Nominate those elder heroes now

Two volunteers paint walls as part of an initiative to claim back public spaces in Tafelsig.

Do you know elder superheroes who, despite their age and social circumstances, go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities? Nominate them now for a Community Champions Elders Award. Through the awards, now in its fourth year, People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers, aim to honour those awesome elders who are making a profound difference in their communities. He, or she, could be the older, active neighbourhood watch patroller walking the streets at 04:00, feeding the children in their street, driving the sick to the clinic, knitting beanies and blankets for unwanted babies or giving free boxing lessons to keep the youth off the streets, all out of their own pockets. Tell us what wonderful deeds they’ve done for their community.

Nominations close on Tuesday 27 August Elders making a difference can once again be nominated in one of two categories: “70-80 years” or “80 plus”. Six finalists will be selected and notified by Tuesday 3 September. All their wonderful deeds will be featured in the newspaper in the weeks following, whereafter our readers can vote for the People’s Choice winner. The winners in both categories, as well as the People’s Choice winner, will be announced at a morning tea in Cape Town on Saturday 12 October.

resident from Tafelsig wants to beautify open spaces in the area, one mural at a time. Michael Bell (48) established the Tafelsig Placemaking initiative last year with the idea being to develop public spaces, making it more “liveable”. According to Bell, the initiative aims to address the social issues in the community, including violence and substance abuse. He said: “Having noticed what’s been going on in the area, the parks and public spaces have become a no-go area for

our children, our women and the public in general.” He said most of the gang wars are being fought in these open spaces and many have become dumping and landfill sites. According to Bell, this has been a concern in the community, and he felt something had to be done. “My passion is public spaces and mural art because I have been exposed to it over the years. During my travels, I saw how other cities addressed issues by developing their parks and public spaces,” said Bell. Bell said the painting of murals, which started a few weeks ago, is a community-driven initiative.

“We hope to look at other spaces in and around the area as well.” According to Bell, there are many stakeholders involved in this initiative and although the project started last year, it is still a work in progress. Bell said the response from the community since the launch of the initiative has been great. “People who would normally do drugs and are part of gangs have offered their time to assist. When we had our launch, residents came out of their homes for the first time in months. They are claiming their space back,” said Bell. V To page 4.

Human beings ‘a threat to rangers’ NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

S

outh African National Parks (SANparks) has begun the process to deploy 120 tour-

ism monitors to various parks after a spate of attacks on rangers and tourists in the Cape region. The announcement was made during the annual World Rangers Day event held at Mouille Point in Sea Point on Wednesday 31 July. The day commemorated the rangers who died or were injured in the line of duty

and celebrated the role rangers play in the conservation of nature. The event was held just a few days after the fatal attack on Ukrainian tourist, Ivan Ivanon (43), who was stabbed at East Fort, Chapman’s Peak Drive, in Hout Bay on Saturday 27 July. SANparks managing executive of parks, Senzeni Mokoena, said the incident is one

of many alarming attacks that have happened in the parks. He said it had become evident that human beings were more of a threat to rangers than the animals and that interventions were necessary. He said that rangers stood up to poachers daily in efforts to stop the illegal poaching of rhino horns, abalone and the removal of indigenous plants. Mokoena said the training programme was funded by the national departments of tourism. After completing the training, safety rangers will be stationed in all Cape Region parks. “The programme is a great opportunity, preparing young men and women to grow within the organisation and allowing them to learn new skills for the job market,” said Mokoena. He said that SANparks would tighten its relations with the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement, neighbourhood watches, police, CapeNature, and other security agencies. He also said that this measure was important to ensure the safety of the rangers because they played a crucial role in preserving and conserving natural assets that boost the economy. Mthabatha Matjila, a section ranger at Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), said that working at an open-access national park was challenging as the public did not understand the importance of obeying the rules of the parks. Matjila said that an event like this was a reminder that the preservation of biodiversity remained important, and that the work done by rangers should be recognised and appreciated.

