MANDALAY
Platform to help youth SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
A
fter noticing an increase in crime in their area, friends, Sakhile Mahlaba and Cleo Zini decided to roll up their sleeves and face the challenge head-on. In April, the pair initiated the Mandalay Montclair Youth Development (MMYD), a structure that seeks to help youth in the two neighbouring areas in the fields of sport, arts and promote community safety. On Thursday 30 June, the duo called a community meeting at Mandalay Primary School to officially introduce the structure and to seek support from the residents. The pair revealed their plans about the area and what they have already achieved. They have been conducting routine patrols with a group of youth in the mornings. They also escort morning commuters to the trains and bus stations. The structure is not there to replace police
or take over work done by any law enforcement agencies. “Our mandate is to be visible to the residents of Mandalay. We are sick and tired of the hooligans ruling our streets,” Mahlaba explained. A great part of the meeting was about requesting community support. Mahlaba shared their struggles as a group. Among others, he said they wanted bicycles and safety jackets. Since most of their work is done in the dark and at night she said they also wanted torches and two-way radios. The duo also explained they work with youth from different backgrounds with different challenges and their aim is to change their fortunes. Some of the youngsters were involved in crime and drugs before they were recruited into the programme. The duo says they are looking for financial assistance to make sure that members of the MMYD receive a stipend. Zini said a few businessmen and residents
have been helping with soup. “They have been supporting us, telling us that we must not stop. Some even help us when we patrol by driving us around on rainy days. We thank them,” expressed Zini. They appealed to residents to contribute a minimum of R30 a month so that they can get some of the items they need. They also thanked the neighbourhood watch for lending them reflectors and torches. Their plea was welcomed by the residents, some of whom shared their stories of how crime affected them. One resident told the meeting how he and his two neighbours had their cars broken into three nights in a row. They commended the patrolling team and vowed to support it. Resident Trevor Grovers expressed his support for the initiative. He revealed he had been a victim of a break-in, a few years ago. Speaking on behalf of the patrollers, Sandiso Sageka and Enam Mbambani said they enjoy what they are doing.
They are proud to be residents of Mandalay and seeing criminals come to their area to cause havoc breaks their hearts, they said. They invite anyone who wishes to join. Their wish is for MMYD to grow and cover the entire area. They said being part of the group has changed their lives because they have something to look forward to as they are unemployed, even though sometimes the weather is bad. “The group has helped me because I used to do drugs and rob people. But now I have changed. I thank Cleo who brought me into the group,” said Mbambani. All they ask for is that the community make a contribution so that they can cover some of the things they need during winter. Mahlaba encouraged residents to close their house and car windows and to install outside lights in their homes. That, he said makes their job easier.

TOWN CENTRE
Young moms urged to take a stand SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
P
regnant women and young mothers gathered at the Mitchell’s Plain Town Centre Library to learn and share their experiences during a Teen Moms Career Expo on Friday 28 June. The expo was organised by newly launched Intyatyambo Yesizwe TeenMom, a community organisation that works towards the alleviation of poverty by motivating young girls who fall pregnant to go back to school to be in a better position to take care of themselves and their babies. The event was attended by representatives from various organisations including the job placement group Harambee, the Department of Social Development, motivational speakers and Ikamva Labantu. Founder Ntombesizwe Basso said they run workshops and empowerment sessions for the girls. After welcoming everyone, Basso addressed the girls and told them that they still matter. She told them that having babies at a younger age should no deter them from following their dreams. “I want to tell you that your baby should not abort your future,” Basso said. She told them her wish is for them to not depend on social grant money but to wake up and do something about their lives. “I want you to end up contributing to the economy positively,” she encouraged them. Despite its infancy stage, the organisation already has some challenges. These include premises and financial support. But that does not stop Basso from dreaming big. She wishes to expand the organisation to more Cape Flats areas. “My future plans include having clubs in their townships because some of them (girls) come from Philippi, Khayelitsha and Mitchell’s Plain,” she explained. Basso said having clubs in different areas would mean that members do not have to travel to Mitchell’s Plain. Octavia Peterson from the Department of Social Development told the gathering
Young mothers with Ntombesizwe Basso the founder of Intyatyambo Yesizwe TeenMom during the expo. about different programmes they run to help the community. Peterson advised mothers to visit local branches to enquire about the programmes. Ikamva Labantu coordinator Phumla Ndaba said she was glad to be a part of the event to talk to all the “naive and young” mothers. Her message for them was about choices people make in life and the impact they have later on in life. “You must have a role model from the same area you come from. Ask them how they did it when that person is successful,” Ndaba said, urging the young women to find local role models they can look up to, who pulled through despite the challenges they may have faced. Ikamva Labantu is a registered non-profit organisation that works with the community’s seniors and children (after school). They do community empowerment and upliftment initiatives. Young mothers Zimkhitha Mazibongo (21), from Khayelitsha and Astrit Du Plessis (20) and Claudia Jomkers (21) from Mitchell’s Plain said they felt great about being
part of the event and that it gave them a platform to share their experiences about their pregnancy and how they found out about it, they said. Mazibongo, who is a mother to a sixmonth-old baby, said her wish is to go back to school. She said attending the event meant getting information on how to apply for funding as she no longer has parents. “I am also here to get more motivation and more information because I feel like I need it,” she said.

