itchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and the Cape town CBD are the top three Western Cape areas listed for both hijacking and theft according to the latest tracking and recovery data. Local tracking service, Tracker released their vehicle crime statistics for the period July to December 2019 which notes an 18% decrease in the number of theft and hijackings reported nationally during December compared to the five previous months. This trend is consistent year-on-year, with an 18% decrease in December 2018 and a 21% decrease in December 2017. In the Western Cape, for hijackings, Khayelitsha ranks first followed by Mitchell’s

Plain and then the CBD. For vehicle theft, the CBD ranks first followed by Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain. The data was compiled from the company’s more than 1.1 million installed-vehicle client base. The statistics provide insight into vehicle theft and hijacking trends, including the time of day and day of the week when vehicle crime is most likely to occur. Even though – according to the country’s crime statistics for 2018/19 – Cape Town, Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha police stations are not among the national top 30 police stations with the highest reported cases of car theft, they do have the highest number of incidents reported in the Western Cape. Furthermore, according to the police crime stats, the three stations feature on several other crime lists, including murder,

community reported crimes, attempted murder and rape. Nandi Canning, Tracker spokesperson says: “Our statistics reveal that these three communities make up almost 6% of Tracker’s national and 57% of the Western Cape’s vehicle theft and hijackings reported from July to December 2019.” The statistics for the same period in 2018 reveal the same three communities as hotspots, however, Canning says this could change. “These areas are the most prevalent crime spots in the Western Cape, based on system-generated data. However, hotspots can and do change, so we encourage people to be vigilant wherever they go,” she says. Three days have been identified on which incidents will most commonly take place. V Continued on page 2.

Rocklands civic centre has been closed for maintenance ahead of the upcoming state of the province address (Sopa) and opening of provincial parliament later this month. The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department identified Rocklands civic and other facilities in need of repair at the beginning of the financial year but decided to fast-track the roof replacement following the announcement of the Sopa set to take place on Thursday 20 February. “The department decided to bring forward the dates for the work at Rocklands civic to ensure that the venue would be ready for the Sopa,” says Mayco member for community services and health Zahid Badroodien. “(The replacement of) Rocklands civic centre’s asbestos roof has been on the department’s plan since 2017, due to the rate of general wear and tear issues raised as the roof depreciated. During last year’s winter rains, it became apparent that the facility had to be prioritised due to the health and safety hazards caused by the leaking roof. This had been less apparent in prior years due to the drought when there was little to no rain.” The cost of removing the asbestos roof and installation of a new roof is just shy of R2 million and is set to be completed by Monday 17 February. “The repairs are scheduled to be completed in time for the Sopa,” says Badroodien. However, an ongoing early childhood development programme and two events have already needed to be moved to Westridge civic centre and no bookings will be accommodated before Friday 28 February.

hile entries for this year’s Slave Route Challenge have been closed, interested participants can still submit their applications online. Organisers have extended the online registration to Friday 14 February, with the main run taking place on Sunday 23 February. This year’s run also marks 10 years since the race’s inception. The event caters for the avid runner or walker and novice with a half marathon, 10km run, 10km walk and 5km fun run/walk on offer. The added appeal of this event is that it takes ownership of the country’s past, changes the narrative of South Africa’s heritage and transforms it into a legacy for future generations. The route starts in front of the City Hall, in Darling Street, right in front of the balcony where the late President Nelson Mandela made his first speech after his release from Victor Verster Prison. Runners and walkers get an opportunity to see some of Cape Town’s breathtakingly beautiful views including District Six, the Company Gardens, Bo-Kaap, the Castle of Good Hope, the Hurling Swing Pump, SA Jewish Museum, Slave Bell, Dorp Street

Mosque, Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Gallows Hill, the majestic Atlantic Seaboard, Fort Wynyard, Prestwich Memorial, Iziko Slave Lodge, the Slave Tree Plaque and Palestine Museum. The run will finish on the Grand Parade where the Whipping Post used to be. Each year the race has a commemorative medal and a race beneficiary. Last year the race beneficiary, Mary Harding, received R65 000. This year the race beneficiary is Lofob – League Of the Friends Of the Blind. Lofob is based in Grassy Park and was established in 1933 as a registered non-profit, public benefit organisation serving the needs of blind and visually impaired children, youth and adults, and their families, throughout the Western Cape and further afield. Dr Armand Bam, CEO of Lofob, says: “We are proud to be associated with the Slave Route Challenge Powered by Brimstone. Our rich heritage as an organisation serving those most impoverished and the significance of this race as a reminder of our country’s history, makes this a significant celebration. We are proud to celebrate 10 years of meaningful impact together with this event.” V Log onto www.slaveroute.co.za for the route maps.

