“We have robberies and small crimes like car break-ins but not murder,” the man says. Cecil Libbe, chair of the Community Policing Forum Subforum for Portlands, says the only other shooting incident he can recall happened about two years ago in Miami Way. “This is not normal and it comes as a great shock to the community of Portlands. People are not used to shootings like some other areas. There is a fear that gang elements from Westridge and other areas will move into the area and that this will become a gang-ridden area,” says Libbe. He agrees that petty crimes take place and that serious crimes are not common. Libbe confirms the house was known as a drug house where users would frequent. “We would visit this house on many occasions as part of our sweeps in the community. This incident is so sad,” says Libbe. “Many of the problem houses that we have in Portlands is because parents pass away without a will and testament. These are good families,” he says. Libbe says the woman who was shot is from the area and known in the community. The three men are believed to be from the Westridge area. Libbe pleads with residents to assist the subforum in taking a stand and keeping crime at bay. “Our humble plea to residents is that they join the safety structures. If we have six people in one street we can win the battle against crime,” he says. The house is now empty with a pile of clothing, bedding and mattresses removed from the home in a pile in the front yard.

These three men were caught on CCTV cameras at the time of the robbery.
ore than 130 000 TOPEs were sold at Pick n Pay during the 2019 Sunflower Day campaign, raising R3.9 million to help fight blood diseases like leukaemia through the recruitment of stem-cell donors. The retailer was the first to join forces with the Sunflower Fund 16 years ago – for what was then known as Bandana Day – to help increase the number of critically needed donors on the registry, especially in South Africa. Every year TOPEs are sold in stores, culminating in Sunflower Day on 20 September, to raise awareness and funding for the Sunflower Fund. “This year’s contribution of just under R4 million is testament to the difference each one of us can make. The fact that the sale of one little item like this can generate some-
thing of this magnitude is incredible. We’d like to thank every customer, school and corporate who joined to help make 2019 Sunflower Day the success it was. It wouldn’t have been possible without you,” says Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, director of transformation for the retail giant.
Accepting the donation, Alana James, chief executive officer (CEO) of the Sunflower Fund, said that the store has been instrumental in helping raise funds, and in giving the fund such remarkable and ongoing support. “This is making a real difference in giving the hope of life to so many people.”

he Democratic Alliance (DA) has retained ward 82, winning with more than 60% of the valid votes cast. According to the official results released by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), only 23.94% of voters participated in the by-election, held on Wednesday 13 November. The number of voters who registered during the voter registration drive held in the area at the end of September was 15 941, this

is less than the number of voters who registered for the 2019 provincial and national government elections. Of the almost 16 000 registered voters, only 3 817 votes were cast across the six voting stations in the ward. Of these, 3 783 votes cast were valid, with 34 spoilt ballots. All six stations only had participation of between 19% and 27% during the 12-hour election period.
Results . Washiela Harris – DA: 2422 votes (64.02%) . Paul Anthony Daniels – Good Party: 492 votes (13%) . Grant Jeremy Claasen – African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP): 441 votes (11.66%) . Chester Arendse – Independent: 179 votes (4.73%) . Marie Jeanette Olifant – African National Congress (ANC): 144 votes (3.80%) . Jaques Brinkhuys – Independent: 61 votes (1.61%) . Phila van der Heever – Cape Party: 18 votes (0.48%) . Sandra Shirley Poleman – Democratic Independent Party (DIP): 12 votes (0.32%) . Mogamat Sedick Gabier – Independent: 11 votes (0.29%) . Daniel Peter Petersen – Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF): 3 votes (0.08%). Aside from the independent candidates who have not contested an election before, all parties represented in the 2019 municipal by-election for ward 82 showed significant drops in percentages of votes received. Harris of the DA was officially elected ward 82 councillor obtaining 64.02% of the vote.
IEC official Zoliswa Carol Dolweni was on duty as an inker for the election. She is pictured inking Jerome Adams’ thumb ahead of his vote.

Blue flags for two local beaches SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121
S
trandfontein Pavillion and Mnandi Beach have retained its Blue Flag status heading into the summer season. The beaches join nine others including Muizenberg, Clifton Fourth Beach, Llandudno and Camps Bay. Blue Flag status is an international accreditation awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education and is a certification that a beach meets its stringent standards. There are 33 judging criteria which include standards for quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management.
These criteria and others are judged over four categories. “The City is honoured to once again be part of the Blue Flag programme, with 10 of our beaches making the cut. The Blue Flag beaches are geographically well-positioned around the metropole,” said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien in a statement. “These beaches are visited by thousands of residents and tourists every year and the City is making sure that they are of a high standard.” Renecia Hendricks, a Strandfontein resident says she grew up visiting the beach. “We were not lucky enough to have access to other beaches growing up and I
remember December holidays we would pack a cooler box and our towels and blankets and head to the beach,” says Hendricks. “Some may not want to come to this beach because it is too local for them but I enjoy coming here and bringing my grandchildren now. There are some things they can improve here but the beach is clean and it serves the same as other beaches.” Grassy Park resident Mark Petersen says many may pull their noses up at this stretch of coast and opt to visit Strand or Muizenberg beaches. “For me, it is a privilege to have a beach so close to home. I am 15 minutes away from a beach. Why would I want to drive between 30 minutes and an hour to
visit a beach just because of its name? The beaches are all the same and Strandfontein has a lot to offer, including parking which is a problem at other beaches,” says Petersen. Peter Paulsen from Tafelsig says Mnandi Beach and the resort are in walking distance from them and that makes it convenient. “Many think it is not safe, but there is lots of security and law enforcement at the beaches when it is busy,” says Paulsen. Fellow bather, Rushni Hayes from Rocklands says it is a short walk from where they live. “I remember coming to the resort on surf walks and when it is hot we still take a walk to the resort,” says Hayes.