LENTEGEUR
Workshop tackles land problems SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
C
ommunity development and land use were at the centre of discussion during a community workshop held at the Lentegeur sub-council office on Saturday 29 June. The workshop was organised by the Mitchell’s Plain United Residents Association (MURA) – a community organisation that seeks to raise community challenges – in partnership with Development Action Group (DAG), an organisation that deals with all land and housing-related matters, ensuring that the people are at the centre of development. The gathering was attended by various community organisations such as Mandalay Montclair Business Forum, Home Seekers Association of South Africa. The meeting was chaired by MURA’s deputy chairperson Michael Jacobs. He explained that the aim of the meeting was for the invited organisation to give feedback on the findings from the research they were tasked with by MURA. The research focused on development programmes in Mitchell’s Plain and some parts of Khayelitsha. Jacobs explained the research was about vacant pieces of land and its ownership. He said they tasked DAG because of their expertise in the subject. “We as MURA do not want to duplicate the process as there are a lot of developments that are happening,” Jacobs explained.
Attendees listening attentively.

Crystal West, programme manager at DAG, did a brief Powerpoint presentation dubbed “Reimagining Mitchell’s Plain”. Her presentation touched on a few aspects such as what she labelled as assets in the area. She described those as role players in the economy of a specific area, Mitchell’s Plain in this instance. West made mention of the crucial role
churches, mosques, residents (educated and uneducated) could play in the economy where they were given land. She explained these are important because they make a contribution in the economy and they qualify for land allocation. She explained the necessity to know all the above details because it makes it easier to add to or see on the database.
“The aim of identifying who is who is to make it easy to call people for services because we know who does what,” she explained. In her presentation, she encouraged attendees to take a stand, unite and bring the change they desire for their area. Querida Saal, a researcher at DAG, shared some information about budgets for various areas in Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha. She spoke about priority areas in which money is budgeted for. However, she explained to the attendees that there were not much agriculture and mining activities in Mitchell’s Plain. “(But) I can safely say, based on the research, businesses are doing well in Mitchell’s Plain,” she said. Attendees were given an opportunity to comment and ask questions. They also raised an issue of multiple housing waiting lists that are doing the rounds. They asked about the original state of the lists. There was also a question about the City allegedly selling land to private business owners. Chairperson and founding member for Home Seekers Association of South Africa, Morrice Kok, said such workshops played a great role in communities. He called for the education of residents regarding processes to be followed with regards to many issues including housing. Kok stressed that most residents do not really know the role of the councillors. “Meetings like this are important but implementation is more important,” he said.
