Beauty with a purpose NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
S
outh Africa’s Miss World Sasha-Lee Olivier has teamed up with Kensington-based Alexander Institute for SelfDevelopment to empower survivors of sexual abuse. Olivier was this year’s runner-up in the Miss South Africa competition and will be competing in Miss World in London on Saturday 14 December. In preparation for the contest, Olivier has launched the Beauty with a Purpose campaign, which she plans to use to help various organisations that deal with sexual abuse nationally. She hopes to bring the title home and to work with the Miss World foundation to carry the programme forward. As a start to the campaign, Olivier donated 100 comfort packs under her slogan #ItsnotYourFault to the institute at an event held at the Kensington Library on Wednesday 6 October. The event was attended by community leaders, gender-based activists, police, residents and a few learners. The packs aim to empower sexual assault survivors in the community. They contain a teddy bear – which, Olivier said, was to give a sense of comfort – underwear to restore dignity and basic hygiene products to encourage cleanliness and to give them hope that they are cared for. She said by so doing, survivors would be reminded it was not their fault that they had been taken advantage of. Olivier said the institute shared the same vision as her: supporting and empowering survivors. She challenged the community of Kensington to unite and to raise 10 000 comfort packs to ensure victims and survivors did not feel the pain of not having the basics, especially when in the process of seeking justice. A survivor of sexual abuse herself, Olivier said the worst thing one could go through was the lack of support and being failed by the justice system. Olivier said support and talks on the topic should begin at home and that children should be made aware that perpetrators
were not always strangers. They could be family members as well. Kevin Alexander was the first to accept the challenge. He was seconded by various community representatives. These included the Kensington community policing forum (CPF); Lenina Rasool, a gender-based violence activist; social workers working at local school, Helen Jacobs, the councillor for
ward 56; and religious leaders. Alexander recently launched a domestic violence abuse programme and said he was shocked to discover that there were so many women with broken hearts who longed for justice. He said, working together, the community would win the fight against genderbased violence. Erika Isaacs, the CPF chair, opened up
about the challenges faced by youth. Isaacs shared a story about her daughter’s harassment due to her sexuality. As an early development educator, she also spoke about her experience when dealing with children affected by different sorts of abuse at home. Isaacs said through collaborations like this, abuse stereotypes could be eradicated from society.
Helen Jacobs welcomed the challenge by Sasha-Lee Olivier, saying there were many people in the community who suffered in silence. She said the Beauty with a Purpose campaign would make it easier for victims to seek help. PHOTO: NOMZAMO YUKU

he annual Tears Sleepathon is a not-tobe-missed event that allows animal-lovers to get involved with the rescue, sterilisation and support of homeless dogs and cats, or those in impoverished areas. The Emma Animal Rescue Society (Tears) is an animal welfare organisation that homes, provides sanctuary for and sees to the medical needs of dogs and cats in Vrygrond, Redhill, Ocean View and Masiphumelele. The Sleepathon will be held on three consecutive Saturdays – 16, 23 and 30 November – at the Tears Animal Rescue shelter in Sun-

