Academy gives hope LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
T
he Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy, which began in 2013 with one student receiving informal music lessons in a living room, today tutors 170 students. Trevino Isaacs, principal of both the academy in Mitchell’s Plain and the Kraaifontein Academy of Music, grew up in New Woodlands.
The academy, which tutors students from the northern and southern suburbs, aims to train, educate and empower those that do not have the means to pay for training at established institutions. Its mission is to provide high-quality yet affordable music tuition to all students. “We want to give the community hope with one vehicle being music,” he said. According to Isaacs, the high demand for lessons necessitated a move to a
bigger space. “Lessons are now offered at Woodville Primary School,” he said. Isaacs said they started out teaching piano, drums and the base guitar. Students come from as far as Tokai, Heideveld and Ocean View to attend the academy. “We expanded to the northern suburbs about a year and a half ago to accommodate more people,” Isaacs said. “Students from
Brackenfell and Parow attend lessons at our branch in Scottsville, Kraaifontein.” He said although many people still don’t know about the academy in Kraaifontein, awareness is growing. “We are all about working in the communities and are there to shed light on music,” he said. Isaacs is self-taught and started playing instruments at the age of nine. V To page 2.

Since the 1980s Margaret Voogt (83) from Blomtuin, Bellville, has dedicated her whole life to serving her fellow man and community – and is still doing it. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers. “I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home. She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do. “I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries. “Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect second-

ROCKLANDS
Bringing fashion to the community LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
T
wo Rocklands residents have decided to create a platform to bring local designers to Mitchell’s Plain. Steven Corolus and Angelique Johannes, who work as visual merchandisers and stylists, are hosting the first Mitchell’s Plain Fashion Show on Saturday 5 October. Corolus said they first attended a show in Khayelitsha and they saw how the community supports each other. “We wanted to
start this in our own community so that local designers can showcase their work and learners can model in the show.” He said it was very important for them to showcase local designers and use people from the community. The designers come from Mitchell’s Plain, Elsies River, Athlone and Varkensvlei and the learners attend Cedar and Rocklands high schools. He said it wasn’t difficult to find local designers. He got in touch with them by sending WhatsApp messages to various designer
Adrian Gertse, Robin Stroud, Jamie Steenkamp, Solome Ncube, Diego Blignaut and Shameerah Mia.
groups. He said it was also important for them to create this platform because people who have graduated from fashion schools are forced to work in retail following graduation because they don’t have a platform to showcase their work. Corolus said although it’s difficult to organise the show while maintaining fulltime jobs, they remain focused and are excited about producing the show. He said they also decided to present the show because sometimes children may feel misunderstood when dressing boldly or differently. “Growing up in the community where dressing differently was not a good thing, we have felt the urge to encourage individuality and expressing our identity through fashion.” He said he wants to bring fashion to the community and show people they can be bold and stand out. “Our aim for the show is to inspire the youth to be themselves, be unapologetic in who they are and stand out from the crowd; and to help give a platform for local designers and models in our community,” he said. He added they are using these learners in the show to create a positive impact in the community. “With everything that is happening in the area like gangsterism, we want to keep the learners off the streets and they are excited to be part of the show.” He said they also decided that they are going to push through for the next fashion show next year. There will be a special performance by Chelsea Firelily and the emcee will be comedian, Arlene Petersen. Any donations are welcome including water and food for the models on the day

Gymnastics keep kids off the street LISA LOTTERING @demilottering
T
he Eastridge Community Gym Club is home to many talented children in the Mitchell’s Plain community. The club offers ballet and gymnastics to the children. Coach Zubeida Daniels and two volunteers accept any child that wants to learn gymnastics and ballet. Daniels said there is a beginner’s group where the new learners are exposed to the sport. The gymnasts are also given the opportunity to go for trials for the Western Cape Gymnastics Association.
