Residents fed up with smell RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he City of Cape Town has expressed their intention to clear up the spill that resulted from a malfunction at Lowlift Sewage Pump Station recently, but residents are fed-up, saying that the smell has in actual fact been affecting them for years. “On Monday 15 July, the pumps at the Lowlift Pump Station tripped as a result
of overheating, after pumping continuously for some time. This is as a result of fat in the sump which caused the pump sensors to malfunction,” says acting Mayco member for water and waste, Felicity Purchase. According to Purchase, the station is usually operational with just one pump but as a result of the malfunction, more pumps needed to be activated, which in turn caused the neighbouring plot to become filled with pungent-smelling water.
“Due to the pump not operating, there was a significant buildup of water in the reticulation system and the pump station sump. When the pump station became operational again, it was required that three pumps be activated to pump away the build-up of water in the system. This resulted in the surge out of the manhole,” she says. Residents, however, have said that this particular reticulation system has been a continuous problem in the community,
even forcing some people to relocate as a result of the ongoing smell and hygiene issues they’ve faced. Charmaine Craven, a resident of Spoonbill Crescent in Seawinds, has faced the issue of the smelly sewage pump for more than two decades. “We smell the pump here every morning. It’s a problem because there are the children here at the school,” she says, referring to Zerilda Primary School. V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 The school’s principal, Lorna Engledoe shared her experience with the pump station over the 30 years that she’s been working at the school. “Regularly I get the secretary to phone the council because we just can’t handle it anymore. At lunchtime when I walk across the field, I have to pinch my nose,” says Engeldoe. “Disinfectants will be used to clean the area and minimise the odour,” Purchase says, reassuring residents that action will be taken as soon as the rain subsides. A resident of Military Road who lives near the pump, Alice Jansen has lived in that house for about 35 years and says they have cleaned it before but the smell always returns. She explains: “For a little while the smell was gone, but every winter it comes back. I went to the council in Plumstead last month to sort this out. It’s so bad that sometimes we can’t even sleep – and there are the flies and mosquitoes in summer, so we really can’t sleep!” Engeldoe claims that years ago a schoolboy fell into the sewage that lay near the pump and fell critically ill as a result. She says the council cleaned the area after that incident, but soon after, the pump began to leak out into the open plot again. “The smell is terrible all the time and worse when it’s hot – and especially when they pump there.
A residence, opposite the sewage pump, displays a message on its wall reading: “Vote DA en bly in k@k” and “Ryk k@k”. PHOTO: RACINE EDWARDES
When they pump it also makes a terrible noise, that you can’t even hear yourself speak in the house,” said another resident, Dorothy Prime, who has also been a resident in Seawinds for about 30 years. Purchase offered residents some advice to maintain a functional sewage system in the surrounding areas. “We appeal to residents to please not dispose of cooking oil or fat in-
to the system as it creates serious blockages in the system. “When poured or flushed down your sink and drain, they harden and build up on the inside of the sewer pipes and act like glue, attracting rags, hair, paper and other debris. The hardness of these blockages can also make them very difficult to clean out,” she concludes.

crease digital literacy and skills for its residents, with a bias towards those who remain severely impacted by the digital divide. One of the City’s strategic focus areas is leveraging technology to improve the lives of residents. “The SmartCape programme was initiated in July 2002 when we had installed computers in six public libraries across the City, on a pilot basis. “Six months later there were 3 000 registered SmartCape users. Today, there are over 450 000 registered users who can get up to 45 minutes of free internet use

Since the launch of SmartCape, it has also expanded its digital literacy efforts through various learner and training initiatives. SmartCape still remains the platform where many residents are exposed to the internet on a desktop for the first time.