WESTRIDGE

David Jaftha painted a mural for the Little Cubs Scouts Academy in Westridge. There are three different pictures painted on one wall.

n 80-year-old resident from Westridge in Mitchell’s Plain uses his artistic talents to uplift the community. David Jaftha recently completed a mural inspired by The Jungle Book for the Little Cubs Scouts Academy in Westridge. Jaftha says he started his hobby when he was 16 years old and enrolled at Vasco Secondary School. He says he usually just gives his paintings away when people show a liking for them. Jaftha says that the children who watched him paint the mural seemed quite impressed with his work. He added that, although he doesn’t paint every day, he loves doing it. “I don’t think I will ever stop painting. My right arm will have to be broken for that to happen,” says Jaftha. His grandson Jesrael Jacobs describes Jaftha as being an inspiration to everyone he meets. He says his grandfather has such positive energy. Jacobs says Jaftha is always willing to lend a hand and to offer his artistic talents for the enrichment of the community. His motivation for painting the mural was to create a sense of joy for the young scouts. Jacobs adds: “He painted the mural in the likeness of the characters from The Jungle Book purely out of the goodness of his heart, expecting nothing in return.” He says that the mural is the latest exam-

David Jaftha (80) ple of his grandfather’s many selfless acts in making the world a better place. “Whether it is revamping the Bibles of local churchgoers, his brilliant paintings of Table Mountain or the creation of a Nelson Mandela portrait made entirely from rice (which hangs at the Mandela Foundation), it is all done with love,” he says. Jacobs says Jaftha’s youthful and creative spirit is a source of entertainment and strength for his family and the Westridge community.

EDUCATION

NPO aims to change the narrative LISA LOTTERING @demilottering

A

Mitchell’s Plain organisation wants to change the narrative of Cape Town communities. The Good Enuf organisation focuses on working with and assisting teenagers struggling to transition into adolescence. This is achieved by providing them with the necessary life skills to master and direct their own future and vision. Beyonifer McGee (32) started working in the non-profit organisation (NPO) field 10 years ago. McGee, who is now the director of Good Enuf, says she left her corporate job to go into this field. Good Enuf wants to address issues that everyone faces daily but that no one wants to speak about. This includes issues that lead to bullying and self-harm. The organisation, established in February, gives bullying presentations to high

school learners and works with those who have been affected by bullying, with their school therapist lending extra support. McGee says for now the organisation focuses on schools in Mitchell’s Plain. “We have seen an improvement in some schools. Children who couldn’t speak to their parents spoke to them and connected with them.” She says they focus on making “positive the new normal”. “We want to bring positivity to Mitchell’s Plain.” McGee says a lot of stories you read are negative and, as the saying goes, “you are what you read”. “If the youth reads negative things, why do we get angry at them for doing negative things like bullying,” she asked. McGee says people say you should be afraid in Mitchell’s Plain and stay inside your home. “Why don’t we talk about the people who

do go outside, who go to do their jobs,” McGee asked. She added that everyone is focused on gangsterism, but a new narrative must be created for the youth. “We need to celebrate positivity. That will inspire the youth to be more positive. We need to change their mindsets.” As part of Community Development Foundation Western Cape (CDF), Good Enuf will host an event on Saturday 31 August, ending Women’s Month on a high note. “We will be doing follow-up events every three months and these will include men.” McGee says the theme of the event is “Post-trauma”. The organisation will empower women by providing a safe, intimate space at the event, Phoenix Women – Power through pain. Women attending will have the opportunity to listen to and interact with other women, sharing their personal experiences, focusing on traumatic events. For a few hours, women can let their guard

down, complain if they want to and be as honest as they want, free of shame. The event aims is to engage 100 women in conversations, providing them with a platform to inspire and motivate one another by being real and vulnerable, honing in on coping skills to derive “power from their pain”, post-trauma. Tickets, available at R200, are limited. Prebooking is essential. Tickets can be purchased through Webtickets or at your nearest Pick n Pay. No tickets will be sold at the door (unless communicated otherwise). No children are allowed. Doors open at 13:30 and the event will end at 17:30. Money raised will go towards funding future bullying presentations and other community initiatives. V Follow their journey on Instagram and Facebook and share your posts by using the hashtags: #PhoenixWomen #PostTrauma #Powerthroughpain #GoodEnuf. For more information, send an email to info@goodenuf.org.za or call 083 398 0302.

FROM PAGE 1 He said even the eight- and nineyear-olds came out to help on the day the project was launched. Bell said the goal was to portray a positive image for children and to create positive role models for them. “We see children walk past the images of the numbers gangs painted on the walls. “Because they see this every day, they begin to identify with it and it becomes acceptable be-

cause it’s all they see.” Bell said the community should start creating positive images for children to look at, to give them something to aspire to. “We want to create awareness. Let’s begin to see Mitchell’s Plain’s future as a blank canvas.” The Tafelsig Placemaking initiative has architects, planners and artists on board but it still needs sponsors for paint and brushes.

