the correct approach to take in the various areas. “If the decision to hold tourism workshops in the community is taken, the company will engage with the community.” As an incentive to complete the survey, Ovatoyou is offering R5 000 to be shared by five winners from each community surveyed. Up for grabs are a R2 000, two R1 000 and two R500 prizes. Winners will be chosen through a random draw. V To register, visit http://surveys.ovatoyou.co.za. SEA POINT

Human beings ‘a threat to rangers’ NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

S

outh African National Parks (Sanparks) has begun the process to deploy 120 tourism monitors to various parks after a spate of attacks on rangers and tourists in the

Cape region. The announcement was made during the annual World Rangers Day event held at Mouille Point in Sea Point on Wednesday 31 July. The day commemorated the rangers who died or were injured in the line of duty and

celebrated the role rangers play in the conservation of nature. The event was held just a few days after the fatal attack on Ukrainian tourist, Ivan Ivanon (43), who was stabbed at East Fort, Chapman’s Peak Drive, in Hout Bay on Saturday 27 July.

From left are Duwayne Bartlett, Aslam Levy and Jochemes Marais reenacting an abalone poaching situation.

Sanparks managing executive of parks Senzeni Mokoena said the incident is one of many alarming attacks that have happened in the parks. He said it had become evident that human beings were more of a threat to rangers than the animals and that interventions were necessary. He said that rangers stood up to poachers daily in efforts to stop the illegal poaching of rhino horns, abalone and the removal of indigenous plants. Mokoena said the training programme was funded by the national departments of tourism. After completing the training, safety rangers will be stationed in all Cape Region parks. “The programme is a great opportunity, preparing young men and women to grow within the organisation and allowing them to learn new skills for the job market,” said Mokoena. He said Sanparks would tighten its relations with the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement, neighbourhood watches, police, CapeNature, and other security agencies. He also said that this measure was important to ensure the safety of the rangers because they played a crucial role in preserving and conserving natural assets that boost the economy. Mthabatha Matjila, a section ranger at Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), said that working at an open-access national park was challenging as the public did not understand the importance of obeying the rules of the parks. Matjila said such an event was a reminder that the preservation of biodiversity remained important, and that the work done by rangers should be recognised and appreciated.

THEATRE

Get a chance to kill off a character A

nyone who has attended the National Arts Festival in the past decade should be familiar with the Butlers comedy series, which promises new and exciting material in Muizenberg. The shows have enjoyed huge popularity since first being performed in 2008, with thousands of people having seen the murdermystery plays where the audience gets to decide what happens next. For the first time yet, Slick ’n Sleeve is bringing their latest “whodunit” comedy production to the Masque Theatre. Butlers and Bombshells is the new instalment of the series.

The Butlers team is thrilled to once again present patrons with a brand-new comedy where the audience’s participation has an impact on the storyline. The production shows audiences that an actor’s life can be murder! When a group of aspiring performers audition for a coveted role, dead bodies start piling up – because some people will do anything to get a big break. It’s a murder-mystery with ingenious plot twists. Plus the audience gets to kill off characters during the show. So, if you have ever wanted to kill off one or two characters along the

way, now’s your chance. Voting takes place by way of a narrator who gives choices to the viewer. Once a decision is made, the story heads in a particular direction. Anything can happen. Butlers and Bombshells is an exhilarating ride with crazy antics happening right up until the final scene. Murder-mystery theatre has never been this exciting and with multiple endings, who knows what’s going to happen? V Tickets cost R100 and bookings can be made through Computicket or the Masque Theatre at bookings@masquetheatre.co.za or 021 788 1898.

Gina Beukes takes a bow in Cape Town Gina Beukes, known for her inimitable musical style and mastery of the violin and viola, will grace a Cape Town stage for the first time in two decades on 10 August. Beukes, currently the solo violist at opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Belgium, will treat Baxter Concert Hall audience members to a unique multi-media programme entitled: Chopin, a Lover, a War and an Astronaut. The one-night-only performance forms part of the Cape Town Concert Series in celebration of Women’s Day. She will be partnered by pianist Esthea Kruger. With works for violin and viola written by or inspired by women, Beukes will take the audience on a journey from the story of Chopin’s lover, George Sands, to the first woman to go into space; with storytelling and video projections to add to the music. Beukes, formerly concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and principal second violin of the London Philharmonic and violist in the London Symphony, graduated from the Juilliard with an MMus. Kruger, a prize-winning South African pianist, was awarded her doctorate from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in Germany. She was recently appointed to the teaching staff of the South African College of Music. The concert, which starts at 19:30, is dedicated to the memory of Huberte Rupert, the philanthropist whose generosity enabled many talented South African artists to become renowned performers. V Tickets range from R160 to R190 and are available from Webtickets or the Baxter Theatre Centre Box Office on the night of the concert.