“This keeps them off the streets and busy,” she said. According to Daniels, every day is different. She said it’s hectic but you need to have a passion for it and these are talented children. “There’s a lot of criminal activity,” she said, adding that they have to endure shootings and gangsterism. “But we get there.” Daniels said when the club competes at competitions no one will know that they hardly have equipment or practice due to the circumstances. “We might not have equipment, but we do the best that we can,” she said. According to Daniels they always make a plan no matter what. “We beg and we borrow. If we don’t do it, the children will
turn to gangsterism, loitering or prostitution,” she said. She said it’s all about what they are doing for the community in the community. “It’s about keeping the children off the streets by doing gymnastics.” She said gymnastics can make a difference in the community. “If we give up, there will be nothing left for the children. I must keep it alive. I’m too scared to give up on them. I’m almost 65 but what’s going to happen to the kids?” She said she wants to keep gymnastics going but they can’t do it alone and need the assistance of the community. The club will
be competing in the South African Games on Thursday 26 September at the University of Cape Town. The gymnasts have also been invited to perform at the Baxter Theatre in October. “We will be exposing them to the Baxter Theatre, some children have never been outside of Mitchell’s Plain but now they can perform at the Baxter,” she said. She also said the schools in the area assist with donations but the club still needs gym mats, costumes, gym equipment, rhythmic balls and any other donations. like a normal boat, that takes about a week to build, these took them four months each to complete. Selwyn de Wet, City’s marine principal officer, says having custom made boats aim to accommodate the nature of the work done by the marine staff, providing them with safer and faster models. He says one of the key components in the new boats is the anti-burst that prevents the boat from sinking when stroked by sharp objects or shot at. It also has advanced anti-fire protection. After a couple of rides, the City officials were satisfied with the quality and performances of the boat. They vowed their readiness to tackle the “critical” poaching problem and reducing the number of fatal incidents during peak season. Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith says fighting poaching is critical, and with the new addition to their fleet of rubber ducks, this unit can further expand their reach. He says these boats are lighter, stealthier and can cut through “choppy” water and waves, making chasing down poachers easier.

her learners as Mummy, lives in Strandfontein and has been teaching learners at Levana Primary School in Lavender Hill for 11 years. She began her long journey in education in Lavender Hill at Prince George Primary School where she taught for three years, following which she moved to Marine Primary School in Ocean View where she worked for 24 years. Having become a well-known figure in each of the schools she taught – and the communities at large – she said: “I was like a mother figure to them. They come and they hug me, and sometimes even give me a little kiss.” She notes that the children have made her experience as a teacher great, but adds that another highlight of her time in schools has been her appointment to a position that she feels very passionately about. “The highlight of my 40 years is that I became chairperson of the Health Promoting Schools (an international health-promoting concept introduced in Western Cape schools in 1995) and I’ve always believed that your health is your wealth,” she said – a lesson she teaches the children. At her emotional farewell assembly attended by alumni from the school, Levana Primary School’s principal, Andre Lamprecht saluted the long-standing teacher. Grade R learners read a poem for her, saying: “This is the end of working for someone else and the beginning of living for yourself. “We’re wishing you all the best.” Joy Benjamin, also a teacher at the school, wished Bailey all the best on her new journey. “You’re starting a new chapter in your life and we want to wish you everything of the best. We once again want to thank you for your warmth and your kindness, for everything you’ve done and left for us here, and we love you lots. Enjoy your retirement, you deserve it,” she said. In closing, Bailey told those at the gathering: “I am very sad to leave you all, but I am tired and I need a break.” She told People’s Post that she will always be there for her learners and colleagues, despite her retirement and she plans to continue to serve in the future. She plans to make a trip to Thailand midyear next year to visit the elderly, hoping to put smiles on their faces by letting them know they are loved. “My mum was bed-ridden so I know what it means to them for us to just be there. I’m also going to speak to the youth and get to the roots of their problems – but I’m also going to take a lot of me-time,” she said.