Some of the ecstatic runners make their way through Darling Street during last year’s event.

CARNIVAL RETURNS: The Cape Town Carnival will celebrate a new decade with its 11th annual parade on the Fan Walk on Saturday 21 March. People’s Post is an official media partner. Expect to see and hear sounds of South Africa through the incredible journey told with mobile floats and 2 000 performers.

Ladies Senior Club will host a week away to Club Mykonos from Friday 30 October to Friday 6 November. The trip costs R2 500 per person, and a non-refundable R500 deposit secures your seat. The bus will depart from Mitchell’s Plain only and the pick up point is in AZ Berman Drive, behind the Mitchell’s Plain Police Station. For details, call Una Davids on 083 687 4154.

FROM PAGE 1 Most vehicles are hijacked or stolen on a Saturday throughout South Africa. This is followed by Thursday and Friday for hijackings and theft, respectively. “Most hijackings are reported between 20:00 and 21:00 followed by 12:00 and 14:00, on any day of the week, while theft of a vehicle is reported between 11:00 and 14:00,” says Canning. Regardless of the day, the police crime statistics indicate there were 138 hijackings in Khayelitsha, 45 in Mitchell’s Plain and 21 in the CBD. The stats also reveal there were 271 vehicle thefts in the CBD, 169 in Mitchell’s Plain and 91 in Khayelitsha. Mitchell’s Plain police have also noted an increase in carjackings recently. “We have noted an increase in the reported cases of carjackings in Mitchells Plain. Most of these incidents have occurred at the Mnandi Beach area,” says Mitchell’s Plain police spokesperson, Capt Ian Williams. “These incidents have mostly occurred at night while people were parking at the beach. In some instances, victims have been forced off the road or forced to stop. We have had reports of bricks and branches placed in the road to create an obstruction, forcing motorists to stop.” The reported cases indicate groups consisting of two to four men with firearms is the modus operandi. Motorists are advised to be vigilant and avoid becoming a victim of vehicle crime this year. . Make sure your vehicle has sufficient fuel and is properly maintained to prevent a breakdown. . Plan your routes in advance to try to avoid high-risk areas and the distraction of having to check directions while driving. . Keep valuables out of sight in the boot or under the seats. . Remain vigilant at all times – criminals are relying on you being distracted and vulnerable. . Know your emergency numbers. . Always be aware of your surroundings. . Don’t park in isolated, dark places. . There is safety in numbers – try to go in a group. . Trust your instincts – if you don’t feel safe, then move away quickly.

Premier talks safety SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121

I

n keeping to his campaign promise to address communities and safety in the province, premier Alan Winde hosted a meeting at the Northwood Hall on Monday 3 February to share insights on the Western Cape Safety Plan. He was accompanied by provincial ministers for community safety, Albert Fritz; social development, Sharna Fernandez; subcouncil 23 chair Elton Jansen and ward councillors from the greater Mitchell’s Plain area. Winde hosted a similar meeting in Tafelsig in September and decided to host a second meeting in

New Woodlands on request from residents. Residents from areas all over Mitchell’s Plain attended the event to hear more about the plan and raise their concerns. Winde says safety was and is a core issue for his office. “One of the main aims was to create jobs and I am extremely proud that the province makes up 14% of the country’s economy and we created more jobs than any other province,” says Winde. This was up to 75% of all jobs created in South Africa, which was created in the Western Cape. Winde says when he became the premier candidate, he saw it as a major opportunity and thought

about what he would need to do if he was elected. “The most important thing for me was creating more jobs and how I could create more jobs in our society,” says Winde. “Then I started thinking about the barriers and I had no doubt the biggest barrier to the whole of our society in the province and in the country, is crime.” Winde continues: “It does not matter where you are, you can be the richest or poorest, it doesn’t see any difference, it affects us all. Of course, crime affects people in different geographic areas more than people in other geographical areas.” Since his election, Winde has worked in collaboration with ministers in his cabinet to develop the plan. “Every minister has a component of safety in their mandate,” he says. While the plan has been officially released, it is still a working document. “This will remain a working document forever because what works in one area may not work in another and it is through community engagement that we can find these solutions,” says Winde. Core to the plan is the deployment of additional law enforcement officers to assist the police and community engagements to determine the most suitable approaches to fighting crime and other challenges.