nydale. During the event, participants will get to curl up next to a homeless hound or cute kitty for the night, make them feel loved and also enjoy an evening of festivities. The aim of the event, according to the organisation’s marketing coordinator Luke Kruyt, is fourfold. “It’s to raise awareness, raise money – because we desperately need it – find homes for dogs and cats, and we’re always looking for volunteers,” he says, adding that the more volunteers the Tears shelter, hospital and veterinary clinic has, the more animals it can take care of. Tickets to participate in the furry fun cost R200 per person and can be bought online. Entrants can sign up as individuals, a corporate team, or as a family or group of friends. Once tickets have been purchased, a welcome pack will be emailed to recipients who are then tasked to raise funds – either through social media, by pledging donations or through the sale of goodies – in support of three causes at Tears. “There’s the rescue, rehab and rehome cause – that’s for the shelter and rescue dogs, and making sure they get all the veterinary care they need to become well-rounded and get homed. The other cause is to help to offer free sterilisations in the communities we work in. And the last is to support the welfare and mobile dog clinics which offer subsidised veterinary care,” explained Kruyt. Last year the shelter was able to raise more than R500 000 (which was highly appreciated) but its monthly running costs are currently standing at more than R1 million, due
to the fact that it services communities who can’t afford the care their animals need. This year, Tears is hoping to generate even more money with the help of the “pawsome” fundraisers. On the day they’ve booked, participants will check in at 17:00 at the shelter where they will receive much more than just 14 hours with man’s best friends. A statement on the event read: “Sleepathoners will enjoy a festive evening of celebration, live music and socialising in a chilled and comfortable space. One of three gourmet plantbased meals, hot cocoa and s’more kits are on the menu for dinner and everyone is encouraged to bring sleeping bags and camping gear, as well as snacks and treats to make their sleepover as memorable as possible.” Participants will be able to choose a special fur baby they feel a connection with, or they will be allocated one. According to Kruyt, the cattery can accommodate about 15 to 20 people and the dog kennels can take about 80 to 90; adding up to about 360 people who can participate over the three Saturdays. The only downside, according to Kruyt, is saying goodbye at 07:00. “It’s very emotional in the morning,” he said. All funds raised will be used to assist the shelter with its various programmes. “The more funds you raise, the more animals you will help,” the Tears’s statement read. Platform to support women NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
H
ow realistic is the saying: “it’s not about what you know, but who you know”? Two Woodstock-based businesswomen are creating a platform for women to meet so they can empower each other. Andrie Graham, director of Nieu Jacket Consulting (NJC), and Tasneem Khan, founder of Colab Training Solutions, will be hosting a Businesswomen Networking Event at the Colab Training B103 Woodstock Exchange at 66 Albert Road on Thursday 21 November. About 40 women will be accommodated and will be encouraged to interact with each other from 07:30 to 10:00. The duo says connections and networking are crucial to remain on top of trends and developments and to ensure opportunities are unlocked for both big corporates and small businesses. The event is aimed at start-ups, established businesses, corporate workers and anyone looking for inspiration in order to contribute to the economy. “We want to ultimately build a network
of women, to inspire and to expose them to new trends and possible opportunities to grow their businesses. “Despite the slowdown in South Africa’s economic growth there are still a lot of opportunities in our country and specifically in our province. We have great people with a passion for business and an entrepreneurial flair,” says Andrie. Tasneem is a new entrepreneur and says she learned her business skills the hard way – by working with other people and taking advantage of collaborative initiatives to build a brand. She wants to help other women understand how a business is built and to know that it is okay to ask for help. With her experience, Tasneem realised that successful business people are reluctant to do business with start-ups and young knowledgeable entrepreneurs as “they believe you only have theory to offer, but no experience”. She encourages women to take advantage of this platform and form a support system for each other. V Tickets cost R180 and are available at Quicket: bit.ly/2NjrJf1. A Halaal breakfast will be served and there will be a lucky draw open to all guests.

SAFE SPACE FOR KIDS: A Shine Literacy Room was launched at St John’s RC Primary School in Kensington on Friday 1 November. The room was sponsored by a top clothing retailer and has been placed next to the school’s new library, forming a literacy corner. Now the school will have Shine Literacy volunteers delivering the Shine Literacy Hour Programme to Grade 2 learners, helping them improve their skills. “We are extremely grateful to the sponsors who choose to invest in our school, as this enables us to offer more opportunities to our learners and the wider community, says Suzanne Beck, a teacher and chapter manager at the school.

I try to do it more often, but sometimes, I run out of ingredients. If we could all reach out to these children, we would be able to make a difference and help keep them at school,” says Davids. The ingredients for sandwiches include jam, peanut butter, polony, cheese, eggs, tinned fish, bread and for the cooked meals, she needs chicken, potatoes, rice, vegetables and gas for the stove. She says children struggle to learn if they are hungry. “I give from the heart. We must feel each other’s pain and reach out. “Thank you to everyone who makes every meal possible,” says Davids. City land sale approved T
he vacant land in Pine Road and Dillon Lane in Woodstock will be sold for the development of social housing. The City of Cape Town approved the sale on Thursday 31 October. The parcels of land are more than a hectare in size and could accommodate up to 240 social housing units. The land will be transferred to the Social Housing Company (SOHCO) at R4.3m, a fraction of R43m market value. The City says the discount is necessary to make the project financially viable for SOHCO. The City says the deeds of sale are expected to be concluded at the end of this month.
Construction could start in mid-2021, with a completion date in late 2022. Malusi Booi, Mayco member for human settlements, says this is a complex journey but the City will continue to assess Cityowned land, including land in and near the Cape Town CBD and other urban centres, to determine whether they will be suitable for housing. “We are beginning to rewrite the story of our city. We are grappling with the same spatial inequalities that other South African cities are also working on, and this is all happening against a background of high rates of urbanisation and much pressure on urban centres and governments,” he says.

