n light of the recent spate of killings and gender-based violence, community leaders are calling on residents to help put an end to the scourge. Community worker Ursula Peters is calling on residents to join an inter-faith prayer service planned for this weekend. The Restoration Community Event will take place at 13:00 at the Westridge Gardens on Saturday 12 October. “This is not a church event. This is a community event,” says Peters. “Our focus is on the women and children who are brutally being raped and mur-
dered. Yes, we as a congregation can get together and talk and pray about it, but what if all our congregations (and communities) stand together as one.” Peters says several local religious institutions in the area have committed to attending the prayer service and that they will be extending the invitation to other affected communities, including Khayelitsha, Hanover Park, Manenberg and Elsies River. “The government has tried to do something. They sent in the army; they tried everything. Our only option now is to go on our knees and ask God to make a difference,” says Peters. The event is open to any group or religious leader who wants to lend their voice
to the cause. A motivational speaker and gospel groups will form part of the programme. Peters encourages everyone to bring their own chair and water. “I would like to call on everyone to make time and come on Saturday. It is not only about the horrific killings. As mothers, we have our own struggles and nothing seems to work. Come and try Jesus,” says Peters. Community worker Joanie Fredericks calls on everyone to join in. “We have tried everything over this past year. There have been so many marches, the total shutdown and, unfortunately, I don’t see a difference,” says Fredericks. “This is not about religion, this is a spiri-

n Saturday, 28 September, visitors to the V&A Waterfront were treated to an intriguing sight: nine dynamic women in white laboratory coats sharing their scientific research. The first event of its kind in South Africa, Soapbox Science does exactly what its name suggests – it offers scientific researchers a platform to connect with and educate the general public about their work. Inspired by the historical Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park, the movement first started in 2011 with a London event and has since grown to include chapters all over the world. What makes Soapbox Science even more noteworthy is the fact that it focuses specifically on the work of women in science. The Cape Town event had a rotating lineup of nine speakers divided into three groups. Each group had an hour to step up on to their soapboxes, present their research and engage with the passing crowds. The University of Cape Town (UCT) was represented, by five speakers. They were Dr Edina Amponsah-Dacosta from the Vaccines for Africa Initiative, Dr Kerryn Ashleigh Warren from the department of archaeology, Mieke du Plessis from the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa, Associate Professor Liesl Zühlke from the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Dr Natasha Karenyi from the department of biological sciences. Other institutions present included the University of the Western Cape (UWC), North-West University (NWU) and the University of the Witwatersrand. Topics ranged from excavating the Rising Star Caves, where Homo naledi was found, to combatting heart disease in children and the complexities of marine biodiversity. Employing the use of props, posters and
a healthy dose of enthusiasm, each of the speakers engaged the public. “Events like these are incredibly important,” said Amponsah-Dacosta, whose talk titled “Vaccines Are Us!” explained the importance of vaccinology in healthcare. “One of the gaps in my line of work is communicating our research and findings with the general public.” She added that, for her, the idea is never to simply develop interventions for the public, but rather to include them in the process. “Events like Soapbox Science help create a sense of transparency and understanding between scientists and the public,” she said. During her presentation titled “There and back again: Excavating at Rising Star Caves”, Warren captured imaginations with her tales of being one of the “underground astronauts” who helped excavate Homo naledi. “I have wanted to be an archaeologist since I was five years old. Sometimes you stop dreaming about these things, but I just kind of continued,” she said. The inaugural South African edition of Soapbox Science was spearheaded by Dr Lucia Marchetti, a joint National Research Foundation/SKA South Africa South African Research Chairs Initiative postdoctoral fellow working in the department of astronomy at UCT, as well as in the department of physics and astronomy at UWC. She was supported by a local organising team of enthusiastic women scientists from UCT,

UWC, iThemba LABS and the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). Marchetti was first introduced to Soapbox Science in 2015 when she participated as a speaker at a London edition of the event. “It’s all about choosing the right partners. And we’ve managed to gather a really great team,” she said. When the original call for speaker applications went out earlier this year, Marchetti and her team were overwhelmed by the interest from local women scientists. “We received a total of 50 applications from all over South Africa, which is really impressive – even in comparison to some places where the event has been running for some time,” she said. These numbers bode well for the future and may even lead to the launch of new chapters in other South African cities. Organising committee member, Professor Renee Kraan-Korteweg, UCT’s chair of astronomy, stressed that the breaking of stereotypes is critical. “Scientists are males, old, grey-haired, nerds, introvert, often not approachable. Why are there so few women in science – it gives a wrong impression to youngsters (and not only youngsters). Are women not as good, not as capable? If they are a good scientist they must be boring, unattractive. “That all is so untrue, and the Soapbox Science event proved it. The speakers were all so fantastic, stimulating, engaging and fun. It made me feel very proud,“ she said.

