ne grave mistake will follow Mogamat Faried Guyan for the rest of his life but he is not letting it get the better of him. Convicted of murder and sentenced to prison in 2005, Guyan from Tafelsig has turned his life around. “This incident happened in 2002. I shot someone in self-defence and in 2005 I was sentenced to 15 years for murder,” he says. Guyan was the owner of the licensed firearm used in the shooting. His sentence stipulated that if he handed in the firearm and had his license revoked, his sentence would be reduced by five years. While Guyan has served his time in prison, the severity of his crime means his record cannot be expunged. “I went to Pollsmoor Prison first and from there I went to Drakenstein Prison. This is where I started in the workshop,” he says. Having previously worked as a mechanical fitter, Guyan felt right at home in the metal shop where he soon started to learn more about carpentry and bricklaying. “At the workshop, I did sheet and metalwork. I saw how they made the lockers and other metal items. From there I learnt the carpentry trade to increase my knowledge and did construction carpentry to learn how to build a house from scratch,” he says. Because of his background, he would go on to teach and instruct other prisoners. But when he was paroled in October 2010, he was faced with the harsh
realities of life and how hard it would be to find work as a former convict. “When I got out, I could not find a job because of my criminal record. I worked here and there, doing odds and ends,” he says. His criminal record could have held him back but instead, he used his skills in welding to start his own business. “I can do any welding. I had a skill already and I honed my skills while in prison. I was an instructor in prison. Some could not even read. But I had knowledge when I went to prison and I could teach,” he says. “I made a mistake. A big mistake. If I had just walked away none of this would have happened but to defend myself I shot him. I had to go to prison based on the gun law. I accept I’ve done wrong and I had to serve my sentence. It was hard but I had to accept it. I did wrong. I apologised to everyone and I was accepted when I came back. There was no problem for me coming home. I am free.” Guyan, who grew up living in Tafelsig, remembers the area as being very different from how it is today. “I was an aggressive guy when I was younger and this incident has taught me to rather observe and walk away. When I was in prison, I attended crossroads and restorative justice classes. In the class, they asked people who their role models were and people would say people like Mandela and so on. The facilitator was so clever, he gave us a mirror, told us to open our eyes and see who our role models are. I am my own role model, no one else. You may want to be another guy but you will never be another person. You must be your own role model and I learnt to do that,” he says. V Continued on page 3.

The gangsters of Cape Town seem to be among the smartest people around. They constantly manage to outwit the police, metro police, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the department of community safety, the South African justice system, criminologists, politicians, sociologists, lawyers, psychologists, social workers, and even other top academics from the universities in the city. This is in spite of the fact that many of them did not even progress past Grade 10 at school. Whereas all these entities and specialists are still trying to figure out how to use resources such as computers and related technology more effectively, gangs seem to have it all figured out in their activities. The efforts of all these institutions to help make neighbourhoods safer, are indeed applauded and greatly appreciated. Given the apparent low impact of these efforts however, some key questions need to be
asked. Would a contracted private antigang unit have had much greater success than government institutions in the fight against gang violence? Are drones and satellite technology already employed in fighting gangsterism? Can artificial intelligence technology be more effective in the analysis, prevention and fighting of gang-related crimes and violence? Unlike studies regarding disease, one has yet to see reports regarding the incidence and prevalence of gangsterism in gang-ridden communities. How many people in a particular area, are actually gangsters? What are their age groups, gender, sources of income, and even their occupations? What are the main streets in which they operate, the main houses and buildings from which they operate, what are their crimes, key targets and target areas? Besides drugs, what are all the root causes of their gangsterism? To what extent are families protecting their gangster relatives from being criminally prosecuted? Far from being a conservative estimate, profiling key areas such as
Respect patient’s privacy
Thank you for the interesting read on gangs
Western Cape government health has a people-centric approach in providing healthcare, including managing people under investigation for Covid-19 (Coronavirus). As per protocol, upon presenting to a health facility, patients are managed and taken to a dedicated space for management. We note this cannot happen immediately and does draw the attention of other patients. Please note that we cannot divulge any information on any of the people coming to our facilities for health services and screenings. We appeal to the public to refrain from speculating about the status of these patients and afford them the necessary privacy. We also appeal to people who are not sure if they have Covid-19 to call the public hotline on 0800 029 999 as they will be guided on the correct channels to follow. I would like to thank People’s Post for the very interesting read on the gangs and gang culture in Cape Town. I showed it to my young sons hoping the ex-gangsters’ stories would help them realise how dangerous this is and keep them further away from that life. As parents, we try so hard to teach them to do the right thing but we have very little