SETTING UP THE FOUNDATION: Harmony Primary School in Steenberg is in the process of being overhauled and rebuilt. The provincial education department previously shared that the school was initially constructed of inappropriate (prefab) materials, which is termed a “plankie school”. Contractors have completed phase one, the foundation phase, and are currently busy with the next steps in the reconstruction. The next phases will see the construction and erection of the school hall as well as the administration office and Grade R classrooms.
Regular blood donors urgently needed The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) only has enough blood for two days and is appealing to new and regular donors to donate blood and help bring the level back to five days. Michelle Vermeulen, corporate public relations officer at WCBS, says: “The contributing factors to the blood shortage are that regular donors suffer from colds and flu and
therefore can’t donate blood, as well as the current winter chill that we have experienced, deterring some donors from donating.” Group O stocks are critically low. They are appealing to everyone in the group O blood type to donate blood at their nearest blood donation clinic. Study tips from Principals Academy RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he Principals Academy Trust imparted some valuable knowledge to Sibelius High School’s matric learners as they head into their preliminary exam period. The academy works with the University of Cape Town (UCT) to service socio-economically challenged areas of Cape Town by upskilling teachers and empowering learners. The academy works across areas including Athlone, Bellville, Franschhoek, Gansbaai, Genadendal, Grassy Park, Gugulethu, Hermanus, Hopefield, Khayelitsha, Kraaifontein, Kuils River, Langebaan, Manenberg, Mfuleni, Mitchell’s Plain, Philippi, Retreat, Simon’s Town and Vredenburg. Deputy principal at the school Fuad Viljoen welcomed the guest speaker for the matrics on Tuesday 23 July and explained the role played by retired principal, Paul Cassar from the academy. “Every second week I have a session with him so that he can guide me and give me advice – so what that means is that learning does not stop at Grade 12. When you receive your certificate, so many doors are going to open for you. It is up to you to make the conscious effort to step through the doorway,” Viljoen said encouragingly. Cassar told the learners about his exciting work at various schools before he retired five years ago. Now, with the academy, he hopes to facilitate learning with matric learners, specifically. “I work with 14 different schools and I am here today because matric is in my DNA, and I just want to see if I can help you make the most of a very difficult time – because the next few months are going to be a very difficult time,” he said.
Paul Cassar from the Principals Academy Trust shares study advice with learners at Sibelius High School. “Matric is about the excitement – you need to feel it, but that excitement tends to wear off because of the work and the pressure that just increases and increases.” He explained that the two subjects that all learners should pass with at least 50% are home language and first additional language. He then offered learners advice for effective studying: . Find the learning style that suits you best. Some learners learn visually, others verbally and some through the use of sound. He encourages learners to learn in the way that suits them. . When studying, get to what’s important.
“We often study what we know, but it’s the work you may not have gotten to properly that you need to study,” said Cassar. . Practise. He encourages that learners take in as much information during school, study for at least three hours after school and devote eight hours to studying each day – with breaks – during the weekend. . Use flashcards to remember. . Make use of other resources to facilitate better understanding. Do extra research. . Teach someone else. Cassar says he learns best when teaching his teddy, but says it works just as well to teach fellow students or even parents. Teaching is one of the

best ways to learn, according to him. . Studying in a group helps, but you have to study and not waste time, he said. . “Stay eager and do not procrastinate,” he said. Matric learner Jade Spiyers said she learned a lot and found the talk by Cassar very helpful. Another learner Casey Africa agrees. She said: “It was motivational for me and it should help all of us at school. The study methods are going to help everyone if we just put our heads to it.” V For more information on the Principals Academy Trust, visit ww.principalsacademy.ac.za.