Faster procedure for cancer patients NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Cancer patients at Groote Schuur Hospital in Observatory will now receive state-of-theart treatment after the hospital invested millions of Rands in a Halcyon radiotherapy machine. The machine was installed and began operating at the hospital’s oncology unit on Wednesday 2 October. It was purchased from Varian Africa at a cost of R35m, and was shipped from Switzerland. It is hoped that it will help manage the growing demand of cancer patients needing radiotherapy. According to Nanette Joubert, head of the department of medical physics, a procedure
will only take less than eight minutes per patient with the new machine and they can accommodate an average of 40 patients daily. The machine stores details of each patient so that they are accurately identified with each examination. Joubert says the machine is an all-in-one design, with a self-shielding layer that makes it even safer. Joubert explains all the required examinations and treatments will be performed in one go. This will also help reduce the waiting period for patients who need treatment. Jeannette Parkes, head of radiation oncology, says the machine can treat complicated radiotherapy plans that conform to the highest standard in the world. She says it allows accurate verification of the patient’s posi-
tion during every radiotherapy treatment day. “This is particularly important for patients who are being treated in areas where soft tissue organs can move with daily physiological changes,” Parkes says. A word of gratitude came from Francois Heyns a cancer patient, who is battling cancer for a second time since his first diagnosis in 2011. He says it is good to know that the government cares and invests in advanced equipment to save lives. He says unlike the first time he was diagnosed, he is now more positive, knowing he’s getting the best treatment in the country. He encourages those that have been diagnosed with cancer to not be frightened or think of it is a death sentence. “You can beat it.”

The City talks climate change With World Environmental Health Day commemorated annually on 26 September, the City of Cape Town brought environmental health practitioners together to talk about climate change, its effects and the roles of practitioners. The theme for 2019 focuses on climate change and how it affects human health, directly and indirectly – particularly in vulnerable communities. According to the leaders in the charge against climate change, the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH): “Direct and indirect health impacts associated with climate change are caused by rising temperatures, altered precipitation patterns as well as increasingly severe and frequent extreme weather events. Direct health impacts arise from hazards such as heat-waves, droughts and storms, and indirect impacts come from exposures to disease vectors, air and water pollution. Rising carbon dioxide levels, which contribute to climate change, may also reduce the nutrient value in staple crops. This could increase food insecurity among some populations, particularly those in developing countries.” Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien says the City is also looking to combat the progression of
the global crisis. “Climate change is a very abstract concept for many people, but in Cape Town, we have, in the last three years, come face-to-face with the potential devastation that it can bring,” he says, referring to the water crisis. “It has forced us to start looking very differently at the traditional role of health practitioners, and those they work with. The conversation continues, because there are no easy answers. The one thing that is certain, is that collaboration within the City administration is crucial, but also with outside parties and, of course, our residents.” He adds: “The City’s environmental health department performs so many different functions that the public is oblivious to, and they acquit themselves of their task very well. However, the demands on these professionals increase daily, as a result of factors like climate change, the growing population and other socio-economic factors. “So, while climate change is the focus of World Environmental Health Day, it is also an opportunity to acknowledge the efforts of the department and the role it plays in building safer communities.” V Residents can report any health nuisance, environment-related complaints or concerns to the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089 or visit their nearest environmental health office or clinic.

