COLORADO PARK

Dog lovers assist kids SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

What a move Ignatius Pastor and Cameron Erasmus are Hip Hop dance partners from Portlands. They have been awarded South African colours and are due to represent South Africa, with a number of other duos from South Africa, in Netherlands in October. Their challenge is the bill for the trip – they cannot afford it and are appealing to the community at large to pledge financial support so that their dream of participating on an international stage could become a reality. n the spirit of Ubuntu and giving back, a group of dog owners and lovers made the day of children at Elonwabeni Child and Family Centre (ECFC) special by donating some much-needed items to them. The donation happened at the centre’s premises in Colorado Park on Sunday 21 July. ECFC is a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) that houses children who are victims of parent neglect, domestic violence or HIV related issues. The NGO works closely with the Department of Social Development and has inhouse social workers. Items donated include clothes, toilet paper, sanitary towels and body lotion. Lizelle Bakkies is a member of The Enduro Pits, the group that made a donation. Enduro is a club of dog lovers who do community awareness events to discourage people from ill-treating dogs. She said fundraising and giving back to the community is a big part of who Enduro Pits is as a club and ECFC is a perfect clinic to benefit. “The Enduro Pits committee are very family orientated and we consist of a large number of female club members who themselves are mothers and wives. “Elonwabeni Child and Family Centre al-

so comprise of mostly female caregivers and facilitators and we wanted to thank them and honour them for their hard work,” she explained. She said that they would like to assist the centre in the future and because their mandate as the club is to help impoverished communities. Wilma Brown and Florence Stuurman, who are house mothers at the centre, expressed gratitude to the team that donated. Stuurman wished them well and for God to increase their territory. The evangelical Brown said the deed of the donors was noted by God and they will be rewarded for it. “Shalom and God’s richest blessings in their lives. By giving to our children they are enriching the soil of their children,” she expressed. According to the duo, the centre currently houses 32 girls and boys. Part of duties of the five women who are the guardians of the children is to ensure that the children do not feel like they do not belong and, in fact, feel at home and special “We always tell them that they are no different to other children out there and that they have the full potential to become whatever they want to become,” said Brown. Brown said some of the values they instil in the diversified bunch are that of giving back, trust, acceptance and love. “The life choices that are made by them, whatever choice they make will determine their future,” she said. FROM PAGE 1 Working in the organisation is not glamorous as they are faced with some challenges but they choose to look at the brighter side, they said. They said the challenges they face include children whose parents are hard to trace. They revealed some come to the centre with no documents such as a birth certificate. Speaking on behalf of their housemates, Erinnery (15) and Aphiwe (17) thanked the donors. They also urged them to continue doing the great work. They wished for them to be blessed abundantly. Erinnery said she enjoys staying at the shelter with the mothers whom she described as both “wonderful” and “strict”. “They spend time away from their families and spend it with us and that means so much to us,” she said. For Aphiwe, the donation is more meaningful than one can imagine. She said she appreciates the fact that the donors thought about them in the shelter. “I want to thank them for what they did. It means a lot to us because they thought about us as we are not with our biological families,” Aphiwe expressed. Aphiwe is currently doing Grade 11 and wishes to pursue law when she finishes

Unemployed people were assisted to register on the Lulaway database at the Cape Town Library on Thursday 18 July. The registration drive was held by the City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate which is working in partnership with Lulaway. Lulaway is a workforce development project that assists young people with job readiness training. The public was shown how to use the computers with free internet in a City library. The internet is provided by SmartCape, a public access initiative by the City to in-

crease digital literacy and skills for its residents, with a bias towards those who remain severely impacted by the digital divide. One of the City’s strategic focus areas is leveraging technology to help improve the lives of its residents. “The SmartCape programme was initiated in July 2002 when we had installed computers in six public libraries across the City, on a pilot basis. “Six months later there were 3 000 registered SmartCape users.” says Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle. She adds: “Today, there are over 450 000

registered users who can get up to 45 minutes of free internet use per session per day, across 670 computers in 104 libraries.” This initiative has grown computer literacy in communities across Cape Town. It is enriching the users’ knowledge and supports small business growth across the metro. Since the launch of SmartCape, it has also expanded its digital literacy efforts through various learner and training initiatives. It still remains the platform where many residents are exposed to the internet on a desktop for the first time.

