Honouring fearless women Women came together to celebrate their courage at the Fearlessly Female Women’s Day event held at Zevenwacht Wine Estate on Friday 9 August. The event, presented by TygerBurger, People’s Post sister publication, and Spec-Savers, featured celebrity chef Jenny Morris, MC Mel Jones and a fashion installation by Ruff Tung. A portion of the funds raised at the event was in aid of the Women4Women organisation, founded by former Miss SA Cindy Nel. Polishing literacy skills RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

T

he Sozo Foundation in Vrygrond hopes its new literacy competition, Battle of the Words, will contribute to the improvement of children’s literacy skills. The foundation’s educentre recently launched the competition. According to Wendy Abrahams, programme manager at the foundation, the competition is divided into four categories: the spelling bee, essay writing, poetry and the spoken word.

The competition, which is set to become an annual event, has attracted the support of several organisations. Abrahams explains: “We opened the competition to other organisations. Afrika Tikkun and Ikamva Youth are now partnering with us. Learners from these groups are participating in the competition. “We have also partnered with FunDza. It assists with the adjudication. The Department of social development contributes towards the awards for the winners.” More than 100 learners entered the competition. The programme, aimed at getting

learners interested in reading and writing, has been a huge success. “The purpose of this initiative was to encourage learners to love words, to read more and to express themselves through words,” said Abrahams. “The submissions have been of a very high standard, especially the spoken word – surprisingly – because it was authentic. They spoke from the heart.” Recognising the potential in entrants, Abrahams urged two learners to put their skills to the test in another competition. “I encouraged two learners to also enter

the Community Chest Election Bursary Competition and they were placed in the top eight. This was an essay writing competition,” she explains. While the submissions of essays, poems and the spoken word have closed, the foundation is still holding more heats of the spelling bee and it should be completed this week. The finale of the competition is set to take place on Thursday 26 September at a venue to be confirmed at a later date. Business as usual at cableway NOMZAMO YUKU @NomzamoYuku Table Mountain Cableway is back in business. It opened on Monday 12 August, a week earlier than expected. Annual maintenance and routine checks, begun on Monday 8 July, was scheduled for completion on Monday 19 August. Managing director Wahida Parker announced the reopening of the cableway at a media briefing at the popular tourist destination on Wednesday 7 August. She invites guests to visit and enjoy the views once again. Parker applauds the team of technicians for their good work and for finishing ahead of schedule. She says the annual maintenance is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and staff and to abide by the rules regulating the cableway. “Annual maintenance is non-negotiable and ensures we can continue to safely and efficiently showcase our beautiful mountain to more than one million visitors each year – a responsibility and honour that we do not take lightly,” Parker says. Technicians say the work went smoothly despite unpredictable weather. Technical manager Emile Streicher says

they replaced the heel and haul ropes, and also tested and replaced the load-bearing components on the cabins. The mechanical overhaul of the rotating floors and cabin door mechanisms in the ca-

ble cars were also completed, as well as the maintenance of the hydraulic and brake system. He attributes the good work to great team spirit from all who were involved.

On 13 July a pedestrian’s wrangled body was removed from the train tracks.

HEATHFIELD | RETREAT

Rail station battle continues A

total of four fatal incidents have taken place on the railway tracks between Heathfield and Retreat stations since the beginning of the year and ward 72 councillor, Kevin Southgate, is calling for intervention. He elaborates on his urgent request to the railway service provider: “The unreliability of the Metrorail train service has given rise to illegal taxi operations at Heathfield station, which has raised the ire of the local residents. This has resulted in passengers disembarking from the Cape Flats line and walking to Retreat station. Since there is no fencing from the level crossing in the direction of Retreat station, commuters now walk along the tracks instead of using the road.”

He adds: “There is a section where the canal emerges from below the tracks and so the only way for people to pass over is by walking right next to the tracks.” Southgate feels that both the western and eastern sides of the track should have been fenced off to the public, but as it stands only the western side has been fenced off; still allowing for the public to enter the tracks. After continuous attempts to have it fenced off, still, there is no action intended to be taken by Metrorail. “Our response remains that the purpose of railway fencing is primarily to demarcate boundaries and that most fencing (even palisades) will not deter wilful entry,” said Riana Scott, marketing and communication

Hub to boost SMMEs The City of Cape Town has officially opened a business hub at Strand Street Concourse, which was launched on Thursday 8 August. According to a statement, the hub which will be run by the Enterprise Development Unit is a one-stop-shop for business support services. It is designed to help reduce the administrative barriers accessible to small, medium and micro-enterprises (SMMEs). Mayor Dan Plato says: “Through this centre, we want to contribute towards a business-friendly environment where we will reduce barriers and other red tape measures.” James Vos, Mayco member for economic opportunities and asset management, says the hub is a platform for designing solutions that will make small businesses more competitive and resilient. Vos says the City is committed to growing the economy and has been working with SMMEs and partner organisations for many years to ensure that this important part of the economy thrives. “SMMEs are the lifeblood of cities and the engines that fuel economic growth,” he says.

