Residents urged to use the Vlei RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

W

ard 72 councillor Kevin Southgate encourages all residents of Retreat, Grassy Park and areas near the Princess Vlei to use the facilities available for fun, family-orientated, recreational purposes. The new Princess Vlei jungle gym was completed on Thursday 18 July and forms part of the City’s efforts to rejuvenate the area and to create safe spaces that residents can use at their leisure. The play area for children cost the City more than R300 000 to complete, according to Southgate. “The whole idea is to develop this entire precinct and we’ve been doing it, bit by bit. We’ve put in braai areas and plants. So all the work that has been done here thus far has come out of my ward’s allocation budget. Every year I’ve allocated about R200 000 towards this,” Southgate reveals. V To page 3.

Enkosi Place is home to 21 children with an array of needs. “We are a home that helps vulnerable children that come out of an abused life, who are neglected,” said the home’s caretaker Anthea Booysen.

People's Post is published by WP Media, a subsidiary of Media24. According to Booysen, the orphanage was founded by her mother 25 years ago in Military-Heights informal settlement, in Lavender Hill. The original home is still active, with operations being overseen by Booysen’s sister. “We would like to thank Pollsmoor for donating food, paint and clothing,” said Booysen. “We are not an NGO or an NPO, so we don’t receive funding,” said Booysen, explaining that she usually appeals to her Facebook audience when there is an urgent need for assistance, and people respond with food and clothes donations. Booysen expressed joy at having good people come in and share this journey with her family. “ I have been helping since I was 12,” she said. She now shares the load with her husband Ashley Eiman. Booysen says transport for the children going to school is one of the home’s more pressing concerns. “We share all we have. We have 21 children. We cannot help more because the house is small. Only six do not go to school,” Booysen said, adding that it costs roughly R1 000 per week to ensure the children get to school. “People want to help, but we cannot pay them. With the little that we have, we just want to make a difference,” said Booysen. Despite utility bills piling up monthly, and medical concerns plaguing the chil-

V Hillview: Muizenberg police officers received information of alleged gang suspects carrying firearms in Lebombo Street on Wednesday 17 July. The police apprehended one suspect at a residence in the street and found him to be in possession of two firearms. The suspect, a 23year-old resident of Hillview, was arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and the possession of a prohibited firearm and unlicensed ammunition. The suspect had been arrested previously and was out on bail. V Lavender Hill: On Monday 22 July, members of the Anti-Gang Unit arrested a 22-year-old woman with an unlicensed 357 revolver and 60 rounds of ammunition in Chapel Road. The suspects are expected to make court appearances in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court and the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court once they have been charged. V Lavender Hill: Steenberg police confirmed that a case of attempted murder was opened for investigation after a 32-year-old woman

come sex-workers, fall pregnant as teenagers or become fathers too early. Divine assistance came in the form of Lewies Davids and his team of officials from Pollsmoor Correctional Services, who spent some time at the orphanage on that day. “You know, [they] are taking abandoned children from the streets, where the parents are involved in drugs and alcoholism and so forth, and they take care of them,” said Lewis, reflecting on the importance of institutions such as Enkosi Place. “One of the children, he’s 17 years old, and he’s using a supplement called Ensure. He can’t do anything for himself. “He had a brain operation and he’s paraplegic. He needs this product. So, we brought a few of the tins of the supplement because he can’t eat any solid foods,” said Booysen. If there is anyone who would like to assist Anthea Booysen and the children who find refuge at Enkosi Place, contact the orphanage by visiting or calling Anthea or Eiman. The home is situated in Westlake. V If you want to assist, call Anthea Booysen and Ashley Eiman on 061 315 6521, or find Anthea Booysen on Facebook.