The olympiad is a problem-solving contest and challenges learners to practise and improve their skills. “The Programming Olympiad builds coding skills. Even writing a programme to solve just one of the tasks is an achievement. The experience of taking part widens horizons for the future,” says Programme Olympiad manager, Michael Cameron. TAFELSIG

Safe short cut for learners M

ayco member for transport, Felicity Purchase, activated a new pedestrian crossing before learners arrived for school on Thursday 18 July. She said it gave her great pleasure to activate the pedestrian crossing in Tafelsig on Mandela’s birthday as it focuses on two of his passions – children and education. The crossing will not only help learners to conveniently access a way to the Tafelsig Primary School, children will also be able to cross over to the play park. “It was a great privilege demonstrating to learners how to use the pedestrian push buttons and to wait for the green signal before crossing the road,” she said. According to Purchase, having that pedestrian crossing along AZ Berman Drive will not only help the children cross the road safely, but will also make it easier for parents who sometimes have to multi-task by holding children’s hands, and pushing prams.

Award-winning gardens The Cape Horticultural Society will host a talk about the Sali award-winning gardens, by Morné Faulhamer. He recently completed judging the gardens for the South African Landscapers Institute. The talk will be held on Monday 5 August at 20:00, at The Athenaeum Trust on Campground Road. The cost is R30 for visitors. Plants and seeds for sale. Contact Glenda on 021 531 5713 or info@capehorticulturalsociety.co.za.

According to the statement, the City of Cape Town invested approximately R1m in the signalisation project. “The transport directorate applied new road markings and installed road traffic signs, as well as vehicle detection using camera technology and audio-tactile pedestrian push buttons to improve the safety and convenience of crossing AZ Berman Drive,” she says. Purchase added that the signalisation speaks to Mandela’s sentiments about creating a better world for children. “Tata once said ‘education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’, and as a caring City we are changing the children’s world, one area at a time. What better way to do so by ensuring that learners get to their well of knowledge and learning safely,” she said. Purchase also urged motorists to adhere to the traffic signal and allow the little ones to cross the road without fear.

The crossing will not only help learners but also the residents.

A couple’s dream remains in doubt SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

C

ameron Erasmus and Ignatius Pastor’s dream of travelling to Netherlands to participate in the Hip Hop Unite World Championships could remain just a dream. That is if they do not raise enough money to travel. For the duo, dancing is their first love and when they are on stage, they forget about all the worries of the world, and live in the moment. They have been fortunate enough to win a local qualifying competition twice thus far. Winning allows them access to the competition in Netherlands in October but a lack of funds could result in them not heading there. They each need R20 000 which, according to them, will only cover travel expenses. This amount does not include visas. The Portlands duo, whose stage name is

CI Ethos, says they have been the reigning title-holder for South African colours twice but could not travel previously due to lack of funds. That is why they are appealing to any good Samaritan to make their dream become a reality. CI stands for first letters of their names and ethos refers to the positive ethos they live by as dance partners. Pastor says dancing, for him, is not just passion but a tool to help the youth. He is also the co-founder of Set For Dance, a registered non-profit organisation that does community arts events. “For me, it is purely about the community, it is about helping children who do not know they can make it in life. I want to help them realise that there is a possibility to do more things than all the negative around them,” he says. Pastor and Erasmus are part of a group of other dancers from other representations in South Africa who are due to head to Netherlands. Erasmus says dancing has been something she loved from when she was young. “Dancing takes me out of my comfort zone. I also love the fact that with it you can use music to free emotions,” she says. About their upcoming trip, they say they are ready and are confident that they will do well. They are not certain as to what the prize will be and for them, it is not just about the prize but about making the experience and learning all there is to learn. Wishing them all the best is Judy Rhodes, chairperson for Set For Dance. She described the duo as hard workers who give every performance their best. “My dream is for them to go out on the world stage and represent not just Mitchell’s Plain but South Africa,” Rhodes said. She further describes Pastor as a passionate dance who does not like short cuts. “With him, if you do it (whatever it is), do it right. He always weighs the options and chooses the best. He is a go-getter,” she describes. On the other hand, she describes Cameron as a “softie” who remains quiet, but the minute she climbs the stage she becomes great. “She is a very disciplined dancer and she shines on stage,” says Rhodes of Cameron whom she also described as “world-class”. V For more information about how you can help, call Ignatius or Judy on 071 043 3746 or 081 373 5496.