City proposes changes to traffic bylaw T
he proposed impoundment of private vehicles set out in the City’s amended traffic bylaw, if approved, will give authorised officials the right, without prior written notice, to impound the vehicles of unlicensed drivers, drunk drivers and street racers as well as unregistered, unlicensed and damaged vehicles. Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith said this really shouldn’t come as a surprise. “We have been saying for years that there is very little to compel behavioural change. As things stand, a motorist arrested for drunk-driving gets right back in the driver’s seat the next day and many of them reoffend because there appear to be very few consequences,” said Smith. The bylaw, first introduced in 2011, has been amended to include five new chapters dealing with powers and duties of authorised officials, equipment on or in respect of vehicles, animals, driving while under the influence and impoundment of vehicles and forfeiture to the City. It opened for public participation on Tuesday 1 October. The chairperson of the City’s safety and security portfolio committee, councillor Mzwakhe Nqavashe said: “Currently, the City’s traffic officers are allowed to impound public transport vehicles where the driver does not have an operating license or is operating in contravention of their license. The draft amendments make provision for the impoundment of private vehicles under certain circumstances.” In terms of the draft document, authorised officials may, in the interest and the safety of the public, without prior written notice, impound vehicles where the: . vehicle was involved in reckless or negligent driving or illegal street racing; . vehicle is unlicensed or the licence disc has been expired for more than 90 days; . vehicle is unregistered; . vehicle is not fitted with licence plates; . vehicle is damaged or is in a state of disrepair and is, in the opinion of the authorised official, not roadworthy; . vehicle is a taxi which is being operated in contravention of the conditions of approval its operating licence or off the approved route; . vehicle has been left abandoned as specified in section 61;

. driver of the vehicle is unlicensed, or the driver does not have his or her driver’s licence available for inspection; . driver of the vehicle is under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug having a narcotic effect; . driver did not stop when signalled to do so by an authorised official resulting in the driver having to be pursued and forced to stop. Nqavashe said statistics showed, yearon-year, that there was no change in behaviour relating to transgressions like illegal street racing and driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. “The portfolio committee devised the amendments, in consultation with various other parties, in a bid to force road users who insist on breaking the rules of the road with reckless abandon to change their behaviour, and make our roads safer for all,” he said. Also, the chapter dealing with public transport operators now includes a section that speaks specifically to the e-hailing sector. It requires drivers of e-hailing vehicles operating within the City’s jurisdiction to clearly display a tag identifying the vehicle as such, along with a valid operating license. The public participation process runs until Thursday 31 October. Submissions can be made online at www.capetown.gov.za or view the draft bylaw at your local library or subcouncil office. Written submissions can be delivered to the nearest subcouncil office. V The amended draft bylaw document is available at http://bit.co/trafficbylaw.

