ROCKLANDS

Rocking it with slime SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

I

t was a proud moment for the Spine Road High School family as two Grade 11 learners from the school headed to Johannesburg to represent Western Cape in the Business of the Year Award ceremony. The event was hosted by Junior Achievement South Africa (Jasa) between Monday 24 and Friday 28 June. Joshua Randall (17) and Sifiso Ndzonda (18) are assistant general manager and administrative manager, respectively for a school-based company called Designa Slime. The company was established after they attended a 12-week entrepreneurship course facilitated by Zaida Julius courtesy of Jasa. Jasa, is an organisation that offers young opportunity makers an experiential platform where they explore real business activities. They assist in developing a thriving small business sector in South Africa and nurture young entrepreneurs. Julius said the programme is run as an extra-mural activity. In order to be part of the course, she said she selects 45 learners and they get taught skills that include business function, conceptualisation and how to put together a business plan. “Towards the end of the 12-week programme they are then tasked to come up with a business innovation plan,” she explained. Randall and Ndzonda form part of a company that came with the idea of selling slime that helps clients to relax, Julius revealed. She added the slime also helps those who have sinus with its mint flavour. Julius explained part of her role is to nominate a business group for the provincial leg of the Jasa Business of the Year Awards. She revealed she nominated the two teenagers who beat the other entrants. “They will, however, enter another competition to win cash prizes and another trip to Johannesburg in the September holidays,” explained Julius. The elated learners said they are proud of themselves and are thankful to Julius for being patient with them. Speaking before heading to Johannesburg, Ndzonda, a Khayelitsha resident said

The duo, Joshua Randall and Sifiso Ndzonda who took Johannesburg by storm. he was looking forward to learn all that is there to learn. “It going to be a good experience for me because I will be interacting with people who do not speak my language and I will learn a lot from them and they will learn something from me as well,” he expressed. Even though they did not win, he said he it did not deter their spirit. “I want to say to Zaida that her time with

His other dream is to pursue studies in dentistry. Randall from Lentegeur was just as excited. He said the journey has been filled with a lot of challenges but he is glad they have

reached this far. He said he wants to change people’s perceptions about Mitchell’s Plain. “People have this idea that Mitchell’s Plain is all about gangsterism. I told tell them that there are children here who are doing good things and want to succeed in life,” he shared. Julius’ words of wisdom to them are: “The aim is not just to win but to be the best.”

LENTEGEUR

Forum to serve as information hub SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

T

he Mitchell’s Plain Communication Forum hosted its second meeting, since its first sitting in May. The meeting, which was attended by various community development organisations, was held at the Lentegeur Sub-council office on Saturday 22 June and was chaired by ward 43 councillor Elton Jansen. He was joined by a motivational speaker Athol Williams and representatives for various organisations. A Powerpoint presentation by Pam Naidoo, from the Urban Management Directorate, outlined what the forum was about. Before Naidoo’s presentation, the gathering listened to Williams’ motivational talk which left them inspired to do more for their community. Williams, a qualified mechanical engineer who was born and grew up in Mitchell’s Plain, told the gathering that it was important to plough back into the community. He said he has enjoyed some of the best opportunities in the world that included travelling and working overseas. At some stage he owned a pool of six German sports cars and had the luxury of choosing which job offer to accept, he revealed. He said he was young then and was not thinking as an adult, he was overwhelmed by the money.

Giving back “The turning point for me was when I decided I needed to change my lifestyle and use the money for the good of the community,” he shared. Williams said he funds, among other things, a project called Oaky Books. The books are distributed in primary schools in Mitchell’s Plain and Soweto and

Athol Williams reciting some of his poems

it has inspirational stories for children. “The aim is to inspire children to be the best they can be. I work to make money not to buy myself cars but to help these children,” he said. His wish is for children to know that even if they come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they can make it in life because he also did. “It is all about deciding. You just decide to be number one and not second best,” he said, explaining how he achieved what he wanted to.