STRANDFONTEIN

A food garden to feed multitudes SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic

M

beautiful and highly productive gardens at community projects and at their homes. Ben Getz, founder of Urban Harvest, says the event was to help in starting a garden that would ultimately feed not only Camp Joy members but also people from soup kitchens and those in surrounding communities. Some attendees were youth from Strandfontein, from Camp Joy, who are battling addiction or are on parole, and are looking to be placed in rehab programmes. “The installation of this organic garden will allow the youth to maintain their own garden, grow their food and learn about the environment and transform themselves,” Getz says. Besides planting the trees and car-

ing for nature the event sought to send a message that one reaps what they sow, Getz says. “By working together, beautifying the environment and being of service to society we can transform our own lives,” he says. He says trees are a good example of giving and love because they give people a lot and never ask for anything in return. “Planting trees is a simple thing that everyone can do and it is a powerful way of giving back and paying forward into the future,” he says. According to Getz, more future projects will benefit the community. He added that the projects aim to instil a sense of responsibility and a real feeling of meaning in their everyday lives.

ore than 100 volunteers sang and danced while planting trees during an event to start a food garden held in Strandfontein on Sunday 21 July. The event was organised by Urban Harvest in partnership with Camp Joy. Camp Joy is a structure within First Community Resource Centre, a non-profit company (NPC) that focuses on areas including rehabilitation and restoration as a guideline to quality of life, healthy living, and re-integration. Also, present was the Art of Living Foundation which is a foundation that was the organic supplement into the event. They were funded to kickstart the project. Part of their mandate is to cultivate a sense of preserving nature and to also grow food that could feed the community. TALENT SEARCH

Children sing from their hearts TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

singing competition at a leading restaurant in Claremont left patrons with teary eyes and goosebumps on Friday 19 July. The contest was for children aged between six and 13. To set the tone for the evening a drumming group from Mitchell’s Plain drummed and marched into Rodeo Spur. Restaurant branches started the singing competition last year in Johannesburg and it was brought to Cape Town this year with only selected restaurants running the competition locally. Rodeo operations manager Nadia Paulse says the competition was awesome. “It was so much fun, everyone really enjoyed hearing the little voices,” she says adding that the competition was meant to have only 20 singers and she ended up with 27. The competition ran until the restaurant closed its doors for the day. “The kids left everyone with wet eyes, with some tears rolling, because they sang from the heart.

“It was truly amazing and a night full of fun,” she says. Rodeo runs several events to involve the community and Paulse says it is their way of giving back and to thank the community. “When we look at the people that come to the restaurant it is the people right next door. “They have kept us going for years and to have programmes that involve them and improve their communities is a way of saying thank you. It is not all about us taking, but also saying thank you.” She adds that they are really grateful for the support and the loyalty of their customers. “We are a family here. Our restaurant is not like others that are at the malls and people just happen to go there because they are at the mall. For us, we are on the side and people make a decision to come here and we are grateful for that,” she says. The winners from all the branches that took part will compete for the R30 000 grand prize on Tuesday 8 October at Navaho Spur in Brackenfell.

TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji A group of fourth-year medical students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) did a health promotion project to educate mothers about HIV and the importance of getting tested throughout pregnancy – and beyond – to reduce mother to child HIV transmission. The students, Angela Strydom, Themba Ndovi, Nomalizo Duze, Bradley Thompson, Michelle Yi-Tin Yuan and Alana Williams held talks with the mothers and nurses at the Vanguard Maternity and Obstetric Unit (MOU). They want to implement a long-term project to improve clinical management of HIV testing in mothers and they have been working with one of the doctors at the clinic. The students designed a stamp that will be placed in the Road to Health Booklet (a booklet mothers are given once the baby is born and is used at every check-up visit) to encourage HIV testing and keep a record of these tests. Williams says students are allocated different communities and have to design a health promotion project that addresses the needs or problems of the community. “We were placed at Vanguard and through our engagement with one of the doctors who works there, Dr Mosedi Namane, we identified that a problem is mother-to-child transmission of HIV after pregnancy or while the mother is breastfeeding,” she says. “We also did a presentation (today) where we educated the mothers about HIV and held a discussion with the nurses. This is the first time that we were actively involved in health promotion for patients,’’ says Williams. Asked about why they chose Vanguard MOU, Williams says that the doctor who was working at the clinic brought this issue up with them and therefore they decided to create an intervention to highlight this issue.