Adopt a water safety mindset at the beach For most Capetonians, summer holidays are all about the sun and the sea. But there is another word starting with an “s” that should be at the top of everyone’s list: safety. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) urges the public to adopt a water safety mindset around coastal and inland waters this festive season. Craig Lambinon, spokesperson for Sea Rescue, says the number one rule for a safe experience at the beach, is to choose a beach that has lifeguards on duty and to swim between their flags. “If you do that, you don’t need to worry about rip currents, or suddenly getting out
of your depth. Putting an arm in the air and waving for help will get a rapid response from the lifeguards on duty,” Lambinon says. For various reasons, people regularly swim where there are no lifeguards on duty. This is when things can go wrong. “In a typical scenario, Sea Rescue gets an emergency call for a swimmer in difficulty. When we get there, we find two or more people in danger of drowning. Tragically, sometimes we are not able to get there in time and someone drowns,” he says. Lambinon says the person who does not survive is often the one who went into the water to help the person in difficulty. “Sea Rescue launched our Pink Rescue
Buoy project in November 2017. These bright pink rescue buoys are hung on strategically placed signs. If there is an incident and someone needs help these buoys can be thrown to the person in trouble in the water,” he says. The emergency number for the closest Sea Rescue station is printed on these signs. Lambinon says the safest thing to do is to call Sea Rescue if they see someone in trouble. “If anyone decides, against advice, to enter the water to try to rescue someone first call Sea Rescue and then use the rescue buoy to provide flotation for the casualty.” Have a plan in place in the event of an
emergency: . Make sure you have emergency numbers saved on your cellphone. In an emergency, dial 112 from any cellphone. Or Google Sea Rescue or NSRI for the closest Sea Rescue station’s telephone number. . Check the wind, weather and tides before going to the beach, fishing or boating. . Tell someone where you are going and when you are due back, and make sure that they know your route, your intentions and who to call if you don’t return on time. . When climbing on rocks or fishing from rocks, never turn your back on the sea. Rock anglers must wear a life jacket and know when spring high tide is. . If you are paddling or if you are on a boat, before you launch, download NSRI’s free SafeTrx app – http://www.nsri.org.za/ safetrx.

he Strandfontein National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) duty crew was activated on Sunday 10 November at 13:22 following reports of a drowning in progress at Fishermans Walk, west of Strandfontein Pavilion. The sea rescue craft GrandWest CSI and Film Industry Fund Rescuer One was launched to search in the surfline. NSRI rescue swimmers, City of Cape Town lifeguards, City law enforcement, provincial government health emergency medical service rescue squad, Cape Town fire and rescue services, the fire dive unit and City traffic services responded. A search commenced for a 15-year-old Belhar boy, who reportedly went missing in the surf while swimming. NSRI rescue swimmers and City lifeguards conducted sweeping line free dive search efforts in the surfline. Despite an extensive sea and shoreline search, the teenager could not be located. The search was continued by police divers. Also on Sunday at 14:28, NSRI Strandfontein crew, City lifeguards and emergency services responded to Sonwabe Beach coastal park, where a woman was reportedly in difficulty in the surf. On arrival, it was found that the woman was saved by a a bystander. The woman was treated by paramedics for non-fatal drowning symptoms and transported to hospital in a stable condition.

The 41-year-old former South African international has played at one Junior World Championship, three senior World Championships, one Commonwealth Games and has toured overseas on 11 different occasions. Molaba is renowned for his winning run in the 2000 World Series in East London. But now, even as his energy has shifted mostly to coaching, Molaba could be set to add another golden moment. “By accepting the invitation, we will continue to strengthen the relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles and the Sweden Softball Federation,” he said. Locally, Molaba coaches the Eagles Men Thuto Makolomakoe, Terence White and Moses side and the Falcons Molaba.

he relationship between Khayelitsha Eagles Softball Club and the Swedish Softball Association took another positive turn recently. Moses Molaba, Thuto Makolomakoe and Terence White were guest players for Sweden in the European Masters Softball Cup played in Barcelona, Spain. They were invited by their local Swedish player, Karl Heljm, who plays for Eagles as part of an agreement between the two organisations. The men’s edition of this tournament consisted of eight teams from six different countries. For the round-robin phase, the teams played in two groups. Denmark All Stars and Magos Tenerife remained undefeated in their group, thus securing the first two spots in the winners’ group. Runners up, with both one loss and two wins, were the Israel Stars and Capitalinos Gran Canaria. Magos Tenerife remained the only undefeated team throughout the event and deserved the title. “The experience of playing in this event was great,” said Molaba who has vast experience in the international softball scene.
