Joining forces to eradicate drugs REYANA STEYN

P

EOPLE Against Gangsterism and Drugs (Pagad) says it iscommitted to continuing its quest to rid communities of drugs through peaceful protest, with the backing of the police and community. Community police forums and the police say they will support the movement “as long as they act within the framework of the law”. “Pagad is active again following the cry from the community,” says Osman Sahib, an executive member of Pagad. “In meetings held over a couple of months it was established that the community is frustrated as every second house in Sherwood Park has a drug addict. Everybody is affected by drugs; youngsters are stealing from their parents and young girls are selling their bodies to support their habit.” Sahib says people are fed-up with drug abuse which has swept through the community. “Even parents who have raised their children with a moral upbringing have seen them turn to drugs. The community feels helpless as they say the police, politicians and even religious leaders are unable to help with the scourge of drugs and save their children.” A 500-strong march was held on Wednesday in Sherwood Park, where Pagad protested against drug dealers. Sahib said this is the first of many such marches in the area. “At Wednesday’s march when the community approached a drug dealer, he admitted that he was selling and said he would stop.” Sahib says Pagad will do whatev-

er it takes to stop the scourge of drugs.” When asked what Pagad’s antidrug action would entail, Sahib responded: “They will be applying enough pressure on the authorities to protect women and children and the marches will be done within the framework of the law.” People’s Post previously reported that Mitchell’s Plain police expressed a zero tolerance approach towards Pagad after its members illegally gathered in Lentegeur to issue a warning to an alleged drug dealer (“Police get tough on Pagad”, 18 August 2009). The Mitchell’s Plain police, together with Metro Police, warned the crowd that the gathering was illegal. Members of the crowed reportedly threatened to kill police officers, whereupon police dispersed the gathering with rubber bullets and a stun grenade, and arrested 58 Pagad members. All 58 appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court and were charged with intimidation of police members and contravening the Illegal Gatherings Act. They were released on R300 bail each and the case was postponed until 1 October 2009. People’s Post tried to establish the outcome of the court appearance in 2009, but police were unable to assist. However, Sahib says the cases were thrown out of court due to lack of evidence. “We will always follow the proper procedures when it comes to having marches and rely on the support of the authorities, but we as the community cannot sit still and pretend nothing’s happening,” he said. He added: “Pagad had results that no other movement has had. When

Photo: Jan Gerber we came out 14 years ago, most drug dealers stopped selling. This isn’t something we are doing for ourselves; we have children and families and we need to end drug abuse and gangsterism. It has been proven that drug dealing can be stopped when pressure is applied.” People’s Post tried to gain comment from Major General Jeremy Vearey, Mitchell’s Plain cluster head about Pagad’s plan, but was unable to do so by the time of going to print. When the paper asked Sahib about Pagad’s silence over the past year, he responded that they “have never been quiet, but have always held meetings, but the media only became aware of them when marches were held”. “When people reach out to us, we are there to see how we can help. The movement is reacting on people’s vulnerability.” Manenberg police station’s Cap-

tain Wynand Muller said the police will support the marches as Pagad has the same goal in mind. Referring to last week’s Sherwood Park march, Muller said: “Pagad has a concern over drug dealing and the community came out to support them. A strong police contingent watched over the march. There were top police members, members from the police and dog unit and a chopper on standby.” Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson, says they will too support the organisation, but it must be within the framework of the police. “We will support any organisation which wants to rid areas of drugs and crime, but they must act within the South African law and the Constitution and respect all people’s rights. “No vigilante groups will be supported or those who think they are above the law. If organisations do,

action will be taken against them.” Hanif Loonat, chairperson of the Nyanga Cluster Community Police Forum said: “I believe there is a place for Pagad in these challenging times. “My plea to Pagad is let us as lawabiding citizens raise our concerns within the ambit of the law, as was demonstrated in the march. “Let Pagad assure and build the trust between the authorities and the organisation. Helpless communities are looking to Pagad for assistance in the eradication of drugs.” . Pagad will be holding a series of meetings with the objective of establishing branches in various areas. A meeting was held last night in Lavender Hill to discuss how Pagad can assist following the gang violence which has been ongoing for a year and has claimed the lives of six people over the weekend.