TOURISM MONTH
Learners educated about industry T
ourism Month focuses on one of the most critical sectors in terms of its economic investment and job creation opportunities. According to a statement issued by James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities, they are focusing on schools to educate learners on the importance of the tourism industry. He visited Sea View Primary School in Mitchell’s Plain, and schools in Langa and Khayelitsha on Friday 13 September. “We took the opportunity to inform learners of career opportunities available to
them should they decide to choose tourism as a livelihood,” said Vos. He accompanied several representatives from leading hotels in Cape Town on a Curated Routes Tour. “I made use of the opportunity to highlight and showcase an array of cultural experiences in Khayelitsha,” Vos said. According to Vos, the visit gave the representatives an opportunity to interact with inspirational people, including artists, baristas and start-up business owners, while creating the opportunity for ‘tourism-prenu-
ers’ to display a range of diverse activities.” The tour reflects the core focus of the recently revised Tourism Development Framework (TDF), which is to create more community-based offerings. The City is taking an immersive approach to cultural tourism and aims to change the local landscape by embracing diversification of tourism experiences. According to Vos, this will give momentum to the City’s objective to facilitate sustainable job creation to help establish more ‘tourism-preneurs’ while transforming the
tourism landscape in Cape Town. “I also accompanied executive mayor, Dan Plato, on a trip up Table Mountain to celebrate that Table Mountain was recently nominated for the Leading Attraction in Africa award category.” Vos urges all proud Capetonians to vote for #LoveCapeTown. “Cape Town is a beautiful city and I am truly excited about the future of tourism and exceptionally proud of what we have to offer,” Vos said. V To vote visit www.worldtravelawards.com.

resident Santika Naidoo (21), a graduate of the College of Magic and a member of its voluntary teaching staff, wants to change. “Too many girls grow up thinking the only avenue open to them in the magic and illusion industry is that of the ambiguous tempt-
ress, standing on the side. But they don’t want to be the one just holding the props or even being the prop. So they begin to believe magic isn’t for girls.” Naidoo, director of the college’s latest production World of Magic!, is living proof that nothing is further from the truth. The full-time Arts in Film and Television, Psychology and Organisational Psychology student is in her final year at the University of Cape Town. She says her participation in the college’s six-year training programme played a huge role in her decision to pursue a career in entertainment. “The college offers a range of courses. One of them is theatre production which focuses more on the technical side, for example, editing and lighting. My training taught me so many skills and it opened my eyes to the opportunities in the industry.” She says the understanding of how to create a guided and immersive experience is one of the greatest lessons taught at the college. “Modern technology and social media have caused us as a society to become distant from one another. But people still crave that feeling of being connected, of being immersed in the moment. With the knowledge I’ve College of Magic’s entertainers performing at Artscape gained, I hope to create that hoPHOTO: ANDREW KLAZINGA listic experience for audiences.”
So, for her, the reward for heading up this new show as its director is twofold. Besides crafting a magical journey for audiences, she also has the chance to transform the roles of women in the male-dominated magic industry. “We specialise in making the impossible possible at the College of Magic. Having spent years training under the tutelage of strong female magicians, I relished the opportunity to help our young girls find their own voice and performance styles.” The show’s diverse cast features some of the Mother City’s exceptional entertainers, illusionists, clowns and jugglers, all between the ages of 10 and 19. It promises to whisk the audience through a fantastical world filled with illusions, magic, hilarious antics and fun-filled fantasy. When Naidoo and her then codirector, Michelle Gore, were given the task to put together the production at the beginning of the year, they