Manenberg for example, will reveal that less than 0,1% of teenagers and adults are actually gangsters. Even other similar communities also need to be aware of the fact that they are actually being held hostage by less than 0,1% of their residents; i.e. by just a small fraction. If existing laws can be changed to ensure more severe punishment for women and child abusers, why can the same not be also done for gangsters; given the fact that gang-related crimes has also become very frequent and more lethal? Why can they not be detained for periods of detention without trial, in forced military labour camps? If people can be ordered to pay compensation for discriminatory utterances and actions on social media and in the public domain, why can the seized assets of gangs and gang leaders not also be used to pay compensation for the innocent victims maimed and killed by gangsters? Would these not serve as further deterrents against gang activities? G. CONTALDI, Tafelsig

PENNED BY A JOURNO
Stop asking ‘when’ A
s a relatively newly wed, I am constantly being confronted with the question: “when?” I don’t even think it is necessary for me to explain what I am referring to, as this question and constant bombardment resonates with any and everyone despite their age, race, background, life experience or relationship status. If you are not in a relationship: when? If you are in a relationship and not engaged: when? If you are engaged and not yet married: when? If you are married without kids: when? When you have a kid, for number 2/3/5/10: when? And the list goes on. And on. And on. And on. As a society, it seems we are incapable of minding our own business. And at this stage I’m not sure what to say in response anymore. Most often I resort to a humorous or sarcastic reply. “Don’t plan my womb” is usually the go-to. But then I started thinking about it a bit more and realised that while I am not sure if I am even able to have children or not, there are many women out there who have been confirmed infertile. And naturally also some who simply do not want to procreate due to family history, personal preference, crime, careers or whatever other reason they have. Side note, yes, they are entitled to this choice. Now think about this: a woman who longs for a child, who is incapable of conceiving her own and cannot afford the process of adoption. I am sure this is a heartbreaking
tiles
realisation for any person. Then you, busybody, come in hot with that stupid, insensitive and quite frankly inappropriate question of “when?” Some would never admit this is their situation and to be honest, it in any case is none of your business. I mention this because should this happen to you – and the likelihood of this happening is very probable – apologising and standing with egg on your face will not remove the hurt you inflicted on the women already battling to come to terms with this. And all in a bid to make small talk. I was raised with the phrase, “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. And now I am telling you, asking “when” is not a conversation starter, it is not a topic up for discussion and if you ask me again, just one more time, I might slap you with a “WHEN are you going to stop being an insensitive prick and mind your own business”? And on top of that we should stop accepting that older generations should be allowed to say and do as they please, based purely on their age. We smile and shrug it off when in fact this is completely unacceptable. If you really are desperate to start a conversation with someone, ask them how they are doing, talk about the weather or ask them what exciting things are happening in their lives. Leave the “when” and the “you-got-fat” conversation starters for the bottom of the barrel . . . but that’s another story for another time. -Samantha Lee-Jacobs

FROM PAGE 1 “I learnt my lesson. I came out of prison with not a tattoo or mark on my body. I did not join a number. “There are guys who were with me who are now pushing trollies. They became numbers but no one bothered with me because I would observe I was not interested in gangsterism. I was very strong. When I went in, I made it clear and it made me stronger. There were a few hiccups but I survived,” he says. Guyan soon realised that if he wanted to
make a living, he would need to do it himself. “It is difficult to find a job because your criminal record follows you but as an artisan, you can employ yourself,” he says. He has been commissioned to make just about everything – from beds and gates to fixing and welding broken-down cars. “It is about creating your own opportunities. Any welding work, anything that people need, I do for them. I made many gates in the street and I also fix cars if need be. I want to teach kids and get them off the streets. If there is a place that I can use to teach children, I would love to do it,” he says.