lone Stadium. “The place looks terrible,” says Suzette Little, councillor for Ward 49. “People are dumping on the site. The bush is overgrown and, because it has never been cleaned, artificial hills have formed. “What’s really alarming is people are seen going into the walkway and disappearing behind the artificial hills. Nobody knows what is happening there; that is a mystery. There have also been numerous reports of people being robbed.” Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson, could not confirm reports of robberies on the walkway, but encouraged people who had been robbed there, to report these. He added: “We have received reports of gang activity and people smoking drugs on the canal which runs next to the walkwayl and police are investigating.” Little says plans are being discussed with the Solid Waste Department. “We have been in meetings with officials of the Solid Waste Department and they have gone back to their management and will let us know when the clean-up will begin, which will be soon.” She also urges people to stop dumping, as they are “destroying their own communi-

The minimum fine for littering is R500, with a maximum of R10 000. Fines of more than R2 500 can only be imposed by the courts. If it is a first offence, the fine for dumping is R1 000,

while R20 000 applies for a second offence. In more serious cases, offenders may receive a prison sentence. A fine can also be imposed for dumping of builders’ rubble. Additional penalties vary depending on the volume of material dumped. Report dumping to the Corporate Call Centre on 0860 103 089. If the public has information on the identity or vehicle registration numbers of those who have dumped rubbish, they should contact the Solid Waste Bylaw Enforcement Unit on (021) 400-6157.

Manenberg resident claims beating by the police’s Crime Intervention Unit

Man claims police ‘torture’ TAMMY PETERSEN

SUFFOCATED, beaten and tortured in his own home – all at the hands of the police. This is the claim of Ismail Moses (26), a taxi owner from Tagus Road, Manenberg, who claims officers from the police’s crime intervention unit spent two hours trying to get him to admit to housing a cache of illegal guns inside his wendy house. Ismail’s aunt, Warda Moses, says she and her 10-year-old son were in bed at about 19:45 when she heard a bang at the door as about 12 uniformed officers barged into her home on Tuesday 21 February. “They came storming in here, scaring my ouma – who was watching TV in the lounge – half to death. One of the policemen came into my room and pointed a gun at my son and I while the other kicked the door of the other room while telling my ouma to shut up.” She continues that the officers rushed out the back door to the wendy house while “holding (them) hostage” in her bedroom. Ismail says the officers grabbed him and

questioned him. “The only thing they asked me was ‘Waar is die guns?’ and before I even had the opportunity to answer, one of them pistol-whipped me. They repeated the question and I hadn’t even opened my mouth yet when they hit me again,” he says. Ismail, who admits he spent three years in Pollsmoor for theft after he and a group of friends stole a man’s cellphone in Sea Point when he was 21, says the officers grabbed a plastic bag and put it over his head. “While they tried to suffocate me, another officer tied my hands with cable ties,” he says, showing marks on his wrists. “They threw water on me, wrapped me in a blanket and started beating and kicking me. Every time I would pass out they would remove the bag and throw water at me until I came around before putting the bag over my face again. They tortured me.” Inside the house, his grandmother, Gadija, was in a state as she witnessed the beating

from where she was seated in the lounge. “They hit and hit and hit him. How could they do that?” the 76-year-old says. “I told them to stop but all they said to me was ‘Hou jou mond’.” Warda says her son was inconsolable as the officer continued to point the gun at Ismail and his mother. They refused to let either leave the room. “When I tried to phone someone to fetch him, an officer grabbed the phone and threw it in the passage. I didn’t know what to do. He’s only 10!” Eventually an officer took the child outside and a neighbour collected him. While some of the officers allegedly beat Ismail, others started wrecking his wendy house, smashing in the floor with a crowbar and ripping his ceiling boards and dividers apart. “I could do nothing. They beat me and beat me for about two hours and when they found nothing, they untied my hands and left me lying there. They walked out without an explanation and not once did anyone even show a

search warrant.” Warda says the squad then simply walked out, telling her that they had received a tip-off that Ismail was in possession of illegal guns. “One of them, the only female officer, then had the cheek to ask me if I was alright. How could they ask me that? Is what they did alright? I didn’t even bother to answer her.” Ismail was taken to Gatesville Medical Centre, where he was treated for severe bruising, two blue eyes, a chest injury and a minor head injury. He paid R500 from his own pocket for the hour-long consultation. “We laid a charge of assault with the Manenberg police, and they were very co-operative. What happened was disgusting – how dare they come in here and do what they like?” Manenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer Llewellyn Lakay says the matter is under investigation and was unable to comment further.

