can have, teachers, learners and the Lavender Hill community are running high on the school’s 89.9% matric pass rate for 2019. And Viljoen wants to use that momentum to further improve the school. “I challenged our learners, as the top academic township and public school, to become the top sports school as well,” he says. “The last time Lavender Hill High had athletics was about four or five years ago and I have reintroduced it. I’m pleasantly surprised that the learners and the teachers are excited about inter-house athletics.” Training kicked off yesterday, Monday 20 January, with the first interhouse athletics competition set for Thursday 30 January. Next term, the school will kick off baseball, softball, hockey, soccer, cricket, rugby, chess and volleyball practices after school. Viljoen adds: “In the next three years, I want us to be the top sports

F

uad Viljoen officially took up his post as principal of Lavender Hill High School at the beginning of this year and is the successor to Faseeg Manie who retired last year. Manie spent 38 years at the school and was its principal for 17 years. Viljoen, the former deputy principal at Sibelius High School, says it was the right time in his teaching career to take up this new role. He acknowledges the important role played by Manie during his time as the school’s principal. “It was a bit sad for me; I had been at Sibelius High School for 25 years. But I had to move on and embrace new challenges. I have a lot on my mind but I have a great team here, so we’ll be going for it this year. “All the teachers at this school are passionate about the learners and taking the school forward.” Despite the jarring effect change

school. The school is on an upward trajectory.” He says the importance of providing a top-quality school is to show learners they can achieve anything, regardless of their circumstances. “Education is the way for learners to break the cycle of poverty, so the least we can do is to get everyone to pass matric and to give the children in the community a fighting chance. But we can’t do it without the parents and their support.” The school is currently at full capacity with 1100 learners and 60 on the waiting list. To enrol these learners, Viljoen will be applying to the Western Cape Education Department for more teachers. By growing the school, he hopes learners from Lavender Hill will stop making the long journey to other schools. “We can’t control what’s happening out in the community but we can create a safe space here on the premises,” he says.

Two arrested in murder of five-year-old

Thousands start ‘big’ school As schools reopened for the 2020 academic year on Wednesday 15 January, hundreds of thousands of Grade R’s and 1’s threw on their backpacks and headed off

Anti-gang unit detectives were unwavering in their pursuit of the suspects after a five-year-old boy was killed during a shoot-out between warring gangs in Drury Court, Lavender Hill on Saturday 21 December. A 22-year-old victim was also shot and seriously wounded during the incident. He was taken to hospital for medical assistance. On 23 December, two suspects, aged 24 and 29, were apprehended in connection with the murder and attempted murder. The two suspects are believed to be linked to a series of other cases. They have since appeared in court.

The 2020 edition of the Cape Town Carnival will light up the streets of the CBD on Human Rights Day, Saturday 21 March. Celebrating 10 years of bringing people together, igniting joy and unity through creativity and providing second-to-none entertainment, this year’s theme is “Incredible Journey: Sounds of South Africa” which will showcase the music, dance and art of our country and how it connects us as a nation to our past, future, our country and each other. “It is a perfect opportunity; especially considering the day’s national importance, to recognise, honour and celebrate the diversity of our people and the richness of our collective cul-

tures. The Cape Town Carnival is a colour and sound spectacle of magnificent floats, costumed performers, dancers and community groups, all who have been preparing for months to show what they are most proud of,” says Jay Douwes, Cape Town Carnival chief executive officer (CEO). The free-to-watch public spectacle is preceded by a yearround community-driven programme rolled out across the Cape metropole. The organisation is also home to a workshop of marvels in Maitland, which is where the float-building, metalwork, costume design, pattern-making and garment manufacturing for the event takes place.