Anyone with information can contact Steenberg Police Station on 021 702 9000 or Crime Stop on 0860 010 111. V Lavender Hill: The circumstances surrounding a shooting on the corner of St Christopher Avenue and Depsiton Crescent at about 13:10 on Sunday 28 July, where two men aged 33 and 52 were shot and wounded, is under investigation by Steenberg police. The motive for the shooting is gang-related. The suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested. V Steenberg: On Thursday 1 August, at approximately 13:30, an undercover Muizenberg police officer noticed suspicious activity at the Military Road shopping centre. The officer approached a 16-year-old boy and found him to be in possession of five 100g packets of tik, with an estimated street value of R150 000. The Steenberg resident was arrested and detained at Muizenberg Police Station on charges of dealing in narcotics. He appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Helping parents to help children RACINE EDWARDES @RaeEdwardes

P

hilisa Abafazi Bethu, a non-profit organisation (NPO), aims to aid learners by teaching parents the best ways to support and assist their children to improve their school grades, enabling them to confidently move on to higher learning institutions. Lucinda Evans, community activist and founder of the NPO, addressed parents at Lavender Hill High School, encouraging them to facilitate learning for their children. The NPO currently runs a programme for parents of learners who have dropped out of school. The programme is focused on educating parents on how to work with their children, allowing them to attain the qualifications needed to enter a higher learning institution. This will empower the learners and uplift the community as a whole. “Our parent programme started at the end of July. It runs over four Saturdays. The programme looks at how we can support the child more. At present, there are 25 learners in the programme. We would like to see them go on to university or college and beyond,” said Evans. It is open to all parents and learners living in the southern suburb areas. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) offers the following tips for exams and overall school success:

Secretary of the Princess Vlei Forum, Bridget Pitt, expressed the organisation’s delight over the completion of the play structure. “It’s something that’s been asked for in the community for years now. We are really pleased it’s finally up, after having urged the City to put it up for some time,” she says. Southgate hopes that the new park will encourage residents to use the area and to show criminals that the area is off-limits for illegal activities. He explained: “We want the community to take ownership of the play area. What we’re trying to do is create a space for families. “They no longer have to travel to Green Point – they can braai here. This is one of the few water bodies that we have.”

Unfortunately, the jungle gym was vandalised last week when one of the swings was cut off and stolen. However, Pitt confirms that the vandal was caught whilst trying to make off with his prize. The swing will be reattached soon. She asks the community to assist in ridding the area of crime. “We want to appeal to the community to help stop any vandalism or theft; for example, if someone tries to sell you a swing that has been cut off, please report it,” she urged. Southgate hinted at an upcoming project which will take shape around the Vlei soon; a walkway encircling the water has been considered in the budget allocation for the 2019/2020 period.

Lucinda Evans of Philisa Abafazi Bethu speaks at Lavender Hill High School. The NGO aims to empower the community by empowering the youth and their parents. . don’t miss one day of school; . draft a timetable to start studying and stick to it to ensure exam readiness when the time comes; . read and write every day. The WCED encourages learners in Grade 12 to read 1 000 words a day and to write 400 words a day to practise for the final exams. The WCED also has several resources available online to assist learning. V Visit its website: https://wcedonline.westerncape.gov.za/ to find out more or call Philisa Abafazi Bethu on 081 5390 896 to find out more about the parent programme.

Coffee culture in Grassy Park A Grassy Park couple has established a space where residents from the community can come together. The family service station, located at Busy Corner, has been in the Jaffer family for almost 42 years. Mohamed Bray (37) and his wife, Ayesha Jaffer, took over the family business two years ago and realised there was no coffee shop in the area. The couple then opened a Vida e Caffè in Grassy Park. The 37-year-old said he reached out to the community and asked them whether the area needs a coffee shop. “Lots of people thought it would be nice to have a coffee offering in Grassy Park,” said Bray. He said people in the community have responded well and have shown their appreciation for the coffee shop. “This was the one luxury missing from Grassy Park.” Bray said they have also hired locals to

work in the store. “We have had matriculants work in the store, employed people from the community and have also supported community initiatives,” he explained. “A woman from Grassy Park has also launched her business from our store,” Bray continued. “Coffee culture has come alive in Grassy Park. Saturday and Sunday mornings joggers and cyclists come in and enjoy their coffee.” Bray said there is a certain stereotype that exists where you can’t be in Grassy Park, but suddenly on weekends, the shop is filled with people who are not from the community. Bray said this also created diversity in Grassy Park. “This is an uplifting, feel-good moment which we never thought would happen. We just wanted to give the community coffee and locals a place to come and chill.”