The mini-event was opened with a prayer and a delicious meal was served to seniors who ate and rejoiced. Andrews, who is married to Daniel Andrews, was born and grew up in Claremont and has been living in Lentegeur for the past 13 years. Her husband could not attend the celebration as he is sick. Schools excel in battle of the blood donors E

ducational institutions were called on by the Western Cape Blood Services (WCBS) to challenge each other to see who donates the most units of blood, and the institutions brought it on. Some of the schools that took part in the battle included Bergvliet High, Plumstead High, Wynberg Boys High, SACS High, Livingstone High, Windsor High, Pinelands High and Oudemolen Technical High to mention a few. This annual campaign titled “Battle of the Blood Donors” aims to increase blood collections within this period and ultimately recruit new donors. This year the battle took place from Tuesday 2 April until Thursday

23 May. A total of 56 educational institutions took part and 28 challenges took place. This year 939 new donors were registered and a total of 3 037 units of blood were collected within the campaign period. A total of 4 362 people attended clinics and showed interest in donating blood. WCBS corporate public relations officer, Michelle Vermeulen says this number is a remarkable improvement since 2018 and truly shows the commitment and great spirit among the youth. “The winners of each challenge were determined by a pro-rata formula looking at the potential eligible donors, the number of new donors, attendance and units collected

at the blood donation clinic. Using a pro-rata formula made the process fair towards smaller educational institutions,” she says. Vermeulen says they are proud to announce that Meridian Pinehurst School in Durbanville won the overall battle and came in the first place. They now have the official bragging right of the battle and won an additional R1 000 voucher toward the school’s educational efforts. “In second place is Claremont High School who battled against Zwaanswyk High School – both schools only recently joined our blood donation family and really excelled in this challenge. In third place is Protea Heights Academy who beat their oppo-

nents Brackenfell High School in a true knock-out round,” she explains, adding that the efforts made by each of the schools were truly remarkable. “One school did a talk at a nearby mosque, SMSs were sent to parents, peer promoters dressed up, clinics were decorated and random raffles were held at the clinic. “Live Instagram posts were done, a welcome banner was made and Blood Buddy welcomed donors,” she said. She continued: “Battle props were used to create a vibe, schools sent each other photos of their clinic to show them they mean business and one school even had a welcome,” she concludes.

Learn to grow a garden with NPO TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji Soil for Life, a non-profit organisation in Constantia is calling for the unemployed and those that love gardening to take part in their 12-week training programme. The organisation helps residents learn to grow healthy, organic food and to use available resources. The course which will cover home gardening, how to use fertilisers, planting in containers, how to plant a seed, seasonal planting, how to make the soil fertile, how to recycle among other things is open to anyone. The training costs R15 and participating will get three bags of compost, seeds, mulch and the knowledge that will change their lives for good with that price. The training will start on

Monday 19 August. Programme coordinator Sandy Lewis says: “The course is all about commitment and it is an opportunity that can’t be missed. We want people that will follow through in the 12 weeks and our aim is to get everyone eating healthy and from their gardens,” she says. Lewis says people must start thinking about the future and eating healthy. “Genetically Modified Organism foods are slowly killing us. We must start growing our foods in our backyards. We will eat healthy and it will be much cheaper because this food is right at your doorstep,” she says. There is no need for previous experience in gardening as everything will be taught. Lewis adds: “Apart from learning to grow a garden some

of the people that have taken part in the programme have formed long-lasting friendships and even profitable businesses,” she says. She also says that even if one is done with the course they can still come to the organisation and some of the people are even supplying them with seedlings. “So this a lasting relationship we are building. We are also there to support the people that have gone through the programmes,” she says. They are looking for people in Mitchell’s Plain, Khayelitsha, Mfuleni, Retreat, Delft, Grassy Park, Steenberg. However, those that want to take part and can get to the nearest areas where there is a garden are welcome. Lessons are done in groups. V For more information call 073 159 2128