Proposals for ward allocations should be made in writing and must specify details of the project(s) including its purpose and location, as well as how these projects will benefit the community. Project proposals must be confined to municipal responsibilities and further the strategic aims of the City as set out in the IDP, Economic Growth Strategy and Social Development Strategy. The following amounts are available for grant-in-aid funding:

Luthando will be missed It was with much sadness that we learnt of the tragic death of 26-year-old petrol attendant Luthando Rangana, employed at the BP Aero Motors in Kenwyn for five years. Luthando was shot and killed in Khayelitsha on a Friday morning while accompanying a friend. Police are investigating, and no one has been arrested yet in connection with the fatal shooting. He once drove me home, saying how privileged he felt to drive a luxury German SUV. The Kenwyn Neighbourhood Watch have rallied to collect funds for transporting his body to the Eastern Cape for his funeral. The BP Aero Motors management and staff thanked their loyal customers for their overwhelming support towards Luthando’s family. He is survived by his ailing father and five-year-old son. Please contact me on markrh77@gmail.com should you wish to donate. MARK RH KLEINSCHMIDT, Kenwyn

The most expensive ‘poor’ country I wonder who the government is trying to fool? Last month the price of petrol came down, but electricity prices went sky high. The price came down just to get the attention away from the high electricity prices. Now, it’s a new month and, guess what, the price of petrol is going up. Mark my word, it’s going to go up every month for the rest of the year. One of these days we will get junk status because of Eskom. The more money Eskom gets, the more it “needs” and we, the consumers, must just pay. It’s a rip-off. Why must we pay for its mistakes every time? Why can’t it take the levy off the prices of petrol? Why can’t the government take away the water levy? South Africa is by far the most expensive “poor” country in the world. JASMINE UYS, Athlone

‘Kinky Boots’ – brilliant, entertaining musical not to be missed The 2005 Tony award-winning Broadway musical, Kinky Boots, playing at The Fugard, is absolutely delightful entertainment. The musical scores get top marks in every department: the acting, singing, choreography, direction, the storyline and, most importantly, the way it challenges many of society’s long-held bigoted views on a range of issues. The lead character, Lorna/Simon, brilliantly played by Earl Gregory, holds the show together with his outstanding singing, choreography, brilliant acting and towering stage presence. Rarely is one musical able to deal with so many contemporary issues of a sensitive nature whilst keeping you totally entertained. Kinky Boots does just that. Some of the issues covered in this fun-filled and vibrant musical are:

saving small businesses out of compassion for the loyal staff, the nonsensical views about masculinity and that transvestites are as human as everyone else and have feelings that can be impugned as anyone else’s feelings can. Musicals like these do for society what society cannot for itself. That is to challenge bigoted views but in an entertaining and subtle way. Kinky Boots is an absolute treat. Well done to the Fugard for hosting this brilliant musical and to the actors as well as the entire team that put this show together. We can be truly proud of the standard of theatre in this country. Don’t miss this brilliant musical. I might just go and see it again for its sheer entertainment and educational value. EV RAPITI, Kenwyn

The business plan submitted must have an end date.

The project should further the aims of the City in building an opportunity city, a safe city, a caring city, an inclusive city and a well-run city. Please hand-deliver the completed applications, together with the supporting documentation to Anthony Daniels, Subcouncil Manager, Subcouncil 14, Fezeka Administration Offices, corner of Govan Mbeki Road and Steve Biko Drive, Gugulethu, 7750. Help Blisters to fight pollution T

he number of plastic water sachets to be handed out to walkers at this year’s Blisters for Bread will be substantially reduced. Instead, participants are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles which they can fill up at various mobile water trailers along the route. Petrina Pakoe, director of the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), says this is one of their contributions to a more environmentally friendly community. “PSFA is extremely concerned about the increase of plastic pollution and this is our small contribution towards a global movement to becoming a plastic-free society.” PSFA will also be partnering with Sasko and various private schools in the greater Cape Town area, where the learners at these schools will be encouraged to bring bread bags to school and place them in a special Sasko/Blisters for Bread

box for recycling. The participating schools will be rewarded with books which will in turn be donated to schools in PSFA’s feeding programme. Blisters for Bread, in association with Lucky Star, takes place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 25 August. Walkers can take part in one of two routes along the Sea Point Promenade – a 10km that starts at 07:30 and a 5km that starts at 08:00. Every person who enters will receive a medal. South Africa’s pop sensations Paxton and Jarrad Ricketts will be performing live at the finish line. The entry fee is R60 per person. Each entry helps PSFA feed 24 school children with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day. Enter online at www.psfa.org.za.