E

ileen Ferrier is a Retreat resident who recently celebrated her 96th birthday and is still going strong. As one of two remaining Ferrier siblings, who once constituted a group of five, Eileen and her sister, Gadija Heuwel, celebrated her birthday with her children and nieces, Desmond, Kenny, Charlie, May, Cora, Bruce, Bonny Diener and Theresa Eckles. “We celebrated with her and her children at 8:30 that morning and thereafter we had

some tea at her house,” said Bonny, Eileen’s niece. Her birthday celebrations took place on Saturday 20 July, and she has no plans to let her age hold her back. “She does her own housework and she does the cooking, along with her son. “She is as strong as an ox, you won’t believe it,” she added. Bonny recalls the countless times that the down-to-earth Eileen would enjoy her leisure time at home with her children, nieces and nephews. “If she decides she’s kicking off her shoes,

she’ll do just that and even walk outside barefoot to say goodbye to us.” Bonny says one of the best qualities she admires in her aunt is her gusto: “She’s a very stylish lady. “She loves her jewellery and doing her hair and her clothing. And she has such an amazing spirit.” Before Eileen retired she was a hairdresser; that was her passion and the job that kept her young and on-trend. Gadija will also celebrate a milestone later this month when they all unite once again to mark her 87th birthday.

The Ferriers are Desmond, Kenny, Charlie, May, Eileen Cora and Bruce, with Bonny Diener, Gadija Heuwel and Theresa Eckles.

erilda Park Primary School children and their parents proved a little love can go a long way when each learner donated R2. Putting their money together, they were able to give a large donation to organisations in the community. The learners and their parents were eager to make a valuable contribution to honour Mandela Day, Thursday 18 July, and to

uplift their community which sees many organisations work hard to help its people. “We, the learners and staff of Zerilda Park Primary, adopted an initiative for Mandela Day to give back by donating non-perishable items and encouraging donations of R2 to sponsor an organisation of their choice in our area and surrounds,” said Lorna Engeldoe, principal of the school. She added that several organisations benefitted from the generosity of the school. “The drive was so well supported that we

managed to donate non-perishable items to Mother’s Unite, Kids Shelter in St Montague Village and hand-knitted jerseys to Philisa Abafazi Bethu,” added Engeldoe. Mothers Unite aims to empower children and combat antisocial behaviour by working with the children of the community. “We are very appreciative of the fact that the learners, teachers and principal thought of our organisation. The donation will keep us going for about two months,” said Carol Jacobs, founder of Mothers Unite.

She continued: “We try to be creative with our cooking and the donation was unexpected. “A lot of the kids who go to Zerilda belong to our centre. Mothers Unite appreciates the very nice and kind gesture.” Mandela Day might just come once a year, but the initiative taken by the school will last the beneficiaries for much, much longer. V For more information on Mothers Unite, call 065 161 4984.

The donation to Mothers Unite will allow them to feed their children for about two months.

Kids to shine in circus The public is urged to see ordinary children do extraordinary things at the second edition of The Greatest Little Circus on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August. The Salt River-based Zip Zap Academy has created a platform for children to shine through the one and a half-hour-long show at 12:00 and 16:00, happening at the academy’s dome. Choreographer Christine Chapman says the show revolves around a movie called The Greatest Showman. “We all loved the movie. It illustrates how circus started and we are all where we are today, because of traditional circus. “It is a fun, light-hearted show

and exudes lots of energy. It’s ideal for the whole family and highly entertaining,” says Chapman. She added that the circus encourages kids to “dare to dream to see what they can achieve”. They work as a team to achieve a common goal. “Passion and perseverance pay off,” Chapman says, as she feels the young performers earned this opportunity. “We always choose about a quarter of our performers to feature in the shows. This all depends on how hard they work, and we try to give them all a chance in the spotlight. At the end of the day, all the kids at Zip Zap have great skills and they all deserve a chance in the spotlight,” she adds.