Star dancer off to Joburg THABANG KUAHO @thab_journo The Red Bull Dance Your Style took place at the Fire and Ice Hotel in Tamboerskloof on Sunday 30 June and dance culture fanatics chose their winners. Lee Shane (28) from Mitchell’s Plain wowed the crowd with his versatile dance moves and was crowned the winner. He will have the opportunity to compete against top dancers at the South African finals next month. He said the competition was amazing and everything went well for him. “I takes pride in dancing and I think that is why the crowd loved my dancing. I am also versatile; something that always gives me an advantage,” he said. The young dancer said the reason he entered the competition was because of the ultimate prize – to battle with some of the world’s best dancers in France at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Competition later this year.
Passenger Sizes
“Getting to battle in France would be the ultimate opportunity for me. Some of the best dancers in the world are in France. “Imagine having someone from a regular community in South Africa to battle there. It is a wonderful opportunity.” To prepare for the Joburg finals, Shane spends most of his time practicing. “I do everything to ensure that I am ready for the finals. Sometimes I just randomly dance in the streets just to see people’s reactions and find out if I can impress them. That gives me an idea of whether I am preparing well for the competition.” He has won many dance competitions with the Iconic Urban Dance Awards being the latest. Shane started dancing professionally in 2007. He has learned a lot about the street dance culture through other dancers and influencers. At the moment, he is working with film production companies to get incubated in movies that require dancers.

PELICAN PARK
Singer hopes to heal people through song SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic
A
35-year-old Pelican Park resident, Latheem Gabriel, is hoping to inspire people through his newly released single “Seed of Unease”. He described the single as an improved version of his 2017 Extended Play record (EP) “The Waiting Room”. In an interview with People’s Post, Gabriel said he started singing when he was eight and attended Heathfield High School. At the school, he did music as a subject and says that helped him in developing himself as a musician. While he was doing music at school, he also participated in singing competitions outside of the school. “When I was growing up, I used to do little competitions such as The Voice in the malls,” he shared.
Gabriel adds that his persistent spirit kept him going and he entered South African Idols three times but never made it to a notable stage. He also tried his luck in The Voice South Africa which also never took him anywhere. After finishing matric, he studied graphic design and films, and worked in the non-profit organisation sector for 10 years, he shared. Even though he was not doing music on a full-time basis, he was still singing part-time. He described his sound as alternative Indie and says the song is a dance version of the EP version. He said the song is personal. According to him, the song is, “a lyrically-charged song that looks at the conversation between older and younger self. It hints at the long term effects a dysfunctional home can have on a child and the healing that can be achieved
through connecting with one’s inner child.” By writing this song, he said, he hopes it will help people to find healing. “I would like to inspire people, my goal is for people to connect with what I write and hopefully end up less lonely,” he said. Gabriel says he wrote and recorded the song here in Cape Town and the final production of it was done in Durban. He said he is not signed under any record label except for Sheer music publishing. His message for his fans is for them to rise above any circumstances they may find themselves in. “I encourage people to be honest and authentic about who they are as individuals and artists,” he said. He added the song is available on iTunes and all major online streaming stores.
Latheem Gabriel’s wish is for his fans to find healing in his music.
Course to improve skills and build community SIPHESIHLE NOTWABAZA @SihleMusic There is still space for interested community members to enrol for a Madrassah Teacher Training course. Madrassah is a registered non-profit organisation and a community centre that offers a wide range of courses for youth and residents.