LEGAL MATTERS
‘Make use of court watching briefs’ M
inister of community safety in the Western Cape, Albert Fritz has called on the South African Police Services to make better use of court watching briefs. This was raised in the standing committee on community safety meeting held on Tuesday 1 October. The department of community safety released its report on ‘measuring police efficiency and effectiveness in the Western Cape’. According to the Western Cape Community Safety Act, section 8 authorises the department to collect information and maintain an integrated information system. The report covers the period of April 2018 to March 2019, the same period monitored by the annual crime statistics. Fritz said: “The figures below indicate that the court watching brief unit is not being adequately utilised by police in the Western Cape. This should be immediately rectified as the national minister of police, Bheki Cele, has previously recognised the effectiveness of this programme and called for it to be rolled out in other provinces. I therefore call on police to make better use of this critically important programme which aims to identify the police’s systematic failures.” The court watching briefs initiative was introduced by the department to act in accordance with the Constitutional provisions contained in Section 206 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996, which provides interalia that every province is entitled to monitor police conduct and report inefficiencies. This is also done in accordance with the Western Cape Community Safety Act (Act No 3 of 2013) in particular Section 3. Members of the Watching Briefs Unit attend courts to observe the procedures in court in order to detect inefficiencies of the police. When inefficiencies are detected, a comprehensive report is compiled. The report is also forwarded to the portfolio committee on community safety. The provincial commissioner will then respond to the department or be requested by the portfolio committee to appear before it and to account for the
inefficiencies. The report revealed a low response from police to their own systematic failures identified by the court watching brief unit. In response by police to the systematic failures, Fritz said: “Members of the Court Watching Briefs Unit attend court hearings to observe procedure and detect inefficiencies of the police. When inefficiencies are detected, quarterly reports are compiled and referred to the provincial commissioner. “This allows police to take further steps such as placing the case back on the court roll or for the necessary disciplinary action to be taken. However, where no response is received from police, it is unclear whether any action is being taken to address its systematic failures.” In terms of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, some of the systematic failures include: . 52 cases were struck off the court roll in 2018/19; . 32 investigations were incomplete; . 16 dockets were not at court; and . Four forensic reports or ballistic reports were outstanding in the investigation. A significant number of these cases were recorded in Mitchell’s Plain, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Phillipi and Philippi East, Harare and Manenberg. “In one case of possession of firearm and ammunition recorded at Athlone Court on 6 September 2018 the matter was postponed to 13 September 2018 for bail information and then to 15 October 2018 for a bail application where bail was granted. “The matter was postponed to 11 December 2018 then 5 February 2019 for further investigation. “On 5 February 2019 the accused was not at court and the matter resumed on 6 February 2019 but was postponed to 19 February 2019 for further investigation,” says Fritz “On that date, the matter was postponed to 26 March 2019 because the investigation was still not finalised. On 26 March 2019 the case was withdrawn because the investigation was incomplete. This run around has a catastrophic impact on our criminal justice system and it is vitally important that police both acknowledge and address it.”
Waste disposal sites The City of Cape Town advises all residents and businesses using the City’s drop-off sites to dispose of garden waste that the capacity is currently limited due to delays in the appointment of a chipping contractor. Until a contractor can be appointed to perform garden greens chipping at these sites, commercial entities may be referred to alternative drop-off sites, or landfills if their load is greater than 1.5 tonnes, or if they are dropping off multiple loads per day. In order to minimise the inconvenience, the City is temporarily accepting and storing garden waste at the closed Bellville site while the matter is still being resolved. While the new tender specifications are being developed, and the bidding process on a revised long-term tender unfolds, the City’s solid waste department is working toward the appointment of contractors who can per-
form the chipping process in the interim. All possible avenues to get an interim service up and running as quickly as possible are being explored. In the meantime, garden waste disposed at drop-off sites is being transported to landfills daily where it is being stockpiled until an interim contractor is appointed. A list of the City’s drop-off facilities and landfill sites, and details of their operating hours and location, are available on the City’s website. All of these facilities will accept green waste, except for Sea Point, Woodstock and Retreat which are closed for upgrade construction. The City regrets the inconvenience caused and they have assured residents they are doing their utmost to ensure the inconvenience to those who make use of these facilities is minimised.

Masiphumelele’s Lydia helps others RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
L
ydia Nogaga, a 76-year-old resident from Masiphumelele has been nominated for a Community Champions Elders Award by the subcouncil 19 chair, Patricia Francke. She is one of the top three finalists in the 70 to 80 years category of the awards presented by the People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision newspapers, in partnership with Spec-Savers. Lydia, who previously worked with children, has been running a club called Yizani Sibonisane Seniors’ Club since 2015. The club meets every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 14:00. “I found out that the old people are left alone at home. Their children are working and some of them can’t do much. To sit at home doing nothing – or to be left with children – is no good for them,” she says, adding that she had another seniors’ club previously but could not continue due to lack of support. The club has about 52 elders, including those with physical and mental challenges, who take part in the activities planned by Lydia and Thabisa Manyase, who began assisting her after the club had begun. Thabisa says: “I make the food, ask for donations, and make a plan for funding. Lydia started before me, and after I left my job
at Pick n Pay, I just wanted to do something that’s worth it and feels like I’m doing something different.” She says it is fulfilling to do the work she does, to cater to the sometimes forgotten members of the community. The club receives donations from Pick n Pay, Food Lover’s Market and Checkers Muizenberg; and they are in the process applying for funding with the department of social development, “but it’s very difficult,” says Thabisa. Lydia says the club is important because it keeps the minds and bodies of the seniors active. Francke, who believes Lydia is deserving of the recognition, wrote in her nomination: “Lydia assists the elderly by getting their medication, taking it to their homes and supplying them with their necessary needs. She loves what she’s doing for the community and always strives to do more where she can.” The club needs wool, pots and donations for petrol to pick up and drop off seniors on each day that the club meets. V To donate or for more information call Thabisa on 076 871 2511 or email tmanyase@rocketmail.com. V The winners of the awards will be announced at a morning tea on Saturday 12 October in Cape Town. Winners and runners-up will walk away with Shoprite vouchers and other prizes sponsored by TygerBurger, People’s Post, City Vision and Spec-Savers.