A
s the Kensington-based Independent Women’s Empowerment Bond (Iweb) wraps up its year of activities, its co-founder, Wiedah Gabier would like to thank everyone who supported her initiatives. Iweb runs several programmes to support women, children and the elderly. Mentioning Iweb’s recent highlight, she says: “Firstly we need to thank God and each
one that made our seniors event a major success. Iweb could not have done it without our sponsors. We started our first Muharram (New Year’s event) with a few seniors and children from Kensington, Factreton and Al Noor Orphanage in Woodstock at Shawco Hall.” Its most recent event was a senior’s outing at the Katzenberg Estate in Pella on Saturday 12 October where senior citizens received treats and enjoyed a day away from their homes.
Galima Khan, Anwar Abrahams and Fatima Damon enjoy the outing organised by the Iweb.
Seniors enjoy the bus trip to the outing at the Katzenberg Estate in Pella.
Wiedah says: “Iweb gave them a savoury breakfast box, lunch, dessert and a cake box and the eldest seniors from 83 years and up received handmade luxuries.” She says the elders were between the ages of 65 and 102 and all enjoyed the day. Farouk Hassen from Steenberg says the senior’s day was a success. “Wiedah, this year you definitely deserve first prize. I don’t think we expected the incentives. I know everyone had a fabulous day, especially the senior citizens from Steenberg.” Farouk also thanked everyone who supported Wiedah. Another grateful elder is Soraya Johnson

State of the Art Welding Academy for the College of Cape Town By Zukile Ncapayi, Manager: Corporate Communications and Marketing College of Cape Town t is an African belief, that rain during a ceremony or significant event symbolizes a c k n ow l e d g e m e n t , b l e s s i n g s a n d endorsement of the Ancestors (Gods). During the College of Cape Town's official launch of the Welding Academy, the heavens opened and blessed the event to mark the beginning of a new era in Welding. The launch was held on Friday, 25 October 2019, the state-of-the-art Welding Academy is at the College's Thornton Campus, this was made possible by an R3.5 million funding from MerSETA. The project took about a year to complete, it is fully equipped with the latest machinery and equipment on par with industry requirements and standards. The College is currently in the process of applying for accreditation with the International College of Welding to offer Above: Cutting of the tape by MerSETA Regional Manager for the Western Cape, International Welding Diploma. The College will enrol the first Welding 30 students in 2020, with a planned three intakes a year. The facility is set up with individual working cubicles for each of the 30 students to be enrolled at a given time. The facility boasts an improved powersaving ventilation system, air suction for each welding station can be individually switched on and off. The welders will be skilled in four different types of welding – gas, normal arc welding, TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding and MIG welding. MIG and TIG welding are both electrical arc welding processes but are used for different materials. MIG welding is used for thicker, heavy-duty welding while TIG welding is used for thinner pieces of metal. Welding is one of the scarce skills in South Africa, with many qualified welders being imported from outside South Africa. It is envisaged that with this Welding Academy, companies such as Eskom will recruit qualified welders within the Borders of South Africa. This will also help alleviate poverty and decrease unemployment, especially amongst the youth. The Welding Academy will also help bridge the gap, between Institutions of Higher Education and Training and