Zip Zap Academy offers free programmes to participants, to nurture and help young people to realise their talent. It has been around for 27 years. They get split into groups depending on their advancement, with the older and more advanced members moving to a group called the Zappers. According to Chapman, at this stage, the performers get training to focus more on their specialities, rather than doing all the different acts, to get them ready for the professional stage and getting them focused on pursuing a career in the art of circus. V For more information contact Zip Zap on 021 421 8623 or email events@zipzap.co.za.

THEATRE

Ever wanted to kill off a character in a show? A

nyone who has attended the National Arts Festival in the past decade should be familiar with the Butlers comedy series, which promises new and exciting material in Muizenberg. The shows have enjoyed huge popularity since first being performed in 2008, with thousands of people having seen the murdermystery plays where the audience gets to decide what happens next. For the first time yet, Slick ’n Sleeve is bringing their latest “whodunit” comedy production to the Masque Theatre. Butlers and Bombshells is the new instalment of the series. The Butlers team is thrilled to once again present patrons with a brand-new comedy where the audience’s participation has an impact on the storyline. The production shows audiences that an actor’s life can be murder! When a group of aspiring performers audition for a coveted role, dead bodies start piling up – because some people will do any-

thing to get a big break. It’s a murder-mystery with ingenious plot twists. Plus the audience gets to kill off characters during the show. So, if you have ever wanted to kill off one or two characters along the way, now’s your chance. Voting takes place by way of a narrator who gives choices to the viewer. Once a decision is made, the story heads in a particular direction. Anything can happen. Butlers and Bombshells is an exhilarating ride with crazy antics happening right up until the final scene. Murder-mystery theatre has never been this exciting and with multiple endings, who knows what’s going to happen? This thrilling, hair-raising play is to die for! V Tickets cost R100 and bookings can be made through Computicket or the Masque Theatre at bookings@masquetheatre.co.za or 021 788 1898.

Gina Beukes, known for her inimitable musical style and mastery of the violin and viola, will grace a Cape Town stage for the first time in two decades on 10 August. Beukes, currently the solo violist at opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Belgium, will treat Baxter Concert Hall audience members to a unique multi-media programme entitled: Chopin, a Lover, a War and an Astronaut. The one-night-only performance forms part of the Cape Town Concert Series in celebration of Women’s Day. She will be partnered by pianist Esthea Kruger. With works for violin and viola written by or inspired by women, Beukes will take the audience on a journey from the story of Chopin’s lover, George Sands, to the first woman to go into space; with storytelling and video projections to add to the music. Beukes, formerly concertmaster of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and principal second violin of the London Philharmonic and violist in the London Symphony, graduated from the Juilliard with an MMus. Kruger, a prize-winning South African pianist, was awarded her doctorate from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in Germany. She was recently appointed to the teaching staff of the South African College of Music. The concert, which starts at 19:30, is dedicated to the memory of Huberte Rupert, the philanthropist whose generosity enabled many talented South African artists to become renowned performers.

The Rupert Music Foundation has also made it possible for chamber music to be performed on the Cape Town Concert Series’ recital platform. V Tickets range from R160 to R190 and are available from Webtickets http://bit.ly/CTCS12019 or the Baxter Theatre Centre Box Office on the night of the concert. LETTERS

Luthando will be missed It was with much sadness that we learnt of the tragic death of 26-year-old petrol attendant Luthando Rangana, employed at the BP Aero Motors in Kenwyn for five years. Luthando was shot and killed in Khayelitsha on a Friday morning while accompanying a friend. Police are investigating, and no one has been arrested yet in connection with the fatal shooting. He once drove me home, saying how privileged he felt to drive a luxury German SUV.