MEC supports name change The Western Cape minister of cultural affairs and sport, Anroux Marais submitted an application to the national minister of arts and culture, Nathi Mthethwa, validating her support for the proposed name change of the Zonnebloem suburb to District Six on Sunday 29 September. Marais is supporting an initiative started by the District Six Museum a year ago when it raised awareness of the proposed name change through door-todoor campaigns and using local media. The museum then applied to the Western
Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (WCPGNC) after which the museum had to present its application to the committee in February this year. WCPGNC resolved to support the application at a meeting held in June and then passed it on to Marais. “It is hoped the name change will clearly communicate to the community and residents of District Six that you have been seen, you have been heard and that you do belong,” she said.

THEATRE
‘Dassie’s Tale’ comes to Muizenberg D
escribed as: “Adequately silly and engaging for children of the target age group – and everyone”, the Jungle Theatre Company will be performing their new show, Dassie’s Tale, starting this week. Thanks to funding from the National Lotteries Commission, Dassie’s Tale will be part of the Muizenberg Festival on Saturday 12 October from 15:00 to 16:00. It will take place in a new theatre space for family shows called the Jungle Theatre, at 3 Marchmont Road in Muizenberg. Dassie’s Tale is an African folk tale suitable for ages three and up. The story is set in ancient times when the earth was created. All the animals embarked on a journey to share their talents. However,
Dassie was too lazy to make the effort, and learnt an important lesson about working hard and being honest. The performance includes isiXhosa dialogue, beautiful songs, expressive dance and imaginative masks. Tickets are on sale for R50 and will available on Quicket and at the door. Refreshments and children’s books will also be on sale. All proceeds will be used to support the ongoing activities of the Jungle Theatre Company, a registered non-profit organisation. V Call 021 788 5641 or email info@jungletheatre.co.za for more information; or visit www.jungletheatre.co.za. Buy your tickets at https://qkt.io/ DassiesTale.

Jazzart Dance Theatre in the CBD is hosting a live performance by its 15 students from Friday 18 to Saturday 26 October. They will be performing in the dance production, Emerge, along with 14 Jazzart-Chrysalis Leadership one-year dance programme trainees. The production represents South Africa’s hope for a creative future. It will be directed by Jazzart’s artistic director, Sifiso Kweyama. Patrons are promised a dazzling act representing the five elements – air, earth, fire, metal and water – which all together portray a creative springboard as “each element is linked to the growing power of the people standing together to effect change”. “The female dancers emerge from the shadows to take a stand for themselves. The piece reflects a mood and a movement which is resonating around the globe at present. The raw vulnerability of each woman; their pain to be heard and seen; their daily struggles and to
be taken seriously.” Tickets cost: R80 per person, R50 (students), R30 (pensioners, block bookings) and are available at Computicket. V For more information visit www.jazzart.co.za.

Kung Fu master releases book SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
M
J Li, a Kung Fu master and martial arts world champion born in Mitchell’s Plain has decided to use his experiences from travelling the world, to inspire and motivate Capetonians, especially the youth. He recently launched his very own book titled KUNGFU, My Journey, The History. MJ (Muhammad Junaid Chafeker) says people should not be confused with the title and assume that the book is all about karate. There is more to the book than just his passion, he says. MJ has been a Kung Fu champion since 2004. Part of his collection of accolades includes four gold medals. He won Legends of Kung Fu World Martial Arts Championships in the United States in 2006 where he represented South Africa. He grew up admiring Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee and has travelled and trained in places such as Beijing. In his book, he says, he is sharing his experiences which he documented for more than two years while travelling. He says: “I hope Capetonians will find three benefits from this book; the first one being the story about my humble beginnings.” He hopes young boys and girls from the Cape Flats will be inspired by the fact that even though he grew up there, he still became an international star. The second benefit he hopes people will take from his book is his account
of the history of Islam in China as he reveals he did intensive research about it. He also uses the book as a dedication to his mother, Falma Chafeker, who passed away this year. “My mother was a white woman who married an Indian man and became actively involved in fighting apartheid. She was arrested many times,” he shares. He expresses pride when he speaks about his mother and says she was a woman who ignored her racial privilege and decided to fight for those who could not fight for themselves during some of the toughest years in South Africa. He refers to her as an unsung hero. He held a soft launch for the book and plans to do the same in other areas, combining them with motivational sessions. The sessions will include talking to men to refrain from illtreating women. “I want to encourage men out there to respect our mothers, sisters, aunts and wives,” he urges. His other message is to young men to join karate; a sport he describes as one that they can use to discipline themselves and end up staying away from drugs. The book is not yet available in stores, people can get it on request. It costs R150 per copy and anyone from anywhere can order it. According to MJ Li, once all the distribution deals have been finalised, it will be available at all major book stores. V For more information, call MJ Li’s office on 081 711 1211.