Among those present were Islamic faith leaders, pastors, members of the neighbourhood watches, community policing forum, police and the local ward councillor, Joan Woodman.

men damaging and removing essential rail infrastructure, and in possession of presumed stolen copper cables. At about 06:30 the members responded swiftly to information of unknown suspects who are removing the copper cables from the Mitchell’s Plain railway line adjacent to 7th Avenue in Eastridge. The men are aged between 23 and 42. On arrival at the scene, officers found two men in possession of a large quantity of copper cables next to the railway line. The members followed up further on information which led them to a nearby street in Eastridge where a further three suspects were found in possession of copper cables. The officers confiscated approximately 120 meters of cantenary and overhead copper cables. The copper cables have an estimated street value of R80 000.

The Western Cape will look at alternative energy to stem load shedding in the province.PHOTO:

ith the dreaded return of load shedding following a decently long break, residents of the Western Cape could breathe a sigh of relief should plans to become energy independent go ahead. In his State of the Province (Sopa) address in February, premier Alan Winde stated the province’s commitment to creating its own renewable energy. This followed president Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that municipalities, who are capable of doing so, are at liberty to generate their own energy. “At the top of our list is finding alternatives to the number one hand brake on economic growth, and also a huge frustration for all of us – Eskom,” said Winde at the time. “Load shedding makes me the most angry when I hear of its effect on our small businesses. When stage six hit us on Monday 9 December it was a harsh awakening, and we have to be brave enough to admit to ourselves that we aren’t in for a quick fix.” Winde continues that the province has been calling on national government for several years to make a number of energy reforms. In his State of the Nation Address (Sona) on Thursday 13 February, Ramaphosa said Eskom’s capacity would be increased through renewable energy, natural gas, hydro-power, battery storage and coal. This undertaking could take between three and 12 months, said Ramaphosa. He
further warned residents that the likelihood of load shedding would continue as Eskom continues to battle constraints. “It has severely set back our efforts to rebuild the economy and to create jobs. Every time it occurs, it disrupts people’s lives, causing frustration, inconvenience, hardship,” said Ramaphosa. “At its core, load shedding is the inevitable consequence of Eskom’s inability over many years – due to debt, lack of capacity and state capture – to service its power plants.” While the steps are welcomed by the provincial government, Winde said he had several concerns surrounding the generation of power. “The Western Cape has worked hard in recent years to develop the framework to support alternative energy: 23 of our municipalities support Small Scale Embedded Energy, we have promoted the uptake of solar PV, and we have done a large part of the groundwork required for the importation of Liquefied Natural Gas. As a province, we are primed to take advantage of the excellent economic opportunities that green- and alternative energy present for investment and growth,” said Winde. “We are fortunate, especially in the Western Cape, to have some of the best solar and wind resources in the world, and we have the ability to become the emerging market leader in renewable energy.” The province has a four-point plan to making this a reality. . Municipalities will be assisted in procuring energy from Independent Power Producers. “Procurement in the government space

is complicated and time consuming, so we will ensure that there is dedicated support to speed up a more robust procurement process,” says Winde. . Small Scale Embedded Generation like Solar power across the province will be increased. . The greening of government buildings across the Western Cape will be increased. “Where there is a government rooftop that can benefit from solar, it will be installed. We already have solar systems on 17 provincial buildings,” says Winde. Municipalities across the province are being supported and encouraged to make similar investments. . Importing of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) through Saldanha Bay will be fast tracked which enables Eskom’s Ankerlig plant to operate on LNG rather than the much more expensive diesel. “Our work has already de-risked these initiatives, and we call on the national government to move with speed to bring LNG to our industries and power plants in the Province. Gas to power may also make sense in Mossel Bay,” says Winde. “A petrol company is also already exploring offshore gas there, and while the outcome is several years away, we are starting the work now to make sure that we are able to maximise the major economic advantages which gas provides.” While wind and solar resources are plentiful in the country, says Winde, adding that there is a potential for six times more generation. Local departments are already looking at ways to implement this in the province.

