BUSINESS EMPOWERMENT
Trainees make the cut SAMANTHA LEE-JACOBS @Samantha_Lee121
A
group of 20 Mitchell’s Plain hairdressers have started a training course through the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative. After completing local training programmes presented by ward 75 councillor Joan Woodman and late ward 82 councillor Sheval Arendse, the trainees are now participating in further business training. Last year, Woodman funded trainees from
her ward and Arendse also funded trainees on hairdresser training. “We have an established relationship with the Whitaker Peace and Development Initiative after Forest Whitaker visited Mitchell’s Plain last year, and also met myself and premier Alan Winde and education minister Debbie Schäfer to discuss how we can work together,” says Mitchell’s Plain constituency head for the DA, Ricardo Mackenzie. The five month business training started last month. The training includes how to start a busi-
ness, basic business skills, finance skills and how to sustain a business. Some of the participants will also get a cash injection on completion of the course. The group of 10 women from ward 75 completed a hairdressing course to improve their chances of employment. “As the ward councillor, I had the honour and privilege to afford 10 young ladies from ward 75 the opportunity to attend a ‘Business in a Box’ hairdressing course during the month of November. “This was part of the ward allocation bud-
get for the 2019/2020 budget year,” Woodman says. The women are aged between 19 and 35 and were randomly selected from a database. On completion of the course they will receive a starter kit to start their own mobile styling businesses. “This is a business in a box that empowers the participants to start their own business. This was done in 2018 and now in 2019, the fruits thereof encouraged me to do so again,” says Woodman. V Continued on page 2.

he streets of Woodstock will be a hive of activity when Open Streets returns to the area on Sunday 23 February. For the fourth time, several roads along Victoria Road (Main Road), between Roodebloem Road and Searle Street will “carfree”. The event is organised by the non-profitorganisation (NPO) Open Streets Cape Town (OSCT) to bring people together to experience the street as a safe, vibrant public space where everyone is welcome and all ages can play, dance, cycle, skate, explore and connect with each other. The programme is helping to bridge social and spatial divides in a segregated city where the street environment is often hostile to people. “Open Streets Woodstock will transform one of the most congested and chaotic stretches of road in Cape Town into a large urban playground, making a bold statement about the potential for our streets and public spaces to become more peoplefriendly and inclusive,” says Rebecca Campbell, managing director for Open Streets. The theme for this year is “Play your Part” and the roads will be closed from 09:00 until 14:00. Residents; local businesses; NGOs; faith communities; and sports, arts and cultural groups are invited to use the platform to showcase projects and strengthen networks. “It’s not just a passive event with entertainment, but rather a chance for all participants to help create the special atmosphere, and see how everyone has the responsibility and potential to contribute to positive change in their neighbourhoods,” says Campbell. Local parks and businesses will be open and there will be a handful of food stalls. So far, activities registered include a live broadcast by Bush Radio, a Street Store by The Haven Night Shelter, film showcase by TEDx Cape Town, martial arts demonstrations, a dance cypher, music performances, arts and crafts, Zumba, kids bike rides, Cape Town Tourism doing a virtual reality activation and more. OSCT encourages anyone interested to participate to get in touch, as there’s still time to register an activity, which should be non-commercial and in line with some simple guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety. V To register, contact info@openstreets.co.za or message OSCT on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

V Eastridge: On Sunday 9 February at 16:15, officers were on patrol in Don Carlos Street when they stopped and searched a suspicious-looking man. T
he provincial department of health is calling on residents to support Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staff who risk their lives every day to save others. This comes after another attack on EMS staff, this time in Kewtown, on Thursday 23 January. “Public support will be crucial to the work performed by our EMS staff who render a critical health care service, and to keep them safe,” says the health department in a statement. Three attacks took place in a matter of days at the end of last month, prompting the department to call on residents for help. Premier Alan Winde says: “What kind of society are we living in when you have an emergency and you cannot be assisted and helped because you live in a red zone and the paramedics first need to wait for the po-
lice to escort them to you. “We all know how precious time is when your mother has had a heart attack or someone is sick and needs help.” Winde says several thousands of people are affected by this, living in the 10 crime hot spots labelled as red zones. These include Khayelitsha, Tafelsig, Beacon Valley, Philippi, Manenberg and several other areas on the Cape Flats. In the most recent attack, EMS staff responded to a call at 03:00 and were escorted to the patient’s home by the local police. Although the Kewtown area has not been declared a red zone, the crew requested to be escorted by police as a safety precaution. While inside the home of the patient, the ambulance’s window was forced open and a Lifepak 15 cardiac monitor, worth an estimated R300 000, was stolen from the vehicle. The other two incidents happened on Sunday 19 January.