FENCING ISSUE TO BE ADDRESSED:

Saturday 29 February

Vandalism has been an ongoing problem at many schools, in particular at Alpine Primary School. Over the December holidays, 31 schools in the province had been vandalised. Member of provincial parliament, Ricardo Mackenzie recently wrote to provincial education minister Debbie Schäfer following the recent incidents. “(The department has) sped up the required infrastructure upgrades for the school,” he says. Mackenzie also met with school management following the appointment of a contractor who will erect the fence. The fence should be completed by April. “I urge the community, particularly those in the surrounding areas to assist in keeping an eye out for potential looters, thieves and alert the principal, neighbourhood watch and police as soon as they see something untoward, particularly after hours and on weekends. We as a community need to stand together against those that want to vandalise and destroy infrastructure. The learners at the school deserve to study in peace and the fence will contribute to keeping vandals out but we all have to assist where we can.”

V Portlands: The first elimination round of the Mitchell’s Plain’s Got Talent competition will be held at the Portland Indoor Centre from 15:00. ore than 100 representatives from partner organisations to the Mitchell’s Plain police station attended an inter-denominational dedication service, aimed at strengthening their relationships. Representatives attended the service held at the Beacon Valley Baptist Church on Tuesday 4 February.

Pastor Dean Ford

Organisations represented include walking buses, street and block watches, neighbourhood watches, the community policing forum, Safer Schools, victim support, YMCA, non-government organisations and government departments. Other partners unable to attend include the national department of justice, departments of social development, community safety, City law enforcement units and correctional services. Spokesperson for the station, Capt Ian Williams, says the initiative is aimed at thanking the partners for their dedication

and strengthening the cooperation for the year ahead. “The heart of the matter is a matter of the heart,” says Williams, stating it is only through partnership that they can see a positive change and reduction in crime. Various ministers shared inspiring messages and a prayer for the officers and volunteers as they continue to fight crime in the precinct. The event included songs of praise and worship and a rendition of the national anthem, followed by the reading of the police code of conduct.

SWARTKLIP BEACH | EASTRIDGE

Foundation keeps caring SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121

C

hildren spent time giving back to the marine community with a beach clean-up at Swartklip beach recently. The event held on Saturday 18 January marked the start of the We Desire To Inspire (WDTI) foundation’s Kids Club environmental project. “We adopted the Swartklip beach where we spent two hours cleaning. This will happen every last Saturday of the month,” says WDTI Foundation founder, Edries Davids. “We went to the beach with the kids over the Christmas holidays and noticed how dirty our beaches are, and we want to teach

them by cleaning the beach you contribute to looking after the marine life.” A total of 35 children attended the event. The foundation is a registered non-profit company. The kids club was started to keep children occupied and away from negative influences. The club has around 70 children who attend weekly events and initiatives. Davids says they are calling on sponsors to assist them in making this possible. “We are looking for sponsors for black bags and two taxis to take the children to and from the beach for the clean-ups,” says Davids. V Anyone who would like to donate or sponsor can call or message Davids on 078 048 3940.

Several bags were collected during the two-hour clean-up.

Easy tips to get a head start on selling your home If selling your home is on your to do list this year, you will be pleased to know that the first few months of the year are traditionally an excellent time to hit the market. Not only are the early summer transfers starting to filter through to the deeds office, properties are also showing their sunny sides and buyers are happy and motivated. David Jacobs of the Rawson Property Group says there are several ways sellers can make the most of this seasonal opportunity. These are his four top tips to hit the new year’s property in peak form:

Get your home in market-ready condition “All of us homeowners tend to have a list of little chores and repairs that are

not necessarily life-changing or urgent when you live in a property, but make quite a big difference to its overall appearance and outward condition,” Jacobs says.

Get a selection of valuations from experienced real estate agents “Experienced real estate agents will use this information to provide you with a comparative market analysis along with their valuation.” Find the right agent to market your home Getting a selection of valuations done on your home is a good way to meet a few different agents, but Jacobs warns sellers not to be lured into handing over a mandate based purely on the highest bidder.

Record breaking day to remember

or the 51 945 people who made their way to Cape Town Stadium on Friday 7 February for the Match In Africa, it was a day which will not be easily forgotten. The figure, a new world record attendance for a single tennis match, also helped contribute to the $3.5 million (approximately R54.6 million) donated to the Roger Federer Foundation, which will be used to support education in rural South Africa. The amount of money also surpassed the figures achieved in the previous five editions of this event (known previously as the Match For Africa). The tennis match between 20time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and his great rival, 19-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal, almost took a back seat, which saw the duo on a whirlwind tour of the City, starting with Federer’s arrival in Cape Town on Wednesday 5 February, and included an impromptu warm-up session between the two on the Grand Parade. Preceding the match on Friday, both Federer and Nadal also took part in a play ses-