The disaster operations centre logged 43 flooding-related incidents; 122 power outages across the metropole; nine incidents of trees that had blown over or fallen branches and two incidents where roofs were blown. Disaster Risk Management Centre is coordinating the City of Cape Town’s response to incidents reported during the most recent heavy weather episode. Operationally, the status of reported incidents at present is as follows: . 3640 structures affected in Masiphumelele, Imizamo Yethu, Khayelitsha, Burundi, Nomzamo and Wallacedene. . Fallen trees were reported in Parow, Edgemead, Crawford, Panorama, Durbanville and Brackenfell. . Roads flooded across the city – most notably in Wallacedene, as well as Pelican Park, Ottery and Diep River. . Power outages in Strand, Bonteheuwel, Observatory, Noordhoek, Joe Slovo Park, Athlone, Wynberg, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Sunnydale, Rondebosch, Philippi, Mitchell’s Plain, Hout Bay and Plumstead. “This situation will change as repair teams make their way through the list of reported incidents. We ask that residents please bear with us, as assessments have to be completed for purposes of record before assistance like flood kits can be provided. The City did make emergency shelters available to the affected communities; however, these offers have not been accepted,” says Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith. Following the latest winter task

team meeting on Wednesday 24 July, blockages in the stormwater system emerged as one of the biggest concerns. These blockages are the result of illegal dumping, but also people storing items in the drains. “Another concern raised is the quality of information provided when members of the public log service requests or alert us to emergencies. This has the potential to slow down response times or results in the incorrect agency responding. A simple example is, if the emergency is at City rental stock, we ask that callers indicate such because that too will help determine the correct department to lead the response. Therefore, my appeal to the public when reporting any incidents during heavy weather episodes, but also just in general, is to give as much information as possible, that our response matches their need,” says Smith. The City reminds residents of the following tips when making a call for help: . Once you have dialled the number and are through to the operator, give them your contact number first so they can call you back if you lose connection; . Always give your full name; . Describe your location as accurately as you can as the operator might not know your neighbourhood as you do. . Give the details of your emergency and let the operator guide the conversation; . stay on the line for as long as you can as operators will be able to identify helpful information from the call staying connected.

MUNICIPAL SERVICES

Libraries have the write stuff T

he City of Cape Town’s libraries have partnered with the Open Book Festival organisers to give storytellers, writers and poets an opportunity to see their work in print through the #WritingMyCity project. The best contributions will be printed in an anthology, which will be launched at this year’s festival in September. The competition has closed and the final selection for the anthology is being made. “A total of 187 entries were received from

librarians and patrons. These included stories and poems in Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Kaaps. All the work that will be selected will focus on an aspect of our beautiful city,” Badroodien said. Budding storytellers and writers were asked to submit their stories about Cape Town and creative writing workshops were facilitated at libraries to find the voices, said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien.

He continued: “It has given participants a platform to celebrate and deepen our understanding of who and what makes Cape Town such a wonder. It is also providing an opportunity for writers, young and old, to see their work in print and share their diverse stories. “Open Book appointed a judging panel to make the final selection of 40 contributions and I am excited to see and read more about our diverse city,” said Badroodien.

Speaking on the writers’ narratives, he said: “The city is home to a multitude of different voices and the anthology will give us a glimpse into some of the stories which make up the colourful fabric of Cape Town.” The printed anthology will be available through the library network and also available for sale at the Open Book Festival taking place from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 September.

Right people key to success of business PROMOTION To be in business for almost 22 years is an achievement in itself but would not be possible without the right employees. This is how Nathaniel Roberts, owner of Timbacore in Stikland, sums up his success through the years since his company was established in 1998. To make a success of a business is a miracle and you’ll have to deal with trials and new challenges on the way. “International statistics show that a very small percentage of companies make it past the 10-year mark. Use reputable timber suppliers The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), the SA timber engineering industry’s professional body, wishes to reiterate the importance of using reputable timber suppliers or merchants whose timber complies with the relevant characteristic values. “We encourage our members and the industry at large to remain steadfast in selecting and using only compliant structural timber that is certified by either of the only accreditation bodies currently in South Africa: The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and South African Technical Auditing Services (SATAS), who certify products in compliance with the relevant standards,” says Amanda Obbes, ITCSA General Manager. It is critical that standards are maintained at all times and that all timber produced and destined for the SA structural market, is compliant. As such, it is expected that local as well as interna-

tional manufacturers of structural timber destined for the SA market, will be certified by a South African-based ISO 17065 accredited Product Certification Body, which is also applicable to the neighbouring states (Swaziland and Zimbabwe). “We request that all members to be aware of the need for compliance with national legislation and to not make use of either locally produced timber or imports that do not comply with SA standards and requirements,” Obbes concludes. The institute was established 45 years ago to self-regulate the engineered timber roof structure industry and to provide design, manufacturing, erection, inspection and certification for compliance with inter alia SANS 10400 and SANS 10082, where engineering rational designs are applicable. International guest artists join ‘Sleeping Beauty’ cast

