STEENBERG
Drill teams put on a show RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he annual drill competition, hosted by Steenberg police station’s social crime prevention unit (SCPU), was quite a sight to behold. The competition saw eight school teams competing in various categories to show their skills. The teams who participated – some with years of experience and others with very little – were Delta Primary School, Harmony Primary School, Square Hill Primary School, Levana Primary School, Thomas Wildschutt Senior Primary, Blouvlei Primary School for learners with special education needs, Sibelius High School and Lavender Hill High School. Const Lugmaan Adams of Steenberg police’s SCPU organised the event in conjunction with Steenberg community policing forum (CPF). He explained the aim of the competition. “It’s part of our social crime prevention plan. We do this every year. During the last week of school, there are lots of children who leave and don’t come back. We try to keep them busy this last week and keep them going to school,” said Adams. He says drills teach the children discipline and keep them off the streets. Delta Primary School’s drill team is made up of learners aged 10 to 13. They have been participating in the competition and taking part in the sport for more than four years. “For this competition, we had three weeks of training. We started with the new ones, from basics, so it was quite a challenge,” said Connor Koopman, drill team coach at the school. “Their progress has been quite good. I’m quite surprised they reached the level that I wanted them to be at,” he added. V To page 2.

hen her children left school 33 years ago, she decided to be of service to her community and fellow man. She is one of the finalists in the 80 years and older category of the Community Champions Elder Awards presented by People’s Post, TygerBurger and City Vision, in partnership with Spec-Savers. “I don’t like being in the limelight but prefer

to be in the background. This is my 34th year dedicating my time to be of service to whoever needs it and it started 34 years ago when my kids were still at Durbanville High School,” Margaret said when TygerBuger visited her at home. She worked in the tuck shop at the school and when her kids left school she had to find something else to do. “I started with a refreshment trolley at Tygerberg and Karl Bremer hospitals for all the wards. When the nurses decided to open their own tuck shop I started with needlework. We made toiletry bags for kids in hospital over the festive season and gave it as gifts to the patients. In the bags were shampoo and other toiletries. “Nowadays, I am knitting bootees and caps for premature babies. I collect secondhand clothing and every three months we have a sale. My team and I usually stored the clothing in boxes at the hospital, but a storeroom was cleaned and we use that space as our storeroom,” Margaret said. She visits Karl Bremer every Thursday and all the clothes that are not sold are handed over to Patricia Groenewald of Avondale, to hand out where there is a need. “We sometimes get knitted squares and use that to make blankets for the rape centre at Karl Bremer hospital. The past 20 years I am a volunteer catering coordinator at the Bellville East Reformed Church for the non-governmental organisation, Koningskinders. This is a group of underprivileged kids that we take on a camping trip every term. “The kids are from Aristea Primary School in Kraaifontein and the principal selects who attends the camps. The camp is over five days and is held at the Melkbosstrand Cultural Centre and matrics or college students are the group leaders. Each group leader has three children to

take care of for the duration of the camp and the camp has a Christian theme,” she said. The leader and kids read the Bible, say a prayer and are involved in certain activities like a concert and dress up. As part of her involvement with Koningskinders she makes food parcels and distributes them in the Kraaifontein community. At her local church, she has been doing flower baskets for sick people every Sunday since 2000 to brighten their day. “I don’t have money to give away but God gave me hands to reach out and contribute with. As I mentioned in the beginning, I
don’t want publicity but appreciate the fact that I was nominated for the Community Champions Elders Award,” she chuckled. Her compassion for the needy continues to be her daily focus despite her age and fragility. She has 11 great-grandchildren for whom she also knits beanies and bonnets when she gets time, and is waiting to hear the gender of her next great-grandchild. V The winners of the awards will be announced at a morning tea on 12 October in Cape Town. Winners and runners-up will walk away Shoprite vouchers and other prizes sponsored by TygerBurger, People’s Post, City Vision, and Spec-Savers.
The schools’ competition was a precursor to the Mitchell’s Plain Saps Marching and Drill Competition in October, aimed at finding teams suitable to represent the district on a larger scale. Hilton Palanyandi, principal at Delta Pri-
mary School, said his hopes for the future of the competition was that it would one day turn into a fully-fledged festival where the entire community could see the talents of the learners at the local schools in a festive environment.
FROM PAGE 1 There were awards for the best high schools and primary schools, and additional awards for best march, best dressed, best exhibition and best drummers, to name a few. The overall winner of the competition in the high schools’ category was Sibelius High School, with Lavender Hill High School in second place. In the junior schools’ category, Levana Primary School took first place, with Delta Primary coming in at a close second. Steenberg CPF’s Marcelle Williams concluded the festivities. He said: “You need to stay disciplined, focus on your education, study and progress. Don’t be satisfied with the minimum. At school, try your best so that you can study further. You need an education to join the police, navy, army or air force.” He added that learners have the opportunity to be seen and recruited into the police forces through the drills competitions.