BIG SEPTEMBER WITH LOTTOSTAR
Construction worker wins on-air NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku
K
fm 94.5 in Green Point turned a construction worker into a millionaire when it announced its winner of the “Big September with LottoStar” at their studio on Tuesday 1 October. The announcement was made during the live broadcast of the show Kfm Mornings with Darren, Sherlin and Sibs. The final two finalists were invited to the studio on Tuesday where Lorenzo Michaels (29) from Mossel Bay was named the winner of the million. He had casually played an online roulette game after hearing about the competition on the radio. Little did he know it would be his ticket out of poverty. By Tuesday afternoon Michaels was still expressing his disbelief, saying he’s had a tough life. He grew up in an underprivileged commu-
nity in Great Brak River outside Mossel Bay and left school in Grade 11 to find a job to help sustain his family. He never got a chance to finish school and is currently surviving on an income of R9 200 per month that has to sustain his unemployed mother, six-year-old son and himself. When he realised he had won, Lorenzo said he saw his dream of wanting to build a house for his family becoming a reality. The next step would be to marry his girlfriend, Marlene Boezak. “I saw my life turning around for the better. It has been tough – we were struggling at home. I am so lucky, I did not expect it at all; I just played like I usually do with any other game,” says Lorenzo. He thanked the station for changing his life. Stephen Werner, Kfm’s station manager, says “Big September with LottoStar” has become a landmark month in the province and

has captured the hearts and minds of their listeners. He says the competition ran every day throughout September, with entrants standing a chance to win up to R250 000 four times a day. At the end of the campaign they gave away R1 million. “The total winnings during Big September, together with the money raised for charity, amounted to over R2.4 million – the biggest cash giveaway in the history of Cape Town radio. “We are all about creating life-changing moments for our listeners,” Werner says. According to a statement, it’s the third year “Big September” was hosted. They raise funds for #WEARENOTNEXT, an initiative by LottoStar that aims to curb femicide in South Africa. It supports various organisations to address gender-based violence. This year the station raised R625 500 for the initiative.
Urban sustainability graduates internships available The City of Cape Town is offering qualifying graduates a 12-month long internship as part of the 2020 intake for the Urban Sustainability Internship Programme (USIP). There are 40 internship posts available. The internship will start in February 2020. All qualifying national diploma or degree graduates in a related field can apply by Monday 14 October. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to be a part of the dynamic teams at the City. The interns will play a key role within their respective teams and will be assigned tasks that are essential to the relevant department function. “One of the important aspects of this internship programme is the mentoring from their managers and the access to training opportunities,” said the Mayco member for corporate services, Sharon Cottle. The USIP launched in 2005. Since the inception, 469 interns have participated in the programme. A total of 49 new interns started in February this year. Applicants must be recent graduates of a tertiary institution, be in possession of a recognised degree or national diploma in a related field. Specific qualification requirements are included in each advertised post. The City highlights that preference will be given to graduates from universities, technical universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in the Western Cape, and applicants should not be enrolled for further studies which coincide with the internship period. V To apply for one of the positions applicants need to send a cover letter, CV and supporting documents to urbansustainability.interns@capetown.gov.za. V For any queries applicants may contact urbansustainability.interns@capetown.gov.za or visit the City’s website for information.

ARD host successful 3-Vlei race A
RD athletic club held its nineth annual 3-vlei road race through the streets of Grassy Park on Sunday 6 October. The race has a unique characteristic as it takes the participants in the 10km distance past the iconic Princess Vlei, Rondevlei and Zeekoevlei. This year saw over 2 200 people participating in the main race with a remarkable increase in the 5km fun run of 1 400 pairs of feet enjoying the well-organised event.
Nkosiyethu Sotyanja of Multi-sport MSA (30:44) and the ever impressive Pamela Moyikwa of RC Langa (37:24) took the no.1 podium positions in the men’s and women’s races respectively. The much talked about sub-60-minute shield on offer for finishers of the 10km by the race organiser was once again the highlight of the event for the club runners, with many recording their personal bests on the flat route.