Yet another train was vandalised last week; this time at Retreat station on Wednesday 15 January. Provincial minister of transport and public works Bonginkosi Madikizela and provincial minister of community safety Albert Fritz condemned the incident and have urged residents with information to come forward. The fire, which was reported at 22:00 last Wednesday, destroyed one coach. “On Wednesday 22 January, I will be meeting with transport minister Fikile Mbalula, once again to find a solution to this on-going saga,” said Madikizela. “Since my appointment last year, I committed to working with minister Mbalula and Prasa to deal with the challenges facing our rail system. It is always a concern when passengers, especially school children who have just returned to school, are inconvenienced by challenges facing the railsystem.” An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the fire. Fritz said it is essential that those responsible for the fires be brought to book.

“I have reported the issue of police inefficiency in investigating train arson to the Western Cape Police Ombudsman, Mr JJ Brand. I further alerted Mr Brand of this incident. “Anyone with information relating to police inefficiency in investigating train arson is asked to make their submission by 31 January 2020.” The written representations should be marked for the attention of JJ Brand and delivered by hand, post, e-mail or fax as follows: . By hand: 6th Floor, NBS Waldorf Building, 80 St Georges Mall, Cape Town 8001; . By post: Private Bag X9043, Cape Town 8000; . By e-mail: ombudsman@wcpo.gov.za; or . By fax: 021 483 0660. Fritz added: “I call on anyone with information regarding this particular fire to come forward and to report such to their local police station or by calling 08600 10111. “The destruction of the Western Cape’s transport infrastructure can no longer be tolerated as it is a threat to the wellbeing and livelihoods of our residents.”

VRYGROND | SEAWINDS

Entrepreneur serves the community RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

H

elp to Care, a community centre in Vrygrond which feeds hundreds of people weekly, received a blessing of its own when an entrepreneur from Seawinds breathed new life into to their trusty old bakkie. Daniel and Minnie Hoorn, founders of Help to Care, have been aiding poorer residents by providing them with meals from their soup kitchen, three days a week, for the past 20 years. While meals are mainly served at the centre now, Denzel Hoorn, Daniel’s son, explains they previously used the bakkie to take meals to other areas, including old Vrygrond and Overcome Heights to name a few. Cameron Pick from Cammy’s Mobile Repairs struck a good deal with Denzel to assist

the Hoorns in doing as much as they could for the community. Cameron and his right-hand man, Zafian Lakey, spent two months fixing the body of the bakkie. Denzel says his dad got the bakkie when he turned 60. “Now he’s 81 years old,” he says. “That bakkie was neglected and my Dad is really impressed with their work.” Cameron says the bakkie had one foot in the grave. “On the passenger side, there was a hole in the floor,” he says. Denzel adds: “There was a hole in the roof too, you could see the sky.” Cameron opened Cammy’s Mobile Repairs in May last year, with the intention to serve the panel beating needs of poorer communities.

“We are here for the community – we charge community prices. I grew up in the community and I want to show them that anyone can do it,” says Cameron. He says he got his start working for a panel beater for many years. He then decided to start his own business and brought Zafian on to learn the trade. “He was the first person I employed and he’s learned a lot,” he says. But it wasn’t all plain sailing. “The first month was very rough because today we may have work but tomorrow we didn’t.” Initially working out of a small Toyota Tazz, the duo managed to acquire a workshop in

Steenberg and a bakkie. But their vision for the company is bigger than just fixing cars. “It’s not just for us – if anyone comes here, we can teach them. We have kids and teens who come to watch and learn. “Before they end up on the wrong side, we tell them to come to us.” Denzel commends the start-up company for its assistance to get the Hoorns’s bakkie up and running. “Cameron gave back to the community by fixing the bakkie. Help to Care is grateful for that.” V For more information, contact Help to Care Centre on 021 702 6107 or email help2carecentre@gmail.com.

Vics add to Strandfontein’s misery GOOSAIN ABRAHAMS

N

ewcomers to Western Province Cricket Association’s Premier League, Strandfontein came agonisingly close to recording their first victory of the season when they lost by 11 runs to Victoria Cricket Club on Saturday 18 January.