DANCE THEATRE

‘Beyond’ takes people on a journey I

ndoni Dance Academy in Pinelands and partners will present a new production at the Artscape Theatre called Beyond on Sunday 25 August. With performances – and the grand finale – woven together and directed by Indoni Dance Academy artistic director, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, Beyond highlights the creativity, diversity and the sheer joy of breaking down the silos, going beyond ourselves, and coming together in dance. Beyond today is tomorrow with all its possibilities, and the start of a powerful dance collective. In a show of strength and unity, Beyond features performances by over 120 dancers from the Indoni Dance Academy, Dance Theatre Africa, Figure of 8, Jika Madinga, Unmute, Nqaba, Janine Booysens, Alexander Sinton High, Jazzart and Is’thatha. Each company has also chosen dancers from their outreach groups to guide them on the path to a future in dance.

Sleeping Beauty will return to the Artscape Opera House from Saturday 17 to Saturday 31 August, featuring an exciting cast of talented performers from across the planet. Performed to a score set by Russian composer Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty is a timeless story that follows Princess Aurora’s 100-year sleep and magical awakening told through ballet. “We are honoured to be welcoming our international guest artists who will be joining us for selected performances,” says Debbie Turner, chief executive officer (CEO) of Cape Town City Ballet. “Due to unforeseen circumstances beyond Sarah Lamb’s control, she is no longer able to join Cape Town City Ballet for this season but hopes to do so in the near future. “As a wonderful replacement, we are thrilled to welcome Tatiana Melnik who trained with Vadim at Perm Ballet School and is currently a principal of the Hungarian National Ballet.” The title roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Florimund are divided between four performers. South African born ballet-dancer, Andile Ndlovu, is set to portray Prince Florimund on the opening two nights. Ndlovu, who was recently nominated for a Benois de la Danse Award in the category of Best Male Dancer, will be sharing the spotlight with co-lead American-born ballerina Precious Adams of the English National Ballet, portraying Princess Aurora.

Also playing the roles this year are Vadim Muntagirov – principal dancer at the Royal Ballet, and Benois de la Danse Award recipient (Best Male Dancer); and Hungarian National Ballet principal-ballerina, Melnik. “I’m so looking forward to returning to Cape Town and dancing with Tatiana at these performances,” says Muntagirov. “We trained at Perm Ballet School in Russia and this will be our first time dancing in Sleeping Beauty together. Tatiana is a beautiful ballerina, and it’s going to be a joyful experience.” With set and costumes designed by acclaimed South African artist, Peter Cazalet, and lighting design for the production done by multi-award winning set technician, Wilhelm Disbergen – this seasonal production of Sleeping Beauty promises to be one not-tomiss-out-on experience. As an additional treat for eager audiences, Cape Town City Ballet will be accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra during the 19:30 performances on Saturday 17, Friday 23, Saturday 24 and Wednesday 28 August. The Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra will also accompany the Cape Town City Ballet at the 15:00 performances on Sunday 18 and Saturday 31 August. V Tickets are priced from R180 to R695 with concessions for pensioners, scholars and block bookings of 10 or more people through Computicket on 0861 915 8000, online at www.computicket.com or any Shoprite Checkers outlet.

Individual works are choreographed by each company. Beyond takes young dancers from these groups and affords them practical experience to the process, dedication and the hours of rehearsal required. They will have the opportunity to work alongside their role models within their own company, and also the leading dancers, choreographers and trainers of all the companies involved. It promises to transport audiences on a journey into the uniqueness of current African contemporary dance in South Africa. Audiences will experience South Africa’s richness and catch a glimpse of its bright, exciting future. The Indoni Academy was established in 2014 with the vision to become a worldclass, sustainable performing arts academy for talented youth. V Shows will run at 15:00 and 18:00, and tickets cost R100 per person, R50 for students and are available through Computicket.