Art exhibition a great success RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes
T
he Butterfly Art Project’s (BAP) first exhibition in conjunction with Casa Labia Cultural Centre was deemed a great success by those involved and those who visited the exhibition. BAP is a non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Vrygrond which aims to facilitate healing in children from disadvantaged communities through art. The organisation opened their annual exhibition at the centre’s gallery to a full house, on Thursday 18 July. Azola Mkosana, cultural manager at the centre, said: “It went very well. The numbers were just amazing – and the feedback that we received was amazing!” The NPO and the centre recently entered into a partnership where the charitable arm of Casa Labia, Fondazione Labia, offered space to BAP for the advancement of arts and culture in South Africa. This space will be used for the Community Art Facilitators’ Workshop where community art facilitators
will be trained to facilitate healing in children in more than 40 under-resourced communities across the province; with mentorship, programmes and classes now set to take place at the centre. Casa Labia’s managing director, Antonia Labia, said: “Joining forces with BAP is the perfect fit for us, as we seek to broaden the impact of Fondazione Labia across the Western Cape and seek to make Casa Labia and Fondazione Labia increasingly more relevant and impactful.” Mkosana also explained the rich history of the centre which was built in the late 1920s and bears all the original artworks from its first owners – the perfect space for new work to be displayed. Hugo Kabeya (14), participant of the BAP programmes, is one of the young people whose artworks was successfully sold after being displayed on the opening night. According to the NPO, his uncle had fallen victim to several xenophobic attacks which resulted in he and Hugo moving to Vrygrond. Hugo was an introvert, but has come out of his shell since starting the programmes at the NPO in 2012. He has decided that he wants to pursue art as a career path in the future. Programmes coordinator at BAP Rameez Davids said: “The launch went really well with a good turnout.” The exhibition will be on display until Thursday 8 August. Rylands Library hosted the eighth Matric Challenge on Tuesday 23 July. The programme is designed to bring the set work papers for Grade 12 learners to life and help prepare them for examinations. “The importance of reading cannot be emphasised enough and by making it fun and interactive, we hope to instil a love for reading in as many young people as we can reach,” says Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien. “Set work in high school is often seen as a chore, but with the Matric Challenge learners are shown a creative way of looking at the prescribed work and learning at the same time.” The Matric Challenge started eight years ago as a Friends of Rylands library initiative – in association with the staff at the facility. “Some of the aims of the Matric Challenge are to encourage teenagers to read with understanding, improve their study skills, understand the set work from different viewpoints, create a competitive learning environment and provide learners with an opportunity to meet with peers from other schools,” says Badroodien. The first competition took place with two participating schools, Rylands High School and Dural Is-

The participating schools are Crystal House, Athlone High, Rylands High, Gardens Commercial High, Oaklands High, Manenberg High, The Leadership College, and Al Azhar High. “I commend all the learners who participated as it shows a commitment to their education and a willingness to acquire new learning skills. As they start a period of intense study before the final exams
I wish them all the best and encourage them to make use of the facilities available at our libraries,” says Badroodien. City libraries have the write stuff T
he City of Cape Town’s libraries have partnered with the Open Book Festival organisers to give storytellers, writers and poets an opportunity to see their work in print through the #WritingMyCity project. The best contributions will be printed in an anthology, which will be launched at this year’s festival in September. The competition has closed and the final selection for the anthology is being made. “A total of 187 entries were received from
librarians and patrons. These included stories and poems in Afrikaans, English, Xhosa and Kaaps. All the work that will be selected will focus on an aspect of our beautiful city,” Badroodien said. Budding storytellers and writers were asked to submit their stories about Cape Town and creative writing workshops were facilitated at libraries to find the voices, said Mayco member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien.
He continued: “It has given participants a platform to celebrate and deepen our understanding of who and what makes Cape Town such a wonder. It is also providing an opportunity for writers, young and old, to see their work in print and share their diverse stories. “Open Book appointed a judging panel to make the final selection of 40 contributions and I am excited to see and read more about our diverse city,” said Badroodien.
Speaking on the writers’ narratives, he said: “The city is home to a multitude of different voices and the anthology will give us a glimpse into some of the stories which make up the colourful fabric of Cape Town.” The printed anthology will be available through the library network and also available for sale at the Open Book Festival taking place from Wednesday 4 to Sunday 8 September.
Right people key to success of business PROMOTION To be in business for almost 22 years is an achievement in itself but would not be possible without the right employees. This is how Nathaniel Roberts, owner of Timbacore in Stikland, sums up his success through the years since his company was established in 1998. To make a success of a business is a miracle and you’ll have to deal with trials and new challenges on the way. “International statistics show that a very small percentage of companies make it past the 10-year mark. The odds are in my favour as I am celebrating 21 years in business,” he said. If he and any employee make a mistake, he refers to the mistake as ‘paying school The staff of Timbacore in Stikland. fees’ and stepping stones. “It is difficult to get the right staff. Use reputable timber suppliers The Institute for Timber Construction South Africa (ITC-SA), the SA timber engineering industry’s professional body, wishes to reiterate the importance of using reputable timber suppliers or merchants whose timber complies with the relevant characteristic values. “We encourage our members and the industry at large to remain steadfast in selecting and using only compliant structural timber that is certified by either of the only accreditation bodies currently in South Africa: The South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and South African Technical Auditing Services (SATAS), who certify products in compliance with the relevant standards,” says Amanda Obbes, ITCSA General Manager. It is critical that standards are maintained at all times and that all timber produced and destined for the SA structural market, is compliant. As such, it is expected that local as well as interna-
tional manufacturers of structural timber destined for the SA market, will be certified by a South African-based ISO 17065 accredited Product Certification Body, which is also applicable to the neighbouring states (Swaziland and Zimbabwe). “We request that all members to be aware of the need for compliance with national legislation and to not make use of either locally produced timber or imports that do not comply with SA standards and requirements,” Obbes concludes. The institute was established 45 years ago to self-regulate the engineered timber roof structure industry and to provide design, manufacturing, erection, inspection and certification for compliance with inter alia SANS 10400 and SANS 10082, where engineering rational designs are applicable. Local lad flipping boards in LA A
fter shattering yet another Guinness World Record recently, Athlone-born Jean-Marc Johannes was in Los Angeles competing in the second round of the prestigious, global Street League Skateboarding (SLS) series. The competition, which ended on Sunday 28 July, was stop two of the 2019 World Tour, with the first having taken place in London earlier this year and will be Johannes’ first time competing in LA. Founded in 2010 by renowned pro skateboarder and host of MTV’s Ridiculousness, Rob Dyrdek, the Street League Skateboarding is the premier international competitive series in professional