Forum is there for everyone The meeting proceeded and it was Naidoo’s turn. She explained in her presentation that the forum was not there to replace any existing community organisations. She said it was formulated to be the communication source for the community of Mitchell’s Plain and the forum was a voluntary movement for the enhancement of the community. “We welcome suggestions. The aim is to help each other understand what the forum is about and it will help to bring solutions to problems,” she explained during her presentation. Naidoo also explained the forum will not exclude any wards in the Mitchell’s Plain area and that it is there to serve everybody. “We are here to engage, ” she explained. Representatives were given an opportunity to raise issues. Suggestions included that two representatives from each organisation must attend and the organisation must be registered. Attendees were also advised to forward their suggestions in writing for the next meeting. Jansen first commended Williams for his moving motivational talk. He said it is time the community promot-

ed their idols and not the international stars that they see every day. He went on to hail the meeting as a good tool for the community to communicate and also come together. He said the forum was a step in the right direction and is a need for the community. “It is a good thing that we are coming together and not doing it for our own but for the community. “We represent a community, we need to have the needs of our communities at heart,” he said. Echoing the words of Jansen was Rashmiya

Lucas, chairperson for Colville Residents Association. She described her organisation as one that seeks to be the voice for the community. She said she likes the idea of a forum and is glad to have been part of the first meeting, and vowed to attend all the future ones. “I feel very positive about this, I am looking forward to engaging further because there is a lot of information to filter to the community,” Lucas explained. She said there is a need for residents to know all about what is happening in their community because it affects them.

Kids taught about blood donation SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

S

couts South Africa summed up youth month on a healthy note by taking a group of girls and boys to a learning session about blood donation at the Westridge Civic Centre last Tuesday. Scouts district commissioner Annsley Spies says the event was hosted in partnership with the Western Cape Blood Services (WCBS) to educate the children in the process of blood donation. Spies admitted the children were still young but explained it is a good idea to plant the seed when they are still young. Spies, a blood donor herself, says it was important that people rallied behind WCBS. “We just want to spread the message of awareness that you must do something remarkable, donate blood and you could save a life,” she explains. She says the youngsters enjoyed being there and be educated about living healthy and donating blood. Pamella Ntseke, promotions officer at WCBS says she felt good about the interaction with the children. She agrees they (children) are still young and not at the level where they could donate. Ntseke added that their wish is to grow the programme and reach more schools in order for the message to reach a wider audience. She said the organisation is struggling with all blood types; O, A and B and urged people to come in numbers to donate. “We are calling on people to come to donate because, with a unit of blood, you can save three people,” she adds. She thanked all those who regularly donate blood and encouraged them to motivate other people. The children listened carefully as Ntseke took them through a powerpoint presentation, educating them about donating blood. The presentation had videos and the youngsters giggled every now and then. After the presentation, they were grouped and given fun exercises. The winning team was given some goodies. Governing schools as inclusive spaces Over the past few years, issues relating to inclusion and tolerance of difference have challenged private and public schools across South Africa. As instruments of participatory democracy, it is the role of School Governing Bodies (SGBs), to ensure that schools are safe places for all learners to learn and thrive. Per section 16 of the South African Schools Act, the governance of every public school is vested in its governing body. This means that SGBs are responsible for determining all policies of a school, including admissions policy, language policy, code of conduct etcetera, as well as for financial management and ensuring employment equity. These policies can play a vital role in ensuring that schools are inclusive and tolerant spaces for all learners, staff and parents. Research shows that an involved community and an effective SGB working with teachers and dynamic principals at schools

have better outcomes than those schools who do not – even if the latter have more financial and other resources. A recent book by Brian Levy, the academic director of University of Cape Town’s Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, The Politics and Governance of Basic Education: A Tale of Two South African Provinces, looking deeply at schools in the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape found that strong governance was directly correlated with strengthened education outcomes. Whilst strengthened education outcomes are extremely important, there is more to learning than the curriculum. Learning environments need to not only teach but also model the values of dignity, equality and freedom in our Constitution. School policies and practices should embody these values. In reality, there are already many challenges facing SGBs on the ground. A lack of interest and participation among parents, limited understanding of the roles of SGB members and their responsibilities as well as difficult relationships between school principals and SGBs, which can impact significantly on the culture and learning at a school. This highlights why it is important that schools understand the role of SGBs in governance broadly, and in promoting inclusion and tolerance in South African schools. In 2018 the Bertha Centre at the UCT Graduate School of Business, established the Schools Inclusive Governance Network (SIGN), in response to the need to support SGBs. SIGN hopes to fill the training gap by providing school communities (learners, teachers, principals and parents) with practical advice and support to advance social inclusion through policies and practices in schools. Training and networking opportunities are provided to SGB members to learn and share experiences. On 8 June SIGN hosted a one-day workshop that focused on how SGBs can lead the way to create inclusive policies and educational spaces and provide participants with a network of support in this democratic endeavour. It is hoped that initiatives like this will enable more schools to navigate the challenges of inclusive policy making and embed a culture of appreciation for diversity among future South African generations. We need additional facilities not trees In response to the article published in People’s Post about sports facilities getting more trees, (“Council sports facilities go green”, 25 June). I think this is a good idea, however, we need more sports fields and other improvements to our already existing facilities on the Cape Flats as it is illmanaged. Trees are great, they give oxygen and uplift the area, but we need infrastructure to meet this first. That R1.2m spent in Newlands and Southfield could give kids on the Cape Flats a chance at playing sport and keeping them off the streets. Maybe something to think about. JAMES KING Email