“It’s an exciting event to look forward to and the boys are pumped to partake in this event in their own back yard,” says Shaheem Galant, principal of Islamia College in Lansdowne. On Thursday 18 March, the first annual Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) national soccer tournament will be hosted in Cape Town. The tournament was hosted in Johannesburg last year, and involved several Muslim schools in a three-day event. On the long list of schools are Al Falaah and Orient Muslim schools from Durban, Nasroedien Muslim School from Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg Muslim School and the Escort Muslim School from Kwazulu-Natal. Representing Cape Town is Darul Islam and Al Azhar Muslim schools. Galant said the tournament, now in its 12 year, is hosted by a school in different parts of the country, often forcing their boysto travel in order to participate. “We are truly looking forward to this experience of hosting such a big event,” Galant added. Twenty-seven schools will be participating in seven-a-side clashes. Each team will be involved in 12-minute matches. Nazmie Phillips, a former soccer trainer, is excited at the prospect of hosting the AMS

championship and said: “Our boys have the chance to represent their city on their own home ground, so I just know they will do us proud.” “Events such as these do not come every day, especially an event of this magnitude, because it’s talent coming from all over the country,” says Phillips. The tournament will be hosted at the Windsor High School grounds, and adequate facilities are available for all matches. The weekend will kick off with a Quranic recital and lectures from guest speakers at a banquet hosted by the convening school on Thursday 17 March. “The main priority is to ensure that we promote sportsmanship and create a fun atmosphere for the boys to enjoy themselves,” Galant said. On Sunday 20 March, the tournament will be ended with an awards presentation in the Islamia College Hall. “Just a quick message to the boys: enjoy yourselves and do everybody cheering you on very proud,” Phillips said. Grant urged Cape Town “to come out in their droves” to support the players. Refreshments will be on sale, with all funds being pumped back into the school. For any further information on the AMS championship, kindly contact the school on (021) 696-5600/5836.

Over 250 applications for bursary A RECORD number of 254 applications were received for this year’s Imam Abdullah Haron Education Trust (IAHET) bursaries at the closing date of 25 February. The bursaries, which are open to all tertiary level students irrespective of race, gender or creed, are worth R5 000 each. Junaid Daries, head of the IAHET’s education sub-committee, said the quality and variety of applications will make the task of shortlisting candidates and awarding the bursaries very difficult. “The number of applications received, which is up significantly from last year’s figure of 176, is both a reflection of the growing profile of the IAHET, which is now in its fifth year of operation, as well as a sign of the tough

economic times. “We are happy that so many of our youth are pursuing tertiary studies and even though the bursary doesn’t cover all their fees, it does make a significant contribution to meeting their financial commitments.” Daries pointed out that shortlisted candidates will be called to interviews between 26 March and 25 April and that successful applicants should be notified by the first week of May. “Those applicants who have not been contacted by 26 March should accept that their applications were unsuccessful. Because all our members hold full-time jobs we simply don’t have the time or capacity to notify each applicant,” he said.

BUSTED: Four men appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday for possession of illegal firearms and a stolen vehicle. “Police officers were busy with crime prevention patrols in Col lege Road, Gatesville, when they spotted four suspiciouslook ing men in a white Ford Bantam LDV on Thursday at 19:00,” says Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone police spokesperson. “When the members checked the number plate of the vehicle it did not correspond with the details of the Ford Bantam LDV. They approached the two men sitting in the front of the vehicle and two others sitting at the back. Police searched the four men and found three illegal firearms on them.” Bennett says that on further investigation it was established that the vehicle was reported stolen in Brackenfell in January this year. The serial numbers of all three firearms were filed off. The four suspects, who were aged between 30 and 39 and were from Gugulethu, were arrested. The case was postponed until Thursday 24 March. All suspects are being detained at Pollsmoor Prison.