Radio show host honoured Pippa Hudson, the host of CapeTalk’s popular lunch show Afternoons with Pippa, was honoured for her work in advocating health news and informing listeners in Cape Town and beyond. The Mowbray resident received a Titanium Award from the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa during an awards ceremony held on Thursday 25 July. The Titanium Awards recognises and celebrates healthcare professionals and businesses delivering superior services to the South African public and private healthcare sectors.

Hudson was awarded for her 2018 body of work presented weekly in the health and wellness segment of her show on CapeTalk. These segments included interviews and content about concussion, sleep, atopic dermatitis, palliative care for children and the importance of access to pregnancy education. Hudson said she shares this accolade with her colleagues: producer Amy-Rae Rispel (30) from Rocklands in Mitchell’s Plain and technical producer OB Sitwayi. “We are deeply honoured by the acknowledgement of our continued work and segment around

healthcare. “I will continue to use my voice and platform to push healthcare boundaries and to encourage meaningful discourse that educates our audience,” said Hudson. CapeTalk’s programme manager Tessa van Staden said the award is a testament to CapeTalk’s commitment to be a voice for the community. “We are thrilled for Pippa Hudson, Amy-Rae Rispel and OB Sitwayi and encourage new and longtime listeners to continue tuning into this award-winning show.” V The show is on weekdays from 13:00 to 15:00 on CapeTalk 567AM.

Operation Lockdown a success During a joint operation by the police and national defence force, four premises and 27 people were searched, and eight arrests were made. Operation Lockdown took place in Mitchell’s Plain, Tafelsig, Eastridge and Beacon Valley on Tuesday 30 July from 14:00 till 22:00. According to a statement by Mitchell’s Plain police spokesman, Captain Ian Williams, arrests were made for possession of tik, mandrax and dagga, and attempted murder.

survey to determine whether tourism will benefit the Mitchell’s Plain community is underway. A similar survey was previously held in Khayelitsha and, according to the findings, most residents were very positive about tourism and tourist routes being rolled out in the area. The organisation conducting the survey, ovatoyou, aims to conduct similar research in Langa, Grassy Park and Athlone. Amanda Reekie, ovatoyou’s founding director, said the survey intends to support the community in building a tourism offering and to include residents. “The detail of how this will happen has not been determined,” she added. Reekie said the survey was about establishing whether tourism benefits communities through job creation. According to Reekie, the survey aimed to discover which sites within the community would appeal to tourists and what the possi-

ble barriers in the community were for tourism and tourists. She said although challenges had been identified in the survey in Khayelitsha, the overall response had been very positive. According to Reekie, once the information about the survey in the areas was collected, it would be used to determine the attitude about tourism in the communities and the correct approach to take in the various areas. “If the decision to hold tourism workshops in the community is taken, the company will engage with the community.” As an incentive to complete the survey, Ovatoyou is offering R5 000 to be shared by five winners from each community surveyed. Up for grabs are a R2 000, two R1 000 and two R500 prizes. Winners will be chosen through a random draw. V To register, visit http://surveys.ovatoyou.co.za. Once registered, you will be sent the community survey automatically.

SALT RIVER

Kids to shine in circus NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku

W

atch ordinary children do extraordinary things at the second edition of The Greatest Little Circus on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August. The Salt River-based Zip Zap Academy has created a platform for children to shine. The one-and-a-half-hour-long show, which starts at 12:00 and 16:00 respectively,

will take place at the academy’s dome. Choreographer Christine Chapman says the show revolves around a movie called The Greatest Showman. “We all loved the Hollywood movie. It illustrates how the circus started. We are where we are today, because of the traditional circus. “It is a fun, light-hearted show and the performers exude energy. It’s ideal for the whole family and highly entertaining,”

says Chapman. She adds that the circus encourages kids to “dare to dream, to see what they can achieve”. They work as a team to reach a common goal. She says the young performers earned this opportunity. “Passion and perseverance pay off. We choose about a quarter of our performers to feature in the shows. This depends on how hard they work, and we try to give

them all a chance in the spotlight. “All the kids at Zip Zap have great skills and they all deserve a chance to showcase their talents,” she adds. Zip Zap Academy offers free programmes to participants, to nurture and help young people to realise their talent. The academy has been around for 27 years. Performers are divided into groups, depending on their skill level, with the older and more advanced members moving on to a group called the Zappers. At this stage, the performers’ training is more focused on their specialities to prepare them for the professional stage and to get them to focus on pursuing a career in the art of circus. V For more information, contact Zip Zap on 021 421 8623 or email events@zip-zap.co.za.