Help ease traffic congestion Traffic congestion and the impact it has on the local economy was one of the key discussion points at a meeting with the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). All Capetonians arrange their lives around traffic, be it commuters who rely on public transport, motorists in private vehicles, or the businesses who need the road network to move their goods and services. We are building new roads and we are prioritising public transport, but the projects won’t happen overnight. In the meantime, technology is changing our lives and the question is, why can the private sector not step up with innovative solutions to beat the traffic? For instance, you are far better placed to develop smartphone applications for lift-clubs and car-pooling than us. Private businesses could assist by allowing employees to work flexible working hours, to work remotely, or to implement condensed work weeks. You could also think of ways of incentivising employees to form lift-clubs and to do car-pooling. We have thousands of cars on our main roads with only one occupant – the driver. If we can get four, or even only two people, to travel together we can half the number of private vehicles on the roads during the peakhour periods. The City will be spending an additional R165.7m in the 2019/20 financial year on new roads and links to relieve congestion in the worst affected areas. These include:

. the dualling of Broadway Boulevard (R30 million) . work on the Belhar Main Road (R35 million) . the completion of the Kommetjie Road and Ou Kaapse Weg project (R24.9 million) . Langverwacht Road (R23 million); . Sandown Road (R46 million). A further R22m has been allocated to upgrade the north and southbound lanes of the R44. The City will also invest approximately R114.8m on building new public transport interchanges (PTIs) and to refurbish existing interchanges for commuters and the minibus-taxi operators. Construction of a new minibus-taxi facility is already underway in Dunoon, while the contractor for a new PTI in Somerset West will soon be implemented, within the next five months. Plans are also underway for major refurbishments of the facilities in Retreat and Wynberg. Cape Town’s road network comprises over 10 600km and every inch of it is managed by the Transport Directorate. Our road network is our biggest asset and thus, the City has set aside over R173 million for the maintenance and reconstruction of the city’s roads for the 2019/20 financial year. We are committed and the money has been allocated, but we need Cape Town’s business people to also contribute with smart ideas that will address the challenges within the transport realm. Join the fight against drug trade The Western Cape Department of Social Development (DSD) calls on society to assist in our fight against substance abuse, as we observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Wednesday 27 June. The Department of Social Development has allocated R109.8m for the 2019/20 financial year, to continue our work in tackling this scourge. Furthermore, since 2014, we have provided early intervention services to well-over 30 000 individuals, and aftercare and reintegration services to nearly 9000 individuals. The legacy of Apartheid has been manifested in various ways since 1994. One direct consequence is the increased prevalence of substance misuse and abuse. A major social problem, it has a debilitating impact on South African society. Moreover, substance abuse has a direct relationship with the increase in many social problems, ranging from poverty to crime, gender-based violence and child abuse. Given this context, establishing and improving existing substance abuse interventions in the Western Cape remains an urgent priority. Above all, collaborative strategies between government, stakeholders across society and the affected communities, is what is required to win the fight against substance abuse. DSD continues to be at the forefront of the fight against substance abuse, focusing on rendering; . awareness and primary prevention services;

. early intervention; . treatment centres; . reintegration and after-care support; . integrated programmes with the departments of education and health as well as local drug action committees of local authorities; . co-ordination with partners, e.g. NGO sector; . standardising professional and management best practices; . facilitating diversion programmes with the social crime prevention unit as a means of intervention with the youth at risk. Our Department has grown its network of funded services from a mere 7 in 2009, to now funding 53 organisations working at over 75 sites across the province. The 75 sites include the 6 funded inpatient treatment centres. We have specifically targeted treating young people, in order to address the rising tide of youth alcohol and drug usage. Furthermore, we are capacitating our services with training in the Life Skills Cognitive Behaviour programme as an initiative with Rotatory international and trainers from Holland. We urge all residents suffering from substance abuse to make use of our services. Anybody needing more information or assistance can contact us on the www.heretohelp.co.za website, or the DSD hotline on 0800 220 250. We can beat drug and alcohol abuse, better together. Schools must manage learners well With regard to the letter published in People’s Post about scholars staying at school until the last day of the term (“Kids must finish school terms, 18 June). I fully agree with that. Our children will come home after their last day of writing exams saying their teachers told them to stay at home. Because the teacher said this, they will