Some of the courses are intensely Islamic based, while others are ideal for anyone from any religion. Among others, the courses offer skills in fundraising as well as in social media. According to Abdurahman May, principal at Madrassah Tul Madina in Beacon Valley, he has been an employee at the Madrassah since its inception in 2010. He says they have different, qualified and experienced facilita-
tors who offer the courses. He urges people to apply. “A person needs to have finished matric and wants to assist to develop the community,” he said. May says as the means of ploughing back to the community, some of the graduates are now facilitators. They will be part of the training team in the upcoming course which he says is a pilot project. According to him, the centre seeks to fight
the ills of the community and bring change. “This is our way of contributing to the community, fighting poverty, gangsterism and drugs,” he added. The course is free. The organisation will take care of the training staff and it is due to take place between Monday 5 and Thursday 29 August between 08:30 to 12:30. ‘Work In Progress’ on show at the Comedy Club The one-man show of Nik Rabinowitz called Work In Progress will be on at the Cape Town Comedy Club on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 July. The title may be misleading though, as the show is well written, fully memorised and hilarious. When it comes to side-splitting stories about hair transplants, ill-conceived mountain rescues, and the pitfalls of genetic testing, Rabinowitz has it all figured out, written down, and ready for delivery to all the eager audiences who attend. Except, Rabinowitz is still trying to fig-

Safety should be top priority When visiting a bereaved family in Uitsig some weeks ago, I was struck by how gangsterism, criminality and criminal impunity are undermining the sense of safety and security of families and entire communities. While I was there, I was told not to stand outside the boundary walls of the house as I would be in the “firing zone”. I was told that the abandoned building in front of the bereaved family’s home was often used as a hiding spot for rival gangs before a shoot out. I was told that residents of this particular street knew the cars and license plates of each resident because if a “different” car pulled up, this could very well mean that bullets were about to start flying. Uitsig and the experiences of this family are a microcosm of a rapidly deteriorating situation in many communities across the province, particularly in the so-called 23

gang stations. It is for this reason that I am working tirelessly to put together, in partnership with my department, communities and other levels of government; a comprehensive and sustainable set of measures aimed at building safer communities. However, we cannot begin building safer communities if the perpetrators of crime are allowed to operate without consequence. For this reason, the provincial government has supported the call from communities to deploy the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), not for purposes of cheap political point-scoring, but because the first responsibility of the state is to provide the conditions for the safety of its citizens. The deployment of the army as a peacekeeping force on the Cape Flats would free up police to do investigative work that will help put syndicates, gang leaders, drug dealers and murderers who terrorise our people daily, behind bars. The argument that the SANDF is not trained to fight crime is simply a red-herring. An import part of the work I do is engaging with communities to determine what makes them feel unsafe. What has been made clear to me is that communities feel a lack of police presence and visibility. They are frustrated by the time it takes for police to arrive on the scene and they are angry with the inequitable allocation of police resources. Our communities’ sense of safety and trust in policing will only be restored when police resources are mobilised consistently. Unfortunately, this is not yet the case. Despite this, I want to acknowledge the brave officers who work tirelessly, often putting their lives at risk, to make our province safer. Many of my intended measures as the (provincial) minister of community safety aim to support the great work done by police. Some of these include collaborating with police and Metro Police on the neighbourhood watches programme and Community Policing Forums (CPFs) to strengthen community trust, support and cooperation. Above all, we need to find creative and sustainable ways to prevent our young people from a life of gangsterism. We need them to see that a life as a gangster is not a desirable path. When visiting communities across the province, I often notice young children playing without adult supervision, some during school hours. These children are often targeted by gangsters and drug dealers as runners or shooters. We need a “Whole of Society Approach” to rebuild safer communities. We can no longer turn a blind eye and say that such matters are not our responsibility. As we approach the upcoming CPF elections, I look forward to interacting with candidates who will build fruitful relationships with both their local neighbourhood watches and police to root out crime. In turn, individuals who notice crime must immediately report this to the police. Meanwhile, my department will continue to provide oversight over police to ensure that they are a trustworthy institution, working for the good of the community. After one month in my role as minister for community safety, I believe that through coordinated efforts, using all of the tools at our disposal, we can get the province back on track and drastically reduce the influence of gang criminality. Our commitment in this regard is to continue working to restore relationships and rebuild trust between communities and those stakeholders tasked with keeping them safe. Reach your saving goals As we approach the middle of the year, we are presented with an opportunity to reflect on our new year financial resolutions and to gauge whether our financial goals are still on track. Saving and investing should form an important part of your goals and money management journey. By regularly