LAVENDER HILL
Joy Benjamin bids fellow teacher, Patricia Bailey a fond farewell at her special retirement assembly. PHOTOS:
Emotional farewell at teacher’s assembly RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
L
ast week Friday, 20 September, Patricia Bailey served her final day of work as an educator at Levana Primary School and closed the chapter on her almost 40 years as a teacher. She was celebrated one day prior, on Thursday 19 September at a special farewell assembly in her honour. Bailey, who is sometimes referred to by her learners as Mummy, lives in Strandfontein and has been teaching learners at Levana Primary School in Lavender Hill for 11 years. She began her long journey in education in Lavender Hill at Prince George Primary School where she taught for three years, following which she moved to Marine Primary School in Ocean View where she worked for 24 years. Having become a well-known figure in each of the schools she taught – and the communities at large – she said: “I was like a mother figure to them. “They come and they hug me, and sometimes even give me a little kiss.” She notes that the children have made her
RACINE EDWARDES
experience as a teacher great, but adds that another highlight of her time in schools has been her appointment to a position that she feels very passionately about. “The highlight of my 40 years is that I became chairperson of the Health Promoting Schools (an international health-promoting concept introduced in Western Cape schools in 1995) and I’ve always believed that your health is your wealth,” she said – a lesson she teaches the children. At her emotional farewell assembly attended by alumni from the school, Levana Primary School’s principal, Andre Lamprecht saluted the long-standing teacher. Grade R learners read a poem for her, saying: “This is the end of working for someone else and the beginning of living for yourself. “We’re wishing you all the best.” Joy Benjamin, also a teacher at the school, wished Bailey all the best on her new journey. “You’re starting a new chapter in your life and we want to wish you everything of the best. We once again want to thank you for your warmth and your kindness, for everything you’ve done and left for us here, and we love you lots. Enjoy your retirement, you deserve it,” she said. In closing, Bailey told those at the gathering: “I am very sad to leave you all, but I am tired and I need a break.” She told People’s Post that she will always be there for her learners and colleagues, despite her retirement and she plans to continue to serve in the future. She plans to make a trip to Thailand midyear next year to visit the elderly, hoping to put smiles on their faces by letting them know they are loved. “My mum was bed-ridden so I know what it means to them for us to just be there. I’m also going to speak to the youth and get to the roots of their problems – but I’m also going to take a lot of me-time,” she said.