CAPE TOWN CARNIVAL
Pandemic halts this year’s parade A
group of 40 learners from Strandfontein Secondary School meant to participate in this year’s Cape Town Carnival will have to wait a little bit longer to showcase their skills following the cancellation of the annual event. The carnival was scheduled to take place on Human Rights Day, Saturday 21 March, on the Green Point Fan Walk. However, following president Cyril Ramaphosa’s address to the nation over the Covid-19 virus pandemic and measures that have been introduced to curb its spread, organisers have decided to call the carnival off. “In consultation with our stakeholders,
the trustees and management of the Cape Town Carnival resolved to cancel the carnival parade in the best interests of the health and welfare of all people and particularly the communities we serve,” a statement from the organisers read. “We would like to thank the 44 community groups, the individuals performers, and the carnival staff that have worked tirelessly to prepare for this event.” Prof Rachel Jafta, chair of the Cape Town Carnival Trust, said: “My heart goes out to the carnival communities and management tea that have worked so hard to make this year’s parade extra special. Don’t lose hope; we will be back. We thank our sponsors and

suppliers for their understanding in these uncertain times.” Jean Prinsloo, principal at Strandfontein Secondary, says the school is the only high school in the Strandfontein community and “is a beacon of hope for a mixed community that has a few informal settlements such as 7de Laan and Plasie.” The group, featuring 40 learners from Strandfontein and suburbs like Pelican Heights, Pelican Park, Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha and Nyanga, was meant to showcase their parade, Umswenko: Move to Your Own Beat. Umswenko was originally expressed by miners as a way of celebrating life beyond the hardships of day-to-day work, using song, dance and fashion as a way out of their grim reality. In its new incarnation, it is once again enlivening a group of people in difficult circumstances, giving them a sense of purpose, joy and unity. “We’ve been practising rigorously for about a month now, sacrificing intervals, practising after school, and even doing
three-hour sessions on a Saturday,” says Judith Simmers, one of the choreographers. Led and choreographed by Simmers, Fadley Hamsa and Merissa Schrikker, the group had evolved quickly into a safe place of fun, friendship, laughter and brilliance. Keeble-Mercuur, who would have been a participant, says there’s a buzz among the learners that wasn’t there before, and that the many hours of practising and togetherness have enabled the children to build new friendships, keep them out of harm’s way, and open their minds to new possibilities. Recalling how it all started, Keeble-Mercuur tells the story of how a teacher, caught up in “the gees and magic” of being a part of the 50 000-strong carnival crowd before; “ran right along the parade route, next to the floats and through the crowds.” “I think, for her, and for us, to see the absolute joy, pride and confidence on the bright young faces of those passing performers, spotting some of our very own learners shimmying in the belly dance, was something to behold and we as a school just had to get involved.”

Lavender Hill wins big NOORE NACERODIEN
T
he Cape Town Softball Association season ended with an exciting week of softball. In the women’s Super League Knockout (KO) competition, Lavender Hill won their first major trophy when they beat Westridge Yankees 3-2 in a riveting final at the Turfhall softball stadium on Sunday 15 March. The outcome is the first major title won by the young Lavender Hill team. With the score locked at 2-2 from the second innings, the match went into an extra tiebreaker inning. Yankees failed to score in the first tiebreaker innings. However, Lavender Hill had other ideas and sealed the game when Kelsey Fortuin crossed the plate courtesy of a Melissa Savage hit to right field after Fortuin was advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Grivonne Rhoda. Just 24 hours earlier, Yankees put the skids on Lavender Hill when they ran out 6-1 winners to retain the league title. As expected, both sets of pitchers contained the batters throughout the two games. In the men’s major league KO final, Hamiltons scored four runs in the
seventh innings to clinch a famous victory over Westridge Yankees. Hamiltons managed only three hits in their first six innings. Marc Quickfall’s double set the stage for a superb batting display by the Hamiltons offensive with Altino Elliott adding another double. Yankees failed to respond. In the league competition, Khayelitsha Eagles failed to beat Pirates allowing Yankees to clinch the title at the finish line. Yankees had a good day at the ballpark when their men clinched the second division KO and their women’s major league team clinched the Lavender Hill’s Miché Hendricks (left) double at the expense of Table View celebrates with Melissa Savage after Tornados.