refuse to go to school. I think this issue should seriously be addressed by principals with their teachers. I thank you for the letter so now I can prove to our kids that school is open until the last day. MALIKA THOMPSON Mitchell’s Plain

randWest in partnership with the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC) offered tutoring sessions to learners at AZ Berman High School from February to June. The 12-week programme concluded with a celebratory event at Tafelsig High School hall on Saturday 8 June, to celebrate the top 10 achievers. Lorraine Bailey, acting head of curriculum of Metro South, represented the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), while Mervyn Naidoo, general manager of GrandWest, presented the top 10 learners with their awards. Genevieve Smith, GrandWest’s sustainability manager, said the Grade 8 learners were tutored on the school’s premises every Saturday and the focus was peer mentoring and learners helped each other to understand what was being taught. AIMSSEC is a non-profit organisation that provides professional development courses for mathematics teachers, particu-

larly to improve subject knowledge and empower teachers from disadvantaged rural and township communities. The intervention by the two parties came as a result of a statement that was made by the provincial department of education. The statement revealed that only five out of approximately 240 learners in Grade 8 at AZ Berman High School had passed maths. It furthermore read the National Department of Education has set the pass mark to 40%, and this was the highest mark achieved in the entire grade. According to a statement by GrandWest, the results of the learners improved dramatically, with the top 10 learners getting between 88% and 73%. They reckoned this achievement is even more exceptional considering just how under-resourced the school is. Smith added even though the learners are done with the programme, the partnership and mentoring from the AIMSSEC members will not end. She said the aim is to monitor the progress of the learners.

PORTLAND

Zooming into the impact of arts SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

I

n an attempt to start a conversation and educate people about the arts, BlaqPearl Foundation held a panel discussion on its premises in Portland on Saturday 22 June. Members of the panel included Janine Stompies (a photography company owner), Kenan Peterson (a creative director), Kurt Orderson (founder and director of Azania Rising Productions) and Mpendulo Mabindisa, a music video director. Titled “How Art Can Impact Your Life”, the session was attended by a small group of art lovers, residents and artistic community groups Alliance Francaise du Cap and Ekse Lens. The panel shared their personal stories of how they ended up where they are in their respective fields, while Blaqpearl director Janine Overmeyer welcomed the guests and thanked them for coming. Overmeyer led the discussion with Chenal Kock, who was born in Mitchell’s Plain, playing the role of the master of ceremony (MC). Stompies revealed she has a professional background in Information Technology (IT) and worked for a number of years. She shared, while she was in the IT field, she felt she was losing herself. And for her, that was a good enough sign to quit, she bought a camera, learned how to snap and fell in love with it. For Orderson, being a filmmaker means that one has to do self-reflection, he said artists from communities need to produce content that the residents will be able to relate to. “We need to tell our own stories from our own reflection,” he said. The panel agreed that for them art is a

form of healing from different feelings one could be feeling. Sophie Jasmin, director for Alliance Francaise du Cap, said she is thrilled to be part of the event even though the weather was cold. Alliance Franchise is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) that offers free French lessons, hosts cultural activities and promotes South African and France cultural activities. She said Blaqpearl is a perfect platform for them to reach a greater and wider range of youth. “Blaqpearl is firstly a strong partner in Mitchell’s Plain and I feel like they can help us build a different programme to help the youth because they have a good network,” she said. Jasmin said the youth out there is in need of platforms such as the session and the organisation is The audience braved the cold weather to attend the event. doing well in mobilising them. event gave people a chance to hear from othMpumelelo Sefalane, Ekse Lens’ team ers who have made it in the arts field to member, gave the organisation a high five share what the art has done for them,” he for hosting an event, saying more and more said. events of this nature are needed in their Ekse Lens is an institution that offers free communities. services to youth who are interested in pho“I am super excited about this event, peo- tography. The Site C resident made mention of the fact that in the audience there were people he knew from Langa. He claimed they had to travel from such areas to be able to get an opportunity to attend the event.