Jos Nel, Mia Louw, Elizabeth van Vuuren, Bradley Ware-Lane and Justine Rubesch in Butlers and Bombshells at the Masque Theatre.

Gina Beukes takes a bow in Cape Town

THEATRE

Ever wanted to kill off a character in a show? A

nyone who has attended the National Arts Festival in the past decade should be familiar with the Butlers comedy series, which promises new and exciting material in Muizenberg. The shows have enjoyed huge popularity since first being performed in 2008, with thousands of people having seen the murdermystery plays where the audience gets to decide what happens next. For the first time yet, Slick ’n Sleeve is bringing their latest “whodunit” comedy production to the Masque Theatre. Butlers and Bombshells is the new instalment of the series. The Butlers team is thrilled to once again present patrons with a brand-new comedy where the audience’s participation has an impact on the storyline. The production shows audiences that an actor’s life can be murder! When a group of aspiring performers audition for a coveted role, dead bodies start piling up – because some people will do any-

thing to get a big break. It’s a murder-mystery with ingenious plot twists. Plus the audience gets to kill off characters during the show. So, if you have ever wanted to kill off one or two characters along the way, now’s your chance. Voting takes place by way of a narrator who gives choices to the viewer. Once a decision is made, the story heads in a particular direction. Anything can happen. Butlers and Bombshells is an exhilarating ride with crazy antics happening right up until the final scene. Murder-mystery theatre has never been this exciting and with multiple endings, who knows what’s going to happen? This thrilling, hair-raising play is to die for! V Tickets cost R100 and bookings can be made through Computicket or the Masque Theatre at bookings@masquetheatre.co.za or 021 788 1898.

Gina Beukes, known for her inimitable musical style and mastery of the violin and viola, will grace a Cape Town stage for the first time in two decades on 10 August. Beukes, currently the solo violist at opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Belgium, will treat Baxter Concert Hall audience members to a unique multi-media programme entitled: Chopin, a Lover, a War and an Astronaut. The one-night-only performance forms part of the Cape Town Concert Series in celebration of Women’s Day. She will be partnered by pianist Esthea Kruger. With works for violin and viola written by or inspired by women, Beukes will take the audience on a journey from the story of Chopin’s lover, George Sands, to the first woman to go into space; with storytelling and video projections to add to the music. Beukes, formerly concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and principal second violin of the London Philharmonic and violist in the London Symphony, graduated from the Juilliard with an MMus. Kruger, a prize-winning South African pianist, was awarded her doctorate from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in Germany. She was recently appointed to the teaching staff of the South African College of Music. The concert, which starts at 19:30, is dedicated to the memory of Huberte Rupert, the philanthropist whose generosity enabled many talented South African artists to become renowned performers.

Help Blisters to fight pollution T

he number of plastic water sachets to be handed out to walkers at this year’s Blisters for Bread will be substantially reduced. Instead, participants are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles which they can fill up at various mobile water trailers along the route. Petrina Pakoe, director of the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), says this is one of their contributions to a more environmentally friendly community. “PSFA is extremely concerned about the increase of plastic pollution and this is our small contribution towards a global movement to becoming a plastic-free society.” PSFA will also be partnering with Sasko and various private schools in the greater Cape Town area, where the learners at these schools will be encouraged to bring bread bags to school and place them in a special Sasko/Blisters for Bread

box for recycling. The participating schools will be rewarded with books which will in turn be donated to schools in PSFA’s feeding programme. Blisters for Bread, in association with Lucky Star, takes place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 25 August. Walkers can take part in one of two routes along the Sea Point Promenade – a 10km that starts at 07:30 and a 5km that starts at 08:00. Every person who enters will receive a medal. South Africa’s pop sensations Paxton and Jarrad Ricketts will be performing live at the finish line. The entry fee is R60 per person. Each entry helps PSFA feed 24 school children with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day. Enter online at www.psfa.org.za.