decided to recreate that sense of childlike wonder. Gore withdrew from the project in August to pursue her PhD studies in atmospheric sciences at the Tenn State University in the United States of America (USA). “By taking the audience on a journey through the different worlds of magic, the show reminds you what it felt like when everything was still new and exciting; when your desire to explore was bigger than the fear of the unknown,” says Naidoo. Catch the show at the Artscape Theatre on Sunday 6 October at 14:00 and 16:30. Tickets are R165 with discounts for family bookings available. Book at Computicket. Strong melodies, sensitivity and improvisation at play Shannon Mowday, a celebrated jazz soloist and composer, masterfully blends sounds of Africa and Scandinavia in her production, Lila for one night only at Jazz at the Nassau. The Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Jazz (2007), has united musicians with whom she has worked since moving to Norway in 2009, each with a very unique musical identity. The production’s musicians include Mowday (soprano, alto, baritone and bass saxes,
bass and contra-alto clarinet, composition), Helge Lien (piano), Johannes Eick (sixstring acoustic bass), Erik Nylander (drums) and Asle Karstad (sound design). Supported by Norway Music, Lila had its debut performance on the Oslo Jazz Festival this year, followed by performances in Norway and South Africa. Through the art of spontaneous “play”, the musicians seek to find both common ground in expression and also explore be-
yond borders of musical genres or expectations of style. Mowday’s playing is a combination of power and high energy juxtaposed with sensitivity. Her unique compositions reflect her travels, her South African roots and extensive musical experience; drawing from nature, folklore, life experience and also presenting important issues for social discourse. Catch Lila on Sunday 29 September at
19:30 at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School, Palmyra Road, Newlands, Cape Town. As there is only one performance in Cape Town, it is suggested to book early, as seating is limited. Tickets cost R150 each. Students pay R50. V For more information or to book tickets, call Cliff Wallis on 021 761 2726 or 076 401 0008 or email cliffwallis@gmail.com. Home is where the heart is A
dream came true for 40 elderly residents who were handed their historical title deeds at the Athlone stadium on Monday 16 September. Some of them have been waiting for more than 20 years. The recipients hail from areas such as Wallacedene, Langa, Atlantis, Joe Slovo, Kleinvlei, Wesbank and Mfuleni. One of the elated recipients was 79-yearold Paul Oostenhuizen, a resident from Beacon Valley in Mitchell’s Plain. The acting Mayco member for human settlements, Felicity Purchase said the City is making every effort to expedite the handing over of title deeds. “There are various challenges which delay the handover of historical title deeds,” said Purchase. “These houses were handed over to beneficiaries as far back as 20 years ago, during a previous administration, where at the time, the priority was the construction. The performance targets did not include the delivery of the actual legal transfers.” She added delays can be due to the misalignment of erf numbers to the housing sub-
sidy system, the fact that some of the beneficiaries are difficult to trace; and determining lawful and illegal occupation of houses can also provide problems along the way. Mayco member for urban management, Grant Twigg said the event was the City’s way of empowering residents who were previously denied access to property ownership. “The handing over of title deeds allows homeowners to live in dignity in a home that they can call their own. It is an investment that will grow in value that becomes an asset for the homeowners and their loved ones,” he said. He added there is no greater pride than taking care of a house that a person can call their own and turn it into a home. Twigg added the issue of housing and the well-being of senior citizens is of utmost importance to the City. “Today, many families still live as tenants or without ownership rights in houses they have lived in for generations. “Handing over the title deeds is a way in which the City is able to rectify the injusti-

ment to building a caring city. “Owning a home for many residents is something that they only dreamed of. We are pleased to be part of turning the dream into a reality,” he said.