Mothers to be can look forward to welcoming their babies at the new Rondebosch maternity home

Maternity home ready to deliver C

APE TOWN’s first private, non-profit maternity home was officially launched on Sunday 27 February in Rondebosch East. Al-Nisa Maternity Home is a midwife-led, women-only facility which offers holistic antenatal, birth and postnatal care to women with low-risk pregnancies. “We want to provide a supportive environment that establishes the dignity and reverence of the birthing process,” says Dr Unwarr Adam, the founder of the home. “Our care will be provided by skilled midwives using best-practice natural birthing methods beneficial to both the mother and baby.” The concept of a maternity home first took root over 30 years ago, when Dr Adam ran the obstetric unit in a Transkei hospital. He noticed a “huge disparity” in the level of service offered by government hospitals compared to the midwife-driven obstetrics unit run by nuns in other hospitals. “The nuns cared for their patients, protected their modesty and provided a valuable service,” said Dr Adam. Adam’s own children were born in maternity homes such as these and from this, his dream to establish a similar facility was born. The Adam family purchased the Rokeby Road property in 1992, and after licensing and rezoning was approved, construction eventually began in 2006. Today, Al-Nisa (which means “The Women”

in Arabic) has eight beds for antenatal and postnatal care, two delivery rooms, two assessment rooms and a nursery. The home, designed by Dr Adam’s architect daughter, Adila Adam, also includes a functioning kitchen for use by patients and a landscaped courtyard, which adds to the tranquillity and homeliness of the environment. The hospital also offers the services of a general From left: Nursing sisters Said Thomas, Ruwayda Madam and Farida practition- Ahmed at the launch of AlNisa Maternity Home. The 1UP Cash and Carry Big Walk, presented by Spice Mecca, was held in aid of the Red Cross Children’s Hospital and Islamic Library. A cheque of R125 000 was handed to Red Cross Children’s Hospital on the day. Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato fired the

starting gun just before 08:00. Dr Ivan Meyer, MEC for Cultural Affairs and Sport, was spotted among the Big Walk participants walking along the beachfront to the Green Point track. Seen here are just some of the thousands of people who enjoyed the glorious weather and healthy outdoors on Sunday. . People’s Post is the print media sponsor of the Big Walk.

Strike terror BELEAGUERED commuters are once again getting the short end of the public transport stick as a citywide taxi strike got under way yesterday (Monday). Members of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco) protested about “draconian” traffic laws and the red tape and “sloppiness” around the issuing of operating licences by provincial government. Santaco secretary general Philip Taaibosch says the Western Cape “is the only province in South Africa where taxi operators are harassed in such a big way”. Taxi drivers are entitled to protest about matters affecting their livelihoods, but peacefully so. That the strike turned violent on its first day displays a blatant disregard for the government’s warning that Santaco will be held personally responsible for any violence. Even the National Taxi Alliance’s urging taxi drivers “not do anything and to park the taxis at ranks or at home” fell on deaf ears. Many taxi drivers are notoriously reckless. Their conduct during strikes bears testimony to their overall lack of regard for themselves, their passengers and fellow road users. They threaten the very commuters who faithfully support them and rely on them as their only mode of transport from the townships to work. Among the alarming incidents reported since the strike began: a bread truck was set alight; vehicles were set alight and stoned by striking drivers; stone-throwing occurred in Fish Hoek and along Klipfontein Road; Golden Arrow buses were stoned on Lansdowne Road. As with previous taxi strikes, this strike was characterised on its first day by violence, intimidation, destruction and opportunistic crime – none of which will garner sympathy or even empathy.