RETREAT | STEENBERG
Little trust in police crime report RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
R
esidents had the chance to have their say on the crime statistics since the official release on Thursday 12 September by police minister, Bheki Cele. Petrus Davids from Retreat expressed his
concern for the number of robberies that take place in the area, especially around the railway tracks between Retreat and Steenberg stations. “Train robberies are still happening on this section between Steenberg and Retreat. People who are going to the mall use this short cut and the other one further down. They (officials) keep saying they’re going to
close these pathways but they never do. This is where people get robbed the most and by using them (short cuts), you put yourself in danger.” Another resident of Retreat echoed his sentiments adding that the crime statistics are incorrect, in his opinion, as many of them go unreported. “All the statistics are not there. People get robbed here daily, those that cross the train here after 19:00, but they don’t want to go open the case because they know it’s hopeless – they’re not going to get their phone back or whatever.” The resident added that he was personally aware of several rape incidents that have taken place in the area, which have also gone unreported. “I know four girls who have been gang-raped who don’t want to say anything because the gangs threaten them – and they will kill them.” He added that people in Steenberg, Retreat and surrounds have become accustomed to crime and often don’t take note of crimes anymore, sometimes even severe crimes. “Last Sunday morning a robbery
happened there by the line. An old man was thrown with petrol and robbed. Why did nobody report about that?” He attributed the rise in crime to the gangs, particularly the Junkie Funkies, who have taken domain of a large area. “This area was reserved before, but now it’s infected with gangsterism,” he said, adding that gangsterism is glamourised and many young boys are falling victim to it. Steenberg’s Jody Jacobs said she also experiences crime in her area but she is thankful that it is not as bad as it is in Lavender Hill, Seawinds and Hillview. A Hillview resident said that St Swithin Road is inhabited by many gang members; the criminal elements that put children and families at risk constantly. The main concern among residents collectively is the use, distribution and recruitment of young people to sell drugs by gangs, and the crime that results from this, such as robbery and murder – statistics they feel are not accurately represented by the annual crime report for 2018/2019.
Reward offered for cop killer A reward of R100 000 is offered for information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects who murdered Sgt Donovan Prins. On Monday 24 June, while performing official duties with a colleague, Prins pursued suspects in Lavender Hill. The suspects opened fire at him and he was wounded. He succumbed to his injuries
in hospital. The suspects fled the scene and are sought by the Steenberg police anti-gang unit. Any person with information that can lead to the suspects is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sgt Patrick Learner on 021 843 1900 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 with their anonymous tipoff.

Retired, but not going anywhere RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
M
oeridah Dien may be retiring from her job as a reservist at Steenberg police station, but she has made it clear to her colleagues: “I’m not going anywhere.” Dien says she has seen the worst of the worst during her 20 years of service at the station. “I’ve seen a person’s throat slit open. At first it is very traumatising, but after a while you get use to it.” She began working at the station in 1999,
first as a trauma counsellor and then, 12 years later, as a reservist. Dien was tasked with stabilising the victims of various incidents during the time it took for investigating detectives to make their way to the scene or to the police station. She says what kept her motivated was that when people came in they were traumatised, but by the time they had to leave, they had a smile on their face. “It’s been a driving force for me. It kept me coming back.” According to police regulations, reservists

Participants in a charity trail run that took place earlier this year tackled an uphill on the Zevenwacht route. Join TygerBurger for a 5km trail run on the same route on Saturday 19 October. The trail offers breathtaking views of the entire peninsula. PHOTO: CARINA ROUX
Brave the Zevenwacht route in our trail run Lace up your tekkies, “wear your newspaper” and join TygerBurger on Saturday 19 October at our first trail run at Zevenwacht Wine Estate in Kuils River. The 5km trail run starts at 08:00. The uphill and winding route takes participants through the vineyards and has breathtaking views of the entire peninsula. Entry costs R100 for adults and includes a bottle of wine from Zevenwacht. Children aged six to 17 pay R50 and children aged five
or younger can join for free. Those brave enough to tackle 10km can walk (or run) the route a second time at no extra cost. Participants are also encouraged to “wear your newspaper”. Show us your creative side by dressing up in, or incorporating the newspaper into your outfit. There will be a prize for the best outfit. Tickets are limited. Book at Webtickets or Pick n Pay. V For more information, phone Madelein Venter on 021 910 6544.

Athletes enjoy fast, flat, fun race RASHIED ISAACS
M
SA Multisport held their third annual league race on Sunday 22 September through the streets of Kenwyn and Wynberg. The race is labelled as “triple F” – fast, flat and fun. The race catered for distances of 5km and 10km. Just over 1 500 participants were blessed with cool weather; with Raydon Balie (30:34) of Eerste River and Langa’s Pamela Moyikwa (39:02) using it to their advantage to beat a top field of runners in the open categories.
The Langa club have been consistently sharing the podium of late with the most noticeable addition to the club being Fortunate Chidzivo who smashed the Cape Town marathon 10km course record last week, Sunday 15 September. The MSA race is a start of a series of races lined up for this week on the Western Province Athletics calendar with the Nantes Athletics Club poised to host their annual race on Tuesday 24 September, and Goodwood Harriers ending off a festival of running on Saturday 27 September. Here are a few snaps from Sunday’s race in Wynberg.