revisiting your progress, you can see if you are on track to meet your financial goals. However, after assessing your goals and seeing that you are not where you had anticipated to be by this time, you should look at how you can do better. You shouldn’t feel discouraged if your savings goals for this year are not on track, you still have six months to meet them. These are some tips to make it happen: . Record your expenses: Keep track of all your expenses. From that cup of coffee, lunch at work, data and airtime. This initial step will help you see how much you spend and will give you an indication of where you need to reduce. This will help you free up some funds which can be channelled towards your savings; . Review your bank statement: Spend time looking at your bank statement to see where you need to cut expenses. This will need to be done with great attention as it will help you identify areas that may be causing the monthly expense leakage. Once you have identified the
leakages, you need to act immediately to allow more funds to be channelled towards meeting your financial goal. . Review your budget: Once you have the data from recording your expenses and reviewing your bank statement, you need to relook your monthly budget and amend it in a way that will enable you to meet your goals faster. It is important to ensure that your budget outlines all your expenses as this will identify gaps where you will need to limit overspending. Your budget should ideally include weekly and monthly expenses. For example, if you work outside town and go home every second month, this should be factored so that it doesn’t dent your budget when you have to go home. . Contribute extra: When finances allow, it is advisable to contribute extra towards your saving. This will help you meet your savings goal earlier. For example, when you receive a recognition payment at work, it would be worthwhile to allocate some of the money towards savings. Constantly reminding yourself about what you are saving for will encourage you to continue saving. Factor in your savings goal into your monthly budget to ensure that you make the adequate contribution to be able to meet your goal. ESTER OCHSE, FNB product specialist
Communities can intervene The constant reports and incidents of social ills and crime on the Cape Flats is of great concern. Residents cannot wait for the minister of police or social development to tell them how they will help or how people should try and fix their own communities; as if there are no people who are wise enough and capable enough, in the particular area. More police or greater law enforcement visibility only serves to minimise or keep the problem of crime under control. The problem, however, still exists; and still has to be adequately dealt with. It seems as if residents of the Cape Flats have become insensitive to the pain and suffering in their communities. Many actually have an attitude of “it’s just another murder, it’s just another rape, it’s just another stabbing, it’s just another shooting” as if the victim’s life is of little value. These things are often merely ascribed to poverty and poor social circumstances. Is childhood murder however caused by poverty? Is rape caused by poverty? Does poverty actually cause women and child abuse? Is poverty really the cause of alcohol abuse? Is poverty really the cause of drug abuse? Is poverty really the root cause or primary problem, or is it about people’s particular response to their lack of financial and other resources? Has poverty become an easy excuse for the community’s own faults and failures? What is the actual reason why these and other evils that are so prevalent in these neighbourhoods today? The change people desire to see in their areas, actually flow from a clean and pure heart. As such, it is therefore clear that it is not social justice or social
activism that is needed, but godly mobilisation is required. It is, however, a serious indictment against churches especially, that they are part of those who express public outrage over terror attacks in other countries, yet their voices are silent and their arms are folded with regard to the killings and other evils taking place in their own backyard. They actually need to repent for not doing enough to help communities become better and safer. As long as churches mostly shine the light where there already is light, the darkness will remain unchanged and never be enlightened. All the churches in a particular area need to close their doors for at least one Sunday, and go and reach out to the people outside their walls. A few minutes of activism or charity per year is however not sufficient for the Cape Flats. What it needs is at least one full day of mobilisation from morning till night, to uplift communities from the inside out. Although the ideal should be for this to be done at least once a quarter, perhaps the public holiday of 24 September should henceforth be declared such a day for the Cape Flats. If a prize of R2m or even the Nobel Peace Prize were up for grabs to an individual or organisation who were most effective at addressing the social ills and crime in neighbourhoods on the Cape Flats in 2019, would that stimulate them to better mobilise themselves and develop more sustainable solutions for these areas? Should a material reward, however, be the best motivation for making such a major contribution to society? R.BARTES, Manenberg
We need morals and values of yester-year When I was growing up, we could walk the streets without concern for getting robbed or stabbed or killed. We walked everywhere we needed to be and if it was too far, we would take public transport. I would not be as brave to do that now. The rate at which people are getting robbed and killed means no one and no place is safe anymore. There are many ways in which times were tough in the 60s and 70s, but at
least we lived. Our lives were not cut short. These days we are burying our children and grandchildren in the prime of their lives. Morals and values have changed and maybe it is time to bring that back. To bring prayer and the Bible back into schools and our homes. The change should start with us and it should start at home. Bring back the values from the past. PAUL WILLIAMS Email