the oncology ward and a playroom in the surgical ward – on Wednesday 18 September. The rooms offer children, and parents, a safe space to go and escape from their clinical surroundings. Big Concerts and Reach For A Dream joined forces to create the first of these rooms in Cape Town children’s hospitals. Heidi Rowley, Western Cape branch manager for Reach for a Dream, says here the children can have fun, read, play and focus on activities that entertain and stim-
ulate them. “Eventually, there will be 30 such rooms “When I am asked what it is that drew me at hospitals which provide critical care to to working with children, I tell people that children with life-threatening illnesses betheir joy and their resilience is driven by tween the ages of three and 18.” their sense of wonder, all too often forgotRowley says the foundation aims to take ten in adulthood,” says Prof Alan Davidchildren out into a new environment with son, head of haematology-oncology at the their families to create “dream experienRed Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospices”. tal. “But for those who rely on constant treatDavidson was speaking at Reach for a ment and observation, it’s impossible to Dream’s formal handover of two new step out of the hospital, which is why the “Dream Rooms” – a revamped day room in Dream Room concept is so important,” she explains. Justin van Wyk, chief executive officer of Big Concerts, and his wife Karen say the Dream Room initiative is close to their hearts. The promoter of live entertainment events has supported the foundation since 2015 when it made two children’s dream to attend a One Direction concert come true. But the Van Wyks’s involvement became a lot more personal when their daughter, Annabelle (5), was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of three and a half. “We had just moved into our new home. Adrian (now 7) and Annabelle were so excited about having their own rooms for the first time. Then Annabelle was diagnosed. A day later, she was admitted to Red Cross hospital. We went from this warm and fuzzy environment to a clinical one, just like that.” Mitzi Franken, head of nursing at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Justin van Wyk, Justin says the experience was CEO of Big Concerts, Heidi Rowley, Western Cape branch manager of Reach for a Dream, Prof Alan pretty scary. They ended up having Davidson, head of haematology-oncology at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, and Karen van Wyk. PHOTO: NETTALIE VILJOEN to spend three weeks in hospital fol-
lowed by another six weeks a year later. “When Mervyn Serebro (national chairman for the foundation) announced the Dream Room initiative at the gala event last year, it resonated with me and Karen,” he says. In addition to the two Dream Rooms, the reception area at the oncology ward also got a makeover. It now boasts a colourful play area complete with brand new chairs, tables and toys. When it comes to the surgical ward’s new playroom (which includes an Xbox), Sister Nomsa Nxu, operational manager: nursing, says she is not sure who was more thrilled: her or the children. “I was so excited when I was told of the plans to create the playroom. It made me feel like a child again. The Dream Room’s purpose is twofold. Yes, it’s for the children, but it is also a place where tired moms, who often stay up the whole night – worrying about their children – can go to rest for a bit.” The handover comes hot on the heels of the upgrade of the oncology-haematology unit at the hospital. The unit now sports state-of-the-art ECG monitors, private consulting rooms and isolation areas for vulnerable patients, as well as a counselling room for a social worker. It also includes fully equipped ablution facilities for families, a renovated filing room and a bigger and more comfortable nurses’ tea room. Big Concerts also contributed generously to this project driven by the Children’s Hospital Trust (CHT). School drill teams put on an impressive show RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes The annual drill competition hosted by Steenberg police station’s social crime prevention unit (SCPU) was certainly something to see. The competition saw eight school teams competing in various categories to show their skills. The teams who participated – some with years of experience and others with very little – were Delta Primary School, Harmony Primary School, Square Hill Primary School, Levana Primary School, Thomas Wildschutt Senior Primary, Blouvlei Primary School for learners with special education needs, Sibelius High School and Lavender Hill High School. Const Lugmaan Adams of Steenberg po-
lice’s SCPU organised the event in conjunction with Steenberg community policing forum (CPF) and explained his intended aims for the competition. “It’s part of our social crime prevention plan. We do this every year. During the last week of school, schools have lots of children who leave and don’t come back, so we try to keep them busy in this last week and keep them going to school,” said Adams. He says drills teach the children discipline and keeps them off the streets. Delta Primary School’s drill team is made up of learners aged 10 to 13. They have been participating in the competition and taking part in the sport for more than four years. “For this competition, we had three weeks of training. We started with the new ones, from basics, so it was quite a challenge,” said
Connor Koopman, drill team coach at the school. “Their progress has been quite good. I’m quite surprised they reached the level that I wanted them to be at,” he added. There were awards for the best high schools and primary schools, and additional awards for best march, best dressed, best exhibition and best drummers, to name a few. The overall winner of the competition in the high schools’ category was Sibelius High School, with Lavender Hill High School in second place. In the junior schools’ category, Levana Primary School took first place, with Delta Primary coming in at a close second. Steenberg CPF’s Marcelle Williams concluded the festivities. He said: “You need to stay disciplined, focus on your education, study and progress. Don’t be satisfied with
the minimum. At school, try your best so that you can study further. You need an education to join the police, navy, army or air force.” He added that learners have the opportunity to be seen and recruited into the police forces through the drills competitions. The schools’ competition was a precursor to the Mitchell’s Plain Saps Marching and Drill Competition in October, aimed at finding teams suitable to represent the district on a larger scale. Hilton Palanyandi, principal at Delta Primary School, said his hopes for the future of the competition was that it would one day turn into a fully-fledged festival where the entire community could see the talents of the learners at the local schools in a festive environment.