Local actress joins Nomad Academy BENITA JAFTHA @benitajaftha2 Actress and producer, Zena Wood (30), from Kuils River has been accepted to join the prestigious Nomad Academy. This follows her graduation from the New York Film Academy in 2015. “I’m going on a three-month programme for leaders in different industries,” Wood said on being accepted as a leading voice in her industry by the Nomad Academy. The academy brings driven individuals together to create entrepreneurial careers, in inspiring locations around the world. “I think it is going to be a wonderful time with a very exciting group of people. So, lots of learning to be done,” Wood said. “We have so many incredible stories,” Wood expressed. “South Africans have really always made their mark in Zena Wood the world, (and) I’d like to tell those stories. I’d also like to focus on some conservation efforts in the future.” Wood knew from a very young age that she wanted to be in the performing arts, from the various extramural activities she took up. Before jetting off to the United States of America (USA), Wood studied at Stellenbosch University – majoring in politics and philosophy – before graduating from the Wa-

terfront Theatre School in 2012. Thereafter, she completed her film qualification at the New York Film Academy in 2015 in New York. Wood’s move to New York City was not an easy transition, as she thought it would be. She is currently studying her MBA researching leadership and sustainability. Over time, she overcame the challenges she faced and grew to appreciate the cultures she was surrounded by, accepting that Kuils River was different from New York. Her latest achievement was getting accepted at the Nomad Academy. The programme is combined with travel, “so we will be living in South America for three months,” said an excited Wood. Her body of work includes her latest production, Blacklight – which is done using principle photography. As a producer, she works on many productions. Wood has been involved in several projects thus far: the Netflix show Faster; Race the World; as host and dance commentator on the TV Dance Live channel; as well as being the musical director and producer of The Nose Play, written by Kit Goldstein. Looking at where she is right now, Wood feels blessed for the opportunities to explore The Land Of Opportunity further. “I knew I wanted to go to America. I’ve always been drawn to it” When it comes to long-term-goals, she hopes to bring productions down to film in South Africa.

Award-winning movie to be screened A screening of The Adventures of Supermama will be held at Simon’s Town community hall in celebration of Women’s Month on Saturday 10 August. The Adventures of Supermama, is a comedy, action-adventure and features some great stunt and fight sequences, while amusingly tackling South Africa’s real social challenges. “This movie shows that every girl can do this,” said Supermama actress, Nomsa Buthelezi at the premiere which was held in

Johannesburg in June. Director Karen van Schalkwyk said: “It has been the culmination of many years of hard work. It was great fun making this film with such a talented cast and crew. It is fantastic that Supermama can finally have a life of her own and get out there into the world. It will be great for the community to have the opportunity to see the film.” She added that she is thrilled that the audience will have the opportunity to see the film in her hometown and mentioned that

the film was well-received at various festivals and on the circuit. The movie stars an A-list cast including entertainer Desmond Dube, Michael Mabizela and Siyabonga Mtshali. The cast also includes newcomers’; martial arts expert Leo Ming and Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) heavyweight Bernardo Mikixi. The movie has been screened at the Cape Town International Film Festival, Durban International Film Festival, Jozi Film Festival as well as The Africa

Film Trinidad & Tobago 2019. The Adventures of Supermama was also nominated for Best Comedy of the Year at the African Movie Academy Awards 2018. Prices for children are R25 and adults are R40. The screening begins at 18:00 to 21:00 and the tickets are available at Two & Sixpence Pub on 88 St Georges Street, Simon’s Town or at the door from 17:30 to 18:30. Only cash payments on the day. HEALTH

Changing lives through health SAMANTHA LEE @SAmantha_Lee121

A

fter her 16-year-old son was hospitalised around 10 years ago, Benita Niemann set out to investigate the benefits of a mineral few acknowledge as important. Magnesium, she would come to realise, is one of the most important minerals in your body. “As a single mother of three, I basically lost everything because of medical bills. My son ended up in ICU. He was a flatline. At that time, my total hospital bill came to R200 000. It bankrupted me,” says Niemann, founder of Magnesium Café. “My son had liver damage and the doctors said they could not give him any medication because it was too strong for his liver. They pulled him through with a Panado drip and prayer.” Following her son’s ordeal and recovery, Niemann started researching magnesium and founded Magnesium Café. She had sold other products before finding Doctor Frank Muller who assisted her in developing Mag1, a magnesium mineral supplement, designed for maximum absorption into the body. Magnesium plays a role in more than 350 enzymatic processes in the body, which include the metabolism of food, synthesis of fatty acids and proteins, and the transmission of nerve impulses. The human body contains around 25g of magnesium, of which most is stored in the skeletal system. The rest is present in muscle, soft tissues, and bodily fluids. The company was founded in October 2017 and is based in Tyger Valley. “Medical bills destroyed me and I realised there must be something more and that is when I started with magnesium. I worked