We can play our part in public safety Crime statistics recently released by Police Minister Bheki Cele should serve as a reminder to all South Africans to remain vigilant in their daily lives. We need to be prepared to encounter an element of criminal activity when we leave our homes. The brave men and women of the SAPS are doing their best to arrest criminals and prevent crime, but you and I can also make a difference. Public spaces carry a range of safety challenges that we need to be prepared for. These include parking garages, parks, shopping centres, and other places where large groups of people provide easy cover for would-be criminals. In public spaces you should leave the expensive items such as jewels at home. If you have a daily walking schedule to and from the mall, vary it often so that your movement does not become predictable. If someone stops you to ask for assistance, keep a safe distance from them and keep an eye on movement around you. Avoid drawing money from an ATM late at night, and if it is urgent rather consider going to an ATM in a well-lit space where a security officer is on duty. Leave the headphones at home. Anything that causes distraction is to be avoided. There is safety in numbers. Take a friend with you, so that you can look out for each other. No one likes to think about crime. Sadly, it has become a reality of life that we have to be prepared for. The best gift we can give is to ensure the people we care about know how to possibly avoid crime in public spaces. Musical’s message shared with 350 youth This weekend I took 350 youth from areas across Cape Town to see the David Kramer musical, Danger In The Dark. The message of this musical has important lessons for the youth, especially those living in communities where crime and violence are challenges. Danger In The Dark remains relevant as it covers themes of domestic violence, gangsterism and drug abuse. There are many city programmes which work to address these challenges and we hope the youngsters who see this show will be inspired to make positive choices in their life, be aware of the dangers of making the wrong choices, and instead work hard to succeed at their schooling and life. David Kramer’s Danger in the Dark is a rework of the hit musical Poison, which he and the late Taliep Petersen wrote in the 1990s. The story takes place in 1995 on the Cape Flats when Pamela meets up with Juanita, a friend from her school days. She realises that Juanita is trapped in an
abusive relationship with a drug lord and she is determined to help her friend leave. Pamela is drawn into dark and dangerous places and situations, yet she pursues against all odds for the safety and survival of her friend. One of the ways the City of Cape Town is addressing substance abuse is through the Matrix programme. The City has recently opened its eighth clinic in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein. The other sites are Tafelsig; Albow Gardens; Delft South; Town 2, Khayelitsha; Parkwood; Ruimte Road, Manenberg and Eerste River. For the last financial year, 2 258 screenings were conducted at the City’s matrix sites with the clean drug test rate for clients at 83% during the same period. The treatment is free of charge. Those struggling with substance abuse can access help. Please contact 021 444 8444 or email: matrix@capetown.gov.za. DAN PLATO, Mayor of Cape Town
Youth must think of their futures The youth (aged 15 to 34 years) accounts for 63.4% of all unemployed. The Siyakha Youth Assets Study shows 54% of those who had been involved in youth programmes remained unemployed. The study, released at the University of Johannesburg in June, found only 27% of
those who received training were able to find work. The study, published by the Centre for Social Development in Africa, followed youth who went through the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, Lovelife groundbreakers, Fit For Life Fit For Work, Thabiso Skills Institute,

Efforts to resolve taxi challenges In an effort to resolve challenges facing the taxi industry, I held an intergovernmental workshop on public transport with the City of Cape Town. The workshop follows my commitment after a meeting with the leadership of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) last month where we addressed challenges facing the taxi industry including the issuing of operating licences for minibus taxis, metre taxis and the issue of identification of e-hailing. In preparation for a formal consultation with the taxi industry, the province and the City clarified processes and procedures around the issuing of operating licences and other related matters. Considerable progress was made which will enable me to take the matter forward with the taxi industry. I am committed to finding amicable solutions within the ambit of the law to ensure that people are transported to work safely and improve efficiency in the minibus-taxi industry which contributes massively to our economy. BONGINKOSI MADIKIZELA, MEC: Transport and public works Raymond Ackerman Academy, National Youth Development Agency, YouthBuild Programme, Afrika Tikkun Training Services and EOH learnership programmes. It noted an increase in the odds of youth seeking work. The class of 2019 must develop their potential to become entrepreneurs. MARK KLEINSCHMIDT, Ward 60 councillor

Cape Town voted one of the world’s most beautiful cities Cape Town has come in at number seven on Flight Network’s list of the World’s Most Beautiful Cities for 2019. The list of 50 best cities in the world was compiled by Flight Network, a Canadian online travel agency. Cape Town remains one of the most beautiful cities in the eyes of the world. We are humbled that Cape Town has been named as the best location on the continent and hope travellers continue to see Cape Town as a must-see destination. More than 300 000 job opportunities are supported by the local tourism industry. Accolades such as these are important in sustaining the interest from the international community. The tourism sector has the biggest growth potential, and awards like these are necessary in helping to support our tourism stakeholders. According to the list, the top 10 most beautiful cities in the world are: Paris (France), New York (USA), London (England), Venice (Italy), Vancouver (Canada), Barcelona (Spain), Cape Town (South Africa), San Francisco (USA), Sydney (Australia) and Rome (Italy).
The reviews and opinions of more than 1 000 travel writers, bloggers and travel agencies from all across the globe form the basis of the list. The only other African city to make the list is Marrakech (Morocco), which comes in at number 46. Cape Town is also competing in three categories in the World Travel Awards. Cape Town is currently the holder of the World’s Leading Festival and Events Destination title. Cape Town was again voted Africa’s Leading Festival and Events Destination for the second consecutive time at the recent Africa and Indian Ocean World Travel Awards in June this year. Table Mountain won the title of Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction and Cape Town International Airport won Africa’s Leading Airport. All three contenders are up for the prestigious world titles at the 2019 World Travel Awards. The voting period closed on Sunday (10 November) and the winners will be announced in Oman (Middle East) on Thursday 28 November. DAN PLATO, Mayor of Cape Town