sion with children from Hangberg Pre-primary School in Hout Bay. The aim was to teach the children through various physical activities, combining language, motor skills and perception. Following his practice session with Nadal, Federer reminisced on his previous visits to South Africa, which is his mother’s country of birth. “I don’t remember playing here in Cape Town 20 years ago, because I was on vacation and you rest your body. When I was little, I was playing in Jo’burg and other places where I was travelling. I remember I got a racquet from my parents here when I was little. After all this time it has gotten to this and to play in a stadium like this it is beautiful and my mom is very happy right now.” Federer would go on to team up with Bill Gates in a celebrity doubles match against Nadal and his partner, Trevor Noah, which was won 6-3 by Federer and Gates, who dubbed themselves “Gateserer”. The result was of little consequence as the four kept the crowd entertained with witty quips as they had themselves mic’d up for the crowd and audience at home to listen in on. “At the end of the day I think doing things

Falcons claw their way back NOORE NACERODIEN Falcons fought back to earn a 7-7 draw with Glenthorn A’s in a Cape Town Softball Association (CTSA) women’s Super League encounter at Turfhall softball stadium on Saturday 8 February. Glenthorn A’s quickly put favourites Falcons on the backfoot with a forceful batting display in their first two turns at bat scoring six runs. Lisa Erasmus, Lynn Lekay and Courtney Stevens each batted 2-2. It was left to Falcons veteran Lindsay Vercueil and youngster Tonique White to cross the plate in the bottom of the second innings and set the tone for an exciting game. Falcons set the diamond ablaze in the bottom of the sixth innings to take the lead

for the first time. The Falcons offence was led by stalwarts, Samantha Jones (2-3) and Bettina Phillips who cleared the cones for a two-run homer. Meanwhile, Westridge Yankees are keeping up the pressure on leaders Lavender Hill with a close 5-4 victory over Kenfac Phillies. Yankees kept Phillies at bay, who threatened an upset in the fifth innings when they registered 3 runs to close the gap on Yankees and level the scores. Jenna Moses’ 2-run circuit clout had the Yankees in a spin. Nathalie Abrahams, the Yankees pitcher, reached first base courtesy of a Cassandra Kalpens’ error and eventually crossed the plate for the match-winning single. Lavender Hill maintained their lead with an easy 9-2 victory over lowly placed Tantasport. Khayelitsha Eagles kept the pressure on Westridge Yankees

together, this is actually in a way what we are doing tonight, we are all getting together for a good cause and to see what comes out of it. If I am alone out here, I cannot fill a stadium, but with the three other guys I can,” Federer said before the match. Tickets to the event were sold out within 10 minutes and Federer said he’s open to collaborating for future charitable efforts. “It is important to share information and to see where the synergies are and how we can do things together. At the end of the day, we are all seeking the impact, not for personal glory or legacy. We are here to leave a profound impact on kids’ lives and if that happens that we can do things together and we know each other and we get along, it is a winwin-win.” Federer would go on to beat his great rival Nadal in three competitive sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, but the result was of little consequence as the cause outweighed any performance. “Just one of these days that you don’t forget. Super happy to be playing here in Cape Town for the first time in my life. I can’t thank the people here in Cape Town who came to the stadium and created an unforget-

for the men’s Major League title with another important win over Pirates in midweek. Hamiltons, multiple champions over the last few years, is not far behind and should not be written off as the season draws to an exciting close. US college tour a success The week-long visit by the Gustavus Adolphus College from Minnesota, USA, ended in success for the students. After suffering a defeat in their first game against a CTSA Invitational team, they beat a CTSA u.23 team midweek and ended their tour on a high with a 6-2 win over a Western Cape Invitational team. table atmosphere and made this day even more special. Super happy to see Roger’s emotions out there. I know how important it is for him playing here and having this amazing success,” said Nadal. After the match, Federer was still coming to terms with the emotional occasion, which exceeded his expectations. “I was very emotional when I walked out for the doubles and when I had to take the mic right away there, that was hard. I did not know what to say because I really felt overwhelmed with emotions there. After that, I was able to play a bit of tennis and when I came back for the singles, I was more in a place of pure happiness, enjoying every single moment and looking around and thinking how lucky we are to experience this. I hope it gives the city, country and continent and mini-boost. It is never on the same scale of what Siya (Kolisi) and their team did with the Rugby World Cup, but it is nice to have nice stories in a world that can be very tough and cruel sometimes. That I was part of maybe people having a wonderful evening, having a great braai at home and watching this game, that would make me happy.”