PEOPLE'S POST | MITCHELL'S PLAIN Tuesday, 24 September 2019
Forces joined to showcase local talent T
wo local youth football fraternities joined forces to showcase local talent in Mitchell’s Plain during the Golden United Tournament. The tournament was held in collaboration with the MRP Foundation High Schools Soc-
cer League, which is largely considered to be the flagship of schools football in South Africa, in Rocklands on 7 September. Golden United chairperson, Sowyba Jones felt that soccer has been monopolised for far too long with public facilities being the bar-
gaining chip to keep clubs and school sports such as the MRP Foundation apart. She felt that all junior sports and senior sports should and must be cohesive for the development of soccer in Mitchell’s Plain. MRP Foundation High Schools Soccer League chair, Shamiel Kolbee echoed these sentiments stating football was the overall winner of the day and applauded Golden United’s executive for having displayed vision and that the tournament is an example of what is possible if we all work together. He also hopes that this is an eyeopener for club soccer and school soccer to join hands. It showed that the league is very much part of Mitchell’s Plain and not an entity intent on only playing for themselves, as was perpetuated by the custodians of soccer in Mitchell’s Plain. MRP Foundation’s High Schools Soccer League secretary, LiAnne Mervyn says: “In communities such as Mitchell’s Plain where our youth remains Xola Gigaba of Lentegeur High School drives the ball through a host of defenders from Beacon Hill High School trapped in a poverty cyduring a MRP Foundation High Schools League game, played at Rocklands sport complex during their fixture on cle of crime, drugs, gangSaturday 7 September. bly high level of school drop-outs, it is important that we offer them something to aspire to, to keep our youth motivated, focused and on track at a time when the general morale of our communities is at an all-time low.” She adds it is important that they demonstrate leadership and create unity through action to help bring meaningful change, which is the aim of the tournament going forward. It was the first time in Mitchell’s Plain that the 16 participating high schools, in what is commonly referred to as the “Mr Price League”, played their matches as a curtain-raiser to the Golden United Tournament. “This demonstrates that clubs and schools can collectively work together to promote the beautiful game and coach a flourishing relationship that has been conspicuously lacking in football in Mitchell’s Plain for many years,” adds Mervyn. Mervyn was excited and amazed at the very same time at the number of parents, spectators, players that came out in their droves to support sport. “It only proved that the love of the game still exists within Mitchell’s Plain. The socalled leaders of soccer within Mitchell’s Plain has been instrumental in denying our youth of interacting with each other, by perpetuating false truths about the league to the clubs within Mitchell’s Plain. By playing side-by-side at the tournament, Golden United and MRP Foundation Schools League has shown the soccer fraternity that they have seen through the lies and will help build a better and stronger soccer fraternity of unity for our boys. We all need to save the futures of our children!”

10km. Just over 1 500 participants were blessed with cool weather; with Raydon Balie (30:34) of Eerste River and Langa’s Pamela Moyikwa (39:02) using it to their advantage to beat a top field of runners in the open categories. The Langa club have been consistently sharing the podium of late with the most noticeable addition to the club being Fortunate Chidzivo who smashed the Cape Town marathon 10km course record last week, Sunday 15 September. The MSA race is a start of a series of races lined up for this week on the Western Province Athletics calendar with the Nantes Athletics Club poised to host their annual race on Tuesday 24 September, and Goodwood Harriers ending off a festival of running on Saturday 27 September. Here are a few snaps from Sunday’s race in Wynberg.