skateboarding and showcases an international roster of skating’s elite pros. Before leaving for the States, Johannes said the chance to skate with the world’s elite is a big opportunity for him. “In skateboarding, it’s considered an honour to receive an invitation to the SLS. I’ve grown up watching events like these and to be selected to be part of this season’s is a dream come true. It’s the highest level of street skateboarding in the world and it will be assisting me greatly in accumulating points for the Olympic Games ahead,” he said. At each indoor SLS event, arenas are transformed into custom concrete skate plazas,
challenging the pros to be innovative and take the progression of skateboarding to new highs as a selection of worldclass skateboarders compete for the largest purse in skateboarding. The event carries all the more weight with pro-skaters vying for the chance to prove themselves ahead of Tokyo 2020, where skateboarding will make its Olympic debut as one of the most exciting new developments in the Summer Games. Johannes also achieved his second Guinness World Record when he broke Dyrdek’s 15 year-long record for the most fakie flips in one minute recently, one of skate boarding’s most difficult manoeuvres.

Softball shakes things up NOORE NACERODIEN
T
he Cape Town Softball Association, formerly known as the Western Province Softball Federation, held its 27th annual general meeting on Sunday 28 July at the Turfhall Softball Stadium. The newly-elected executive committee is the youngest committee ever to be elected to administer the sport in Cape Town since unification in 1992, with all the elected officials still playing, which augurs well for the sport in Cape Town. Newly-elected chairperson Hayley Carolus, who plays for Battswood Softball Club, thanked the clubs for having the confidence in the new group. “We will work together for a better association and in the interest of the game of softball. Our starting foundation blocks should be softball first. I am here to serve softball and our clubs,” said Carolus. She will feel comfortable having Devonshire Rovers’ Bradley Johnson by her side as her deputy chairperson. Tantasport’s Nawaal Nacerodien will see to the secretarial duties with Samantha Jones from Falcons taking
care of the association’s coffers as the treasurer. Excell Dodgers’ Dwain Kerchhoff will look after the youth with Nicole Alexander from Westridge Yankees taking the reins of development director and Pirates’ Denver Anthony looking after the technical portfolio. Filling up the compliment of the committee is Westridge Yankees stalwart Candice Bull will head up the transformation portfolio. Social media has been flooded with congratulatory messages with the hope that the sport will flourish once more. “May you serve with pride and integrity as you lead softball into a new chapter of hope,” said Dianne Morgan. Cape Town has been the stronghold of softball in the country for many years at all levels of the sport. It is hoped that this new young group can reignite that flame. Former coach and umpire, Preston Ringquest, said: “May the youth prosper and take softball in Cape Town back to where it deserves to be.” The local softball season is expected to kick off in October.