We deserve a better future LISTEN to news and read reports today Ruinous racism is coming back to stay Democracy is suffering and dying true Diseased discrimination for me and you! Apartheid created the Group Areas Act SA politics is bringing discrimination back! All hail the power of Africans name, let all colourful angels fall. Bring forth the royal Deity’s Den And crown them supreme racists of all! Oh! Democracy, you everlasting promised prince of peace Extreme black supremacists are having a political feast. The beheaded “race demographic” is alive to say the least. It has come to castrate colourful people while sowing hateful discord To deprive of their rightful existence and to displace as reward. To be trodden like mindless bugs into dirty dry earth Has now become a reality and no longer mirth! Where art thou democracy our Saviour we fought for? This colourful people a race SA. Bore! Must death and destruction

again bang down our door? After fighting for dignity and freedom our wounds and scars are still raw! A black and white picture is less boring to behold When adding some colour the picture becomes brighter and bold! Mixed talents, skills and culture are the variety of life Between different people living and loving together without greed, disrespect or strife. It is the right of every born national to enjoy safety and peace To live and survive without dreading the disease Of a poisoned democratic “colourless creed” Firstly the white and now the black breed. To suit their agendas just because they can, politicians Change at a whim every law, act or plan. Though lacking insight, sustainability or ground They continuously misuse and pound every good deed down. Be it for votes or territorial reign Leaders are shielded from bullets that rain. From guns used on people to kill and maim, Or to silence and decapitate the thinking brain. To uproot a vibrant force of luminescent hu-

mans living on peaceful lane. Displacing people disturbs lives and causes chaos. Tt is vile, turns violent and is undemocratic. Cowards who instigate disharmony are protected at all cost. Their security forces are big and never at a loss For a hand grenade or pistol is at the tax payers cost. The guard eager to shoot has no conscience rule And engraved on their tomb can be either “Hero or Fool”. Too many innocent people lose their lives, their children husbands and wives. When leaders advocate discriminatory laws creating fear which results in mass uncertainty, leads to ethnic hatred and ultimately civil war and mass destruction of human lives! The payroll slaves who kill for a “cause”, Receiving a pittance they kill without remorse. For monetary gain they endure self inflicted strain, Beating, bullying and bruising fellow humans travelling on the same inhumane train! Oh! Democracy you have sanctioned and enslaved selfish man, greedily pursuing a well structured scam. Gathering much treasure for their personal use. As the wealth of the country is being mismanaged and abused. God save non-black African nationals, called by undignified names bereft of country and grace. So easily to be deleted from the human race, Never to be traced to a place on the world map’s face! “A homeless people, probably born

in space, their nationality erased, or hopefully to be replaced.” Many times rejected, these humans still stand tall Except the sell-outs who are used up then take the fall. Denying your roots is changing your speech, face, culture and hair And finding yourself in a place not even you know who you are or where! All humans are just people special in their own space when treated as equals and not defined by race! A race is endurance of a team member having fun to run in hot sun Amidst shouting cheers from peers like thunder from the stand As the sounds are taking the runner’s hand Reaching together to the winning posts amidst screams and echoes at most. As joy beams the whole team boasts: A Win For One is a win For All! And that is the success of any strong nation! Stop undermining people’s mentality and their reason to want to live and succeed by becoming a unified, dignified, prosperous and technicoloured nation who can uphold respect for each other! This will guarantee sustainability to our future generations! Leaders should rather look for ways to help, enhance and bring peace and stability to our once-torn nation and to work towards a safer and better country for all people. Instead of clamouring for votes prove your worth as leaders and you will get what you deserve! Bring people together instead of driving them apart! PIERRENE MALANDER Silvertown, Athlone

Your SMSes . To the grandmother driving a white car, you are irresponsible to leave two boys, approximate age 7, and a girl aged 4, alone in the car while parked in Kenilworth parking bays on Monday 7 March, while you did your business inside. You were parking at the Fujifilm entrance at the time. They don’t deserve a hiding. You grandma, deserve a scolding and a hiding. Had I had the time, I would have waited for you, I would. Any child that is in your care, you must take responsibility and ownership for, and look after them properly. Don’t endanger our children any further than what they already have to live with. Don’t you add to the statistics of crime and violence where the kids are concerned. It obviously doesn’t bother you that somebody could have stolen or

hurt them, otherwise you wouldn’t have left them alone. If only you know how angry I get when people like you leave kids that age unattended. .There is a definite lack of ginger in Stoney ginger beer these days. Has anyone else also tasted the difference? L.S. . If we are proudly South African, then why don’t we fly our flag in front of our homes like they do in other countries such as America? If we can do this then we can really make ourselves proud, don’t you agree? Amos . Vandalism at state facilities is a great concern. I think it would help if security cameras are installed inside and outside the buildings and a security monitor deployed where there is not anyone on duty, and they can monitor and communicate with their colleagues. I am sure this will stop vandalism in its tracks. Concerned health worker