The Kenwyn Neighbourhood Watch have rallied to collect funds for transporting his body to the Eastern Cape for his funeral. The BP Aero Motors management and staff thanked their loyal customers for their overwhelming support towards Luthando’s family. He is survived by his ailing father and five-year-old son. Please contact me on markrh77@gmail.com should you wish to donate. MARK RH KLEINSCHMIDT, Kenwyn

Preference will be given to letters of fewer than 350 words. The deadline is Thursday at 13:00. Please give your full name, address and phone number (for our records, not for publishing).

Crime prevention starts with you It is a sad story of a Ukrainian tourist killed by predator criminals on our tourist trails in, around and on our mountain and its slopes. We cannot hope that Cape Town is a tourist paradise, not with the crime statistics reported and heaven forbid also the non reported. This tells one and the world that we are a crime capital. This is not only the case here in Cape Town. The whole world is plauged by crime. It is infectious and contagious because there are victims and valuables, and that to the criminal is finance. In plain English it is money gained illegally to make the world go round. It puts the proverbial food on the table. Let me share my thoughts on this subject – keeping in mind my 30

years service as a operational commander in the South African Police in Table Bay Harbour – which included the world famous tourist meccas the V&A Waterfront and Robben Island. Firstly, the police cannot and will not be everywhere. Secondly, we must respect and acknowledge the security officer as a policeman as their presence prevents crime. Thirdly, respect also and acknowledge the car guard whose uniformed presence also prevents crime. They are all policing to prevent crime. But the most important policing partner in the fight against crime is you. Yes, you and I. we must become crime preventers in our homes, on the street and in our vehicles. We must do crime prevention

strategies to protect ourselves and of course our families. I am an ardent fishermen and I have noticed that certain persons advertise tours on fishing trips for tourists. With this in mind, I suggest strongly that persons with security training and with licenced firearms form tourist safety tours on and in our trails, forests and mountains to escort these tourists. A tourist safety tour is the only way, as the law enforcers in all departments have no manpower to protect tourists on these trails. KEITH BLAKE, Ottery

I wonder who the government is trying to fool? Last month the price of petrol came down, but electricity prices went sky high. The price came down just to get the attention away from the high electricity prices. Now, it’s a new month and, guess what, the price of petrol is going up. Mark my word, it’s going to go up every month for the rest of the year. One of these days we will get junk status because of Eskom. The more money Eskom gets, the more it “needs” and we, the consumers, must just pay. It’s a rip-off. Why must we pay for its mistakes every time? Why can’t it take the levy off the prices of petrol? Why can’t the government take away the water levy? South Africa is by far the most expensive “poor” country in the world. JASMINE UYS, Athlone

Help Blisters to fight pollution T

he number of plastic water sachets to be handed out to walkers at this year’s Blisters for Bread will be substantially reduced. Instead, participants are encouraged to bring along their own water bottles which they can fill up at various mobile water trailers along the route. Petrina Pakoe, director of the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), says this is one of their contributions to a more environmentally friendly community. “PSFA is extremely concerned about the increase of plastic pollution and this is our small contribution towards a global movement to becoming a plastic-free society.” PSFA will also be partnering with Sasko and various private schools in the greater Cape Town area, where the learners at these schools will be encouraged to bring bread bags to school and place them in a special Sasko/Blisters for Bread

box for recycling. The participating schools will be rewarded with books which will in turn be donated to schools in PSFA’s feeding programme. Blisters for Bread, in association with Lucky Star, takes place at the Green Point Cricket Club on Sunday 25 August. Walkers can take part in one of two routes along the Sea Point Promenade – a 10km that starts at 07:30 and a 5km that starts at 08:00. Every person who enters will receive a medal. South Africa’s pop sensations Paxton and Jarrad Ricketts will be performing live at the finish line. The entry fee is R60 per person. Each entry helps PSFA feed 24 school children with a nutritious cooked breakfast and lunch for an entire day. Enter online at www.psfa.org.za. V For enquiries, call Nuha at Top Events on 021 511 7130 or email info@topevents.co.za.