Young athletes blaze trail The Green Point Athletics Stadium was a hive of activity on Saturday 5 October, with schools from the Eastern and Western Cape pulling out all the stops while competing for the coveted title of South Africa’s best athletics school at the second leg of the Twizza Super School Series regional qualifiers. The series has one clear goal in mind – to crown SA’s best athletics school. “The Twizza Super School Series delivered fine competition in track and field today,” says Athletics South Africa president, Aleck Skhosana. “We are laying a foundation for future stars in youth, junior and ultimately the seniors. The great spirit of athletics between winners and those who didn’t win the titles of the day was truly inspirational. Schools competed against each other, made friends and produced outstanding talent. “We are now looking forward to seeing what the Grand Finale holds in store in February 2020.” Paarl Boys’ High School was dominant at the event, with Boland Agricultural High School finishing second, while Parel Vallei came in third. Wynberg Boys’ High School was the best placed team from the southern
suburbs, finishing ninth in the division, with South Peninsula and Portland High Schools finishing in 14th and 15th places respectively. La Rochelle Girls High School took the lead in the girls competition. Paarl Girls high School came in second, while Bloemhof Girls High School finished third. South Peninsula High School finished 11th in this category. The mixed competition was won by Parel Vallei, with Bellville finishing second and HTS Drosdy third, with South Peninsula’s mixed team finishing ninth. “The schools from the Eastern and Western Cape really impressed us,” says Lance Coertzen, Twizza group marketing manager. “Witnessing the camaraderie between athletes and schools truly was heartwarming. We commend each and every athlete for their efforts and hope that you will be rewarded with a spot at the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale that will take place at the Bestmed Tuks Athletics Stadium on Saturday 1 February 2020. The overall top 40 boys and girls teams will advance to the Twizza Super School Series Grand Finale next year.

Bok women go down fighting S
pringbok women’s coach Stanley Raubenheimer praised his team’s character despite suffering a 38-15 defeat in their series decider against Scotland at the City Park Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday 5
October, where they were outscored six tries to two. Scotland made better use of their chances in the first half and crossed the tryline three times, while the Springbok women were only able to score a penalty goal, which saw them enter the break 19-3 down. The second half was competitive as Scotland added three tries – the last of which was on the stroke of fulltime – while the Springbok women touched down twice. “The result is obviously disappointing, but I am satisfied with the performance and the character the team showed,” said Raubenheimer. Commenting on the young talent coming through the ranks, Raubenheimer said: “Our main goal with the test matches we played this year was to try to build a group of players that we could work with going forward to the 2021 Rugby World Cup.” Scotland no.8 Jade Konkel scored the first points of the match in the 10th minute after Springbok and WP women’s captain, Babalwa Latsha, some good forward play close to became a handful for Louis McMillan (left) and Lana the line, and Sarah Law (flyhalf) Skeldon as she makes her way to the try line. kicked the conversion to hand PHOTO: RASHIED ISAACS them a 7-0 lead. The Springbok
women hit back with some good phases on attack and they managed to work their way close to the tryline minutes later, but a knock-on denied them from capitalising on the opportunity. The Springbok Women fought until the halftime hooter, and worked their way close to the tryline once again, but they settled for a penalty goal, which saw them enter the break 19-3 down. The visitors came out firing in the second half with Abi Evans navigating her way through a gap in the defence in the opening exchanges, but the Springbok Women cancelled this out in the 49th minute as Aphiwe Ngwevu (replacement centre) scored their first try of the match from a pick-and-go. The successful conversion by Tayla Kinsey (replacement scrumhalf) took their score to 10 points. The hosts continued to fight to add to their score in the dying minutes and camped close to the tryline for several minutes, but they were unable to add to their score, while Scotland made the most of their last try-scoring opportunity with Lloyd crossing the chalk for her second try on the stroke of fulltime after dashing around on the outside for a 38-15 victory. Scorers: Springbok women 15 (3) – Tries: Aphiwe Ngwevu, Aseza Hele; conversions:
Tayla Kinsey; penalty: Shuneez van Heerden. Scotland 38 (19) - tries: Jade Konkel (2), Lisa Thomson, Abi Evans, Rhona Lloyd (2); conversions: Sarah Law (3), Helen Nelson.