Get your home-grown movies TWO short films written by members of the Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC) are for sale. The films were supervised by Theo E Davids, the artistic director of BTC, the Sediba and National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF)-trained feature film screenwriter, and a freelance television drama series writer for the SABC. Twelve students were selected out of 600 to research, develop and write 12 short film screenplays from March to September 2010. At the end of the writing process in November 2010, the best two of the 12 screenplays were made into 26-minute films. “Determined” and “Life’s a joke” were selected for their creativity, originality and marketability. “Determined” was written by Grade 10 student Yolokazi Jezile and is about an orphaned teenage boy and his sister forced to move from the Eastern Cape to attend high school in Cape Town for a better education. “They discover that life is even more diffi-

The film stars Yandiswa Jindela, Viwe Benxa, Sibusiso Zwele, Wendy Mxutu, Zikhona Qalinge and Annemarie de Maar. “Life’s a joke”, by Grade 8 student Nicolene Abrahams, is about a talented, introverted young woman getting a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform as a stand-up comedian at a famous comedy club, only to discover that her tyrannical mother wants her to take full time care of her sick brother. The film stars Gouwa Harris, Dylan Brandt, Cheryl Bolters and Glynis Jacobs. Both films were directed by Davids. The two films are on DVD and cost R50 each. All the funds raised from the DVD sales will go to Bridgetown High School and will be used for school projects. Both films are currently being reviewed by the SABC for screening later this year. They are also scheduled to be screened at the Durban Film Festival in June 2011. To place your orders call Enid Kirchhoff on (021) 637-1436.

The rapid development of players like Thulani Serero, Khama Billiat, Sameehg Doutie, Sonwabile Lolo and Granwald Scott has marked Ajax’s progress thus far. Soweto-born Serero (21) and Billiat (21) from Zimbabwe (21) have each scored vital goals, while the pacy Doutie (22) is enjoying his best season since joining Ajax at age 17. Their efficiency is matched by Kensington-born midfielder Scott and defender Lolo, whom Ajax nabbed from African Tribes amateurs in Khayelitsha. The efforts of Tembinkosi “Terror” Fanteni and Serero to hit the target 11 and eight times respectively this season also augurs well for the match. The not-so-good news for De Haan is that the suspended Doutie will miss the crucial showdown. star-studded Ajax-Amsterdam FC side that won the European Cup for three consecutive years (1971-1973) – missing out on the 1971 final due to a fractured leg. Notably in his heyday the versatile Krol could be depended on to play in all defensive and midfield positions for club and country. So no wonder Pirates boasts one of the best defensive records in the league this season – thanks mainly to Krol’s coaxing of defensive midfielder Andile Jali (21) and leftback Reuben Cloete into tough ball winners. Pirates have scored 34 times and conceded 16 goals while Ajax, on the other hand, have hit the target 36 times but have conceded 24 goals. This of course is a worry for De Haan and goalkeeper Hans Vonk – his custodian at Heerenveen FC for several years before he moves Ajax Amsterdam FC and their Cape Town namesakes. But De Haan showed his hand when the

long-serving flank defenders Brett Evans and Nazeer Allie – who were sidelined with leg injuries for several weeks – returned to the team that lost 2-1 to Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup knockout championship over the weekend. The possible inclusion of both flank defenders with the centre back duo of Derek Descamp and Clayton Daniels could be De Haan’s ploy to snuff out Pirates’ free-scoring Katlego Mashego, Thulasizwe Mbuyane and Tiou Segolele. Pirates, since the inception of the PSL in 1995, have been crowned champions in 2001/02 and 2002/03, while placing second in 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2008/09. .