Police discovered 991 mandrax tablets at a premises in Orchestra Street, Steenberg on Wednesday 7 August at about 18:30. “Our efforts to rid communities from illegal drug trades paid off when members of the Anti-Gang Unit followed up on information of alleged drug dealings taking place in the area,” said police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, in a statement. A 55-year-old suspect was arrested on drug-related charges. The suspect will make a court appearance in Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once he has been charged.

manager at Metrorail. According to Scott, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) tends to maintenance, repairs or installation of fencing annually in terms of urgency or necessity, and implemented according to available funding. Southgate, however, feels that as the fourth accident in the same vicinity, fencing the track is a matter of necessity. “This is now the fourth accident within a year, not to mention the arson attacks on trains parked off at the siding,” he says. While this particular concern is not a priority for Prasa currently, Scott advises the public not to place themselves in danger and rather use authorised crossings to reach their destinations.

lose to 100 residents from Grassy Park and Retreat planted 35 trees at Princess Vlei to mark Women’s Day and International Day of the World’s Indigenous People on Friday 9 August. Emma Oliver, secretary of the Princess Vlei Forum, said the organisation hosted its tree planting event on Friday in line with the organisation’s mandate – to restore the area which has a long history and heritage. The forum is committed to restoring the land and the water body around Princess Vlei which is a place where people want to spend time safely and happily. Some of the speakers at the event included Tanya Gradwell, who spoke and read a poem about Krotoa, a translator working for the Dutch during the formation of the cape colony. PEOPLE'S POST | RETREAT Tuesday, 13 August 2019

Officers arrested 176 taxi drivers for outstanding warrants during four operations in Delft, Manenberg, Mfuleni and Kraaifontein.

CITY

Bumper week for traffic department O

ver four days, officers arrested taxi drivers for 1596 outstanding warrants totalling nearly R3 million. The first week in August was huge for The City of Cape Town’s Traffic officers who made 300 arrests in total, impounding 134 vehicles and 242 cellphones, and issuing 27 468 fines for various offences. General enforcement activities resulted in the arrests of 16 motorists for drunk driving, 13 motorists for reckless and negligent driving, 84 motorists who had outstanding warrants, 10 motorists on a range of other charges. But it was Operation Reclaim that saw warrant dodgers hit the skids during four operations in Delft, Manenberg, Mfuleni and Kraaifontein. Between Thursday 1 August and Sunday 4 August, officers arrested 176 taxi drivers for 1 596 outstanding warrants totaling R2 742 470.

One of them, aged 50, has 167 outstanding warrants to the value of R230 900. He was also found in possession of a firearm with an expired licence. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith says that the traffic department continues to be overrun by complaints about the behaviour of taxi drivers. “The taxi industry needs to take responsibility for its actions. I urge errant drivers to pay their outstanding fines, and to start showing greater regard for the rules of the road,” he said. “In recent months, the Cape Town Traffic Service has increased its level of operations in this area, and so it is only a matter of time before you’re caught. “We are also about to increase the size of the Taxi Enforcement Unit, which will significantly improve our ability to respond to the ongoing contempt for the rules of the road by the public transport sector,” said

Smith. Elsewhere on the roads, the Metro Police arrested 42 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a series of vehicle checkpoints across the city. They also arrested 12 suspects for possession of drugs, and one for the illegal possession of ammunition. On Thursday 1 August, officers attached to the Metro Police Property Crime Unit were alerted to drug dealing taking place from a red Hyundai at the corner of Main and Station roads in Mowbray. Officers spotted the vehicle and searched, revealing 55 bankies of dagga, four cellphones and R2 250 in cash in a black backpack. The driver and passenger, aged 25 and 24, were arrested for possession of drugs and dealing in drugs and detained at Mowbray Police Station. On the highways, Metro Police officers came to the aid of 54 motorists who had expe-

rienced mechanical breakdowns. Officers stood down at the locations on the N2, R300, Spine Road, Baden Powell Drive and the N1 until the motorists were able to get going again, to prevent them from falling victim to crime. “We renew our appeal to motorists to please ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that they have enough fuel to get to their destination. “It’s also important to keep a spare wheel, water, as well as oil in the vehicle, as these are the most common reasons cited for breakdowns,” added Smith. He reminded motorists to save the number for the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre on their cellphone so that they could call for help in the event of a breakdown or an emergency. V Residents of the City of Cape Town can call 107 in an emergency using a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