for a medical aid company and I would see how medical funds were depleted quickly, especially with athletes,” she says. “Athletes would go back and forth to doctors and never recover. It was like the more tablets they get, the sicker they get. After researching the magnesium, I thought that if I could educate children about living a healthier life, then they could put bread on the table,” she says. Knowing the restorative benefits of magnesium, Niemann started sponsoring athletes, who saw a remarkable increase in healing and reduced durations of sport-related injuries. Niemann says many of the children they now work with have lost either one or both parents and end up becoming the breadwinners in their households. This results in them not looking after their bodies. Niemann believes that assisting in improving their health, it assists them in putting bread on the table, through prize money or sponsorships for young talent. The recent addition to their athletes and ambassadors is also Paralympic athlete Hilton Langenhoven, who is using and endorsing the benefits of the product leading up to the upcoming Paralympic Games. “The product is a tool. With every product that is bought, it makes it possible for us to sponsor an athlete. There are so many athletes who need support,” she says. This is sometimes financial support to assist in getting young athletes to training camps or access to sessions where they can be scouted. The company had recent such success with a young athlete being sponsored to a training camp and running himself into a scholarship. The athletes are from all over the country and all use the product to assist them in im-

Benita Niemann proving their performance and healing. “I wanted to start a non-profit organisation (NPO), but recently joined up with an existing NPO, the Hendrick Ramaala Sports Foundation. They heard about me sponsoring the athletes and asked if I would like to partner with them. They are quite well known with supporting marathon athletes,” she says. “We are hoping companies will get involved through our NPO partnership and that people will get involved because these

athletes need a lot of support.” Each bottle of 30 tablets cost only R99. At this stage, the product is available at some pharmacies and health shops. There are also agents selling products and is available for sale via their online store. skateboarding and showcases an international roster of skating’s elite pros. Before leaving for the States, Johannes said the chance to skate with the world’s elite is a big opportunity for him. “In skateboarding, it’s considered an honour to receive an invitation to the SLS. I’ve grown up watching events like these and to be selected to be part of this season’s is a dream come true. It’s the highest level of street skateboarding in the world and it will be assisting me greatly in accumulating points for the Olympic Games ahead,” he said. At each indoor SLS event, arenas are transformed into custom concrete skate plazas,

challenging the pros to be innovative and take the progression of skateboarding to new highs as a selection of worldclass skateboarders compete for the largest purse in skateboarding. The event carries all the more weight with pro-skaters vying for the chance to prove themselves ahead of Tokyo 2020, where skateboarding will make its Olympic debut as one of the most exciting new developments in the Summer Games. Johannes also achieved his second Guinness World Record when he broke Dyrdek’s 15 year-long record for the most fakie flips in one minute recently, one of skate boarding’s most difficult manoeuvres.

Softball shakes things up NOORE NACERODIEN

T

he Cape Town Softball Association, formerly known as the Western Province Softball Federation, held its 27th annual general meeting on Sunday 28 July at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The newly-elected executive committee is the youngest committee ever to be elected to administer the sport in Cape Town since unification in 1992, with all the elected officials still playing, which augurs well for the sport in Cape Town. Newly-elected chairperson Hayley Carolus, who plays for Battswood Softball Club, thanked the clubs for having the confidence in the new group. “We will work together for a better association and in the interest of the game of softball. Our starting foundation blocks should be softball first. I am here to serve softball and our clubs,” said Carolus. She will feel comfortable having Devonshire Rovers’ Bradley Johnson by her side as her deputy chairperson. Tantasport’s Nawaal Nacerodien will see to the secretarial duties with Samantha Jones from Falcons taking

care of the association’s coffers as the treasurer. Excell Dodgers’ Dwain Kerchhoff will look after the youth with Nicole Alexander from Westridge Yankees taking the reins of development director and Pirates’ Denver Anthony looking after the technical portfolio. Filling up the compliment of the committee is Westridge Yankees stalwart Candice Bull will head up the transformation portfolio. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages with the hope that the sport will flourish once more. “May you serve with pride and integrity as you lead softball into a new chapter of hope,” said Dianne Morgan. Cape Town has been the stronghold of softball in the country for many years at all levels of the sport. It is hoped that this new young group can reignite that flame. Former coach and umpire, Preston Ringquest, said: “May the youth prosper and take softball in Cape Town back to where it deserves to be.” The local softball season is expected to kick off in October.