Red-hot action excites fans R
ed-hot action filled the track at the Killarney International Speedway at the weekend with the final and deciding round of the World Rallycross (World RX) championship. In the end, Sweden’s Timmy Hansen was crowned as champion on account of a count-back of wins over Norway’s Andreas Bakkerud. The Cape Town crowd was treated to a spectacular and bruising season finale as the two ended on even points, with Bakkerud second in the race behind winner Niclas Grönholm and Hansen in fourth behind Timur Timerzianov after 60 races in 10 countries on four continents throughout the year. Timmy (Peugeot) arrived in Cape Town just a single world championship point clear of title rival Bakkerud (Audi) and younger Hansen brother and teammate Kevin another five points back in third. After the qualifying rounds and semi-finals, Timmy’s championship lead was only two points, with just the final left to race and eight points on the table. Timmy started the final from pole position from Bakkerud, Grönholm, Kevin, Timur Timerzianov and Timo Scheider as the
top six lined up two-by-two to decide the world championship over six scintillating laps in sweltering heat to the backdrop of Table Mountain. Bakkerud made a perfect start to lead from a combative Timmy, but the three world championship contenders became embroiled in a controversial incident, when Timmy made a move on Bakkerud and the two tangled and went off as Kevin also went off in avoidance at the bottom hairpin. The upshot was that Grönholm led the way from the recovered Bakkerud, Timerzianov and the similarly recovered Timmy, who had made quick work of a struggling Scheider to take a vital fourth place. Kevin then had a second spectacular incident at the same corner where he, his brother and Bakkerud had collided on the opening lap, as Grönholm led a disgruntled Bakkerud, Timerzianov and a limping Kevin home after Scheider ground to a halt. “It sounds fantastic — almost unreal that you call me world champion,” Timmy responded to a question on his taking the title. “I am super happy for the sport - the last race with everything on the line was nervewrecking, but I kept focussing and deliv-
ered a strong performance race by race through the weekend — there was no room for error — not the smallest mistake. “I know Andreas is upset,” said Timmy. referring to the final race incident. “I went for the inside, it was a hard move and it still needs to be investigated, but this season is the best in my career with four race wins and now the title — it’s a dream come true and I am so happy for the team — we are first and third in the drivers title with Kevin and me and we are makers champions too — the car has been brilliant every race. I still can’t yet take it in!” “I am proud of myself — I won the battle today — the best reaction at the start to lead away,” Bakkerud admitted. “But unfortunately I will not comment more after what happened and I just want to say huge thanks to my team and our sponsor and to everyone else — especially Cape Town — it was fantastic as always — Thank you South Africa. For the rest, right now I don’t really care.” In other action, Swede Oliver Eriksson delivered a dominant RX2 victory over Jamaican Fraser McConnell and Sami-Matti Trogen, to wrap up that title over Ben-Philip Gundersen, who pipped Jesse Kallio to
the title second, while Zak Groenewald took local BMW E36 Cup honours. Also Shaun Cope won the front-wheel drive class in his VW Golf and rally lass Megan Verlaque took Speedcar buggy honours. Locals like Saadiqah Alexander of Belgravia lapped up the action. “The family is all into drifting, that’s how we grew up. My father has a Honda S2000 and a Nissan 350Z, so we are into cars. We always come watch. So we have been here a couple of times. We just watched all the rallies, we liked the BMWs,” she said. South African motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe was also in attendance: “It is wonderful having a world championship in South Africa in motorsport. I think it is the most exciting form of motorsport anyway, because there are so many good drivers,” he said, adding that he wished World RX was around during his competitive racing days, and implored locals to keep supporting the event in the future. “They should just know that it is one of the most exciting events in the country, so I don’t know why they just don’t pitch up.”