Greasing the wheels for cohesion There was huge excitement and celebration among Hout Bay residents at the official opening of the Eyethu Hout Bay Skate Park on Friday 26 July. An initiative of the Rotary Club of Hout Bay (RCHB), the state-of-the-art facility was built for existing and new skateboarders, as well as the youth from the diverse communities in the area. John Winship from RC Club Newlands said that the joy of skateboarding was that it was a low-cost activity, involving both young and old, where much of the equipment was recycled, and hence, affordable to many. Winship said: “Above all, it is enjoyed by all the communities in Hout Bay, including Imizamo Yethu, Hangberg and the Valley.” He adds that the establishment of the park has brought about an affirmation of togetherness, shared ownership and partnership between communities. “Eyethu is a Nguni word meaning ‘ours’, so of course it all ties in quite nicely. The park serves as a safe space for youth to engage with one another.” Construction took place over the past six months and cost a total of R1.5m. The Skate Park area is 950m² in total and is designed to accommodate both novices and professionals with a bowl, ramps in different siz-

and RCHB after one of the Rotary club members, Keith Bull, saw a child almost killed after skating down a side road and into the main road. He suggested the idea of a Rotary project on the Hout Bay organised Facebook page, and sparked the realisation of a dream for the skateboarding community.

After running into problems with funding for the construction of the skate park in 2017, Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages (CCPB) responded to the RCHB public pleas for corporate support. CCPB then approached Rotary Club Newlands, their corporate social investment (CSI) partner that works closely with the company on major community projects, to connect with the Hout Bay Rotary team and offer the funding shortfall. “Coca-Cola Peninsula Beverages takes community development and enrichment very seriously. “It brings us great joy to be able to play a role in providing a safe place for communities to enjoy this recreational activity,” said Priscilla Urquhart, public affairs and communications manager for CCPB. The park sets a precedent for other local communities to follow, drive and lead their own public spaces and aids the community in creating their own crime prevention strategies, through unconventional sports, youth leadership and after-school training programmes. Funders included the Rotary Clubs of Hout Bay, Newlands, Claremont, Totnes England, Vilshofen Germany, Club 790 and the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, while the site was provided by the City of Cape Town.

WOMEN’S MONTH

‘Take care of yourselves’ F

inding balance between work and family life in a fast-paced environment can place significant pressure on women, affecting their mental and physical health. In celebration of International Women’s Day, which is observed annually on 9 August, the provincial department of health encourages women to prioritise their health and to work with them to find ways to improve their mental and general well-being. “Finding balance in our competitive society takes a strain on our women and families and by improving the health of women, this,

in turn, enhances the productivity, social and economic participation and development of families. “We are highlighting the importance of prevention and promotion of wellness to build healthy, resilient, wellness-conscious individuals, and families throughout the province,” says Western Cape minister of health, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo. The department highlights the services available to women at its health facilities and women are encouraged to take full advantage of their free access to a range of health servi-

ces available at any public health clinic in the province. The following services are available to women: contraception; pregnancy testing; termination of pregnancy (TOP); antenatal (pre-birth) health care; birth/labour services; post-natal (after-birth) health care; cervical cancer screening; menopause care; tuberculosis (TB) and HIV screening and care; chronic condition care and management; sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening and treatment and youth-friendly clinics. They also offer counselling and screening services, which include referrals for mammograms, information on self-examination for breast cancer, general information regarding nutrition and wellness, sexual abuse and rape counselling; as well as mental health screening, counselling and care. The department’s services are not only limited to more mature women, but also available to young women and girls who are particularly vulnerable living in societies with many social challenges. To empower them, the department has partnered with Nacosa to continue with the Young, Women and Girls programme in the Cape Metro Klipfontein area. This programme, which has been funded for another three years by Global Fund, focuses on increasing retention in school, decreasing the HIV incidence and teenage pregnancy, accelerate prevention to reduce new HIV and TB infections and STIs, decrease gender-based violence and increase economic opportunities for our young girls and women living in the Cape Flats. “To ensure that the department reaches its Healthcare 2030 goal towards becoming more person-centred, a Whole of Society Approach (WOSA) is required whereby all role-players, partners and government bodies work together to ensure that our women and their families healthcare and other social needs are met to ensure a healthier and more well-balanced lifestyle in the home,” says Mbombo. The Community-Based Services unit of the department partners with non-profit