In the first incident a female paramedic sustained an eye injury after a stone shattered the ambulance’s windscreen in Ravensmead, in the early hours of the morning on their way to collect and transport a patient to Tygerberg Hospital. Later that day, paramedics were robbed of their personal belongings while attending to a patient in Atlantis. The department says safety is everyone’s responsibility and that everyone should help keep safe those who stand in service of the people of the province. The role played by EMS staff is paramount, with more than 6 400 call outs in just one weekend in the province. The bulk of these calls were for assault, labour, respiratory, pain and accidents. Residents can show their support by sharing their messages and adding their name to the pledge. V Make your pledge at https://www.westerncape.gov.za/ems-pledge

Hand in unwanted, illegal firearms A
nyone in possession of an unlicenced or unwanted firearm has until Sunday 31 May to hand it in at any participating police station. The national amnesty initiative started on Sunday 1 December and within the first month, thousands of firearms and ammunition had already been handed in at police stations across the country. “As firearms are the instruments commonly used in the commission of crime, especially violent crimes, it is very encouraging that people have taken advantage of this amnesty period,” says Gen Khehla Sitole, national police commissioner, in a statement. By the end of December, 1 465 guns and 14 861 rounds of ammunition had been handed in. The firearms included 1 248 hand guns, 75 shotguns and 142 rifles. “While the majority of the firearms have been handed in for destruction, we have also received applications for the relicensing of firearms whose licenses have been terminated in terms of Section 28 of the Firearm Control Act for 264 firearms including that of 247 hand guns (revolvers and pis-
tols), eight shotguns and nine rifles,” says Sitole. “People who are illegally in possession of firearms and ammunition are encouraged to take advantage of this amnesty period to hand over such guns without fear of prosecution. However, any person that hands over a firearm that has been used in the commission of a crime will not enjoy such exoneration.” All firearms that have been or are being handed in will undergo ballistic testing to ensure that they have not been used in the commission of a crime or crimes before they can be considered for destruction. The South African Police Service has made adequate provision for the safe-keeping of all firearms handed in. . There are nine centralised storage facilities in all provinces which have been subjected to risk assessment. . Designated amnesty officials and police officials have been subjected to thorough screening and vetting, and only those that met the identified criteria have been appointed to handle amnesty firearms
handed in. A detective investigative team has been established to investigate cases of firearms linked to crimes. When the amnesty period ends, firearms will be audited for the purpose of destruction. The process for the destruction of firearms will then be followed to destroy amnesty firearms, firearm parts and ammunition as it was done when the police smelted over 20 thousand illegal firearms on Tuesday 5 November last year. “We are confident that more people will come forward with illegal and unwanted guns given that during the festive period we have received this many guns so far,” says Sithole. V An inquiry desk at the Central Firearm Register call centre has been established to handle all enquiries related to the amnesty. Call 012 353 6111.

Artscape reveals year-long programme KAYLYNNE BANTOM @bantomkaylynne
“B
ringing people together”. This was the key phrase that was echoed at the launch of the Artscape’s yearlong education programme held on Tuesday 11 February. The day also marked the 30th anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela’s release from Victor Verster prison, and those who attended the launch paid homage to Madiba by singing the national anthem. Artscape CEO, Marlene le Roux says: “The year-long programme equally assists with the cultural institution’s transformation trajectory that has, as its aim, to spotlight
that which was hidden or marginalised. Thus projects such as the Artscape Women and Humanity Festival, the Youth Jazz, the isiXhosa Set Work production, Buzani ku Bawo, the ArtsAbility Festival as well as celebration of national holidays, speaks to the transformation mandate.” Le Roux further explained that these programmes seek to remove barriers that could stand in the way of our diverse nation’s access to the arts. Artscape works in conjunction with various partners including the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape government, among others. On the cards for the year are programmes that seek to address some of the socio-eco-
nomic challenges facing the youth, such as distance, transport, lack of available funds and disability. Le Roux says: “By giving participants access to world-class stages with professional lighting and production values, our programme inspires young people’s creative dreams, helps them to grow as performers and artists, and drives employment.” She added: “Our Schools Arts Festival, as a mere example, will see learners from about 15 schools deliver a programme of choral music, theatre and contemporary dance, while the High School Drama Festival engenders latent creative talent.” The launch, in true art fashion, created a platform for various artists to showcase their talents. A duo from the Cape Opera Company entertained the crowd with their unique voices. The launch was followed by the quarterly and first Lunch Hour Concert for the year, featuring Cape Town Opera and the Unmute Dance Company.

turned to Cape Town where he was appointed as the religious leader, Imam of the Surrey Estate community and he currently still serves in that capacity. “Shaykh Abrahams has a passion for education and was the principal of the Darul Arqam Islamic Institute of the MJC. “After serving in this capacity for six years he established the Darul Islam Islamic High School and later also established a girls only primary and high school in Surrey Estate. “Like his passion for education he also has a passion for helping those in need. He established the Darul Islam Zakah Fund, a charity fund that provides much needed assistance tot the poor and underprivileged,” says Dante. Abrahams’ passion has taken him beyond the borders of South Africa and he was head of a delegation who travelled to Somalia and Syria to provide much needed relief. Locally he headed a much needed water campaign in Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape, one of the driest regions in all of South Africa.