organisations (NPOs) to help women in need find well-balanced lifestyles by utilising Community Healthcare Workers (CHWs) to conduct home assessments and assist in finding suitable healthcare assistance, as well as linkages for the family to local clinics and other government institutions. These home visits by community healthcare workers and healthcare professionals to women and families who are unable to visit their local health facility, form part of a new initiative introduced by the department called the Community Orientated Primary Care (COPC) project. One participant in the COPC project is Sandra Mentoor (67) from Eastridge. She receives a state pension and is the sole breadwinner to a household of five. Mentoor neglected her health to take care of her family and put food on the table. “I was very sceptical when the community health workers knocked on my door to provide home-based healthcare. I had negative experiences from state healthcare which made me avoid going to day hospitals for help,” says Mentoor. “I have diabetes and never took care of my health previously because I had to provide for my family. My neglect led to all my toes being amputated on my right foot which could have been treated and healed with proper care,” Mentoor explained. Because of the CHWs persistence to provide healthcare, Mentoor finally allowed them in her home to start treating her health problem. “Not only did they assist me and got me on the road to recovery, but they managed to link up the rest of my household with the Department of Social Development for assistance and helped to solve educational challenges my grandchildren faced,” says Mentoor. All Women’s Health primary healthcare services are free of charge, and we encourage all women, including young girls, to make use of these services to improve their health status and well-being. V To find out how to make use of these services, visit www.westerncape.gov.za/dept/health or your nearest healthcare facility.

Varsity College netball rises to the occasion T he Independent Institute of Education’s (IIE) Varsity College Cape Town netball first team participated in this year’s University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament at Witwatersrand University recently. The ladies were off to a victorious start as the girls defeated the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) with a 38-31 win. “The girls played fantastically well after being promoted from C to B division. It was important that we got our USSA tour off to a winning start,” says Andrew Howitt, Varsity College Cape Town’s sports coordinator. On the second day of the tournament, the ladies unfortunately lost by the skin of their teeth, 36-35, to the Durban University of

Technology (DUT). On day three the team made a comeback with a convincing 50-33 win against Central University of Technology (CUT). The team lost their opening match on day four, 45-26, to UCT and on the same day, they bounced back by defeating the University of Johannesburg (UJ) with a 34-28 win in game two. On the last day of the tournament the team beat the University of Limpopo (UL) with a win of 48-31 in the final match of USSA tour. “As a newly promoted team the odds were stacked against us in a far more competitive division, however, coming forth to some well-established university’s insured that USSA 2019 was a success and by that we were very proud of the team,” concluded Howitt.

Cape Town streets tickled pink T

he streets of Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were flooded with a “sea of pink” when close to 23 000 runners and walkers joined forces to celebrate National Women’s Day at the Totalsports Women’s Race on Friday 9 August in support of PinkDrive. For the first time since the event’s inception in 2001, the race celebrated Women’s Day across three major cities on the same day. A very happy Annie Bothma from Mouille Point successfully defended her title when she crossed the finish at Grand Parade in a time of 34:52 seconds. “I came here with only one purpose,” says Bothma. “I didn’t really care about the time. I just wanted to defend my title. The race is challenging because it’s a very hilly course and I knew that Zintle (Xiniwe) is a very strong runner. I like this course because I am strong on hills. I repeated the mantra ‘conquer the hills you are stronger than the hills’. It feels incredible to successfully defend my

title today. The vibe makes this race so special. It’s so beautiful to see all these women unite on one day and run together.” Zintle Xiniwe came in second, while Beetrice Themane finished third. PinkDrive is a non-profit company (NPC) that is committed to improving breast cancer awareness, education, and providing and offering free services to the medically uninsured across South Africa. PinkDrive was present at each event offering free clinical breast examinations and educating on the importance of self- breast examinations. PinkDrive received a donation of R75 000 during this year’s prize giving. Results: 1. Annie Bothma – 00:34:52 2. Zintle Xiniwe – 00:37:06 3. Beetrice Themane – 00:37:26 4. Christiane Andriaanse – 00:37:53 5. Bulelwa Simae – 00:38:25 6. Yandiswa Shange – 00:39:36 7. Tyla le Roux – 00:39:54 8. Danette Smith – 00:40:17
